“WE NEED A FEW GOOD PORSCHE PEOPLE” to run for the 2023 California Central Coast Region Board of Directors. The salary and benefits are nothing (technically nothing) compared to the contributions you can make for the 700-plus members of our PCA Region. So this “Prez’s Corner is dedicated to notifying our membership that the nominating committee of the California Central Coast Region Board is solicit ing Primary members to stand for election to the 2023 Board of Directors. We have over 400 Primary members (out of a total membership of 710 plus or minus) and we are looking for twelve members for our 2023 Board. Perhaps eight or nine of our 2022 Board members will stand for re-election to the 2023 Board. Directors are elected by region-wide voting so that nearly every Board position is eligible for a new Director. The positions include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Activities, Member ship, Safety, Driving Events (Autocross and Drivers Education), Coastalaire Editor, Webmaster/Database Administrator and Director-at-Large. We always appreciate feedback from our members on how our Region and activities could improve. We believe that continuous improvement is yet another opportunity for you to step in and provide that leader ship. You need only to declare your candidacy to any of the present Board members and indicate position(s) of interest and be prepared to submit a brief and infor mal biography. In particular we will be in need of a new president for 2023. Members may also indicate a potential candidate’s name to any of the nominating committee listed at the end of this piece. We continue to grow membership in our Region and have the req uisite financial resources to do more and better ac tivities. Again, we look to our members for initiative and leadership to promote CCCR activities for 2023 onward. We thank you for your continuing support.

by Bob Kitamura, Editor saw some of those same cars again this year. Thinking about next year, I can imagine what it will be like with the PCA Porsche Parade in Palm Springs, Monterey Car Week, and Rennsport all with in a few months of each other. It certainly will affect the ole’ pocketbook! One thing I do enjoy doing at the PCA Werks Reunion is judging cars for the Judged Cars Event. It is a different approach and much more relational, it is more about the owner than the car. This year I was able to help judge again in the early Porsche division. As crazy as it will be, I am looking forward to next year. I heard that many of you were there, having run into some of you at Werks Reunion and Laguna Seca. We are still in need of volunteers for the upcoming West Coast Holiday on September 14-18. Please email Joe Kuntze at k708388@aol.com if you would like to help with this great Central Coast Porsche 356 event. There is only one more autocross and Drivers Edu cation event left for this year, I hope you are going to partcipate in these great activities. Especially since you own a Porsche!.

Don’t forget to Get Out and Drive!, Bob “Kit” Chuck Jennings is shown in the latest issue of Panorama instructing the class for new drivers for our autocrosses. If you’ve ever wondered who gets to our Drive n’ Dine events first! Here is a photo of that person! Its our very own president, Winterbottom!AndrewEither he’s that dedicated to see all of you or that hungry! Well, August was a very busy month for car fanatics in California. Monterey Car Week was pretty busy in 2021 but this year was back to its normal crazy self. After spending 7-10 days there every year for a few decades I finally noticed that I was taking pictures of the same cars each year! So about five years ago I finally de cided to cut back spending a lot of time there. Funny, I

Laguna Lake to Ragged Point

It’s still not easy to have a large group of people take over a restau rant…they are still continue to have staffing problems. So we decided to try something different this time around. We had the food come to us. A few months back, Guy and Alice Ober brought lunch for a group of Autocross fans, it was catered by Kathleen Dagnall, of Aloha Catering. Almost more food than one could eat. It consisted of a large sandwich, a small salad, an apple, cookie, a piece of candy and a small note! Some notes were from Dr. Porsche … a nice tribute! This time was no different. Everybody enjoyed their delicious meal with some not able to completely finish it. This was one of the first times that we were doing the “Drive and Dine” differently, so it became a “Dine and Drive”. We had 21 people with 11 cars show up for lunch and an 80 minute drive up the coast to Ragged Point. We were joined by a few new members to our club but not new to PCA… welcome to CCCRPCA! We had plenty of room on the picnic tables. After finishing lunch, we drove up LOVR to Turri Rd to South Bay Blvd. and onto Hwy 1. We had to kill a bit of time so of course we turned right onto Old Creek Road. The day was extremely pleasant with sun shining and virtually no wind to speak of…another beautiful California coastal day! The normal Saturday traffic was light after leaving the Morro Bay area, and a bit heavier around Cam bria. Going to Ragged Point on a Sat urday is always different and this was no exception. The restaurant usually has a band playing on Saturdays and Sundays. It was an enjoyable drive, lunch was fabulous and some people even stayed and enjoyed the music. If you haven’t taken the time to come join us on our “Drive and Dine” events…you should! Lots of new members with some transferees from other clubs, enjoying one of the best automotive wonders of the world, our Porsches and the PCA families.Ournext Drive and Dine will take place on September 10th with a drive from SLO to San Simeon Beach Bar and Grill (SSBB&G). We will join up at 8:30 at SLO Chevrolet & Mercedes Benz of San Luis Obispo at 8:30 for coffee, pastries and a few announcements and then drive off for a another delicious meal in San Simeon. Signups will open up soon on YourSeeMSR!youthen,Activities Committee

Monday, August 15 Porsche Monterey started things off with a Classic Partner event. Also, Automobilia Monterey opened at the Embassy Suites Hotel.

Tuesday, August 16 Classic Motosports Magazine held their Kickoff Cruise-in, and the Automobilia continued.

Week / Werks Reunion 2022

Many activities happened, al though the Concours on the Avenue, and the Carmel Mission Classic were cancelled this year. They are both ex pected to return next year, so plan to attend early if you want to see them. The Little Car Show was held in Pacific Grove, and in the afternoon, the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic concluded at the Lodge in Pebble Beach. Finally, Automobilia went on as scheduled, I left my home late that morning and specifically drove up to check out. Last year I did this, and took the direct route to Pacific Grove, and got stuck in of traffic congestion due to the Little Car Show. This year when I left the Embassy Suites, I got on Highway 1 south to Highway 68 to Pacific Grove and I Automobilia

1932 Auburn Tour d’Elegance

Wednesday, August 17

Another Monterey Car Week has come and gone. I don’t know if I will ever get around to spending an entire week there, because driving up on Wednesday, and driving home the following Monday is rather awe inspiring for me. And besides, “Week” is kind of a misnomer as the Mon terey Historics Pre-Reunion began August 12.

Photos by Alfred Abken, Jon Milledge & Bob Kitamura bypassed almost all of the congestion. I was better prepared for The Little Car Show this year, and I had a much better time there. After the show, I checked into my hotel which was just northwest of where the car show was on Lighthouse Ave. After getting unpacked, I headed down to Carmel Valley to have an early dinner at the Baja Cantina. It is remarkable the cars you see on the road in just a short 10.5 mile drive. After another fabulous “Tropical Mango Enchilada” dinner, I at tempted to find something I had seen on a map in Pacific Grove. There is a John Denver Memorial shown off the coast above Ocean View Blvd near Asilomar Ave. I realized later I was looking near Lighthouse Ave. and Ocean View Blvd. I had a nice walk along the Asilomar Coastal Trail. Unfortunately, I did not walk anywhere near far enough to find the John Denver Memorial. I am looking forward to finding it next year.

The Great Tide Pool

Thursday, August 18 Legends of the Autobahn was held, and the Rolex Monterey Motor sports Reunion got underway. There was also an auction at the Jet Center; Pebble Beach had RetroAuto, and also offered Classic Car Forums. I was up and out early to head down Highway 1 to Monastery Beach to watch the Tour d’Elegance. This event is open to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance entries. Cars that complete the tour get preferential consideration in the event of a tie in their classes’ judging. About 2/3 of the cars entered Little Car Show

WERKS REUNION 2022

Bill

It was another extremely busy day, so many choices. The Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally and the Ro lex Monterey Motorsports Reunion continued at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca; and there was The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. I was up and out early to make a stop at the Paris Bakery Café for pastries and an espresso to take with me to Werks Reunion. As I was driving through Mon terey, I heard this ping, ping, ping… noise, that I was sure was not on the stereo. After I parked my car, I real ized the left front wheel center cap had fallen off. Lucky for me I was able to order one from Sierra Madre Collection, one of the vendors. After missing the show last year, I was extremely happy to get there this year. The biggest surprise to me, after I had parked my car, next & Erin Gibson

participate in this, and the only cost involved is gas. It is the best bargain of theLateweek.inthe morning, I headed over to the Monterey Pines Golf Club to help set up for Friday’s Werks Reunion. This was at a new venue this year, and it was an interesting location. It is extremely close to the Monterey Regional Airport, so there were all sorts of planes taking off all afternoon. Once again, I had dinner at Turn 12 in Monterey. Last year my car would not start after having din ner there, so I was a wee bit skeptical about stopping there, but I am glad I got over it. Their honey truffle chicken is well worth it.

Brian Pritt At the Porsche Corral

The Coastalaire September 2022 23 continued to a real 924 Carrera GT, I discovered it belonged to Brian Pritt, who is the new owner of The Stable (formerly SGS) in San Luis Obispo. It’s a small world. I also ran into Bill & Erin Gibson, and Gil Igleheart and Carol Walker.Itturned out to be quite the re markable day. Cars from the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge were on display. Some truly remarkable cars were being shown. There was a concours for folks that wanted to vie for trophies, and a huge corral area. Actually, they were on two fairways of the golf course. Needless to say, there were LOTS of Porsches there! Upon leaving the golf course, I went to see what was going on at the Porsche Zentrum. This was set up at the Barns of Cooper Molera on Polk St. I was a little confused by their hours. For the 19th they were open from 10 AM to 12 PM. Did this mean noon or midnight? Well, I found out it was noon, and they were getting ready to open for a private party. At least the security guard was kind enough to al low me to take one photo of a covered 908. Later they unveiled the new 992 GT3 RS there. As I was close to Rosine’s, I walked there and had their wonderful Salmon Florentine dinner. Techni cally it was off their lunch menu as I got there a bit before 5 PM, and they do not serve dinner until 5 PM. It was fabulous just the same.

Saturday, August 20

Monterey Car Week / Werks Reunion 2022

There was Exotics on Broadway. This used to be on Cannery Row. Also, the Concours d’LeMons was held, along with Concorso Italiano. I again started my morning by going to the Paris Bakery Café for pastries and coffee, then made my way to Weath erTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the historic races. It was another damp and very foggy morning. In fact, the first run group was delayed in starting due to the poor visibility. After parking my car, I wandered around the paddock some. The featured marque this year was cars that had participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They had a fabulous dis play of cars that had participated, and some even won the race. In a differ ent part of the paddock, there was a 1951 Hudson Hornet set up to resemble “Doc Hudson” from the Cars movie. Apparently, someone came up with the idea of running a hill climb, by going up to the top of the corkscrew from turn 9. This event took place Sunday morning, so I, un fortunately, did not see it, however, I did see a bit of it Monday morning on a local TV station. In case you have not seen it, perhaps this link will watch?v=a9v5A3o3w6Qhttps://www.youtube.com/work:ThefolksatBringaTrailer had a remarkable display of cars inside Turn 3, and when I was by their late Saturday morning, there were still cars arriving. The Coastalaire September 2022 25 continued was offering free rides in horseless carriages. I took them up on their offer, and got to ride around the park ing and vendor area between turns 4 and 2. My ride was a 1914 REO. A very advanced car. It had an electric starter.Once again, PCA offered lunch inside of Turn 5. This is always fun. I ran into Bob Kitamura and several other people I know. It is also a nice shady place to watch the cars braking into Turn 5.

There was the Pebble Beach Retro Auto, and, of course, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. I was up and out early again to see some of the cars drive onto the field at Pebble Beach. Another stunning show of drop-dead gorgeous cars. They were also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, as well as the centennial of Lincoln. They also celebrated Talbot-Lago and Hermann Graber, 1932 Ford hot rods, and vehicles propelled by unorthodox means.Asper usual, there were automobiles there you just don’t see any where else. Following the show, I had dinner at the Fishwife on Sunset in Pacific Grove. The perfect ending to an utterly fabulous weekend. This year I never saw any mention on the Blackhawk Museum’s website about an open house, so I got home fairly early Monday. I have not mentioned any of the auctions at this time. The Coastalaire September 2022 34 Are They Really Better?

- Rav4 (ICE): $1,333 (fuel) + $400 (maintenance) = $1,733. - Rav4 (EV): $372 (electricity) + $0.00 (maintenance) = $372. The difference is $1361. In order to break even you would have to keep the car almost 13 years ($17,300/year / $1,733 = 12.71 years). This doesn’t take into account that insurance costs for the EV are higher than the ICE version simply because of the replacement value of the car. The counter is: But they are way better for the environment! Are they? … Really? The 1,000 pound batteries that power EVs have a life of 10 years. What happens after those 10 years? They must be replaced – and they’re won’t be recycled!Theonly reason batteries are re cycled today is because of the cobalt content. But as batteries convert to non-cobalt content, such as lithium, recycling becomes more expensive than mining, and dump sites will be a more economical way to dispose of them. Imagine when millions and millions of batteries run their life and are not recycled, where do they go? Can you say toxic waste dump? … Better for the environment? You hear it all the time, “EVs (Electric Vehicles) are significantly better for the environment because they produce zero emissions com pared to conventional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles and make a lasting positive impact on our planet”.Butare they REALLY better? As an engineer, I need to analyze the pros and cons to make the determi nation. Join me on this search and Sinceanalysis.it’s been globally decided that all cars are bad, this is the new thinking and our future. The best car related innovation we have is not to improve the car, but eliminate the need to drive it everywhere we go. That’s the mantra. Cars are our mod ern-day dinosaurs; soon to be extinct. If you have a nice ICE machine, hold on to it!

by Pedro Bonilla, GCR PCA conservative rule of thumb is that an EV gets 3.5 miles per kWh. The US average cost of a kWh is $0.13. So, driving 10,000 miles per year you will need 2,857 kWh which at $0.13 each will come out to $372/year. Driving a 30 mpg ICE vehicle 10,000 miles per year at $4.00/gallon will cost $1,333 in fuel/year. The EV owner gets a savings here of $961/ year. Also, the EV owner will save an average of $400/year in maintenance versus the ICE vehicle since EVs do not need oil changes and have far fewer parts than ICE vehicles. But look closely at the actual cost of the vehicles (ICE vs EV). The ICE version of the 2021 Toyota Rav4 with the options comparable to the Rav4EV is $27,800. The 2021 Rav4EV starts at $49,800 to which you need to add $1,300 for the LII home charging sta tion and installation cost of $1,500. So the Rav4EV actually comes to $52,600.Thedifference is $24,800 in favor of the ICE vehicle (and that differ ence exists with all brands offering both versions of a particular model). There are tax incentives that you get if you pay cash for the vehicle. Let’s say you do and deduct it from the cost: $52,600 - $7,500 = $45,100. Still a difference of $17,300 in favor of ICE.Looking at the annual cost of ownership (fuel/electricity and maintenance):

Let’s analyze it: EV PRO - You can save a lot of money. False claim in my opinion and here’s why. An electric vehicle uses electricity to charge its batteries and power it’s electric motor(s). A

I think these are offset by the CONs such as long battery charging time, relatively short autonomy, difficulty in finding charging stations, higher costs, etc.

purchasing an EV (and I have driven quite a few, including the Taycan Turbo S which is an outstanding piece of machinery). I am conscious of our environment and really believe that EVs are the bad choice here. At least I’ll be able to drive my old 1998 Boxster even when fossil fuels become outlawed or impos sible to buy because of their cost. If you read one of my previous articles, Porsche will be producing their EGas (synthetic fuel) that affords old ICE vehicles extremely low levels of pollution, comparable to the net produced by EVs. We can all do our part to help the environment for future generations, so think this one through before you decide to go all in. For more information on EVs, ICE and more, please visit my web site: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, 2022PedroTechnolab / PedrosGarage.com www.pedrosgarage.com

Molycorp Mine

I hope cooler heads prevail for our collective good. Some of the other PROs of EVs are super acceleration, due to instant torque, low noise from power plant, although a lot more EV owners complain about higher levels of road and tire noise in their cabins.

A 1,000-pound lithium EV bat tery, for example, contains 25 pounds of lithium, 30 pounds of cobalt, 60 pounds of nickel, 110 pounds of graphite, 90 pounds of copper, and another 400 pounds of steel, alumi num and various plastic components. In order to obtain those quantities of ores, 500,000 pounds of earth must be extracted and processed.

I really do not see the “benefit” of EVs at all. To me, a much more logical ap proach to a greener mode of trans portation is the Hydrogen Powered Vehicle. It’s basically a standard vehicle as we know it, which con sumes hydrogen (abundant in na ture) and produces water vapor as a by-product. There are several auto manufacturers that have taken a hard second look at hydrogen.

Averaged over a battery’s life, each mile of driving an EV consumes five (5) pounds of earth. Using an ICE vehicle consumes 0.2 pounds of liquids per mile. Here’s a picture of just one of those open mines to extract rare earths and other necessary materials for EV batteries.

Many of these issues will probably get better as time goes by and technology improves, but still, to me, it’s a noPersonallygo. I don’t ever foresee Landfill But even worse is the fact that this technology is being touted as renew able energy when in reality no energy system is actually “renewable” since all machines require continual mining and processing of primary materi als and the disposal of hardware that eventually wears out.
