From the Editor… As the saying goes health is wealth, so here are our few cents on Health & Wellbeing for the whole family wrapped up cover to cover in our annual Health & Wellbeing Issue. Our motivation coincides with some fabulous community initiatives, Physical Activity Month and the launch of the Active & Healthy guide by the Gold Coast City Council. Plus on July 29 in Varsity Lakes the annual Children’s Health & Wellbeing Expo returns, which we proudly support. Come along and meet some of the Coast Kids team on the day! As we put this issue together, I was overwhelmed with the great ideas, businesses, cookbooks, programs and products on the market that are geared towards our wellbeing. We barely touch the surface, however I feel there are some really great ideas and knowledge to be learned in this issue – so enjoy and embrace your and your family’s health and wellbeing. If you are like me, (guilty as charged) of putting yourself last on the priorities list, I hope you will gain a bit of motivation (as I have!) to change your ways and look after ‘you’! There is a reason the pilot tells you on an airplane to adjust your oxygen mask first, then your children’s. Make a note to schedule that beach walk, yoga class or run after school drop or take that time to read, make a healthy snack – you deserve it! In health & happiness

Reviews Absorbing Apps When parents think of smartphone apps for kids, they want educational and fun activities. If you have a tablet, even better as the larger size is easier for kids to use. The advantage of iPhone and iPad over other android devices is the range of apps is much broader since they are tied to the iTunes App store, whereas the hot apps may take months to reach the android marketplace. And while there are a plethora of choices out there, these two come highly recommended by Computing with Kids editor, Jinny Gudmundsen.
Bugs and Buttons With vividly realistic bugs (including bees, roaches, ants and tarantulas) and brightly colored buttons, kids engage in games that teach counting, sorting, patterns, path-finding and more. Each of the 18 games is masterfully crafted so that kids learn while they play. Little Bit Studio, LLC, for ages 4-6.
Doodlecast for Kids This app magically turns a child’s drawing into an animated, narrated story. By recording the sounds children make when they draw, as well as the visual step-by-step marks made on the screen, the app turns the simple process of drawing a picture into a story-telling video. The videos can be shared with family via email or uploaded onto You Tube. Zinc Roe, for ages 3-7.
Books Nurturing a Healthy Mind There is nothing as fascinating as the human brain. Over the past few decades advances in technology have made possible new and exciting insights into how the brain grows, learns and operates. And there is now growing consensus that this knowledge is of great relevance to parenting and all manner of child-rearing contexts. Nurturing a Healthy Mind takes the available science on how the brain responds to environment stimuli and presents it in an easy-to-understand and user-friendly format. It ‘translates’ what neuroscience is telling us about the development of the brain from infancy to the early school years and explains how this knowledge can help us deal with the everyday realities of raising healthy and happy children. Communication
SKYPE SAFE Words: Dana Strong
What is Skype?
My kids are Skype pioneers. They were initiated into the world of voice over internet protocol and video conferencing through another platform even before Skype was launched in 2003. When they were both still in nappies, I used to set them up in their highchairs in front of the computer and get my parents online in Canada for ‘virtual babysitting’ sessions. My parents would read them books, sing them songs, perform puppet shows and just ‘connect’ with the kids. As the kids got older, they learned how to get Grandpa and Gran and other overseas relatives online for video chats and instant messaging themselves. They’d Skype them to share exciting news, to show off an award, to practise a school speech, or just for a little chat. Even many thousands of miles away, we’ve been able to share Birthdays, Christmases and special events in each others’ living rooms with distant friends and family. Free, face-to-face video chat on Skype – and now on Facetime and other competing products like Oovoo – has allowed my kids to develop intimate family relationships with people they rarely get a chance to see in person. I’m not naïve about the dangers lurking behind Skype for kids – bullying, obscene material, viruses and sexual predators, to name a few. Don’t let the potential risks outweigh the fun, the communication and the relationship building that video conferencing can facilitate, though. Instead, use common sense and take measures to keep your kids safe. Consider these tips:
Keep it out in the open Kids’ computers should be in common living areas, not in their bedrooms. You should be able to see what your kids see, and hear who your kids are talking to. This becomes a bit tricky when it comes to mobile devices like laptops, smart phones, iPods and tablet computers like iPads, which all have video capability too. You might make a rule that even mobile devices need to be used in public areas of the house. At night time, if your child wants to take their iPod into their room to listen to music as they go to sleep, you could turn off your wifi connection for peace of mind that they won’t be tempted to get online for a chat.
Don’t put personal information in profiles Young children will likely use their parents’ Skype accounts, but older children may want to create their own. There is no age restriction for children creating their own accounts. Make sure they don’t include any personal details in their profile. Skype does have security measures in place for users who enter a birthdate as
being under 16, such as only allowing people in their contact list to make contact, concealing their age and gender and hiding them from search results unless they are returned as an exact match by Skype Name or email. My suggestion, though, is to not enter ANY information, including birth date, and then set the privacy levels high (see next point).
Set privacy levels high On a PC, open Skype and click ‘Tools’. Then go to ‘Options and ‘Privacy’. On a Mac, open Skype and click ‘Preferences’ and then ‘Privacy’. Set the options to only receive ANY incoming communication (calls, video, instant messages) from contacts already on the contact list. This will protect your children from contact by people they don’t know. In this section, there is also an option for keeping Skype chat history. Set this to ‘forever’ so there is a record of all communication on the Skype account. This can be particularly useful if your child complains of being bullied or harassed or of inappropriate communication.
Create strong passwords Hackers try lists of common passwords and password variations to crack passwords, so ensure your children use strong passwords. Help them create their passwords so you know what they are, too, in case you need to access their accounts. Here are some tips for creating strong passwords: • make them at least eight characters long • use a combination of letters, numbers and characters • include upper and lower case letters • don’t include your name, phone number, pets’ names or birth date
Use Skypito Skypito is a free, downloadable product designed to mimic Skype but created specifically for young users, ages 2-14. It gives parents full control over their children’s contacts while giving kids the independence to make calls and chat with friends and family on their own. It offers some additional kid-friendly entertainment, too, like a collection of games to play between contacts and ‘surprises’, which are little animated characters that kids can send and receive. Check out Skypito at www.skypito.com.
Skype is the world’s most popular free, downloadable communications product. It lets people speak to each other just like they do on the phone, only through computers and internet. If you download Skype and your friend or family member downloads Skype, you can make free voice calls and video calls to each other as well as send instant messages, screen share and send files – no matter where you are in the world! For rock bottom prices you can also make regular, mobile and international phone calls direct to phones. All you need for Skype video conferencing is internet connection and a computer with a built-in camera, speakers and microphone – or you can purchase a web camera and a headset with a microphone.
What is Facetime? FaceTime is a proprietary Apple application for free video calling between the newest versions of iPods, iPhones and iPads. If you have one of these devices and your friend or family member has one too, you can video chat for free with each other at the touch of a button – no matter where you are in the world. It doesn’t offer the other features, like file sharing, that Skype does.
What is Oovoo? Oovoo is very similar to Skype – it is a free download that allows users to make free voice and video calls as well as instant message, screen share and send files. Three main differences between Skype and Oovoo are: 1) People don’t have to download Oovoo in order to receive calls. That makes it easy for contacting people who are using public computers or who can’t or don’t want to download the product. 2) Oovoo can only be used on computers while Skype can be used on many mobile devices as well. 3) Oovoo enables free video chat with up to six people at the same time. Skype only enables video chatting between two people at a time.

e g n a h C Sea One in four Gold Coast residents is born overseas. Here, Bree Eve shares her family’s story of migration, the challenges of making a new home on the other side of the world, and the transformations she is hoping their sea change will bring.
Walking the Walk In my family I have a reputation of not liking ‘going for a walk’. Whilst no-one has ever told me I’m lazy, they’ve thought it. I’ve never understood ‘walking for no reason’; when there’s no destination in mind. And when there is a destination, it’s probably quicker in the car. I have always been the one who says, ‘I’ll meet everyone back at the coffee shop’ and I slink off with a magazine. Well, I don’t know how it happened, but I’m not that person anymore. It’s like my body knows all the fabulous outdoor activities on our doorstep. I start to get cabin fever if we go more than a couple of days without a run in the park or a play on the beach. We seem to have more energy since living on the Gold Coast and we are fast becoming people who just love being active and outdoors. These days we always have Woody’s bike in the car because a quick trip to the park becomes a part of so many outings. We also keep the beach bag packed and by the front door. If the mood takes us, we can be out the door in moments and have the sand between our toes in a heartbeat. We have always had the outdoors paraphernalia: the buckets and spades, the kites, the frisbees, the boogie boards, the tents etc. It is just now we are the people who use them regularly rather than just pulling them out of the cupboard once in a blue moon. It’s a great feeling! And as a result of our new enthusiasm for the outdoors, Woody watches
less TV than ever. We started this as conscious effort as Woody was watching too much TV. But now, it rarely crosses Woody’s mind. Most days, the TV does not go on until Woody is in bed. He still has his favourite DVD’s, but he watches them and then TV goes back off again. It shames me to say that in the UK our TV was pretty much constantly on in the background. The other really noticeable thing is we eat so much healthier these days. We all eat a lot more fruit without even thinking about it. We also tend to feel like eating fresher and lighter foods rather than the big portions of ‘comfort food’ we had grown used to in the UK. I tend to cook from scratch a lot more and avoid jarred sauces. I also tend to bake treats rather than buy them. I know these are just small things, but it is something I have always believed in, but never managed to achieve. I feel great about this. Now, I don’t really want to make myself out to be something I’m not (in case I run into any readers in a coffee shop!) I still have my vices; the latte and microwave popcorn to name just two. And in fairness, some of the positive lifestyle changes we have made are driven by budget constraints more than anything else. But the health benefits to the family are undeniable. My family now has a healthier and more active lifestyle than ever before. I am proud, (and frankly, a little surprised) of this transformation. I am now ‘walking the walk’.
Bree
I now call Australia Home! Joelene Nel - Lawyer, Mum to Kristina (6) and Nikolas (5) From Durban to Varisty Lakes, has lived on the Gold Coast for two years. What made you move to the Gold Coast? We’d been in touch with people who’d emigrated from South Africa and they’d come to the Gold Coast. We discounted the big cities because we did not want a lifestyle where we were commuting and had a city life. Durban very much has a similar feel to the Gold Coast. It’s a coastal town, with a laid back lifestyle, with good weather, and that is what we wanted. But just without the crime and lack of resources in South Africa.
What were you hoping for from this move? Primarily it was about the children. I wanted to be able to bring them up in a country and in a society that is not so disadvantaged and unstable. And then there is the safety factor. In South Africa you really do live feeling like ‘is today going to be the day that something happens to me and my family?’ We have family that have been held up and shot at. It is just in your face all the time. And I’d think ‘what is the country going to be like when the children are at university in 20 years time?’
What was your plan when you first arrived on the Gold Coast? Firstly I had to re-qualify because I have a South African Law degree. I needed to complete further subjects to allow me to practice law in Australia. So I found work in a law firm practicing family law, essentially as a paralegal. I worked and I studied by correspondence. I did that for 9 months but it became too much. I stopped working and spent the second year finishing with studying and spending more time with the children. This allowed me to help my daughter settle in at prep and where I could drop her off in the morning and pick her up every day after school. It also meant I didn’t have to put my son in kindy 5 days a week. To spend that time with them has been great.
How has your day to day life changed? There is a work life balance on the Gold Coast that you just don’t get in South Africa. In South Africa children tend to go to full time day care from when they are little. Part time working and flexible opportunities are not readily available. Now I work 1 full day each week and 2 half days where I just work until the school pick up. The other 2 days I am off with Nikolas at home which is lovely. I love the flexibility of being able to attend the special school functions for the kids and being able to do homework and extra activities with them.
How would you sum up life on the Gold Coast? I think the Gold Coast is great. I am just blown away by the facilities and activities that are available. Two years later we are still discovering new and interesting places. There is just so much in a relatively small radius. In Durban, there were never many free, safe, family focused events. But here, there are always things on in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, and it’s all free and family orientated. There is a great sense of community as well. It’s a great place to live!
What has been the most challenging part of the move? The roundabouts! No, I think because we wanted to make this work nothing has felt like a huge obstacle or a huge problem. We have been super happy.

Life skills
Loosen the Kid Gloves!
Words: Debbie Hogg
The Rolling Stones belted out in 1969: “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well you might find, you get what you need!” Because of our life experience we as adults know this to be true. So what message do we send our children when: • Running races – There is no ‘winner’ - everyone gets a ribbon • Musical statues – nobody gets out and everyone wins a prize • Asking for a lolly or chocolate bar in the supermarket and always getting it • There is no ‘pass’ mark in an exam – everyone gets a ‘mark’ • Junior soccer – there is no score kept so there is no winner or loser? Are we confusing our children and setting unrealistic standards? What is it realistic to? Do our children have ‘protected’ childhoods, where we keep them from being emotionally hurt, disappointed and where we assist them out of their infant cocoon? Are our children experiencing a childhood that may satisfy them in the short-term with their wants and needs however in the long term leaves them ill-equipped to deal with some of the left field curvy ones that will certainly come their way in life? As adults we know there is first, second and third place in an event. There is a winner of a game of soccer even if it’s the outcome of extra time. We don’t always get what we want and we certainly don’t all win the ribbon. The 10 | Coast Kids GC
outcome of promoting this type of behaviour with our children can leave us feeling at our wits-end, struggling to figure out what can be done next to keep the peace, save them from getting hurt and often wonder when the ‘unrealistic theatre’ final act will arrive! One day our children will discover the truth, and then what do we say? Is this the best place for us as parents to operate from? As parents we choose to operate from a place of protection and love with the belief that we are doing the right thing, however we are assisting the development of low self-esteem and confidence in our children. We are depriving our children of ways to develop independence and resilience. Unfortunately it is being reflected back to us by research and many child experts are finding that children in our generation are lacking basic life skills, it has been confirmed time and again that all children require life skills to grow up to be independent and productive in our society to grow and shine the way they were meant to. As parents we can choose to make some choices in assisting our children to develop and become stronger for their years ahead. The similarities with the following story and being a parent are huge. The Butterfly: One day a small opening appeared on a cocoon; a small boy sat and watched for the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole.
Then, it seemed to stop making progress. It appeared as if it had gone as far as it could. So the boy decided to help the butterfly; he took a pair of scissors and opened the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a withered body; it was tiny and had shrivelled wings. The boy continued to watch because he expected that at any moment the wings would open, enlarge and expand to be able to support the butterfly’s body, and become firm. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a withered body and shrivelled wings. It never was able to fly. What the young boy, in his kindness and his goodwill did not understand, was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening, were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.

Keeping it real
Routine Routine Routine With my third baby in four years on the way I have had quite a few people tell me that any routine I may have now will go out of the window when baby arrives, the older kids will get out of control and I will be more tired than ever before. Sometimes these comments annoy me but mostly they make me laugh. You see I am known as the ‘Queen of Routine’. I found having a consistent routine for my children provides them with a sense of safety and security, because they always know what they are doing. The same routine, which can get boring for adults, is actually quite exciting for kids because they like knowing they are in charge of certain things like putting dinner dishes in the kitchen, bathtime, helping brushing their teeth. It fosters confidence and independence. A typical day in my household starts around 6.30am: my kids play in their bedrooms together until I wake up at 7am. We have breakfast, get dressed, brush our teeth, and grab our morning tea which I try and prepare the night before and head out the door by 8am.
Words: Amardy Dhanoya
It’s the same thing every day, so we have become fast and efficient. Most days the kids have had lunch and are in bed for their afternoon sleeps by 12.30pm. I usually have a cuppa, relax and make afternoon tea for the kids for when they wake up anywhere between 1.30 and 2.30. There are days when they aren’t tired and don’t sleep but they go into their rooms and play quietly after such a busy morning. They play or do arts and crafts all afternoon and we all sit down to dinner together at 5pm, then it’s bath at 5.30pm a story or two, kisses, cuddles and lots of I love yous to each other and in bed by 6pm. Since they can’t read yet they look through storybooks most nights with their little torches and are usually asleep by 7pm. Sleep is very important for my kids as they are both high sleep needs children. When they haven’t had enough sleep they tend to become frustrated, upset, angry and easily distracted. I’ve learned to see the signs and when I see them, I react very quickly. I might give them a quiet afternoon or put them to bed earlier or lie with them if they are overtired and
worked up and can’t settle themselves. I see so many kids with these signs and hear the parents complain about how bad their kids are behaving when all they really need are a few good nights of sleep. Sleep affects learning, physical, emotional and mental health. Believe me when I tell you I need my full eight hours otherwise I find it hard to function. A consistent and quality sleep routine for our kids means they are ready to take on bigger challenges every day. People often ask me if I miss out on a lot of social activity with friends because of my routine and on occasion I do, however the health and wellbeing of my family comes first. Every now and then, a friend will baby sit so my husband and I can go out for an evening or my husband watches the kids so I can spend time with my friends and vice versa. But at the end of the day my husband and I chose to have children and we want to do what is best for them. There is nothing quite like a happy, healthy and harmonious family.

Health & Wellbeing
Secrets of a Super Chef Words: Fe Taylor
I love meeting vibrant people and I recently had the opportunity to share lunch with, and interview one of the most vibrant people on the Gold Coast: Brazilian Chef, Ronaldo Fulieri.
your child’s lunch box is crucial for performance at school and really affects their physical and mental development. I believe a couple of good examples of healthy lunch box snacks are:
Ronaldo is a nutritionist, dietician, personal trainer and is currently studying Naturopathy, and in his spare time has written a cook book too! He oozes health, is fit, healthy, energetic and has one of those amazingly natural glows. As chef at the Smoothie Shack in Nobby Beach, Ronaldo provides delicious nutrient dense food for busy people on the go.
Fruits and nuts - (e.g. 1 small apple and ½ cup of raw or activated almonds) simple and quick energy snack. Good source of fats and minerals for brain function, bones and muscle development.
Here Ronaldo shares his dietary insight for energy and wellbeing.
What brings you to Australia? I first came to Australia in 2006, to Brisbane where my goal was to study English and experience the Australian lifestyle. Initially I planned to stay between six to 12 months, travel around here and go back to Brazil to continue my career as nutritionist and dietician. However, I came across a course to become a personal trainer and I decided to stay longer to invest in that career. In 2007, I relocated to the Gold coast where I studied naturopathy, working as a nutritionist, personal trainer and healthy chef.
Tell us about your passion for food and nutrition? I’m passionate about food! I love the ‘superpower’ of nutrition and what food and nutrients can help you to achieve. I believe that providing the right environment and quality nutrition to the body, we can rejuvenate and regenerate ourselves and stay younger for longer, with quality of life. Fresh foods like fruits, vegetables and anything that comes from nature has the power to affect one’s health and change lives. In my cooking classes and education events I teach people about each food and their benefits and nutritive effect on our body and how to use food as natural therapy.
Tell us your thoughts on children’s nutrition. When parents make choices at the supermarket or farmers markets, they are investing in healthy food habits for the whole family. The quality of the food in 16 | Coast Kids GC
Sandwiches with wholegrain bread - Add organic nut spread, honey and banana for a sweet and high energy snack or add: avocado, tomato, grated carrots and fine slices of turkey for a high fibre snack with more protein and a good source of nutrients for times of the day where kids need more energy. Energy balls – with raw ingredients, high energy and nutrient rich super foods – These have concentrate levels of energy per gram. It’s a concentrate food source of many nutrients. I highly recommend these for sport activities and any other activity that demands lots of energy.
What are the benefits of wholefood and fresh vs. packaged foods? Whole Food means NATURAL FORM – unprocessed. This is better for you and your digestive system and a great source of fibre and nutrients. When choosing fresh produce it is better to choose vine ripened to improve bioavailability and body’s absorption of nutrients. Seasonal selections at the markets will help the body adapt to the SEASON, therefore helping the immune system and preventing health challenges. Live raw wholefoods if preserved adequately can bring many advantages because it is live food and contains enzymes that help the digestion and break down of food-energy and nutrients. Processed and refined foods lack many natural parts of the original food due to the refining process therefore they are low in nutrients and normally high in calories. If the food has been cooked and processed too many times it means it has high probability of being dead and if no natural enzymes and good nutrients cofactors to help to digest and absorb the food fully.

Tell me about your recipe book I produced the book with the aim to educate people all over the world and help them understand more about food. I wanted to help all types of people of different age groups learn about food nutrition and inspire them to love their food and use it in their favour on a daily basis. I was doing personal training and studying to be a Chef so I gathered my best health recipes together and made it into a fun and happy book, a type of book that even young kids can read and educate themselves.

Advice that I give in general for busy parents is: ORGANISATION. In order to achieve good quality nutrition you must be prepared: Plan ahead for the week. Being organised in advance and knowing what you are eating for the week and shop for everything you need in advance. Cook extra and save in containers for lunches or pop them in the freezer for quick dinners. Invest in fresh organic foods and quality super foods. It means more money towards your health and less towards health insurance. For more information about Ronaldo’s Classes and Recipe Book log on to: www.nutrifood.com.au

The gift of sound sleep Words: Anthony Sherratt
One of parenthood’s biggest challenges is learning how to survive on not only less sleep but constantly interrupted dreamtime. In fact the early years can be characterised by bleary eyes, lethargy and a mind that moves at the speed of treacle. There’s a reason why sleep deprivation is an effective torture technique.
“It’s really about responding to cues.”
Approaching childbirth, you’re warned that you’ll be losing between 400 and 750 hours of sleep in the first year alone. Having lived through what feels like a lifetime of lost sleep in only 30 months, I can tell you that estimate is on the low end.
Throughout our visit we had constant debriefs and reviews where we analysed what we were doing, going through the nurses’ observations and coming up with plans to get the girls into a better sleep.
Our twins were not good sleepers. To be precise there has never been a time when they’ve both been good sleepers at the same time. We’d struggled through two-and-a-half years of interrupted slumber before things took a turn for the (even) worse when one of the twins started having sleep tantrums. These awake-but-not-awake crying and screaming fits woke the entire household and months of them left us all worn out physically and emotionally. We were fortunate enough to be referred to a parenting clinic (aka sleep school). The twins and I spent five days and nights in hospital at the Ellen Barron Family Centre. Each evening a nurse would supervise me putting the girls to bed and give advice as various situations arose “There’s no simple answers and no one way to address sleep problems. We don’t have a magic wand but we do have a range of strategies that allow parents to help the children enjoy better sleep,” said Desiree Croft, Clinical Nurse Consultant for the Centre. The staff’s strategies centre around Responsive Settling where parents learn to read cues and body language and react in ways which promote healthy sleep without negativity. The very experienced nurses calmly guided my responses to the girls; helping me establish routines, boundaries and behaviour in a controlled manner that didn’t involve letting distressed children cry. Desiree says responsive settling is all about how the infant is feeling and shouldn’t be confused with controlled crying where everything is based on set times. “If you need to pick up a crying baby to comfort then you do it. That’s what controlled settling doesn’t do. It’s a timed approach regardless of how the parent and child are feeling. And regardless of how the infant responds to it or where they are at. 18 | Coast Kids GC
For our toddlers most of the strategies we implemented focused on behavioural management ... and not just theirs! I had to modify MY behaviour and how I interacted with them. I changed the way I addressed the girls during the night and when and how I went to them. We taught them how to react and established a new afternooninto-evening routine that eliminated some of our bad habits. “It’s about coming here and looking at what you’ve been doing… and how we can improve your strategies. It’s teaching YOU (the parent) the skills. You’re the one who needs to know how to manage it,” she said. “That’s why we don’t paint a particular picture that it will be fixed in the five days: that it is part of the process at looking at you and your behaviour and how you can change your behaviour (so you can) do this for the long-term. And setting you up so you can go home feeling you’re the best person to do this for your children and replicate it in your home environment.” For us we changed our routine by removing TV and electronic devices in the two hours leading up to bed. We brought in a very consistent order of events including a half-hour of quiet reading time immediately before bed. We no longer sit with the girls at bedtime, leaving the room after kisses. If they get up we put them back to bed. If we have to talk to them we do so in a calm but firm (not angry) voice. We accepted that it would take awhile for the girls to accept these new behaviours and that it may be hard work in the shortterm. These are just a few components of a much larger strategy and sound so simple I’m almost embarrassed I wasn’t already doing them. Looking back we made it hard on ourselves by rushing in whenever a twin cried because we didn’t want them to wake their sister. But of course at the time we were doing what we thought was right.
Coast Kids GC Approaching childbirth, you’re warned that you’ll be losing between 400 and 750 hours of sleep in the first year alone. Having lived through what feels like a lifetime of lost sleep in only 30 months, I can tell you that estimate is on the low end. Thankfully, Desiree has some reassurance for me in her general tips. “I really believe we sometimes try and do too much. And our expectations as parents are very high. So I think the key thing is if you can try and step back a bit. Parenting is such a beautiful time - it goes so quickly. Infants are not little for long. So the tip is try and bring the enjoyment back into parenting. “Don’t feel guilty about what you do or what you didn’t do. And surround yourself with positive people who bring you up not down.” To be perfectly honest I went to ‘sleep school’ hopeful of change but not really expecting it, but the staff were amazing. They were passionate, knowledgeable and patient. While it was intense, it was a wonderful experience. The girls responded very quickly. Rhapsody - the real problem sleeper - was sleeping throughout the night before the five days was up. Gypsy was a little more problematic but within two days of getting home had also embraced the new routine and was going to be bed without protest AND staying there. And somehow we were getting them to bed 90 minutes earlier than previously. We almost didn’t know what to with ourselves with our extra time! The Centre looks after all of Queensland (and parts of the Northern Territory) and you need a professional referral so not everyone may be able to attend in person, but the information and strategies are disbursed amongst Health Nurses throughout the state.
Alternatively Australian author Rebecca Sparrow has recently published an e-book with the vastly experienced Elizabeth Sloane entitled ‘The Gift Of Sleep’. Using ‘controlled comforting’ techniques, the book aims to show parents how to teach their children to self-settle and become better sleepers as a result. Rebecca said the book provides strategies for parents struggling with sleep problems. “What we know is that there are thousands of parents who are struggling with sleep deprivation and it’s impacting their mental health, their relationships and their ability to parent. We want parents to know that if getting up to your baby 3, 5, 10 times a night is wearing you down… there is help at hand.” Published in May it has already received rave reviews. One reader described it as amazing and in a touching letter said “I now enjoy my little girl again”. Rebecca said they don’t claim to have all the answers but the book provides more options for parents near breaking point. ‘The Gift of Sleep: the 3-day program that teaches your baby to sleep’ is available at www.thegiftofsleep.com. The Broken Halo Words: Anthony Sherratt
family fun
I took one of my twins to the doctor last week. I described the problem and symptoms including lethargy and irritability. At this point he looked over at her as she clambered, for the fourth time, up onto the examination table before giggling at herself and sliding down before enthusiastically running around it before repeating the process. “Lethargic and irritable?” he asked. And I felt like a liar. Embarrassed I tried to reassure him she’d been in near- constant pain for days and suffering despite appearances (she really had). Despite her current laughter. I think every parent knows what I’m talking about. Whether it’s poor timing or wilful behaviour, there are times when your kids will simply leave you mortified and perplexed. I call it The Broken Halo. It’s when your kids are doing their best terrorist impersonation and someone comes to visit. Or when grandma comes over to help in your time of need and is greeted by a smile and perfect behaviour. Instead of the devilish shenanigans all the visitor see is the halo. It’s not conscious toddler PR spin, but it’s amazing how many times adding an extra person into the equation leads to a “butter wouldn’t melt in this mouth” look. “I’m not exaggerating,” we protest but it falls on deaf ears. Recently we checked into a five-day stay at a family centre for some serious sleep problems. Both twins were having difficulties but Rhapsody in particular was truly struggling. She fought tooth and nail each and every night and was regularly having what would best be described as ‘sleep tantrums’ (possible night terrors). Gypsy was also sleeping poorly though it wasn’t clear if it was in reaction to Rhapsody’s noise and behaviour or a problem in itself. So we checked in, went through the daytime
sessions and prepared for the nightly thunderstorm to be observed by the experts. And, of course, Rhapsody went to bed without complaint. What?!? No really she’s not normally like that. Oddly enough Gypsy refused to go quietly and her behaviour kept us up half the night. Okay, unusual but that’s just an aberration. Except it wasn’t. Night two and Rhaps went to bed without protest and promptly rolled over and went to sleep, ignoring her screaming sister who was constantly getting out of bed and crying. On the third night I nearly fell over. Halfway through reading stories, Rhapsody declared “I tired. Going to bed.” and put herself to bed. For the first time ever. Seriously. I actually thought she was just screwing with me and was almost in tears with frustration. I truly felt embarrassed as I’d described in detail her behaviour and problems and here she was exhibiting the complete opposite. The nurses laughed my discomfort off and said it often happens. In fact she slept well and was perfect all five nights which left me a little frustrated and worried. Thankfully (?) Gypsy continued to resist and we learnt the necessary lessons to take home. it just wasn’t with the child we expected. And despite The Broken Halo behaviour I remembered that their wellbeing is more important than my coloured cheeks.

Get Strategic.
Just do it!! (Can I say that?)
Words: Ron Gibson
No one wants to get old. You’ve heard of the people who can’t get past the age of 39… every year! You might be one of them. I for one think maturing and getting to access your Super is good – it means less work and more play, if you plan right.
And your goals can be anything you want them to be, as long as you’re clear on what they are and whether you’re being realistic. Setting your goals and objectives is the first step on the road to getting strategic. Personal as well as financial goals
But the question is: will there be enough? Statistics show a couple would need approximately $54,000 annually and a single person $39,000 annually to have a comfortable retirement. Does that sound right to you?
should be included. Don’t think of them as two separate lists. Work out what your personal goals are and determine if you need more money to achieve them. Then work out the quickest way to get the money you
The average Super contribution over a person’s working life is $200,000. You would double this if both partners are in the workforce, full-time for 40 years. But something is just not adding up here when you put it down this way. Nobody will have enough super if they only rely on the minimum contribution from the wage they earn in employment. The problem is, we’re all too busy to take action and do something now. So I urge you to stop doing nothing about it. You can find a way. Even if you are earning way more than the average, without strategic planning and regular reviews, strategies lose direction – and opportunities are often missed or overlooked. Without a strategy you are effectively a “drunk driver” on life’s highway and a crash in one form or another is inevitable. Where do you start? You can and should start with the good stuff, like what are your wants and desires. Exotic holidays, a luxury boat, house by the beach, early retirement living in absolute comfort and financial security? Sounds good.
need. How? By developing a strategy and then focus on achieving it, but all the while ensuring you’re achieving your other personal goals along the way. You might be thinking ‘It’s not as simple as that’. Well you are right, there is a lot of hard work in the middle, but one thing is for sure it’s a lot easier to get somewhere if you know where you’re going. Get Strategic, Just do it! Help! When Head Lice is Rife
Words: Jeni Bone
It’s no secret that nits are running rampant in many of our schools and daycare centres, much to the distress and dismay of parents and teachers alike, who are just as susceptible to picking them up. Kristen Semmens, Founder of the Nitpro Head Lice Salons and Ziggetty Snipits Kids Salons, and owner of the Robina salons, and Tina Jolley who owns the Tweed Nitpro & Ziggetty Snipits Franchise, have seen more than their share of the problems that arise with infestations of head lice with over 10,000 treatment services performed in the salons. Nits are the eggs and lice are the hatched live animal. Nits can be light tan to dark brown and are semi-transparent. The white eggs are typically the very old empty shells. “The reality is they won’t go away on their own and left untreated serious health problems may arise,” says Kristen. But as she explains, “Lice don’t jump or fly. 99% of head lice transfer is via head to head contact. They cannot survive off the head for more than 24 hours and they don’t just come off like fleas; they want to hang on with their crab-like claws because your scalp is their only food source.” Poor hygiene or dirty hair have nothing to do with whether or not you get head lice. “Nits don’t care – clean or dirty hair will do. They are like mosquitoes, needing to feed. They are after your blood. The biting is what causes the itching. While lice themselves don’t carry disease, prolonged exposure to head lice can lead to scalp and health problems.” Some people think that finding just a few eggs in the hair is of no concern. But Kristen says: “Having eggs means you have lice. As long as there’s one, there will be many.” The plethora of treatments at the pharmacy can confuse parents and caregivers. As many parent
have already found out for themselves, most of the products developed generations ago are basically useless. “The head lice are immune.” This is why Kristen and husband David came to develop the company Nitpro, whose professional, in-salon treatment services use their exclusive nontoxic product. “Nothing worked for us with our five children when we went through the head lice battle for five years at home, just like everyone else.”
“People sometimes worry that their children won’t sit well for the treatment time in the salon, but with the bright kiddie atmosphere, toys, play areas, Wii, TVs and DVDs, entertainment is sorted.”
We found the treatments available at the time were too harsh on our kids’ scalps when we ended up with two of our daughters needing medical attention from a rogue over-the-counter treatment. We vowed ‘no more pesticides’ and we set out to find something that works. Our professional treatment services are coupled with our own non-toxic shampoo with activated salts, which is completely safe. It’s homeopathic and it works.”
So that’s the good news, but the reality is, the whole family, anybody in contact with children with head lice, can catch it. “The whole family needs to be checked at the same time and treated if there are any signs,” she advises.
Nitpro offers a two treatment head lice free guarantee. “After two and a half years and over 10,000 services we are confident in our services, and so we share that peace of mind with our parents by offering our two treatment guarantee... we administer two treatments seven to nine days apart and after the second treatment we 100% guarantee the current infestation is finished or else we re-treat for free.”
Kristen’s Top 5 Tips for Prevention:
Due to the current prolific breeding of head lice being nearly one in 3 children in primary school having a current head lice infestation, Nitpro cannot guarantee against re-infestations, however they are active in best prevention practices.
Don’t despair, head lice does tend to ease up as children grow up and become less inclined to engage in the kind of play that involves head to head contact, like close reading or wrestling.
• Hair up for girls; braids, buns and plaits • Boys, hair short • A natural preventative product used daily • Make sure all brushes, bands, clips and combs cleaned after a treatment – hot water over 60°C • Don’t share brushes and don’t rely on hairspray as a preventative (it’s only good for keeping flyaway hair under control) • Head lice can only live 24 hours off the hair. Wash bedsheets and pillows as a precaution. • Hats and teddies are not likely to harbour lice, but you can wash them too as a precaution. More at www.nitpro.com.au

Education With our Pony
Home Schooling:
a genuine alternative Words: Jeni Bone Andrea Pelikan, originally from Switzerland, is a busy business owner. She is also a busy, but not frantic, home school mum to three kids under eight. She moved to the Gold Coast in 1997, aged 21, as her family was determined to migrate to where it was “always summer”. These days, happily ensconced in Nerang with her husband, also from Switzerland and three children – twin boys, Alec and Vinnie six and a half, and daughter, Zorana, seven and a half – Andrea appears to have it all. As she explains, she gravitated toward home schooling in response to her daughter’s shy disposition, which has blossomed as a result of this alternative approach to education. “Zorana was quite introverted and I felt she would crumble under pressure, and not learn well in a classroom situation. In Switzerland, children start school at seven years old. I believe children start school too young here.” Two years ago Andrea began home schooling, after investigating the options and tapping in to the strong local network. “We began attending the music classes they offer and other opportunities like drama. The group offers support and resources, as well as access to teachers in drama, art and music.” While there’s no “curriculum” as such, the Department of Education is a great source of tools. “I am registered with the government, and just do my own thing based on their advice. We do very hands on, visual learning, real-life experiences. I follow the government’s recommended milestones. They tell me what is expected – the units to achieve, programs and options – and I send reports to them.” Because there’s only 11 months between her children, Andrea felt confident to take on the role of tutor to all three. While she admits her background is not in teaching, Andrea and the more than 70 families in the hinterland region are enthusiastic learners themselves. “We enjoy getting in to it with our kids – reading and teaching one on one. We learn together.” So far, the children are enjoying the blend of home and external learning. 26 | Coast Kids GC
“They enjoy all the free time we have,” says Andrea. “The one on one teaching means we have a lot more time to play as well. I try to make the world their learning place – at the shops, reading, not just within school hours. Shopping takes a lot longer, but it’s part of the learning process. There is no routine, other than a regular group sessions each Wednesday with five other families, where they learn languages, singing, art, culture and much more. “We take it slow, if people sleep in, that’s fine. We take every day as it comes. It doesn’t matter if we start from 10 or from 11. When we have starting times for classes and they understand being on time. They are still little. But it’s up to the person. People who have come through the conventional system can still be lazy or irresponsible.” The benefits are myriad, according to Andrea. Andrea teaches in English, and the whole family speaks Swiss German at home. Uniforms – a strange concept for Andrea, coming from Switzerland where as a rule, uniforms are not required. Contrary to some beliefs, home schooled children are not cut off from outside influences. “They do develop social skills and interact with groups in all environments. Home schooling doesn’t cut kids off from anything. They have teachers and other group experiences. There’s an annual sports carnival with a big group of about 100 kids. There are excursions to the police station, ambulance station, zoos and farms, concerts, museums and Andrea says, “the learning relates to each and every experience”. “I can adapt to each of the kid’s needs, and the way they learn. For instance, one of my twins is very visual and needs that hands-on stimulation, while the other one responds to reading aloud. “We made the decision to home school and stuck to it and for us, it just works.” Like everybody else, though, she acknowledges, there are challenges. “I run a business as well, which is my time out. We host students who live with us and they help me in the afternoons. I have
Zorana giving pr esentation abou

challenges the same as everybody, working from home and running my business (Demi pairs).” As for drawbacks or pitfalls, Andrea is yet to encounter any. “It’s a different way of looking at education. I am not as busy as the mums who have to drop their kids to school, fitting in work, then doing the manic pick up and rushing to after school activities. I think running around to drop kids at different daycare and school would be harder than managing a family this way. There’s not so much rush, rush, rush.” But is she wrapping the kids in cotton wool away from the harsh realities of life? Andrea doesn’t think so. “Before I became an architectural draftsperson, I did spiritual healing. Adults and kids respond to it. Some people don’t work well in the pressure of this world. I think of home schooling as a genuine alternative.” As for the future, Andrea says that if things continue in this positive way, her children quite possibly could continue to High School level. “I am just taking it as it comes.” More at http://www.hea.edu.au/

Words: Jeni Bone
As Aussies, we are known for our love of sports and the outdoors. Playing regular team sports is good for the body and for acquiring valuable social skills. Here, Zoe Pepyat from Little Big Sport shares some thoughts on the benefits of kids participating in group sports. Why should regular physical activity be part of all kids’ lives? Children are very impressionable and if we can get them enthusiastic about physical activity at a young age, it will hold strong significance for them as they grow older and hopefully, they will continue to exercise. This is why we put a lot of emphasis on the importance of fun in our Little Big Sport soccer sessions and we understand that our coaches are an important role model in children’s lives. In our experience, children learn through having fun and the skills are acquired along the way. What are the benefits? There are many benefits to having your child participate in a weekly physical activity program. Through the Little Big Sport soccer program we have found that it keeps children happy and active, and improves their coordination, motor skills, and understanding of teamwork. From a parent’s point of view, involving your child in a team will improve their social skills, give them a focus for their attention, and burn some of that pent-up energy! Our Little Big Sport soccer sessions are run with a maximum of eight children per session. With a small coach-to-player ratio it ensures high coaching quality. There is no registration fee and no minimum term when you sign up for Little Big Sport soccer sessions. Sibling discounts available also. How do your programs suit the needs and skill levels of different age groups? At Little Big Sport our coaches are very experienced and trained in coaching the different age groups. Our soccer sessions are designed for the different age groups and tailored for the varying abilities. Our coaches ensure that all children are always engaged and kept active at all times. At age two to three, kids have a limited attention span so fun, simple games with limited explanation and more demonstrations are the focus for this age group. Our soccer sessions teach them the basics of balance and coordination through themed activities.
By age four, children are starting to gain a lot of confidence and are challenging themselves. We introduce new games with slightly more complex skills for them to master, as well as more ideas around teamwork and sportsmanship, which aids in their readiness for school. At six years old, children comprehend the meaning of team spirit and sportsmanship. They are keen to play matches and enjoy the challenges of learning new skills. We work on more specific skills, as well as the concept of respect for our team mates as they develop stronger friendships. What are the other skills kids learn along with coordination, fitness and the fundamentals of the game? Children learn to follow instructions and gain self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment when they learn a new skill! The little ones will understand the concept of teamwork and develop a real love of the game as well. Through regular participation in a team sport, such as soccer, they develop new friendships and a love of the game and sport. What is some of the feedback from your participants and their families? We are always receiving positive feedback from parents, that their little ones hang out all week until it’s ‘soccer day’. It’s often the highlight of their week! Although they play for 30 minutes, soccer and being active stays with them all week as parents tell as that their children come home practising their new soccer skills. ‘Little Big Sport’ soccer balls and uniforms will be available for purchase at the end of July at very affordable prices - keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for details. We will be giving away four sets of our uniforms for four lucky Little Big Sport Facebook fans too! For an active alternative, invite Little Big Sport to host your child’s Birthday party! Midwife Matters
Medical Induction of Labour ‘Induction’ of labour (IOL) is the medical way to bring on labour and maintaining it. Induction of labour occurs when the risks of continuing the pregnancy outweighs the risks of inducing the labour to deliver the baby. It is important to understand the difference between an induction of labour and a labour ‘augmentation’. Labour augmentation occurs when a labour has naturally started of its own accord but artificial means are used to ‘speed’ it up or maintain it. Labour induction is starting the labour from scratch. Obviously, if your baby was meant to be out …. It would be! Don’t loss sight of the fact that we are trying to bring a baby (that may not be quite ready) out of a body that isn’t ready either …… it may mean we need to do more and more to get this baby out! Although common and generally successful - IOL doesn’t always work. Indications for a labour induction include but are not inclusive to: Baby overdue (A tern pregnancy is considered between 37 – 42 weeks. Over this time there is an increased risk of fetal demise); High blood pressure in the mother (also called PIH / toxemia - there are increased risks to the mother. Induction will occur after weighing up risk to mother and baby); Placenta function decrease (occurs for a number of reasons and is diagnosis by ultrasound. The placenta supplies baby with everything. With decreased function there is decreased blood flow
Words: Michelle Jackson
to baby & decreased growth of baby. Induction is based on case of better out than in); Diabetic mother (pregnancy changes glucose and insulin needs of the mother. High levels of glucose and insulin leads to increased growth and fat deposition in the baby leading to an increased chance of having a large baby); Medical conditions in mother (pregnancy has significant effects on the body and existing problems can be made worse. Induction will occur after weighing up risks to mother and baby). It is important to know that both mum and baby will be monitored throughout the entire induction process. Before induction, the doctor or midwife will perform a vaginal examination to determine if the cervix has started to dilate. In turn this will determine the method of induction to be used. There are a number of medical methods of induction including: Prostaglandin: A naturally found hormone that helps ripen, soften and hopefully thin and dilate the cervix. The prostaglandin gel (Prostin) is inserted vaginally near the cervix. Sometimes 2 or 3 doses over 24hours may be required. If the cervix is very unfavorable a pessary (cervidil) may be inserted to assist the cervix to ripen and/or dilate overnight. Artificial rupture of the membranes (ARM): This is when the doctor or midwife breaks the bag of waters with a small hook known as an amnihook. The aim of this is to trigger the onset of contractions and labour begins. For the waters to be broken
the cervix needs to be at least 1-2cm and head must be well down. It is preferable that the baby is delivered within 24 hours due to risk of infection. ARM can also be used as a labour augmentation. Syntocinon: This is an artificial form of the naturally secreted hormone from the pituitary gland – oxytocin. Oxytocin stimulates the uterus to contract. Synthetic oxytocin, Syntocinon is administrated through the drip and slowly increased until the uterus in contractions are frequent and strong. You may only need one of these methods… Or you may need all 3 depending on how your labour is progressing.

Date night
Cool for Cats – and their handlers
If you can’t find a baby sitter and still want a night out with your mate for some adult conversation and food to match, this is the next best thing – the kids out of your hair while you and your honey enjoy the serenity, all at the same venue. Jungle Cats is a new concept in family fun. With an extensive menu serving up bistro favourites at competitive prices, licensed bar, space to spread out or cosy up and enough age-appropriate entertainment for your littlies to leave you alone long enough for you to savour and perhaps, if it still lights your fire, seduce. Our date night experience began with hyping the kids up all day, in an attempt to animate ourselves to emerge from our cave on a drizzly winter’s evening. Luckily, it’s dark at 5pm, so dinner at pensioner-o’clock didn’t phase us. The underground parking made going out in the rain a breeze, and our friendly hosts explained the food and format, seated us and we got our growl on! Kids didn’t even spare us a backward glance. Socks on, they scurried off to climb and congregate jungle style.
A wine or two in peace and we sat back and savoured. There’s a subdued party atmosphere early, and the volume and frenetic food service rise as the night progresses and the tables fill. But there’s heaps of room for toddlers and older kids tracking between attractions and refreshments, and miraculously, no head ons with food-bearing wait staff. The menu is bountiful, the servings generous and there are more than enough healthy options so

your tribe doesn’t have to survive on fried fare. We sampled the Nachos, Salt and Pepper Calamari, Fish and Chips, Salmon and Potato Mash and Chicken Parmigiana, all with salad and veg. It was well-cooked and yummy. No complaints from the Lion King either, which is a rarity. Jungle Cats would be the ideal venue for a catch up play date, wet-day coffee and playtime, or a party venue that lets kids go wild! I had to haul the offspring off the playground for their meals so engrossed were they with playing with the “big kids”. That’s a nice touch. The staff are very proactive/hands-on, so your brood are always being monitored if not by you, certainly by the rule keepers for safety, hygiene and manners. There’s a train, car track and heaps of gross motor activities to keep your young engrossed. For the oldies, it was a novelty to make dinner conversation that didn’t solely consist of “don’t spill your drink”, “sit properly” and “wipe your mouth”. Alone at last, we covered these AND more! Talk turned to our renovations, imminent trip overseas, wish list for shopping, a few people-spotting bursts of hilarity, back to us and a few compliments exchanged, we are “IN THE MOOD!” Ok, so this isn’t the 5-star waterfront dining of our fantasies, but we had a few precious moments to ourselves and, lucky bonus, two sleepy cubs who dropped off in the car. We ditched the teeth cleaning and chucked, I mean tucked them in bed. Then we settled in, enjoying the silence for some much needed “us time”, snuggled back in our own den. Roar!
Jungle Cats is open 7 days. Dinner bookings are essential. Weekend admission: Kids 1-3 years $7.50, 4-12 years $10.50. Week days 1-3 years $6.50 and 4-12 $9.50. More at www.junglecats.com.au

Making decisions about your health: Words: Tammy Hoffmann
Questions to ask your health professional In winter, it becomes more likely that one or more, members of your family will get sick. Being sick is no fun and can make busy families even busier. It can also interrupt school, childcare, and work. Sadly there isn’t a “pill for every ill”. It’s tempting to believe in promises of quick cures and ‘speedy recovery’. The label ‘clinically tested’ is used frequently these days by companies to market all types of products from cosmetics to vitamins. Unfortunately, these claims often do not hold up to scrutiny. People like to think that health professionals always know the best answer. Unfortunately this is not the case every time. How do they know what’s best? While their education, training and experience are important, health professionals should also make decisions that are informed by recent high quality research information (this is an approach called “evidence-based practice”, which health professionals ideally should be using when making clinical decisions). You can question your health professional’s suggestions. This can help you to understand how they have arrived at their recommendation. Next time you go to your doctor or other health professional (e.g. therapist, pharmacist, or a complementary and alternative health practitioner), here are some questions that you should ask:
What will happen if I do nothing? What happens if you just watch and wait? ‘No treatment’ is nearly always an option, but often one that people don’t consider because they feel they should do something. Many illnesses get better on their own. Many get better just, or almost, as quickly without treatment as with treatment. But with treatment, there is usually expense (of seeing a health professional and the treatment, such as medication), inconvenience, and sometimes side-effects. Often it is better to treat the symptoms of an illness (e.g. taking pain relief for a sore throat) rather than treat the illness itself (e.g. taking antibiotics for a sore throat).
What are my test or treatment options? For many health conditions, there are a few treatment options (and as explained above, ‘no treatment’ is one of them). So first, make sure you are aware of all the options.
What are the benefits and harms of each option? Each option has benefits and harms. Some treatments will be more effective than others (which may even not help at all). Some treatments 34 | Coast Kids GC
might be more convenient or acceptable to you. Remember that treatment harms does not mean just the side-effects (although these are important). It is also the expense, inconvenience, or level of discomfort of a treatment.
How do the benefits and harms weigh up for me? Everyone has different preferences and values. Decisions about your health are a personal choice. What may be an acceptable option for one person, may not be for another. Only you can make a decision that is right for you and your family.
Do I have enough information to make a choice? Before you can make an informed decision, you need good quality information about each of these questions. Asking your health professional the above questions is a good place to start. If you are not satisfied or convinced with their answers, consider seeking another opinion. The Internet is a popular place to look for health information – before or after seeing a health professional. However, a lot of the information on websites is not accurate or reliable. Being able to work out which websites are reputable providers of health information and which are not, is a worthwhile skill. For example, websites that display the Health on the Net (HON) code (www.hon.ch) have been assessed as providing reliable health information. For those that don’t, you can assess their quality yourself with a short checklist called DISCERN (www.discern.org.uk) Becoming a savvy consumer of health and medical information is a wise investment in your family’s health. There are some very readable books written on this topic. Two books that are particularly recommended have been written by experts in this field (and well-known Australian medical researchers) and can be downloaded for free. Learning Blocks
Did you know that a child’s ear is at it’s most receptive between the ages of 2 and 7? Children learn their name first by hearing, then imitating. This is later followed by visually displaying alphabet letters. At the International School of Music we strive to create little musicians by using our very effective approach of Listen - Sing - Play - Read - Write. Grouped according to age, our students are capable pianists by the time those who are learning via the traditional system are beginning tuition. They have at their disposal, all the fully functional skills to take their music education to a higher level and this has all been achieved when we can optimise the receptivity of aural processing and in addition, before the pressures of primary school and extra-curricular activities come into their lives to compete with their time.
Learning Blocks is a locally owned and run educational centre offering tutoring, school readiness classes, fine motor programs and parent information sessions.
Our ‘Smart Squirrels School Readiness Program’ is for children aged 3-5 and aims to prepare your child for the beginning of school. With the Australian Curriculum now coming into schools, the expectations on our children are much higher. Our program includes fun, hands-on activities that work on getting your child ready and confident to start school.

Do we need to Detox? In the western world we think of having a “detox” as very new phenomena. This is not the case. Ancient cultures such as the Chinese and Indian (Ayurvedic medicine) have been using these principles to heal many ailments for centuries. When consulting one of these more traditionally trained practitioners they look for symptoms indicating whether the cleansing organs of the body are functioning adequately. These cleansing organs are the intestines, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system and the skin. If these organs are not working efficiently the day to day acidic metabolic waste products that we produce when we create energy and keep our bodies maintained and also produced from bad organisms in our gut are left in our cells, joints, lymphatics and blood stream. Some of the many symptoms and signs of “toxicity” are lethargy, headaches, skin problems, intestinal symptoms such as bloating and cramps, difficulty losing weight, puffiness in areas of our face and body
Words: Dr. Elen ApThomas
and joint or muscle stiffness just to mention a few. Unfortunately we live in a toxic world and we are poisoning ourselves. Not only from the air pollution and obvious poor food choices such as coffee, alcohol, sugar and many refined foods, but also even when we make better food choices there are pesticide residues in non organic fruit and vegetables and hormones and antibiotics in our non organic meat and eggs. Stress reduces the functioning of the enzymes that would normally perform these cleaning functions for us and when health symptoms start to appear often the best place to begin is to help the body perform in a more efficient manner which it does in a cleaner cellular environment. One of the best tools to assess whether your cells need a clean is with a live blood analysis performed by a naturopath or doctor. This will assess the functionality and nutritional status of the blood cells, the inflammation level in the blood stream and review oxidative stress markers. If these levels
are out side the healthy range then a detox would dramatically help the functioning of the entire body. A detox program involves reducing the toxic burden of bad organisms in the gut. Gives the liver and kidney much needed nutrients and antioxidants to perform its filtering function more efficiently and enhances the flow of the blood and lymphatic system. The best results are achieved when clean life style options are also undertaken. Dietary changes include increasing fruit and vegetables, especially the green ones. Incorporating fresh juices and restricting the intake of grains. The body needs lean protein and fish and vegetarian options are much less acidic. Increasing gentle exercise is often recommended. These programs often last between two and eight weeks depending on the results desired and when followed properly can result in weight loss, clean skin and increased mental and physical energy. Behaviour
Q&A
Behaviour Q
. My five year old clings to me whenever we enter new social situations. This can include dance class or even when I drop her at school, she hides behind me and it creates a scene whenever she has to experience something on her own. What can I do to stop this behaviour and encourage more independence?
A
.
New situations, social or otherwise can be quite uncomfortable for any person, particularly when they do not know what is EXPECTED of them – that is, what behaviours will result in positive and/or negative responses from other people? The way to combat this is to simply TEACH people what behaviours are expected of them during any situation. Once the person is taught their behaviour requirements, they will then have a very clear understanding as to what their EXPECTATIONS are during any new situation, thus they know what to do NOW and NEXT! For example: prior to meeting new people, we teach your child how to greet a new person.
Words: Tan Curtis
When we meet someone new we say: 1. Hello 2. My name is Mary 3. How are you? Or when going to drop your child at school When we get to school you need to: 1. Take your bag to the bag rack 2. Put your lunchbox in the fridge 3. Put your hat on the hat stand 4. Put your homework on the teacher’s desk 5. Wave goodbye to mum or dad 6. Turn and go to the block corner to play with the blocks (or any other alternative activity) Repeat these steps EVERY day in the same order and thus your child develops clear expectations of what is EXPECTED of her NOW and NEXT. The above are just examples, but you can make behaviour sequences for ANY situation to support a person to know what is EXPECTED of them during any given situation… just remember to make the sequences VISUAL so the person can constantly refer back to them and does not need to remember them.

WHY A NATURALLY ALKALINE WATER? BENEFITS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! Balances Body pH
helps this condition and can be up to six times more hydrating than conventional
The alkalinity of water is measured by what is called the pH level, which stands for ‘potential of hydrogen’. pH is a factor that has a vital effect on your blood’s capacity to uptake, carry and deliver oxygen to all parts of your body.
water. Enhance physical energy and gain greater mental clarity by hydrating your
Our body is alkaline and functions best in an alkaline environment. However, everyday life creates acid. Digestion, respiration and stress all generate acid and acidic by-products. Acid coagulates blood causing bad circulation. Drinking alkaline water, promotes better blood circulation, eliminating acidic waste helping the body heal itself. Antioxidant Alkaline water is a natural antioxidant because it produces hydroxyl ions, which can increase the level of oxygen in the body. Hydroxyl ions also neutralize harmful free radicals, correct the body’s alkaline/acid balance, and hydrate the cells. Ionized alkaline water helps reduce many symptoms of aging and increases energy. As a natural antacid, alkaline water can reduce acid reflux and help neutralize the acidity in the body to prevent sickness and some chronic diseases. One of the primary causes of disease is chronic cellular dehydration, a condition, which leaves the body’s cells weak and defenseless. Drinking alkaline water

r o f a g o Y ’ s id K s es n it f d n a n fu Words: Jeni Bone Schools, kindergartens and groups have a fun and physical option for active kids, with the KarmaKids Club program that uses yoga and imagination to take children on an interactive journey though the Australian bushland, African Safari or to a Magical Island. During the hour and a half sessions, kids learn various yoga poses all with memorable names like Danny Dingo and Penelope Peacock, becoming part of the story and taking with them the basics of yoga and characteristics of each creature. They then explore their creativity through song, craft and games, interwoven with educational elements about the environment and animals to inspire and engage lively minds. Run by Gold Coast mums and qualified yoga teachers, Skye Voloder and Angela Fitriadi, KarmaKids Club gives children the opportunity to enhance their fine motor skills in a fun and creative way. “Simple stories allow children to easily recall yoga poses and movements that they can then teach the whole family,” explains Skye. Far from being a complicated art form, Yoga is a great means of relaxing, centering and physical fitness.
“Yoga can be an effective self-help therapy for ADD/ADHD, Autism and the general health and wellbeing of all children,” says Skye, referring to their special needs program at Currumbin State Primary School, where students and teachers are feeling the benefits. “It can assist with a child’s flexibility, balance, breathing and capacity to learn. Best of all, and most importantly, it’s fun! Kids will remember it and want to do it if it’s great fun.” The Eco Ranger experience involves interacting with the Sanctuary’s wildlife with hands-on activities such as feeding the lorikeets and kangaroos, learning about animal care, seeing behind the scenes and vet hospital tours and much more. “As part of Eco Rangers, kids start the day with an hour of yoga and art. They howl like Danny Dingo, stomp like Eliza Elephant and stretch like Penelope Peacock, which gets them limber and focused, ready for their eco ranger duties. They also get creative with some art which then goes on display at the Education Centre for everybody to enjoy.” To join in the fun, kids can participate in KarmaKids Club at Fingal Primary School on the first Saturday of each month, $12 per child, and during the school holidays at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as part of the Eco Rangers program which is $55 for the entire day, 8.30 til 4pm. KarmaKids Club will be presenting their show with free admission at the Pines Shopping Mall, Monday to Friday in the second week of the September School Holidays.

Part time workers win Working women have scored a rare win with part-time workers gaining the most from the government’s promised tax cuts. All workers earning less than $80,000 will secure a tax cut of $300 or more from July 1 under the carbon tax compensation package. But the decision to triple the tax-free threshold to $18,000 will deliver the biggest benefits to working women. According to a new analysis prepared by Treasury, 4 million women, including working mums, students and seniors, will secure a tax cut under the changes -- though only because they are more likely to work part-time or in low-income jobs. The figures reveal 57 per cent of the 1.7 million workers who will secure a tax cut from of more than $300 from July are women. On average, these women will secure a tax cut of $500 each. That’s despite women currently comprising just 45 per cent of the Australian workforce, reflecting the time women take out of the workforce to raise children or care for older relatives. “Aussie mums do an amazing job balancing work and family life, and deserve every bit of help we can provide,” Treasurer Wayne Swan told media last week. “While mums have part-time jobs, there’s no such thing as a part-time mum.”

The Good Oil So much skincare today boasts “grease cutting” or “antibacterial” properties, which ironically can worsen skin complaints. Since ancient times, oil has been used in various formulations to nourish skin, strengthen brittle nails and add instant shine to hair. So it’s back to the beauty basics for this treasure trove of goodness, particularly as we battle the extremes of cold and heat, and UV all year round.

Wrinkle Wonder Soy – it’s a love-it-or-hate-it kind of food. But maybe you would grow to adore tofu, tempeh, and edamame if you knew this: It could help you look younger. Eating lean, nutritious soy foods may help smooth fine wrinkles and buoy your skin’s snap-back qualities, according to recent research. Those are two big victories for face freshness. Soy is packed with a special isoflavone called aglycone, and it appears to be the source of the youth-boosting magic. In a study of middle-aged women, those who took a daily 40 milligram supplement of aglycone noticed diminishment in the fine wrinkles (better known as crow’s feet) around their eyes. The women also enjoyed a smoother complexion and a big jump in elasticity. Aglycone is among several plant estrogens found in soy. Soy estrogens may help counter age- and menopause-related changes in skin by hindering collagen depletion and boosting the production of connective tissue cells in the skin. But according to the doctors at RealAge.com, soy is not without its drawbacks. Skip adding extra soy if you’re at risk for breast cancer. Several studies currently under way may
provide clarity on whether soy affects risk. But for now, it’s wise for women who are at high risk for breast cancer, have it, or have survived it to avoid soy and isoflavones especially in high-dose forms such as supplements and fortified foods. Limit soy if you’ve had kidney stones. Soy is rich in acids called oxalates, which might promote new calcium-oxalate stones, the most common type. If you’re on a reduced-oxalate diet, limit soy as well. Stick close to the whole bean. A growing stack of research suggests that soy’s nutritional power comes from the balanced mix of vitamins, minerals, isoflavones, protein, fat, and fibre in the original bean something products and supplements containing selected soy compounds don’t have. Instead of pre-made soy-protein shakes, frozen desserts, and energy bars (who knows which soy nutrients make it through all that processing) go for soy nuts, fresh soybeans (edamame), tofu and tempeh.

Coast Kids GC recommends an orthodontic assessment when a child is eight years old especially if you notice any irregularities with your child’s teeth or jaw. In many cases your children’s teeth are monitored every 6 to 12 month whilst their adult teeth are coming through, saying this, an assessment of a young child’s teeth does not and should not routinely lead to early orthodontic treatment. A beautiful smile is a sign of a healthy smile. Orthodontics focuses on treating patients that have irregular teeth alignment. Teeth that are in correct alignment function properly as they are easier to clean and are less susceptible to gum disease.
A Healthy Smile
At Gold Coast Orthodontists they recognise that every patient has different needs and pride themselves on friendly as well as professional service delivered to each person who visits the practice. Whether you’re an adult, teenager or child, their knowledgeable orthodontists and staff are committed to helping you achieve the smile you deserve - a healthy, beautiful one! Words: Monika Radic
As parents we often question the best time to get our children’s teeth checked or have concerns that their teeth are not developing correctly - will they require orthodontic treatment? To put your mind at ease, children as early as age eight can have a consult with an Orthodontist, helping to prevent orthodontic complications later in life. Many parents wait until their children are in their teens before seeking an orthodontic consultation, however, research has shown that this can lead to developing problems being overlooked. Mamas that rock
Keeley O’Connor interviews Renata McCarthy - Au Pair HOuse
Mamas that Rock!
Introducing Renata McCarthy, one local mama who started her own business after an overseas experience an an Au Pair. You could say it’s one key ingredient to a bit of sanity and wellbeing around the house – as a family you welcome an overseas visitor, provide room and board and in exchange you receive an extra set of hands to help around the house! Bliss many would say…
We chat with Renata to find out more about what is important to her and how she juggles business and family life.
What do you do for childcare?
Business Tell us about your business / current role? I started Au Pair House eight years ago, when I was in need of a helping hand, having no family around for support when I had my first daughter. Au Pair House gives that support to young families all around Australia. Au Pair House places au pairs from overseas into family homes as a cultural exchange program, where au pairs and families benefit from each other. Off loading certain daily tasks from busy mums, makes the day run smother not just for the parents, but for the kids too.
What time does a typical day start for you? My day starts at 6.30 am and I start in the office at 9 am.
KIDS
I have two daughters, 4 and 7 years old. The youngest goes to Gumleaf Gully four days a week and the oldest is at school.
Do your kids do many extra curricular activities? Only my oldest daughter does guitar lessons once a week and art and craft at afterschool care twice a week.
What do you do for fun with the kids? Beach, picnics, bike rides, lots of craft and music. I really enjoy my time with them.
FUN What is your favourite thing to do for date night with your partner? We love going to the cinema and Max Brenner for a treat after the movie!
Do you have help around the house?
What is your favourite Gold Coast place to hang with the family?
Yes, from my husband and from our au pair Yuka, who has been with us since June last year.
Burleigh Point and Currumbin beach/ creek.
Who does the cooking and cleaning at your house? I enjoy cooking, I cook every evening. We have a cleaner every second week, however we share the light housekeeping daily between us and our au pair.
How about favourite place to eat out as a family? With kids – Robina Town Centre restaurants or Vecchia Roma in Burleigh.
If you have 10 minutes to yourself – what do you do?
GIRL STUFF
I work from home most days; If I have a quick 10 minutes break during work time, I like to go outside for a coffee to have a quick break from the computer screen and enjoy watching our pets playing in the garden or call a friend to catch up on something.
My friends and I are into Japanese food, so we always try different Japanese restaurants around Gold Coast or coffee every two weeks after dropping the kids at school.

The skill we are using this time is ‘tracing’ which may come easy to us grown ups, but kids find this harder than you think. It takes them time and precision, it’s enjoyable and the best thing is all you need is some paper and pencils. Of course, other elements can be added to make the end results more colourful.

How to…
Adults or older children go in search of some common household objects to trace around. These items could be a tea cup (laid on its side), cutlery, keys, sunglasses, shoes, leaves, underwear (that will receive some giggles), bath toys. Without the younger child seeing your items, trace around them, return them and the children have to go in search of the traced object. Then they must give the item a go focusing on holding the item down in place and tracing around it. Then ask them to colour the tracing in either with tones to give a 3D look or if they are younger, perhaps a few patterns to jazz up the drawing. For older children, get them to try and copy the tracing or draw the object sitting in front of them. They should be able to try and put some tone into these drawings to help build up a 3D image. Now it’s the younger child’s turn. Get them to trace around an object, return object and get you to figure out what they have traced and go collect item. A bit of fun for a cold or wet winter day!
