By moving the device around, your little pilots steer the helicopter wherever they want it to fly, and then land on different surfaces to pick up more passengers. We have been in Australia for almost a year. We are very happy people and continue to thrive in this gorgeous part of the world, with one exception. We have not really found our anchor, something solid to build our lives around. My husband, Noah, has ended up working from home and I am studying an online course. And although we have found a brilliant kindy for Woody, he starts Prep in January. I was researching local schools for next year for Woody when it dawned on me, we can live anywhere. Yikes, that is an overwhelming thought. Now, my research into local schools was already fairly extensive. So extensive, in fact, that when my brother suggested on Facebook that I might be addicted to researching schools his comment received enough ‘likes’ to indicate that other people agreed. Undeterred by this, I widened the search. So wide that we had a spur of the moment trip to the Sunshine Coast and started looking at properties in Sydney. You see, there is a lot riding on our next move. Firstly, it is where Woody will have his first experience of school. I loved school and I want Woody to also love school. Based on no research whatsoever, I believe there is a link between how much you enjoy school and how much you get out of the experience. So, I have been looking for something Woody will love. Let me tell you, this is a tricky thing to measure and plot on my school analysis spreadsheet. Secondly, our next move is where we will buy a house and live happily ever
after. So, we have to find a school we like in an area we can afford to buy and want to live. Next, we want our lives to revolve around the water so it also needs to be 10 minutes from the beach. It also needs to be walking distance to school for two reasons: The first reason is that I always walked to school and loved the walk home chatting with friends, dissecting the day. The second reason is that I am terrible at parallel parking and the idea of twice daily school parking chaos fills me with dread. We are also looking to settle somewhere which is walking distance to somewhere to grab a coffee and a bite to eat. As I am sure I have mentioned before, caffeine is my Achilles heel. Finally, as much as I like analysing everything on a spreadsheet, I also need to get a great ‘gut feel’ to know I have found the right school and the right area for us. These ‘must haves’ have resulted in many hours visiting schools, comparing schools, plotting routes on Google maps, viewing properties, and doing searches on real estate websites. But as of today, I am liberated from all this searching. We have found a house and a school, and all of the boxes are ticked in terms of what we have been looking for - Varsity Lakes here we come! So tonight, I relax and enjoy this moment for tomorrow I will need to get packing!

I now call Australia Home! lisA roChe - muM to daNiel (10), harrY (7) and emilY (2 1/2) froM maNchestEr, enGland tO meRmaid waTers thRee yEars aGo. How did you end up in Mermaid Waters? 10 years ago I was in an antenatal group and a few years later one of the other mum’s emigrated to Australia. We kept in touch and it sounded like a fabulous life. We’d thought of emigrating too so we came for a holiday and just loved it.
So what happened next? We went home and got on with our life. One day we got completely drenched in a downpour, we just burst out laughing and decided to fill in that immigration form. We applied for a permanent visa and got it.
How long did the process take? It took 18 months from start to finish. We put our house on the market but we did not get the right offers. We weren’t in a rush. We thought we’ll just go over for a holiday again and activate our visas. But you’re sat there with these Visas, knowing what life you could have. In the end we said, ‘what are we waiting for?’. We rented out the house and made plans to leave. We leapt off that rock and I will never look back.
And what did your family say? My Mum was devastated when we said we were leaving. But she came over when Emily was born and from the minute she saw how happy the kids were, the lifestyle we had, and how great everything is she completely understood why we were so desperate to come.
What did you do when you arrived on the Gold Coast? We stayed with our friends for quite a few weeks and then we moved into an apartment until we found a house. Our friends opened their house to us, welcomed us with open arms and showed us this beautiful life they had. I’ll be eternally grateful for that. Most people come over and it’s all very stressful - they took all that stress away. We just fell in love with this area.
Is there anything that has been a challenge or overwhelming? It’s lonely when you first move over here. They say it takes two years to feel settled somewhere. Since then I have met a fabulous group of parents that has formed my main circle of friends. Some of them I feel like I have known for years. Thank goodness for the mums at school!
How would you sum up how your everyday life on the Gold Coast compares to the UK? I can’t – there’s just no comparison. We lead a different life now. I’m not in the rat race anymore. I am not rushing to the get the children in the car in the morning, to drop them off at childcare so I can get to work. There’s none of that. They are up much earlier for a start. We’re all up at 5am - I didn’t realise there were two 5 o’clocks in the day until we moved here!
How have you adjusted to your new life? I love it. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself. At the weekend we were sat around the garden and I said to Andrew, ‘How lucky are we? Did you ever think we would be sat here in Australia?’ He said, ‘Not in my wildest dreams. It’s the best thing we’ve ever done!’ These days I don’t feel like we have to go on holiday - every weekend is like a holiday for us. If anyone was ever thinking of emigrating and was scared I would say, ‘life is too short to not try’. Don’t be the person saying, ‘I wish’.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration stration has given the go-ahead for a new rating of SPF50+, with label changes following over the summer. Sunscreens that contain sufficient UVB protection may increase SPF claims from 30+ to 50+ and all sunscreens will be required to include a new, higher protection level against cancer-causing UVA rays. “For the first time what they say on the box is actually going to mean something,” says Dr Greg Goodman, associate professor of the Dermatology Institute of Victoria. “Our understanding of UVA has improved along with the testing. We now know UVA sets up immuno-suppression and the chance of getting skin cancer. UVA is the main cause of suninduced skin ageing.” The new standard brings Australia – which leads the world in skin cancer deaths – in line with the US. In Europe and Britain where SPF50+ products are commonplace, sunscreens are classified as toiletries rather than regulated as medicines as in Australia.

jElLuRgal sHeDs lIgHt on aBoRigInAl Past and pReSent The fully refurbished Queensland Parks and Wildlife Information Centre at the foot of Burleigh mountain will soon welcome the Gold Coast’s first dedicated Aboriginal Tourism and Cultural Centre, Jellurgal. Jellurgal is the Aboriginal name for the 25 hectare rainforest stretching across the headland from Tallebudgera Estuary to Burleigh, created thousands of years ago by the first inhabitants of the Burleigh Headland to mark the resting place of the dreamtime giant, Jabreen. The Aboriginal tourism centre is an initiative of Kalwun Development Corporation. Cultural Promotions Coordinator, Billie Edwards, says branching into Aboriginal tourism will fulfil Kalwun’s moral responsibility to preserve, promote and share Aboriginal culture.
“Jellurgal will be a relaxed, educational and enlightening Aboriginal experience where the whole family can discover more about the traditional landowners of the Gold Coast, particularly the Burleigh Heads area,” said Billie. Visitors can meet the artists, watch as they create their paintings, and learn the stories that inspire the artwork and its elements. Billie says that tourists can be assured that the artwork and artefacts are genuine and by visiting the centre they will be helping to promote local artists and Aboriginal culture. Jellurgal will also have a café and amphitheatre. More at www.jellurgal.com.au
“The Gold Coast is one of the biggest holiday hotspots in Australia but it has more to offer than the majority of tourists, and even locals, are aware of,” said Billie. “This centre will provide tourists with a balance between the hype and excitement of theme parks, shopping and beaches and the rich cultural history of the destination. Communication
tExTiqUeTtE: the doS and don’ts of Text mEsSaGing Let’s talk about texting. Yes, that’s right, ‘talk’. Some of us, parents and children included (especially teens), seem to be losing the art of picking up the phone or sitting down together and actually conversing. Texting is taking over. If you need proof, consider these statistics:
Words: Dana Strong
• Texting – not talking – is the #2 use of cell phones. (The #1 use is checking the time.)
• It can be visual. They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, and I can quickly and easily send photos via text messaging.
• 2.4 billion people worldwide are active texters
• It’s better for the environment. Texts use a third less energy than phone conversations to impart the same information.
• 9.6 trillion text messages are forecast to be sent in 2012 • Kids ages 11 – 14 spend, on average, 73 minutes a day texting • 18 – 24 year olds send and receive, on average, 50 texts a day
My verdict: texting is good. But, I do draw the line. There are times when texting just doesn’t cut it for me.
• More than ½ of all Australian adults send or receive at least 1 text every day
whEn teXting goes too faR
• More than a third of adults would prefer to be contacted by text message on their mobile than by a voice call.
Have you received a wedding invitation via text? How about a birth announcement? Have you been dumped via text, or had a ‘textument’ – an argument via back and forth by text message? Have you ever received a text message that was as long as a novel or so complex that you simply couldn’t decipher what it meant? Have you ever been totally offended by a text you’ve received, only to find out that you completely misinterpreted the message?
Personally, I am a hard core texter. I find texting to be an easy, efficient and immediate form of communication. I text my husband, my kids, my friends, my work colleagues, and even the babysitter. Why? • It’s unobtrusive. Unlike making a phone call, I can shoot off a text without worrying that the timing might be bad or that I might be interrupting something important. I can send my friend a text even when I know she’s busy and feel confident that she’ll look at it when she’s ready. • It’s in writing, so it’s verifiable. If I text the babysitter a date and time, there’s no confusion. • It’s as permanent as I want it to be. If the mum of one of my child’s friends texts me their address, I can keep it in my messages and refer to it anytime my child wants to visit there. And if the childhood friendship wanes, I can just delete it. • It’s quick. If I just want to let my husband know I’m running late, it takes less time to send a text than to make a call. • It’s quiet. It’s much more considerate to send a text than to make a call when you’re, for example, in the library or waiting at the doctor’s office. 10 | Coast Kids GC
Have you ever been out to lunch with someone and had them interrupt your conversation by reading – and even replying to – a text? Have texted while you were driving? Have you seen or been ‘that parent’ who spends the afternoon at the park with the kids sending and receiving texts instead of playing and engaging? Have you received a text from your teen, who is upstairs in their bedroom, asking you to bring them a snack? My answer to all of these – except being dumped – is yes. And I think all of these situations cross the line of text-appropriateness. In our high-tech, mobile world, texting can be a useful and effective communication tool – if we use it with consideration and thoughtfulness. There are rules of etiquette to keep in mind, to put into practice and to model for our children as they grow up in a world where texting continues to grow in use and popularity. The bottom line is to use common sense, discretion and courtesy.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF MUSIC
GROUP MUSIC COURSES teXtiquEtte ruleS
usE thesE teXtiquEtte ruLes fOr guIdance. • Do keep it simple and straightforward. Texts are best used for brief communication – anything longer than about 160 characters would probably be better communicated in a phone call or an email. • Do be aware of your tone. It’s really hard to discern tone without body language or facial expressions to read. Being flippant or sarcastic can be easily misinterpreted. • Do identify yourself. If you’re texting someone who might not have your number saved in their phone, make sure you let them know who you are. • Do respond. It’s common courtesy to let the sender know you’ve received their message – when it’s convenient for you. You don’t have to jump on it as soon as you get it, but don’t leave the sender hanging on, wondering if you got the message or if they’re not important enough for you to acknowledge. • DON’T TEXT WHEN YOU’RE DRIVING. You won’t know what hit you - or what you hit - if you are pounding out a message on your keyboard. That extends to the rule ‘don’t text when you’re doing anything that you should be focusing your attention on’ – which includes playing with your kids at the park or watching their dance recital. Model this rule so your kids will understand when you tell them not to text when they’re at school. • Don’t text important conversations. Revert to phone calls or face-toface chats if the message is about relationships, major life events, personal issues or critical work matters. Text messages can easily be misinterpreted or come off as flippant or impersonal. Never break up with someone via text. Ever.

• Don’t text when you’re engaged with someone face-to-face. It sends a message loud and clear that whoever you are with is less important that the person you are texting. • Don’t expect an immediate reply. One of the benefits of texting is that you can send – and read – messages at your own convenience. Just because the time is right for you to send a text doesn’t mean the time is right for the recipient to read it and respond. Practice patience, and definitely don’t send another text a few minutes later asking if they got your first text!

It's Christmas time again, the cards are sent representing happy families gathering together around the turkey dinner or children anxiously opening their presents hoping for what’s on their wish list. We all look forward to having a harmonious time of celebration and a special Christmas. Unfortunately, reality and fantasy don’t always align. Emotional and geographical distance can often prevent the sharing in the Christmas spirit which can bring sadness and a sense of loss and missing out. Financial stress throws the wish lists out creating a feeling of disappointment and often it’s around this time of the year that we are reminded that not everyone gets on and tension starts. We may find ourselves feeling stuck with how to communicate and how to deal with all these strange ups and downs. At Christmas we tend to leave our general routine and move into a phase of what others expect. Invitations appear for parties, disagreements happen because one partner doesn’t want to go because they don’t want to spend time with that friend or go to that same old family event; financially it’s just too much of a stretch this year or you just want to do ‘something different’. You are the chief organiser, cook and bottle washer

for the entire family and it’s difficult to get the energy to do it all over again. What do we do? What conversations happen within our family or in our own minds about what we truly want this year? Do we say something or do we simply go along because that’s the expectation? If we go because this is the expectation or choose to not say anything, what impact does this have? We know in our heart that we want to be true to ourselves and being out of alignment impacts directly on our health, wellbeing and mindset, just like a car. It’s draining, negative, disappointing and false, if we don’t fix it, just like the car, we will break down! This ripples out to the way we play out ‘Our Life’ and what we role model to our children? What do we want to empower our children with when it comes to expressing their own truth? Can we change the situation? Yes! Our mindset? Yes! Our fear (false evidence appearing real) of what others will think or feel if we say, “sorry we/I are unable to join you” or “we are spending our time differently this Christmas” or whatever words sit comfortably with you? Yes! By making small changes we start taking back control of our life, our decisions and our self-esteem.
tiPs to draw a liNe in the saNd:
If you truly don’t want to go to a Christmas function family or otherwise, don’t go! It’s very important to communicate this. If it’s camping, cruising or community services for you this Christmas just do it! • Ask for help; if we are the organiser this year, ask others to assist. The more help we get the more involved we will be and the more FUN we will have • Understand and appreciate people may be suffering; they could have lost a loved one, friend, job, marriage or house, circumstances have changed for people in 2012 and being sensitive to others will serve us well • Choose to value any differences; to do this we need to understand and appreciate them instead of judging or seeing them as annoying • Lower our expectations for everything and have an open heart, giving love and joy. It’s the small differences that we put in place for our own change and growth that will ripple out to others. We can only be responsible for changing ourselves not others. “We are never disappointed unless we have expectations” unknown • Listen to what people are saying, give them the time and space to tell us what is happening for them, we will be surprised at what we learn simply by using the two ears that god gave us, compared to the one mouth (very clever). Listening is powerful • Avoid excessive drinking. Alcohol drops our inhibitions and can cause some upsetting fiascos within the family dynamic • Be caring and respectful to ourselves. • This Christmas think about what we truly want! Allow ourselves to sit back and enjoy our children, family and the holiday break. Give children time to simply be children and climb in the tree and watch the clouds, to spend most of the day building a cubby in the lounge or the backyard. Empower and include our children on the decisions surrounding Christmas. • Be happy in your choices Life Skills Programs wishes everyone a magical and special Christmas.

In researching RBT figures for the period 2011/2012, stats show that in the South East Region (comprising Logan, Coomera and the Gold Coast) 559 177 Random Breath tests were undertaken. This figure is the second highest in the state. (** Source QPS State Traffic Support Branch 30 June 2012.) If we know that the Police are regularly undertaking RBT, and we understand that consuming alcohol has a negative impact on our abilities and of course our health, then why are so many willing to run the risk? Driving under the influence of alcohol reduces reaction time and the ability to concentrate. It can affect vision and hearing and can induce a sedative state. As few as two standards drinks can cause cognitive impairment which therefore increases an individual’s risk of injury. So let’s first be clear on the “standard drink” because not all alcoholic beverages are created equal, and nor are the glasses we pour them into. Knowing the alcohol percentage of the drinks you consume is paramount. Back this up with awareness of the size of the glass you are using- Are those lovely large wine glasses holding 1 or 1.6 standard drinks?

Remember too that as a general rule to stay under .05: • Men can consume two standard drinks in the first hour and one drink each following hour. • Women can consume only one standard drink in the first hour and then one drink each following hour. This difference is due to the fact that alcohol is absorbed in the body’s water and men have a higher proportion of body water than women.

whAt doeS 0.05 mean?
0.05 is the measure of the blood alcohol concentration, (BAC) and is measured in grams per 100 millilitres of alcohol. So a BAC of 0.1 would indicate that there is 100mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. Importantly, the BAC will be at its peak 30 – 60 minutes after alcohol consumption has stopped. The BAC is dependent on the amount of alcohol consumed. But there are many other factors that can influence your BAC including: • Weight • Fitness Level • Liver Health • Alcohol tolerance • Mood of the drinker at the time of consumption • Type of beverage • Age • And even menstrual cycle may affect a woman’s BAC The Queensland Health Alcohol Consumption Report of 2011 indicated that Australians consume more litres of alcohol per capita
Canadians (8.0). Alcohol consumption has become a social norm and the term “Binge Drinking” is something that we hear more of – but this does not just relate to teens. Alcohol intoxication disorder, more commonly known as binge drinking, has several different definitions, and the definition keeps changing. The Australian Bureau of Statistics defines binge drinking as more than 7 drinks a night for men, and more than 5 for women. A newer definition of binge drinking, supported by the NHMRC Australian Alcohol Guidelines, is more than 4 standard drinks per night. Escapism, fun, loosening inhibitions, stress relief, celebrations and of socialising are the top reasons for alcohol consumption. As we slide into the Festive season know your limits – both personally and legally. Keep tabs on your daily alcohol consumption. The consequences of your actions can far exceed a hangover the next day. Drink responsibly.

heRe arE a fEw tiPs to keep you And yOur lOved Ones Safe This FestiVe seasOn:
1. Ensure when entertaining there is water available and other non -alcoholic drinks available too.
2. Avoid the “top up”. Finish your drink before allowing someone to top it up. You need to be aware of how many standard drinks you are consuming. As the host, wait for your guests to finish their drinks before offering more. 3. Avoid salty foods as they only make you thirsty and encourage you to drink more. 4. If you are hosting an event, keep an eye on the intoxication levels of your guests. Have your guest’s car pool with a designated driver, or even offer to pick them up earlier so that they can catch a cab home.

For some reason, I took the second one. Every parent has friends who don’t understand how difficult raising kids is. And even those friends who KNOW it’s not all Ellen/Oprah and tea often fail to appreciate just how intensive this 24-7 job is. Make no mistake, it is a job. It’s just like no other job on the planet. For a start there’s no paid overtime. Heck, sometimes you’re lucky if you get a lunch break. You have to organise your own health plan. You are on-call ALL THE TIME. There isn’t a point where you get to knock-off, just temporary relief if they sleep, or if you have an amazing partner or supportive family (or hired help). There are no financial bonuses for a job well done. No chances for promotion. In fact there’s often no recognition of your amazing feats at all. And intensive? It’s downright unrelenting. There are no holidays - just your job in different locations.
And no, you don’t get sick days: you have to suck it up and work through.

A parent has so many responsibilities it’s not surprising that sometimes some of us have doubts about whether we’re doing a good job. We have to be so many things and it feels so very important to get it right. It’s our children’s future after all so the stakes are high.
SC6: Demonstrated artistic ability. Arts and crafts preferable. Capacity for amazing imagination essential. Proficiency for uttering sentences such as “why yes, that *is* a giraffe with a snooglehorn and not a rock at all” a must. Acting ability obviously also required.
But just how realistic is it for us to be so versatile? How many jobs in the real world would dare to ask for so much across so many spectrums?
Experience at any/all of the following would be advantageous: chef, psychologist, diplomat, refuse handler, nutritionist, insomniac, teacher, referee, safety officer, sports/music/dance coach. Is it any wonder there are no licensing law requirements to be a parent? Who could satisfy this sort of application? Hardly any of us at all.
This is why ancient civilisations raised children using the entire community. Less pressure, more specialisation and more support. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed and having doubts about your ability as a parent, please don’t despair. No matter what the media tells you there is no such thing as a perfect parent. I don’t think any sane person reading this will be able to fulfil ALL the criteria. But if you do? Well then email me - I may have a position open for you.

Volunteering is a great way to put balance in our lives and pass on the importance of creating bonds and understanding within our community, experiencing compassion and giving of our most precious commodity, our time. Volunteering has so many benefits, there are no monetary rewards but what you get back is so much better! It is something everyone who volunteers feels and receives no matter how large or small your volunteer role may be. We sometimes take for granted the community that we live in. People and societies co-depend on each other for survival but as our lifestyles and commitments become increasingly demanding, we are seeing traditional values eroded. Volunteering, experts suggest, can bridge that gap. Volunteering is ultimately about helping others and having an impact on people’s wellbeing. What better way is there to connect with your commmunity and give a little back? Volunteering Gold Coast says the benefits include: meeting new people, keeping your skills up, giving back to the community and the sense of achievement that engenders, developing and learning new skills and experiences, building social and professional contacts, demonstrating to employers and schools that you have a healthy work-life balance, improving interpersonal communication and joining a fun and flexible work environment.
And the real beauty about volunteering is that is can involve everything from driving a car, to lending an ear to someone in need and it is also the soccer mum and dad who help out at the local footy club on the weekend. While there is a vast scope of roles and industries you can participate in, there are a few defining characteristics that denotes volunteering: no personal financial gain (except reimbursement for out of pocket expenses in some cases), free-will and

Pitched at girls and boys aged 5-10 years and published conveniently right before each school holiday, Leonie says many of the project ideas within Lotta are reinventions of things she enjoyed doing in her own childhood. Think cardboard cubby houses, 3D paper globes, colouring-in projects, painting projects, growyou-own gardens, puppet and toy making, DIY hats and costumes, magic tricks, games and even fun recipes for cooking. Most of the projects require items parents will already have lying around the house and, for others, free PDF templates are available for download from the Lotta website to make it easy to get started. “That’s the one thing I am passionate about with this magazine – I want the projects to be easy and fun for everyone, whether they are into art and craft or not. You don’t have to be able to draw, for example, to be creative,” she says. Each edition of Lotta magazine is inspired by a theme, as workshopped and approved by Leonie’s harshest critics – her nieces – who are also the magazine’s junior editors: The Story issue: Inspired by famous tales such as Where the Wild Things are, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, The Very Hungry Caterpillar etc The Travel issue: Fabulous ways to explore the world without leaving home The Secrets issue: Look out for superheroes, spies, magic, mysteries and surprises. Words: John Burchell
Mmm, yummy ham, turkey, mince tarts, plum pudding with custard – oh yes, lollies and chocolates, pastries and pavlovas - some of the foods we love to celebrate Christmas with. But how do we help our kids (and ourselves for that matter) celebrate and enjoy the seasonal delights when affected by conditions such as intolerances, allergies and the many diseases that restrict diet? Diabetics need to avoid sugars and certain carbs, coeliacs must avoid gluten, asthma and eczema sufferers may need to avoid a list of things, and there are always kids who have a reaction to specifics – such as a certain additive or colouring. Christmas can seem like it’s all too hard with dietary restrictions, really though, by applying common sense and some sound food principles, it’s not so daunting.
let’S staRt wiTh soMe baSic rulEs: 1. Hydrate your kids. Now, water seems very boring when there’s every kind of fizzy drink available. For many, soft drinks and flavoured mineral waters are out of the question. Water is much more fun with a bit of colour or coloured ice. Fresh berries, left to sit for an hour or so, will produce an intense coloured juice, Try blueberries, raspberries or mulberries for
pinks and purple, vitamised mint for green or apple, pear, pomegranate, orange, lemon and lime are favourite flavour enhancers and don’t forget good old lemon barley water. The Medical Sanctuary have just imported amazing new drink bottles from the USA which allow you to easily infuse water with fruits and herbs. 2. Refined sugars and carbs feed just about all the nasties – from bacterias, viruses and candida to cancer. So avoid them the best you can. 3. Support the liver and gut by avoiding binge eating and drinking (junk food and soft drink for the kids, rich food and alcohol for the parents). A great measure for the adults is to start and end the day with a juice of carrots, celery, beetroot, and as many greens as you can cram in! At the very least, have a cup of green tea or chamomile tea. Gluten free pastries and bread are readily available. For those who home-prepare foods, basic doughs can be made using rice flour, buckwheat, cultured rice flour, sourdough cultures, common potato, sweet potato or pumpkin. A bit of research will produce variations of this theme, and can be applied even to sweet breads such as gingerbread. Remember to read the labels when purchasing
packaged foods - I find that sulphites and sulphates are common culprits in allergic reactions. The most common additives in Christmas spreads are nitrites, nitrates, metabisulphates and sulphur dioxide – found in some meats, cakes, tarts etc. Go fresh with your turkey, chook or you can purchase additive free ham, they are easier on a child’s digestive system. One last tip for the holidays add a daily dose of vitamin C in water with some lemon juice which will make for healthier and happier kids, and B6 and Zinc if they appear a little run down and adequate rest in amongst all that socializing! Q&a
Behaviour Words: Tan Curtis
My child is primary school and seems to be growing into a pessimist! Contrary to my beliefs he seems to always look at the glass half empty and I am forever trying to change his attitude to look at the things he can feel grateful for. Do you have any tips how to help change his thoughts, cheer him up and show some positivity? In reality, in every situation it would be possible to find factors that a person would perceive as positive and factors that could be perceived as unwanted or negative. Two people could be in exactly the same situation and perceive it totally different… one positively and saying they had a great experience while the other negatively and saying it was a terrible time for them. What needs to be understood is that:
I CHOOSE CHART When I think about what might happen in the future
OPTION 1 Behaviour Choice One 1. I choose to look for the factors I do enjoy or I find positive 2. I choose to identify the factors I did find difficult and then… 3. I choose to take responsibility and ask: “what part did I play in that being difficult for me” I know I am “what could I do differently next time to increase responsible for all my my enjoyment in this situation” behaviours and my 4. I focus on the NOW outcomes
LEVEL 1 CODE BLUE
LIKELY OUTCOME ONE 1. People more likely to enjoy being with me & my behaviours 2. I will enjoy being with me
CALM AND WANTED BEHAVIOURS
I go closer to code blue
80-100% percieved control
We actually all have choices as to how we perceive each situation (past, present or future) Through our own choices we contribute to the outcomes we have in the world and our future experiences The I choose chart presents a visual to show people what are the likely outcomes if a person should continue to choose “option-2” behaviours… however further highlighting the outcomes if they were to choose “option-1” behaviours. With this approach, we are then able to support other people or ourselves to gain responsibility over our own life by saying… “This is my/your choice. If you want people to not enjoy being around your behaviour & for you to not enjoy being with you then keep choosing option-2 behaviours”. If you would prefer for people to enjoy being with your behaviours and for you to enjoy being with you, then you could choose option-1 behaviours. The Choice is all yours! This approach can be used with any person in response to ANY challenging situation. What’s important to understand is that not many people automatically know what are the option-1 behaviours that could be used. Option-1 behaviours often need to be taught and not expected a person knows automatically how to use!
OPTION 2 Behaviour Choice Two 1. I choose not to see ANY factors as enjoyable or positive … “Everything is negative or bad” 2. I choose to focus on all the bad things that have happened or might happen 3. I blame other people or events for the bad TAKE ZERO things that haven happened or might happen RESPONSIBLITY 4. I focus on the past of the future
LEVEL 5 CODE RED
LIKELY OUTCOME ONE 1. People will be less likely to enjoy being with my behaviours

2. I do not enjoy being with me 0-20% percieved control

“The Playgroup is attended by current families, children soon to enrol and members from the wider community. It’s held every Thursday and Friday morning in one of the Preschool rooms in the Early Learning Centre. Children and parents have the opportunity to connect with other families, share ideas and establish some lifelong friendships. The playgroup is the first step in the transition to Preschool, with many families finding that the transition is made much easier.
We aim to build confidence, social skills, motor skills and the basic academic skills required to start Prep. Classes are taken by fully qualified and experienced teaches and all lessons are hands-on and lots of fun. We help to expose your child to positive, quality ality learning experiences All classes are kept to a maximum of 6 children Classes are tailored to meet your child’s needs and ability levels You are regularly kept up to date with your child’s progress

After seeing many different health professionals they all seemed to agree that our son suffered from a condition known as ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder). It is often combined with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) with the addition of some further symptoms and a few extra challenges to deal with! “Our son was aggressive, hyperactive and just a constantly difficult child. With the health challenges experienced by our son we started a journey to set about trying to find the answers. “Everywhere we looked the medical profession told us that our son needed to be on drugs. I guess we weren’t ready to follow their recommendations. In the case of our son’s ODD/ADHD we just had an intuitive insight, a little voice inside that said, ‘there must be a better way’. “After he was diagnosed we did much research into the condition and the treatments that were available. There were too many side effects from the drugs, much of which we personally weren’t prepared to risk. So, not being prepared to take the ‘medical’ route we spent several years gathering and sorting through information that would help with our son’s hyperactivity and aggression. “What initially started off as an act of self-preservation turned into my burning passion. From that experience I wrote my first book ‘Hidden Dangers’. In this book I share all the years of research and reading, condensed down to an easy to follow format. "The Hidden Dangers book and code breaker helps people to make more informed choices about the products they use in their homes. Although my research initially was to overcome ADHD, the information that I came to unravel was relevant to everyone, young and old."

Positive Parenting with ‘The
Law of Attraction’
The Best Parent I Can Be Lillian Reekie
Since writing ‘Hidden Dangers’, Lillian has written four more books in which she continues to share with Australians and via the internet, the world, about their 19-plus year journey, much of it documented in the media, radio, TV programs like Today Tonight and through seminars around the country and life coaching sessions. Says Lillian of her latest book, ‘The Best Parent I Can Be’, “This is a workbook to be used by parents or teachers and is based on ‘The Law of Attraction’. It gives great tips, ideas and practical activities to empower parents and teachers to attract the most positive family relationships.” She continues: “My aim is to assist parents and teachers with helpful tips and tools to positively attract the types of relationships they desire with children. It is hard, but it isn’t impossible and I am testament to that. It can be incredible. It all depends on our approach and some simple, but effective changes to our parenting.” The accessible format of the ‘Best Parent I Can Be’ is a flip book with digestable chapters and concepts. It also includes exercises and ideas aimed at reprogramming our parenting ideas from negative to positive, which Lillian states it essential, “not only for your sanity, but for your children’s and grandchildren’s futures”. One fun idea is the Cardboard Mailbox, which can be as creative or as simple as your skill set. Decorate a box and attach to your child’s bedroom door. “Imagine their delight when they come home and find their very own mailbox outside their door,” says Lillian. “The idea of the mailbox is for a fun way to leave messages or notes of love and encouragement and positive communication. Even for younger children you can leave nice pictures or simple messages they can manage. By focusing on positive and loving thoughts you give your children, the universe will recognise this and through the Law of Attraction, it will come back to you.” More at www.hiddendangers.com.au

Louise explains, “As a health educator and a mother, one day I was invited to present to my son’s Grade 1 class and demonstrate why they needed to eat more fruit and vegetables, but should avoid junk foods. golden chance for me to break my son’s enchantment with processed foods, alongside all his classmates (students who often brought unhealthy lunches to school which my son coveted)! “Therefore, by employing the same persuasions as the junk food marketers, I went about developing a storyline laced with heroism and morale; one that engaged children to reject junk foods, but motivated them to choose fruits and vegetables. I presented a story with goodies and baddies, a spy and a hero!â€? Fair trade is an alternative approach to trade, particularly international trade that has arisen from grave inequities in the mainstream free trade model. These inequities enable developed countries to continue to progress and prosper while essentially limiting or debilitating the trade opportunities of those most in need of development. Fair trade products such as coffee, tea, and chocolate can be found in major supermarkets, independent retailers, organic and health food stores, office supply companies as well as hundreds of cafes. A number of major coffee chains now have their own Fair trade blends and several airlines serve Fair trade tea and coffee on their flights. naVigatIng thE plaY datE at Seaworld and if somebody whinges, we all go. They all get on and don’t nag us because they know we’re dead serious! If we’re at somebody’s home, another rule is that we all stay on and help clean up at the end.”
Schools hols are a great time to catch up with mates at home, and great for the parents too, as a fun time to socialise and get a word in edgewise while the kids are occupied. One mum to three boys aged 9, 8 and 6, photographer Julie Willis, is adept at co-hosting play dates. She bands together with a bunch of compatible mums, aware of the ground rules and disposed to fun, for “Friday Fiesta” nights.
In her job as photographer, Julie has learnt how to manage kids of all personalities and temperaments. “The key is to divert them. If something’s not going well, grab the water pistols and some buckets of water and let them run around and wet each other!”
“The mums bring food to suit a theme – Indian, Thai, Mexican. We turn a kid’s room in to a disco so they have their area. One rule is no TV, no PS3, no technology, just the ipod for music.”
If kids get feisty, organise a dance-off, take a break for refreshments, what about a Scavenger Hunt? Arm them with brown paper bags and write a list of 8-10 easy items to locate around the backyard or the street if it’s safe enough: feather, round stone, red flower, bottle top, sticker, paddle pop stick, key. Guaranteed to keep them on their toes, competitive, collaborative and ready for a snooze when they get home!
As Julie explains “The kids get to mingle, girls and boys, different ages, and the mums get a chance to catch up and socialise for a few hours. The kids are introduced to different foods they see other kids trying it. It’s great!” Putting away the technology is vital for interaction, as well as ensuring your expensive items don’t get wrecked. “Put away the stuff you don’t want people to touch,” Julie recommends. “Ease up on the sugar. Prepare in advance with balanced food – jelly shots (non-alcoholic of course), fruit platters, chicken skewers and sausages on the BBQ, homemade ice blocks, mini burgers.”
tiPs for A plaY daTe thAt’S toPs! • Let your child choose. Ask who he or she would like to invite. • Keep it small. One at a time is a good start. Even numbers work best. If you cringe at the idea of a gaggle of kids tearing through your house, find a kid-friendly location.
Crucial to a pleasant play date is setting and knowing the ground rules. “All the mums know they’re allowed to sort out any issues if they see somebody doing something. That way, the kids know they’re answerable to all the adults, not just their own mums.”
• Keep it short. A couple of hours are enough Wait until the kids are older and firmer friends before you attempt sleepovers. • Prepare the food. Ask parents about any food allergies and preferences. Get inspired and make healthy fruit or cheese muffins, bite size, fruit skewers, fruit juice ice blocks in advance.
Describing the format, Julie says: “We start early, around 5.30pm, everybody takes turns to host it, sometimes we have them during the day in a park or
• Turn off the TV. Play dates are supposed to help kids develop their social skills. Save the video or computer game for the post-playdate winddown, and plan activities the kids can do together instead. But don’t overdo it! Let them set the tone and wait til the “We’re bored” signals. • “Break time” is a good idea. A quiet-time activity is a good antidote to hectic play. Have some craft on hand, or suggest they bake their own biscuits. • Lay down the house rules. Instead of chasing them round telling them the “don’ts”, lay down the offlimits areas or any special precautions from the start. • Leave them to it. Let kids resolve their own conflicts, but if it escalates, time to step in. Remind both parties that words and actions that hurt are not acceptable. Introduce a new activity. • Saying Goodbye. As the end of the play date approaches, let them know it’s almost time to wrap things up. Congratulate them on playing so well together and run through the things they may have enjoyed doing, and some ideas for other things that they could look forward to doing next time. • Take home a memory. If they did craft, paintings or baked some biccies, pack them up to take home as a memento.

He said: ‘I want the lot’. I remember him tapping the paperwork and saying ‘I trust you, Adrian’. He wanted security for his family.” Adrian’s client was a project manager with a Council, aged 47, with a wife and two daughters aged nine and five at the time. teNnis iS acE teNnis blUe seRves Up grEat hOlidaY fun and FitnesS Idyllically located in the grounds of Hope Island Resort, the Tennis Blue International Training Academy has programs suited to all ages, skills and backgrounds, no matter your proficiency. “This provides an environment where players can develop their game from an early age right through to a career as a full-time professional player,” explains Director, head coach and owner, Glenn Hamilton. The Academy Director and Head Coach Glenn Hamilton, has been twice recognised as Queensland Coach of the Year and is currently Queensland’s Coaches Representative to Tennis Australia. Glenn honed his coaching career in France and is renowned for his strong work ethic, discipline and passion for the game. Glenn has also gathered a professional, competent team of coaching staff to provide the best coaching to all Academy players. The prestigious training Academy serves up programs that can turn fledgling players into tennis aces! For the younger players, there’s Tennis Australia’s MLC Hot Shots program, which is a fun way for children to learn how to play tennis. “Smaller courts, nets, rackets and low compression balls makes learning easy and gives younger players aged three to 12 years old the chance to serve, rally and score right from the first time they play,” says Glenn. The Junior program caters perfectly for a range of ages and learning abilities, by dividing children into levels that introduces the game of tennis, develops their skills and movement, refines technique and introduces play strategy. “Tennis is a fabulous sport that uses nearly every muscle in the body,” Glenn says. “For children, it develops hand-eye co-ordination and gross motor skills, as well as balance, fitness and spatial awareness. Tennis is also a life-long sport. There are plenty of tennis veterans still playing regularly well into their 60s, 70s and even 80s!” Over the school holidays, Tennis Blue International Training Academy has Holiday Super Sports Camps, ideal for children aged five to 12 and just the ticket for an antidote to sedentary screen time! “With technology driving inactive leisure-time activities for children, it’s hard to come up with active options that are also engaging and fun. Tennis Blue International Training Academy can offer the perfect solution to this dilemma.”

Mamas that
Rock!
Nikkie O’Connor and Sonya Perks have been friends since meeting at a newborn baby clinic in March 2008. Their relationship grew quickly over babies, but their real bond was forged when Sonya’s solution to Nikkie’s post natal depression was to get away from the kids and chill out under the water. Both mums have three kids ranging from 1yr to 17 and help manage and run their family businesses ‘Mag-It Wheels’ and ‘Mark Perks Woodworks’.
buSiness Tell us about your business / current role? The mutual love of Scuba Diving and our kids, lead to the idea and now the development of SCUBA MUMS – GOLD COAST Facebook page. Scuba mums is not just for mums! It’s for anyone in the community who wants to support women (particularly mums) in diving. It is a ‘family friendly’ group that wants to include all the family, but also encourages some ‘girls only’ time with like-minded women. We want to encourage and support women to get back into diving after kids because as we all know “under the sea is a relaxing place to be!”
If you have 10 minutes to yourself – what do you do? Sonya – Sometimes it is just nice to sit in silence and read a book . . . doesn’t happen often though. Nikkie – Check out ‘what comes next’ in my calendar and prepare for it.
Kids What do you do for childcare? Sonya – Sunkids childcare, primary school and high school. Nikkie – Sunkids childcare.
Do your kids do many extra curricular activities? Sonya – As well as school activities (Wakakiri and Eisteddfods) combined they do swimming, speech and drama, acting, guitar, soccer and my eldest is nearly has all her driving hours up to get her license (scary) and works part time. So lots of running around!
Our motto is “if you can’t be a scuba mum, be a scuba mum supporter!”
Nikkie – Swimming and yoga, at the moment and l am looking into dancing for Kyra, but it is hard to manage certain activities considering the other two are still so little.
Ages of kids?
What do you do for fun with the kids?
Sonya – Jess 17, Millie 12 and Mason 4.
Sonya – Try and get in lots of family time when we can. We love playing board games, and movie nights together, also BBQs with friends and the beach.
Nikkie – Kyra 4, Kody 2 ½ and Jayde 1.
What time does a typical day start for you? Sonya – 5:30am, put out the puppy and try to wake up teenagers then all action stations! Nikkie – 5am, Give the baby a bottle and change her nappy, then empty the dishwasher and put on a load of clothes washing.
Do you have help around the house? Sonya – No, we don’t have any family living near us. Nikkie – No, but l get the lawns mowed by ‘Pink Ladies Lawn Mowing’.
Nikkie – Boating, parks, beach and we live in the best cul-de-sac on the Gold Coast, so we hang out with the neighbours and their kids a lot. It’s a great little community we have.
fun What is your favourite thing to do for date night with your partner? Sonya – We are trying to get better at making time for date nights because we always have somewhere to take kids, but usually the movies or grab a coffee from Zarraffas and sit and chat uninterrupted.
Who does the cooking and cleaning at your house?
Nikkie – Dinner with a nice view, and a couple of drinks.
Sonya – Me, and sometimes my husband Mark.
What is your favourite Gold Coast place to hang with the family?
Nikkie – Me, but in the summer my husband Mick cooks a mean BBQ!
Sonya – Any of the parks and beaches, especially at Broadbeach and Burleigh,

Mamas that rock but also we love to go up to Natural Arch Springbrook.
Fantasy Husband…that celebrity dream man?
Nikkie – At the moment we like hoping on our boat and cruising down the river to the Broadwater parklands playground (opposite Australia Fair) with a picnic lunch.
Sonya – There are lots of yummy celebrities out there (Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt – and the list goes on…) but not sure how good a husband they would make.
How about favourite place to eat out as a family?
Nikkie – Christian Grey. Yum!
Sonya – Anywhere that has good food AND a play area for Mason.
Tips
Nikkie – It’s a bit of a mission impossible with three kids under four, especially as Jayde likes to get down for bed at about 6.30pm.
Must have parenting tip or tool? Sonya – Make time for each of the kids by themselves once a week.
Girl sTuFf
Nikkie – As busy as life is, we regularly come together as a family unit and focus on the simple things… Us!
Where do you head to when you get time for a girls night out?
Can you share any tips on the finding the right balance and that juggling act?
Sonya – Howl at the Moon in Broadbeach. Always a great night!
Nikkie – Syncing mine and my husband’s iPhone and iPad calendars is a great help, and also preparing the dinner the night before.
Nikkie – My patio. I have a great Hinterland view and it can accommodate all my girlfriends and the drinks are cheap.
What is your best beauty tip for mums? Sonya – For in the water l use Moroccan Oil for my hair. That sorts out the tangles and protects it. And 30+ sunscreen!
Sonya – Definitely syncing calendars with Mark on iphones and the computer to keep on top of all of our work, home and kids commitments, and also just taking time out to chat.
How do you stay motivated?
Nikkie – Definitely Moroccan Oil for when we are in the water a lot and the 30+ sunscreen, and l am also LOVING the Priori skincare range from Pure Indulgence.
Sonya – The thought of a dive at the end of a busy week where no one can contact you underwater. I love being underwater with the fish and the turtles and the sharks, what an amazing place to relax – 18m below the surface.
Favourite place to shop?
Nikkie – I stay motivated by planning some fantastic things – normally a dive with Scuba Mums – Gold Coast or a great family day out. I need something to look forward to after the monotony of clean, feed, work, every day routine.
Sonya – Robina Town Centre Nikkie – Online!
You can ‘like’ Scuba Mums on facebook and join them for a dive!

Menopause 2012 Facts and Fallacies Only a few hundred years ago most women didn’t live long enough to reach the menopause. It is only in modern times when life expectancies are now well into the eighties we find ourselves dealing with more than 30 years of life with little or no hormones from the ovaries and the implication this has for the way the body functions. Menopause occurs when women run out of eggs in their ovaries and menstrual cycles cease. Women can experience hot flushes, vaginal dryness, poor sleep, reduced libido and clarity of thought – all of which can impact on quality of life. Symptoms of an approaching menopause such as menstrual irregularity and lesser degrees of the symptoms mentioned can start up to six years before periods cease completely. The average age of menopause in Australia is 51.7 years with a range of 40-60. Under 40 it is termed premature menopause and has particular health implications. Family history may give some guide as to the likely age for any particular woman but there is no reliable predictive test. Cigarette smoking is associated with an earlier menopause as is lower body weight. We are currently gaining experience with a blood test called AMH (Anti Mullerian Hormone), which may help to predict early menopause in some women but for most it will occur when nature intended. Approximately 20% of women have few or no symptoms whereas 20% will have severe and
prolonged symptoms with some lasting more than 10 years. The remaining 60% will have variable severity and duration. Thus, the number who seek remedies and the types sought will vary. Some will attend their GP, specialist or friends, some naturopaths and alternative health practitioners, some will suffer in silence and in this day and age many will seek answers from the internet AKA “Dr Google”. When it comes to considering HRT, consideration is given to the type and severity of symptoms and the issue of prevention of future problems such as osteoporosis, hip and spine fractures. This must be balanced against the risk of clots in the legs or lungs (DVT, PE) and the slight increased risk of breast cancer after five years treatment with some formulations. In some women, hormone replacement will be contraindicated due to breast cancer or clotting disorders. Estrogen by tablets, patches, gels or Implants is well established as the most effective treatment for estrogen deficiency symptoms. Various chemical formulations are available. If a woman still has her uterus (hasn’t had a hysterectomy) she requires progesterone also to balance the effect of estrogen and prevent uterine cancer. Some formulations have the two hormones combined or may have dual effects. If symptoms are predominantly vaginal (dryness, pain with sex) vaginal estrogen creams or pessaries may be the best option and these have little systemic
absorption and hence few side effects. Formulations based on plant estrogens (phytoestrogens) and herbs such as Black Cohosh are available without prescription and may be effective for mild symptoms as the effect is relatively weak. Some women may notice improvements in libido with androgen replacement (Testosterone, DHEA) however libido is a complex issue with effects vary variable. Alternative types of estrogens, progesterones and androgens may be formulated as “troches” by compounding pharmacists with the same or similar hormones to pharmaceutical brands. Bioidentical hormones (chemically equivalent to the ovaries natural output) have also found favour with many naturopathic practitioners. Ultimately it is important to remember that any formulation that has hormonal activity may have positive and negative effects and these must be monitored for safety and efficacy. At the end of the day each woman assessing the impact of menopause and the place and relevance of HRT to herself needs an individual assessment and a balanced discussion of the pros and cons to make an informed choice within the framework of her own symptom and risk profile. Regular review is also important as new information becomes available. More at www.drgaryswift.com.au

They are the same size as baseball trading cards, 63 x 89mm (so they fit into the little plastic pouches) and are intended to be swapped or traded. They are huge internationally with Australia not catching on just yet so how about we start a new craze right here on the Gold Coast!

Personally, I have never participated in any of this although I have known about it for years. I found a pack of blank ATCs in a craft shop recently and decided that this is what I wanted to base my summer kids art project around. Because of their tiny size, you can be very flexible about what goes on them and it really doesn’t matter what age group does this project either. The rules are simple. The cards can be any type of paper or board, they just must be 64x89mm. They are intended to be swapped and traded, never sold.
