Tough Talk Words: Dana Strong

7 Tips for Talking to Kids about Tough Issues Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. Pornography. Violence. Death. Divorce. Terrorism. Our children are growing up in a complex world. Issues which used to be taboo to discuss with children are now hitting them from every angle through television and the internet. If you aren’t talking to your kids about the tough issues, you can pretty much be sure they are hearing about them somewhere else.

Disturbing issues can be hard for children to understand - and difficult for parents to explain. You’re not alone if you don’t tackle the tricky subjects because you’re afraid of not getting the ‘right’ messages across or not saying the ‘right’ things. Lots of parents are so worried about getting it ‘right’ that they end up saying nothing at all. Other parents question the appropriateness of bringing up ‘adult’ topics with children. In today’s world, though, our kids are hearing about these issues whether we are talking about them or not – from television, movies, social media, websites, magazines and school friends. The time to talk to your kids about sensitive issues is NOW! If you don’t talk with them early and often, you’ll miss the chance not only to provide them with accurate information, but also to instil your personal values and moral principles. Here are some tips to help you tackle the tough topics:

1. Start early According to medical research and public health data, when young children want information, advice and guidance, they turn to their parents first. Once they reach the teenage years, they depend more on friends, the media and other outside sources of information.

2. Ask questions Grab opportunities to initiate talks about tough topics whenever you can. If the news reports a kidnapping, ask your children how they feel about it. Ask them what they would do if that happened to them. Try asking them outright if they have ever been offered drugs. Ask how they responded or how they might respond if/when they are offered.

Just a couple of questions can open up an entire conversation.

3. Don’t be shy Many parents have a particularly hard time talking to their children about topics like sex. Try to overcome your uneasiness, because the results will be worth it: research shows that children whose parents talk with them about sexuality are more likely to start sex later and are less likely to have an unplanned pregnancy or to get a sexually transmitted infection. (source: http://www.public. health.wa.gov.au). A fantastic resource to help you is ‘A Guide for Parents Talking to Their Kids About Sex’ available at www.public.health.wa.gov.au.

4. Communicate your values Think about what’s important to you. Consider what values you want to pass on to your children. Go past ‘just-the-facts’ explanations and use talkingabout-the-tough-stuff opportunities to convey your moral philosophies and beliefs. Children want, and need, moral guidance from their parents.

5. Listen If, in the middle of a tough topic conversation, your child suddenly says, “I want to go out and play”, respect that. Stop talking, and maybe reintroduce the topic again another time. If your child asks you a tricky question, like ‘what is crack?’, ask him what he thinks it is and listen closely to find out what he already knows. Listening carefully not only builds children’s self esteem by letting them know their views and opinions are important, it also helps you understand what they really want to know and what they already understand.

6. Be honest Children deserve honest answers and explanations. It’s what builds their ability to trust. It also prevents them from making up their own fantasy explanations, which can be more frightening than any real, honest response we can offer. You don’t have to share all the details of particular situations or issues, but try not to leave any big gaps. Feel free to honestly say “I don’t know” - and then tell them you will find out and let them know, or perhaps suggest you find the answer together. Feel free to honestly say “this isn’t a good time to talk about that” – and then suggest a time that would be good, and make sure you come back to it!

7. Talk and talk and talk again Younger children usually only take in small amounts of information at any one time; teenagers often tune out their parents during long, formal discussions. Instead of infrequent big talks about tough issues with your kids, look for frequent ‘real life’ talking opportunities. Use a newspaper article about a child expelled from school for bullying to discuss school life, friendship and bullying. If you watch a television show with your child that includes a plot about teen pregnancy, ask your child afterwards what she thought of the program and if she agreed with how the teenagers behaved. Open up conversations about news topics after you’ve watched the news together. Be patient and ready to talk about a topic again and again if your child asks the same questions over and over - it’s just your child‘s way of trying to absorb and understand what he really wants to know.

e g n a h C Sea One in four Gold Coast residents is born overseas. Here, Bree Eve shares her family’s story of migration, the challenges of making a new home on the other side of the world, and the transformations she is hoping their sea change will bring.

Keeping Score

stuff, even though I am not sure what... The sunshine must contain optimism.

We have been here for six months; it’s time to look at the score card and see how we’re doing.

I think Woody feels it too. These days his smile seems to be wider and his laugh bursts out from his heart. He has always been a happy child, but now he seems to have a constant joyousness about him.

At a glance, it’s not looking good. My husband has not found work and is freelancing through the night for foreign companies. We have all had moments of homesickness: babies being born and countless birthdays. And more everyday things like; missing a gin and tonic and a heartfelt chat with a friend. International flights are not cheap; popping back to London for gin and tonics is not going to be happening any time soon! Woody’s 4th birthday is coming up and he’s very excited about his party. He is expecting his old friends and beloved cousins from the UK to be there, despite my telling him otherwise. I fear on the day he will still be a bit disappointed. In moments of doubt, the score sheet is not looking too great and it’s easy to feel melancholy. So I need to remind myself of a few things... Firstly, it’s almost winter and my UK winter clothes remain in storage (and I am hoping that’s where they will stay!). I just cannot believe how jaw-droppingly beautiful the weather is every single day. I know it will get colder but I suspect my own smugness will keep me warm. I have noticed that I am standing taller and more confidently in the sunshine here on the coast. As does Woody. We are like a pair of sunflowers with our smiling faces to the sun. This sunshine also makes me feel lucky. I feel lucky to live on the coast, but also lucky to be alive and healthy. The sunshine is also making me feel inspired. I feel like I am going to do great

Since moving here, I’ve been fortunate enough to be a stay at home mum. I spend more time with Woody than I have in his entire life. I have realised I’m more patient than I thought and less stressed about being late and getting everything done. We stay longer at the park than we intended and often go home via the beach, just because we are having fun. Woody seems to be learning so much in this less stressed lifestyle. He can help with the cooking and the housework because I am not on a deadline. We have time to stop at all the signs when we are out, looking for the letters in his name, because we are in less of a rush. We also have time to go off on tangents. If we read a good book we suddenly find ourselves making puppet characters, or costumes, or special shaped biscuits or building things from the book. We have time to bring the book to life. And then, as I am writing this, I have a complete moment of clarity and somehow, it does not matter that the score card says we have not found work or that we get a bit homesick. Little by little I am starting to become the Mum I have always wanted to be, but have never had the time to be. Suddenly, nothing else matters.

Bree

I now call Australia Home!

Kate Lett, Mum to Riley (18 months) and Married to Jason, Owner /Operator Mad About Campers. Lived on the Gold Coast for six months What made you decide to move to the Gold Coast? I’d been working long hours in Boston when I returned to work when Riley was three months old. I would leave the house at 7.30am and not get home until 7.30pm. I also travelled away a lot. My husband would drop Riley off at day care and pick her up. I would hardly get to see her during the week. I knew it was never going to work for me. How could I do that and be a mum too?

What were you hoping to gain from moving to Australia? I was hoping the move would get us to slow down and enjoy life a bit more. Give us more time to spend together as a family, more time to spend outdoors and more time doing what we love.

What did you have to do before you could move? We had told my husband’s parents we were thinking of moving but we had not told my parents or my employer. So, everything was done in secret from them. I was a stress ball for months! So we told my parent’s we’re moving in May and in August we put the house on the market. In October we accepted an offer and the people wanted to close by the end of November. We had one month to get everything packed up or sold! At that point we couldn’t sell our cars until we were done working. Everything had to happen in a certain order so it was just chaos!

How did you feel when you first arrived in Australia? When we got here it was just like we were on vacation. We weren’t working; we didn’t know what we were doing. Jason’s parents live right on the Burleigh beachfront so we spent a lot of time there just relaxing. It was such an exciting time, such a great feeling to start over. Once we were settled in our own place, it hits you all of a sudden, ‘okay, this is our life now’. The place that I have called home for the past 30 years is no longer my home. Our friends and family who were such a big part of our life are not here, it’s just us.

And how does the reality compare to your expectation? So far, Australia has really lived up to our expectations. Owning our own business has been really great and has provided us with the lifestyle we were hoping for. We love spending time at the beach or the park, walking around town, or just playing around the yard with Riley and our dog. I can drop Riley off at childcare and pick her up early to spend time together as a family. I can exercise in the morning. I can cook dinner at night. It is just what we had hoped it would be.

Life skills

Where we are today is a result of our choices Words: Debbie Hogg Why then, do we sometimes have a horrible feeling of being stuck? It could be generated from being in the middle of an unhappy or undesirable life situation which leads us to feeling like we don’t have any choice at all. Or, for other reasons we feel trapped and pushed into the corner or imprisoned in our unhappy bodies or lives. Then one day we wake up and realise we’ve been living a life that isn’t authentic. We’re not happy. We keep doing what we think we should be doing to get by, we live our life based on what other people think we should be doing; yet we still have that feeling of being lost, empty and sometimes depressed. Limiting beliefs sneak in and convince us that we don’t have the ability to choose differently, for example we feel unhappy but we say to ourselves “My family has big expectations for me, I should fulfil those expectations whether I like it or not” or, “I’ve studied hard for this job, I can’t possibly leave it” or, “I’m overweight and I cannot do anything about it!”. When our mindset is negative and we feel low about our circumstances we think we do not have a choice and this is exactly what we attract. When we focus on lack, the universe provides exactly that, so on we march being unhappy, feeling unable to change things which leaves us feeling frustrated, out of control, breathless and de-energised? It’s a horrible feeling to hold inside.

Life is about choice not chance!

“We were all born with the gift of free will and we have the right to choose our destiny in a series of lifelong decisions.” Bo Bennett

We as human beings attract what we put out, we are unable to change what is, however we can change what will be. The first step to lift out of any unhappy place is to choose to do something different, because, “If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got”. Activating ‘Will’ is the next step. Will is the key to our own freedom and personal power. Will is the ability to deliberately choose a specific course of action. Will involves our creative spark of independence and self-determination. Will is our persistent, focused purposefulness, conviction and resolve to live a life of our dreams away from the ‘should’s,’ feeling trapped and working with the have to’s and must do’s. Will is our power of choice. Our lives are filled with infinite and amazing choices. Opportunities and possibilities are all around us and we can choose the right actions to support our passions and dreams. It is important to know that we have the ability to choose freely about what we no

longer want to experience or have in our life. Having a good clear picture in our mind of what we want supports these new choices and putting them in place. Making changes can often be challenging because we are moving out of our comfort zone therefore getting support from a partner, colleague, coach or friend/s is important.

A couple of steps to easily move forward: when dealing with the negative self-talk, reframe it to a positive and check-in with our core belief system. This allows us to recognise we do have the ability to choose who we are and how we react to all situations; it’s the roadmap to our success in life. Our choice can be to take control of our lives and create the best possible life right now. Knowing that every little choice we make from today is about making our lives a little happier, little slower in pace, little more connected with self/family or friends, is within our power. We can choose to take small action steps or massive ones; it’s up to us. It’s a choice. Take control, be aware and embrace your life.

Kirsty Sanderson Photography

Sharing this story with your children will support the power of their choices. An old Cherokee was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said, “A battle is raging inside me, it is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The old man looked at the children with a firm stare. “This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too.” They thought about it for a minute, and then one child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee replied: “The one you feed.”

Life happens through us not to us be aware of the power within you!

Kids take all the fun out of shopping!

Words: Jeni Bone

A new Mobile Mom study from US BabyCenter shows moms feel stressed and rushed when shopping -- and thus make a lot of mobile and online purchases. There are many changes that come with motherhood. But for many moms, one significant change is that having kids – especially kids who have to tag along – seems to take all the fun out of shopping. Before they have kids, women described shopping as “relaxed,” “impulsive,” and “social.” Being out with their friends is fun. That all changes when their shopping companion no longer pushes a cart, but rides in one. The US “moms” surveyed said they now find shopping “rushed” (258 index compared to general population), “stressful” (188 index), and “overwhelming” (167 index), according new data from the American Mom Report from BabyCenter and ComScore, published in early November by AdAge.com. It’s no wonder, then, that they do so much shopping online and using mobile -- even while in retail stores. Forty percent have shopped using a mobile browser in the past 30 days, according to the survey. They’re all for anything they can do to save time/effort in the shopping process --- including new tools and new online support communities. Moms were more than three times as likely to text a picture of a product before purchasing it. Moms view shopping as competitive in terms of saving and are much more likely to scan a bar code or QR code to save money -- even for savings under $5. For retailers, e-tailers and brands, one thing is certain, mothers tend to be on the leading edge of shopping trends. So even if this isn’t your market specifically, you might want to pay attention to their behaviours to secure them as customers.

Health & Wellbeing

Chill factor Words: Fe Taylor

Now I admit I am not a winter person. I love the long hot summer days that we are blessed with here on the coast. The truth is that our “winter”, whilst a rude shock from the hot afternoons playing on the beach, are not really that bad. Sure, it’s cold, but it is very mild compared to a winter’s day in some of our southern and western parts of the country.

The biggest struggle for me is not getting out of bed in the cooler mornings, but more so trying to fit in all my roles between the shortened daylight hours. This adds a little more stress to the winter day. Sure there are the same number of hours in the winter day as there is in summer, but I find myself trying to get home before dark, have a warming nutritious dinner on the table before it gets too cold, have the hot showers completed and everyone rugged up before the temperature drops. At my house I really notice the increase in activity indoors after school as the kids are in the house more instead of outdoors playing. During summer we are out and about early and inside late. During winter we hibernate more and get under each other’s feet. The added pressure of winter can take its toll. I was interested to discover that during winter in the northern hemisphere they actually experience something called SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is a kind of depression that brings with it a loss of energy, anxiousness, wanting to sleep more, and sometimes wanting to withdraw socially.

Health & Wellbeing So, is it fair to say that winter is more stressful? It is certainly a time when illness tends to increase with more runny noses, colds and coughs, and the dreaded flu. Cooler temps will bring more asthma attacks, respiratory issues and increased cases of pneumonia. Sick kids and feeling under the weather ourselves will also add to our stress as we may also experience time lost at work. Winter can also be a time when we tend to turn to the comfort foods such as giant mugs of hot chocolate, and warm winter stews and soups. Winter foods coupled with an increase in sedentary lifestyles, including the “sleep in” and the “couch-potato-with-ugg boots-syndrome” can lead us into weight gain and sluggish behaviour. So, how do we break the winter cycle, avoid the 5kg gain and stay healthy calm and vital during these coming weeks of winter?

Here are my Five top picks!

1.

All the Gold Coast’s best products, services, resources, advice and education to help you raise happy and healthy kids, brought together for you in one FREE, fun-filled day out for all the family!

2.

sUnDAY 29 JULY 10am -3pm

Watch the diet! This is not a time to avoid vital nutrients and vitamins. We need to keep the colds at bay so ensure you are maintaining sufficient fruit and veggies – juices and supplements. Avoid overeating and keep an eye on your portions. Take some time to RELAX! Even if it is only 10 minutes each day. Read, stretch, yoga, Pilates, meditate, this is a truly personal choice. Deep breathing techniques are a great way to energise the body in the morning, and take a few minutes when you hit the hay to relax your body – or perhaps use a meditation app or download to help you unwind from your day.

3.

Get some D. Reduced daylight hours means fewer opportunities to grab some rays! Vitamin D deficiencies therefore generally increase in winter. Not only will the sunlight warm us up but will assist in protecting us by maintaining our Vitamin D levels. Low vitamin D levels have been linked to Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, dementia, heart attacks and osteoporosis. A number of studies have shown that people who are low in Vitamin D are more likely to suffer heart attacks or strokes.

4.

Keep up the cardio. Too cold for a morning walk or run? Then download some exercise videos from YouTube or borrow some from the library. Now is not the time to reduce your exercise! Fitness is a great deterrent to illness. Add in some strength work too. As we age we suffer from reduced muscle mass. Muscle mass assists us in fat burning and also in assisting to generate heat for our bodies. Exercise will assist in generating body heat and also improve circulation.

5.

Ugg boots, scarves, coats and woolly socks! We may be in the Sunshine State, and of course being a tourist destination we have many visitors wondering around in boardies and a singlet during winter. But there is no shame in donning a scarf and coat. Keeping warm will also support good health and keep those winter nasties at bay! Invest in your health this winter, chill out, not get a chill and save dollars in medical bills!

Super Savvy Words:Jeni Bone

Best-selling author, mum and live-wire business woman and inspiration to thousands, Rachael Bermingham, has released her 8th new title, “Savvy”, which she hopes will jumpstart people’s belief in themselves and help them convert their dreams into business, and life, success.

Rachael, who with her book and series “4 Ingredients” helped stimulate growth in the stagnating cook book market is no stranger to seizing an idea, taking the action steps to fulfil it, with huge amounts of hard work and commitment, to eventually ride the wave of success. Being mum to three young children (including toddler twins) was never going to stop business dynamo Rachael Bermingham from achieving her dreams. In fact “Savvy” tells the story of exactly how she managed to defeat the odds and still come out smiling! Without even making it past year 10 at High School, this super-mum has proven just how far hard work and optimism can get you. An average student at school, Rachael had the drive to start her own hairdressing business at the age of 19. Stretching her wings, she then went on to sell insurance and security, became a stunt woman, a shark diver and feeder, and a travel consultant.

Rachael’s brilliance comes from her never ending enthusiasm for life, determination and enough exuberance to ignite a room.

In Savvy, Rachael shares key tips on: • Getting organised and time management • Setting and achieving goals • The A-B-Cs of marketing any business to make it a success • What to do when things don’t go to plan • Juggling family with business

“If you do your very best every day, and can honestly lay your head on the pillow each night and be proud of how you went about it, then there is no right way, and there is no wrong way, there is just your way.” With her wealth of experience, if there’s anyone who knows how to start a business from scratch, it’s Rachael. Rachael co-wrote and self-published her first book, “Read My Lips” in 2005. She subsequently used her writing experience and marketing talent to cowrite the phenomenally successful “4 Ingredients” cookbook series. In her 20 years in business she has become renowned for her natural flair in building multi-million dollar companies from a home base around family commitments. She does this with clever cost effective marketing and business tactics coupled with diligent time management and goal setting strategies. Her passion for helping others to succeed and transform their goal into achievements has recently evolved in the form of her own Publishing & Distribution House (Bermingham Books), speaking and mentoring business people in six different countries.

Chocs & Pops

But “Savvy” is not just for the business or careeroriented, says Rachael. “Any woman (or man) can benefit from ‘Savvy’ as it is about setting your goals, putting the plans in place, with time management (so you can juggle all of the things you want to achieve while doing all of the necessary things like taking the kids to swimming, soccer, ballet), motivation, and also listening to your intuition! “If you do your very best every day, and can honestly lay your head on the pillow each night and be proud of how you went about it, then there is no right way, and there is no wrong way, there is just your way.” Her principles extend to everyday life, empowering us to achieve whatever goals we set our hearts and minds on.” If that is as simple as having the courage and permission to love yourself… and change that one aspect of your life! The on-flow from that achievement is amazing. If it is about getting clarity when all things are appearing ‘blurry’, or developing and listening to your intuition effects every decision you make in the day. Imagine being able to listen to your intuition so that the decisions you make are the correct decisions for you and your goals? And that minimises the distractions and movements off your path.” While success is sometimes defined by reaching the pinnacle of a profession, or “having it all”, Rachael believes it can be approached differently. “Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be. Success means different things to different people. Success is about personal fulfilment, feeling you have a purpose, even if that is to just ‘be’. it is about living to your highest potential, whatever that may be. But it is also easy to listen and compare to what everyone else is doing. You need to have the courage to see the differences and accept your goal as your goal and then celebrate your success as your success!”

Chemicals in environment harmful to male fertility Words: Jeni Bone

news, info, tips, gadgets and much more. A new study has found new evidence that suggests chemicals routinely found in the environment could be damaging fertility in some men. Universities, with assistance from the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), and published in the International Journal of Andrology. Researchers worked with sheep exposed to chemicals such as cosmetics, detergents and pollutants. They found “abnormalities that could result in low sperm counts in 42% of the animals”. Some of the man-made chemicals can interfere with communication systems within the body and potentially have adverse effects on health and wellbeing.

It has been suggested that some may also be responsible for lowering male sperm count and could possibly explain the rise in demand for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in humans. Dr Michelle Bellingham, from Glasgow University said: “We were very surprised to find abnormalities that could result in low sperm counts in the testicles in 42% of the animals.” Prof Paul Fowler, from Aberdeen University, added: “The key now is to work out why these everyday chemicals affect some individuals more than others.”

The Good, The Bad & The Laundry

Words: Jeni Bone

Motherhood The Musical comes to the Gold Coast Mums of all ages are in for an absolute treat with the feel-good production Motherhood The Musical, coming to The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 July. Critics and audiences alike have hailed Motherhood The Musical as an hilarious, musical exposé of the lives of four mums which wends its way on a joyous musical journey taking in the blessings and the perils of being a Mum. There’s a character for everyone who is a Mum, is related to one or knows one! There’s Barb, an overworked, underpaid, stressed-out mother of five; Brooke, the lawyer, who works too much and barely sees her kids, Trisha, a single mum struggling to balance work, her family and her divorce and finally Amy, the naive young woman about to have her first child. As the three friends throw Amy a baby shower, the truth about motherhood (the good, the bad and the ugly) all comes out into the open: the nappies, the dirty laundry, the lazy husbands, juggling the demands of children, a career and everything in between. Written by the award-winning singer/songwriter Sue Fabisch, and brought to you by the Australian Producer of the smash hit Menopause The Musical®, Motherhood The Musical has received rave reviews during its Australian tour. Sophie Carter, who plays “Trisha” in the production finds it refreshing to play a character she feels comfortable portraying.

24 | Coast Kids GC

“As a mum myself, it’s not a stretch for me to get in to Trisha’s shoes. While she goes through a lot of challenges I haven’t experienced, and she tends to be the bitter, cynical one of the group, I can relate to the subject matter and the topics. I love her wry humour.” Juggling her own commitments of family and career, Sophie says daughter Lily and mum, Sue often accompany her on tour. “Sometimes there are three generations of women travelling, other times I leave Lily at home with my partner for shorter trips. Balance is important. While the bonds of motherhood are intense and palpable, and of course, you have to be practical – our children’s needs come first – I believe as mums, we have to be happy too and give ourselves permission to follow our dreams.” Sophie says women, men and people without kids will laugh as heartily and feel as deeply about the characters as mums do. “The writers have really done their research. The issues are not exaggerated. There’s a good mix of humour – about constant cleaning and being coated in yoghurt – then there are the touching moments and poignant songs that reach everybody. It reminds us that life with kids is amazing. In the end, we all realise motherhood may be about sacrifices and your life – and your body – will never be the same again, but it’s who we are and we wouldn’t trade it for the world.” Grab your girlfriends, your mums and their mums

Behaviour Q

Q&A

. Our daughter comes home from school

using bad language and is starting to show some attitude in her tween years. We do not use swear words at home and she says it’s what all her friends do. How can we keep her on the right path?

A

. Firstly it is important to remember “we cannot control another person’s behaviour”. Our limitations are restricted to “teaching”. That is, we can teach people what behaviours will lead to what outcomes in life and we can teach what behaviours are likely to receive positive or negative interpretations from other people. Although it would be desirable to ensure your “tween” daughter refrains from language of this nature outside the home setting, it really is beyond your control. However you are able to teach her: 1. How her behaviours (comments and words used) will be interpreted by ALL other people. That is, highlight how when her comments are heard by students, teachers, strangers, any other person, what the likely interpretations would be from each of those people. It will be important to highlight ALL possible variations of interpretations from different people. For example, your friends might say they think you are “cool” but your teachers may lose respect for you when she hears these comments. Once you have taught all the likely interpretations of her word use, then it is up to your daughter to take responsibility for her behaviour choices and outcomes she receives.

Behaviour

Words: Tan Curtis

Statements you could use: “You chose those words so therefore you chose that that person is likely to have a negative interpretation of your choices.” Or “You chose those words so therefore you chose that that person is likely to have a positive interpretation of your choices.” You can also teach: 2. Clear expectations of what will and will not be accepted in the home setting. For example stating “I can’t control what language you use outside of the home but in the home setting if you: • Use undesired language there will be negative outcomes • Use desired language there will be positive outcomes Two points that are further worth considering: 1. As parent we often place our judgment of how good we play the “parent role” based on our child’s behaviour choices. Therefore we want our children’s behaviour to be of a certain standard to make us feel like “good parents”. If such a thing as a “good parent” exists, it is teaching our child to be them and encouraging them to feel comfortable with who they are so that they don’t feel the need to buckle to outside pressures. Providing the opportunity for your child to develop as “them” and not what they “should be” is “supportive parenting”. If a child is buckling to outside pressures ... such

as swearing because all my friends are ... the true supportive parenting is looking at “what’s going on for your daughter that is leading her to look for outside acceptance from her peers and therefore not accepting herself for who she is.” 2. When a person needs to look outside for acceptance, then the acceptance they have of themself is low. That is, if your tween daughter is relying on approval from her friends to feel accepted than she is not accepting herself for who she is... the real question here is “How is she feeling about herself?”

Midwife Matters

A New Option in Maternity Care Pregnancy, birthing and early parenthood are all amazing life experiences. In Australia we are privileged to give birth in one of the safest places in the world. The most recent national review of maternity services confirmed women want safe, high quality and accessible maternity care based on informed choice. There are many options of care available for pregnant women and their families. Currently, women have the options of ‘Share Caring’ with her General Practitioner (GP), Public Hospital Care, Birth Centre Care or pregnancy care through their chosen Private Obstetrician. A women’s choice of maternity care is solely dependent on her choice and should be supported and respected at all times. In 2010, the Australian Government announced reforms to improve our current maternity services. These reforms highlighted the important role midwives play in the birthing experience. Since November 2010 Eligible Privately Practicing (EPP) Midwives, in collaboration with a Doctor, have been able to offer the women and families of Australia another option of maternity care. An Eligible Private Practice Midwife has met strict national requirements and is very experienced in pregnancy, birth and postnatal care. Families may choose to have an EPP midwife for the entire pregnancy journey. This is known as continuity of midwifery care. Alternately, they may choose only one or two visits, such as after the birth to assist in the establishment of breastfeeding. When using the services of an EPP Midwife, women are able to claim a Medicare rebate. If the midwife has admitting rights to the women’s chosen hospital, then fees for labour and birth care also have a Medicare rebate. Labour

and birth care in the home unfortunately does not attract a Medicare rebate.

emotionally ready and armed with the knowledge required for labour, birth, and early parenting.

Midwifery continuity of care models are definitely not new to Australia but unfortunately are not a well-known service. Such models however, are very common and popular overseas. Midwifery continuity of care models have been linked to improved birth and satisfaction outcomes and increased breastfeeding rates.

When labour starts, your EPP Midwife will be with you, supporting you at home and the hospital. Because you have already established a relationship with your midwife, your anxiety levels are kept low, which can increase your chances of your labour and birth progressing well.

Unfortunately only a limited number of women on the Gold Coast each year have access to this publically funded model of care through the Gold Coast Birth Centre. Women with more complicated pregnancies can benefit from continuity of midwifery care. EPP midwives will refer to and work with your Doctor (or other health professionals) to ensure you have the safest and highest quality maternity care. The continued support and guidance from an EPP midwife can be invaluable. If this type of care is of interest to you it is important to remember that collaboration is essential, so ask your GP or private obstetrician to refer you to an EPP Midwife. If you are already booked into a public hospital ask if they have EPP Midwives with admitting rights. They will have collaboration arrangements in place so you won’t need any other referrals.

After birth you may choose to stay in hospital or go home within 4 hours. Your EPP midwife is only a phone call away providing your family with all the support required through your transition into parenthood. Daily followed by weekly visits will continue until your baby is 6 weeks of age. By this time your EPP Midwife will have already helped you access community support such as your local Child Health Clinic, linked you back with your GP and provided you with your own personal record of all your pregnancy, birth and postnatal care. Private midwifery practices may also provide a friendly space for ongoing social or information groups where midwives and families stay in touch with each other for many years.

Once you have chosen your EPP Midwife make an appointment to see if you will work well together. Remember, they are there to support you and your family in your birth choices and the establishment of a good relationship is paramount. Your midwife will continue to work in partnership with you, your family and doctor throughout your pregnancy and your early parenting journey ensuring you are

Maintaining Happiness in your relationship Words: David Neophyton

So, boy meets girl, or girl meets boy. Exciting isn’t it! But as we all know, this state doesn’t last. Why not? My theory is that something gets in the way; and that thing is called ‘life’. We aren’t always strong enough or able to fight the negative distractions that life throws our way. The good news is we can be if we get back to basics. If we remain mindful and appreciative of the little things and what we have with our partner, we can fight back and not let life’s stressors overly influence our lives. The most powerful thing we can do is to remain positive. We can achieve this by thinking positively. It is our thoughts that primarily dictate how we feel emotionally. Test yourself: If you think positively do you tend to have a positive or negative emotional response? Positive, right. If you think negatively, do you tend to have a positive or negative emotional response? Negative, correct. Now, we aren’t machines, so therefore, we can’t be expected to always think and feel positively. This is where communication and an unconditional support for one another come into play. Feeling supported when we are having a tough time or overwhelmed with ‘life’ is vital to us feeling connected and loved no matter what. We are all very busy, have lots on, and much of this is stressful and demanding. All of this doesn’t however have to occupy all of our time. We are all allowed to have a break from this from time to time- in fact it is highly recommended we do so, for our own sake and sanity and for the health and longevity of our relationships. Having a break from the stressors in our life actually helps to restore our resilience and ability to confront and conquer what we have going on in our lives. Take time to freshen yourself, to remind yourself there is in fact more to life than what we currently have going on. Take time to dream, of a time that we are again in control. This is best done through goal setting. Have something to look forward to, make plans, and take the time to regroup.

Rekindle and revisit where you first met for example, where you went to dinner for the first time as a couple, rent the first movie you saw together- most of all, remind each other of this history and renew your plans for the future. Be mindful of introducing variety and spontaneity into your lives. Excitement is a great antidote to humdrum and stress. Most of all be there for each other in good times and bad- sound familiar?. We don’t plan for the bad but we can plan for good times. Be thankful for the little things and be unselfish in your thinking and in your actions. If we have our partner’s welfare and happiness regularly on our mind, we can achieve so much and trust me, it comes back in kind. Put more effort into creating and maintaining happiness rather than solely into life’s stressors. Remember to have fun where and when you can, find things to laugh at together and you’ll find that, on balance, life together can be rewarding, fun and happy.

The Lunchbox Revolution Words: Jeni Bone

Aiming to navigate through the confusing mire of food and ingredient choices, The Lunchbox Revolution is a colourful easy to follow resource guide for parents and children with tips on how to pack a great tasting and healthy lunchbox, as well as fundamental nutritional information about everyday foods. Written by Naturopath, nutrition specialist and busy Gold Coast Mum, Mona Hecke, The Lunchbox Revolution is destined to help every family get back to basics and rediscover great tasting healthy foods that are simple to prepare and kids will love to eat. With the tagline: “Make it, eat it, love it” the book, which is small enough to carry in your handbag as a reference at the shops, Mona gives people a basic introduction to nutrition, with a host of recipes and lunch ideas, including ingredient options. She addresses frequently asked questions about everyday health matters in an easy to read format as well as helpful recipe ideas from breakfast through to dinner. “Mums were coming to me and asking me ‘what are the healthy options?’ ‘what can I pack for my children’s lunches that are not boring and they will eat?’ The recipes are simple enough and very

visual so that kids can make them and they want to make them!” Mona hopes The Lunchbox Revolution inspires change in the way we look at food, purchase food and prepare food. “I hope that this book becomes a valuable resource tool for every family and inspires everyone to choose ‘fresh over fast’. Childhood Obesity, Diabetes, Allergies and chronic health conditions are on the rise throughout the western world and this can be largely attributed to the foods we are eating,” explains Mona. “It is time for change! We need to get back to basics and it all starts at home.” Recipes cover a range of cuisines, tastes and food group variations while still keeping in mind the nutritional requirements that growing bodies need... and the recipes are not just for the kids. Working parents can benefit too while saving money on buying lunches in the work place. The favourite section which attracts the most comments and feedback is “balls” – chicken, beef, tuna, vegetarian, and sweet balls like chocolate and peanut butter that are healthy treats kids can enjoy when they get home from school.

The price point was important when Mona designed the book. “Most importantly, I wanted it to be accessible and portable. It’s full of advice, recipes and nutritional and naturopathic tips and information, for just $9.95 The Lunchbox Revolution is more than just another recipe book. With professional advice on common topics such as Allergies, Asthma, Eczema, Food Preservatives and Colourings, as well as an easy guide to the importance of Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats, and much more. It is available at Health and Organic Stores, as well as Health Clinics. Fundraising opportunities are available to schools, kindies, sports clubs and youth groups with $1 from every book donated back to your organisation. More at www.thelunchboxrevolution.com.au

Education

8.

Encourage correct pronunciation rather than baby talk or poor speech, as reading and spelling depends heavily on speech and hearing. Insist on initial sounds of words being clear.

9.

Have your child practise writing their name, as well as the numerals 1 to 10. Dotting their name and having them trace over it is a great way to start. You can then move on to writing it in the sand, with a stick in the dirt, using crayons, with paint on a brush, by finger painting, and by cutting letters and numerals out of magazines and newspapers.

IS YOUR CHILD ON TARGET FOR STARTING SCHOOL?

10.

Play sorting games and get your child to distinguish between different objects.

11. Develop a positive attitude and build resilience in your child so they have a better chance of getting along with others and want to learn. 12. Immerse your child in lots of activities to develop their fine motor skills (play dough, cutting with scissors, pulling, scrunching, threading, twisting).

Words: Kirsty Boniface BEd / BSpExSc

Sending your little one off to school can be a daunting experience for both parent and child. With the Australian Curriculum changing and the expectations put on children starting prep being a lot higher, it is important that children start school with confidence and at the right level. It is a big deal for children to make this transition and the more comfortable they are with learning activities, the better. It is not about pressuring your child or pushing them too hard or too fast, it’s about giving them appropriate early literacy, numeracy and social skills so they feel comfortable and confident when they start school.

3. Sing songs or nursery rhymes. Being able to hear the sounds in words is extremely important in the development of reading and writing. Rhyming is a great way to have fun with this and it can be done anywhere, in the car, at the park, whilst packing up the toys and many more.

4. Develop routines with your child and ask them to talk about these. For example, ask them to tell you how you clean your teeth or how to put your seatbelt on.

1. Read to your child daily! Have fun with books and

5. Play outdoors… bouncing, catching and throwing large balls, walking along balance boards, climbing, swinging, crawling, tumbling, rolling, hopping, skipping, water play, etc. This not only develops their gross motor skills and strength, but also enables them to explore a variety of numeracy concepts such as measuring, counting and spatial awareness.

make reading time an enjoyable time. Borrow books from the library and show your child that you enjoy reading also. It is important that both parents model this, as men need to be seen as reading role models for their sons also.

6. Look for sounds (letters)... they are everywhere. Make sure you use the sound the letter makes rather than the letter name to identify it. This is crucial for when they learn to read and sound out words.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP PREPARE MY CHILD FOR SCHOOL? You can help to prepare your child for school at home while having fun

My top 12 tips of things you can do at home:

Talk to your child about lots of different subjects and encourage them to ask questions, take a risk and have a go at answering them. 32 | Coast Kids GC

Play word games such as ‘I Spy’. You can even mix it up a bit and use colours to help you ’spy’. For example, ‘I spy something that is red’.

These early years are the most receptive for learning in a child’s life. Providing fun-filled learning experiences sets a solid foundation for your child’s entry to school. If your child resists any activities, do not push it, instead try a different style of activity. All children learn in different ways so some activities may not suit your child’s learning styles.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS READY FOR SCHOOL? Every child is different. They all learn in different ways and at different times, but when they begin school there are some things they are expected to know.

WHEN STARTING PREP, YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE ABLE TO: • Know how to make friends and get along with other children • Have an understanding of sharing and taking turns • Read and write their own name with a capital at the start and lower case for the rest • Hold a book the correct way up and be able to distinguish between words and pictures • Find the beginning of a story, talk about the characters and the plot, and predict what might happen • Recognise some letters (sounds) of the alphabet, especially those in their own name • Follow a routine, listen to and follow instructions • Count up to 10 • Recognise the numerals 1 -10 • Know their colours

Life is sometime too hectic to take the time to consider whether our finances in good shape, the consequences can be worse than taking the time to plan. Lifestyle

Everything old is new again Words: Jeni Bone

What was once overlooked or thrown out as out of date is now something to be cherished, collected, creatively restyled and flaunted with pride. Vintage has firmly establishing itself as a hot fashion trend and fashionistas the world over can’t get enough of this look, with the likes of Beyoncé, Julia Roberts, Kate Moss and Michelle Obama have been snapped embracing the vintage vibe. And just look at the quantity, phenomenal array and the prices of vintage gowns, furs, accessories and shoes on ebay! Garage sales, second hand stores, preloved, recycled, consignment stores, granny’s cast offs and the good old St Vinnie’s are back in fashion, as women (and men) of all walks of life scour these treasure troves for pieces to prize. Locally, you can get your hands on some of the most authentic, quality goods at markets like the Village Markets and Miami Marketta, set in the grounds of Rabbit+Cocoon arts precinct and at forefront of the cultural revolution on the Gold Coast. Focused on nurturing local talent, The Village Markets (TVM) began in 2008 with a humble nine stalls on the oval at Burleigh Heads State School. This unique, open air fashion, art and designer market was created to fill a gap and provide a platform for talented emerging fashion designers, artists, photographers and vintage collectors to showcase their wares, and is fast becoming a favourite regular cultural event for the South East QLD region.

According to Emma Milikins, founder of Rabbit + Cocoon and Miami Marketta, vintage has never been out of fashion. “At the moment it’s enjoying a phase. For me, the popularity is sparking my creative eye. Vintage reflects the fact that alternative has become mainstream and trendy. It’s cool to create your own look and express yourself in clothing.”

Like the Miami Marketta, Vintage is very inclusive, says Emma. “There’s so much diversity in what’s available, that there’s something for everybody. People are no longer reinventing the wheel, nothing’s new. It’s about inspiration and borrowing ideas and being yourself. If you’re confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing, it comes across.”

For her part, Emma considers “Vintage” garments and goods that are 30 years-plus. “That’s why

I DON’T LIKE IT! That’s the often heard cry of a child who has been offered just about everything edible by the desperate parent of a” fussy eater”. So when is a child a fussy eater by habit or behaviour, and when is a fussy eater a child whose dietary woes are telling us something? As a general rule, introducing solids is a critical point in a child’s eating habits. The temptation to add salty, sweet or other additives to food when an infant rejects it is a temptation best avoided. Starting our littlies on freshly prepared basics such as sweet potato, pear, apple, pumpkin etc is an ideal start. Tinned foods etc often contain salt, sugar and other additives and can be a source of forming fussy habits. Progressing our children through the basic food groups will start to reveal a dietary trend to favorites and total rejects. Progressively increasing food groups also helps us identify those foods that our child may have a

Words: John Burchell reaction to such as an allergy or intolerance. Children will usually be telling us what they need by their eating trends. A child may have a certain food that they will sometimes devour and other times reject. There will be foods they ask for time and time again as there will be foods that they will try once and then never try again. It is the latter two groups that are most likely to indicate areas that may need to be addressed. From these we will see trends to or away from carbs, proteins, starches, fats and sweets etc. From those trends, deficiencies of certain amino acids and enzymes will express in the foods being craved or desired. Certain organ functions may also show as being deficient or excessive. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a common cause of fussy eating. Mineral deficiencies can be verified by blood tests or hair mineral analysis. I find the latter of great value in assessing children as it is non-invasive and highly accurate.

As an example, Zinc is essential to the production and regulation of many factors associated with appetite and digestion as Chromium is for regulation of sugars. So maybe your child is instinctively telling you that they need a little help with their dietary planning and nutrition? It may also be that they need assessment and treatment for predisposition to digestive problems or acquired dietary disorders instead of being disciplined for what could otherwise be seen as a behavioral issue.

All work and no play? It’s not all bad news A study has revealed Aussie kids think their parents work too much, at the expense of family time and a shoulder to lean on for advice and support. The study by the Australian Institute of Family Studies as part of the 2012 National Families Week in May, interviewed 10- to 11-year-olds with a mother or father in paid work and found 35 per cent reported their father worked too much and 27 per cent said their mother worked too much. Parents were also feeling the pressure, with 23 per cent of mothers saying that work made family time less enjoyable and more pressured, the research suggested. AIFS director Professor Alan Hayes said when mothers and fathers believed work made family time less fun, the children tended to agree with them. Professor Hayes said the study showed Australian children were affected by the spill over of parents’ work-related worry or stress into family time and some report their parents were spending too much time at work.

Recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicate that work pressure on families is unlikely to reduce soon, with more women than ever returning to work once their youngest child starts school. For mums whose youngest child was of school age (6 to 14 years), 79 per cent participated in the labour force in 2010-11, up from 77 per cent in 2006-07. For mums with school-aged children, 55 per cent were working part-time in 2010-11 and 10 per cent of those mums both wanted to work more. AIFS researcher Dr Jennifer Baxter said despite inherent work-family tensions, parents gained benefits - actual and perceived - from being in paid employment. “Apart from the financial rewards, paid employment can have a range of benefits for parents including experiencing social interaction and feeling satisfied doing meaningful or interesting work and these

benefits flow through to their children,” she said. “Our research found that among employed parents of children aged 10-11 years, 67 per cent of both mothers and fathers said that work had a positive effect on their children.” But Professor Hayes said getting the balance right was important as children relied on their parents for advice and support. “Finding a way of meeting the demands of paid work, as well as taking care of children is difficult for many parents and underlines the need for workplaces to continue to adopt more flexible approaches to allow their employees to manage their family responsibilities.” More at www.aifs.gov.au

wintery tones. Or if you’re feeling more pale with less sun exposure, opt for a lighter shade with soft highlights. Fortunately for those of us who like to, or have to colour our hair, the next generation of salon colours are extremely conditioning due to the technology of all professional colours being far more advanced. Says Tracey: “They provide longer-lasting colour results with exceptional condition and shine.” Key Trends this season are blonde, with highlights of creamy vanilla blondes with shades of honey and cinnamon for softer, natural options for winter. “The biggest shift in trend in colour is the return of beautiful solid colors with minimal variation to make a powerful impact with high gloss. Rich brunettes shine with chocolate shades and cool tones of violets. Reds are bright, bright and brighter.” If your tastes run a little more daring, Tracey says

With the strain of the harsh summer sun, your hair can be distressed so winter is the best time to replenish your locks with lost moisture, advises Tracey Hughes, creative director of Mieka Hairdressing. “To keep hair in the best possible condition, treatments should be applied on a regular basis at home or in-salon. Protein treatments are best for strengthening hair and the stronger your hair is the thicker and fuller it will feel and look.” In winter months, because it is more difficult to allow your hair to dry naturally, a heat protectant is essential when blow drying, using straightening irons, or any heat styling tools. Winter is a great time to be considering a colour change, perhaps going darker, with warmer, richer

fresh, modern and an interesting change from the regular hair colors. Choosing your hair colour is much like choosing your clothes. Tracey advises to take into account your skin tone and eye colour to determine whether you are a cool or warm complexion. “When opting for colour our Mieka colourists always consider your skin tone and eye colour first plus the maintenance of your colour upkeep and what commitment you are prepared to take.” This season, take heart: the notion of “natural beauty” is what it’s all about. “Remember your hair needs a holiday in winter too!” Tracey says. “Take a break from blow-drying by pulling your hair back into a fashionable loose ponytail, bun or braid.” More at www.miekahairdressing.com.au

Dr Oz recommends these 8 top foods for healthy hair: Green tea, walnuts, and salmon. The polyphenols and omega-3s in these foods Help make your hair shiny. (If you’re fighting dandruff, try rinsing with green tea. It helps prevent dandruff-causing fungus.) Fruit. Brightly coloured fruit, such as peaches, strawberries, mango, kiwi, and tomatoes (yep, they’re a fruit!) are rich in vitamin C, which is essential for making collagen that gives structure to hair. Beans, whole grains, and other healthful B-rich foods. B vitamins (especially vitamin B6 and folic acid) ensure a good supply of blood and oxygen to your hair follicles, which encourages growth and may slow hair loss. Other B-rich foods include beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower, soybeans, nuts, and eggs. Dark green veggies. Think spinach, broccoli, and Swiss chard. They’re great sources of vitamins A and C, which help produce sebum, the scalp oil that’s a natural hair conditioner. Dark sesame seeds. The Chinese swear this keeps a man’s hair darker longer. Avocados. Avocados and avocado oil may prevent dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which kills hair follicles, from getting where it needs to go. More at www.realage.com

Skin Deep Do we need to change our skincare routine with the arrival of cooler weather? According to the skincare professionals at The Layt Clinic, if you are taking care of your skin and are using good quality skin care and ingredients, your skin should not feel dehydrated or dry. In winter, our skin endures many extremes - heat in the car, office, home and the dry cold air outside. Then add the sun, which is constant on the Gold Coast and it is a recipe for dry and prematurely ageing skin. “Sunscreen is vital every day of the year”, says Alyssa Dawson, Paramedical Aesthetician at The Layt Clinic. Sun damage is a large contributor to poor skin quality and also increases the ageing process. Sun damage can cause pigmentation, dehydration, a leathery skin appearance and fine lines. To decrease the affect of sun damage we then look at rejuvenating the skin layers. Alyssa adds that “it is crucial to any skincare regime to include a great topical Vitamin A, to help the skin function correctly.” “If your skin is dehydrated, dry and even oily, Vitamin A will help control these conditions. Vitamins C, B and other antioxidants are great for the skin’s function and overall glow and using scientifically proven skincare is extremely important as it helps make cellular changes within the skin.” Pigmentation on the skin appears as brown patches

or blotches. Winter months are a great time to address pigmentation by having treatments such as IPL, laser, medi-peels or even specialised skin products, as you are less likely to be out in the sun and therefore better results can be achieved. Feeding our skin from within is also important. A healthy diet and drinking lots of water both help hydrate and nourish our body on a cellular level. So, to answer the question about changing our skin care regime in Winter – in Winter we need a little more hydration than in Summer and it is also a great time to have certain treatments to help improve our skin condition. We still need to cleanse our skin, use our topical vitamins and sunscreen but may vary the strength of the product or the frequency of the product in order to maintain great hydration. Here are some of Alyssa’s tips for great skin all year round. • Do use a good sunscreen daily • Do use quality topical anti-oxidants and Vitamins • Do get great advice from a fully trained and experienced skincare professional • Don’t over scrub the skin • Don’t over use your products • Avoid the sun 10am-3pm Enjoy your Winter skin and feel the difference. Mamas that Rock!

Keeley O’Connor interviews Tammy Zarb - Industry Aerial Arts

This month we introduce you to Tammy Zarb, Founder and Director of Industry Aerial Arts in Southport. This Mama has rocked her way through the USA as a classical dancer and aerial artist. She has showcased her talent for the likes of celebrities such as John Travolta, William H Macy and Pamela Anderson to name a few, plus has performed at countless corporate and gala events! She has returned to her Australian roots and has set out to teach our community how to fly high just like she has! She juggles this business with raising two beautiful daughters.

Tell us about your business / current role? I am the Founder and Artistic Director of Industry Aerial Arts located in southport. We specialise in aerial acrobatic classes and school holiday workshops for children of all ages and aerial fitness for adults. www.industryaerialarts.com.au

What time does a typical day start for you? Early! Anywhere from 5am, then the morning routine begins. Getting the kids breakfast and dressed, then finally getting myself dressed and out the door on time.

Do you have help around the house? My husband works away for a month at a time. He is a huge help when he is home. My mum is always around to help me, and lives close by. I work four nights per week, my mum takes care of my two little girls, feeding, bathing and getting them ready for bedtime. But during the daytime I am juggling the kids, household duties and admin work for the business. Makes for a crazy day!

Who does the cooking and cleaning at your house? It’s a team effort. My husband when he is home likes to cook and we both share the cleaning. Otherwise my mum usually helps out when she is minding the kids.

If you have 10 minutes to yourself – what do you do? If I have 10 minutes to myself, I reheat my coffee for the 10th time and try to enjoy the quiet and read a magazine. 46 | Coast Kids GC

KIDS What do you do for childcare? My eldest daughter, who is two-and-a-half, attends childcare two days per week. She absolutely loves it. All the staff at her childcare are fabulous, she has made a lot of little friends. Childcare also allows me to take care of any admin work that may need to be done. It also allows me to spend time with my youngest child who is just six months old.

Do your kids do many extra curricular activities? If there is any spare time in our week, we spend it together at the park or walking as a family. We are going to be starting our eldest in swimming lessons in the summer. Although I cannot wait till she is old enough to start dancing in the air.

What do you do for fun with the kids? Painting our nails is always the highlight of our week. Red is our favourite colour. We love strolling along Burleigh Beach, also playing on the big pirate ship at Pirate Park. We love to make sand castles, sing and dance for fun.

FUN What is your favourite thing to do for date night with your partner? Usually we go to our favourite Thai restaurant – Chiangmai Thai in surfers Paradise. Followed by long conversations over a cup of coffee and of course, dessert. I have the biggest sweet tooth.

GIRL STUFF Where do you head to when you get time for a girls night out?

Can you share any tips on finding the right balance and that juggling act?

I can’t remember the last time I had a girl’s night out.

You have to time manage your family life with your work life, allocate time for them both then make sure you stick to it. Sometimes this can be a real challenge for me.

Who do you relate most to on Sex and the City? Miranda.

What is your best beauty tip for mums?

What is your favourite Gold Coast place to hang with the family? The park is always a blast. Abrakidazzle Play Centre and Zarraffa’s for our babycinos.

How about favourite place to eat out as a family? Pete’s Fish Market next to Marina Mirage. Then off to Max Brenner for dessert, to satisfy the sweet tooth again.

Mamas that rock

Always moisturize, it keeps your skin looking hydrated and youthful. It is a good substitute for sleep.

Favourite place to shop? Robina Town Centre has all I need - Lorna Jane, Forever New, the Mac Store and Max Brenner, for the sweet tooth fix.

Fantasy Husband…that celebrity dream man?

How do you stay motivated? It is never hard to find motivation, as a parent with such a young and active family lifestyle. I have never been one to sit still. If I am not teaching, then I am in the office working. If I am not playing with my girls, then I am cooking and cleaning. When I am not doing much, my mind is ticking over with creative ideas and choreography for my students.

I love Pierce Brosnan, especially in “The Thomas Crown Affair”. He is sharp, handsome and wears at suit extremely well.

TIPS Must have parenting tip or tool? I believe supporting each other and being consistent when it comes to discipline. We also make sure we keep their little minds active with plenty of activities. Last of all having a routine helps keep everything going nice and smooth and gives them comfort and a solid foundation too.

How to…

Although this is a heap of fun, it is also a very easy project for little hands to do so do your best to take a step back and let them have a go! They are to put enough shaving foam into the tray to cover most of it and about 1cm deep. Then squeeze undiluted drops of food colouring into the foam and with the end of a paint brush, pencil or similar get the kids to glide it through the foam, blending the colours into a marbling effect. Then lay one paper doily down into the foam and gently tap it all over so that the colour takes. Leave for one minute for the brightest colour results. Gently peel doily off foam and with a spatula or the like, slowly remove foam off doily and let your wonderful marble printed creation dry. Repeat as many times as you like. When dry, place doilies onto coloured A4 papers in a design your kids choose (remember we are in the background on this one!!). Glue into place and then let the kids go crazy with marker pens writing anything from a favourite recipe, a menu of their choice, a poem, a picture or even their own name in big block letters. Once complete, head to your local office shop and have them laminated for protection and enjoy many meals to come with bright and fun placemats!
