He also mentions the famous people who were born or grew up here and Bundaberg’s connection with the song “This is Australia” by Gang Gajang.

One beach that especially comes to life in a unique and unforgettable way is Mon Repos, as the turtles arrive to lay their eggs from November, and thousands of visitors experience Bundaberg’s turtle season through to March when the tiny hatchlings scurry to the ocean. A survey conducted by The Urban List reveals what local residents have always known – that Bundaberg is ranked first in the judges Top 10 Best Cities in Australia. “If you only know Bundaberg because it produces Australia’s best spirit, top-quality sugar products and delicious ginger beer, you only know a small fraction of the story,” says judge Daniel Colasimone.

It was written when band members were sitting on a back patio, overlooking the canefields on Bargara Road. We know you’ll enjoy your stay here and hope The Bundy Book provides you with some ideas of things to see and special places to go.

Mayor’s Message Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Cr. Mal Forman If you are a first time visitor, “welcome”. If you are returning to the Bundaberg Region then “welcome back”. I appreciate this opportunity to share what locals already know and that is we live in one of the best locations in the world. Beside our fabulous climate, which is rated as one of the most equitable in the world, we have an incredible array of natural beauty set amid the 6400 square kilometres we call the Bundaberg Region. Sweeping hinterland framed by the red hills and lush green of the cane and tree crops at our southern entrance at Childers to the charming rural township of Gin Gin (once voted Queensland’s Most Friendly Town) to the north, Bundaberg is surrounded by beauty painted from nature’s palette. Our coastline strip is regarded as one of the best in Australia with beaches at Bargara, Kelly’s Beach and Woodgate achieving international recognition. Bundaberg is also a great stepping off point to the Great Barrier Reef with Lady Elliott and Lady Musgrave Islands providing day trippers with a genuine taste of paradise. Our rivers and associated waterways are welcoming venues for boaties and recreational fishers while the coastline waterways stretching to the islands out from Bundaberg are in pristine condition and just beckoning holiday makers.

Fishing under the bridge. Bundaberg City is the central hub of our region where you will find two major shopping centres and a thriving CBD. Council is investing capital in extending its zoo facility at Alexandra Park with the Park also home to recently resited Colonial Guns which have been a part of Bundaberg’s history for more than 100 years. The guns were a part of the Queensland Navy in the colonial days prior to Federation. A visit to Bundaberg is never complete without sampling some of our world famous Bundaberg Rum which is to be found at the Distillery where guided tours are available along with sampling opportunities. Take the opportunity to view the wonderfully interactive Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel - the home of Bundaberg Ginger Beer as well as the must see attraction of the Hinkler Hall of Aviation located in the beautiful surrounds of our Botanic Gardens. See also Bert’s home dismantled at its English location in Southampton and reassembled brick by brick in Bundaberg. A fitting tribute to our world famous pioneering aviator!

Bundy in Bloom procession. Bundaberg Regional Council also prides itself on providing and supporting year round community activities and events such as Bundy Flavours, Childers Festival, Chinese New Year, Crush Festival, New Year’s Fireworks and a host of sporting events that utilise our outstanding facilities. Tens of thousands of visitors arrive in the Bundaberg Region every year and many take the opportunity to invest locally. Bundaberg Regional Council is proactively encouraging investment in the region and its Bundaberg Open for Development initiative has been overwhelmingly successful in promoting growth across the region. If you want to know more about the Bundaberg Region ask a local or simply head to Council’s website at www.bundaberg.qld.gov.au and check our links to Planning and Development or to Business Bundaberg.

35 craters – all in one location, over 25 million years old. The Mystery Craters is an usual rock formation, discovered beneath a layer of silt and sand by a farmer in 1971. Theories include- a large meteorite, result of sea action, hot spring activity, sink holes from volcanic action, roof of subterranean lake.

It was named The Sloping Hummock by Matthew Flinders as he sailed along the coast in 1799 with the road leading up to the lookout completed in 1931. Just over 100 years ago – Bundaberg became a city! 2013 marked the centenary of Bundaberg officially declared a city, after being a town since 1902. Work in those days was mainly labouring and usually on a casual basis – farming, railway maintenance and stevedoring. Industries were sawmilling as well as blacksmithing, coach and boat building. In 1867 John and Gavin Steuart were timbergetters camping on the northern bank of the river on the site later occupied by North Bundaberg Railway Station and farmers soon followed. Experimental sugarcane growing followed and the rest is sweet

history with a number of juice mills operating along with complete sugar mills extracting and processing the produce of the juice mills to manufacture raw sugar. The early sugar industry was supported by plantations belonging to mill owners and farmers employing South Sea Islander labour. (Kanakas).

North Bundy ... Where it all began Across the bridge, “over north” as the locals say, is where Bundaberg had its beginnings in 1867 when timbergetters, the Steuart brothers camped on the present North Railway Station site with farmers following to make sweet history.

Tallon family honoured Officially opened in 1995, The Tallon Bridge is named after another well-known North Bundaberg family including cricket legend Don, considered by many the best wicketkeeper of the 20th century. He represented Queensland Country against Douglas Jardine’s team in the infamous Bodyline Tour and played alongside Don Bradman as one of The Invincibles in 1948.

Bert Hinkler's childhood home in Gavan Street which was destroyed in a fire.

Returning to his hometown after his illustrious cricketing career, Don with brother Matt ran the Tallon Store on the corner of Gavin Street and Hinkler Avenue (now Café Oodeys). One of Don’s favourite “watering holes” was the Globe Hotel in Perry Street.

A school opened in 1875, and the Bundaberg Foundry in 1885, where world famous aviator Bert Hinkler worked in 1907 before higher skies beckoned. He was born at the now demolished family home Woodbine Villa in Gavin Street where he famously taxied to his mother’s front door after his record-breaking flight. Hinkler Hall Of Aviation and Bert’s English home are located in the Botanic Gardens also at North Bundaberg. The Burnett Traffic Bridge was opened in 1913, the same year Bundaberg was declared a city. 100 years later North Bundaberg residents were the hardest hit in the devastating January 2013 floods, the worst in the region’s history.

Hours:฀9am฀to฀4pm Monday฀to฀Sunday

The Botanic Gardens - 27 hectares and 10,000 trees and shrubs sugar industry. It runs every Sunday and also on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays during school holidays. The Little Train can also be booked for special occasions on other days, telephone 4152 6609.

Located on Gin Gin Road in the city’s northern outskirts, the Botanic Gardens sprawl over 27 hectares with a variety of over 10,000 trees and shrubs. Lakes create a diverse habitat with up to 114 species of birds. The Gardens have a wedding chapel, shaded picnic areas, themed Chinese and Japanese gardens, boardwalks and children’s playground.

Café 1928 is the latest venue for coffee and fresh snacks adjacent to the Hinkler Hall Of Aviation in the Botanic Gardens (1928 was the year Bert Hinkler made his historic solo flight from England to Australia). Phone 4153 1928 to arrange tour groups, group lunches or daytime functions.

Hinkler Hall of Aviation This enthralling visitor experience honours the life and pioneering efforts of Bundaberg’s famous aviation pioneer, Bert Hinkler who was significant in the advancement of aviation during the early 20th century.

Step back in time at our Bundaberg Historical Museum. Beautifully maintained in the Botanic Gardens, this quaint haven of nostalgia has the famous Lucke Quads’ pram here, the only one of its kind made in Australia. Also re-created is an old schoolroom, butcher shop, general store, bank office, hospital (with iron lung) milk cart with horse, even a jail.

The Hall itself is a dynamic and unique structure, made of soaring glass and steel, and filled with his personal story. Bert’s accomplishments are brought to life with interactive and multi-media exhibits; glide like Bert, sit in a cockpit; learn through touch screens and theatrettes; view his original Avro Baby and five other full size aircraft and the artefacts from his amazing life.

Fairymead House Sugar Museum was a bicentennial gift from the Bundaberg Sugar Company and now overlooks the Botanic Gardens in its new role of sugar industry museum, housing photographs and memorabilia exploring the technology, development and history of milling. Guided tours from 11am to 12 pm except Saturdays.

The Hinkler Hall of Aviation incorporating the magnificently restored historic Hinkler House is situated in the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens. Open seven (7) days a week from 9am to 4pm. Australian Sugar Cane Railway is a working museum and the ideal way to view the Botanic Gardens’ lakes and wildlife, while riding on the train hauled by authentic cane locos once used in our

Off the beaten track – 4WD areas The Bundaberg region contains a host of challenging 4WD areas. Kinkuna National Park has trails for both beginners and veterans on track and sand. At Woodgate and Burrum Point there are good rough tracks and beach access.

National Park.

Watalgan State Forest south of Rosedale has challenging rocky tracks meandering around and over some decent sized hills and Goodnight Scrub National Park boasts One Tree Hill Lookout, the route to which is a great challenge for rugged 4WD enthusiasts. There are many more parks in the region with 4WD access including Deepwater, Mt Walsh, Littabella, and Auburn River

Beach Driving – at Moore Park Beach there’s 4WD access at the northern 10kms of beach as far as the mouth of the Kolan River. Approximately 50kms north of Bundaberg, Norval Park Beach offers 20kms of beach driving along the southern section towards Miara. 70kms north of Bundaberg, Rules Beach has several tracks, eventually emerging at Agnes Water.

Eurimbula National Park is accessible from Round Hill Road 19kms from Agnes Water. There’s 4WD access through the park to Bustard Camp Ground or Middle Creek Camp Ground.

Bundy’s wildlife author Coleen Heathwood, author/photographer/poet and former primary teacher has published her fourth book in the series on Australian birds, lizards and other wildlife bush and backyard creatures. Woongarra Willie Wagtails joins the other three enchanting books which are also valuable classroom tools, filled with Coleen’s superb photography and educational activities. “Children have wonderful imaginations and it’s the little things they notice – birds, little flowers, lizards - and they’re fascinated by the life-cycles and endearing habits of wildlife creatures.” Coleen’s books are available from Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery’s gift store, Dymocks, and post offices at Sugarland and Bargara.

BARGARA

The early days

Take a walk – Burnett Heads to Bargara Coral Coast Pathways will keep you active along the beautiful coastline all the way from the Burnett Heads Lighthouse to Neilson Park at Bargara, through to Kelly’s Beach. Start and finish wherever you want. The Pathway from Oaks Beach at Burnett Heads to Neilson Park is known as the Turtle Trail for walkers and cyclists to share. The pasturage reserve is home to abundant native flora and wildlife so take note of any guidelines. Neilson Park is a great place to have a rest overlooking the ocean before you may your way to the Bargara business district along the Streetscape with its restaurants, cafes and hotel. You’ll soon be at The Basin, the man made rock pool, famous for family friendly swimming just near the Golf Club as you follow the pathway south to the 2km stretch that is beautiful Kelly’s Beach, home to luxurious apartments along its foreshore. Walking checklist – during summer plan to walk early in the morning or late afternoon, take water with you, remember hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Work up to a moderate pace (slight but noticeable increase in breathing and heart rate), slow down if you feel breathless and if you have chest pain stop immediately. For your Coral Coast Pathways brochure and map visit Bundaberg Regional Council offices, either in the CBD or Hughes Road Bargara.

When you take your stroll along the boardwalk from The Basin to Nielson Park, take a look at the noticeboard at the entrance to the park, depicting the history of the Railway Picnic from the 1920s and other significant Bargara events. Photographs include famous aviator Bert Hinkler, visiting Bargara School children after his historic flight in 1928 (see if you can pick him out); the Roller-Skating Rink (1954) Siren Of The Surf beauties (1950s) Neilson Park Bathing Huts and much more. Prior to 1921 Bargara was known as Sandhills with the School opening in 1893, later renamed Bargara State School. The name Bargara is derived from two adjacent localities, Barolin and Woongarra.

Turtle Encounters – the real meaning of “awesome” Mon Repos Beach 15 minutes from Bundaberg’s city centre has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland and most significant loggerhead population in the South Pacific. Turtle Watching Time begins in early November through to March when the hatchlings scurry out of the nest down to the ocean. These “grand old ladies of the deep” can travel up to 3000 kms to their traditional nesting beach every few years. “Researchers now also have an idea where they go in between visits,” said one of the rangers. “A satellite tracking device placed on the turtle’s carapace sends signals showing how long they take to travel from feeding grounds to nesting areas.” Loggerheads begin breeding around age 30 with one of the oldest tagged at Mon Repos 60 years old. It is believed they live to about 100. Rangers and volunteers do their utmost to ensure maximum comfort and minimum stress to the magnificent creatures, while allowing tourists to get up close and personal, to witness nature unfolding. To begin your Mon Repos Turtle Experience you are required to book and pre-purchase tickets. Tickets can only be booked through Bundaberg Region Visitor Services by phoning 41 53 8888 or www.bundabergregion.org/ destinations/natural-encounters/turtles

WOODGATE / CHILDERS Flying High at Apple Tree Creek

Woodgate Beach – perfect place to unwind

6km north of Childers towards Bundaberg is a great flora and fauna bird habitat, one of Australia’s largest walk-through free flight aviaries.

One of Queensland’s safest, cleanest beaches with calm waters, white sandy shores without the crowds or high-rises, Woodgate Beach is 25 minutes from the main north-south highway at Childers. The lifestyle incorporates great fishing and safe swimming and holidaymaking for young families. The area is also popular for birdwatchers, nature lovers, four wheel drivers and those wanting a touch of old-fashioned beach holidays without the bright lights, high-rises and foodie strips. The boardwalk lets you enjoy the National Park to its fullest, so cycle the 6.5km of pathways that trace the foreshore. Accommodation suits all styles with B&Bs, camping, apartments and beach houses.

For authentic country hospitality at a traditional country pub, you can’t beat the Apple Tree Creek Hotel. Think wide verandahs, shady trees, beautiful bush setting and friendly service. There’s even a designated camping area 100 metres away.

****** Cordalba Pub – did you know? In the heart of sugar cane plantation country, 13km north-west of Childers and 40km south of Bundaberg is the quaint town of Cordalba and if you call into the hotel here’s a bit of history. Former licensee Maude Sheehan was famous for her fiery temper matching her hair, kicking out troublemakers one of whom returned the next day riding his horse into the bar. Her nude portrait now watches over the public bar alongside a rare early Marilyn Monroe poster, which was retrieved from the town’s rubbish dump.

Woodgate provides some of the best fishing, prawning and crabbing waterways of the south-east. Fish the beach or tidal creeks and rivers and there’s a boat ramp. ... nestled between a stunning white sandy beach and 23,000 hectares of National Park.

Visit the Apple Tree Creek Markets held every second Saturday from 7am to 12.

Big plans for Elliott Heads This is the southern most of the local beaches at the mouth of the Elliott River surrounded by sugar cane and smallcrops farms. This attractive coastal village has unit and cabin accommodation and is a pleasant drive from Bundaberg. At Elliott Heads, a major residential development, including a shopping complex has been approved to house up to 9.000 in the next 20 years. It is expected to increase both population and commercial activity Elliott Heads has swimming at the patrolled surf beach and it’s popular for kite surfing, jet-skiing while the fishing is good either from the shore or nearby reefs. Sandstone cliffs form an interesting headland and the rocky foreshore is fun to explore. A shady landscaped caravan park, picnic and bbq spots make this a great family holiday destination. Riverview is a tiny village nestled on the northern bank of the estuary but provides large scale recreational opportunities. Great for fishing with boat ramp and pontoon.

Take your fishing rods when you go to Elliott Heads.

Facilities include IGA Supermarket, bakery, hardware, speciality stores, mini mart, service station with great food and a good night out at Moore Park Beach Bowls Club (bistro Tuesday to Sunday) and Moore Park Beach Tavern (open seven days) When you want to get up and go, take your 4WD along the northern 10km of beach to the mouth of the Kolan River with only the occasional roofline seen from the beach – you’ll feel a million miles away from the daily grind.

Innes Park, just south of Bargara is 15 kms from Bundy CBD, with the Reserve a recreational hub with playground, skate park, ball courts, and the inlet great for swimming or just cooling off. Walking south you come to Herb Muller Park with legendary Barolin Homestead built in 1912. Next is Barolin Rocks part of the Woongarra Marine Park with diving and snorkelling fans relishing the abundance of fish and coral. At the end of this picturesque section of the coastal walkway is the Coral Cove Resort with 18-hole championship golf course that has the longest hole in Australia at 635m and Pacific Ocean as its backdrop.
