Mayor’s Message Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Cr. Mal Forman If you are a first time visitor, “welcome”. If you are returning to the Bundaberg Region then “welcome back”. The Bundaberg Region is home to one of those rare places where the country, city and coast converge. Our traders and tourist operators are keen to spread the word that “Bundy is open for business”. After one look around you will confirm that the Bundaberg Region is back to its brilliant best. Our rivers and associated waterways are again welcoming boaties and recreational fishers while the coastline waterways stretching to the islands out from Bundaberg are in pristine condition and just beckoning holiday makers. Bundaberg City is the central hub of our town where you will find shops, Regional Art Gallery, Alexandra Park now with an emerging zoo, Bundaberg Rum Distillery as well as the wonderfully interactive Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel - the home of Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Bundaberg Regional Council also prides itself on providing and supporting year round community activities and events such as Bundy Flavours, Childers Festival, Chinese New Year, Crush Festival and a host of sporting events that utilise our outstanding facilities. Information on Council and Community Events can be found at www.bundabergregionevents.com.au.
“The Basin” on Kellys Beach at Bargara. If the natural beauty and abundance of attractions doesn’t get you in, then our climate – one of the most equitable in the world – certainly will! Highlights of our beaches and waterways include Paradise Dam, Buxton and Woodgate Beach in the south, through to Coral Cove, Innes Park, Elliott Heads, Bargara, Burnett Heads and Moore Park Beach centrally and the amazing Monduran Dam to the north. ****** But it is not just about our coastline. Within our region we also boast our highway gateway towns of Childers to the south and Gin Gin to the North. Childers is located overlooking rolling green hills in a rich horticultural and agribusiness belt. Its many boutique wineries, striking heritage buildings, friendly people and attractive streetscape make it the perfect place for a day trip or weekend getaway. In the very North of our region you venture into bushranger country with a visit to Gin Gin. Once home to Queensland’s only bushranger, James McPherson - alias “The Wild Scotchman” – Gin Gin has been honoured in Tidy Towns Awards as the Friendliest Town in Queensland. Picturesque and boasting a range of the tastiest pies anywhere along the Queensland coast, Gin Gin is a community proud of its history and heritage. Whether it’s catching a barra at Lake Monduran or sampling products from district wineries…tasting a wicked delight from Mammino's Ice Cream or checking out the Snakes Alive show at Childers … or experiencing the wonders of turtle hatching at Mon Repos - there’s something for everyone around the Bundaberg Region. You can find out more about the wonderfully diverse nature of the Bundaberg Region by logging into Council’s website at www. bundaberg.qld.gov.au. The Bundaberg region welcomes you as a tourist or potential investor or resident, and we invite you to come and experience the great lifestyle and limitless opportunities our region has to offer.

From the Editor’s pen
It’s great to see you here in Bundaberg at the time of its centenary (100 years since Bundaberg was declared a city in 1913) ) so why not take a walk around the CBD streets and note the historical buildings? In November 2013 the famous Bundaberg Rum celebrates its 125th anniversary with the launch of a special edition produced by master craftsmen by blending some of the distillery’s oldest and rarest rums. After devastating floods in early 2013, local businesses, tourism operators and the whole community have worked together, offering support and encouragement to see Bundaberg become the flourishing, vibrant and friendly place it is once again. Attractions that were temporarily closed are open and welcoming visitors, including of course the famous Turtle Tours at Mon Repos Beach that have thousands flocking to Bundaberg each year.
Our cover picture is a painting by Christine Hurst of Bargara, a well known Australian artist. Her work is sold in art galleries in Noosa and Brisbane. www.chrishurstart.com

Hinkler Hall – dynamic, modern, unique
This amazing visitor experience operated by Bundaberg Regional Council is an outstanding example of communities working together to celebrate and honour the life and pioneering efforts of Bundaberg’s own aviation pioneer, Bert Hinkler. A key element is its foundation as a cutting-edge interpretive facility that educates and entertains through preservation of Hinkler artefacts and memorabilia. See his favourite “Avro Baby” returned to its right home from the Queensland Museum, original documents, photos, memborabilia and multi-media exhibits. See the view over Mon Repos Beach exactly as Bert did when he began living his dream of aviation – explore the Globe Theatre, five aircraft, interactive displays, touch screens and archival area. Hinkler Hall stands as one of Australia’s most significant cultural and educational attractions, catering for residents and visitors to Bundaberg, history students and the budding aviation enthusiast. Entry to the Hall also includes admission to Bert’s English home, brought brick by brick from Southampton to stand proudly in the Botanic Gardens.

100 years ago – Bundy becomes a city!
2013 marks the centenary of Bundaberg officially declared a city, after being a town since 1902. Work in those days was mainly labouring and usually on a casual basis – farming, railway maintenance and stevedoring. Industries were sawmilling as well as blacksmithing, coach and boat building. In 1867 John and Gavin Steuart were timbergetters camping on the northern bank of the river on the site later occupied by North Bundaberg Railway Station and farmers soon followed. Experimental sugarcane growing followed and the rest is sweet history with a number of juice mills operating along with complete sugar mills extracting and processing the produce of the juice mills to manufacture raw sugar. The early sugar industry was support- e e e h Ú e h e e h h e e e h ed by plantations 47 Targo Street, Bundaberg belonging to mill owners and farmers Phone: 4152 9966 employing South Sea Islander labour. bout@aanet.com.au (Kanakas).

Bargara Beach – a terrific time of year to be here
The superb seaside haven of Bargara only 13kms from the Bundy CBD is a beachside paradise for families, singles, walkers, sailors, surfers, shoppers – whatever your holiday style you’ve picked the right place. Clean beaches with calm swimming and stinger-free waters (the very young and very old love it at our famous rockpool “The Basin”) and a wide range of accommodation from comfortable camping to stylish beachfront high-rises – no wonder visitors return year after year. Saturday and Sunday mornings have crowds flocking to the foreshore where the aroma of barbecue breakfasts mingle with salty air, the seagulls are delighted to join you and the al fresco coffee shops are full. On the way to Bargara from the city, take in the amazing view at The Hummock overlooking fields of sugar cane with the ocean to the east.
The famous Mon Repos turtle rookery just north is the location for a wall dating back to the very early days of settlement and constructed using Kanaka labour and rocks taken from the nearby sugarcane fields.
Bargara Beach - how it began
Bargara is considered by some to be a satellite town of Bundaberg with only cane fields separating the two centres. Between 1912 and 1948 a railway connected the two centres. It has grown significantly over the last decade, becoming a popular tourist and retirement destination. The Esplanade runs along Bargara Beach foreshore and lined with high-rise apartments and homes.
Prior to 1921 Bargara was officially known as Sandhills. The Sandhills Provisional School opened in 1893 and was renamed Bargara State School in 1921. The name Bargara is derived from the names of two adjacent localities, Barolin and Woongarra.

The home of the Loggerhead Turtles
Mon Repos Beach near Bargara, is home to the largest concentration of nesting Loggerhead Turtles in the South Pacific and is the most accessible rookery on our east coast and here’s the turtles’ own calendar of events: November – nesting season starts with the first Saturday when nightly Turtle Tours begin. Bookings are essential by contacting the Information Centre 1300 722 099. December – nesting season reaches its peak with tours running except for December 24, 25, 31. January – Hatching Season starts as the little guys begin to appear and scurry to the ocean with only one in 1000 surviving to come back to Mon Repos to breed. Even though the first babies are hatching, other mums are still laying their eggs in January. February – Hatching is in full swing. The tiny guys can be disoriented by bright lights with Bundy running the “Cut the Glow to Help Turtles Go” campaign so they head in the right direction, towards the sea. Late March – Turtle Time comes to a close. In 2012 the incredible marine creatures extended the season to April 9 while the season was brought to a premature end in 2013 due to the floods in January, followed by more heavy rains in February.

Burnett Heads at the mouth of the Burnett River has a population of over 2,000 people. Burnett Heads most notable feature is its historic timber lighthouse, the Old Burnett Heads Light, dating from 1873. The
structure, originally sited on South Head (the southern entrance to the Burnett River), was replaced by a modern structure in 1971; the original lighthouse was restored and moved to a local park off Mittelheuser Street. It includes the original Fresnel lens.

Take a drive in the country
www.TouristQueensland.com.au
Experience a real contrast to our coastal regions during a drive north to Gin Gin and Mount Perry, or head further inland to the North Burnett Circle. There’s also Monto and Cania Gorge National Park to include in your country weekend.
Gin Gin, 51 kms west of Bundaberg was the haunt of the Wild Scotchman, Queensland’s only authentic bushranger who was captured at Monduran Station with an annual re-enactment in March.
It’s an ideal rest stop when travelling between Brisbane and Rockhampton with Historical Society Museum, Art Gallery and Visitor Information Centre.
Nearby Lake Monduran provides a relaxing waterside location – popular for fishing and camping. The WIN Television Monduran Family Fishing Classic will be held on October 19 and 20.
Mount Perry is full of country spirit and check out the engineering marvel, the Boolbunda Tunnel carved out of pure rock without machinery, the 192 metre tunnel is the longest unsupported manmade structure of its kind in the southern hemisphere and National Heritage listed. Mount Perry is also home to events including Camel Cup, Dump Truck Pull, Woodchop and races.
Monto and Cania Gorge
For a day away or overnight stay, Cania Gorge National Park and picturesque Lake Cania is the ideal spot to view the unspoilt beauty of the awesome sculpted sandstone rock formations, such as Castle Mountain and the overhanging cliffs. Lake Cania has been well stocked with saratoga, bass, golden and silver perch plus more species occurring naturally.
Monto is popular with 4WD enthusiasts with around 1,000 km of roads to explore. Scenic drives extend from the Mulgildie Plateau to towering hardwoods in Coominglah Forest. Monto services include shops, supermarket, newsagency, chemist, hospital, medical, banking, fuel and post office.
North Burnett Circle
Rugged gorges, mountain ranges, rural views and towns offering real country hospitality – take the circle on the Burnett Highway (A3) as part of the alternate route from Brisbane to Rockhampton.
Gayndah, Queensland’s oldest town has plenty of reminders of its colonial history with Heritage Listed Mellors Drapery still using the only remaining “flying fox” cash transaction device. Their citrus is celebrated at the Gayndah Orange Festival held every oddnumbered year.
Mundubbera produces one third of the state’s citrus and is midway between Brisbane and Rockhampton at the meeting of three rivers ( Burnett, Boyne and Auburn). 32

Exploring the hinterland
RM Williams Bush Learning Centre.
Eidsvold – the RM Williams Australian Bush Learning Centre honours this great Australian, displaying his skills and achievements, bringing his passion for bush lore to life. Local aboriginal culture is reflected in the Centre’s Exhibition Gallery. The Chowey Bridge in Biggenden is one of only two of its kind in Australia, a concrete railway bridge built in 1905 and a popular picnic spot. Biggenden is proud of its roses featuring in the main street. Mt Walsh National Park is undeveloped and suits keen experienced bushwalkers and climbers while Coalstoun Lakes National Park’s twin volcanic crater lakes are a mecca for wildlife when filled with rain. Ban Ban Springs is situated at the junction of the Isis and Burnett Highways is a refreshing place to stop-over under the willow trees.
