A photograph of sunset at the Town of 1770 marking the site where Captain Cook stepped ashore in 1770. The Discovery Coast has long stretches of pristine golden sands, safe waters warm enough to swim in year round which are framed by a majestic rugged headland with sweeping panoramic views. From the Town of 1770 and Agnes Water the sparkling crystal clear waters of the Southern Great Barrier Reef beckon. Swim, snorkel or dive with accredited instructors in the protected coral cay and lagoons.
Tourism operators, businesses and the whole community are to be commended for showing remarkable resilience, determination and co-operation in recovering after the January 2013 floods to be on top of their game once more. We received hundreds of entries in our Fraser Island Kingfisher Bay Resort Whale Watching competition, and that’s not surprising considering what a fantastic prize which was won by Brianna Young of Nundah. Congratulations and thanks to all for entering. Spreading the word on Bundaberg. Michael recording radio promotions for this Bundy Book.

Mayor’s Message Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Cr. Mal Forman
On the way to the Bundaberg Rum Distillery it is worth pausing at the water tower in Sussex Street.
A sensational coastline exhibiting the diversity of rugged rocky shorelines through to kilometres of open sandy beach melding into a hinterland that captures the extraordinary mix of rural and residential lifestyles – welcome to the Bundaberg Region! With a population racing towards 100,000, the Bundaberg Region offers those lucky enough to call it home the liveability of the fifth most equitable climate in the world. The Bundaberg Region comprises the major city of Bundaberg with the communities of Gin Gin to the south west and Childers to the south. I am pleased to say that Bundaberg Regional Council is playing its required key role in creating opportunity, supporting initiative and partnering with government and private sector investment to deliver a solid economic future for the region. Council has been proactive in implementing strategies that promote investment with our Bundaberg Open for Development proposal providing incentives that has resulted in $17.5 million in additional projects and job opportunities in the past six months. Bundaberg has everything to offer young families through to retirees. Great education facilities including the local Central Queensland University campus ensure the best available learning centres for both private and public education opportunities. A selection of retirement villages across our region guarantees our elderly residents gain every consideration allowing them to retire in their home communities among family and friends.
This unusual eightstorey building is listed on the National Trust and is a landmark in East Bundaberg.

The Bundy Book
Bundaberg – the early days From the Sandhills to Bargara The first indigenous people in the area were the Taribelang with Captain Cook and his crew the first Europeans setting anchor in Bustard Bay, Town of 1770. Surveyor James Burnett led two expeditions on the river in 1847 with the first squatters William Forster and Gregory Blaxland who settled at Tirroan Station (now Gin Gin) in 1848. Co-founders of Bundaberg, John and Gavin Steuart were timbergetters camping on the present site of North Bundaberg Railway Station with other labourers including experimental sugar cane farmers following.
When you take your stroll along the boardwalk from The Basin to Nielson Park, take a look at the noticeboard at the entrance to the park, depicting the history of the Railway Picnic from the 1920s and other significant Bargara events. Photographs include famous aviator Bert Hinkler, visiting Bargara School children after his historic flight in 1928 (see if you can pick him out); the Roller-Skating Rink (1954) Siren Of The Surf beauties (1950s) Neilson Park Bathing Huts and much more.
In the first half of the last century can was cut using cane knives. Kanakas ( South Sea islander) workers were brought to Bundaberg from 1870s to 90s to labour in the fields, eventually numbering about 2300. After being a town since 1902, Bundaberg was officially declared a city in 1913.
Prior to 1921 Bargara was known as Sandhills with the School opening in 1893, later renamed Bargara State School. The name Bargara is derived from two adjacent localities, Barolin and Woongarra.

Born in Bundaberg Bert Hinkler, aviator extraordinaire was born on December 8, 1892 and put his hometown of Bundaberg on the map in 1928 as the first to fly solo from England to Australia. Bert is honoured at the Botanic Gardens at the Hinkler House Memorial Museum with the Hinkler Hall Of Aviation a must-see for visitors.
All good sports – born February 17, 1916, the late Don Tallon (above) was considered by many the best wicketkeeper of the 20th century with the Tallon Bridge over the Burnett River named after his family.
FREE
He represented Queensland Country against Douglas Jardine’s team in the infamous Bodyline Tour and played alongside Don Bradman as one of The Invincibles in 1948. Don was alert, agile and sure-handed with his stumpings subtle, almost surgical, seldom involving the removal of more than one bail. His widow Lynda lives in North Bundaberg; daughter Catherine is a solicitor and Jane, a professional cellist and music teacher. As well as “Australia’s Queen Of Song” Gladys Moncrieff after whom the Entertainment Centre is named, Molly de Gunst born in 1905, became a renowned soprano in England and her ashes rest in the Bundaberg Crematorium. Tenor, Donald Smith who joined the Australian Opera in 1958 received acclaim in the world’s great opera houses before going on to become one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century. Olympic swimmer Rosemary Lassig (now Lluka) born here on August 10, 1941,
won a Silver Medal in the 4 x 100m medley relay at the Rome Games in 1960. Teammates were Dawn Fraser, Jan Andrew, Marilyn Wilson and Rosemary also competed in the 200m breast stroke where she was eliminated in the heats.
Rugby League legend, Mal Meninga (above) was born in Bundaberg, July 8 1960. After attending schools in Monto and Maroochydore he returned briefly aged 11, to Walkervale School. Mal helped Queensland to win the first ever State Of Origin against New South Wales in 1980 by kicking seven goals from seven attempts.

Eco Resort tranquillity on our doorstep Lady Elliot Island is a 25 minute flight from Bundaberg Airport for your day trip or stay longer in the variety of accommodation – reef units right on the beach, family suites and eco-cabins. A coral cay, Lady Elliot is made entirely from crushed coral so bring comfy walking or reef walking shoes (also available for guests to borrow). Activities include snorkelling, diving, glass-bottom boat tours, fish feeding, beach volleyball, turtle and bird spotting, guided reef walks – or just breathe in nature and the ocean. With exceptionally clear water and healthy coral all year round you may encounter turtles, dolphins or a giant manta ray, but no marine stingers. For your complete tranquillity, there are no phones, TV or radio in the rooms and no mobile reception. WiFi and internet facilities are available as well as an Activities Centre with DVDs, board and card games. Meet up at the Lagoon Bar or Poolside Bar and Bistro and make time to visit the Education Centre to learn the fascinating history of this tranquil coral cay including who’s buried in the tiny cemetery, who Lady Elliot was and where you’re likely to see her ghost. Lady Elliot is the southern-most inhabited on the Reef and the 40 hectares can be walked around in less than an hour. www.ladyelliot. com.au

BARGARA
Beautiful Bargara Beach You’ll find this superb seaside destination 15km east of the Bundaberg CBD and the overflowing caravan parks during the winter months here are testament to its perfect weather – just ask the many visitors from southern states who escape the cold year after year in our sub-tropical paradise. Fine surfing beaches are Kellys and Nielson Park which are patrolled during holiday seasons and children are assured of safe swimming in the sheltered waters of Money’s Creek (at the southern end of Kellys) and the famous Kanaka-made family friendly pool, The Basin at the northern end. Accommodation choices range from the luxurious to the comfortable with everything in between – high rise apartments, motels, B&Bs, caravan parks and resorts – everyone is kept happy. Have a picnic or free barbecue along the Esplanade with plenty of room for the kids to play including the Turtle Playground and just over the road the breakfast/brunch brigade are out in force for their croissant and coffee hit. Schuhkraft Park is the new free fitness, nature-based play area alongside Nielson Park basketball courts, with fitness equipment, informal sports area, new walk paths and climbing frame. Designed to fit in with the landscape, a log washed up in the floods was integrated into the park. Enjoy a meal or cold beer from the Bargara Golf Club balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean or there’s the Bargara Hotel, Bargara Lakes Tavern or Bowls Club (live music on Fridays).
Kellys Beach.
Mon Repos Turtles – back in November Mon Repos Beach 15 minutes from Bundaberg’s city centre has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland and most significant loggerhead population in the South Pacific. Rangers at Mon Repos are thrilled with turtle and visitor numbers this year with 27,000 visitors from around the world watching loggerhead, green and flatback turtles lay their eggs and weeks later they watched as these eggs hatched. Turtle Watching Time begins in early November through to March when the hatchlings scurry out of the nest down to the ocean. These “grand old ladies of the deep” can travel up to 3000 kms to their traditional nesting beach every few years. Loggerheads begin breeding around age 30 with one of the oldest tagged at Mon Repos 60 years old. It is believed they live to about 100. Drive there or travel on the Turtle Express coach. If you intend coming to Bundaberg to see the turtles book early at www.bundabergregion.com.au, phone 07 41 53 8888 or www. bctours.com.au, phone 07 41 53 1037.

BURNETT HEADS
Burnett Heads the mouth of the Burnett River The town's most notable feature is its historic timber lighthouse, the Old Burnett Heads Light, dating from 1873. The structure, originally sited on South Head (the southern entrance to the Burnett River), was replaced by a modern structure in 1971 and is one of two Australian Cospas Sarsat satellite ground receiver stations. The original lighthouse was restored and moved to a local park off Mittelheuser Street. It includes the original Fresnel lens. In recognition of its lighthouses, Burnett Heads stages the annual Lighthouse Festival on the last Saturday in October. Coral Coast Pathways take you all the way from Burnett Heads to Kellys Beach, promoting a healthy lifestyle whether walking or cycling. Burnett Heads has a long seagoing heritage with a multi-lane boat ramp and no delays in taking to the water. Burnett Heritage Trail – winds from Oaks Beach via the former Pilot Station Reserve, taking in both the original South Head Lighthouse and the new taller automatic Lighthouse.

Accommodation includes beachfront camping and cabins, motel, bush huts each with a different theme plus stylish apartments with nothing between you and the beach but a vegetated wildlife reserve. Facilities include IGA Supermarket, bakery, hardware, speciality stores, mini mart, service station with great food and a good night out at Moore Park Beach Bowls Club (bistro Tuesday to Sunday) and Moore Park Beach Tavern (open seven days) When you want to get up and go, take your 4WD along the northern 10km of beach to the mouth of the Kolan River with only the occasional roofline seen from the beach – you’ll feel a million miles away from the daily grind.
Big plans for Elliott Heads This is the southern most of the local beaches at the mouth of the Elliott River surrounded by sugar cane and smallcrops farms. Unit and cabin accommodation is available, travel along Elliott Heads Road. At Elliott Heads, a major residential development, including a shopping complex has been approved to house up to 9,000 in the next 20 years. It is expected to increase both population and commercial activity Elliott Heads has swimming at the patrolled surf beach and it’s popular for kite surfing, jet-skiing while the fishing is good either from the shore or nearby reefs. Sandstone cliffs form an interesting headland and the rocky foreshore is fun to explore. A shady landscaped caravan park, picnic and bbq spots make this a great family holiday destination. Riverview is a tiny village nestled on the northern bank of the estuary but provides large scale recreational opportunities. Great for fishing with boat ramp and pontoon.
A relaxing stroll along Moore Park Beach.

WOODGATE
Woodgate Beach – endless shores, no crowds
Woodgate beach offers a stunning curve of white sand over 16 kilometres long, backed by a continuous sweep of shady she-oaks. The township offers a quiet and picturesque place to relax, unwind and enjoy a natural experience. The calm ocean waters are protected from strong swells by Fraser Island, and the shallow seas here are home to dugongs and turtles. The town is stretched behind the esplanade and is an eclectic mix of traditional 'Queenslander' style homes, 1950's beach shacks, modern homes and some more palatial designs. Kiosks, a restaurant, hotel and accommodation are located here. To the north lies Theodolite Creek - a breathtaking expanse of white silica sand perfect for swimming and fishing and to the south, Walkers Point - a small fishing village near the mouth of the Burrum River. Surrounding Woodgate on all landward sides is the Burrum Coast National Park - Woodgate and Kinkuna sections, preserving a rapidly disappearing snapshot of what much of the Southern Queensland coast once resembled. Low forests of heath, eucalypt, native cypress and banksias are sprinkled with still tea-tree stained lagoons and luxuriant cabbage tree palm groves. Boardwalks and walking trails lead from Woodgate through the park and for the more adventurous, Four Wheel Drive trails lead to national park camping grounds and secluded beachside picnic areas. The wildlife from the national park makes regular appearances in town kangaroos frequent the bowling green and emus make an odd sight as they wander along quiet streets. Rainbow lorikeets frolic amongst the trees and from July to November - the waterspouts of migrating whales are often seen offshore. The area is popular with families, birdwatchers, nature lovers, Four Wheel Drivers and those looking for a taste of old fashioned beach holidays, without the bright lights, high-rise and cafe strips.

Take the North Burnett Circle Rugged gorges, mountain ranges, rural views and towns offering real country hospitality – take the circle on the Burnett Highway (A3) as part of the alternate route from Brisbane to Rockhampton. Gayndah, Queensland’s oldest town has plenty of reminders of its colonial history with Heritage Listed Mellors Drapery still using the only remaining “flying fox cash transaction device. Their citrus is celebrated at the Gayndah Orange Festival held every odd-numbered year. Mundubbera produces one third of the state’s citrus and is midway between Brisbane and Rockhampton at the meeting of three rivers (Burnett, Boyne and Auburn). Eidsvold – the RM Williams Australian Bush Learning Centre honours this great Australian, displaying his skills and achievements, bringing his passion for bush lore to life.

Love me, love my dog Pet-friendly holiday destinations are in greater demand, according to research from Tourism Australia with the number of mature-aged travellers increasing at a much greater rate than younger people. Susie Chaseling from Pet Information Advisory Service re-inforced the knowledge that older people’s health, both physical and emotional can benefit greatly by the company of a pet. During road trips, it was found older people wanted to incorporate a healthy active lifestyle, including playing golf and exercising, a large part of which was continuing to walk their dog. (Over 53% of Australian households have either a cat or dog).
We have a Winner! BRIANNA YOUNG of Nundah, is off to see the whales in the calm waters of Hervey Bay with the compliments of Quick Cat II and BRIANNA has also won in our competition, three nights accommodation at Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island. The answers are Eliza Fraser, Turtles, Great Sandy Strait.
Congratulations to BRIANNA and thanks to all who entered.
Morris Maker finds the pathway at Oaks Beach, near Burnett Heads a great spot to walk his dog. Ms Chaseling said some pets can adapt surprisingly well to travel and options in the tourism accommodation industry are recognising the need to cater for those wanting to take their much-loved pets on holiday with them.
