Visiting from Edinburgh, Hilary MacRae enjoys lunch at Café 1928 at the Botanic Gardens, after visiting Bert Hinkler’s home and the Hinkler Hall of Aviation with another pilot, Alexander McRae of Bundaberg. Hilary and Alexander were dressed by Vovo Modelle and The Hut Menswear in Bourbong Street; hair by Red Poppy Hair Design, Kepnock Road. (Our thanks to Roger and staff at Café 1928).

Coastline Newspapers are expanding our Tourist Queensland publications into New Zealand. There are over 400,000 visitors from New Zealand coming to Queensland every year and the first edition for 2015 will be a supplement in the Auckland Herald. Later in the year there will be a Tourist Queensland for residents of the South Island.

On of the many floods in the Burnett River. This photo was taken during the 2013 flood. One lucky reader will be thrilled with a copy of renowned Bundaberg photographer Paul Beutel’s superb new 101 page book of Bundaberg’s devastating 2013 flood. Enter on page 13. We were pleased to have on work experience with us for this Bundy Book, Rebecca Markwell from Shalom College who penned some articles on Burnett Heads, Bargara and Moore Park – thanks Rebecca and best wishes for the future. Our new Bundy Year Book which was launched earlier this year was a huge success. It was home delivered into Bundaberg in early January. Another is planned for next year.

Enjoy your stay in the region and we would like to hear your comments.

Mayor’s Message

Fishing on Lzake Monduran near Gin Gin.

Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Cr. Mal Forman If you have just stepped off a plane, arrived by car or bus or as part of an organized visitor party may I extend the warmest of welcomes to you to the magnificent Bundaberg region. A sensational coastline exhibiting the diversity of rugged rocky shorelines through to kilometres of open sandy beach melding into a hinterland that captures the extraordinary mix of rural and residential lifestyles – this is an extraordinary part of Queensland! Setting foot anywhere in the 6500 square kilometers we identify as the Bundaberg Region is the first step to making lasting memories. With a population racing towards 100,000, the Bundaberg Region offers those lucky enough to call it home the liveability of the fifth most equitable climate in the world. The Bundaberg Region comprises the major city of Bundaberg with the communities of Gin Gin to the west and Childers to the south. You’ll find our region has that distinct laid back Queenslander flavour to it and it promotes a lifestyle we know is the envy of others. The Bundaberg Region has a perceptible vibe about it. It is a region ready to reap the rewards that ever-increasing investment and development will secure. It is a region growing on the back of community and investor confidence.

I am pleased to say that Bundaberg Regional Council is playing its required key role in creating opportunity, supporting initiative and partnering with government and private sector investment to deliver a solid economic future for the region. Our region has been a state leader in housing recovery and the plethora of franchised businesses seeking a base in the Bundaberg region is testament to the current and future viability of the region. Bundaberg has everything to offer young families through to retirees. Great education facilities including the local Central Queensland University campus ensure the best available learning centres for both private and public education opportunities. A selection of retirement villages across our region guarantees our elderly residents enjoy a great lifestyle while allowing them to retire in their home communities among family and friends. Bundaberg boasts a diverse range of shopping facilities with two major shopping centres and much more to come. Enjoy our great restaurants showcasing our sensational local farm produce through to the freshest daily catch from local waterways. Our parks, gardens and recreation areas are in pristine condition with Council promoting their use in achieving a healthy and active lifestyle. A delightful riverside walk can take you several kilometres to beautiful Alexandra Park where families enjoy Council’s emerging zoo facilities. Drop in and say “Hi!” to Kapali and Lowana, the new dingo arrivals at the Zoo. Bundaberg boasts many iconic visitor attractions including the Mon Repos Turtle experience; tours (and tastes!) of the famous Bundaberg Rum Distillery and Ginger Beer factory as well as superb facilities at Childers with Snakes Downunder and Flying High Bird Sanctuary must see attractions.

Best in Healthcare seeking the best.

An attraction of which we are truly proud is the Hinkler Hall of Aviation and Hinkler House. This tribute to a home grown hero and one of Australia’s and the world’s pioneer aviators is interactive, educational and is set among the beauty of the Bundaberg Botanical Gardens.

We invest heavily in the latest technology and innovation to deliver the highest standards of care. We offer the best training and support to our staff.

If you are a first time visitor I certainly hope the enthusiasm and passion I hold for our community is apparent. Welcome, and I know that once you get a taste of the Bundaberg Region you will be back for more!

A new exhibition, covering two gallery floors, has just opened entitled ‘Nothing New?’ by local artist Marlies Oakley. ‘Nothing New?’ features 22 framed images using thousands of used stamps to create stylised images. Mrs Oakley said “Each work takes a well-known image of a recognisable iconic figure from popular culture, history, music, fiction or the arts, so none of the images are in themselves new.” The collection, open now until May 3, is inspired in equal measure by The Queen, Andy Warhol and Anton Chekov. “Wind and Water – 2013 Bundaberg Flood” When Paul Beutel began a professional career in media photography 25 years ago, he didn’t envisage a major assignment would include capturing poignant images of the massive record-breaking 2013 flood that devastated his city of Bundaberg. Paul’s book Wind and Water - 2013 Bundaberg Flood contains 101 pages of superb photography, chronicling the devastation Mother Nature heaped on the region, which began with hugely destructive tornadoes at Bargara and Burnett Heads. “Aerial shots from my four separate helicopter flights provided a whole new perspective – both scary and exciting,” he said. “Being safely up in the air and watching the heart-breaking damage beneath; knowing I was photographing Bundaberg’s biggest news story was a surreal experience.” Filming from the ground brought Paul up close to the raw emotions and personal heartbreak suffered during the unforgiving onslaught. “Especially residents’ re-entry back into North Bundaberg, the hardest hit area – I saw a lot of broken people that day.” More information on how to purchase Paul’s book plus preview images www. paulbeutelphoto.com.au

Walk through history Soldiers War Memorial – a 7ft 6ins World War 1 Digger on a polished red granite column is sculptured from marble with the stone laid in 1920 by General Birdwood. Sir Charles Brand, originally from Bundaberg unveiled it in July 1921.

Stroll leisurely around the CBD and notice these brilliant old buildings, some heritage-listed and been standing since long before Bundaberg was declared a city just over 100 years ago. Payne, Butler & Lang Solicitors office is Qunaba House on the corner of Targo and Quay Streets. Erected in 1887, it’s our oldest commercial building, originally the Queensland National Bank. The name was also used for the Qunaba Sugar Mill when it was initially operated by the bank at Mon Repos. Post Office – the tower’s exterior has remained virtually unchanged since the opening in 1890. The ground floor features wonderful pillars and arches; upper floor is dominated by colonial verandas and cast-iron balustrades.

Former Commercial Banking Company of Sydney – corner Maryborough and Bourbong Streets is of colonial design built in 1891. Wide verandas are embellished with cast iron lace balustrades, shingled roof, louvred wooden window shutters and the small building at the back was a horse stable. Linden Medical Centre in Barolin Street was built in 1913 as the residence of Dr Egmont Schmidt whose father emigrated from Berlin. It was named for Lindenstrasse, an avenue of linden trees. A time capsule was placed in a wall during building and it’s been a medical practice since 1975. Burnett Dental Clinic in Barolin Strreet was built around 1911 by O J Gruter of German/Swiss descent. It has distinctive pressed metal walls (both inside and out) and adornments on the original façade are Dental Blocks, an example of ancient Greek architecture. Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Bundaberg’s first church opened on this site in 1875. The present church an adaptation of a Roman temple came some years later. The Anglican Church was built in English Gothic style with pointed arches, 34 metre tower with stonewalls, lichgate and wayside cross in keeping with the English custom.

Mon Repos Beach – not just for turtles! No doubt the amazing sea turtles that return to Mon Repos year after year have more in-depth biological reasons for choosing Mon Repos - but discerning beach-goers simply realise that this is a fantastic place to enjoy a day by, or preferably in, the deep blue rolling waves just begging you to dive in. It’s many locals’ favourite beach – for swimming, long beach walks, and famous aviator Bert Hinkler spent many happy hours here, testing out his glider. (he even named his English home “Mon Repos” after his favourite beach). The Kanaka Wall is a well preserved piece of history. Kanakas from the South Pacific Islands were indentured to work in the canefields from 1879 to 1904 and part of their work was to clear volcanic rocks to allow cultivation. The rocks were packed together to form fences and could be seen all over the district. Most have now disappeared with the rocks crushed as a base for road building. Mon Repos is only a short drive from Bargara.

Turtles will be back in November Mon Repos Turtle Encounters will commence again in November with mothers laying eggs to January and then the remarkable sight until March, of hatchlings hurrying across the beach into the sea. Guided Turtle Tours operate every night except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve with bookings at www.bundabergregion.info, phone 4153 8888.

OUR BEAUTIFUL BEACHES Bargara and Mon Repos are not our only terrific beaches. Spread out along the coast is a succession of beaches where visitors and locals go to relax and unwind. Between each of the beaches are volcanic rocks, remnants of the small volcano, The Hummock. These provide good fishing and dive locations as they’re an ideal base for coral and marine growth. The southern most beach, at the mouth of the Elliott River and surrounded by cane and small crop farms, Elliott Heads is 18 kms from the city, with access via Elliott Heads road. There’s a patrolled beach, boat ramp, and it’s popular for kite surfing, jet skiing and fishing from either shore or nearby reefs. The shady caravan park, picnic spots, BBQ and kiosk make it a great family holiday destination.

Innes Park & Coral Cove Barolin Rocks, three metres off the point is a miniature reef wonderland with coral and marine life, great for snorkelling and diving. Coral Cove located between Innes Park and Elliott Heads, had its beginnings in the early 90s when the Coral Cove residential and country-club estate was launched. Taking a stroll along Moore Park Beach.

Coral Cove’s coast is rocky, with a diving area to a fringing reef. The International Golf and Country Club has two to four bedroom rental villas, swimming pools and tennis courts.

Moore Park Beach On the northern side of the Burnett River with 16kms of sandy beach it’s perfect for swimming, walking or fishing and patrolled in summer. There’s a Bowls Club, Tavern, parklands with access to a great 4WD track.

Burnett Heads is located just north of Bundaberg, where the Burnett River meets the ocean. The coastal township is distinguished by two historic lighthouses, one of which the 'Old Burnett Heads Lighthouse” was built in 1873 and recognised by the National Trust as important to Australia's maritime history. Following its decommission in 1972, it was relocated to Lighthouse Park. Each October Burnett Heads plays host to the Lighthouse Festival where visitors celebrate the township and it's history. On the fourth Sunday of every month the Old Burnett Heads Lighthouse is open to visitors from 9am-12 midday with admittance by gold coin donation. The Turtle Trail stretches from Oaks Beach to Nelson Park and is a shared pathway for cyclists and walkers. This trail enables visitors to experience and enjoy the area's natural beauty and diversity. The Heritage Trail is brimming with history and begins at Oaks Beach and is part of the Turtle Trail winding its way through Pilot Station Reserve and concluding at Lighthouse Park. A History brochure for the trail can be taken from outside the Old Burnett Heads Lighthouse during its opening times. This brochure details some of the history of Burnett Heads and should be read during the walk along the trail. Burnett Heads was established in 1870 because of the lighthouse that would be constructed in 1873 to help guide ships into the Burnett River. A pilot station was built in 1871, the pilots would meet the ships outside the Burnett River and would guide them upstream. The station is now part of the Pilot Station Reserve.

WOODGATE / CHILDERS

Sandy shores and calm waters at Woodgate

A boardwalk in a Melaleuca swamp at Woodgate.

Sunrise over the beach.

Woodgate Beach is one of the region’s most tranquil locations 39kms from Bundy – an endless beach without the crowds and high-rises. A slice of paradise and one of our cleanest and safest beaches. Situated 25 minutes by road from the main northsouth highway at Childers, this friendly community of just 800 people with a relaxed lifestyle are proud to share some with visitors. Woodgate Beach is surrounded by Woodgate and Kinkuna sections of the Burrum Coast National Park. Stroll 16 km of sandy shore and calm waters protected by Fraser Island to the east. Walk or cycle the 6.5 km of pathways that trace the foreshore and discover wildlife on a walk along the National Park’s tracks. Stay a while in one of the campsites. Fish along the beach or in the nearby tidal creeks and rivers, or use the boat ramp facilities. Woodgate Beach offers a good range of accommodation to suit all budgets.

Cordalba Pub – did you know? In the heart of sugar cane plantation country, 13km north-west of Childers and 40km south of Bundaberg is the quaint town of Cordalba and if you call into the hotel here’s a bit of history. Former licensee Maude Sheehan was famous for her fiery temper matching her hair, kicking out troublemakers one of whom returned the next day riding his horse into the bar. Her nude portrait now watches over the public bar alongside a rare early Marilyn Monroe poster, which was retrieved from the town’s rubbish dump. It’s worth taking a turnoff the Isis Highway and the pub is also popular far and wide for its generous and delicious country-style lunches.

Take the North Burnett Circle Rugged gorges, mountain ranges, rural views and towns offeri real country hospitality – take the circle on the Burnett Highway (A3) as part of the alternate route from Brisbane to Rockhampton. Gayndah, Queensland’s oldest town has plenty of reminders of its colonial history with Heritage Listed Mellors Drapery still using the only remaining “flying fox” cash transaction device. Their citrus is celebrated at the Gayndah Orange Festival held every odd-numbered year, so this year’s is set for June 5,6. Mundubbera produces one third of the state’s citrus and is midway between Brisbane and Rockhampton at the meeting of three rivers ( Burnett, Boyne and Auburn). Eidsvold – the RM Williams Australian Bush Learning Centre honours this great Australian, displaying his skills and achievements, bringing his passion for bush lore to life.

Is it a creek or a river? Baffle Creek is an hour’s drive from both Gladstone and Bundaberg. It’s called a creek but it’s a 120km long river with a tidal reach of 35km and boasts being one of the few pristine waterways in SE Qld. The area is sparsely populated and there is little pressure on the fish stocks. It is arguably the best coastal river fishing in Southern Queensland. Baffle Creek has been identified by fisheries research as having the highest concentration of Mangrove Jack on the east coast of Queensland. Barramundi, flathead, bream, trevally, queenfish, grunter, trevally, prawns and mudcrabs can all be found in the river system. The area has some great bird and animal watching, not to mention kayaking, sailing, swimming, or you may prefer lazing around on the beach doing nothing. The area has been a holiday mecca for campers, fishermen and water enthusiasts for many years.

The Boolbunda Tunnel between Gin Gin and Mount Perry is 192 metres in rock, unlined and unsupported. It was constructed in 1883 and 1884 and was part of the railway line between Mount Perry and North Bundaberg.

This is a real contrast to our coastal regions and the area covers Gin Gin and Mount Perry, inland to the North Burnett Circle and down to the South Burnett region. Gin Gin, 51 kms west of Bundaberg is the ideal rest stop when travelling between Brisbane and Rockhampton with an Historical Society Museum, Art Gallery and Visitor Information Centre. Nearby Lake Monduran provides a relaxing waterside location – popular for fishing and camping. The WIN TV Fishing Classic is on October 18 and 19.
