Bundaberg City is the central hub of our region where you will find two major shopping centres and a thriving CBD.
Mayor’s Message
Council is investing capital in extending its zoo facility at Alexandra Park with the Park also home to recently resited Colonial Guns which have been a part of Bundaberg’s history for more than 100 years. The guns were a part of the Queensland Navy in the colonial days prior to Federation.
Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Cr. Mal Forman
A visit to Bundaberg is never complete without sampling some of our world famous Bundaberg Rum which is to be found at the Distillery where guided tours are available along with sampling opportunities.
If you are a first time visitor, “welcome”. If you are returning to the Bundaberg Region then “welcome back”. I appreciate this opportunity to share what locals already know and that is we live in one of the best locations in the world. Beside our fabulous climate, which is rated one of the most equitable in the world, we have an incredible array of natural beauty set amid the 6400 square kilometres we call the Bundaberg Region. Sweeping hinterland framed by the red hills and lush green of the cane and tree crops at our southern entrance at Childers to the charming rural township of Gin Gin (once voted Queensland’s Most Friendly Town) to the north, Bundaberg is surrounded by beauty painted from nature’s palette. Our coastline strip is regarded as one of the best in Australia with beaches at Bargara, Kelly’s Beach and Woodgate achieving international recognition. Bundaberg is also a great stepping off point to the Great Barrier Reef with Lady Elliott and Lady Musgrave Islands providing day trippers with a genuine taste of paradise. Our rivers and associated waterways are welcoming venues for boaties and recreational fishers while the coastline waterways stretching to the islands out from Bundaberg are in pristine condition and just beckoning holiday makers.
A land mark in East Bundaberg is the Barrel, home of the famous Ginger Beer. Take the opportunity to view the wonderfully interactive Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel - the home of Bundaberg Ginger Beer as well as the must see attraction of the Hinkler Hall of Aviation located in the beautiful surrounds of our Botanic Gardens. See also Bert Hinkler’s home dismantled at its English location in Southampton and reassembled brick by brick in Bundaberg. A fitting tribute to our world famous pioneering aviator! Bundaberg Regional Council also prides itself on providing and supporting year round community activities and events such as Bundy Flavours, Childers Festival, Chinese New Year, Crush Festival, New Year’s Fireworks and a host of sporting events that utilise our outstanding facilities. Tens of thousands of visitors arrive in the Bundaberg Region every year and many take the opportunity to invest locally. Bundaberg Regional Council is proactively encouraging investment in the region and its Bundaberg Open for Development initiative has been overwhelmingly successful in promoting growth across the region. If you want to know more about the Bundaberg Region ask a local or simply head to Council’s website at www.bundaberg.qld.gov.au and check our links to planning and development or to business Bundaberg.

Bert’s memorial unveiled in Italy A WORLD class memorial to Bert Hinkler was unveiled on August 2 at the site at Mt Pratomagno in Tuscany where he crashed 82 years ago. The memorial includes a propellor and plaque from the Royal Queensland Aero Club. Transportation of a large boulder from Mon Repos Beach where Bert practised glider flying, plus a piece of slate roof and floor nails from his England home (now relocated to Bundy’s Botanic Gardens) was coordinated by Kevin Lindeberg who visited the site in the 1970s. He was taken there by Gino Toichhioni, who found Hinkler's body more than three months after his death, after the mountain
snow had begun to melt. At the site, they tied a piece of cloth to a tree now grown to full height, with the cloth still tied to the top. Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman has written a letter which, along with the roof tile and nails, would be included in a time capsule at the memorial site to be opened in 100 years.

Bundaberg – the early days The first indigenous people in the area were the Taribelang with Captain Cook and his crew the first Europeans setting anchor in Bustard Bay, Town of 1770. Surveyor James Burnett led two expeditions on the river in 1847 with the first squatters William Forster and Gregory Blaxland who settled at Tirroan Station (now Gin Gin) in 1848. Co-founders of Bundaberg, John and Gavin Steuart were timbergetters camping on the present site of North Bundaberg Railway Station with other labourers including experimental sugar cane farmers following. Kanakas ( South Sea islander) workers were brought to Bundaberg from 1870s to 90s to labour in the fields, eventually numbering about 2300. After being a town since 1902, Bundaberg was officially declared a city in 1913.
Walk through history Stroll leisurely around the CBD and notice these brilliant old buildings, some heritage-listed and have been standing since long before Bundaberg was declared a city just over 100 years ago. Payne, Butler & Lang Solicitors office is Qunaba House on the corner of Targo and Quay Streets. Erected in 1887, it’s our oldest commercial building, originally the Queensland National Bank. The name was also used for the Qunaba Sugar Mill when it was initially operated by the bank at Mon Repos. Post Office – the tower’s exterior has remained virtually unchanged since the opening in 1890. The ground floor features wonderful pillars and arches; upper floor is dominated by colonial verandas and cast-iron balustrades. Soldiers War Memorial – a 7ft 6ins World War 1 Digger on a polished red granite column is sculptured from marble with the stone laid in 1920 by General Birdwood. Sir Charles Brand, originally from Bundaberg unveiled it in July 1921. Former Commercial Banking Company of Sydney – corner Maryborough and Bourbong Streets is of colonial design built in 1891. Wide verandas are embellished with cast iron lace balustrades, shingled roof, louvred wooden window shutters and the small building at the back was a horse stable. Linden Medical Centre in Barolin Street was built in 1913 as the
Holy Rosary Catholic Church (Pic: Ian Beattie) residence of Dr Egmont Schmidt whose father emigrated from Berlin. It was named for Lindenstrasse, an avenue of linden trees. A time capsule was placed in a wall during building and it’s been a medical practice since 1975. Burnett Dental Clinic in Barolin Strreet was built around 1911 by O J Gruter of German/Swiss descent. It has distinctive pressed metal walls (both inside and out) and adornments on the original façade are Dental Blocks, an example of ancient Greek architecture. Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Bundaberg’s first opened on this site in 1875 with the design an adaptation of a Roman temple. The Anglican Church was built in English Gothic style with pointed arches, 34 metre tower with stonewalls, lichgate and wayside cross in keeping with the English custom. School of Arts in Bourbong Street is the oldest public building still standing, built in 1888/89.

The Bundy Book
Bundy’s fresh food bounty We’re becoming well known for our beautiful fresh local produce and seafood and why not? Tomatoes, sweet potato, zucchini, chilli, ginger, beans, strawberries, avocado, gelato and our deliciously moreish macadamias.
Food tourism has recently expanded with this year’s free, inaugural Winterfeast Farmers Market showcasing local growers’ seasonal produce surpassing all expectations with many selling out within a couple of hours.
Trawlers bring in reef fish, scallops, bugs, prawns, spanner crabs and muddies – irresistible.
Sunday Soiree a gourmet degustation with local produce-driven menu was another huge success held in the Bourbong Street CBD.
Food, glorious food Our restaurants are good because they have access to some of the best ingredients nature can provide. Tomatoes, zucchini, chilli, sweet potato, strawberries, snow peas, beans grow abundantly. Lychees and melons are summer treats the locally grown pineapples are really sweet. Bundy’s trawlers bring in reef fish, scallops, bugs, prawns and spanner crabs and our muddies (mud crabs) are full of flavour and irresistible.
Going nuts Our region is forecast to become one of the world’s largest producers of delectable macadamia nuts. Family owned Macadamias Australia with 130,000 trees supplies the world’s largest food manufacturers as well as the snack, bakery, ingredient, retail and confectionary sector. In Bundaberg’s ideal growing condition, they harvest 2000 tonnes of “nut in shell” of the Australian native each year.
What could be better..lunch at Kacys by the sea at Bargara.

Burnett Heads – alive with history Lighthouse Festival where visitors celebrate the township and it's history.
Burnett Heads is located just north of Bundaberg, where the Burnett River meets the ocean. The coastal township is distinguished by two historic lighthouses, one of which the 'Old Burnett Heads Lighthouse” was built in 1873 and recognised by the National Trust as important to Australia's maritime history. Following its decommission in 1972, it was relocated to Lighthouse Park. Each October Burnett Heads plays host to the

Sheltered crystal clear waters offer spectacular snorkeling and coral viewing. You can enjoy the glass-bottom boat or guided island tours as you explore the lagoon. Baffle Creek – a top fishing spot The Baffle and its tributaries provide many kms of waterways for fishing, crabbing and boating. Many years ago small coastal steamers called at the Port of Baffle Creek picking up casks of tallow and stores for nearby cattle stations. Winfield on the southern side of the estuary is approximately 11 km off Rosedale Road. Half-way between Bundaberg and Gladstone is the Baffle Creek estuary system. It is rated as near pristine, one of the largest estuaries in Queensland and it is fed by large saltwater creeks.
The area is sparsely populated and there is little pressure on the fish stocks. Baffle Creek has been identified by fisheries research as having the highest concentration of Mangrove Jack on Queensland’s East Coast. Flathead, bream, trevally, queenfish, grunter, trevally, prawns and mudcrabs are prevelent and this year there are lots of barra.
