Lend Lease pulls out of Abbot Point by Sherry Barnes Construction giant Lend Lease decided late last month against going ahead with its bid for the multi-billion dollar expansion of Abbot Point coal terminal. “It lapsed for a whole series of reasons, including commercial drivers – there were different competing projects and potential expansions up there,” said Chief Executive Steve McCann. Felicity Wishart, campaign director for Australian Marine Conservation Society has welcomed the decision and said no-one should be developing the area less than 50 kms from the Whitsundays. “We’re relieved Lend Lease has seen sense and pulled out,” she said.

Signatures included: Friends of The Earth, Lock The Gate Alliance, Mackay Conservation Group, Abbot Point Action Group, Save The Reef, Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Cairns and Far North Environment Centre.

A major milestone for the Santos GLNG Project was reached when the 4.3 km under-sea tunnel under “The Narrows” off Gladstone, successfully connected Curtis Island to the mainland. Tunnelling began in April last year and the 100 metre, 277 tonne tunnel boring machine ( TBM) has been operated round the clock on its journey to the tunnel reception shaft on the Island. Named Rose-Ella by the children at Rosella Park State School the TBM also lined the tunnel by installing more than 21,750 pre-cast concrete segments.

Open letter urged “please withdraw” In October last year,The Fifth Estate announced that 36 environmental action groups had written an open letter to Lend Lease asking it to discontinue its involvement with Abbot Point. “We urge you to immediately withdraw from any further involvement with this project,” the letter reads.

The tunnel forms part of the 420 km gas pipeline route from the gasfields around Roma and Fairview to the liquefaction plant currently under construction on Curtis Island. Thiess’ General Manager Tunnelling, Steve Wille paid tribute to the crews who steered the TBM to Curtis Island. “It can’t be understated how complex the geotechnical conditions were for those guys and I’m extremely proud of the way they worked through those challenges and brought the machine home,” he said.

Don’t move your seat on the plane Airports should install bodyWe were an hour into an eight hour flight when I decided odour monitors to recline my seat. Seconds later the seatback flicked forward, hitting my head. Either the seat had malfunctioned or the person sitting behind me had kicked it. Turning in my seat, I peered over the headrest to be confronted by the small but unmistakably angry face of a tiny lady who from her sari and jewelry I judged to be Indian. She said nothing, just gave me a withering look I interpreted as meaning ``don’t move your seat!’’

Why do we have business class?

We went to Sydney a few weeks ago and arrived at the airport freshly showered. This placed us in a minority as our fellow passengers were a collection of malodorous singlet- and thong-wearers painfully ignorant of the cleansing properties of soap when combined with water. Instead of metal detectors, it would be a good thing if airports installed body-odour monitors that sounded an alarm when an intending passenger's armpits scored more than seven on a scale of ten.

I have great respect for women and my elders but as I was only attempting to tilt my seat halfway back, felt she was being unreasonable so I tilted it back again.

This would make for more comfortable flights as half of the passengers would be turned back, leaving an abundance of room on board for those of us who enjoyed bathing more than once a week.

Whack! I bounced forward, the kick to my seat back more forceful than before.

There was that one time when I might have failed the odour test.

I turned around again and gave her my ``stop being ridiculous’’ glare and she returned fire with her ``don’t tilt the seat’’ glare.

I’d bought a bottle of duty free rum and put it in my cabin bag.

I thought briefly of complaining but how do you tell a flight attendant that you are being bullied by a 50kg grandmother? The answer, of course, is that you don’t. Thus for the next few hours grandma and I waged undeclared war as I edged my seat back until it reached the halfway point and then – whack! – she’d sink in the boot like a rugby league goal kicker. It was one of the longest flights of my life.

Air travel is one of the great levelers which is why it can be so painful because no one particularly likes being leveled. Business class was invented so that people could escape being leveled.

Just before boarding I placed the bag on the floor too heavily and heard an ominous ``thwunk.’’ I then made my second mistake of the day and put my hand inside the bag and cut it on the broken bottle, which began oozing rum mixed with blood all over the floor. I ran to the washroom, dumped the remnants of the bottle in a bin and boarded the plane with my hand wrapped in paper toweling and smelling as if I had been drinking rum for a week.

The truly great leveler is a long haul international flight in economy class where several hundred people are subjected to an equal degree of misery and discomfort for 12 hours. Meanwhile at the front of the aircraft, 40 or so people are stretched out on beds nibbling smoked salmon and sipping French champagne. If you’ve never traveled in business class, this may not bother you. The trouble is that I have. I know how wonderful it is. Those passengers exist in another universe. It is one without queues, plastic airport chairs, claustrophobia and armpits. Rather than dreading the flight, the holders of business class tickets actually look forward to it. We’re going to France later this year and I’ve stated looking at fares. Business or economy? The Internet tells me I can fly business for around $8000 or economy for around $2500. Maybe if I stuff cotton wool in my nostrils I won’t notice the armpits.

Another 100% FIFO mine? Isaac Region’s Mayor Anne Baker wants BMA to state whether the proposed Red Hill Mine will be another 100% forced Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) workforce like Caval Ridge and Daunia. She said BMA needs to be clear on FIFO work practices and looked forward to Premier Campbell Newman keeping his election commitment in relation to FIFO. “In his election promises, Mr. Newman said that if the LNP was elected it would categorically rule out a 100% FIFO workforce for any mine: “It’s not acceptable to us,” he said. “We understand that fly-in fly-out has its place as a component of, and the answer to, providing the workforce… but a 100 per cent fly-in fly-out is just simply something we would not tolerate if we get into government.” (Daily Mercury, 20 July 2011). Mayor Baker said she now calls on the Premier to honour his election commitments when his government is assessing this project and any in the future. “While Council is not naive enough

to expect all employment to be sourced locally, if these work practices are allowed to continue, the population renewal for regional Queensland in particular resource communities will be threatened “Under a forced FIFO arrangement, they’ll never be given a choice to watch their kids play after school or join a volunteer community association. She said mining communities need population, economic growth and sustainability which will be threatened if 100% FIFO work practices are allowed to continue.

Council’s views will be considered Minister for State Development, Jeff Seeney said Council’s views will be fully considered when assessing the project and asked that they allow the decision to be made without political interference. Mayor Baker responded that Mr Seeney’s comments were “extremely disappointing”. “The future in Isaac is scary and the Red Hill EIS is the last opportunity to voice community concerns.” BMA claimed its predominately residential workforce proves its commitment to the region and said FIFO workforces are one part of the mix of their employment offerings.

“we’ll undoubtedly struggle”… Anne Baker

Boyne-Tannum’s new structure plan

Gladstone Regional Council agreed to undertake a structure plan exercise for Boyne-Tannum to inform the new planning scheme project currently being undertaken, appointing consultants Deicke Richards. The structure plan exercise will operate in a similar format to those run by Diecke Richards at Calliope and Agnes Water/Seventeen Seventy last year, to include a community vision session; design workshop with Councillors, Council Officers and State Agencies; and a final presentation to the community. Director of Planning and Environment, Leisa Dowling advised the Boyne-Tannum area had been identified as a location experiencing significant growth that would benefit from an enhanced strategic vision to coordinate this growth. The first draft of the new planning scheme is expected to be finalised for Council review by the end of June.

Mining Contractor Awards launched this year The inaugural Queensland Mining Contractors Awards, launched at the Bowen Basin Mining Club are a chance for companies to showcase their achievements and be recognised for the improvements they bring to the industry. Club Director, Jodie Currie said after a tough couple of years, standout contractors have adapted and delivered real outcomes for mining, exploration and production companies, especially in Queensland. “The idea for the Awards came from recognition of the fact that the best Mining Contractors do much more than complete projects on time and in budget,” she said. “They drive innovation in our Sector as they compete to get their projects completed safer, smarter, faster and more efficiently.” A range of categories will be open to recognise innovation that has led to better outcomes, including benefits to project costs, timeframes, product innovation, community or staff engagement and equal opportunity.

Category winners will be announced at a presentation dinner in Mackay next July. QME partners with BBMC A Judges Choice Award will also be presented as well as the QME best product launch during the Mining & Engineering Exhibition. Director of Reed Mining Events, Paul Baker said QME, an integral part of the Queensland mining sector can now contribute to a platform to highlight the great achievements of its contractors. “As the industry strives to achieve greater efficiency and better productivity it’s important to recognise and share the success stories contributing to the sector’s growth,” he said. Entries are not limited to the size of contracting companies or the scale of the undertaken project as long as it was completed between June 2012 and December 2013. Entries are open now at www. bbminingclub.com/awards and close on April 30.

Want a Lower Home Loan Rate?

Queensland Resources Council has released a guide to help long-distance commuters working in mining and gas operations. CEO, Michael Roche said they recognise that the lifestyle presents challenges for families and the guide provides valuable advice. “Times have changed and as our police force is finding, you can’t always expect families, particularly where there are dual careers, to pack up and move to remote or regional centres,” he said. “Our Workforce Accommodation Survey carried out by UQ’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, showed that people on long-distance commutes and those living near their workplace have equal satisfaction with their living/working arrangements.” He said the guide which follows on from that work aims to inform workers on what to expect and outline useful strategies to manage the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle. It outlines the benefits and challenges and identifies the social and personal factors that enable workers to adapt. Downloaded from the QRC website www. qrc.org.au, the Reference Guide contains a list of organisations to provide assistance and can form the basis of an induction tool to be used by HR professionals. Study finds families coping well A report released from the Australian Institute of Family Studies shows FIFO families are functioning equally well as

others with similar stress levels, relationship quality and health. Lead author Ellly Robinson said while long periods of solo parenting are challenging, most couples are making the arrangement work. The study credited mothers for their significant role in lessening disruption, and ensuring the health and wellbeing of children. Queensland and Western Australian have the biggest FIFO workforces in the country with about 31,000 employees in the Bowen and Surat Basins.

Yvonne and Trevor Hall from Bundaberg are enjoying the thrill of discovering the amazing places, some relatively unknown, throughout our vast and diverse state, on their 4WD Camper – Trailer adventures. Their latest find in June this year was Cobbold Gorge, a jewel in the Gulf Savannah crown. “We’d gone right to the tip of the Cape and seemed to be in the middle of nowhere with dried out pastures, when we stumbled across this gorge – so green and beautiful – like a hidden oasis with its amazing blue water,” said Yvonne. “It must be one of the best catered for holiday destinations of its kind with its own camping area for plenty of vehicles plus cabin accommodation. We’re fairly new to travelling off the beaten track and so glad we came across Cobbold Gorge.” To protect the unique environment, access is by guided tour only, bringing you the best of stunning scenery, diverse flora and fauna and rich cultural history. GasFields Commission Chairman, John Cotter has urged pipeline contractors to work with the onshore gas industry to improve transparency and provide greater clarity on land access when dealing with landholders and communities. Speaking at the Industry Association’s annual dinner in Brisbane, Mr Cotter said it plays a key role in Queensland building the energy highway like the three export pipelines connecting the Surat Basin to Gladstone. “Most contractors recognise that building a pipeline is not

just about engineering – it’s about people,”he said. “The biggest and most important challenge is land access and dealing with landholders and communities along the pipeline easement.” “I believe more can be done by gas proponents working with their contractors to provide greater clarity on land access including negotiation, operational matters and dealing with disputes.” He said the image and reputation of the pipeline industry and oversall onshore gas industry is

dependent on taking a whole-ofproject perception. “The rehabilitation of these pipeline easements will present a lasting image or legacy of the footprint created.” “Whoever owns and operates these pipelines have an ongoing responsibility to respect and engage with landholders and communities who through no fault of their own, have found themselves alongside these pipelines and have to coexist for many years to come,” said Mr Cotter.

Chifley at Lennons, re-branded as NEXT Hotel in the Queen Street Mall will also have completed its $50 million

revamp, doubling its rooms to 300 and updated to 4.5 stars. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said more supply meant realistic prices while Daniel Gschwind of Queensland Tourism said introduction of the much-needed hotels is the kind of growth and stimulation needed if Brisbane wants to attract big-name events and big-name visitors. Baffle adds X Factor to your coffee ….by Sherry Barnes Baffle Dairy, the 100% locally owned family business that commenced as a small dairy in 1993 is experiencing a long awaited upsurge in demand for their chemical free, biologically farmed, totally natural products from their content crossbred herd of Friesian, Jersey, Brown Swiss and Aussie Red. “Things are finally turning around with a big shift towards naturally produced, and the one that’s gone incredibly well is our Pure & Natural NonHomogenised with demand increasing by 150% - still with the cream on top, that’s how the cows make it, said owner Bruce Poulsen. “It’s been a long hard road since dairy regulation in 2000 dealt a savage blow to farmers.” He said competing with supermarket giants and generic brands was bringing the dairy industry to its knees, but continued awareness of the issue among consumers was helping local farmers fight back. Exciting find in Sapphire Gemfields Astounding even long-time locals, a 753 carat, blue-green sapphire was found in the Central Highlands Sapphire Gemfields by a fossicker. Wishing to remain anonymous, the lucky owner found his “Sapphire Princess” by specking (visually scanning the ground). It’s larger than a golf ball and believed to be the biggest sapphire found in the Gemfields for at least three years. CHDC Tourism Development Officer, Peter Grigg said it goes to show you can come to the largest sapphire gemfields in the southern hemisphere, get your hands dirty and walk away with a fantastic memento. “To the untrained eye it may look like a simple rock but knowing how many carats it weighs makes it easy

to be in awe. It’s amazing how it was found, no digging, no panning, no shovelling – just picked up off the ground.”

Flight delayed? What are your rights? Aviation Law expert with Shine Lawyers, Joseph Wheeler helps people who have incurred financial loss during their air travels While delays and cancellations are a constant dilemma for the international business traveller the only thing worse than wasted hours in an airport is the financial loss or missed opportunity that can result – a crucial or non-refundable event, accommodation deposits are lost, all hits to your hip pocket. Delays or cancellations – on international flights, a traveller who sustains financial loss due to flight disruption is entitled to up to $7, 524 from the airline is they can prove the costs incurred. There is no limit to the compensation you are entitled to, if the loss is because of an error or wrongful act on the part of the airline. The same goes

for domestic legs of international flights. If you are departing the European Union and your flight is cancelled you could be entitled to an additional $866. European Courts have at times decided that delays of longer than three hours may be classed as a “cancellation”. Downlands keeps families together

Sending children off to boarding school can be both emotionally draining and logistically difficult. The idea of coeducational boarding is appealing to many parents in this situation, as it means their sons and daughters are able to attend the same boarding school, and can continue to strengthen their family bond throughout their years of boarding together. Downlands College in Toowoomba offers co-educational boarding from Years 8-12, allowing brothers and sisters to spend

their formative years together - sharing meals, routines, friends and teachers, and also cheering from the sidelines for one another at school-based activities. With approximately 700 students enrolled at Downlands at least 240 of these are boarders. A new boarding house will open in September this year to cater for the introduction of Year 7. For more information, contact Anna Bartlett, Marketing and Development Manager, Downlands College on 07 4690 9661 or annabartlett@ downlands.qld.edu.au

Scholarship opportunities for rural families Every year the Cathedral School in Townsville offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for rural families and this year is no different. In 2007 a substantial sum of money was donated to the school by a pioneering family of the north. The money has been used to fund the education of selected students from rural and remote Queensland whose families may be struggling financially. A spokesperson for the family said the EHSB scholarship, named in honour of the family group - EylesHampe-Scholes-Buhôt, was a small way to help rural

families who couldn’t afford to send their child to boarding school. The EHSB scholarship is awarded on academic merit and financial need and will cover all tuition and boarding fees for the successful candidate from Year 8 to 12. Applications for the meanstested scholarship are now open to students commencing Year 8 in 2015. Enquiries regarding the EHSB, or other scholarships can be made to the Registrar, Mrs Toni Lanphier on 4722 2000 or by visiting the website www.cathedral.qld.edu.au/ scholarships.

Full time and weekly boarding – Whitsunday Anglican School

Whitsunday Anglican School provides fresh, modern facilities for their boarders to enjoy an educational experience based on security, stability and positive relationship building. The recent expansion to the facilities means that the school offers full time boarding as well as weekly boarding for students from the Mackay, Bowen Basin and further, reaching coastal and rural communities. A school boarding bus assists with the transportation of students to excursions and after school commitments during the week or on weekends. The school is now 26 years old, though boarding has been a significant part of the school’s make-up since it was introduced in 1994. The younger boarding students (beginning from Year 5) are housed in dorms of four but most students are offered single rooms with enough space to make it their own.

Whitsunday Anglican School offers 5 and 7 day boarding in a safe, home style surrounding High academic achievement is a strong focus for boarders 48.6% of students received an OP 1-7 Boarding in Years 5 to 12 New living and dining facili es Individual rooms Co-educa onal environment

Gayndah ready for massive growth 2014 looks set to be a beneficial year for Real Estate investors in the heart of Queensland’s citrus country. Edwina Randall of LJ Hooker Gayndah says that properties under the $200,000 mark have been selling quickly due to the lure of a high return as the demand for rental properties continues to increase year after year. “There’s always a demand for rentals as the farming and citrus industries bring employment while the relaxed family atmosphere attracts families” said Edwina. Besides citrus, the North Burnett has extensive agriculture pursuits including beef, pork, fodder crops, mining (gold), timber and horticultural crops.

There is an exciting new Bauxite project on Gayndah’s doorstep which is set to bring massive growth to the region. Australian Bauxite has discovered over 100 million tonnes of high quality Bauxite with a worth over 6 Billion dollars (refer to australianbauxite.com.au).

Remaining open to the public for another year, the gaol is in the care of historian and tour guide, Jack Sim to manage the public spaces and provide educational, cultural and commercial activities. Minister Housing and Public Works, Tim Mander said it’s impossible not to be drawn in by Jack’s passion for Queensland’s history. “In the past people were desperate to get out of Boggo Road, these days they’re desperate to get in, which is testament to the hard work of Jack and his team,” he said.

More than 12,000 visited the gaol over the past 12 months and Jack is pleased he can continue to share his love of one of Brisbane’s most iconic sites. “The key is to ensure the building remains relevant and accessible; our monthly historical tour is done by former Prison Officer and a former inmate,” said Jack. “We plan new events with some ideas being a Prison Film Night and Crime Writers Convention.” Information at www.boggoroadgaol. com

Ben Whitmore from Surfing Queensland. “The Triple Crown prize on Hawaii’s North Shore has become as important, if not more so, than a World Title for local competitors, so it’s great we can bring the same concept to the Capricorn and Discovery Coasts in 2014.”

The Triple Crown is designed to help develop the sport while unearthing and rewarding local talent in the northern region.

Surfers need to compete in all three events and the Champions will be crowned at the Yeppoon Surfing Festival on April 5, 6 with more information on www.surfingqueensland.com

holiday hot spots... The Coast under the Tropic of Capricorn

Visitors to the Coast enjoy golden days and balmy, moonlit evenings with the brilliant sunsets and scents of the tropics as well as the crispness of a temperate climate. The Coast is under the Tropic of Capricorn, for which it is named, and it sweeps along the Pacific Ocean at Central Queensland just a 30 minute drive from the Beef Capital of Australia, Rockhampton, and only 600 kilometres from the capital, Brisbane. You can still enjoy a beach to yourself at the Capricorn Coast with views of Great and North Keppel Islands and the many smaller islands, which act as stepping-stones to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Great Keppel Island is a popular island to visitors and is accessible by a 30-minute ferry ride. Ferry services operate daily out of Rosslyn Bay. Yeppoon is the Coast’s major town, which has retained its village style appeal, yet offers a variety of wonderful restaurants, accommodation and shops. Just north of Yeppoon is the Capricorn Resort, set on 22,000 acres of nature and offers two world standard golf courses, whilst to the south at Zilzie, the Reef Palms Complex offers night-time golf with a floodlit course, featuring a world-first -

synthetic golf course. The beaches along the Capricorn Coast are touched by the legacy of Captain James Cook. Emu Park, the second largest town on the Capricorn Coast, has honoured Cook’s exploration with a monument, the famous ‘Singing Ship’, a soaring white sculpture with Great Keppel Island as a back drop. Lammermoor, Kinka, Mullambin and Kemp beaches, Cooee Bay and the Causeway Lake, all line the Capricorn Coast offering many pleasures, wonderful accommodation and so much beauty you will never want to leave.

Clive Palmer turning movie mogul? The mining magnate and Federal Member for Fairfax, who is building a replica of the ill-fated Titanic is tempted to make a cameo appearance in a new film he also wants to make aboard his new ocean liner. Late last year he tweeted that he had registered Palmer Pictures intending to make a movie about the tragic maiden voyage in 1912 with its premiere to coincide with his new ship’s maiden commercial voyage from

Southampton to New York in 2017. He told media it will be a love story and a lot better than the 1997 movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, with actors from Hollywood and Europe expressing interest in starring roles. “I could be seen in a deckchair having a drink,” he said.

Pictured is how the original Titanic compares in size to one of today’s cruise ships.

Fishing with Foxie BY JOHN FOX

Enjoy the great fishing that Qld has to offer Northern and Central Queensland are blessed with some of the best fishing in Australia and now is a good time to wet a line. Offshore there are plenty of good reef and pelagic fish being caught along the inshore and wider reefs. Trout, sweet lip, red emperor are all on the bite with fresh squid or fish flesh being the pick of the baits. Jigging soft plastics for these species has become popular and can be very productive but is a lot harder than drifting out bait and waiting for a bite. Some nice Spanish mackerel are being caught on the troll with the best trolling bait being ribbon fish. Floating a live yakka out the back of the boat while bottom fishing is also a good method to catch Spanish and you never know you might even hook into a cobia.

A couple canoeing in Eungella National Park Take care in the area as people have died in accidents and many more have been seriously injured. These incidents are specifically due to slipping on the wet slippery rocks and steep wet slopes.

The lakes of central and northern Queensland like Peter Faust, Teemburra, Kinchant and Eungella are all fishing well. Metre plus barra have been common taken both on the troll and by casting. Like most fishing early morning and late afternoon are the peak fishing times. Have a cast with some suspending lures using a twitch and pause retrieve along the lily pads. Late afternoon and into the night try trolling deep diving lures in the basin areas of the lakes. If you are chasing barra, salmon, queen fish, and trevally a good spot to fish is the along the colour change line where the muddy water meets the clear water. This can occur from run off from rain around the mouths of the rivers and creeks or where smaller creeks and gutters empty into the rivers on the run out tide. Trolling the edges of these area’s with shallow running lures like Reidy’s B52’s, Classic F18’s and Gold Bombers will see you hooked up to good fish.

If you notice big fish smashing baitfish along the line, anchor up or try drifting around and cast a few surface lures around.

Using surface lures

When using surface lures try to use a lure that matches the size of the of the bait fish being chased. If it’s Popeye Mullet use a similar sized popper, if there are whitebait or smaller baitfish around try a chrome slug or small walk the dog style lure. The mouths of small creeks and run off gutters are also the best spot to look for a feed of prawns or live bait on the run out and a few throws with a cast net is well worth the effort. Mangrove Jack around the snags and rock bars always provide good fun and plenty of action. If you are going to bait fish for them try live bait such as large prawns or mullet and sometimes fresh mullet flesh is better. I like to use a strong 7/0 wide gap circle hook on both live and flesh baits as I find I get a better hook up rate. Soft plastics rigged snag- less using a TT Area 51 Snake Heads jigs is the way to go. By using this set up you can cast your plastics well back into the snags or rock bars where the jack are holding up without the fear of snagging up all the time. Don’t forget if you’re heading down the estuaries take a few crab pots as there are a few muddies getting around at the moment. All in all fishing should be great over the next month so get out there, relax, explore and enjoy the great fishing that this part of Queensland has to offer. Win a double pass to the Brisbane Tinnie and Tackle Show. Send us your best fishing photo. Go to page 20 for all the details.

Dam fishing requires a stocked impoundment permit and if deep-sea fishing is more your style, choose from the reefs just offshore or around the nearby islands. Mackay is situated in a unique position at the meeting point of northern and southern fish species, so anglers have the best of both worlds.
