Lend Lease pulls out of Abbot Point by Sherry Barnes Construction giant Lend Lease decided late last month against going ahead with its bid for the multi-billion dollar expansion of Abbot Point coal terminal. “It lapsed for a whole series of reasons, including commercial drivers – there were different competing projects and potential expansions up there,” said Chief Executive Steve McCann. Felicity Wishart, campaign director for Australian Marine Conservation Society has welcomed the decision and said no-one should be developing the area less than 50 kms from the Whitsundays. “We’re relieved Lend Lease has seen sense and pulled out,” she said.
Signatures included: Friends of The Earth, Lock The Gate Alliance, Mackay Conservation Group, Abbot Point Action Group, Save The Reef, Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Cairns and Far North Environment Centre.
A major milestone for the Santos GLNG Project was reached when the 4.3 km under-sea tunnel under “The Narrows” off Gladstone, successfully connected Curtis Island to the mainland. Tunnelling began in April last year and the 100 metre, 277 tonne tunnel boring machine ( TBM) has been operated round the clock on its journey to the tunnel reception shaft on the Island. Named Rose-Ella by the children at Rosella Park State School the TBM also lined the tunnel by installing more than 21,750 pre-cast concrete segments.
Open letter urged “please withdraw” In October last year,The Fifth Estate announced that 36 environmental action groups had written an open letter to Lend Lease asking it to discontinue its involvement with Abbot Point. “We urge you to immediately withdraw from any further involvement with this project,” the letter reads.

The tunnel forms part of the 420 km gas pipeline route from the gasfields around Roma and Fairview to the liquefaction plant currently under construction on Curtis Island. Thiess’ General Manager Tunnelling, Steve Wille paid tribute to the crews who steered the TBM to Curtis Island. “It can’t be understated how complex the geotechnical conditions were for those guys and I’m extremely proud of the way they worked through those challenges and brought the machine home,” he said.
