Nebo to host Melbourne Cup Nebo has been chosen as one of the 34 successful destinations to host the Emirates Melbourne Cup on its three month Australasian journey. The $175,000 trophy arrives on Monday July 29 among a range of events to unite the community and raise funds for local causes. VRC Chairman, Michael Burn said this year a record amount of tender applications was received and congratulated Nebo in being selected for its efforts. The 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup was launched in a hot air balloon overlooking Flemington racecourse, and joined by winning jockeys, trainers, racing
personalities and children with their Shetland ponies. Commencing in July, the Queensland leg of the journey includes the far north gulf country to Rockhampton, Karumba, Herberton, Longreach, Nebo, Brisbane, Quilpie, Dalby and Beaudesert. Since 2003 the Cup has travelled more than 325,000 kms, visiting more than 236 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations. The Cup’s three handles symbolises the relationship between the winning jockey, trainer and owner. Its timber base is hand turned from Australian Wattle and the traditional base for every Melbourne Cup.

GVK Hancock and Thiess sign up for Alpha Coal Mine... By Sherry Barnes Development of the Alpha Coal Mine in the Galilee Basin is a step closer with GVK Hancock announcing Thiess as preferred mine operations contractor. Thiess had successfully undertaken the operations for the Alpha bulk sample pit initiated by Hancock Prospecting in 2010. Thiess Managing Director, Bruce Munro said as a greenfield project, Thiess and GVK Hancock will take innovation to another level in Alpha’s operational development, embedding industry leading technology and best practice from early planning stages. Executive General Manager Michael

Wright said the next six months are critical for Thiess and GVK Hancock to work together to reinvigorate Australia’s position as the world leader in safe and highly productive operations. “This means resetting the paradigm on everything from plant and equipment, local sourcing to robust employee relations – it’s about setting the tone for what will be Australia’s largest coal mine,” he said. Alpha Coal Mine is located in the Galilee Basin with first coal to be extracted by 2016. When fully commissioned it will produce 32 million tonnes of thermal coal per year for the Asian export market.

What will be Michelle Landry’s Representative Style? address the issues raised. The best help has to be recruited to address the concerns.
Michelle has been around politics for long enough to know that being a representative is not just about taking a seat in our parliament, giving speeches and asking prepared ‘Dorothy Dixer’s’ in Parliamentary Question Time. It may not be well known, but our current Rep. (Kirsten Livermore) has been regarded in Canberra as a strong and effective parliamentary performer – unfortunately this has not been seen as being an ‘in touch’ Capricornia representative by many, if not most, of the electorate!
As she has already demonstrated over the last eight months since her pre-selection by the LNP as candidate for the seat of Capricornia, her campaign office has been her car; her primary contact has been her mobile phone and her diary has been her best friend. Her phone and email have been her best tools to respond. She is always accessible and always responsive to those who contact her with concerns. In campaign mode, her support team have had great difficulty keeping up with her! This bodes well for CQ if she can keep up this approach.
It is Michelle’s strong belief that being a representative is an honour and is truly an expression of her electorate’s desire to have her in the position of trustee of her constituents in the big picture national forum that Federal Parliament is. To do this, one has to be a good listener. One has to be intimately involved with and interacting with her community, her future electorate. One has to understand first hand what the collective concerns are. One has to be ‘in touch’!
Michelle does have personal opinions about many issues. She is not a ‘Yes Man (Woman)’. The LNP general philosophies and policies closely fit with who she is but do not stifle her. She is keen to be a local champion. She will be a hard-core locally focussed CQueenslander.
Once this is achieved, research has to be done, questions have to be asked of those who can help, networking with political and community colleagues undertaken to form opinions about and strategies created to

“Sisters In Mining” are trail blazers
...by Sherry Barnes Ten indigenous women from Rockhampton and the Blackwater region are the first graduates of the Oothungs (sisters) in Mining program, designed to launch their careers in mining at the Wesfarmers Curragh Mine near Blackwater. Their graduation ceremony was the culmination of the partnership between the Salvation Army’s Employment Plus, Wesfarms Curragh and Thiess. The ten women with no mining experience trained in a classroom environment, completing a program in the advanced haul truck simulator, and are now ready to enter operational
roles as trainees; six with Thiess, four with Wesfarmers Curragh. Thiess General Manager, Douglas Thompson said the combined expertise of the program’s partners had produced an outstanding result for diversity in the mining industry. Kirrilee Trist from Salvation Army Employment Plus said every day they see how people’s lives, families and communities are transformed by sustainable employment. “Support from organisations like Thiess and Wesfarmers Curragh is fantastic and we look forward to seeing how these talented, motivated graduates progress from here.”

Isaac’s issues gain Waratah Coal’s backing at NGA status confirmed in Canberra ...by Sherry Barnes IRC delegates in Canberra saw their two motions concerning water security and responsible FIFO work practices unanimously endorsed by the National General Assembly. Mayor Anne Baker said it was a huge relief, paving the way for successful FIFO/DIDO workforce practices and benefits across Australia, not just at the local level. “It will see social, economic and infrastructure policies and funding challenges addressed to ensure responsible and sustainable practices,” she said. IRC’s second motion called on the ALGA to consult with federal and state governments with mandates to supply water to local government areas, develop sustainable supply strategies for regional industry and community growth, and support regions experiencing water security and reliability concerns. IRC Chief Executive Terry Dodds said he is grateful to the IRC team
who had worked tirelessly on both issues. “This excellent outcome will result in more investigation at a federal level to assist government at all levels to update policy, process, implement and develop sustainable planning strategies across the nation,” he said.

The federal government renewed its support for the proposed $8 billion China First coal project, granting MPF status to Waratah Coal owned by mining magnate Clive Palmer. He plans to build a thermal coal mine in the Galilee Basin with the capacity to produce up to 40 million tonnes a year over a life-ofmine of 25 years. The mine would be linked to a new coal terminal at Abbot Point by a 453km heavy-haul railway line. Mr Palmer said establishing the mine and associated infrastructure would create 6000 jobs during construction and 1500 during operation. Waratah Managing Director, Nui Harris told Mining Weekly the China First
development had already been declared a significant project by the Queensland government and the renewal of its MPF status was a major step forward. “The China First development will open up a massive new energy resource in the Galilee Basin and benefit both the Queensland and national economy.” “Mining is a patient game and it always will be”…Clive Palmer

OUR GROWERS TAP INTO CHINA’S GREAT THIRST Central Queensland growers are enjoying the benefit of the Chinese penchant for a distilled drink called Baijiu, whose principal ingredient is sorghum. This follows the Chinese Government decision some time ago to allow import licences for up to 400,000 tonnes of sorghum, or at least a quarter of the Australian crop. Thus, sorghum prices have been boosted to well above the long term average and look like staying remarkably firm throughout the current Central Queensland harvest. While bulk shipments of sorghum go out of Gladstone or Mackay, bound for Japan, the Chinese sorghum mainly goes out of Brisbane in containers. So what is this Baijiu? It’s clear, distilled, potent, and more than an incredible four billion litres of it were sold in 2010, mainly by and in China. A 250ml bottle of low-grade Baijiu sells at about the same price as a can of beer, but higher, aged grades can sell for as much as $3,000. And taste? It can vary quite a bit, as the price might indicate, but it’s been around for more than 2,000 years so it must have something going for it.
However, for newcomer-travellers to China and its Baijiu beverage, it may pay to hasten slowly. The cheapest Baijiu has been described as tasting like paint-thinner. For the present scribe, it brought back the story of the early NZ days when illegal home-brewing was causing so many cases of illness and death that the authorities had to agree to non-penalty testing of any bottles of home brew voluntarily forwarded to the Agriculture Department. Urban myth has it that one such specimen came back with the department’s finding: “This horse should be put down immediately.” . *******
Cattle prices are down, down, down, the live cattle trade with Indonesia doesn’t look too flash, and the drought’s bad in western and northern Queensland, so what’s a cattleman to do? Yep, go buy, buy, buy. At least that’s the
audacious thinking of Cloncurry’s millionaire pastoralist, Tom Brinkworth, who’s just made the largest cattle purchase (18,000 head} by an individual in recent memory. Now he’s deep into the massive droving operation involved in getting those cattle moved on foot 1500 kms from Longreach to Hay, in southern NSW. He’s using the old stock routes in just the same way that one of his heroes, the legendary cattle king Sidney Kidman, did so many years ago. Altogether, the 1800 cattle have been split into nine mobs, with the first lot on a journey expected to take five or six months. At the Brinkworth property at Hay they’ll be sorted into lots that will go to other Brinkworth properties in NSW and South Australia. The massive purchase was brokered by Elders, whose spokesman said the reclusive pastoralist had a history of getting the timing right in his stock purchases. ******* He’s retired now, but Sir Llewellyn Edwards still has a fund of good stories about the 1970s days when
he served in the Bjelke-Petersen government. He revived one in a recent magazine interview he gave and in case you missed it, I think it worth a repeat. Joh got Llew to a meeting with Milan Brych, a Czech refugee who claimed to be medically qualified and to have a cure for cancer. “He can’t get registration in Queensland,” Joh told Llew. “Register him straight away. You’re the Health Minister.” Llew replied, “Joh, the Medical Board registers people and they answer to me, but I can’t register anyone.” Joh said, “Change the Act!” “No, I won’t do that.” Joh: “You’re fired!” So, goes on Sir Llew, “I rang the Liberal leader, Gordon Chalk. “Take no notice, son,” said the party leader, “He fires me every week.” ******* All that oily intrigue and preposterous power-play in Canberra of recent days recalls the words of a French politician, one Maurice Barres: A politician is an acrobat---he keeps his balance by saying the opposite of what he does.

Education Choices 2014 Ring the bell! RGS makes Top 50 The Rockhampton Grammar School has achieved two Top 50 positions in The Australian’s recently published national report on school excellence. The School listed among the Top Country Schools in Australia as well as among Queensland’s Best Secondary Schools. “It’s the School environment, the partnerships we have with parents, the dedication of teachers and ultimately the students who push themselves to do their best at every opportunity – together they are achieving wonderful things every day, said Headmaster Dr Phillip Moulds. It’s the second year The Australian has published its findings and the second year Rockhampton Grammar has achieved Top 50 rankings.

Fraser Island Provides A Fun Learning Environment The world’s largest sand pit makes a pretty interesting outdoor classroom – there are 1840 square kms of sand tracks to explore; it is one of the only places that rainforest grows in sand at elevations of 200 metres; it supports a fresh water aquifer that is approximately 40 times the size of Sydney Harbour and it is home to Australia’s purest strain of dingo. Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Kerry Brough, said interpretation of the environment was the key tenet of the resort’s environmental philosophy – so the development of a formal curriculum-based education program was the next logical step for the resort group.
“By combining the knowledge base of our Resort Ranger team with teacher’s curriculum requirements, we are able to deliver a custommade program for students covering topics from Biology and Environmental disciplines as well as Hospitality, Leadership and Team Building from just $49 per student a day, she said. Another Abbott for Kevin to oppose …by Sherry Barnes Following Labor’s support in the Senate of a Greens motion to stop Reef dumping, Senator Larissa Water, Australian Greens environment spokesperson urges them to follow through the apparent change of heart by rejecting the dredging and dumping for the Abbot Point expansion. “As a Queenslander, there’s another type of Abbott for Kevin Rudd to oppose as the Abbot Point project risks our $5 billion Reef tourism industry and the 54,000 jobs that rely on a healthy Reef,” she said. “Labor has left it too late to change the law to prohibit Reef dumping before the election, but the Environment Minister can still reject the proposal sitting on his desk to dredge and dump at Abbot Point near the Whitsundays, planned to become the worlds largest coal point.” Senator Waters said the coal port would increase
our contribution to climate change with the exported coal destined to intensify the extreme weather events familiar to Queenslanders. “The Greens are standing up for the Great Barrier Reef against the big mining companies with a policy of no new Reef dumping or dredging.”

“Sugar” exhibition recognises South Sea Islanders An exhibition reflecting on the contribution of South Sea Islanders to the sugar industry is showing until October 7 at Gallery Of Modern Art. It is part of the Cultural Precinct’s program “Memories from a Forgotten People” taking place until November across QAG, Queensland Museum and State Library. A selection of historical images also features with stories and music clips by members of the South Sea Islander community. Queensland’s early sugar industry depended on cheap labour by Islanders recruited from across Melanesia between 1983 and 1904. On Friday August 16 at GOMA, a free Perspectives Asia seminar entitled “Blackbirding, South Sea Islanders and seasonal workers; Historical Memory and contemporary justice across the Pacific” will be presented by the Vanuatu Minister for Lands, Hon Ralph Regenvanu and journalist and researcher Nic Maclellan. On August 17 from 3.30pm there
will be a free performance by South Sea Islander singers and song-writers. More information qagoma.qld.gov. au/sugar

Charmed life of a professional cowboy …by Sherry Barnes Larry Cann’s own Mama obviously didn’t take Willie Nelson’s advice because her baby did indeed grow up to be a cowboy, living out a dream career which has combined his loves of rodeo, country music and radio. “It doesn’t get much better,” said singer, songwriter, DJ, rodeo caller and former professional bareback bronc and bull rider – but it did. Last month marked the end of an era for country music radio in Australia, with his departure as announcer and director of Kix Country Radio. Joining Bundaberg Broadcasters in 2001, Larry developed his concept for KIX Hot Country Radio heard on stations throughout Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales. His dedication and talent was acknowledged with an international award from the US based Country Music Association for best Country Broadcast Award, the biggest for country music announcers outside the USA. He also won the Australian People’s Choice Award for Favourite Country DJ. Turning an exciting new page Larry is leaving to pursue a new career path in the Rodeo industry – announcing, marketing and broadcasting. “I’ve been offered to help the sport I love, rodeo, both in promotion, TV production and announcing, along with pursuing my own rodeo flavoured singing career – a very exciting new direction in my life,” he said. “My position with Big Screens Australia involves rodeo/bull ride production manager, with a TV program spotlighting this extreme family sport which looks to be marketed domestically and internationally in NZ, Canada and the USA.”
The Coalfields Express newspaper with a circulation of 25,000 copies is home delivered into most of Queensland mining towns.
Bundaberg Broadcasters General Manager, Trish Mears said Larry had made a tremendous contribution to promotion and appreciation of country music in Australia. “This opportunity is too good to miss, incorporating his love for rodeo with travel and his music career – we thank him for the amazing work he has done for over 10 years”. Three generations of cowboys Born in Chinchilla, Larry’s father was a guitar-playing rodeo rider; his mother a high school teacher with a double music major. “My brother also competes in rodeo along with my younger son – three generations of cowboys,” he said. A Rodeo Scholarship took this singing cowboy to Montana and Wyoming; and when his other love took over, he graduated with a music degree from Rogers University, Oklahoma. Look out for Larry at a rodeo near you soon. “Those who know me know I’m always on the road and this won’t change, so we’ll definitely see each other somewhere soon – take care and keep it country.”
Combining all his loves – Larry Cann

Seeking answers over Kagara Mining Contractors left out of pocket after the sale of Kagara Mining on the Atherton Tablelands need answers after media coverage unveiled alleged improprietities, KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter has warned. Kagara which went into voluntary liquidation last year, sold assets which included a resources and processing plant at Mt Garnet south west of Cairns plus permits for sites on the outer Tableland, to Snow Peak Mining an investment group based in Hong Kong. Mr Katter said articles in the southern press concerning a possible unhealthy link between Kagara, the liquidators and regulators, ASIC are extremely troubling. “God forbid the day when politicians interfere but we think the proper authorities should be looking at this case,” he said. State Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said creditors are desperate for answers as businesses and livelihoods face an uncertain future. “I am absolutely determined that the grave losses suffered by contractors must be looked at and I will not rest
We get around
until that happens – these are people who put their life savings into Kagara and these are the ones that are being done over.” Mr Katter said he did not want to pass judgement on rights or wrongs of these issues but “there absolutely needs to be an enquiry. “The Atherton Tablelands community is hurting and there are more than 800 creditors who’ve been left high and dry.”

2013 XXXX Gold Variety Bash
Cars built before World War 1
Quirky cars and crazy costumes hit Mount Isa just in time for the rodeo. A 10 day 3,500 km road trip of a lifetime sees colourful characters and a lot of fun to be had, all in the name of helping Queensland’s sick, disadvantaged and special needs kids.
How old is your car? Members of the High Wheelers Club spent the Queens Birthday weekend driving around Bundaberg in their veteran cars.
The XXXX Gold Sun, Saddles and Surf Bash departs in August, and will be in town for the Mount Isa Rodeo on August 9 to 11. Over 400 vehicles, each with their customised crazy car meeting special requirements (at least 30 years old and no performance enhancing modifications) set out from Emerald on August 4 travelling through Blackall, Stonehenge, Winton,
Boulia, Mount Isa, Normanton, Georgetown, Mareeba, and ending up at Mission Beach. Last year the event raised $1.45 million with Rob Goodwin from Variety Queensland saying the Bash began in 1985 when Dick Smith took a group of intrepid motorists from Bourke to Burketown in their old cars, raising money for charity along the way. “We’re now in our 24th year and we’ve got Bashers coming from all over,” he said. Spots are still open so get in touch with Variety Queensland on 3907 9300 or email info@ varietyqld.org.au. www.variety.org.au/qldbash

All of the 22 vehicles are over one hundred years old with the oldest built in 1907 and the youngest one was made two years before World War One started.

RACQ targets parents in safety program Education Officer Karina Halliday said the new Kids & Cars program was created in response to growing calls from parents and carers for practical advice on how to reduce the risk of children being injured or killed around cars. “At least one child each week in Australia is trapped or crushed in a vehicle-related incident – it’s the most frequent cause of death in children after drowning and often the driver responsible is a member of the child’s family,” she said. The Kids & Cars program covers choosing and installing the correct child seat, how to minimise driver distraction, driveway safety
and teaching your child road safety.
CARRS-Q research shows 25% of kids under seven are incorrectly restrained. “A common mistake is parents thinking their child has outgrown the child or booster seat,” said Ms Halliday.
The step by step guide on installing car seats on RACQ’s YouTube channel can be viewed at www.youtube.com/racqofficial.

Housing figures increase again
Prolonging the pain for home building The RBA decision to keep the Cash Rate on hold at 2.75% reduces the potential for residential building activity said Senior Economist with HIA, Shane Garrett. “The RBA had the option to reduce rates in early July and deliver badly needed support to business and households and by failing to move, the weaknesses in the construction industry will be prolonged, he said. “Outside the mining sector, growth in other sectors of the economy is quite weak, including residential construction which is
the lowest in almost a decade. Lower interest rates are needed to help pace the industry and give businesses a bit of breathing space in terms of interest costs. Mr Garrett said the scope for further reduction in the Cash Rate exists despite the RBA’s concerns about inflation. “It must be remembered that inflationary impacts of the recent dollar decline will be limited by the considerable slack that exists across sections of the economy as well as the use of fixed price contracts with suppliers. “Accordingly the RBA should
not allow worries about inflation to hold it back from providing necessary stimulus to the economy.
ABS figures for April show Queensland housing finance commitments have increased for the third month in a row. Paul Bidwell from Master Builders said the total number of owneroccupied dwellings rose 1.3% in April (seasonally adjusted) following rises of 1.9% in March and 3.8% in February. “It’s reassuring to see the number of commitments for construction and purchase of new homes is up around 7% for the month and while figures
are encouraging the housing sector as a whole is only showing tenuous signs of recovery. “Unfortunately the proportion of first home buyers still remains well below the long term average at 10.3% compared to 18%, due to lack of confidence and tighter lending requirements. He added the Queensland Government’s $15,000 Great Start Grant has yet to make any significant difference to the number of people building a first home.
Shane Garrett
Industry urged to keep up skills The vital need for contractors and builders to keep skills updated has prompted Master Builders to launch a continuing professional development (CPD) scheme for members. Housing Policy Director, Paul Bidwell said it will put the “master back into Master builders by improving the overall quality of workers. “Clients seek to engage professionals who keep up with the latest information and trends and that’s why the CPD scheme was developed – to
encourage employees to continually develop as professionals. Participation in the scheme is voluntary and free for Master Builders members. Participants must complete at least 10 hours each year. CPD activities must be relevant to career development in the industry and can vary from workshops and courses to attending industry conferences and trade shows.

Reforms to increase building confidence Six key reforms and work with the state government to address the major problems facing Queensland’s building and construction industry. They include: • provide housing at price points people can afford with measures to contain costs and drive demand • reduce cost of land by reforming the planning and development system • improve capacity of contractors to manage their operations and legal liabilities • enhance safety, productivity and efficiency in the industry by ensuring work practices are based on rule of law. • improve consumer confidence in building and construction • develop skills and training that is relevant
and beneficial to the industry. Director of Housing Policy, Paul Bidwell said low levels of demand, availability and cost of finance and town planning requirements and infrastructure charges have been the major constraints facing the industry recently. “Our six point plan will help address these constraints to ensure the industry is well positioned as activity levels begin to return to pre-GFC levels,” he said. “The building and construction industry is still under enormous pressure particularly in the commercial sector – while there are some signs of recovery in the residential sector, conditions remain shaky.”

Naked mortgages shaking up market Guaranteeing 100% rebate of upfront mortgage broker fees, Naked Mortgages has dramatically changed the way borrowers can source a home loan. It’s the fee for service online broker that offers the best deal plus rebates 100% of the upfront commission received from the bank. For a loan of $350,000 this equates to around $2000 in commission which is paid direct to the borrower. CEO Matt Graham said it’s a natural progression for borrowers to arrange a home loan online and receive the broker’s commission into the bargain. “Naked Mortgages does not have an expensive network or franchise offices and associated overheads, allowing us to pass all these savings onto the borrower,” he said. “We are not anti-broker but
understand our arrival will not be popular in the industry.” How does it work? A simple two-step process enables borrowers to identify their best deal and apply online. Naked Mortgages arrange the loan and submit an application to the preferred lender, obtaining loan approval and processing it right through to completion. Naked Mortgages guarantees 100% rebate of upfront lender commission (normally retained by the mortgage broker), disclosure of all fees and commission, reliable selection of best lenders, best overall deal financially. New RTA pocket guide makes renting easy Tenants and landlords will be better informed about renting rules thanks to new publications from the RTA. The new booklets and online mini guides provide people with the practical tenancy information they need. General Manager, Fergus Smith said tenants can turn to the pocket guide for the nuts and bolts about renting. “When tenants move into their new home they want a basic overview of renting rights and responsibilities,” he said. Pocket Guide for tenants – houses and units is a handy 12 page booklet covering the basics of renting and pointing readers to more detailed information on the RTA website. Tenants in caravan parks have their own new booklet, Pocket guide for tenants – caravan parks to help guide them through matters. It is mandatory under Queensland law for agents/landlords to give tenants the pocket guide at the start of a tenancy. “We acknowledge more people
want to engage online so they can also download
the booklet from the RTA website,” said Mr Smith.
At www.rta.qld.gov.au tenants can also read or
download three new online miniguides – Moving In, During A Tenancy and Moving Out.

Fraser Island – idyllic escape on our doorstep On the World Heritage Listed largest sand island in the world you’ll see the stark contrast of talc-like white sand and blue-green window lakes, the ancient dignity of towering rainforests growing in seemingly infertile sands, the purity of the water flowing in the many creeks – it is possible to go on endlessly, just like Fraser’s endless beaches. Make sure you see Lake McKenzie the superb swimming freshwater lake, and Eli Creek pumping four million litres of water into the ocean every hour. This is the largest freshwater creek along the east coast. Visit the Maheno Wreck renowned for the fastest trans-atlantic crossing and as a World War I hospital ship; or take a dip in the Champagne
Pools where waves crash over rocks lining sandy pools with a golden froth like champagne bubbles. Passenger ferries and 4WD vehicle barges operate daily services from River Heads and Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach) with Kingfisher Bay Resort Mainland Reception and secure car parking at River Heads. The resort also offers courtesy pickups from accommodation, coach and airport in Hervey Bay. Hervey Bay is the Whale Watch Capital and adventures don’t get any bigger than making friends with magnificent humpback whales who seek out these calm waters to rest their new calves. .
Whales love showing off for tourists during the season from July to November with expert whale-watch operators offering packages to suit everyone. Boat crews know their game When whales are sighted the boats slow their engines to idly keep at a safe distance These marine giants have
become so familiar with operators and visitors onboard they often come up to say hello, engaging in antics such as waving or slapping their pectoral fins on the water surface, tail slapping and the most prized photo opportunity to them all – the breach.
Hervey Bay Seafood Festival Celebrate what Hervey Bay is famous for – the abundance and variety of wild caught seafood from the pristine waters of the Fraser Coast. More humpback whales in more than 50 years, as many as 16,000 are expected to visit Queensland waters right about now as you read this, and the ones you’ll meet at Hervey Bay are as friendly as the locals. It’s the only destination on the eastern coast where the gentle giants stop and take time to play and interact with delighted visitors. It’s hard to say who has the best time- them or us. A close encounter with them is an intimate humbling experience – definitely something to see for yourself as whales swim alongside your vessel, rolling their enormous bodies with a drum roll of fin and tail slapping and the incredible power of the breach – a photographer’s dream. Choosing a vessel – the fleet at Urangan Boat Harbour offers a diverse range of
choice with underwater observation rooms, audio technology and qualified marine experts. From double-storey cruisers to twin-hulled catamarans the different sized vessels let you decide between an intimate experience and full-on excitement.
You can make a day of it or head out for a morning or afternoon tour. The size and facilities of the vessels vary – what is assured are highly experienced crews who are well versed in whale habits and other wildlife that you might see in the bay including dolphins and turtles.
Whale welfare is paramount. Crews work to a strict code of conduct and although they stop the boats short of the pods, curious whales routinely approach, swimming right up to say Hello and introduce their calves.
Cultural and tourism heart of Fraser Coast The Cultural Centre in Hervey Bay unites the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere, allowing tourists to experience the region’s natural offerings under one roof. Cairns will be the first Australian regional centre to host Tourism Australia’s annual global Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) trade event in 2014. Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said ATE was one of the most significant travel trade events on the Australian tourism calendar, bringing together Australian tourism businesses with buyers from around the world. “This event is a major coup for Queensland tourism and is expected to attract thousands of participants from across the world, including Australian tourism operators and key
international buyer companies. “Delegates will also have the opportunity to experience Queensland tourism products firsthand, travelling throughout the State before and after the event. Member for Cairns and Assistant Minister for Tourism Gavin King said this announcement was great news . “Hosting ATE is not only an opportunity to showcase Australian tourism, but also to highlight the strength of Cairns Tourism to the world,” he said. Ms Stuckey said this will be the fourth time Queensland has hosted the event since its establishment in 1979.
The Central Highlands Multicultural Festival on August 24 will together promote community awareness of multiculturalism and the benefits of living in a multicultural society. It provides the chance to embrace common values by sharing in food, music, entertainment and most importantly, laughter. Since its inception in 2005, the festival has gone from strength to strength attracting over 6,000 last year. This year’s has an eclectic mix of performances from the Central Highland’s best dance ensembles and multicultural dance troupes, regional choirs as well as local singing sensations. There will also be plenty of fun for the young (and the young at heart!) in the Kids Zone. The festival will also feature a variety of global ales in the International Beer and Wine Garden.
For the third year in a row, the festival will form part of Arts in August, an arts and cultural initiative encompassing the whole of the Central Highlands region. Throughout Arts in August, a variety of cultural events, artists’ workshops, gallery displays and performance art will take place, with the month-long celebration culminating with the festival.

FOR SALE
Fossicking across the Gemfields Take an Just 40 minutes from Emerald on your way to Longreach are the largest Sapphire fields in the world with 90% of the Sapphires on the market today originally coming from these fields. The Gemfields of Sapphire and Rubyvale are by far the greatest attraction during the Winter, Spring and Autumn months. The sapphire fields date back to 1875 when the first gem was found by a Railway Surveyor. Sapphires come in every colour of the rainbow. Sapphires called "parti-colours" are multicoloured and red sapphires are rubies. You never know your luck! Visitors come from all over Australia, indeed the world to search for the blue, green, yellow and part-coloured and star sapphires that are found. Sapphire is just 10 kms north from Anakie (on
the main highway west) on a sealed road and features caravan parks, cabins, shops, souvenirs, and gem cutters. You’ll catch fossicking fever when you visit Rubyvale, Sapphire, Anakie and Willows Gemfields where you’ll get tips to help you find that special memento. Dig at one of the nominated areas or take it easy and buy a bucket of wash, where the digging has been done for you. Just sieve and sort for the treasure – you can take bags of wash home with you so the holiday never ends. If you don’t find your own stone out on the fields, visit the many shops and show rooms and browse through the range of stunning gems on sale.

TROPICAL NORTH Escape the cold winter chill – warm up in NQ Want to make your friends envious this winter? Tell them you’re going to North Queensland and casually mention the balmy weather, palm trees and swimmable seas. Snorkel or dive the Great Barrier Reef, set sail in the Whitsundays and trek back in time in the primeval Daintree Rainforest. Drive the Savannah Way to the remote Gulf Savannah. This tropical paradise is truly at its best from June to September, when the temperature averages 25 degrees Celsius and the turquoise waters are stinger free. From sunny Cairns, you’ll find a range of mid-winter digs. Get golden beach frontage in tranquil Mission Beach, soak up the low-key tropical glamour of Port Douglas or indulge in true resort luxury at Palm Cove. Along with Cairns and the
backpacker havens of Airlie Beach and Cape Tribulation, these are all great bases for exploring North Queensland’s most famous attraction - the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Further south, try sailing the 74 idyllic, mostly uninhabited islands of the Whitsundays. Relax in a resort on Daydream, Hamilton, Hayman or Lindeman Islands. Bushwalk through rainforest on South Molle or Long Islands, fly over spectacular Heart Reef and write your name in the famous white sand of Whitehaven Beach. OK, maybe you should hold back a little when showing your friends your holiday shots. We all know where they would have liked to be this winter.

Minke Whales in Australia’s Top 3 Queensland’s top secret comes in at No.3 in 100 Best Travel Secrets in Australia, according to bestselling magazine, Australian Traveller. Swimming With Minke Whales in third place, happens from May to August on the Outer Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas. In 1981 Rob Prettejohn, owner of Thala Beach Lodge had a remarkable eye-to-eye encounter off Saint Crispin’s Reef in the Coral Sea. “A marvellous, almost spiritual encounter and I think I was the first human to whom they made their magical, gentle presence known.” said Rob whose amazing experience is the first recorded meeting between their species and ours. His detailed sketch lead to identification as a Minke Whale by Dr Michael Boyden of Sydney University, with the species named Dwarf Minke
Whale four years later by Dr Peter Best in South Africa. Since then locals have been approached by the curious creatures during dives and it’s become a bucket list item for many, with only a certain number allowed the privilege each year.
