Mayor Anne Baker said Emily’s work in branding and design is extremely important to position the region within the larger tourism industry.

Disaster can befall you at any time ``If it ever comes to that’’, I said nodding towards a group of tourists being shepherded through Madrid’s Porta del Sol by their guide, ``shoot me.’’ ``The day might come when you are old and will appreciate the security and convenience of a group,’’ my partner replied. ``Never! One clean shot,’’ I said reaching for the Spanish coffee which was so strong it was making my eyes water, ``between the eyes while I’m sleeping.’’

There’s a perverse thrill to be had from traveling independently due to the knowledge that disaster could befall you at any time.

Flights can be canceled, trains derailed, hire cars stolen, hotel rooms burgled, pockets picked, passports lost – we know all this and still we refuse the relative safety of a guided tour.

On this trip, warned of the dexterity of Spanish pickpockets I had invested in a shoulder holster, one designed not for holding a gun but cash and credit cards.

This meant reaching into my armpit whenever I wanted to buy anything, not always an inviting prospect on a sweaty Madrid afternoon.

It was one, however, that proved its worth when a dark eyed senorita walked up to me and placed a red rose between the buttons of my shirt.

As she did this her hand brushed past the pockets of my jeans and I suddenly knew that if my euros and cards hadn’t been tucked securely under my armpit then in that instant, they would have been gone.

Realising that my pockets were empty she frowned, snatched back the rose and disappeared into the crowd.

New city, blue skies and a map – the perfect start to the

perfect day for the independent traveler.

It does however, help if your towering faith in your own sense of direction is alloyed with a touch of humility.

Neither my partner nor I are so blessed and refusing to concede we could have misread the map, spent several hours marching in the general direction of France rather than towards the centre of Madrid.

MEAL TIME CAN BE CHALLENGING! Meal time for independent travelers can be challenging as you wander strange streets, convinced that the next restaurant will be slightly more inviting than the last.

Having learnt from experience that restaurants recommended in guide books are universally dreadful, we are inveterate meal time wanderers.

The temptation here can be to pause for a few drinks at the various bars you pass in search of the perfect dining place.

We have done this on occasion and awoken the next morning unable to remember whether we ever got around to eating.

Sometimes, however, you get lucky as we did when in Madrid we stumbled upon The Mushroom Restaurant.

It appealed on two levels – we loved mushrooms and it was the only restaurant in the country which did not claim to have been patronised by Ernest Hemingway.

We were led out the back to a cave-like room and plates of mushrooms smothered in garlic and oil appeared with a jug of red wine at about the same time as a group of Swiss football fans, in town to see their team get beaten

by Real Madrid.

They spoke English, were thirsty and much revelry ensued late into the night. ``You wouldn’t have a night like that on a guided tour, would you?’’ asked my partner the next morning. `` I think not’’ I said, wondering why Spanish hangovers felt exactly the same as Australian ones.

In Barcelona I was dragged, protesting mightily but ineffectually, to a flamenco performance. ``It will be packed with tour groups’’, I whined. ``There’s free wine included in the ticket price,’’ said my partner. ``Lead on!’’ I replied.

It was, as it happened, an enjoyable night until an Australian tour group weaved into the room.

More than a few of its number had obviously supped deeply on the gratis wine as evidenced when, with the performers in mid-flamenco, one of them rose to his feet and yelled ``Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi Oi!’’ I turned to my partner and raised an eyebrow. ``I know’’, she said, `` A clean shot. Between the eyes. While you’re sleeping.’’

Support network for Coal facility “mired in controversy” Moranbah traders

GVK Hancock corrects misinformation Josh Euler, Manager Corporate Affairs for GVK Hancock has responded to reports claimed to be incorrect including that India’s future energy demand impacts the viability of GVK’s projects.

“GVK Hancock is currently marketing coal from its lead project, the Alpha coal project into South East Asia and has no plans to market product into India. We remain firmly committed to the development of our Galilee Basin coal assets and are continuing to develop our projects to a point where construction can commence. We clearly wouldn’t be doing that if we thought the projects weren’t viable,” was part of Mr Euler’s response.

Also incorrect were claims that impacts to groundwater in the Galilee Basin haven’t been properly assessed.

“We’ve invested tens of millions of dollars on the most extensive and rigorous environmental

assessments for the Galilee Basin projects and have met all regulatory requirements.”

“The recent groundwater recommendations from the Land Court do not raise any new environmental obligations under the project’s existing environmental approvals.”

Mr Euler also refuted the claim that GVK Hancock is disposing of all its water licences as its projects are not going ahead.

“This is not true. In the past we secured allocations of excess water supply in the region, but through ongoing planning refinement we have reduced the amount of water we now require.”

“So it makes no business sense to continue paying holding costs for water supply allocations that we no longer need and are only continuing with licensing for the allocation that we require.

Misinterpretation has become an art form “Managing dust associated with coal mining and transport is an industry priority, recently illustrated

with the voluntary application of polymer veneers to coal wagons travelling through central and southern Queensland,” said QRC Executive, Michael Roche.

“The misinterpretation of the National Pollutant Inventory has become an art form for activists since its debut in the mid- 1990s.”

NPI data shows what is released from an emission source but whether it causes pollution to air, land or water depends on other factors – amount of substance emitted, where it is emitted, weather conditions at the time and topography of the land.

“This important qualification will never appear in any statement from Lock The Gate which has replaced Friends Of The Earth as the chief promoter of health scare campaigns on behalf of the anti-coal movement,” said Mr Roche.

Central Queensland Spokesperson for Lock The Gate Alliance, Ellie Smith (pictured right) said the coal loading facility 2.5km from the centre of Moura, handling up to 3.5 million tonnes of coal every year had been mired in controversy since first proposed.

“We know these facilities create large dust plumes every time a truck off-loads its coal or a train is filled with coal, but this facility has been approved with an assessment of generic data rather than local weather records,” said Ms Smith.

“The health of the people of Moura is being put at risk by a “develop at all costs” mentality. This is the deputy-premier’s own electorate yet he seems to be pushing the coal industry’s interests ahead of those of the people of Moura – why?” she asked.

“Can Mr Seeney give a 100% assurance to residents that their health and that of their children will not be impacted by coal dust pollution?”

She added that data from the National Pollutant Inventory shows Queensland is the most polluted state with eight of the nation’s top 10 dust emitting coal mines located here.

Making it work when you work away That’s the name of the new online induction tool launched by the awardwinning team at Mining Family Matters, to boost the emotional resilience of the growing population of FIFO workers.

Creator Alicia Ranford (pictured) said it offers proactive advice from a psychologist on key issues – setting goals, overcoming mood swings, avoiding arguments about how R&R is spent, staying connected without 24/7 phone access. “It’s designed to forewarn employees about the most common emotional pressures faced by FIFO workers and arm them with simple strategies to overcome issues as they arise,� Ms Ranford said. “Everyone benefits, the worker, their family and their company because an employee who’s happy with life back home is more likely to be focussed and

productive on the job.�

She said whenever the website runs workshops for FIFO workers, they say how great it would be to get the information to all employees up on site. “That isn’t always practical given the remoteness of many operations, so we decided to create an online training tool to help workers any time, anywhere.�

The induction tool was created in conjunction with international online training company, Health Safety Works and specifically tailored to ensure information is relevant to FIFO workers whether single, in a relationship or have children.

Bicycle Queensland’s views on new laws CEO, Ben Wilson said both the Parliamentary Committee and State Government have recognised there is a pressing need to do more for safety of bike riders. “Now we have new laws that increase penalties for bicycle riders and drivers alike to make us all share roads more easily,� he said. “Cycling is a great activity and is a safe, fun, healthy way to get around.

We don’t want to lose sight of this fact as too much negativity is being raised through this reform process.�

Ben said the key behaviours sought by the law changes are pretty simple, logical and unchanged for 100 or more years. “Always overtake bicycles carefully and leave them plenty of space, and riders – obey the road rules. For the best internationally evidenced safety outcome, Queensland also needs all levels of government to provide dedicated cycling infrastructure so people can ride from A to B without sharing narrow roads with motor vehicles.�

Resin jewellery a Tannum Caravan Village hit in Moranbah sells for $5m plus

From bling and beads to dinosaur heads, Moranbah locals had a blast creating unique resin jewellery at an arts workshop at Moranbah State High School.

Award-winning artist Janine Whitling taught working with resin, mixing the liquid base, adding colours, using moulds and embedding objects.

“It’s inspiring that the Moranbah workshop participants came from all sorts of backgrounds and ages but met on those two days as equals to simply have fun and be creative,” she said.

Shauna Lore who loved the individuality of her creations said she plans to continue making more pieces at home now she has the skills.

No surprises at interest rates hold This is the 10th consecutive month that RBA has left the cash rate at the historically low level of 2.5% with Mortgage Choice saying it’s no surprise given that consumer sentiment plummeted in May. “59% of Australians say they expect their family finances to worsen over the coming year as a result of the Budget” said Jessica Darnbrough.

“Leading up to the Federal Budget, economists predicted interest rates to rise in the near future but this may no longer be the case. Instead the RBA is likely to leave them on hold for some time to wait and see what happens to consumer sentiment.”

Loan Market Director, Mark De Martino said the RBA is doing its part to bring confidence to the market, pointing out that two years ago the rate was 3.5%, and that one percent drop was helping consumers pay off their home faster.

He said RBA Governor, Glenn Stevens made it clear it was hard to determine not just when the next rate movement would be, but if it would be up or down.

Mr De Martino predicted the July and August decisions would also be to hold , which would leave the RBA cash rate on hold for the longest period since 2006.

Investors list top challenges The First Time Investor Survey conducted

New app for ordering scripts Queensland families now have an easier way to manage their medicines with the launch of a new smart phone app called eRx Express in pharmacies in Brisbane, Surfers Paradise, Gold and Sunshine Coasts and Toowoomba. eRx Express is a free app that lets people scan and pre-order their script medicines wherever they are and whatever they are doing, for pick up at a time and date that suits. The app is part of eRx Script Exchange’s national network which lets GPs and pharmacists exchange electronic prescriptions safely and securely.

Pharmacist, Jason Bratuskins, eRx Express said “We all know how hard it can be waiting in queues with small children, or when people are sick, and this new app makes a real difference by reducing waiting times and letting people choose the most convenient time to collect their script medicines.”

The 4.3km undersea tunnel between the mainland and Curtis Island off Gladstone was recognised because it provides a conduit to install the gas transmission pipeline without disturbing the sea floor.

The project was also runner-up for the overall Premier’s Sustainability Award.

Accepting the award, Project Manager, James Campbell said everyone on the team was incredibly

conscious of the significance of the region.

“The award is fitting recognition of the innovative tunnel solution which eliminated the environmental disturbance associated with alternative methods such as dredging or trenching,” he said.

An 11-storey, 198-room motel development and food premises has been approved by Gladstone Regional Council across four separate CBD allotments in Goondoon Street.

Regional Strategy portfolio spokesperson Cr Matt Burnett said the motel will include a restaurant and bar, function and conference rooms and 143 car parking spaces. “A key component will be a public piazza on the corner of Goondoon and Yarroon Streets with public art integrated as part of Council’s requirements under the CBD/Waterfront Revitalisation Plan,� he said.

Cr Burnett said the application was originally lodged as an Integrated Tourist Resort Facility last August, but later changed to the current application as a result of intended use for the development.

Sapphire With a name like Sapphire, it’s not hard to guess what can be found here. There is a sense of fun and adventure fossicking for your own sapphires. Mined since the late 1800s, the moon-like landscape is as much a part of the lifeblood of Sapphire as the rich treasures in the earth. Be sure to visit the historic Piano Tuners Grave at Retreat Creek. Fossicking areas in Sapphire (where you are allowed to camp and dig) include ‘Graves Hill’ and ‘Big Bessie’.

If you love a photo opportunity, then ‘The Big Ring’, ‘Big Spanner’ and ‘Big Pick and Shovel’ can all be found in and around Sapphire, so keep an eye out for these fun icons. Sapphire, which was originally called Sapphiretown, has developed into the services hub of the Sapphire Gemfields.

Rubyvale The quaint town of Rubyvale offers comfortable accommodation within a hotel or cabin as well as holiday units and caravan parks. Marvel at the tiny tunnels, called “tummy tunnels” used by the pioneer miners. Middle Ridge is the closest fossicking area to the township, plus there are numerous fossicking parks.

Fossicking parks allow people of all ages and fitness to join the fun of finding a sapphire. With the digging work already done, visitors can buy a bucket of wash and start searching straight away. Friendly staff are on hand to provide advice and guidance on how to sieve and sort for sapphires. If you don’t find your own gem, the local gem galleries and shops offer stunning sapphire jewellery for sale. A new observatory offers visitors the chance to view the beautiful galaxy of stars in the outback night sky. Rubyvale also has a post office, laundromat, and a general store with fuel.

Waltzing Matilda story coming home The song’s birthplace of Winton is the location for the new Banjo and Matilda movie to be filmed this year with permanent sets including a homestead and shearing sheds to be built.

Producer Bill Leimbach originally decided to use Broken Hill in New South Wales but said the soul of the story belongs to Western Queensland.

Potential sponsorship from supporters including major mining companies could be channelled into creating a new Banjo and Matilda tourist experience.

In 1895, Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson, bush poet and journalist stayed with friends at Dagworth Station near Winton where he wrote his most famous poem, Waltzing Matilda, and the rest as they say, is history.

Winter is well and truly here so put away the barra and jack gear as it is time to target some other species for the next couple of months in our estuaries.

There’s plenty to choose with Salmon, Jew, grunter, flathead, whiting and bream, just to name a few.

For grunter and bream, fish the back of the creeks on the big tides and for the best results use fresh prawn bait.

If you are after a feed of whiting, fish the incoming tide as it pushes up over the yabbie beds. The best bait here of course is freshly dug yabbies.

Over the years I have found the bigger whiting come from fishing the shallow water where the yabbie holes are close to mangrove roots.

When digging your yabbies keep an eye out for fresh flathead lays in the sand. These are teardrop in shape and are left from the flathead when they bury themselves while waiting to ambush their prey.

These sandbars with flathead lays are well worth flicking lures over when the tide is in, soft plastics in Nuclear Chicken colour or hard bodies in a pink colour are the most productive.

Give the crabs a go Although crabbing closes down in the winter if you’re out fishing you might as well throw in a few pots. Try setting them in the deeper holes of the estuaries or close to some rocky outcrop for the best results.

Fresh fish frames are the best bait but if your have a bait holder in your pot, chicken wings or necks soaked in tuna oil works well and is a cheap source of bait.

Salmon are in nearly all the creeks at this time of year and make sure the bait is fresh herring or prawn.

If you are keen on chasing a barra try casting lures around the drains as the water exits them on the run out tide.

The barra will be sitting waiting in ambush for the bait fish as they move out with the receding tide.

Offshore schoolie and Spanish mackerel should be on the prowl.

For the Spanish trolling skirted lures, lures like the rapala CD18 in the red head colour or gar rigged on ganged hooks is always a good way to catch a feed. ********************* Winter is the best time in central Queensland to get amongst one of our favourite fish, the red emperor This time of year the reefs and bommies offshore attract these great red fish.

The best part about fishing for red emperor is the “by catch”, species like yellow sweeties, snapper and big red throat and Nannygai are all caught while chasing emperor and are all great eating fish.

Slab baits of fish flesh or fresh squid are the best baits. and a rig with a heavy sinker dropped to the bottom, than wind it up a bit from the bottom a bit and hang on.

All in all fishing should be great over the next month so get out there, relax, explore and enjoy the great fishing Queensland has to offer.
