Bundaberg’s Mon Repos Beach welcomes thousands of turtle-tracking visitors for the annual breeding season. The unique opportunity to witness a huge mother turtle lumber up the beach to lay its eggs, carefully cover them and return the long distance to the ocean, never to see them again is one not to be missed. Page 15 has more on the turtles and how to see them.

TRAVELLING MAY BROADEN THE MIND Travelling may broaden the mind but the stress involved can also shorten your life by several years. My partner is a sensible woman. You could ask why, if she is so sensible, does she live with me. I’ve no answer to that but you’re not the first to ask. Regardless, she is wonderfully organized and when we arrived at Brisbane International Airport and she was asked for her passport, she produced a special travel wallet in which she had filed copies of our hotel reservations, her airline ticket, foreign currency and passport. Passport? Well, no. It was still sitting on the desk in her home office which was 40 minutes distant and the flight closed in 90 minutes. “Taxi’’ she screamed and ran out of the terminal. She was halfway home when I called her. “Do you have the house keys?’’ I asked. ``Yes’’ she said. Apparently living with me had not entirely destroyed her brain. She made it back to the airport $100 poorer in cab fares but with the passport. “You know how you asked me if I had the house keys, ’’ she said. “Well the cab driver told me he took a guy home recently who had also forgotten his passport but he had left his keys in his bag at the airport. ``When he got home and realised he couldn’t get in, he walked over to the garden, picked up a rock, smashed a window, climbed inside, grabbed his passport and took the cab back to the airport.’’ Packing the correct clothes is critically important

when travelling and before we left on a recent trip to Stockholm and other Baltic ports, my partner asked me what I was taking. “It will be the middle of their summer,’’ I said. “l’m taking shorts, short sleeved shirts and maybe a jumper.’’ I had never been to Scandinavia before. How was I to know that their idea of summer was the equivalent of the depths of a Brisbane winter. We got to Stockholm and the sun was shining but the air temperature was about 10 degrees. I put on a pair of shorts, walked 10 metres down the street and watched my legs turn blue. I looked at my partner who may have been saying to me: “You idiot! You said it would be warm’’ but her teeth were chattering so much I couldn’t understand a word. We quickly bought woolly jackets and long pants and lived in them for the next three weeks. Our hotel was comfortable but typically European small. “Better than Thailand’’ said my partner after we had checked in. Ah, yes. Thailand. Thailand was my first experience in buying accommodation on the internet. I booked a luxury villa on an island overlooking the Andaman Sea. We arrived late and fell into bed, exhausted. I got up in the morning and walked out onto the balcony to find that the ocean view on the website had been replaced by a fly blown rubbish dump. There was no air conditioning, the hot water system didn’t work and the mattress was decorated with some interesting stains. We stayed for two nights of the seven we’d booked and then fled, the screams of the fist waving, female proprietor demanding more money following our cab as it sped off down the street.
The lesson learnt? Do plenty of research and never, ever trust the photos on a website. Travel safely.

The Highway One Project The private land-sharing website, www.youcamp. com has launched the project to help create thousands of new, privately owned overnight rest areas, camp sites and other tourist facilities along Australia’s highways and main roads, particularly the National Highway and Highway One. Hundreds of people die each year in fatiguerelated accidents with lobby groups, local councils and reports including the Queensland Drive Tourism Strategy saying a major factor is lack of places to stop. According to Youcamp.com, along the Bruce Highway especially around Mackay drivers are forced to drive for hundreds of kilometres with almost no adequate rest areas. “In mining areas and during busy times of the year it can be almost impossible to find somewhere to spend a night, forcing people to drive for dangerously long periods.”
Highway One Project encourages property owners to advertise accommodation options on their land – allowing a campervan to park by a creek, a paddock or driveway; pitch a tent, rent out a caravan that stands empty most of the time, or stay in a spare room or cabin. James Woodford from Youcamp.com said there are literally thousands of lovely places to enjoy on private land near the highway but just a handful on public land.
Love Boat star celebrates onboard Sea Princess ... by Sherry Barnes Lauren Tewes who played cruisedirector, Julie McCoy on the highly successful US TV series, The Love Boat which ran for 10 seasons from 1977, celebrated her 60th birthday back onboard the Princess Cruises liner sharing the same name as her former ship . “I was absolutely delighted when Princess Cruises asked me to help launch their new roundtrip options from Brisbane, especially as it was also my birthday which was pure coincidence,” said Lauren, who was last in Australia in 1981 when several episodes were filmed in Sydney. “Playing Julie was a dream job, and when we visited other ports with Princess Cruises, seeing different countries and staying in luxury cabins, the guest stars did most of the work and we actually had a vacation – that was the best time and I’ve loved to cruise ever since.” The Love Boat attracted many famous names as guest-stars including Howard Keel, Jane Powell, Red Buttons, Van Johnson, Ethel Merman, Sir John Mills and countless others. “My favourite was Vincent Price who played a scary guy, what else, in a Halloween episode – he was so
kind, a wonderful man with great knowledge of food, wine and travel,” said Lauren. “All the passengers on the show found a happy ending, except for poor old Julie – I was always unlucky in love.”
Lauren and the actors playing fellow crew members Captain Stubing, Gopher, Doc, Isaac and Vicki continue to keep in close touch, with Gavin McLeod recently publishing his autobiography “This Is Your Captain Speaking.” Roundtrips from Brisbane
Princess Cruises announced its biggest ever Queensland presence with roundtrips ranging from seven to 104 nights. New voyages for 2014 include:
• Australia and New Zealand, 35 nights on Dawn Princess sails April 15 with Yarra Valley wine tasting and Maori cultural performances in Auckland.
• Hawaii, Tahiti and South Pacific, 41 nights on Sea Princess departs April 7 including reefs of Bora Bora and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
• World Cruise, 104 nights on Dawn Princess departs May 20 visiting ports in South America as well as New York, Rome, Singapore and Athens.

Zara Phillips - Patron of Magic Millions Women
Zara Phillips MBE, silver medallist at London 2012 Olympic Games and former European and World Champion has been announced Patron of Magic Millions Racing Women for 2014 – 2018. The appointment was a natural progression from her success as inaugural Ambassador last January and Magic Millions is thrilled to be working with her again. Speaking from her stables in the UK, Ms Phillips said she is honoured with the appointment and passionate about what the Racing Women initiative seeks to achieve in Australia and internationally. “It’s a cause I am naturally committed
to from personal experience with my mother and grandmother to thank for my lifelong commitment to the sport of horses,” she said. “As I watched at the Gold Coast Turf Club, Racing Women eligible horses finished first, third and fourth, an incredible feat for year one. The female connections of Real Surreal collected $1, 465,000 for winning the race and the bonus incentive – it made history, the most prize money won by a horse in Queensland.” Ms Phillips said due to the imminent arrival of her first child, she is unable to attend the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival but looks forward to returning to Australia to spend
more time on the Gold Coast in 2015. Jeep Magic Millions Raceday is on January 11 with the Yearling Sale from 11am January 8 through to January 14.

WE'VE BECOME AN ASIAN TOURISM HOT-SPOT Make way, Kiwis: Up until now you've been Australia's Number One tourists, at least numerically,
but it's becoming a close-run thing as the number of Chinese visitors continues to climb.
In the next 20 years visitors from China, Indonesia and India will spend $25 billion.
And now the latest Deloitte report says an international tourism boom will bring an even greater number of visitors to these shores. particularly from China, Indonesia and India. They are expected to pump an extra $25 billion into the Australian economy over the next two decades. The Deloitte report says Asian economies are rushing to spend their new-found riches on holidays here and that their holiday-makers, particularly China's, are voting our natural beauties the top attraction, with Queensland rating high on this yardstick. ****************** A Toowoomba restaurant, the Qi'lin, has been included in one of the pre-eminent travel guides in the world, the 2014 Lonely Planet Guide to Australia. It is the most prestigious award won by the restaurant , but not its first. One wall is covered in accolades, including the 2012 National Award for Restaurant and Catering and the 2013 Award for Excellence for Best Chinese Restaurant. Owners are Daryll Scott and Annette Cheung, who said the Lonely Planet inclusion
would make the restaurant a destination point for international and national travellers. ****************** The recent fourth Angel Flight Outback Trailblazer event brought the total raised for Angel Flight Australia to more than $400,000, besides generating millions of dollars in economic activity and publicity for outback Queensland. Now, the Remote Area Planning and Development Board, comprising seven western Queensland councils, has announced it will adopt Trailblazer as a major charitable initiative. "This will spread the charity's wings over new, exciting areas," said board chairman, Rob Chandler, who is also Barcaldine's mayor. The Moranbah entry was the overall winner of the latest Trailblazer. The seven shires and councils that make up the Remote Area board include Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo, Diamantina, Longreach and Winton areas covering almost 400,000sq km, or 22.9 percent of the State's land area.
The $20 million plus compensation hearing against the Gladstone Ports Corporation will return to court for hearing in Brisbane on January 20. It has been brought by a group of commercial fishermen and shop owners who claim they suffered great business losses through dredging works and a fish disease outbreak in Gladstone Harbour. They allege the $70 billion port development to transport liquefied natural and coal seam gas contributed to the disease outbreak. ****************** Projects as different as sponsoring coaching sessions with the Brisbane Broncos and drawing up plans for fishway rehabilitation, or establishing a school scholarship are all part of a "community investment programme" run by Arrow Energy, which last year supported 92 Queensland community groups. The programme, known as "Brighter Futures", supports not-for-profit groups on projects that build community capacity in health, safety, education and environment.

What’s coming up at QPAC? (for bookings Ticketek 136 246) A Murder Is Announced – from December 27 for a limited season Miss Marple, Agatha Christie’s famous sleuth is on the case again and this one is intriguing – can you guess whodunnit? Following the unbelievable long-running success with The Mousetrap this wonderful murder mystery set in an innocent English village has a brilliantly intricate plot (of course). Well known TV actors, Judi Farr (Miss Marple) Carmen Duncan and Robert Grubb head the cast of fascinating characters – it’s just superb. Shall we dance? You can get in early for next year’s huge QPAC musical with Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahu Rhodes together again after their success in South Pacific in another Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, The King And I opening April 15. Revived by the Gordon Frost organisation and Opera Australia,
next year’s production follows the highly successful 1991 show starring Hayley Mills as Anna. Chineseborn opera singer Shu-Cheen Yu who played slave girl, Tuptim in that production, returns this time as the King’s head wife, Lady Thiang. Clancestry – A Celebration Of Country – February 18 to 23
On the Cultural Forecourt, Courier Mail Piazza, South Bank and around QPAC, the 2014 festival features a conversation series and key events all week culminating in a weekend of free performances, family day, workshops and markets.
Arts Minister Ian Walker said Clancestry celebrates arts and cultures of the world’s First Nations Peoples with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The 2013 event attracted more than 10,600 people. Next year’s festival is accessible to all - local cultural groups, emerging and nationally significant artists with the full program – free for audiences.

Queensland ecotourism zips to new heights
Visitors to Kondalilla National Park are set to reach lofty new heights with the Queensland Government opening an Expressions of Interest process for a zipline canopy tour. “Opening up national parks and protected areas will encourage visitors to stay longer in our regions and ultimately help us achieve our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020,” said Tourism Minister, Jann Stuckey. “The zipline project will let operators contribute to our vision of making Queensland a world leader in ecotourism by 2020 and I encourage proponents to submit innovative concepts which will showcase this unique region.”
“Queensland is blessed with some of the world’s most stunning national parks and protected areas, and we want to share these with the world by making them more accessible,” said Minister for National Parks, Steve Dickson. “The Obi Obi Gorge in Kondalilla National Park provides a unique opportunity to showcase the region’s pristine natural environment to all Queenslanders and visitors.

Hervey Bay is a paradise for kids

Accommodation – a number of excellent private options from holiday units, resorts such as Kingfisher Bay and Eurong and camping permits available at various locations to suit. The relatively safe waters of Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait feature numerous tidal flats, mangrove creeks, reeds, sand flats and submerged ledges. Hervey Bay’s waters are sandy and quite shallow but have compressed sand (coffee rock) reef and ledges which habitat coral trout and red emperor, parrot fish, pink snapper, sweetlip, trevally, cobia and mackerel. Best location for shore fishing is Urangan Pier where anglers target whiting especially in spring. Plenty of baitfish such as hardyheads, garfish and
herring swarm under the pier attracting pelagics such as queenfish, Spanish and school mackerel, trevally and tuna. Go game fishing in deeper waters at the outer end of the pier baiting up with live herring to target the pelagics. Shelley Beach, the Urangan Steps (just west of the pier) and the Great Sandy Strait Marina walls are good for whiting and bream. Fishing in winter yields bream, tailor and jewfish while spring and summer produce big flathead and whiting.
Fraser Island Provides A Fun Learning Environment The world’s largest sand pit makes a pretty interesting outdoor classroom – there are 1840 square kms of sand tracks to explore; it is one of the only places that rainforest grows in sand at elevations of 200 metres; it supports a fresh water aquifer that is approximately 40 times the size of Sydney Harbour and it is home to Australia’s purest strain of dingo. Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Kerry Brough, said interpretation of the environment was the key tenet of the resort’s environmental philosophy – so the development of a formal curriculum-based education program was the next logical step for the resort group.
Fraser Island Beach Houses are individual fully self-contained 2 and 3 bedroom houses situated on the stunning beach frontage on breathtaking Fraser Island
“By combining the knowledge base of our Resort Ranger team with teacher’s curriculum requirements, we are able to deliver a custommade program for students covering topics from Biology and Environmental disciplines as well as Hospitality, Leadership and Team Building from just $49 per student a day,” she said.
The resort group currently offers interpretative half and full day touring programs on Fraser Island where primary, secondary and tertiary students can apply the principles of earth science, marine studies, geography and eco-tourism. Visit kingfisherbay.com.

Nesting turtles already sighted Spurred on by earlier than expected sightings of nesting turtles, Bundaberg’s Mon Repos Beach prepares to welcome tens of thousands of turtle-tracking visitors for the awesome annual breeding season. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Cathy Gatley said threatened loggerheads and flatbacks have already started returning as they have done for generations with Turtle 40221 visiting six times in the past 30 years. The unique opportunity to witness a huge mother turtle lumber up the beach to lay its eggs , carefully cover them and return the long distance to the ocean, never to see them again is one not to be missed. There is also a chance for visitors
to be hands-on and help rangers relocated clutches of eggs if they are laid too low on the beach. With their inbuilt GPS, the turtles travels tens of thousands of kilometres before returning to the area they were born when they’re ready to nest, a “natal homing” natural phenomenon. They usually lay around 130 eggs per clutch returning every two weeks to nest, and laying four clutches per season. Nightly ranger-guided Turtle Encounters run seven nights a week with bus transfers available from local accommodation and bookings essential. For information check the website www.bundabergregion.org or phone 1300 722 099.

Repos to breed. Even though the first babies are hatching, other mums are still laying their eggs in January. February – Hatching is in full swing. The tiny guys can be disoriented by bright lights with Bundy running the “Cut the Glow to Help Turtles Go” campaign so they head in the right direction, towards the sea. Late March – Turtle Time comes to a close. In 2012 the incredible marine creatures extended the season to April 9 while the season was brought to a premature end this year due to the floods in January, followed by more heavy rains in February.

GLADSTONE - AGNES WATER Island paradise event venue Agnes Water’s brilliant new estates
With its sister Town Of 1770, Agnes Water shows no signs of becoming “monotonous suburbia” according to Project Overseer of The 1770 Group, Rebecca Willis. With work commenced on three estates – Seaspray, Shores By 1770 and Point View, all with views of either ocean or hinterland, forget your traditional perceptions of estates –generic stock-standard houses looking the same. The 1770 Group works closely with renowned designers at the forefront of modern Australian beach architecture. “Quality architecture by the beach
has never been so affordable and buyers can take virtual tours of the designs at www.1770agnes.com.au,” said Rebecca. “Here you can enjoy the Great Barrier Reef and fantastic surf simultaneously, go horse riding on the beach at sunset or stand-up paddleboarding.” Agnes Water is the most northern surfing beach, with more tours and activities than many other destinations. Give yourself plenty of time to absorb all the Discovery Coast has to offer and you’ll never want to leave – many don’t.
Escape the hustle and bustle of Gladstone, and set sail 15 minutes to an offshore paradise at Quoin Island Retreat. Whether you hire the island exclusively for a special event or just pop over for an overnight stay, the 10-hectare privately owned island habitat is the perfect setting for a weekend escape. Get into the island groove with Sunday sessions, taking a courtesy boat from Gladstone to the island to enjoy gourmet BBQs, drinks, island tunes. Guests can opt to extend the party a little longer with bed and breakfast packages, including return boat transfer to the island. More than just food, music and atmosphere, Quoin
Island is also known for its Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, where holidaymakers can assist with nurturing wild turtles. Exclusive hire price available on request. www. quoinislandretreat.com.au

Tropical North “has its mojo back”
Queensland recorded its first major tourism rebound since the GFC with the Tropical North still proving a tourist mecca and Cairns the best performing destination. Tourism Industry Council chief, Daniel Gschwind said it’s obvious the Tropical North surrounded by World Heritage Reef and rainforest has its mojo back. The region had a 17% spike in visitors in the past year, passing rivals Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “The statewide 6% in growth in spending by international visitors is

One in five tourists to Australia now visit the Tropical North, making it the country’s fastest growing international tourism destination.
