Apple & Grape Harvest Festival From its beginnings in 1954 as the Apple Blossom Festival, in 1966 the Apple Harvest Festival was such a success it was decided to make it a biennial event celebrating the Granite Belt lifestyle. Held next March 7th to 9th, the festival highlights why the region is unique – the combination of altitude and granite produces some of the country’s best produce and wine. Friday is Apple Day and a Gala Ball, Saturday is street stalls, grape
crushing championships, pipe and brass bands, grand parade and fireworks. Over the weekend, enjoy multicultural entertainment, Food and Wine Fiesta, arts and craft markets, quilting exhibition and gardens. Killarney Bonfire Night – July 20 Unique Fire Drums heat up the night at Killarney Bonfire Night. Traditionally a Fire Drum is a 44 Gallon Drum with axe holes knocked in for air, but for Bonfire Night the drums are “hotted up” – cut up, welded and punched to make functional works of art. The fire drums aren’t the only attraction, the bonfire night team have planned live music by Bruce Halter, fireworks, a jumping castle, multi-draw raffle and of course, the giant bonfire. Warm yourself up with stew and damper, pumpkin soup, barbecue, popcorn and hot chips and for those with adult tastes, a can bar with traditional mulled wine is sure to keep out the chills. www.killarneybonfirenight.com

Our top travel secrets among nation’s best Queensland’s top secret comes in at No.3 in 100 Best Travel Secrets in Australia, according to best-selling magazine, Australian Traveller. Swimming With Minke Whales in third place, happens from May to August on the Outer Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas. In 1981 Rob Prettejohn, owner of Thala Beach Lodge had a remarkable eye-to-eye encounter off Saint Crispin’s Reef in the Coral Sea. “A marvellous, almost spiritual encounter and I think I was the first human to whom they made their magical, gentle presence known.” said Rob whose amazing experience is the first recorded meeting between their species and ours. His detailed sketch lead to identification as a Minke Whale by Dr Michael Boyden of Sydney University, with the species named Dwarf Minke Whale four years
later by Dr Peter Best in South Africa. Since then locals have been approached by the curious creatures during dives and it’s become a bucket list item for many, with only a certain number allowed the privilege each year. Check out www.marineencounters.com. au or Thala Beach Lodge who organise trips for guests have all the fascinating information at www.thalabeach.com.au/ eye-to-eye-with-dwarf-minke-whales Other hidden treasures that made the top 50 in Australia were Mossman Gorge (25) Granite Belt Wine Country (32) and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat (42). Cooktown was revealed as “beautifully unspoilt” with Stradbroke Island declared a “natural wonderland”. Hamilton Island was also applauded for a near-perfect secluded stretch of sand aptly named Escape Beach.

Cairns to host 2014 global trade show Cairns will be the first Australian regional centre to host Tourism Australia’s annual global Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) trade event in 2014. Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said ATE was one of the most significant travel trade events on the Australian tourism calendar, bringing together Australian tourism businesses with buyers from around the world. “This event is a major coup for Queensland tourism and is expected to attract thousands of participants from across the world, including Australian tourism operators and key
international buyer companies. “Delegates will also have the opportunity to experience Queensland tourism products firsthand, travelling throughout the State before and after the event. Member for Cairns and Assistant Minister for Tourism Gavin King said this announcement was great news . “Hosting ATE is not only an opportunity to showcase Australian tourism, but also to highlight the strength of Cairns Tourism to the world,” he said. Ms Stuckey said this will be the fourth time Queensland has hosted the event since its establishment in 1979.

OPERA OF THE UNDERWORLD
In the Capricorn Caves is a dazzling light display in December and early January, due to the alignment of the sun over the Tropic of Capricorn, when brilliant direct sun light penetrates the darkness through a vertical shaft in the cave roof at midday.
One of the quirkiest tourist attractions in Australia - and a highly successful one - must surely be that provided in a limestone grotto near Rockhampton by the Underground Opera Company. The natural limestone Capricorn Caves provide incredible acoustics for the Opera at the Caves night performances. These are staged twice a year (three sessions each time) with the latest just having been completed. Like its predecessors, this showing provided some of Australia's finest performers, including Susan Ellis and Glenn Lorimer, singing a selection of opera's greatest arias and duets. The owner of Capricornia Caves, Ann Augusteyn, says the performances are an intimate experience, with the performers quite close to the 90-member audience. Ann says the two-and-a-half hour events have been extremely popular, with out-of-State audience members coming to Rockhampton specifically for the opera experience. "The caves are packed for every performance," she says, "and both audiences and artists are glowing in their praise of what the event means to them." If you want further details on this fascinating affair, phone The Caves on 4934 2883. ******* Directly tapping into the New Zealand tourist market, tourist representatives from Gladstone, Rockhampton and Bundaberg travelled there recently to promote the southern Great Barrier Reef known as the Discovery Coast.
The tour came as a result of the latest survey of tourism trends showing that this part of the Great Barrier Reef had an increase in New Zealand visitors of 19 per cent for the year ended December, 1912---the biggest market increase in all Queensland. Amber Rodgers, of 1770 Larc Tours, was one of the representatives and said great progress had been made on the tour in promoting the area. ******* The fact that we are no longer riding the resources boom seems to be mirrored in the way rental prices in mining areas have plummeted lately, with the average price of a Moranbah three-bedroom house dropping by about $1550. The Residential Tenancies Authority's comparison of rental prices in the Bowen Basin from March 2012 to March this year has revealed a drop in every town. A Nebo real estate agent, Kerri Furber, said the area has to weather the storm. She is offering free rent for the first two weeks in 13 new two-bedroom units if renters sign up for a certain period of time. On the upside of things, says Kerri, some people and their families were returning to the area because they could afford the lower rents. ******* My old friend Clermont Clarrie has provided a bright note on which to finish. Stirring from his
usual bar-room stool, he writes to me: "You might be interested in this Dear John agony column item I spotted in one of our area newspapers the other day...." Dear John, I hope you can help me. The other day I set off for work, leaving my husband in the house. My car broke down a mile along the road and I had to walk back to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbour's daughter. When I confronted him he admitted they had been having an affair for months. I'm a wreck and need advice urgently. Can you please help? Sincerely, Sheila. Dear Sheila, A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults. Start by checking there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of this solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors. I hope this helps, Regards, John.

Queensland Rail’s iconic Sunlander celebrated 60 years on June 4 of carrying families and tourists between Brisbane and Cairns and all points in between. In 1953, the then revolutionary Sunlander hauled by a new diesel electric loco was introduced to replace steam trains which operated along the coastline. Since then more than three million have travelled on it.
Jacob’s Creek have launched The Wine Line, a world first iPhone app allowing you to calculate the number of standard drinks in a glass – available at no cost. Research undertaken by the famous wine brand shows a chronic lack of understanding on the topic with 86% of drinkers unsure what constitutes a standard drink.
Acting CEO Jim Benstead said The Sunlander has a world-wide reputation and is one of the top 25 rail journeys in the world. “Times have changed but customers know they’ll still get fantastic scenery, comfort, great food whenever they step on board.
Point your iPhone camera at your glass and tracing the liquid outline and choosing the wine you’re drinking, the app (pre-loaded with 70 different wines from the Pernod Ricard Australia portfolio) calculates how many standard drinks are in that serving. You can also track how many drinks they are consuming over a session.
The Sunlander travels 1691 kms from Brisbane to Cairns three times a week. The journey takes 31 hours.
The Wine Line app is available for free download in the iTunes Store in Australia only. More information www.jacobscreek.com

Paddle Out For Whales – July 13, Scarness Taking place in the Whale Watch Capital, Hervey Bay, it raises important awareness of issues facing whales today and sending the message they need to be protected. It’s part of National Whale Day held each year by IFAW. Paddlers are encouraged to take to the water on a flotation device, i.e. kayak, boogie board, surfboard, stand up paddle board, home made raft – anything! You can even paddle your feet in the water on the shore to be part of the stunt. A minute’s silence is had and flowers released to acknowledge whales taken in this year’s hunt. A fly by from a local helicopter increases the emotion of the moment, capturing amazing aerial footage. An afternoon’s entertainment follows with live music and guest speakers. www.paddleout4whales.blogspot.com
Whale Watching July to November Over 16,000 whales are expected to visit Queensland waters right about now as you read this, and the ones you’ll meet at Hervey Bay are as friendly as the locals. This will be the most whales to visit in 50 years. It’s the only destination on the eastern coast where the gentle giants stop and take time to play and interact with delighted visitors. It’s hard to say who has the best time- them or us. A close encounter with them is an intimate humbling experience – definitely something to see for yourself as whales swim alongside your vessel, rolling their enormous bodies with a drum roll of fin and tail slapping and the incredible power of the breach – a photographer’s dream. Choosing a vessel – the fleet at Urangan Boat Harbour offers a diverse range of choice with underwater observation rooms, audio technology and qualified marine experts. From double-storey cruisers to twin-hulled catamarans the different sized vessels let you decide between an intimate experience and full-on excitement. You can make a day of it or head out for a morning or afternoon tour. The size and facilities of the vessels vary – what is assured are highly experienced crews who are well versed in whale habits and other wildlife that you might see in the bay including dolphins and turtles.
Whale welfare is paramount. Crews work to a strict code of conduct and although they stop the boats short of the pods, curious whales routinely approach, swimming right up to say Hello and introduce their calves.

Fraser Island – a fun learning environment The world’s largest sand pit makes a pretty interesting outdoor classroom – there are 1840 square kms of sand tracks to explore; it is one of the only places that rainforest grows in sand at elevations of 200 metres; it supports a fresh water aquifer that is approximately 40 times the size of Sydney Harbour and it is home to Australia’s purest strain of dingo. Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Kerry Brough, said interpretation of the environment is the key tenet of the resort’s environmental philosophy – so the development of a formal curriculum-based education program was the next logical step for the resort group.
“By combining the knowledge base of our Resort Ranger team with teacher’s curriculum requirements, we are able to deliver a custom-made program for students covering topics from Biology and Environmental disciplines as well as Hospitality, Leadership and Team Building from just $49 per student a day, she said. Win Renee Geyer’s new CD – SWING We have six copies of Swing, the long awaited Big Band studio album to give away to celebrate Renee’s 40 years in the music business. “You’re in for a fabulous surprise with this new album – it seems I’m one of the few women in the world to record my own Big Band album” Renee Geyer began her career as a sassy blues belter, now she’s the consummate entertainer with a proud body of work still transfixing audiences with the power of her voice – Swing is destined

Capture the market in Queensland’s richest mining towns Queensland’s cashed-up mining towns are the state’s most affluent post codes. In some towns, family incomes exceed $2,500 per week (Bureau of Statistics 2011 census). The Coalfields Express has serviced Queensland’s mining areas for 20 years and is the only newspaper home delivered into most of the mining towns, as well ell as into many mining camps camps.
July 27, 28 There’s nothing quite like the Childers Festival held every year on the last weekend in July. Featuring a myriad of performers, artists and bands and food from every corner of the world, the Childers Festival is the only one in Queensland which sees the Bruce Highway closed for the day. From early on Sunday, highway traffic is diverted to allow Churchill Street to be transformed into a gigantic food, market stall and entertainment hub. Over the years, the festival has fine-tuned the stalls to ensure that the very best of the Wide Bay and beyond have been selected. Cuisine from dozens of countries is available including Japanese, kebabs, Hungarian dishes and German sausages, while local eating establishments will provide the opportunity for sitdown meals. For first time festival visitors, the experience of wandering along the Leopard tree lined highway and down the side streets amidst heritage listed and historic buildings, is almost as exciting as the non-stop music, smorgasbord of food and party atmosphere which pulses throughout the day. The event kicks off with a street party
on Saturday at 2.00 p.m. with live entertainment well into the night while on Sunday the main action is from 9am to 3.30 pm. Car parking at reasonable rates near the site is available plus a shuttle service operating from further afield. More information from Events Coordinator Perry Bacon 1300 883 699.

Fossicking across the Gemfields Just 40 minutes from Emerald on your way to Longreach are the largest Sapphire fields in the world with 90% of the Sapphires on the market today originally coming from these fields. The Gemfields of Sapphire and Rubyvale are by far the greatest attraction during the Winter, Spring and Autumn months. The sapphire fields date back to 1875 when the first gem was found by a Railway Surveyor. Sapphires come in every colour of the rainbow. Sapphires called "parti-colours"
are multicoloured and red Sapphires are Rubies? You never know your luck! Visitors come from all over Australia, indeed the world to search for the blue, green, yellow and part-coloured and star sapphires that are found. Sapphire is just 10 kms north from Anakie (on the main highway west) on a sealed road and features caravan parks, cabins, shops, souvenirs, and gem cutters. You’ll catch fossicking fever when you visit Rubyvale, Sapphire, Anakie and Willows Gemfields where you’ll get tips

There will be 200 traders dealing in rough and cut sapphires, zircons, diamonds, opals and pearls plus spectacular jewellery. On the Capricorn Highway, west of the Anakie Gemfields is the township of Alpha, “Gateway to the West.” Major Thomas Mitchell, in 1846, described the area as having rich grassy plains and fragrant tropical air. Settlers moved in, and in 1884 the railway reached the area. Today the town has streets which have been named after poets. It has an interesting mix of historic and modern buildings, changed by fire, flood, and progress over the years. Alpha, taken from the Greek word meaning - "the beginning" - is claimed by locals as the beginning of the west, and also the entrance to the Central Highlands.
Outback Queensland’s tourism leaders descended on Brisbane to encourage Aussies to “promise” to visit an iconic Outback event this year like Gemfest. Ms Stuckey said events offer a great chance for visitors to experience the charm of Outback Queensland communities and make an important economic contribution to the regional economy. “There are about 200 annual events

April marks the 150th anniversary of the discovery of coal in the Howard, Torbanlea region by the Miller Brothers.
Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce and Tourism are celebrating their submission’s success in being chosen to host the Outback Queensland Tourism Awards and Symposium in November.
The first ever Festival to celebrate the discovery of coal in the area will be held July 20 and 21 and an enthusiastic Committee have organised a packed program for the combined community event encompassing the entire Burrum District.
Executive Officer Joyce McCulloch said “This is a huge deal for tourism for Mount Isa and the North West and to host the event in the year of Mount Isa’s 90th birthday makes it even more special.” Held from November 14 to 16 the event incorporates evening networking functions, symposium workshops, the Outback Tourism Association AGM and the hotly contested awards function.
The program put forward by Mount Isa included everything from sightseeing, underground mine experiences and celebrity guest appearances through to evening functions at uniquely “Mount Isan” attractions. If you are planning a visit to Mount Isa, Outback at Isa can help you plan your outback holiday.

Camel Balls? They’ve gotta be joking! Yes you read that correctly. Camel Balls are in shops now and look like the real thing – extra sour, delicious bubble gum balls, filled with a soft, gooey sour cherry centre. These special edition bubble gum balls are available in selected independent stores for only a limited time. Produced by Fini, one of Europe’s finest confectionary manufacturers, Camel Balls are distributed in Australia by CTC Australia, 100% family owned and operated. “These are one of our really quirky lines with attention grabbing packaging – when customers see them they do a double take or think it’s a printing error,” said Cameron Ogilvie, National Sales Manager. Maybe offensive to some, hilarious to others, Camel Balls are causing a global internet sensation with a viral phenomenon across social media.
