Largest reef on the planet The aptly named Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem and the largest living structure on the planet at 2300kms in length.

Putting it in perspective, Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia is 280km long and Belize Reef in the Caribbean, the second longest in the world is 300km.

Covering 344,400 sq km, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is bigger than the UK, Switzerland and Holland combined and slightly smaller than the entire Baltic Sea. Although famous for corals, they comprise just 7% of the Park and World Heritage Area.

As well as coral and fish, the Reef is home to turtles, crocodiles with tourism operators recording two million visits annually.

It begins at the tip of Cape York and ends just north of Bundaberg in the south east.

It was Australia’s first World Heritage area and its marine park was created in 1975. It earns Australia $5 to $6 billion per year and is critically important to mining as a shipping highway.

Why do men travel to the other side of the world to propose?

Why men feel compelled to travel to the other side of the world to propose remains one of life’s mysteries.

We would more happily ask the question over dinner in a local restaurant after taking the precaution of pre-loading with several cans of courage.

Instead, we find ourselves dropping to one knee beneath The Eiffel Tower or on the Spanish Steps and stammering our declarations of love and affection.

Herewith is a cautionary tale based on personal experience, for the benefit of

those planning to make this journey.

It dawned on me as I was packing that I had overlooked one small point – what to do with the engagement ring?

I had to keep it hidden from my partner but didn’t dare put it my checked luggage in case it went missing and if I put it in my cabin bag someone could steal it midflight as I slept.

I’d have to keep it in my jacket pocket.

This led to a tug of war when we boarded our flight with the cabin attendant determined to do her job and hang up my jacket and me equally determined to hold on to it. ``Let me take that, sir’’ she said. ``No, I’ll keep it,’’ I replied. ``It’s no trouble, sir’’ she said grabbing it. ``No,’’ I yelled, grasping at the bulge in the inside pocket in which sat a significantly sized diamond. ``I’ll keep it.’’

At this point she released her grip and I fell back into my seat clutching my jacket. ``Are you alright?’’ asked my partner. ``Fine,’’ I said. ``Any chance of a drink?’’

So we flew to Stockholm, which takes about 26 hours, with me holding my jacket and trying to ignore the suspicious looks of the cabin crew.

Once we had checked into our hotel I’d be fine. I’d put the ring in the room safe with our passports.

This would have worked if the room had

been equipped with a safe. We were there for five days and then taking a cruise on the Baltic Sea with the plan to propose on board but where to leave the ring in the meantime?

Hide it in my suitcase? What if someone broke into our room? What if the maid stole it?

I’d have to keep it on me. It’s worth noting that our stay in this lovely city coincided with a Swedish heat wave.

And so it was that for five days I trudged around Stockholm in my jacket with sweat running in rivulets down my body and one hand clutching the inside pocket and its precious bulge. ``Aren’t you hot?’’ asked my partner. ``No’’ I said wiping sweat out of my eyes. ``I’m fine.’’

We found a bar one night. Actually, we found one every night but this one was particularly good so we stayed on and had a few and then a few more.

The next morning, I opened my eyes very slowly and stared at the ceiling for several seconds before being struck by a thunderbolt of realization.

The ring! I’d had it my pocket. Was it possible I’d managed to lose it in the course of our night’s carousings? I stumbled out of bed and groped my jacket.

The bulge was still there. ``What are you doing?’’ moaned my

partner. ``Nothing,’’ I replied.

After five days we set sail on the Star Clipper, a four masted cruise ship bound for St Petersburg. There was a safe in our cabin and so for the first time in a week, I stashed the ring and took off my jacket.

It merely remained to choose the right golden, sunset moment to make my pitch.

It was a small ship of 110 passengers and after a couple of days, we’d made several new best friends which was nice. Unfortunately every time a golden moment offered itself, they appeared and started to chat. I got as far as ``Would you…’’ twice before being interrupted.

The stress was killing me.

Then, one afternoon, I maneuvered us into a quiet spot on the deck. We were leaning on the rail looking out across the Baltic. The ring was in my pocket. All I had to do was ease it out. If I fumbled it and it fell overboard, I’d jump in after it and not bother to swim.

Ten seconds later I had the ring on her finger. Even if she’d said ``No!’’ I would have given her the ring - anything to be rid of it.

Ian Fleming came from Christchurch A Canterbury man all my life I worked as a builder with my own business and spent 28 years in the metropolitan fire service.

Ten years ago, with a misguided belief that I was old enough to retire, I started searching for warmer climes. After many internet hours this place called Bundaberg in Queensland emerged and this is now my home.

With the fourth best climate in the world with 30 degree normal highs, things are as cheap as chips, and everything too good to be true. A flying visit with a full week of real estate agent brain picking and site visiting saw the purchase of acreage and a self designed house underway.

Most businesses I dealt with had Kiwis employed, with a large proportion in management positions. Kiwis despite the ragging were considered good workers.

Hhhaaa retirement....my son who came with me got a job at a nearby tomato grower and I tagged along to keep him motivated.. alas no retirement.

I then met Irene from Whangerei who later

became my wife. Irene worked at a restaurant overlooking the beautiful Bundaberg Port marina and after an offer we couldn’t refuse from the young owners, Irene and I became the proud owners of a licensed restaurant that, full of enthusiasm, we took to seven day trading.

I now have two of my children working for me, Irene has her two girls in Brisbane and we live on a boat in the marina, which means less travel time - idyllic .

After spending many South Island winters enjoying hunting, off roading and working in snow and sleet I now feel cold in anything under 20 degrees but can now plan a barbecue for any date knowing its going to be warm enough all night.

This is a huge change to the “lock down, keep warm, too cold or dark to go out” lifestyle of New Zealand with Queensland’s weather and sunshine enabling swimming all year round and much more to life, although I miss autumn, sausage rolls and hotdogs.

Aimee White of Tieri Originally it was my sister and I who had planned to move to Australia, but when she decided against it I came anyway on my own.

I left Tauranga just after my 25th birthday and now having just celebrated my 33rd birthday it marks eight years spent living in Queensland.

As a teenager I had holidayed with my parents in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

As I wanted to move to a large city I settled on Brisbane as I was vaguely familiar with it.

In my eight years spent in Queensland I have lived in Brisbane, Mackay, Gold Coast, Emerald and now a small mining town in the Central Highlands called Tieri. I have seen a lot of the East Coast of Australia as far south as Canberra and as far north as Port Douglas.

I met my husband Ben in Mackay – he is

originally from Mudgee NSW. Ben works in the coal mining industry. We are now based in Tieri and hope to raise a family here. I currently work as a mining assistant – escorting concrete trucks on and off the mine site. As most of my previous roles have been corporate and sales based I am enjoying working outside and wearing my steel caps and hard hat!

I would never have seen myself as a ‘country’ person but I love it out here!

I strongly believe in enjoying and making the most of any situation. Where we live it is not uncommon to see kangaroos at your back fence or hopping past the shops. Rodeos are often held in the larger neighbouring town of Emerald and if you drive an hour west you are able to fossick for sapphires.

I do struggle a little being away from the coast.

From where we are the coast is 3 ½ hours away and Airlie Beach (the gateway to the amazing Whitsundays) is four hours.

This may seem like a huge drive to New Zealanders but you get accustomed to driving much larger distances in Australia - for example my husband was driving eight hours to work at one stage!

Moving not just to a new city but a new country, acquiring a new job and making new friends forced me out of my shell!

It has definitely changed me as a person and was one of the best decisions of my life.

Malcolm Mitchell from Invercargill I first remember learning about Queensland while at school in my home town of Invercargill at the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island.

We were learning about the local Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter and how it relied on electricity produced in New Zealand and bauxite which was shipped from Gladstone, Queensland. I never dreamed that I would one day be married to a Queenslander.

I moved from Invercargill when I was 23 and after living in Christchurch for about two years I decided to move to Australia and chose the Gold Coast.

Some Australians mistakenly thought I had moved there so they could tell me sheep jokes but my real reason was for the greater opportunities Australia had to offer.

I worked in Southport and would walk past the bank where my future wife Karen worked but that’s not where we met as she wouldn’t work there for another 10 years.

How we met is another story but the similarities of our home towns (Bundaberg is hers and Invercargill) are uncanny.

Both cities are built on the flat, have one hill close by, have a farming community, have a nearby beach, have had a major flood and have a monument with a soldier on top in the middle of town.

They also both have a local legend named Herbert, Bert Hinkler the aviator was born in Bundaberg and Burt Munro the motorcycle racer.

We have been living in Melbourne for many years now but I still recall when I crossed the ditch in 1988.

No work permits were required then and getting work was easy but getting credit and constantly being reminded that I was from New Zealand was a challenge.

I have lived more than half my life in Australia now and my wife and I enjoy spending time in both countries, girt by sea.

Campbell Gradon of Tauranga In 2006 I headed off for a year or two to Ireland on my big OE. Its now 2015 and I never quite made it back home to New Zealand.

After four years of Ireland’s incessant rain and two years of Sydney’s overpriced cost of living, I grabbed the opportunity to move to Bundaberg and have been in the land of sugar cane, rum and ginger beer ever since.

You may laugh but I need 2 duvets on the bed now its winter when it gets below 15 degrees overnight. A far cry from my days at Otago university and the School of Pharmacy living in a house built in 1903 with ventilation being gaps in the walls straight to the outside.

I grew up in Tauranga and moving here felt like I had gone in a time warp back to Tauranga of the 80's - but with better wages, warmer weather and a huge array of fresh produce to chose from at the local markets or the many roadside stalls.

I'm an active patrolling member of the Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club and love spending summer in, on and around the water.

A favourite moment here was watching my friend catch a one metre long tuna 400 metres out to sea in front of my house, dragging his kayak about a kilometre before it eventually tired.

My wife and children are Australian and I guess I'm becoming one too, until the two countries meet on the sporting field that is. Now my mission is to get the locals to start growing Feijoas. Every year I make a pilgrimage to the Sunshine Coast to a Feijoa orchard just to get my fix.

While Bundaberg and Bargara aren't on the typical itinerary for visitors to Australia, I highly recommend the trip. I'd love some of my friends from back home to visit, so I can show them why I love it here so much.

SS Maheno bell rings out again

The SS Maheno, named after the South Island rural town, served as a hospital ship during World War I for Australian and New Zealand soldiers.

When Anzacs were transferred to the French western front, the Maheno transported soldiers from bloody battles in Fromelles and the Somme.

On Anzac Day this year, a replica of the Maheno’s bell rung out at a special Anzac Day ceremony on Fraser Island, where the Maheno ran aground in 1935.

Seven students from Maheno School travelled to Fraser Island for the service by the shipwreck, joined by about 150 tourists and campers to hear young Thomas Ballantyne ring the bell.

“These children, in 20 years time are going to be carrying on the Anzac tradition of organising services and passing on the values to their

children,” said Ryan Fraser, Principal of Maheno School which obtained the bell in 1967 from the Union Steam Ship Company.

“It hasn’t been rung for years and the students were very excited about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“Sacred item” replicas cast Peter Olds from Olds Engineering foundry where two replicas were cast (one for Fraser Island, the other for Brisbane’s Maritime Museum) said the bell was a sacred item and a significant bond between New Zealand and Australia.

The New Zealand government granted permission for the original SS Maheno ship’s bell to be taken out of the country to the Fraser Coast, where the famous shipwreck remains a tourist attraction on world-heritage listed Fraser Island.
