International Rugby League will return to South-East Queensland this year with Brisbane and the Gold Coast set to host a blockbuster stand-alone weekend of representative rugby league in May. In a huge coup for NRL fans in Queensland, Suncorp Stadium will host the traditional Trans-Tasman Test Match between Australia and New Zealand, supported by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), on Friday May 1. The Test is the only international match between the Kangaroos and the Kiwis in 2015. The Test Match will be a key game in rugby league's program of events to commemorate the 100th

anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. May 1 also sees the Australian Jillaroos take on the NZ Kiwi Ferns at Suncorp Stadium, while Pacific powerhouses Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and Papua New Guinea will be part of a tripleheader at Gold Coast's Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday May 2. The first match on Saturday night (May 2) will feature the Junior Kangaroos against the Junior Kiwis. The PNG Kumuls will then take on Fiji Bati, before Samoa return to the international stage following their successful Four Nations campaign against traditional rivals Tonga.

Fraser Island / Hervey Bay Whales encounters of the best kind

Fraser Island- largest sand island in the world

From July to November set your course for our Whale Watching Capital, Hervey Bay and experience the best up close and personal whale encounters in the world – yes, world! What makes this whale watching unique, is that the whales are as friendly as the locals. It’s where whales actually stop, take time to play, literally “meet and greet” visitors – because they’re delighted to see you. Every year an estimated 13,000 humpbacks migrate from Antarctica to the warm waters of the Whitsundays to breed. Between late July and early November they bring their calves to Hervey Bay for some fun – and to see you. Whether you have only a few hours or can’t resist taking the whole day, Hervey Bay’s whale watching is a truly unforgettable experience and humbling at the same time – don’t miss it.

It’s the largest sand island in the world and seemingly a contradiction of natural conventions. Rainforests need high rainfall and rich soil to thrive but for the past 800,000 years rich rainforests have defied Mother Nature to call Fraser Island home. See untouched freshwater lakes and creeks, including rare dune lakes. Wetlands, heath decorated with wildflowers and towering rainforest trees all thrive from nothing more than sand. Self Drive – accessible by 4WD only. All roads are sand tracks. Take your own vehicle or hire from Hervey Bay, Kingfisher Bay Resort, Rainbow Beach and Brisbane. Off-road campers allowed, but caravans discouraged. One, two and three-day escorted 4WD tours depart from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and major island resorts. By Barge – Vehicular barges and passenger ferries operate regular services from River Heads, and Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach). Phone 1800 072 555 Aboriginal Heritage – Fraser Island continues to be a culturally significant place for the Butchella people. It was the island’s food resources that prompted them to name it K’Gari meaning paradise. ANZAC - 100 YEARS On 25 April 2015 we mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Anzac Day is a very special day both in Australia and New Zealand. The anniversary of the Anzac Day is probably Australia and New Zealand's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by New Zealand and Australian forces during the First World War. On 25th of April 1915, forces landed on Gallipoli so 25th of April became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of soldiers who had died in the war.

Anzac Day on Fraser Island

by Sherry Barnes Fraser Island's famous SS Maheno shipwreck will play a pivotal role in the ANZAC Day centenary commemorations in the region when the ship’s bell will be rung by students from Maheno School in New Zealand. Rotary Clubs are funding the passage of seven students – DeArna Mooney, Libby Robb, Fenella Ballantyne, Thomas Ballantyne, Clark Ewing, Joshua Kinnaird, Kase Robb – their parents and Principal Ryan Fraser from Maheno School to take part in the ceremony when they will ring the bell. The SS Maheno, named after the tiny rural town in the South Island was originally built as a luxury cruise liner operating on the trans-Tasman run between Australia and New Zealand. During World War I the liner was converted to a hospital ship and a few months after the Gallipoli campaign started, was anchored offshore serving as a floating hospital for thousands of Australian and several hundred New Zealand soldiers. When ANZACS were transferred to the French western front, the Maheno was there to transport soldiers from particularly bloody battles in Fromelles and the Somme.

“Hasn’t been rung for years” Principal Ryan Fraser of Maheno School (which obtained the bell in 1967 from the Union Steam Ship Company) told the Otago Daily Times it used to be the actual school bell and rung numerous times daily. “It was retired some years ago and hanging in the school hallway – it hasn’t been rung for years so that will be really special with the students very excited about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said. “The way I see it, these children, in 20 years time are going to be carrying on the Anzac tradition of organizing services and passing on the values to their children.” Thomas Ballantyne and Joshua Kinnaird, both 12 are looking forward to swimming in the ocean on their first trip to Australia and Clark Ewing said he

was eager to hear other people’s stories about the Maheno and seeing the wreck - “because it will be huge.”

Replicas being cast The bell is already at Olds Engineering foundry in Maryborough on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, where replicas are being cast. One will go to Fraser Island, the other to Brisbane’s Maritime Museum. Peter Olds from the foundry told Fraser Coast Chronicle the bell is “a sacred item”. “This ship is quite a legend, a significant item of the bond between New Zealand and Australia which started in World War I and how the ANZAC name came about.” In 1935, the decommissioned and stripped Maheno ran aground at Cathedral Beach on Fraser Island while being towed from Australia. Attempts to refloat the ship were unsuccessful and it was left abandoned on what is now known as 75 Mile Beach. After being rung by the Maheno students at the site of the shipwreck on Anzac Day, the bell will be returned home to the school.

On display for Anzac Day Renowned wildlife artist Owen Pointon’s painting Dingoes Guard The Wreck will feature in a special Anzac Day display at Happy Valley Resort on Fraser Island. There is also a limited edition print on display at the Hervey Bay Visitor Information Centre until the end of May. “I painted this especially for Anzac Day,” said Owen. “The ship is the SS Maheno which was actually a hospital ship for the New Zealand Armed Forces at Gallipoli, and of course the dingoes are symbolic of the island – they’re magnificent creatures.” Owen’s work will be on regular display at the Visitor Centre from now on. “Fallen Youth” – to honour unnamed soldier by Sherry Barnes New Zealand born Jackie Bristow has released a new single commemorating the ANZAC spirit for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. “Fallen Youth” draws its lyrics from the poem of an unnamed ANZAC soldier found in the public library of her hometown of Gore. Now based in Los Angeles after a long stint in Australia, Jackie performs the song as part of her live act. “Jackie Bristow is one of those “oughta be more famous” artists with an uncommon command of her art and craft” (Santa Barbara New Press). “The poem speaks from the heart of an ANZAC soldier and that’s the emotion I try to get across. It feels good to sing it, to tell a story for all the world’s soldiers,” said Jackie. Her childhood friend, Kiwi soldier Aaron Horrell carried the poem with him for 20 years before asking Jackie to turn it into a song. Aaron served two tours in East Timor, two in Afghanistan and worked in private security in the Kandahar and Helmand provinces. “The poem is very special to me,” said Aaron. “The words have rung true many times when I lost comrades and I’m sure they will continue to ring true for years to come.” Like to hear the song…..go to coastlinenews.com.au.

Jackie’s Aussie connection At once heartfelt and sophisticated, Jackie combines subtle and beautiful melodies with hooks that hypnotise her audiences the world over.

She has opened for many international stars including Bonnie Raitt, Tommy Emmanuel, Rick Springfield, Bob Schneider and Art Garfunkel. Her songs have featured in New Zealand and Australian films and TV shows including The Secret Life Of Us, Home And Away, Go Girls and Shortland Street. Her song “This is Australia” won a Tourism Australia song competition and featured in a worldwide promotional campaign. See www. jackiebristow.com

Discovering ANZAC ancestors To commemorate the centenary of the Gallilpoli landing, Ancestry has released 12 million new records to help Aussies uncover information about brave ancestors. Did you know only 29% of Australians know ANZAC stands for “Australian and New Zealand Army Corps” with confusion over the last two words. Some respondents to the Ancestry survey replaced “Army” with Air, Auxiliary or Armed and “Corps” was WWW.TOURISTQUEENSLAND.COM

replaced with Command, Core or Coalition.

The new service records now available to Ancestry members give much greater access to information on those who served during WWI, awards won, details on wounded and fallen Anzac heroes, enlistment, illnesses, promotions and more.

The West

Central West – Matilda Country The Central West’s story spans millions of years and its rich tapestry continues to this day. Near the town of Winton, fossil discoveries are being made that were previously unknown to science, in what is being termed a ‘fossil rush’. Join the Queensland Museum teams on a dig as a volunteer and learn more about the areas prehistoric roots. If you’re more into ballads than bones, Winton is also considered to be 0the home of Australian bush poetry and the iconic ballad by Banjo Paterson, ‘Waltzing Matilda’. There is even an entire museum (the Matilda Centre) dedicated to the poem. The Central West allows you to walk in the footsteps of those who shaped the cultural heritage of our nation. The pastoral industry, great Australian innovations and the triumph

of the human spirit over adversity are the threads that weave their way through Australian identity to this day. Learn more about how our nation took flight at the Qantas Founders Museum and explore our outback heritage at the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame. And as always, a huge part of this story is also the landscape. Bladensburg National Park just 17km from Winton offers spectacular views across vast grasslands as you stand on flattopped mesas. You can also hide from the heat of the day under the shade of giant gum trees on the banks of the rivers that meander across the plains. After rain, you’ll see wild flowers blossom amongst the spindly Spinifex grass.

A must see on a visit to Longreach is the Stockmans Hall of Fame.

OUTBACK FESTIVAL - They’re Back! It’s Goanna Be Great!

The ships of the desert are returning (as they do every two years) to the Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races from July 31 to August 2. Tara, population less than 1,000 is 3.5 hours west of Brisbane and explodes with excitement during this three-day festival which draws over 11,000 – the classic country event with multicultural twist. There’s buskers, different cuisines, workshops, non-stop entertainment, bush poetry, yabby races and of course camel races on both days. Camping is free at the Tara Showgrounds as well as Tent City already set up for visitors.

The Bravehearts ran a good race in the last Dunny Derby. Pack in five days of fun at the Outback Festival at Winton, 22 to 26 September. The famous town, home of the Waltzing Matilda song welcomes you to the biennial genuine Outback Eventure, with lashings of quirky stuff served up with warm hospitality.
