How Long Do You Have to Live Here to be Considered an Islander?

ecently the question of, “How long do you have to live here to be considered an Islander,” was brought up in a Facebook discussion. I chimed in essentially saying the following: My Grandparents homesteaded here in the San Juan Islands in 1918, five generations of our family ago. “To me, being an Islander isn’t about how long you’ve lived here, it’s about the kind of person you are. Are you a good person? Do you care about your fellow Islanders? Do you care about the Islands? Are you considerate and respectful to all? Those are the kind of things that make a true Islander, in my opinion.” I got a lot of *likes*, thank you’s, and positive comments so I thought that subject might be a good thing to write about as the introduction to this years Coldwell Banker San Juan Islands, Inc. Real Estate Showcase. There are others in our office with deep local roots, or connections to deep local roots, so I thought I’d see what their opinions are too. Like many in our office, Paula Sundstrom has been part of the Coldwell Banker San Juan Islands, Inc. family for over 20 years. In fact, Paula has been with us for 31 years! Paula’s ancestors arrived here in 1864 and began farming San Juan Valley. When I was growing up Paula’s immediate family and a bunch of her relatives had large farms throughout the valley. Paula, and some of her cousins are still farming the valley today. When I posed the subject question to Paula, she said: “I agree wholeheartedly with Steve on his comments. Historically the island has always attracted fiercely independent people who are self-reliant and resourceful, yet are always ready to help a neighbor in need. When you start being part of our community, then you become an islander.”

Then I asked my older, and much wiser brother, Sam, the same question. ) Sam is, in my biased opinion, the quintessential Islander, per my description above. Sam said: (Sam likes it when people ask which one of us is older

“How long DO you have to live here to be CONSIDERED A REAL Islander? Islanders tend to be independent, as well as interdependent when the need arises. Each island seems to have the ability to call to those who are a good match for that islands’ personality. For some it can be for generations, for others it may be until they have been “filled up,” by the good island energy, or until they are called away to serve a higher calling, like being with their grandchildren. So who is a real islander? Those who feel the “connection,” and recognize it in others. ” Michele Mayer is our Designated Managing Broker (the person responsible for overseeing all Coldwell Banker San Juan Islands, Inc. real estate listings and purchase and sale agreements, as well as all the excellent Real Estate Brokers and Staff here),

Michele’s significant other is Matt Chevalier. You wouldn’t know it by his last name, but his fishing family roots go so deep they pre-date any written history about the San Juan Islands! Matt’s ancestors are originally from the band of the Coastal Salish Tribe and were primarily located in the area now called Mitchell Bay, on San Juan Island. They also have much history on Spieden, Stuart, Waldron and other islands. As family lore goes, Matt’s Great, Great Grandfather married a Haida Princess. The Haida are a tribe from the far north off the coast of what is now British Columbia, Canada. The Haida would come down on raiding parties in the summer to these islands, now named the San Juan Islands, that are within the Salish Sea. The Haida would also harvest shellfish, salmon and 2

other food. The Princess’s father, the Chief of the Haida, did not approve of their marriage so they had to run away and hide in order to be together. Eventually, the Haida would have to give up searching and return home before the weather changed. So during the winters Matt’s Great, Great Grandfather and his Princess wife would be able to live amongst other locals (tribal and otherwise), and every summer, when the Haida returned, they would have to hide again. Matt’s Aunt Marge, who also happened to be our neighbor, a close family friend, as well as my Dad’s secretary for many years, told Matt she remembered hiding as a little girl at Deer Harbor on Orcas Island in the summers. I’ve known Matt since we were little boys. He comes from the nicest family. Most of them still commercial fish today. I didn’t know my Dad’s dad, and barely knew my Mom’s dad. “Grandpa Chevalier,” (Matt’s Grandfather), sort of felt like a stand in to me. He would often sit on the bench in front of what is now Hailey’s Sports Bar and Grill (where the name Hailey’s comes from is a whole “nuther” story). Often, when I would walk to town, for instance to see my Dad at his office (San Juan Properties, Inc, the predecessor to Coldwell Banker San Juan Islands, Inc.), Grandpa Chevalier would be sitting on the bench and I would go sit with him. (One of the many great things about living here is that kids still can, and do, walk to town from school or home without fear of anything.)

Grandpa Chevalier was always very kind to me, saying “Hi,” whenever he saw me. He would also ask me how I’m doing and talk about other things with me. He had huge strong hands (likely from generations of pulling fishing nets), that could have easily crushed mine, but he always shook my hand very gently. To this day he is still the only known non-native child to have been born on Pearl Island. Hence, his name, William Pearl Chevalier. Getting back to the subject question, I thought, who could be more of an authority on, "How Long Do You Have To Live Here To Be Considered An Islander," than a Chevalier? So I asked Matt, and this is what he said: “I really think to become a true islander it takes some time to settle into the daily routine of the island. Some people get it right away, for some it takes longer and some never do.” Matt’s brother Marty said: “Being an Islander is not measured in time, it's more about when you find 'your crowd' and become part of a community.” Per what Marty said, just so you know, there are a lot of things you can do to get involved and become a part of the community. In fact, the number one reason why people move back here is because of the sense of community they find here that they haven’t found elsewhere (check out sanjuanislands.com for more information). What is consistent in each of these opinions is that it’s not about how long you have to live here to be an islander, it’s about the kind of person you are and the efforts you put into it.

FRIDAY HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL offers a wide-ranging variety of educational programs and extensive co-curricular opportunities for students. In addition, the San Juan Island community raises hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships every year! In 2020, the Friday Harbor High School Aerospace Team competed within the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) and positioned themselves in 2nd Place. In 2019, the Friday Harbor High School Aerospace Team was positioned in 1st place, a World Championship Title, within the International Space Settlement Design Competition. In 2020, Friday Harbor Elementary School STEM Team won a competitive science award. Many families relocate to the San Juan Islands specifically due to our school system, family activities/sports, performing arts, and a safe environment to raise children. As we are a small community, any parent is allowed to contact the Superintendents or Principals to discuss our school system.

San Juan Historical Museum

San Juan Historical Museum The San Juan Historical Museum is located on the momentous landmark of James F. King Farmstead, only a few blocks away from the Friday Harbor Ferry Landing. The James King farmhouse was originally built in 1894 by James F. King. In 1966, the farmhouse was donated by the new owner and local resident George Peacock to the Historical Society to use as a museum. The San Juan Historical Museum and San Juan Historical Society illuminate the life story of the peoples of San Juan Island from the 19th century to the early 20th century. Visit the original ounty jail, which was deemed “the worst jail in the state of Washington,” from 1894 to 1971. Walk through historic buildings, as the San Juan Historical Society conserves the exhibits for future generations to come. San Juan Island Sculpture Park in Roche Harbor The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park features over 150 outdoor art creations by notorious and undiscovered sculptors from all around the world. San Juan Island Jackson’s Beach Located just two miles from the Friday Harbor Ferry Landing via Argyle Avenue and Pear Point Road, Jackson’s Beach is the perfect place for a picnic gathering or exploring the beach for treasure! Check out the three picnic sites with fire pits and barbeque grills, beach volleyball courts, restrooms, an abundance of fee parking spaces, and free boat launch into the North Bay Water. Enjoy the sunshine and beachy atmosphere during normal park hours from dusk till dawn. South Beach South Beach is the longest public beach within the San Juan Islands, covering two miles of pebble, sand, and driftwood coastline in the San Juan Island National Historical Park. Located about seven miles from the town of Friday Harbor via Cattle Point Road, South beach is a delightful place to enjoy a stroll below the expansive golden hills where eagles and hawks soar, rabbits nibble, and foxes’ hunt. Start a campfire and lounge at a picnic table while looking out towards the Olympic Mountain Range and a beautiful sunset sky. Fourth of July Beach Fourth of July Beach is a much quieter and less populated beach with a small picnic area and forested trail to hike along. Travel about 7 miles out of the Town of Friday Harbor via Cattle Point Road and you will find Fourth of July Beach located within the San Juan Island National Historical Park, near South Beach. If you walk far enough down the driftwood filled shoreline you will eventually get to Jackals Lagoon! Eagle Cove If you take Cattle Point Road 7 miles out of the Town of Friday Harbor, you will find the turn to Eagle Cove just before the American Camp Visitors Center. Tucked away in a beautiful residential neighborhood on the South end of San Juan Island, take a small hike to get down to Eagle Cove Beach Access and you will find San Juan Island’s most popular sandy beach! San Juan County Park The San Juan County Park is located about ten miles from Friday Harbor or Roche Harbor on the west side of San Juan Island, on West Side Road. San Juan County Park offers campsites, day park access, picnic areas, trails, restrooms, boat launch, fishing, fire pits, grills, and beach access that overlooks Haro Strait. Reservations for Summer Camping (MaySeptember) are strongly encouraged at this very popular campground. Dead Man’s Bay On West Side Road, about 10 miles from Friday Harbor or Roche Harbor, you will find a charming and serene bay with a pebble stone beach and tide pools to explore. Hike along a short trail from the Lime Kiln State Park to Dead Man’s Bay or drive and park at the top of the bay. Keep an eye out for marine mammals passing by in the neighboring ocean and bring shoes with good traction when walking down the steep forested hillside. Jakle’s Beach Lagoon On Cattle Point Road, just south of Fourth of July Beach, you will find Jakle’s Lagoon. Locate the small parking lot positioned on the left side of Cattle Point Road when you are coming from the Town of Friday Harbor. Start from the parking lot down the one mile hiking trail, looking out toward Griffin Bay, to then explore the lagoon itself, Fourth of July Beach, and Mount Finlayson.

Lopez ISLAND Odlin County Park Odlin County Park is located just one mile from the Lopez Island Ferry Landing, or three miles from Lopez Village. Explore the 80-acre waterfront recreational park with 30 campsites, group camping, boat launch, all day dock access, a sandy beach, hiking trails, picnic tables, fire pits, grills, and a full-sized ball field. Enjoy the picturesque island experience with scenic views looking out to Shaw Island. Agate Beach County Park Agate Beach is on the southernmost point of Lopez Island looking out towards Iceberg Point, located just about 12.5 miles from the Lopez Island Ferry Landing via Center Road. Comb the beach for agates or enjoy the sandy beach at low tide. Agate Beach faces west, which means you will have a prime view of the sunset. Spencer Spit Spencer Spit, located just over 4 miles away from the Lopez Island Ferry Landing via Ferry Road, offers spectacular east facing views of Decatur and Blakely Islands. Spencer Spit highlights a rare sand spit surrounded by a salt-chuck lagoon. The State Park offers two miles of hiking trails, kayak rentals, moorage, private campsites, crabbing, clamming, saltwater fishing, swimming, diving, and wildlife viewing. Fisherman Bay and Bayview Day Park Located in Fisherman Bay, 5 miles from the Lopez Island ferry Landing via Ferry Road and Fisherman Bay Road, you will find the Bayview Day Park and accommodations. This sweet bay will lead you to Bayview Day Park where you can enjoy the newly remodeled swing set! Enjoy hotel accommodations, fabulous restaurants, and a lovely marina in Fisherman’s Bay. Watmough Bay Watmough Bay is located on Lopez Island’s southeast corner, just about 14 miles from Lopez Island Ferry Landing via Center Road and Mud Bay Road. The bay opens east with spectacular views looking out toward Rosario Strait, Fidalgo Island, Mount Baker, and Boulder Island being closest and to the right of the bay! There is a lovely pebble beach at the head of the bay, hundreds of acres of reservation and parkland, and trails that lead eastward toward a parking lot with public restrooms.

Orcas ISLAND North Beach Public Access The North Beach is located at the northernmost point of Orcas Island, just about 10 miles north of the Orcas Island Ferry Landing via Orcas Road. Rent kayaks on the beach and launch into the water for a paddling adventure out to the other nearby islands, such as Sucia Island, Patos Island or Matia Island. Or choose to relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the outer islands from the land. Obstruction Pass State Park Obstruction Pass State Park is just over 18 miles away from the Orcas Island Ferry Landing via Orcas Road and Olga Road. Obstruction Pass State Park is a 76-acre camping park on the south end of Orcas Island with access to more than one mile of publicly owned saltwater shoreline. Hike over 1.8 miles of trails, enjoy the campground firepits, picnic tables, and restrooms as you explore the beach and view wildlife.

Recreation Island Style

f you are looking for recreation programs for you or your family, fun community events, or classes for learning a new skill on San Juan Island, look no further than your local park and rec district! San Juan Island Park & Recreation District – known locally as “Island Rec,” has been serving San Juan Island residents since 1984. Island Rec provides robust recreation programming and maintains several parks, including the community athletic fields and walking trail at John O. Linde Community Park. Approximately 80% of funding for Island Rec comes from a voter-supported property tax levy, with the remainder of costs covered by participant fees and grants/donations. In a unique and necessary partnership, Island Rec also covers all costs for the high school athletics program to ensure local youth have the opportunity to participate in sports.

In addition to year-round recreation programming for all ages, Island Rec offers a daily after-school program for K-5th grade, the free Music on the Lawn summer concert series, and a myriad of events that have become woven into the fabric of the San Juan Island community. The summer adult soccer league and the Friday Harbor 8.8k Run are local favorites. During the colder months, residents enjoy nightly indoor pickleball, basketball, roller hockey and more. Island Rec’s dedicated parks team operates and maintains several parks on the island that are free and open to the public daily.

The FAIRGROUNDS FAMILY PARK features a playground and covered shelter area with picnic tables and a large barbecue. It is located within the San Juan County Fairgrounds and is popular with residents and visitors.

LAFARGE OPEN SPACE is a primitive area that is open dawn to dusk for walking on the graded roadways. More commonly known as “The Gravel Pit” from its former use, the one-mile walking loop at Lafarge offers scenic views of Griffin Bay and Shipyard Cove, just outside of town.

Adjacent to the Family Park is the ISLAND REC SKATE PARK, which was completed in 1999 with hundreds of hours of volunteer labor and has since provided many island families with the opportunity to learn to skateboard.

Island Rec’s newest park is JOHN O. LINDE COMMUNITY PARK. The park offers first-class athletic fields, a playground, field house, and paved walking/running loop. Linde Park has become the home fields for the island’s youth sports teams and is a gathering place for the community. Completion of the park is the result of a decades-long community dream that has finally been fulfilled through many collaborative efforts.

EDDIE & FRIENDS DOG PARK on Mullis Street is a two-acre park offering a completely fenced off-leash area, with a separate fenced area for small and/ or older dogs. Many residents and their canine companions are daily visitors to the park. PHOTOS BY MONICA BENNETT

Mount Grant Preserve

8 The Mount Grant Preserve* is the newest hiking acquisition on the island. It’s 5 miles from town on West Valley Road, marked with a thermometer-type sign showing the progress of fund-raising for its acquisition. Two paved roads almost make a loop to the top (exception is about 100 ft. of narrow, slippery dirt trail near the top on one side). The main paved road is open to vehicles on publicly-announced dates, and both are open every day to hikers, bikers, and horse riders. It was jointly acquired by the San Juan Preservation Trust and the County Land Bank.

Jackson’s Beach and Lafarge Open Space 26 Jackson’s Beach* is an ideal place for a picnic or beachcombing just 2 miles from the ferry landing. Amenities include beach volleyball courts, restrooms, plenty of parking spaces, a free boat launch, and 3 picnic sites complete with fire rings and BBQ grills. 27 Lafarge Open Space*, better known as the gravel pit, is located across Pear Point Road from Jackson’s Beach. This area is undeveloped and activity is limited to walking on the graded roadways only. Off-leash dogs allowed per county ordinance 19-2006.

THE LAND BANK STORY SAN JUAN COUNTY, 1990: Land development and tourism were on the rise, and the County’s population was rapidly growing. Facing the loss of places they loved, a diverse group of locals sought for a way to save their treasured open spaces and maintain their quality of life. Their collective vision led to the creation of the San Juan County Citizens Conservation Land Bank. The Conservation Land Bank is charged with preserving exceptional places in the islands, guided by local input. A one-time 1% real estate excise tax, paid by purchasers of property at closing, funds the program. In this way the community, through the Conservation Land Bank, has the ability to purchase and thereby protect the places that make the islands such a special place to visit, raise a family, retire. This investment in community space has paid off in spades. Since its inception thirty years ago, the Conservation Land Bank has protected close to 7,700 acres. The portfolio includes some of the archipelago’s most celebrated places: Westside Preserve on San Juan, Turtleback Mountain on Orcas and the Fisherman Bay Preserves on Lopez. When possible, areas with significant wildlife habitat and community value are purchased and turned into preserves. The Land Bank stewards forests and grasslands, tidelands, 12 different beaches and have designated 50 miles of trails. The Land Bank also manages over 60 conservation easements on private lands. These easements safeguard sweeping views of the sea, family farmlands and waterfowl-rich wetlands. This is a community that prioritizes open space and strives to provide and protect farms, forests, shores and scenic vistas now and for the generations to come. Welcome!

THE SAN JUAN PRESERVATION TRUST

he San Juan Preservation Trust is a private, nonprofit, nationally accredited land trust devoted to helping individuals and communities conserve land in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. It was established in 1979 by a group of island citizens. The Preservation Trust is governed by a 15- to 21-member Board of Trustees, who are legally obligated to administer the land for the purpose of preservation. Board members represent each of the four major San Juan Islands (San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and Shaw Island), as well as other outer islands in the archipelago.

The organization’s 16 staff members are united by a passion and desire to protect the natural legacy of the San Juan Islands for future generations to come. The Preservation Trust offers a volunteer program that encourages active participation in efforts to conserve treasured island sites and landscapes. The organization aims to provide volunteers with an experience that is enjoyable, educational, and worthwhile. The Preservation Trust collectively works with landowner partners and member/supporters to forever protect and care for more than 300 properties, which include 50 miles of shoreline, 25 miles of trails and 19,000 acres on 21 islands. Most of this land belongs to private landowners and is not open to the public. The map highlights nature preserves that are open for public visitation, with some limitations. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the San Juan Preservation Trust receives no tax revenue and depends exclusively on charitable donations

to preserve the San Juan Islands. As an accredited land trust, the organization is committed to financial transparency and the highest standards of ethical governance. The San Juan Preservation Trust tax ID/ EIN is 91-1078355. The mission of this Preservation Trust is to conserve, care for, and connect people with the land of the San Juan Islands. To conserve the natural beauty, essential ecosystems, and unique character of the San Juan Islands for future generations, the Trust creates legal agreements, called conservation easements, that permanently limit uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. To care for the lands and waters under its protection and with its partners (which include the San Juan County Land Bank), the Preservation Trust’s stewardship staff manage the retained nature preserves, monitor the conservation easements held, and renovate damaged or neglected lands that are protected by the trust. To connect people to nature, to each other, and to the Preservation Trust, they encourage collaboration, education, and outreach to further their core values. American Camp

English Camp

American Camp is located on the southern tip of San Juan Island. Take a 15 minute drive via Cattle Point Road from the Town of Friday Harbor and you will reach American Camp. In the summer of 1859, the “Pig War” was initiated after an American Settler shot a British pig on the Island that both nations claimed. The “Pig War” is referring to the 12 year long peaceful standoff between American and British soldiers and settlers. The American Army and the British Royal Navy jointly lived on San Juan Island in the mid-1800s. American soldiers lived at Camp San Juan Island, today known as American Camp, from July 1859 through November 1874.

English Camp is located about 15 minutes, or 9 miles, from the Town of Friday Harbor via Beaverton Valley Road, then West Valley Road. You will find the well signed entrance to English Camp on your left after passing Yacht Haven Road. If you are coming from Roche Harbor on the North end of the island, English Camp is only 5 miles away, or around 7 minutes, via Roche Harbor Road and West Valley Road. Although this land is technically a National Park, no permits are required to park here when visiting. There is a bike rack, bathrooms, and parking for approximately 25 cars. Dogs are allowed to join you if kept on a leash.

As of Spring 2021, a new facility that has been under construction is now complete to greet visitors with state of the art exhibits, books, and guides to island history and wildlife. Ranger programs are available during the main visitor season from June to September. Ranger-led nature and history walks will be taking place on weekends from June through August of 2021. At American Camp, you will find some historical points of interest, including a fortress and lookout called the Redoubt, a small artifact museum, and historic buildings. Continue through American Camp and you will notice several miles of trails that will take you through grassy prairies scattered with rocky outcrops. Walk down to South Beach, the longest public beach in the San Juan Islands. Enjoy the fantastic views from South Beach over the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains. Find other trails that will lead you up the 285-foot Mount Finlayson with views of Cattle Point Lighthouse. From Mount Finlayson follow the trail down to Jake’s Lagoon and Fourth of July Beach. American Camp holds residence of more than 200 species of migratory birds, and is home to a nesting pair of bald eagles, an abundance of red foxes, orcas, and other marine mammals that are frequent visitors to the waters off South Beach.

On June 15, 1859, the “Pig War” was initiated, which led to a peaceful 12-year joint British and United States occupation of San Juan Island while the two nations argued over who owned the San Juans. At the north end of the Island, the Royal Marines lived at the English Camp. Today, a few buildings, a formal garden, and a cemetery remain at the English Camp grounds. This beautiful day-use park on the shores of Garrison Bay includes a small, seasonal visitors’ center, providing information on the history and wildlife of English Camp. Explore the trails that range from a fairly strenuous hike up Young Hill to the cemetery and beyond to an easy 45-minute loop through woodland and along the bay. On Saturdays from June through August, park rangers and volunteers recreate some of the skills of military and civilian life during the island’s early pioneer period. For an entire weekend in July, the park hosts a reenactment of life in the mid-19th-century camp.

Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm Mussels & Linguine ( serves approx. 4-5 )

Ingredients

2 pounds mussels 1 pound linguine 3-4 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 3/4 to 1 cup dry white wine 4-8 cloves garlic (or to taste), minced 1 large shallot, minced 1/3 cup fresh basil, chiffonade 1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese (with some reserved for garnish)

Instructions Wash the mussels well and remove beards and/or barnacles. In a large pot bring salted water to boil. Cook linguine to just before al dente. When you initially drop the linguine it's time to . . . Heat butter and olive oil in a large sauté pan or pot with lid (large enough to fit the mussels). Add garlic and shallots and cook until translucent and

fragrant (depending on heat source 2-5 minutes). Add wine, 1/2 of the basil to the pan, simmer for 1 minute. Add mussels and simmer in the white wine sauce until the shells open which indicates that they are fully cooked (from 4-6 minutes), discard any that don't open. When linguine is just before al dente, strain and stir into the mussels and white wine sauce. Add parmesan cheese and cream. Simmer for 4-5 minutes, covered, while the sauce thickens. Stir one or two times, add remaining basil just prior to serving. Serve with fresh parmesan and cracked red pepper if desired. Bon Appetit! Recipe Courtesy:

Island History THE HISTORY OF SAN JUAN ISLAND is a long one, despite what may be described in introductory descriptions of this unique island community. For thousands of years, Native people from Coast Salish communities have lived in the San Juan Islands. Then during the mid19th century, Great Britain and the U.S., both challenged by a limited understanding of this area’s geography, each claimed all the San Juan Islands but did agree upon a compromise international boundary in “the strait.” But there are two straits. This dispute led to what is called the Pig War crisis, when each nation sent troops to the island to defend its territory. An impartial tribunal decided in favor of the U.S. in 1872, which is why San Juan Island is now an American island. This era is interpreted and commemorated by today’s San Juan Island National Historical Park.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Friday Harbor to its list of a “Dozen Distinctive Destinations,” while noting it’s the only historic seaport town on the west coast which has never been destroyed by fire. Today, the San Juan Historical Museum has been welcoming islanders and visitors alike to its campus since 1966, on property that had once been the core of the James and Adeline King Farm, Friday Harbor’s last remaining homestead farm. The Museum represents a distinct island culture of resilience and independence, sharing stories from the island’s four major historical industries — farming, fishing, logging, and lime quarrying and processing. In addition, the Museum collection contains nine heritage structures, thousands of photographs and artifacts which represent our collective heritage.

Island farms, fishing operations, and retail commerce developed at a faster pace once San Juan County was established in 1873. Families were often cross-cultural, established by the marriages of Coast Salish women to European-American descent men. In the 1890s, leisure boat excursions to bucolic, fresh air places became popular and Friday Harbor experienced a flourishing era of town development with new hotels, shops, and restaurants. Fishing and logging were becoming thriving industries, so commercial export out of Friday Harbor made for an active seaport. In the early 1950s, with soldiers home from World War II and families reunited, national advertising campaigns promoted “See America,” and encouraged domestic leisure travel, including the San Juans as a family vacation destination. The popularity of recreational boating and the building of summer vacation cabins followed in the 1960s.
