I’m a unique product of the American West. I grew up mountain biking then coding, backpacking then sketching, snowboarding then doing calculus. These variety of interests led me to design and explore in the beautiful state of Arizona. I’m currently a first-year graduate student pursuing passions in computational design, sustainability, graphic design, international design and much more.

ASU Pride Week Culture at ASU’s annual Pride Week celebration was unique in its delivery as the first digital culture celebration at ASU. This was due to the closure of the campuses only weeks before due to COVID-19. As a result, this required a last-minute shift to online delivery methods such as animated trivia videos, Zoom SafeZone training, and much more. To facilitate this change, our marketing strategy also shifted to an online platform, prioritizing graphic materials that allowed students to display their stance as part of the LGBTQIQ+ community. The graphic identity of this campaign focused on two part. One: a campus-centered design that showed how the spectrum of celebration exists at ASU across its many campuses. Two: materials for the student-led Rainbow Coallition that display their identity in a way that is still fashionable, inspired by the cheeky tagline: “Succulents are gay. Thrive AS U are.”

Blossom + Elias The objective for the re-election campaign for Taylor Blossom and Sophia Elias was simple: appear synonymous with the fabric of Montana State University. To accomplish this, we employed official university colors, font, branding standards, and iconic campus imagery to portray a sense of belonging. Most importantly, however, the campaign embraced its roots as the figurehead for a student body driven by powder sports, mountain activities and self-aware humor at Bozeman’s stance as a hipster mountain west town. This was especially clear in our #mypresidentskisinjeans marketing materials, a tounge-in-cheek reference to a dismissive online comment aimed at the candidates. The marketing materials were paired with a video endorsement from the schools Outdoor Recreation leaders and was the final push in an ultimately successful campaign at the end of May. Hills for Hope Hills for Hope was the first annual 5k walk and fun run held in memory of Becky Campbell, who passed away from Cervical Cancer earlier in 2020. The race was both an awareness campaign for cervical cancer as well as a fundraiser to donate money to local organizations promoting research and screenings. The graphics for the campaign were heavily inspired by predetermined colors, particularly the shade of yellow that had always been Ms. Campbell’s favorite. However, the H in the logo sought to incoporate the shade of blue that marks the cervical cancer ribbon. The logo was heavily inspired by paying tribute to Becky, as well as the Northern Idaho landscape that she dearly loved during her time on this earth.

Trans Awareness Trans Awareness Week at ASU is an annual Culture at ASU campaign to bring awareness to the Trans and non-binary communities that exist at ASU. This week culminates in the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th, where trans advocates raise awareness for the transgender community through education and advocacy activities. For the week’s rebranding, advocates at ASU wanted to connect the campaign to the local community. In doing so, they wanted to reinforce that this was an issue that strikes us here at home through the lives of our friends and colleagues. To accomplish this, the design utilizes iconic imagery of A mountain and the desert landscape that graces our state. These are laid out to call back to the iconic Trans flag colors in the form of a desert vista.

Womens’ Herstory Women’s Herstory Month at ASU has always been an incredibly successful month for the ASU community. However, the Women’s coalition recognized that it was failing in its ability to be as inclusive as possible for all of its members. In the past, imagery had simply included a pink banner and a white fist. However, we wanted to expand beyond that. In order to do so, we embraced imagery from cultures across the communities that we have present at ASU and how they might coexist in a single person. This included the inclusion of symbols from a veteran, a mom, a native woman, a trans woman, a member of the LGTBTQIQ+ community, and more. These various images of women raising their fists in a promotion of female power were used across various mediums from video to stickers to t-shirts to fanny packs.

Proud

It didn't take me long to recognize and become comfortable with my own unique identity, but it did take a long time for me to become comfortable sharing it with the rest of the world. Today I am proud of my queer identity just as I'm proud of my identities as a sister, mother, friend, caretaker, partner, student, service leader, ally, advocate, and activist. All of these pieces are a part of me and I'm happy with the way the puzzle looks when they all come together.

My identity as a queer person is one of the most important parts ME. I am proud of myself and I love the community that I am apart of because it has allowed me to meet and connect with so many incredible people. We are activists, educators, and change makers who never stop fighting for the things we believe in. I live every day proudly OUT and am in a happy queer relationship with the love of my life.

The culminating event of OUT at ASU, Shout Out is a campaign that provides members of the ASU LGBTQIQ+ community a platform to talk about their life experiences to their peers. As part of the marketing strategy for this campaign, we wanted to provide a cohesive series of images that would allow these students to “stand out” through short bios to identify themselves before their speeches. The largest part of the campaign rebranding was the new “Shout Out” logo. The logo utilizes standard ASU marketing guidelines, while adding a twist through the utilization of multicolored stripes that represent the spectrum of different identities within the LGBTQIQ+ community as well as the array of flags that typically identify each of these different gender identities.

Identity

For me, to be transgender and queer requires compassion and perseverance. Compassion for those who don’t understand my identity and for those who don’t see me as I see myself. Perseverance for when I grow impatient with waiting to become me and for when circumstances aren’t perfect. But, most importantly, it requires the audacity to be openly and unapologetically myself.

What my identity is and means to me has really changed a lot since I first came out. When I first came out it was about proving to everyone that I was valid no matter who I was attracted to, and now that I’ve grown up and matured, it’s more about loving myself unconditionally and being comfortable with who I am.

AIAS West Quad Montana State University was chosen in the Spring of 2019 to hold the American Institute of Architecture Students annual “West Quad” conference, hosting students from all throughout the American West. The marketing materials for this event sought huge inspiration from the landscape of Bozeman, Montana and its influence on local architecture. This culminated in the conference theme of “Texture,” that being the texture that makes up the local landscape, design communities, and the materials we seek inspiration from as designers. This marketing campaign included website design, poster design and printing, social media marketing, and various giveaway materials such as stickers and sketchbooks.

ASU Graduation As ASU’s first online convocation in the wake of COVID-19, the marketing strategy for graduates had to take on an incredibly unique task of properly celebrating those who had their graduation taken away from them. In particular, Culture at ASU wanted to recognize the graduates of various cultures at ASU that normally attend one of various “special convocations that allow a graduate to celebrate with members of their community in a special event. To allow for a small piece of recognition for these graduates, Culture at ASU provided a number of various Facebook and Instagram filters for students featuring the various iconic stoles and regalia appropriate to their convocation. While no substitute for the loss of an iconic life experience in the short term, it was a small step to allow students to still feel celebrated and recognized.

MSU Study Abroad Over the course of 2018-2019, my time with MSU Study Abroad and International Scholar Services largely consisted of a re-branding campaign across all print and online materials. This included reformatting entire websites, creating new welcome materials for incoming and outgoing students, and working with partner schools to update materials. In this new look, we wanted to focus on what makes Bozeman attractive. The mountains, the vistas and the unique opportunities afforded in Montana. Likewise, I sought to provide various graphics and branding standards that might be reused and adapted upon by graduation from MSU. These were included in an overall graphics standard guide for the office as well as a series of tutorials for how to update websites and materials with new information.

Culture Newsletter The Culture at ASU weekly newsletter was a concept that only began at the offset of the 2019-2020 academic year. With absolutely no precursor to draw inspiration from, the guidelines were very much left open for what the graphics might look like. What resulted was the idea of simplicity. The PR team sought for the look of the header and related materials to echo the look of our other materials: from the standard Culture@ASU logo to the geometric background of the header. However, the crucial innovation was the ability for our header to be generic depending on the celebration of our various heritage months. We began filling opening envelope with various icons as well as info on the corresponding heritage month. These promoted the concept of opening up a celebration and the events and celebration that comes along with it.
