First Two Women Elected in Lethbridge, 1924
One hundred years ago, in December 1924, Susie Bawden and Mary McClenaghan became the first two women elected to public office in Lethbridge when they were elected to the Lethbridge Public School Board.
In November 1924, it was announced that the Local Council of Women had decided to enter two candidates into the race and that Bawden and McClenaghan were unanimously chosen.
At that time, to be able to run for office, a person had to be “British subjects, able to read and write, and ratepayers in the district.” (29 November 1924, Lethbridge Herald)
Susie Bawden and Mary McCleaghan were sworn into office in early 1925.
The election was held on 9 December 1924 and the Local Council worked hard to help their candidates win seats. “Undoubtedly the feature of the election is the business -like organization of the women. Representatives of the Local Council of Women who were stationed at all the polling stations when the voting started at 9 o’clock this morning.”

NIKKA YUKO JAPANESE GARDEN
The Allied Arts Council is once again participating in Lethbridge Family Services’ Angel Tree Campaign.
Visit the Christmas trees at Casa or AAC Works on 7 Street to select a paper angel that represents a child in need. On each angel you will find a gender, an age range, plus a list of gift suggestions to get you started! Purchase an appropriate gift for your angel. Return your new, unwrapped gift to AAC Works by Wednesday, December 23. These gifts will be picked up by local elves, wrapped, and delivered to a child before Christmas Day.
This initiative is led by Lethbridge Family Services, in coordination with Christmas Hope a partnership of local agencies including the Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank, Volunteer Lethbridge, the Salvation Army, and My City Care Shop of Wonders to serve the community over the holidays. Nikka Yuko
with Alberta’s natural landscape. Designed by Tadashi Kubo, who studied the local environment, and constructed under Masami Sugimoto’s guidance, the Garden embodies harmony between cultures. Alberta’s scenery is expressed through Japanese design elements—a waterfall, stream, and pond symbolize life’s flow, while layered greens, pruned trees, and seasonal blooms reflect the Garden’s tranquil, symbolic beauty and the impermanence of nature.
At Nikka Yuko, each detail harmonizes Japanese tradition with Alberta’s landscape. Ancient rocks from nearby mountain passes were carefully placed to reflect local mountains and rivers, while smaller stones form a reflective dry garden beside the teahouse. Handcrafted wooden structures from Kyoto, including the teahouse and bell tower, were reassembled on-site, and the deep tones of the bronze Friendship Bell echo a call to unity. Stone lanterns and a five-tiered pagoda line the pathways, offering symbols of guidance and inspiration throughout the Garden.
Now add over 170,000 lights and add a Masturi (Festival) feel to the Garden with their Winter Light Festival. Step through the entrance gate, leave the bustle of everyday city life behind and refresh your senses. A host or hostess will greet you and highlight the Garden’s many features.
Their most popular event of the year, the famous annual Winter Light Festival runs from December until the end of February where there were over 30,000 guests in attendance. This year they’re continuing their theme of a Celebration of the Seasons! They will transform the Garden to present all four seasons. Haru (Spring), Natsu (Summer), Aki (Fall), and Fuyu (Winter).
For each season they offer unique visual attractions and engaging elements.
The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden offers you an unforgettable cultural experience, combining the beauty of nature in a serene setting. Consider booking an unforgettable event with them in the future. In the meantime celebrate the Winter Light Festival at Nikka Yuko !
Visit nikkayuko.com to see their event calendar for ongoing and different cultural events, performances and demonstrations.

Facts about a Majestic Deer
Caribou (Rangifer tarandus ) is what the species is called in North America and reindeer is their name in Eurasia.
In summer they migrate north in one of the largest animal migrations on Earth. Herein, they travel more than 965 kilometers.
The Caribou is the only member of the deer family, where both male and female grow antlers.
Interestingly, they have a Nasoturbinal bone in their noses.
Helen Schuler Nature Centre
Winter Hours:
Open Daily 1:00pm – 4:00pm (Closed Mondays)
This curled bone supports thin tissue filled with blood vessels. It warms the air they breathe in before it enters the lungs.
Under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), there are three subspecies of caribou that live in Canada: Peary Caribou, Barren-ground Caribou, and Woodland Caribou.
Caribou ankles make a distinctive, loud click, when tendons snap over the sesamoid bones of the ankle.
During the summer, their eyes are golden; in the winter, they turn a striking blue.

Mindful Eating
Mindful Eating Practices for the
Holidays
The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and often indulgent meals. Practicing mindful eating can help us to savor every bite, stay attuned to our body’s signals, and enjoy the festivities without negativity attached to it. Mindful eating encourages us to slow down, engage in our senses, and make intentional choices about what and how much we consume.
Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues, selecting foods that genuinely satisfy, and setting small yet thoughtful goals – we can enjoy holiday gatherings while keeping our wellness in balance.
Here are a few simple tips to make mindful eating a part of your holiday experience.
1. Listen to Your Body
· Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues.
2. Focus on Connection/Practice Gratitude
· Practice gratitude for your food, the effort behind it and the company.
3. Challenge Negative Self-Talk
· Recognize negative thoughts about food/body, replacing with self-compassion.
4. Celebrate Variety
· Embrace a colorful plate filled with different foods.
5. Enjoy!
· Most importantly, enjoy your holidays, food, good company, and be easy on yourself!

Unique Features of Ringette
Ring and Stick Gameplay: Unlike hockey, ringette players use a straight stick and a hollow rubber ring, requiring skillful handling and precision passing.
The Blue Line Rule: To encourage teamwork and strategy, players must pass the ring over each blue line to a teammate.
Shot Clock: Teams have 30 seconds to take a shot on net, keeping the game fast-paced and eliminating stalling tactics.
No Body Checking: Ringette emphasizes finesse over physicality, making it a noncontact sport with strict penalties for physical play.
Goal Crease Rule: Only the goalie can enter the crease, and players must avoid touching the ring inside it
A Game of Strategy and Speed
Ringette is known for its high-scoring matches and constant action Players must think on their feet and communicate effectively, as only three skaters from each team are allowed in the offensive zone at a time This creates a game of strategic positional play where movement and teamwork are essential.
International Appeal
Though it began in Canada, ringette has a global following, with strong communities in Finland, Sweden, and beyond Its focus on skill, speed, and strategy makes it a thrilling sport to watch and play
