NEW PROGRAM ALERT - JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CLUB

ACTION PACKED FUN

The Junior Lifeguard Club offers action-packed fun for kids who love the water and want more than just swimming lessons. It’s perfect for quick learners and those who thrive in an energetic learning environment.

FRIENDS CAN JOIN TOGETHER

The Junior Lifeguard Club is designed for members of all abilities. Friends (and siblings) can join the club together even if they are of different ages and abilities. The Club welcomes members between 8 and 15 years of age. The RecEx Rangers group is for ages 8-11, and the RecEx Rays group is for 12-15-year-olds.

When can I start? Registration is now open! The club will run from January 17 until March 22, 2025 every Friday from 3:30 pm until 4:30 pm.

FACILITY RENTALS & COURSES

Can I rent the facility for an event?

You certainly can! We offer great prices on private facility rentals outside of our normal business hours.

Do you offer any other courses aside from swimming lessons?

We sure do! Stan Siwik and Fritz Sick Pool offer Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program consists of Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol. Structured the same as a swimming lesson, these courses are an excellent introductory to lifeguard knowledge and skills. Stan Siwik also offers in-house courses whether you’re looking to register or recertify, we’ve got you covered. Registration for advanced courses is now open!

Our mission is to make sure our community is up to date on Alberta’s Health and Safety Standards. The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code has undergone changes in its Part 11 (standard first aid) section, effective from March 31, 2023. Standard First Aid is Intermediate First Aid, the new names are in line with the CSA Standard Z1210-17 23. The changes were made to ensure that the names of the courses are consistent with the national standard.

Hosting the 1975 Canada Winter Game

From February 11 to 23, 1975, it was all about the Games.

Twelve communities and over 4000 volunteers were required to put on the gargantuan event. Over 600 athletes participated in seventeen different sports.

Excitement, and work, for the Games started far in advance of the actual games.

A rally was held in 1975 announced the games were just a year away. Building projects and facility redevelopments took place across southern Alberta. Here in Lethbridge, the Jeux Canada Game Sportsplex was opened in the fall of 1974 in anticipation of the games.

Pharley the Pheasant, games mascot, was unveiled.

Then the Games themselves. Despite a few trials and tribulations, the games

were an incredible experience for Southern Alberta.

EMPRESS THEATRE

Since opening its doors in 1912, the Empress Theatre has stood as a beacon of culture and community for Southern Alberta. Nestled on the historic Main Street of Fort Macleod, this architectural gem has been a constant source of entertainment, education, and connection for over a century.

Built during a period of prosperity in the town’s history, the theatre was initially a franchise of the “Famous Players” chain and one of four theatres in Fort Macleod. Designed with both function and flair, its modest exterior belied the luxurious interior features like plush chairs and Tiffany-style lamps, which made it a "first-class theatre" for its time. Over the years, the Empress has evolved from a vaudeville house to a hub for concerts, lectures, political rallies, community musicals, and film screenings.

The theatre’s tiny basement dressing rooms hold a quirky piece of its history—graffiti left by performers as far back as the 1920s, including acts like Texas Tony and his Wonder Horse. This tradition continues with modern performers leaving their mark, adding to the venue's living story.

Today, the Empress Theatre is one of Alberta’s last remaining examples of small-town theatre architecture, earning it designation as an Alberta Historic Resource.

Operated by the not-for-profit Empress Theatre Society on behalf of the Town of Fort Macleod, the venue continues to host an incredible variety of events, from live music and film festivals to weddings, paranormal investigations, and summer theatre camps.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, arts lover, or just looking for a unique experience, the Empress Theatre promises something for everyone. Its enduring presence is a testament to the power of community support and cultural enrichment.

Habits for Health

Set Yourself Up for Heal thy Habit Success!

'Tis the season to make goals and plans, but for many, the biggest hurdle isn't deciding what you want to achieve but how to stay motivated and on track to get there.

What's YOUR 'why'?

The first step to setting achvieveable and relevant goals is to think about what's really important to YOU. Why are you setting the goals you are? Why are they important to you? This process of questioning your "why", is meant to connect you to your values. Goals need to align with your values in order to really stick.

Prioritize, Organize and Remove Barriers

Make your goal a priority by intentionally scheduling it into your calendar. Create an environment that facilitates your goal: lay out workout clothes or pack a healthy lunch the night before, choose activities you enjoy and plan them with a f riend for accountability.

A Few more tips...

Let family and f riends know what you are working on so they can support you, and don't forget the power of rewards! Keep your self-talk positive and recognize that obstacles will come up but rather than abandoning your plan, adjust instead. Remember that even doing a little is always a step in the right direction! Small steps lead to big successes. You got this!

Debunking Sport Accessibility Myths in Lethbridge

The Lethbridge Sport Council is dedicated to making sport accessible for everyone. Through events like Give-It-A-Try and Roving Gyms, we encourage families to explore sports in a fun, no-commitment way. However, feedback from participants reveals barriers to fully committing to organized sports. Here, we address three common myths and highlight local resources to overcome them

Myth 1: Sport Is Too Expensive

Cost is often cited as a major hurdle, but the subsidy programs in Lethbridge make sports more affordable. For example: Financial Support programs like KidSport, Jumpstart, and the City of Lethbridge’s Fee Assistance Program can cover up to $700 in registration fees for qualifying families. This can completely cover the costs of most entry level programs.

Affordable Equipment: The Calgary Flames Sports Bank provides lightly used gear for all ages, reducing equipment expenses.

Transportation Aid: The City of Lethbridge offers discounted bus passes, helping families manage rising travel costs. These resources significantly lower the financial burden, ensuring that cost doesn’t prevent participation.

Myth 2: There Aren’t Family-Friendly Sports

In reality, several activities in Lethbridge encourage all-age involvement: Disc Golf: With multiple courses in the city, it’s an easy, accessible option for families to enjoy together.

Rock Climbing: Indoor facilities accommodate climbers of all ages and abilities, promoting teamwork through belaying and problemsolving.

Shooting Sports: Inclusive for all ages and abilities, shooting fosters a shared family experience, often involving multiple generations training side by side.

Events like the Southern Alberta Summer Games also allow families to compete as teams, strengthening bonds through sport.

Myth 3: Sports Aren’t Inclusive of Disabilities

For participants with disabilities, Lethbridge offers many tailored programs, and many organizations offer inclusive programs: Special Olympics: Offers year-round sports and leadership opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Para Sport: Includes options like adaptive lacrosse, challenger baseball, wheelchair basketball and hiking through the Adaptable Outdoor Recreation Society.

Blind/Adapted Sports: Programs like blind bowling and dragon boating cater to athletes with visual impairments, fostering confidence and community.

Many local organizations have made strides to offer programming is accessible to all, including wrestling, skating, and archery

Overcoming Barriers Together

Misconceptions often stem from a lack of awareness about available resources. Connect with the Lethbridge Sport Council to access our sports directory, explore funding opportunities, and find inclusive programs. Let’s break down barriers and help everyone find the joy of sport!
