Henderson Park Becomes a Bird Sanctuary

In March 1925 – 100 years ago –Henderson Park was made a bird sanctuary by an order-in-council at Ottawa.

It was one of several bird sanctuaries set up under the Migratory Birds Convention Act.

Under the bird sanctuary rules, it was illegal to kill, hunt, capture, injure, take or molest migratory game, migratory insectivorous, or migratory non -game birds, or take, injure, destroy or molest their nests or eggs.

Those who broke the rules could face a fine up to $100 or six months’ imprisonment.

To support the sanctuary, in 1926 a contest was held to build bird houses for Henderson Park.

Henderson Park remained a bird sanctuary into the 1950s.

arts in LETHBRIDGE

Since 1976, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin has been an important centre for contemporary art in Canada, sharing timely, inspiring programming with communities across the region.

Located in Galt Gardens in Lethbridge’s first purpose-built Public Library, the Gallery presents contemporary art exhibitions by leading regional, national, and international artists. The art experiences at the Gallery are ever-changing with exhibitions rotating quarterly throughout the building. However, one thing that has remained consistent across the decades is the Gallery’s commitment to curating acclaimed artists from around the world in dialogue with exceptional artists from across the region, ensuring the arts in southern Alberta are championed locally and beyond.

The Gallery also offers a range of public programs for all ages and interests, helping communities connect through the arts and learn about the artists and exhibitions through tours, workshops, day camps, and other creative activities. The Gallery’s Shop at SAAG offers a unique shopping experience where you can find one of a kind goods from Canadian designers and artisans, including jewelry, textiles, ceramics, prints, and more.

With a facility-wide renovation to modernize and enhance the building coming up and a 50th anniversary milestone in 2026, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin is excited to reaffirm its commitment to making southern Alberta a place where contemporary art supports—and creates—vibrant communities.

PEOPLE IN SPORT

From Player to Mentor - Kailey Piercey

Kailey Piercey’s journey in ringette began at age four, chasing rings on the ice with soon-to-be lifelong friends. Now, 18 years later, she’s on the other side of the bench, shaping the next generation of athletes through coaching

Kailey’s decision to stay in sport, despite the high dropout rate among adolescent girls, has had a profound impact on her life “If I didn't stick with ringette, I wouldn't be where I am today,” she said “My experiences with ringette and volunteering have inspired me and provided me with the skills and motivation necessary to pursue a career in teaching ”

Inspired by strong female role models, including her mother and a young junior coach, Kailey stepped into coaching at just 14. As a junior coach, she not only learned to develop athletes but also became a mentor, ensuring her players had a safe and supportive environment “One of my main focuses when coaching is that I want to build those relationships,” she said

Even when she moved from Calgary to Lethbridge for university, ringette found its way back into her life After writing an essay about her experiences in the sport, a professor connected her with a local team She quickly went from an on-ice helper to assistant coach, and then to head coach of a U14 team that has already seen tournament success.

Beyond the rink, Kailey’s coaching experiences have reinforced her desire to become a teacher. Now pursuing an Education degree, she’s working with St Francis Junior High’s elite ringette program, taking her first steps into the classroom “Ringette opened so many doors for me,” she said doors she is now helping to open for the next generation of girls in sport

BLOG

"INFLUENCING" A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH TECHNOLOGY

Megan reflects on the impact of screen time and notifications on daily life, particularly after becoming a parent. Reviewing her smartphone data, she was startled to see she receives “an average of 83 notifications a day.” Constant alerts create a state of distraction and make it difficult to disconnect. Being more aware of this makes her want to be more intentional to set a good example for her child.

To establish healthier screen habits, Burland and her family have introduced several strategies. They have identified ‘phone free zones’ such as mealtimes, family gatherings, bedtime, and family walks. She has turned off unnecessary notifications, set time limits on certain apps, and makes an effort to be present during quality time. Additionally, she frequently reflects on her screen time and considers taking breaks from certain apps or social media when needed.

Burland acknowledges that being mindful of her own habits is important for setting a good example for her child. She encourages others to reflect on their own screen use and explore strategies for a healthier relationship with technology.
