Sugar Beet Industry Restarts, 1925

One hundred years ago, the sugar beet industry re-started in southern Alberta.

The industry had first started around 1903, but the original Raymond factory closed during the First World War. A great deal of work was done to try and bring the industry back.

The Irrigation Council promoted intensive farming and held a conference to promote the idea. In 1924, the 6000-acre campaign was launched to show that enough sugar beets could be raised to ensure the success of the industry.

In the spring of 1925, trainloads of machinery arrived in Raymond and in May 1925 a celebration was held for the new factory, with over 2000 people in attendance.

Finally, in February 1925 the UtahIdaho Sugar company announced its decision to build a new factory in Raymond.

PEOPLE IN SPORT

Invictus Games Volunteer, Lori Harasem

Lori's journey in volunteerism began in her hometown of Kelowna, inspired by her mother's active involvement in community service. From assisting in her school's library to participating in environmental initiatives like painting fish on drains, Lori's commitment to volunteering was evident from a young age. Her passion for sports volunteering ignited during high school when she assisted at the Apple Triathlon, captivated by the dedication of triathletes.

After moving to Lethbridge for university and starting a family, Lori continued her volunteer work, especially in her children's sports activities. Her role at the City of Lethbridge further immersed her in the local event scene, leading her to volunteer at various events, including the Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival and the Calgary Folk Fest. This extensive involvement not only enriched her life with diverse experiences but also deepened her appreciation for community engagement.

Lori's volunteerism transcended local boundaries when she won a contest to accompany Olympians Clara Hughes and Rosie McLennan to Africa with the organization Right to Play. This experience highlighted the global impact of sports and reinforced her dedication to volunteerism. Subsequently, she volunteered at the 2024 Special Olympics Winter National Games in Calgary, working with a diverse team from across Canada

Her aspiration to contribute to larger events led her to the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver, an international sporting event for wounded service personnel founded by Prince Harry in 2014. As a Sport Supervisor, Lori ensured seamless behind-the-scenes operations, supporting athletes in their healing journeys. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, "The stories the competitors share about how sport has helped pull them out of such dark times are incredible." The experience deeply moved Lori and underscored the profound impact of sports on mental health and community building.

Lori's story exemplifies how volunteerism in sports can lead to personal growth and contribute significantly to individual and community well-being. Her experiences, from local events to international arenas, highlight the transformative power of giving back and the universal language of sports in fostering resilience and unity.

2025 Marks 50 years since Lethbridge hosted the JEUX CANADA GAMES

CORI-JO (HEGGIE) & BILL PETRUNIK

won GOLD at the Games

On the final day of competition at the 1975 Canada Winter Games, Lethbridge’s Cori Jo Petrunik and Bill Petrunik won the gold medal in pairs figure skating. Their victory was one of the standout moments of the Games, coming just before the Lethbridge Native Sons’ championship win in hockey and the closing ceremonies.

Competing in front of more than 7,500 spectators, Cori Jo and Bill weren’t the favourites to win, but they took to the ice with confidence and delivered a strong, 'clean' performance. For Cori Jo, the experience was transformative. At 12 years old, and being newer to pairs skating, she recalls the event as a turning point that fueled her passion for competition. Bill, already an accomplished singles skater, provided steady support, helping his sister stay calm under the bright lights of the packed arena.

Beyond the competition, the Games provided unforgettable moments. Cori Jo had the honour of lighting the torch during the opening ceremony, an experience made even more nerve-wracking when Cori-Jo was hoping she wouldn't trip on the wooden floorboards covering the ice. She fondly remembers the excitement of receiving her yellow team jacket and the camaraderie of staying in the athletes' village. Their gold-medal performance was made even more special by the electric atmosphere in the arena, where they felt the entire crowd was rooting for them.

The Canada Winter Games had a lasting impact on both Cori Jo and Bill. Their time in competitive figure skating led to opportunities to travel across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, where they made lifelong friendships. Their experiences in sport also helped shape their careers. Cori Jo went on to coach figure skating before becoming a teacher at Victoria Park High School, where she incorporates skating as a unit in her “Active Lifestyles” class. Bill pursued a business career in Manhattan, leading a large team of employees. Cori Jo and Bill also credit their parents for their incredible dedication, making incredible sacrifices to support their journey, both financially and emotionally, alongside their siblings who cheered them on at every competition."

Today, Cori Jo still lives in Raymond with her husband Ryan. Her three daughters all learned to skate at a young age, though they found their passion in basketball. Bill lives in Brooklyn with his wife Joanne, and they are retired and planning to move to New Jersey to be closer to their sons and their families.

The Petruniks’ legacy in Lethbridge sport was affirmed when they were inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. Their story remains an inspiring chapter in the history of the Canada Winter Games and a proud moment for the Lethbridge community.

The 1975 Canada Winter Games were hosted in Lethbridge from February 11-23, 1975. Despite being hosted by Lethbridge, the games were held in 12 communities in southern Alberta. More than 4,000 local volunteers helped with the event. The Canada Games caused improvements to sporting events throughout the region, including the construction of the $4 million Canada Games Sportplex.

SPORT FOR ADULTS IN LETHBRIDGE

No experience? No problem! Get active & meet new people

A summary of a story at https://lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/news/more-than-a-game-how-adult-sport-builds-social-connections-and-community

Sport isn’t just for kids—adults of all ages can benefit from staying active, not only for their physical health but also for the social connections it fosters. Research by Robert Putnam and Peter Attia highlights how community engagement contributes to longevity, and sport provides a natural setting for adults to build relationships

Dave Sehn has experienced this firsthand. Whether organizing a weekly hockey game in the winter or a roller hockey league in the summer, he has found that sport helps bridge social gaps, bringing together people from different backgrounds. “Staying active and connecting community are two components that sport brings together,” says Sehn. “So you’re adding up to this culmination of—you can live longer, and you can live healthier as well, by creating strong connections and staying active.”

Unlike youth sports, which often focus on competition and skill development, adult sport opportunities tend to emphasize social interaction, fitness, and fun. Many programs are designed for beginners or those returning to a sport after years away, making it easy to get involved. The benefits of adult sport include:

Building friendships – Sport provides a natural way to meet people + create lasting connections. Enhancing mental health – Physical activity is proven to reduce stress and improve mood. Strengthening communities – Playing in a league or club gives people a sense of belonging. Encouraging lifelong activity – Whether picking up a childhood sport or trying something new, staying active is key to long-term health.

The Lethbridge Sport Council is working to highlight adult-specific opportunities, recognizing that sport is more than just a game—it’s a way to stay connected, healthy, and engaged with the community. Whether you’re looking for a competitive challenge or a casual way to meet people, there’s something for everyone. Now is the perfect time to take that first step and find the right fit for you!
