ABOUT THE POOLS
What is happening at our pools this season? The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities for all ages.
What are the new programs?
• Power Jog – A vigorous, high-energy, and fun way to exercise! Using various flotation devices, an effective way to get a total body workout without the jarring impact of dry land classes.
• Swim & Splash - Family play time in the tots’ pool for toddlers and preschoolers!
What do you offer for fit and jog classes? What can I do during leisure swim?
Nicholas Sheran offers a total of 9 weekly aqua fit classes, ensuring you stay active and fit, while Stan Siwik provides 13 weekly aqua jog classes, for those looking to exercise in the deeper end of the pool. Fritz Sick offers a wide array of classes from aqua jog and aqua fit to aqua Zumba and senior aqua fit.
What is leisure swim, you ask? It’s a time for you to swim at your own comfortable and leisurely pace. It’s also an excellent way to get a gentle form of exercise. Float, tread water, or swim as slow or fast as you like – it’s all about relaxation and enjoyment.
Can I rent the facility for an event?
You certainly can! We offer great prices on private facility rentals outside of our normal business hours.
Do you offer any other courses aside from swimming lessons?
We sure do! Stan Siwik and Fritz Sick Pool offer Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program consists of Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol. Structured the same as a swimming lesson, these courses are an excellent introductory to lifeguard knowledge and skills. Stan Siwik also offers in-house courses whether you’re looking to register or recertify, we’ve got you covered. Registration for advanced courses is now open!
Our mission is to make sure our community is up to date on Alberta’s Health and Safety Standards. The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code has undergone changes in its Part 11 (standard first aid) section, effective from March 31, 2023. Standard First Aid is Intermediate First Aid, the new names are in line with the CSA Standard Z1210-17 23. The changes were made to ensure that the names of the courses are consistent with the national standard.

Stan Siwik passed away in 1985.

THE TEXTILE SURFACE DESIGN GUILD
The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge is proud to announce that Kathy Matkin-Clapton, a dedicated music educator, choral conductor, and sessional instructor at the University of Lethbridge, has been awarded the 2024 Joan Waterfield Memorial Award. With a career spanning over three decades, Kathy has profoundly impacted the Lethbridge arts community through her leadership of the University of Lethbridge Conservatory Choirs and her commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in music education. Her work has inspired countless students and educators, making her a cherished figure in Southern Alberta's musical landscape.
The Textile Surface Design Guild (TSDG) is a vibrant community of Lethbridge and area artists specializing in textile and paper surface design. Established in 1981, TSDG boasts a membership of around 30 members and operates from Casa, where it fosters creativity and collaboration.
The Guild is dedicated to ongoing creative education and also offers socializing opportunities for its members. It achieves these objectives through regular meetings, social events, and shared studio time. Additionally, TSDG promotes its members' work through various exhibitions and sales throughout Southern Alberta. Recent showcases include "Strands of Nature" at Helen Schuler Nature Centre, a hand-dyed indigo display at the Lethbridge Public Library, and "Tall Tales" at Casa.
Again this year, TSDG is excited to be part of Christmas at Casa on November 15 and 16, 2024. This year, in addition to the beautiful handcrafted items shoppers have come to expect, they will be showcasing a broad range of unique and one of a kind items made with hand-dyed indigo and rusted fabric and paper. They will be in the Textile Studio with a diverse selection of clothing, fashion accessories, housewares, books, ornaments, and festive surprises ideal for holiday gifting. So Visit them on the second floor of Casa to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list and experience the best of handcrafted artistry this season!

The Burrowing Owl
Did You Know?
The Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia) gained its name from a particular behaviour: it nests underground. But contrary to the impression given by the bird’s scientific name, which means “little digger,” this owl rarely digs its own burrow. Instead, it constructs its nest in burrows vacated by small mammals like ground squirrels, badgers, and prairie dogs. Burrowing Owls are comical birds that appear to look like a short, fat owl on stilts.
With fewer than 1,000 pairs thought to exist in this country, the Burrowing Owl is one of the most endangered birds in Canada’s prairie grasslands. Burrowing Owls are most sensitive to disturbance that causes abandonment immediately prior to, or during, the early stages of egg-laying (late April – midMay). The major factor contributing to the decline of Burrowing Owls is habitat loss. An equally grave danger to the owls is pesticides.

PEOPLE IN SPORT
Caroline Reimer
Caroline Reimer’s coaching journey began in 2012 when she and Heather Herman co-founded the junior program for the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild, driven by her daughter’s love for the sport. With prior coaching experience in soccer, Caroline transitioned naturally to coaching roller derby. Her passion for mentoring young athletes flourished, and her coaching philosophy—centered on controlling what you can and always giving 100% effort—has guided her through more than a decade of volunteer coaching.
Caroline’s coaching career has taken her from local roller derby teams to the international stage as the head coach for Team Canada Juniors at the 2023 Junior World Cup in France, where her teams played some of the best roller derby she’s ever witnessed. Despite her success, Caroline remains humble, always keeping the focus on her athletes.
Coaching has deeply impacted Caroline’s personal life as well, inspiring her to pursue a degree in education and helping her find a sense of belonging. Her proudest moments come from watching young athletes discover their potential and seeing the positive effect roller derby has on those who might not thrive in traditional sports. Through her passion and dedication, Caroline continues to shape the future of roller derby and the lives of the athletes she coaches.
I get to witness the profound impact roller derby has on those who don’t consider themselves "sports people." As a physical education teacher, I’ve seen students who aren’t typically drawn to mainstream sports find a place in roller derby, where they can be themselves. It’s rewarding to see them light up and hear parents express gratitude for introducing their kids to a sport that embraces individuality.

TIPS FROM AN OLYMPIAN
You’ll never regret trying something new
This article excerpt was published in the Lethbridge Sport Council online magazine --> lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/sportmatters
When Kelsey Mitchell was 23, it had been 11 years since she’d owned a bike. Yep, she was 12 when she’d last owned one.
So, naturally, at the age of 24, Mitchell won the women’s cycling sprint title at the 2018 Canadian championships, won gold in the 2019 Pan American Games, brought home gold from the 2019 Pan American Track Cycling Championships, where she broke the world record in the 200-metre track sprint, and became the Olympic champion in the sprint at the Summer Games in Tokyo 2020.
Wait, what? How does a person go from being a non-cyclist to a world champion in the blink of an eye?
Kelsey
Mitchell’s tips for parents & kids
The more variety of sports and physical activities, the better. Let kids be kids. I think being an active, healthy adult comes from being a healthy and active kid. Start ‘em young and keep ‘em active!
Stay active. Whether it be the Olympics or their high school soccer team, the desire and push to have people stay active for as long as possible should be the goal. From team sport to individual sports, so many good life lessons can be learned. You’ll never regret trying something. Everything happens for a reason and life has a funny way of working out. In your sport, in your career, in your life, in everything, you’ll never regret going after your dream.
