Barbara Ann Scott Visited Lethbridge, 1949
In November 1949, 75 years ago, Barbara Ann Scott, visited Lethbridge where she sold out two shows . Fans came from afar afield as Montana, Bow Island and the Crowsnest Pass and hundreds of young people lined up to get her autograph.
“Every available seat in the Lethbridge arena was jammed Tuesday evening as Canada’s skating sweetheart, Miss Barbara Ann Scott, thrilled a sell -out crowd.” (16 November 1949, Lethbridge Herald)
Scott was the 1948 Olympic champion, a two-time World Champion (winning in 1947 and 1948) and a four-time Canadian national champion (1944-46 and 1948). She is the only Canadian to win the Olympic ladies’ singles gold medal.

AMAPA Greeting Cards
For over 40 years, the Allied Arts Council (AAC) has coordinated art accessibility programming, rst at the Bowman Arts Centre and now at Casa. Accessibility Modi ed Art Programs for Adults (AMAPA) include 2D Art (drawing and painting) and in 3D Art (clay handbuilding and wheel), with services in the studio enhanced in 2019 by the addition of a wheelchair accessible clay wheel for participants.
Initiated by artists in the program in 2021, a table at Christmas at Casa sold unique artworks and greeting cards. The greeting cards were so successful that two more additional runs of cards were printed before the holidays. The cards were available downtown at AAC Works.
Since the initial success, new sets of holiday cards have been produced by the AMAPA artists each year. Look for the AMAPA table at Christmas at Casa with clay sculptures by Able Clay, original artworks, and greeting card designs produced in the program.
All of the proceeds from the greeting cards supports the AMAPA programming at Casa.

LETHBRIDGE INDEPENDENT
FILM SOCIETY
The Lethbridge Independent Film Society (LIFS) is building something special in Southern Alberta’s film scene. Their recent 48-Hour Film Festival gave local filmmakers a challenge: create an original short film from start to finish in just two days. The results were remarkable, with numerous impressive films produced in record time. The festival was such a hit that LIFS plans to make it an annual event, encouraging more local talent to dive into filmmaking.
LIFS is committed to enriching the cultural landscape of Southern Alberta by engaging all artists involved in filmmaking, offering resources, and encouraging mentorship, collaboration, and exhibition. Supporting the art of filmmaking in the community is their priority. They provide resources, connect filmmakers, and offer a platform for collaboration. Whether someone is just starting out or has been making films for years, LIFS helps creators develop their skills and showcase their work. It's about building a strong film culture in Lethbridge and giving local stories a voice.
In the months ahead, LIFS will host screenings of the films from the 48-Hour Film Festival, offering audiences a chance to see what local filmmakers have been working on. These screenings are a great way for the public to support local talent and experience the creativity happening right in their backyard.
LIFS meets on the second Friday of every month at Theoretically Brewing (1263 2nd Ave S) at 6 p.m., and everyone’s welcome—whether you're a filmmaker or just curious about what’s going on in the local film scene. It’s a laid-back way to connect with like-minded people and maybe even get inspired to start telling your own stories.

Potatoes were the first vegetable grown in space. A potato has more potassium than a banana! The average pumpkin has approximately 500 seeds. Every part of the pumpkin is edible. You can eat the root, stem, leaves, fruit, and seeds.
Cranberries are one of the few fruits native only to North America.
Cranberries contain a large amount of water. In fact, 90% of each berry is water making them very heavy.
Brussel Sprouts look like mini cabbages because they’re members of the same cruciferous vegetable family. The plants grow best in cooler climates, and they’re harvested after a frost.

Stay Active This Fall Embrace the Chill and Keep Moving!
As cooler weather and shorter days set in, it can be easy to feel discouraged about staying active. But what if you learned to embrace the season instead? With temperatures dropping, it is tempting to cozy up indoors, but this November, try prioritizing movement – it's essential for your overall health and well-being.
Why stay active in the cold weather?
Regular physical activity offers numerous benefits including boosting your mood, strengthening your immune system, improving sleep quality, enhancing energy levels, and encouraging social connection. Staying active during fall and winter can help fend off colds and flu while enhancing your mental wellbeing, especially with less sunlight.
Dress for the weather:
Layer up in comfortable shoes and clothes to get outside for your daily commute or an outdoor walk. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece for warmth, topped with a waterproof outer layer. Don’t forget gloves, a hat, and thermal socks to keep extremities warm!
You'll be surprised how enjoyable it still is to be outside in cooler weather when you are well prepared. Dig out those warm layers and keep moving!

OVERCOMING BARRIERS:
How Canadian Organizations Are Addressing Challenges for New to Canada Participants
A summary of an article from Sport for Life.
As communities across Canada, including Lethbridge, welcome newcomers from diverse backgrounds, integrating new-toCanada participants into sports offers an opportunity to enrich communities and strengthen the nation’s sporting culture. However, barriers such as financial constraints, transportation challenges, and cultural differences hinder full engagement. This article highlights these obstacles and the innovative ways Canadian organizations are addressing them to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for newcomers.
Key Points in the article
Removing financial barriers is a great place to start. Programs like the City of Lethbridge Fee Assistance Program, KidSport and Jumpstart provide financial support to make sports accessible for low-income newcomers.
Cultural differences can be a barrier to sport. Programs and events can introduce newcomers to Canadian sports, making them feel more comfortable and confident in participating. In Lethbridge, this could include programs such as SportFest, Roving Gyms, and Give-it-a-try events.
Inclusive Policies help get organizations on the right path. Initiatives can focus on fostering a welcoming environment by addressing racism and communication barriers.
If you represent a local sport organization that would like to explore ways to become more inclusive and welcoming to all participants in our community, please reach out to us, we can help. You can reach us by email at info@lethbridgesportcouncil.ca
Sport for Life is a nationally recognized not for profit organization consisting of sport and physical literacy experts with the longterm vision necessary to be catalysts for lasting change within the sport and physical activity ecosystem and beyond.
