Western Painted Turtle
The Western Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta bellii) is Alberta's only native turtle and the biggest of three sub-species found within Canada.
They have a smooth, gently rounded carapace (upper shell) that is dark green to black in colour with red markings on the sides. The plastron (lower shell) is usually bright orange or red with a large, irregular-dark blotch in the centre.
The sex of the Western Painted Turtle is determined by the temperature during their development.
It is reported that they can live up to 50 years but it takes about 10 years for them to be ready to have hatchlings.
In general, Painted Turtles defend themselves by kicking, scratching, biting, or urinating. In comparison to land tortoises, Painted Turtles can right themselves if they are flipped upside.
Males have longer nails. These nails are usually used during the courtship process.
The main threats to Western Painted Turtles are habitat loss and alteration, and road mortality.

Abdu’s Volunteer Journey
At just 17, Abdu is preparing for a bright future with aspirations of attending medical school in Ireland. His journey, marked by challenges and growth, has been shaped by his commitment to volunteerism
Abdu believes stepping out of one ' s comfort zone is vital for personal development Volunteering, he says, has been instrumental in equipping him with invaluable skills and experiences. Currently an assistant soccer coach, Abdu's path began on the rink at age five but soon shifted to soccer, where he found peace and joy in the game Beyond honing his skills, soccer fostered lasting friendships and a sense of community.
Inspired by the selflessness of his coaches, Abdu decided to give back by volunteering At 16, he realized coaching required more than enthusiasm and began seeking opportunities to build his leadership abilities. A Google search led him to the Lethbridge Sport Council, where he volunteered at a summer sports camp, organizing games and adapting to kids’ diverse needs This experience enhanced his leadership, organizational, and communication skills, laying the groundwork for his coaching journey When summer ended, Abdu reached out to the Lethbridge Soccer Association, where he secured a role as an assistant coach for a U10 team Recently, he led a practice independently, a milestone that boosted his confidence and affirmed his capabilities
For Abdu, volunteering has been transformative. It’s developed his confidence, refined his skills, and enriched his life with meaningful experiences He also recognizes its practical benefits, noting its value in strengthening his medical school applications
As Abdu continues to balance his ambitions and contributions, he embodies the spirit of giving back, proving that volunteering is a path to personal growth and a brighter future

won GOLD at the Canada Winter Games on February 23, 1975 at the Sportplex in front of over 5,000 passionate fans
The team’s journey to gold was as much about unity and camaraderie as it was about skill Competing in the Central Alberta Junior B Hockey League, the Native Sons chose to stay together as a team, declining to add players from other teams for the Canada Games
They faced strong opponents at the Games, including the undefeated Team Ontario 3-2 in the semi-finals, and claimed gold with a 6-3 victory over Nova Scotia The Native Sons dominated league play with a 31-2 regular-season record and a flawless 12-0 playoff run, ultimately claiming the Alberta Junior B championship. Their season ended with an impressive 66-6-1 record, a provincial title, and a Canada Games gold medal
Beyond their on-ice achievements, the team served as positive role models, contributing to their community and the game of hockey They were inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022 50 years later, the friendships forged during that incredible season remain strong

5 WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD IN SPORT
A summary of an article on Active For Life
This article provides five key ways parents can support their children in sport:
Provide Emotional Support: Offer unconditional love and be a dependable source of encouragement, especially during stressful or challenging times, regardless of performance outcomes.
1 Emphasize Effort Over Outcome: Focus on effort and personal improvement rather than winning or losing to reduce anxiety and encourage motivation.
2. Foster Independence: Balance involvement in your child’s sport by setting boundaries while allowing them autonomy and responsibility, such as managing their equipment or being prepared for practices.
4.
3. Communicate and Align Goals: Understand your child’s goals in sport whether they aim for high achievement or simply enjoy participation and provide support aligned with their aspirations. Revisit goals as they grow and evolve.
Model Desired Behaviour: Let the coach take care of the technical and tactical advice and focus your feedback on the effort and attitude of your child. Follow children’s preferences for parental behaviour:
5. Before competitions, children want parents to help them relax and make sure they arrive on time.
a. During competitions, children want parents to encourage the entire team, maintain control of emotions, stay positive, and focus on effort rather than outcome.
c.
b. After competitions, children do want positive yet honest feedback, but parents should be careful to read their children’s mood before discussing performances.
