CLARENDON Clarendon is a slab serif typeface that originated in Britain in 1845. The early nineteenth century was currently in the middle of a large typeface “boom”, making the need for bolder typefaces that would be used on posters and for commercial printing quite evident. Clarendon’s creator, Robert Besley, decided to capitalize on this typeface development opportunity,
and set off to the drawing board. What he came up with was a font that utilized brackets rather than solid blocks, widened as the letter reached its main stroke, and had a much higher x-height than other similar fonts during that time—or in other words: Clarendon. Once Clarendon was released, it quickly became very popular and overtook similar fonts such as Iconic
and Egyptian’s prior established places within the typeface world. Clarendon remained on the fore front of the typeface community until a decline of interest hit during the early twentieth century. Unfortunately, by the time that 1923 came around, the font that had been practically famous nearly a century ago had been mostly forgotten.

Clarendon slab serif typefaces are a subgroup of the Egyptian slab serifs. The Clarendon slab serif is characterized by its heavy, blocky serifs and bracketing. While Clarendon’s similar Egyptian slab serif cousin has all those same features minus the brackets. This particular serif is considered to be very decorative and does well in eyecatching displays.
