Milan stands out as the most dynamic of all Fashion Weeks when it come to the accessories for the upcoming warm season. The leitmotiv that connects all the accessories collections shown on the catwalk is, without a shadow, colour. More often than not, that colour is red, either in strong, determined, full tones or in deep and slightly off shades. Alongside red, there are other dominant strong colours such as yellow, green and purple.

Well-structured accessories are full of details and decorations that make them a decisively important part, if not the focal point, of every outfit.

Shoes, bags, belts, eyewear and hats are often brightened up by luminous details such as metals buckles and chains, sequins, Swarovski crystals and pearls. The two main trends, well-defined but often blended in harmonious contrasts in terms of both colour and shape, are a Romantic/Baroque look, rich in iconic retro accessories, often mix&matched and filled with appliqués and decorative details such as semiprecious stones, rhinestones, embroideries, flowers in an harmonious and unique amalgam of colours.

The second trend is more rational and clean with geometric and practical shapes and volumes, often with urban or country details that provide a distinctive character in contrast bloc solid colours.

Milano per questa stagione si pone come la piazza più dinamica dal punto di vista delle collezioni di accessori. Il fil-rouge che unisce tutte le passerelle è sicuramente un dettaglio di colore negli accessori. Spesso questo colore è il rosso, forte, deciso, pieno o spento e profondo.

Accompagnano il rosso altri colori dominanti come giallo, verde e viola.

Gli accessori ben strutturati sono ricchi di dettagli e decori che ne fanno se non l’icona dell’outfit, sicuramente una parte determinante e indipendente. Spunti luminosi, come fibbie o catene in metallo, paillettes, cristalli Swarovski o perle, vivacizzano scarpe e borse, cinture, occhiali e cappelli. Le strutture spesso complesse sono ricche di dettagli che si dividono in due tendenze ben definite, le quali spesso si fondono tra loro creando degli armonici contrasti, sia per cromia che per forma. La prima tendenza Romantico-Barocca è ricchissima di accessori iconici e retrò anche sovrapposti tra loro. Tempestata di applicazioni o dettagli operati con pietre, ricami, fiori e dai colori che si mischiano e armonizzano tra loro fino a creare un unica amalgama cromatica. La seconda tendenza è più razionale e pulita, dalle linee geometriche e pratiche ma con dettagli spesso urban-country che le infondono carattere e dai colori monocromi prevalentemente block e in contrasto tra loro.

With a strong sportswear and technical imprint, the Annakiki collection examines in depth the abyss of our sacred dependence to smart phones. Therefore, classic accessories reproduce or reinterpret the iconic references to our daily connection to continuous communication. Rigid geometric bags or mini-bags are modulated on three base colours, ie. red, purple and green while shoes with definitely 1990’s shapes and volumes become notebooks full of messages.

Dall’impronta fortemente sportiva e tecnologica, la collezione Annakiki perlustra gli abissi della sacra dipendenza da smart-phone. Appaiono cosÏ accessori classici che riproducono o reinterpretano i riferimenti iconici del nostro quotidiano legato alla continua comunicazione. Le bags o mini-bags rigide e geometriche si modulano su tre colori base, rosso, viola e verde. Mentre le scarpe dal profilo assolutamente anni 90 diventano taccuino di messaggistica.

Una collezione anticonformista, che vuole resistere a quelle che sono le tendenze all’omologazione, riportando in auge vecchi capi, in un remix che stravolge i canoni estetici più noti portando in passerella look attuali e estremamente moderni. Dai dettagli sempre eccessivi e stravaganti anche per questa stagione gli accessori di Gucci si distinguono dalla massa per forme e originalità: marsupi logati indossati in vita, tracolle squadrate simili a postine, pochette autoironiche con il logo Gucci, ma anche borsette con dettagli in pitone dall’aria retrò cosi come gli occhiali da sole e da vista in stile anni 80 o le scarpe con tacco basso e dettagli gioiello.

Parisian women have always interpreted fashion to the fullest extent of its expressive potential. Therefore, once again, they will try and test every possible Spring/Summer 2018 trend including the dominant themes of Romantic Retro, Sportive and Practical, Menswear-inspired Classic. These three macro trends are complemented and enriched by a whole range of accessories, from time to time divided into more specific micro trends. The latter are in such abundance that ‘les madames parisienne’ are not going to miss any opportunity to show off their specific aesthetic attitude. The Paris Fashion Week designers focused on detail and created accessories of many very different types. Bags, for example, can be mini or maxi, with handles or with shoulder straps, structured or soft. Materials do not follow any precise diktat as leathers, fabrics, plastics, metals are all used in the same percentage, just as solid colours and prints and patterns. Footwear, on the other hand, has a common point: instead of stilettos, a whole range of sandals, boots, court shoes, sneakers in leather, plastic or rope with metallic brightness, with decorative details, in solid colours or patterned. But all of them though are comfortable.

La Donna Parigina ha sempre interpretato la moda al meglio della sua espressività e anche questa stagione non manca di testare ogni tendenza possibile per questa Spring-Summer 2018. I temi dominanti sono il Retrò Romantico, lo Sportivo e Pratico o il Classico spesso declinato in Maschile. Queste tre macro tendenze sono completate e arricchite da tutta una serie di accessori che le declina di volta in volta in ulteriori micro tendenze più specifiche, e queste sono davvero tante, a ribadire che la ‘madame parisienne’ non ha intenzione di lasciarsi sfuggire ogni opportunità di mostrare la sua attitudine estetica. I designer hanno lavorato nel dettaglio e creato accessori di tipologie davvero diverse. Le borse, ad esempio, possono essere mini o maxi, a mano o a tracolla, strutturate o morbide. Anche i materiali usati non seguono un diktat preciso: pelli, tessuti, plastiche, metalli e pietre, tutto è concesso. Tinte unite o fantasie sono usate in libertà. Le calzature invece hanno un punto in comune: al bando il tacco a spillo a favore di sandali, stivali, décolleté o sneakers. In pelle, in plastica o in corda. Con riflessi metallici, con decori, tinta unita o stampate. Tutte esigono una buona calzata.

Pur essendo nato come brand di jeans di lusso, oggi Acne Studios rappresenta una delle realtà più interessanti del sistema moda, che riesce a fondere insieme lo streetwear, un occhio molto attento alle nuove tendenze e, soprattutto, ai bisogni della loro clientela. I colori sono quelli dei macaroons e gli accessori visti in sfilata saranno, per l’ennesima volta, tra i pezzi culto della stagione.

The first test by Natacha Ramsay-Levi at the historic French brand Chloé proved that she is perfectly able to interpret the bon chic bon genre aesthetics for which the brand is famous around the world. Beautiful handbags with chain shoulder straps, also used as decorative details, are available in solid colours or decorated with patterns inspired by the 1970’s. Focus on boots inspired by the Wild West, sometimes made of python skin.

Natacha Ramsay-Levi è alla sua prima prova per lo storico marchio francese Chloé e riesce ad interpretare perfettamente la ragazza bon ton per cui il marchio è famoso in tutto il mondo. Belle le borse con catene usate come decoro o anche come tracolla, in colore unito così come decorate con ispirazione anni Settanta. Anche per lei grande uso di stivali ispirati al mondo west americano, qui declinati in pelle di pitone.

Dries Van Noten constantly uses a colour palette that has to defined perfect. A palette that in his latest collection ranges from orange to yellow, from brown to gold, from shocking pink to silver for sandals, boots and bags in both solid colours or floral prints. A collection that, as always, is experimental but extremely wearable and desirable. A special note goes to the shimmering brooches and earrings.

Dries Van Noten è uno dei migliori esempi su come saper usare sempre la perfetta palette colori. Si va dall’arancio al giallo, dal marrone all’oro, dal rosa shocking fino all’argento per sandali, stivali e borse sia in colore unito che stampati a fiori. Una collezione che come sempre è sperimentale estremamente portabile e acquistabile. Una nota particolare va alle spille e agli orecchini tutti scintillanti.

It is undeniable that fashion is a sign of the times. As we are currently living in very dark and unpredictable times, it is therefore understandable that a number of London-based designers found inspiration, and maybe comfort, in times and places, real or imagined, perceived to be more secure and safer than the world of today. An evidently apparent need for escapism that can be detected by the referencing a pre-internet world, as in the case of J.W.Anderson and Roksanda, or childhood and suburbia, respectively cited as sources of inspiration by Mary Katrantzou and Anya Hindmarch. How all of the above translates into the world of accessories? First and foremost in styles and shapes that are intentionally not confrontational, not too ostentatious or provocative, never bold, brash, overconfident. Consequentially, in the choice of reassuringly comforting cute colours like, for example, delicate pastels and watercolours and natural hues or, alternatively, bright tones that emanate positivity, energy, fun. The shapes are equally familiar and therefore comforting as epitomised by the oversize clutch bag shaped as a pillow by Mother of Pearl. What are the key trends suggested by the London Fashion Week designers? The use of transparent plastic, perspex, lucite. An exuberant and abundant use of colour. The combination of high tech design with decorative details, especially if tridimensional. The re-appearance of the sabot. Flat footwear and the return of kitten heels. New variations of the satchel bag. Round and cylindrical shaped handbags. High impact statement dangling earrings. The revival of straw and raffia hats. It is worth reminding that London Fashion Week welcomed some very high calibre international brands, namely Giorgio Armani, Versace and Tommy Hilfiger.

È innegabile che la moda sia uno specchio dei tempi. Giacché viviamo in tempi molto difficili caratterizzati da circostanze imprevedibili, è quindi comprensibile che alcuni stilisti di base a Londra abbiano trovato ispirazione, e forse conforto, in periodi e luoghi, reali o immaginari, considerati meno ardui e complicato del mondo dei nostri giorni. Un bisogno e una necessità di evasione dalla realtà contemporanea che appaiono evidenti nei riferimenti a un mondo prima dell’avvento dell’internet, come nel caso di J.W.Anderson e Roksanda, o all’infanzia e alle periferie cittadine, rispettivamente citate come fonti di ispirazione da Mary Katrantzou e Anya Hindmarch. Ma in che modo tutto ciò ha influenzato la creazione delle nuove collezioni di accessori? Innanzitutto il design non è mai intenzionalmente aggressivo, eccessivamente provocante, esagerato, vistoso, melodrammatico. Le scelte cromatiche danno la precedenza a colori rassicuranti e confortanti come, per esempio, delicate sfumature naturali, pastello e acquerellate ma anche tonalità forti che emanano positività, energia, allegria.

Anche le linee e le forme sono familiari, e quindi rassicuranti: un perfetto esempio è la pochette a forma di cuscino proposta da Mother of Pearl. Ma quali sono le tendenze chiave suggerite dagli stilisti e dai brand che hanno sfilato alla London Fashion Week? L’uso di plastica, perspex, lucide trasparenti. Un abbondante ed esuberante uso del colore. La fusione di design tecnologico con dettagli decorativi, soprattutto se tridimensionali. Il revival dei sabot e dei tacchi a rocchetto. Il focus sulle scarpe basse. Le nuove versioni delle borse a secchiello e a forma rotonda o cilindrica. Gli orecchini pendenti ad alto impatto visivo. Il ritorno sulla scena dei cappelli in paglia e di rafia. Vale la pena ricordare che la London Fashion Week ha dato il benvenuto a marchi internazionali del calibro di Giorgio Armani, Versace e Tommy Hilfiger.

“I was inspired by suburbia. There’s something reassuring and boring but, actually very special, about it” reveals Anya Hindmarch about ‘Absurbia’, her aptly titled collection. A contagious sense of humour permeates the shoppers decorated with sequinned and feathered parrots, the stunning pinwheel hand pleated round bags and the hand quilted ‘Chubby’ bags with charms shaped as alphabet letters.

“C’è qualcosa di rassicurante e noioso ma molto speciale nel vivere in periferia” rivela la stilista a proposito della fonte d’ispirazione di ‘Absurbia’, la divertente e affascinante collezione composta da shoppers con pappagalli in paillettes e piume, borsette rotonde in pelle plissettata a mano a forma di girandola, le borse ‘Chubby’ in pelle trapuntata a mano con charms a forma di lettera dell’alfabeto.

A specific avant-garde approach focused on materials appearance and on textile experimentation distinguishes the work of Faustine Steinmetz. Distressed, torn, partially destroyed, painted over: texture plays a pivotal role across the accessory range presented at her very first catwalk show. In line with the current logomania trend, the monogram logo appears on bags, belts, bijoux.

Uno specifico approccio focalizzato sull’aspetto materico dei tessuti e sulla sperimentazione tessile contraddistingue tutte le collezioni di Faustine Steinmetz. Sdrucite, strappate, parzialmente distrutte, verniciate: le texture giocano un ruolo fondamentale negli accessori presentati durante il debutto in passerella della giovane stilista.

In linea con l’attuale logomania, il monogramma appare su borse, cinture, bijoux.

ORIGAMI BY POMIKAKI

iRi was launched by Janet Yeung, a young designer who grew up in South Korea, Hong Kong and New York where she recently graduated at the Parsons School of Design.

The label combines the Made in Italy knowhow with Asian design codes characterised by a sporty approach. A wide range of materials, including neoprene and nylon, were used for the pieces of the ‘Playing on Paper’ collection where drawings made by some children were applied on high heels and glossy materials as details in pop colours.

The collection was launched on the label website in October 2017.

David Romano, the creative mind of the label, initiated the Origami project: a modular bag that finds inspiration from the Japanese technique to fold paper in artistic ways. From the principle of constant transformation, the bag takes shape in two different sizes, combining the noble folding technique with a sleek and clean, functional and comfortable design. The Origami is easy to disassemble and the component panels are interchangeable: a perfect accessory for cosmopolitan and dynamic women.

David Romano, mente creativa del brand, ha dato alla luce il progetto “Origami”: una borsa componibile che trova ispirazione dall’omonima tecnica giapponese di piegare la carta e farne un’arte. Dal principio di costante trasformazione, prende forma una borsa presentata in due misure, che unisce una nobile arte ad un design elegante e pulito, ma allo stesso tempo funzionale e comoda. Origami è infatti facile da smontare e i pannelli che la compongono diventano interscambiabili: un accessorio perfetto per una donna cosmopolita e dinamica.

Sporty Japan ROSAMUNDA The Rosamunda Spring/Summer 2018 is an explosion of colour and creativity. Available in different heights, the platform shoes allow the wearer the chance look every day. Pastel stripes are matched with rhinestones and the multiple straps create games of pleasant harmony while the platforms remind us of the Geta sandals worn by Japanese geishas but in a rather sporty and at the same time elegant version.

FEMALE IDENTITY AND FASHION ACCESSORIES, THE SECRET OF A SUCCESSFUL UNSTOPPABLE

Vic Matié is a brand that I have always appreciated, even loved, for its strong aesthetics, never trivial but always balanced and elegantly harmonious. During the Spring/Summer 2018 presentation in Milan, I had the pleasure to chat with the longstanding creative director Silvia Curzi. I feel that this is a perfect interview in describing a woman who doesn’t fall into the stereotype trap. Never trivial, a “normal woman” with a strong identity in terms of aesthetics and character.

The Vic Matié Spring/Summer 2018 collection offers many frivolously feminine details like the colour red, bows, crystals and so on. Why did you decide to introduce so many details of this kind, a novelty for a brand with a frill-free DNA?

There are always two components in my mind when thinking and “building” each collection. On one hand, I always try to stick to the leitmotif that binds everything we produce, season after season and, of course, to remain faithful to the brand DNA. On the other hand, I have to keep an eye on what’s happening right now, on contemporary aesthetic codes, on the constant evolution of women’s lifestyle.

Clearly, it has been difficult to incorporate elements in the collection that are quite distant from my own aesthetics. But I believe that looking in only one direction will, inevitably, end up weakening the brand. The real challenge is to be able to shape each element according to our own philosophy and do it in such a way that the core characteristics of the brand are not betrayed.

The relationship with femininity does not stop to aesthetics but goes deep into women’s personality. What are the elements that identify the Vic Matié woman?

I am not very inclined to “draw boundaries” or to identify and categorise women that are to be considered, in a way or another, ideal. Women and contemporary life are way too complex to be able to give precise indications.

What remains constant in my mind when I think of who chooses, or should choose, a Vic Matié piece is the idea of a woman who loves fashion and wants to express herself through it. But she also knows how to make alternative choices that are not mainstream fashion because she is able to appreciate the design content and a the philosophy of a timeless brand that tells a real, authentic, concrete story.

From where did the new project focused on women as “people” originate? What are its goals?

The project stemmed from a thought of mine that Sabrina Ciofi, who is in charge of brand communication, was able to make happen exactly as I had in mind. I believe that when a person decides to choose a brand they do not only decide to wear a dress or, in our case a pair of shoes, but also to communicate a background of values and a story that evolves over time. I wanted to start sharing the story of our world and of “our” hypothetical women. Women who are absolutely normal but at the same time special in their own way because of their aesthetic choices, because of their own stories, because of the way they approach life. I also wanted to create a kind of community connected to the brand that would connect all women, even if if they are not our customers, who share a specific approach to fashion and a vision of the world of women in general.

How did Silvia Curzi come to create such a strong and unique identity in her chosen profession?

First of all, thank you for the recognition of my effort in keeping as stable and constant as possible the identity of the brand. Remaining faithful to my own vision, which is the same of the brand, and at the same time creating products in the very volatile context of today is perhaps the most difficult thing in my work. This is because unlike other brands, and I want to point this out, behind Vic Matié there is a real company with so many people working in Italy day after day. If I were not to think about this aspect and its implications, it would obviously be easier to stick to my own vision without compromising. The difficult thing is to combine brand DNA and brand values, which cannot be ever forgotten, with the so-called “numbers” and targets that allow the company structure with all its employees to carry on. Besides, this is everyday challenge: it makes us all sleep a little less but it also keeps us alive.

Freedom, independence, autonomy. This is what the New York catwalks suggested to women for Spring/Summer 2018. Women who are free spirits and who love comfortable functional accessories. Independent women who have made of sportswear their weapon of choice in order to resume full control of themselves. Autonomous women who wear this attitude like an “accessory”, just as The Great Apple requires. Women whose self-management is also an aesthetic self-definition, day after day, without continuity, but always wearing accessories that adapt to specific needs, moods, occasions. More specifically, footwear becomes technical and comfortable, even if sporting more or less vertiginous heels. Soles are often made of rubber and more often than not technical details stand out for originality. Generally more structured than in previous seasons, the bags accessorise each look with different sizes and shapes, but they are always extremely functional. The interpretation of fashion on the New York Fashion Week catwalks is indeed largely geared towards functionality, as befits the DNA of American fashion.

Libertà, indipendenza, autonomia. Questo è tutto ciò che vuole la donna newyorchese per la primavera estate 2018. Uno spirito libero che si adorna di accessori comodi e funzionali. Una donna indipendente che dello sport ha fatto la sua arma per riprendere a pieno il possesso di se stessa, e questa attitudine la indossa come ‘accessorio’. Autonoma come solo ‘La Grande Mela’ può accettare una donna. La sua autogestione la porta ad autodefinirsi anche esteticamente, giorno dopo giorno, senza continuità ma indossando accessori che si declinano alle esigenze e allo spirito. Nello specifico, le calzature diventano tecniche e comode, anche quando si inerpicano su tacchi più o meno vertiginosi. Spesso le suole sono in gomma e ancora più spesso i dettagli tecnici spiccano per originalità. Le borse, tendenzialmente più strutturate delle altre stagioni accompagnano per dimensioni e forma il look, ma restano sempre anche loro, estremamente funzionali. Una moda principalmente soggetta alla funzionalità quella che caratterizza le passerelle di NewYork, come del resto richiede il DNA degli States.

A homage to hip hop mixed with haute couture details is the leitmotiv of the latest Marc Jacobs collection. An explosion of references create sumptuous sporty-chic outfits derived from the famous Spring/Summer 1993 grunge collection for Perry Ellis with more than satisfying results. Floral prints and sequins feature in each lavishly colourful piece. The silk turbans by Stephen Jones embellish each look, also accessorised with postman’s bags, hobo bags, buckets bags and sporty seabags. Multicoloured sandals worn with socks capture our gaze with colourful stone details, just like the patent leather high boots.

The Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection expresses fully the eccentric and a bit tomboyish attitude of Rihanna, the popstar who has been very successfully designing for Puma for years. The clothes and accessories for next Spring/Summer are inspired by extreme sports: there are many references to motocross technical apparel as well as surf and diving attire. Sunglasses with geometric shapes and fluorescent details, visors, bodysuits, overalls that resemble diving suits, oversized zipped jackets, over the knee boots similar to those worn by motorbike riders, flip flops with 12cm heels, belts that mark the waistline but act also as shoulder straps for bags, skirts and hats. These are just some of the ingredients that made this catwalk show one of the most anticipated and acclaimed of New York Fashion Week.
