Disney Life Style Event by Andrea Malavolti
That Walt Disney is a global brand that can also influence the world of fashion was further demonstrated by the first Disney Event Lifestyle in Italy, a unique event that brought together for the first time the best Disney collaborations with famous designers and brands. Some amazing collections in perfect balance between past, present, future, as well as several inspirational projects and outfits, were presented to the press and to fashion professionals at the Salone dei Tessuti Galtrucco in Milan. The initiative stressed the role that Disney is able to play in fashion by becoming a real influencer for designers and brands by the likes of Valentino, Cruciani, Faliero Sarti, Iceberg, Aniye By, Adidas, Reebok and JeanCharles de Castelbajac, to name just a few. The stars were, of course, the most iconic Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Alice in Wonderland and all the various Princesses with all their unique features and details. Also present in highly original collections, the Marvel superheroes and the Star Wars characters.
Che Walt Disney fosse un brand globale in grado di influenzare anche il mondo del fashion è stato ulteriormente dimostrato in occasione del primo Disney Lifestyle Event italiano, un evento unico che ha riunito per la prima volta le migliori collaborazioni Disney con stilisti e griffe famosi. Al Salone dei Tessuti Galtrucco di Milano sono state presentate, alla stampa e agli addetti ai lavori, alcune stupefacenti collezioni in equilibrio perfetto tra passato, presente e futuro, oltre a diversi progetti e outfit ispirazionali. L’appuntamento meneghino ha sottolineato il ruolo che Disney ha saputo svolgere nel campo della moda, diventando un vero e proprio influencer per designer e brand come Valentino, Cruciani, Faliero Sarti, Iceberg, Aniye By, Adidas, Reebok e Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, solo per citarne alcuni. Protagonisti naturalmente i personaggi Disney più iconici, come Minnie e Topolino, Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie e le Principesse, ripresi nelle loro caratteristiche e nei loro dettagli; ma non mancavano i supereroi dei mondi Marvel e Star Wars, con collezioni di grande originalità.

n conversation with Antonio Marras about the ‘Giro Giro Tondo, Casca il Mondo…’ exhibition
How did the idea of the exhibition originate? By chance. Some time ago we accepted with enthusiasm an invitation by Annalisa Seoni to view the archives of the Associazione Italia-Russia in via Cadore 16 in Milan. The invitation did not fall on deaf ears, because I am a fan of archives in general and because Russia, the Great Mother Russia, has a particularly strong appeal on me. Perhaps because of my passion for great Russian novelists, innovative film directors, sensitive poets or just because I feel close to Russia in terms of feelings and taste. Wandering in the Associazione Italia/Russia among shelves, books, illustrations and material of all kinds, I saw a great number of black & white and colour photographs with faded tones of the first colour images. All well cataloged and divided by year, subject, purpose. All propaganda photos, intended to show the world know how idyllic and perfect the CCCP or USSR was. Why did you choose archive children’s photos? It was a natural choice. I often work with children and on the theme of childhood. I love children’s work, not yet spoiled as in the words of the great artist Maria Lai from schooling and from teachers who impose rules, regulations, restrictions, boundaries. Years ago in Alghero in Italy, I dedicated to childhood an edition of the ‘Trama Doppia’ art event that I organised for 5 years. The title was ‘‘Minyonies’, a term that in the Alghero dialect indicates the hum created by children’s voices and screams when they leave school or play in large groups. I invited 13 artists to face their memories and childhood. As a starting point I reassembled film footage shot over a rather long time from the 1950’s to the early 1960’s by Don Gallo, a legendary parish priest in Alghero. The footage is very beautiful and definitely brings you back to a childhood spent fantasising about what we will be as grown-ups. It immediately triggered in me the desire to build on something that, once again as always happens in my work, would act as a bridge between memory, suggestions from the past, the present. The images show children wearing aprons, starched white collars, huge bows, moving and acting as a compact yet rugged noisy group.

That time the show was set in the perfect location: a primary school that is still been used. A traditional school, built in the 1930’s, with a front yard and classrooms along a long corridor. Each artist chose a space or classroom or decided to be outside or in the spaces in between. The archive photos show a prosperous progressive Soviet Union: is there a thread running through your work and these photos and what they represent? Well, surely the idea of having to work with material that could be defined “surreal” fascinated me immensely. I was intrigued by all these happy, smiling, excited children, going for X-ray examination or taking part to “mens sana in corpore sano” activities, always with ecstatic and joyful expressions. It made me think about Yael Bartana’s work who reproduced with Jews and Arabs photographs based on original images with a heroic style.

91 Each of your fashion shows tells a story: would you like to tell a story to children too, maybe by designing a children’s collection? I would love to as, for that matter, storytelling belongs to children and childhood. I designed menswear collections dedicated to school teachers, to the teacher in the ‘Cuore, The Heart of a Boy’ book when children in the classroom were drawing and then sang in chorus at the end of the show. I did collections dedicated to puppets and fairy tales, subjects officially “for children only”. Of course I would love to make children’s clothes for children. Let’s wait and see…
What does the Russia of those years represent to you? Hard to say and too complex. The 10 days that shook the world had such a powerful impact on global history that it seems superficial to summarise them in a nutshell. I can only say that I have always looked with great interest to revolutions and to stories about ideal countries. If you had access to a contemporary photographic archive, which country would you have chosen instead of Russia? Definitely Africa. A multifaceted, immense, troubled and yet mysterious continent. Incidentally, Africa has produced a number of extraordinary photographers. Are there any development plans for this exhibition? Yes, of course. I’m working on expanding the ‘Giro Giro Tondo, Casca il Mondo…’ theme and also other themes. Most certainly there will be more developments in the near future. Often, both in your collections and in your art projects, there is a reference to the world of childhood: what attracts you to it? I am attracted by both children’s instinctive attitude and their naughtiness. Only children can be cruel without being aware of it and at the same time be magic. Yes, magic. Able to do things that one could never imagine. What moment of your childhood would you photograph if you could? A summertime Sunday. My whole huge family plus friends and relatives with their families, troops of children at dawn to choose the best spot on the beach. Putting up umbrellas, tents, tables, chairs and everything you can imagine for playing in the sand: buckets, spades, lilos, moulds for sand pies, balls, bowls, rackets and so on. And then lunch with gnocchi in tomato sauce, cutlets, cakes and then waiting three never-ending hours before jumping in the sea…

Com’è nata l’idea di questo progetto artistico? Per caso. Tempo fa abbiamo accettato con entusiasmo l’invito di Annalisa Seoni a visionare l’archivio dell’associazione Italia/Russia situato in via Cadore 16 a Milano. Invito non caduto inascoltato, un po’ perché sono un patito degli archivi e ancora di più perché la Russia, la grande madre Russia, mi attrae particolarmente. Forse in virtù della mia passione per i grandi romanzieri russi, per l’innovazione dei suoi cineasti, per la sensibilità dei suoi poeti o solo perché mi sento vicino per comune sentire e per gusti. All’associazione Italia/Russia, aggirandomi tra corridoi, scaffali, libri, illustrazioni e materiali di ogni genere, ho visto tante, tantissime
fotografie in bianco e nero e a colori. Quei colori stinti delle prime fotografie a colori. Tutte bene catalogate e suddivise per anno, per argomento e finalità. Tutte foto di propaganda, destinate a far sapere al mondo quanto l’universo CCCP fosse idilliaco e perfetto. Perché dell’archivio ha deciso di scegliere le foto dei bambini? E’ stato naturale. Ho lavorato spesso con i bambini e sul tema dell’infanzia. Adoro il lavoro dei bambini, non ancora rovinato (come diceva la grande artista Maria Lai) dalla scuola, dalle maestre che impongono regole, disciplina, argini e confini. Ad Alghero, anni fa, in occasione della rassegna artistica TRAMA DOPPIA che ho organizzato per 5 anni, ho dedicato un’edizione all’infanzia. “MINYONIES” era il titolo che, in algherese, significa quel brusio di voci e urla di bambini che si sente quando escono da scuola o giocano numerosi. Ho invitato 13 artisti a misurarsi con i propri ricordi e con l’essere stato bambino. Come spunto ho rimontato degli spezzoni di riprese girati, in un arco di tempo piuttosto lungo a partire dagli anni Cinquanta fino all’inizio dei Sessanta, da Don Gallo, mitico parroco di Alghero. Gli spezzoni sono belli e sicuramente riportano indietro a quell’infanzia passata a fantasticare su come sarò da grande, e hanno fatto scattare immediatamente il desiderio di costruirci sopra qualcosa che, ancora una volta, come succede sempre nel mio lavoro, agisca da ponte tra la memoria e le suggestioni del passato e il presente. Le immagini fanno vedere i bambini, con il grembiule, il collo bianco inamidato e il fiocco enorme, che si muovono e agiscono in quel gruppo compatto eppure frastagliato e rumoroso. Tra l’altro in quell’occasione, ho ambientato la mostra in un luogo perfetto: una scuola elementare ancora funzionante. Di quelle tradizionali, costruite negli anni Trenta, con il giardino davanti e le aule che si aprono lungo il grande corridoio. Ciascun artista ha scelto il suo spazio, la sua aula, ha deciso di stare fuori o ancora nei luoghi interstiziali.
