HANDBOOK TO RECOGNISE How to contradict a friend while talking about creativity

I’m curious by nature and I really love knowing what the people around me think of some topics or, even better, what they imagine about some question I make. Recently I’ve heard using a lot the word “creativity” and I’ve started thinking about this word and what it means to me.

It’s a vague concept, hard to define and often having lots of different meanings. Let’s start from the dictionary: Creativity: the use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness. At a recent dinner at a friend’s place – a friend that I’d describe very little creativity-inclined – I asked what creaivity meant for him and for the other people invited. The immediate answer came from the host who said: “It’s a too-much-used word hiding the mediocrity of those people who are sure to be creative”. The host is a real fellow to me, a quite difficult person but very intelligent who always gives me new perspectives about anything. After his words I decided to ask what creativity means to the people around me, trying to investigate this attitude as a form of pure expression inflected in every field. I have to say that I have some problems to give a definition of creativity, it is some kind of jumbleletting some people make up ideas going far from the banality around them. I think creativity means being out of constraints and schemes without the need of worthlessoddities. It means having a brain being able to go where other people’s can’t for choice or inability. I then asked the same to some journalists to think things through: here are the answers. Ivan Carvalho, Italian correspondent for the prestigious english magazine Monocle says that “Creativity relates to imagination and no place excels more at creative production than Italy” adds that “It’s no wonder that in this environment Italy’s artisans have thrived. There is so much inspiration right in front of them to stimulate their senses and help them to craft new shapes for a supple leather upper for a gentleman’s brogue or a sinuous line on a evening gown” and “What’s remarkable today is that the artisan workshops/botteghe/laboratori thrive even as the Italian state, no one large entity and very weak, does not provide much support. In spite of this the creative minds of

artisans and designers working with them have managed to realize a wealth of beautifully executed pieces that remain the envy of the world.” Maurizio Ceccato, of the literary masthead Watt, tells us that “If imaginations had a limit or a border we’d be forced to redraw them every time. Our approach to preparing a publication is working with images and words intertwined that ultimately weave each other into a cross stitch embroidery”. Sonia Perfetti, director of Collezioni Haute Couture & Sposa and Collezioni Donna declares that creativity “Is a way of seeing the world, it’s looking at it with the idea that, in spite of everything, nothing is as it seems. It’s a gift, the soul of all creatures on earth. Aren’t a rose and its petals a miracle of creativity? Isn’t the iridescent chameleon a prodigy of evolutionary creativity? Happiness and uneasiness stem from owning it: it’s hard to be creative and quiet. There is something in it that’s moving and needs expression. It’s being in love with beauty in all its forms - reproducing them with words, a paintbrush, a chisel - or just imagining things. It’s sweetness and anxiety, aggression and passion, the essence of our ego, that small self sleeping inside ourselves.”

And, lastly, my fellow citizen Alessandro Martini of the local yet global Il Giornale dell’Arte who said that “The concept of creativity seems increasingly connected to that of innovation. The press, politics and economics indicate one or the other as essential engines for economic growth. And indeed a non creative society isn’t innovative and doesn’t grow financially (and, even before, culturally and socially). Creativity has always been a source of change in taste and thus of mind and society development. However, creativity requires time and isn’t often immediately perceived, shared or none the less accepted. Creatives are original and so - by definition - solitary. And, in the best of cases, avant-garde. Creative art can be fully functional for the market, but isn’t necessarily immediately useful for the economy. That’s how things are and should be. Creativity and ideas are more important than money, more indispensable, and in the end even more “profitable”.

The idea that my fellow has been contradicted is enough to better sleep. At least tonight.

REAL CREATIVITY Come imparare a smentire un amico in tema di creatività Sono curioso per natura e mi piace enormemente sapere cosa le altre persone pensino di alcuni argomenti o meglio ancora cosa fantastichino nei confronti di alcune domande che mi pongo. Da un po’ di tempo sento usare in modo quasi eccessivo la parola creatività e ho cominciato a riflettere su questo termine e su cosa significhi per me intimamente. E’ un concetto vago, difficile da definire e che spesso comprende decine di significati diversi tra loro. Partiamo dalla lingua italiana, che mi è sempre di grade aiuto, citando il vocabolario Treccani: creatività: sostantivo femminile - Virtù creativa, capacità di creare con l’intelletto, con la fantasia. In psicologia, il termine è stato assunto a indicare un processo di dinamica intellettuale che ha come fattori caratterizzanti: particolare sensibilità ai problemi, capacità di produrre idee, originalità nell’ideare, capacità di sintesi e di analisi, capacità di definire e strutturare in modo nuovo le proprie esperienze e conoscenze. Ad una recente cena da un amico che definirei poco incline alla creatività (più per partito preso che per incapacità) ho chiesto cosa fosse per lui e gli altri commensali la creatività, domanda che arrivava dopo una serie di loro considerazioni che definirei eccessivamente superficiali. L’immediata risposta del padrone di casa è stata quantomeno creativa e si è infilata tra il mio cuore (poco creativo purtroppo) e lo stomaco (ancora meno del primo) che si è ritorto al solo ascoltare quelle parole: “Un termine abusato, usato solo per nascondere la mediocrità di coloro che si reputano, appunto, creativi”. Definirei il soggetto in questione un amico fraterno, un personaggio un po’ difficile e dalle grandi sicurezze che però mi apre nuovi squarci ogni volta che apre bocca. E per non smentirsi anche questa volta mi ha aperto un mondo che mi ha portato a chiedere in giro cosa sia la creatività e non per forza nel sistema moda. La domanda riguarda un livello superiore, vuole indagare la creatività come forma di espressione pura e declinabile in ogni ambito. Devo dire che faccio fatica a darne una definizione, questo magma che permette ad alcuni eletti di produrre idee che fuoriescono dall’ordinarietà che ci circonda. La creatività credo significhi essere fuori dalle costrizioni degli schemi ma senza il bisogno di inutili bizzarrie, è la fortuna di avere un cervello che possa andare là dove i cervelli altrui non arrivano per scelta o impossibilità. Ho quindi posto la domanda ad una serie di giornalisti, tanto per chiarirmi le idee: riporto quindi le risposte più stimolanti. Ivan Carvalho, corrispondente dall’Italia per la prestigiosa rivista inglese Monocle, sostiene che “la creatività ha a che fare con l’immaginazione e non esiste luogo al mondo in grado di eccellere in questo campo

quanto l’Italia.” e aggiunge che “non pare strano quindi che la creatività abbia prosperato in questo Paese perché gli artigiani hanno come ispirazione un luogo di fronte a loro che stimola i loro sensi e li aiuta a produrre nuove forme” e chiude dicendo che “nonostante il poco aiuto dello Stato, le menti creative degli artigiani e dei disegnatori che lavorano con loro hanno realizzato pezzi che sono invidiati in tutto il mondo”. Maurizio Ceccato, della testata di letteratura Watt, ci dice che “Se le fantasticazioni avessero un limite o un perimetro bisognerebbe ogni volta ridisegnarle. Lavorare alle immagini che si intrecciano con le parole, in modo che una tessa l’altra in un ricamo punto-croce, è il teorema che intavoliamo quando prepariamo una pubblicazione”. Sonia Perfetti, direttore di Collezioni Haute Couture & Sposa e Collezioni Donna afferma che la creatività “E’ un modo di vedere il mondo, è il guardarlo con l’idea che niente è come sembra, nonostante tutto. E’ un dono, è l’anima di tutte le creature di questa terra. La rosa i suoi petali non sono un miracolo di creatività? Il cangiante camaleonte non è un prodigio di creatività evoluzionistica? Possederla è felicità e tormento, difficile essere creativi e pacatamente tranquilli, dentro c’è qualcosa che si muove e vuole esprimersi. E’ essere innamorati del bello in tutte le sue forme e riprodurle con le parole, i tratti di un pennello, uno scalpello, oppure solamente immaginare cose. E’ dolcezza e ansia, aggressività e passione, è l’essenza del nostro io, di quel piccolo sé che sonnecchia o dorme dentro di noi.” Arriviamo infine al mio concittadino Alessandro Martini del torinese ma globale Il Giornale dell’Arte il quale afferma che “Il concetto di creatività appare sempre più legato a quello di innovazione. Stampa, politica, economia indicano l’una e l’altro quali motori indispensabili della crescita economica.

E certo è così: una società non creativa non è innovativa e non cresce economicamente (e, prima ancora, culturalmente e socialmente). La creatività da sempre è motore del cambiamento del gusto e quindi dello sviluppo delle menti e della società. Ma la creatività ha tempi lunghi, non sempre viene immediatamente recepita, né condivisa e tanto meno accettata. Il creativo è originale, e quindi per definizione solitario. È, nei casi migliori, avanguardia. E i modi dell’arte creativa non necessariamente servono nell’immediato all’economia, anche se possono essere pienamente funzionali al mercato. Così è, e così è giusto che sia. La creatività e le idee sono più importanti dei soldi, più indispensabili, e alla fin fine anche più “redditizie” ”.

L’idea che il mio fraterno amico sia stato smentito mi basta per dormire meglio. Almeno stanotte.

The Centre Pompidou stages the first thorough retrospective of Jeff Koons in Europe till the end of April. This unprecedented exhibition allows one to fully appreciate a body of work that marked the contemporary artistic and cultural landscape. No other show has previously united his work in an exhaustive chronological journey covering its entire production. Curated by Scott Rothkopf, the show examines more than three decades of the artist’s work and includes about 120 pieces, some of the most famous and controversial images of our time, along with previews of his new creations. Designed in collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art, “Jeff Koons: la rétrospective” invites visitors to look without prejudices at the work of the author of the famous steel bunny, who was described as “the ultimate pop artist” and created works that have become contemporary icons. A product polished and presented with an explicit window display strategy, characterized by an impersonal style that draws on the collective imagination of mass society, from comics to musical legends, always characterised by a simple, naive and direct communication. With its historical and chronological approach, the retrospective highlights the different cycles of the artist’s work: Inflatables, Pre New, The New, Equilibrium, Statuary, Banality, Made in Heaven, Celebration, Easy Fun, Easy Fun Etheral, Popeye, Hulk Elvis, Gazin Ball. From the first pieces that reflect the art of the time in which they were produced, to the current works that implicitly communicate with the history of classical art.

Il Centre Pompidou mette in scena la prima approfondita retrospettiva dedicata a Jeff Koons in Europa fino alla fine di aprile. Questa mostra senza precedenti permette di apprezzare pienamente un corpo di lavoro che ha segnato il paesaggio artistico e culturale contemporaneo.

Nessun’altra mostra ha precedentemente riunito il suo lavoro in un itinerario cronologico esaustivo che copra tutta la sua produzione. Until 9 May 2015, the Galerie des Galeries, the cultural space of the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in Paris, will host Arlequine, the new exhibition of the French artist Karina Bisch, who turns out to be not only a painter but also a sculptor, designer and production designer. In her eclecticism, she can mix different forms of art with creative and unexpected results. The exhibition space is now transformed into a theatre: the actors on the stage are six mannequins whose clothes were made by Karina. These characters are surrounded by walls covered with a 70-meter long black and white canvas to which Bisch devoted three months of work. This opens windows that allow one to admire her colour-dominated paintings: the paintings of the artist display her passion for geometric forms, note that her models and sources of inspiration are Pablo Picasso, Ellsworth Kelly and Sonia Delaunay. The title of the exhibition, Arlequine, stages one of the most famous masks of the Commedia dell’Arte in a female version, with her dress in coloured diamonds. This is the scene that appears to the spectator-visitor, who is an active part of the show. Karina Bisch likes to “play” with materials and techniques, loves to experiment, loves to transform. She examines the historical avant-garde closely and then changes it to adapt it to her needs, her main objective is to integrate the arts to every aspect of life.

Her work has been shown not only in Europe, but also in the United States as well as being part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Fino al 9 maggio 2015 la Galerie des Galeries, lo spazio culturale delle Galeries Lafayette Haussmann a Parigi, ospiterà Arlequine, la nuova mostra dell’artista francese Karina Bisch, che si rivela non solo pittrice, ma anche scultrice, stilista e scenografa. Un eclettismo il suo che combina in modo creativo e inaspettato le diverse forme dell’arte. Lo spazio espositivo viene trasformato in teatro: i protagonisti sul palcoscenico sono sei manichini i cui vestiti sono stati realizzati da Karina stessa.

Questi personaggi sono circondati da pareti ricoperte da una tela in bianco e nero lunga 70 metri a cui la Bisch ha dedicato tre mesi di lavoro. Su questa si aprono finestre che permettono di ammirare i suoi dipinti in cui domina il colore: i quadri della pittrice non smentiscono anche la sua passione per le forme geometriche, ricordiamo infatti che i suoi modelli e le sue fonti d’ispirazione sono Pablo Picasso, Ellsworth Kelly e Sonia Delaunay. Il titolo stesso della mostra, Arlequine, mette in scena, al femminile, una delle maschere più famose della Commedia dell’Arte, con il suo vestito a losanghe colorate. Ecco dunque il colpo d’occhio che si presenta allo spettatore-visitatore: lui stesso sarà parte dello spettacolo. Karina Bisch ama “giocare” con i materiali e le tecniche, ama sperimentare, ama trasformare. Esamina da vicino le avanguardie storiche per poi stravolgerle e adattarle ai suoi bisogni, il suo obiettivo principale è quello di integrare l’arte ad ogni aspetto della vita. Le sue opere sono state esposte non solo in Europa, ma anche negli Stati Uniti e sono incluse nella collezione del Museo di Arte Moderna di Parigi.

Some time ago Joan Collins unashamedly admitted, “Thea’s are the only clothes I never thrown away”. Just like Elizabeth Taylor, Faye Dunaway, Barbara Streisand and a great number of movie and music stars, Joan Collins was seduced by the rich and decadent originality of Thea Porter’s bohemian chic interpretation of fashion and interior design. And, as a matter of fact, her work is nowadays appreciated by style icons such as Kate Moss, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, Julia Roberts, and Nicole Richie. The Fashion and Textile Museum in London dedicates until May 3rd the first-ever exhibition to a fashion and interior designer who was extremely successful and equally influential for almost two decades thanks to a unique combination of Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and North African influences. The show aims to highlight the importance of her work and to showcase it to the younger generations. Comprising of over 150 exhibits, the retrospective focuses on Thea’s journey from her childhood in Jerusalem, Damascus, and Syria to the arrival to London in 1964 where she set up at first as an interior designer. Her first steps in fashion were focused on menswear and her early designs attracted the attention of many rock stars including the Beatles and Pink Floyd. The other sections on the exhibition focus on her seven key womenswear signature looks - the women’s collection was introduced in 1968 - including the ‘Abaya’ or kaftan, the ‘Gipsy’ dress, the ‘Chazara’ jacket, and the ‘Faye’ dress, trace her evolution from exotic looks to her 1930’s and 1940’s influenced collections and chart the exceptional success of her business. A whole section is dedicated to textiles and fabrics, a key element of Thea’s work.

Il Fashion and Textile Museum a Londra allestisce nelle sue sale fino al 3 maggio la prima mostra dedicata a una stilista e interior designer che riscosse molto successo per quasi due decenni grazie ad un’originalissima combinazione di referenze mediorientali, nordafricane e centro-asiatiche. La mostra si propone di sottolineare l’importanza del suo lavoro soprattutto alle giovani generazioni grazie a una selezione di oltre 150 capi. La retrospettiva traccia il tragitto di Thea dall’infanzia a Gerusalemme, Damasco e in Siria sino all’arrivo a Londra nel 1964 e gli inizi come interior designer. I primi passi di Thea nel mondo della moda sono focalizzati sulla moda uomo: i suoi capi furono indossati da molte rock star tra cui i Beatles e i Pink Floyd. Le altre sezioni della mostra sono focalizzate sui look donna più importanti - il womenswear fu introdotto nel 1968 - tra cui ‘l’Abaya’ o caftano, l’abito ‘Gipsy’, la giacca ‘Chazara’ e l’abito ‘Faye’. Alexander Wang WOMEN IN BLACK Total black at Alexander Wang who translates the single colour choice into garments with the usual sporty features but laden with dark emotions, hovering between punk and conceptual minimalism of Japanese mould. Thin metal chains give a sense of coherence by defining outlines and edges and by brightening up the only apparent flatness of a total black look with technical high performance materials and macro details. A twist for the finale: maxi bomber jackets and parkas with wide hoods as bright as crumpled metal plates.

Nero assoluto sulla passerella di Alexander Wang, che traduce l’omologazione cromatica in capi dalle consuete fisionomie sportive, ma carichi di sentimenti noir, in bilico tra derive punk e minimalismo concettuale di stampo nipponico. Sottili catene metalliche a dare coerenza alla collezione, definendo una bordatura o un profilo e illuminando l’apparente piattezza del total black.

Gucci GENDERLESS INTUITION Something that has yet to happen, but has already been said. Maybe. A futuristic perspective on the past, interpretation of an ambiguous and possibilistic present.

Time contaminations, not exactly decipherable, dictate a path of recovery and reinterpretation of issues related to the past, exonerating it from any nostalgic drift. Alessandro Michele repeats fathomed concepts with the men’s collection, energising them with deeper meanings, giving an interpretation of reality delicately balanced between testimonies and prophecies, man and woman, in the name of freedom of expression.

Qualcosa che deve ancora avvenire, ma è già stato detto. Forse. Un punto di vista futuristico sul passato, chiave di lettura di un presente ambiguo e possibilista.

Contaminazioni temporali non esattamente decifrabili dettano un percorso di recupero e rilettura di temi legati al passato, esonerandolo da derive nostalgiche. Alessandro Michele ripete i concetti scandagliati con la collezione uomo, rinvigorendoli di più profondi significati, dando un’interpretazione della realtà in bilico, testimonianze e profezie, uomo e donna, all’insegna della libertà d’espressione.

Materiali a contrasto che creano magnifici effetti materici, un senso del colore tattile, quasi pittorico, che si esprime nelle stampe geometriche, con qualche concessione floreale. Focus sul punto vita, strizzato in alti cinturoni che definiscono silhouette composte, ma dai volumi morbidi e disinvolti, come la palette cromatica, che spazia dalle tinte pi첫 vitaminiche dei gialli, rosa, bluette e rossi, alle nuance sature del fango, cammello e verde militare.

PICCIONE•PICCIONE A creative and emotional journey carried away by nostalgia for the land of origin, where a drawing becomes an iconographical story suggested by a dreamlike imagination with graphics that take up a symbolic value. Intriguing, evocative and dreamy universes are suggested by printings which, as a focus of the young Sicilian designer’s creativity, rotate on four main themes: red and black of the ladybug, the irregular silhouette of poppy flowers, vegetal camouflage and exocitcism of paisley patterns. Knitwear has an important role both for close-fitting dresses and skirts, and coats, macro cardigans and full cloaks. Corolla skirts are rendered in shantung, flowing evening dresses are made from graceful chiffon, precious and iridescent brocade while Swarovski crystals give a touch of light to printings and precious embroideries. Winner of the tenth edition of “Who Is On Next?”, the scouting project conceived and staged by Altaroma in cooperation with Vogue Italia, the brand Piccione•Piccione is appreciated for its ability to interpret a woman with a contemporary attitude and a very personal taste, besides the sound sensitivity to details and research.

Un viaggio creativo ed affettivo sull’onda della nostalgia per la propria terra d’origine, dove il disegno acquista il significato di racconto iconografico suggerito da un immaginario onirico con grafiche che assumono un valore simbolico. Mondi intriganti, evocativi e sognanti sono suggeriti dalle stampe che, al centro della creatività del giovane designer siciliano, ruotano attorno a quattro temi principali: il rosso e nero della coccinella, la silhouette irregolare del papavero, il camouflage vegetale e l’esotismo dei motivi paisley. La maglieria interpreta un ruolo importante sia in abiti e in gonne dalle linee accostate al corpo, che nei capispalla, nei macro cardigan e nelle ampie mantelle. I tessuti sono in shantung per le gonne a corolla, in leggiadro chiffon per fluidi abiti da sera, di prezioso e cangiante broccato mentre cristalli Swarovski donano un tocco di luce a stampe e pregiati ricami. NORISOL FERRARI The designer was born in New York but she is of South-American descent, she has Venezuelan origins. Since she was very young, her free and independent character had the upper hand, and this characteristic will then prove to be essential - as well as her strong personality - to the purposes of success in the fashion system. And the time dedicated to the discovery of the best designers and their dressmaking ability will prove to be determining. On the trail of these artists “know how” Norisol will start travelling across Europe, from Spain to Italy, from England to France to get the opportunity of working with some of the most appreciated talents. Space: indefinitely futurist. Time: an unknown tomorrow. The atmosphere of the science fiction film Solaris directed by Tarkovskij in 1972 upsets any reference, but we are in Milan, at the AutumnWinter 2015/16 fashion week, for the presentation of the new collection by Krizia. The Italian fashion house founded by Mariuccia Mandelli and bought last year by the Shenzhen Marisfrolg Fashion Co. of Chinese designer and entrepreneur Zhu Chongyun, is ready for a new beginning, a dimension in the balance between past and future, between iconic elements of the brand and Asian reinterpretation in a modern way. It is a rebirth that can already be seen from the setting: six fiberglass cocoons represent the metamorphosis that makes Krizia more international, in terms of both style and marketability, while maintaining the unique Made in Italy craftsmanship in the production of textiles, a guarantee of excellent quality renowned worldwide. The new Krizia is essential, has clean lines and refined taste: of the tiger, historical symbol of the brand, only the detail of the eye is retained, a mere suggestion on the jacquard of linear coats, becoming now bird now graffiti panther. What matters most is the essence: the woman is boldly feline, drawing an independently minded femininity, strong, modern and decisive. In a balance between female and male elements, between rounded and square silhouettes, between flattened pleats that become high veils that cover the mouth and puffy sleeves, structured bomber jackets, the first collection by the Eastern owner highlights an intrinsic and timeless dignity and elegance.

La nuova Krizia è essenziale, dalle linee pulite e dal gusto raffinato: della tigre, simbolo storico del brand, conserva solo il dettaglio dell’occhio, una suggestione tratteggiata sul jacquard di cappotti lineari, diventando ora uccello ora graffiti di pantera. Ciò che più conta è l’essenza: è il carattere della donna ad essere arditamente felino, disegnando una femminilità dall’indole indipendente, forte, moderna e decisa. Outstanding results for the third edition of the Düsseldorf tradeshow Si è svolta con ottimi risultati la terza edizione della kermesse di Düsseldorf Clelia Zanni Passionata backstage

As usual, Platform Fashion was held in Düsseldorf and its third edition put Passionata and Thomas Rath fashion shows in the spotlight as well as the group exhibition in which the two labels took part, besides presenting Annette Görtz, Barbara Schwarzer and Milian creations on the catwalk: the event was attended by 1500 guests - buyers and the press. Kollektive K – organizing body since its first edition, consisting of a unified and high-skilled group which shares passion and creativity in the conceiving and the perfect success of important events, meeting the customers’ needs in connection with the fashion system – has expressed great satisfaction for the positive outcomes of the show. Jonas Klingenstein and Benjamin Kuchenbäcker, presidents of Kollektive K, have then commented: “The positive results have spurred us to cast the anchor so that the concept of Platform, energetic and winning, can be recognized at national and international level. As a consequence of the strengthening of Düsseldorf’s economic position, the fashion business has involved an increasing number of brands, season after season: such positive feedbacks greatly satisfy us”. Enthusiastic remarks also by Uwe Kerkmann, manager of the body that promotes Düsseldorf’s economic development. Passionata’s catwalk, sharing the catchword “Pink Thriller” was inspired by Hitchcock classics for a refined and ultra-feminine lingerie. Thomas Rath was inspired by Scotland, its line named “Shades of Scotland” presented on the catwalk accurate pieces made from precious fabrics, instilling the great charm of the Northern areas of the United Kingdom.

Thomas Rath si è ispirato alla Scozia, la sua linea dal titolo “Shades of Scotland” ha portato in passerella capi studiati nei dettagli realizzati con tessuti preziosi, infondendo in essi tutto il fascino del nord del Regno Unito.
