A DIALOGUE WITH...

A “new” name in Paris makes her way among the bigs Maurizio Francesconi Paris Contributing Editor

Paris Fashion Week calendar is a strange thing: during the first four days (the most interesting days) big brands are almost absent but you can find out new talents, young designer of high hopes or just confirm the new names from previous seasons. From Jacquemus to Anrealage, from Cédric Charlier (globally successful) to Yang Li, from Vetements’ Demna Gvasalia to the new Paris’ name (showing in Paris from 2014) for this season: Anne Sofie Madsen. Madsen graduated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and, after an internship at John Galliano, she moved to London to work as junior designer at Alexander McQueen and she settled her own brand in 2011. She was finalist at the last edition of the Woolmark Prize and this season the young Danish designer had the show at the Mona Bismarck Foundation. I hardly think to two more different personalities: Mona Bismarck always clad in creations by Balenciaga (when he retired she cried for weeks) in her wonderful Hotel Particulier on the Seine with pieces of art everywhere and the young Danish who put on the runway a woman that (as she said during our meeting) “should use my creations to listen to an electronic music concert or just have a glass of wine with some friends”. Let’s start from the beginning: I consider Copenhagen the homeland of streetwear along with Berlin, Stockholm, Brooklyn and London; I would add that the above designer is also an illustrator and she personally drew the images printed on her collection; she has a weakness for the arts; she is fascinated by couture workmanship (that she uses in a contemporary way) and finally she’s also modest. Her creations aren’t immediately understandable, you’d rather have one more look at the showroom to really appreciate what is hidden behind these dresses. During the show I was particularly moved by a parka and some more outerwear which are to me the quintessence of the Danish taste which combines streetwear and prêt-à-porter. Then we saw some dresses and shirts with a face (drawn by Madsen herself) printed on them and hard to perceive. Some pleated outfits give an idea of the great knowledge Madsen has, not to mention the ruf-

fles on shirts and some dresses made with shoelaces reminding me Masai garments. These pieces were combined with very rigorous pants showing her technical knowledge because we can’t forget that a good pair of trousers is not easy to make. Last but not least, the more couture pieces reminding me armors, maybe a bit excessive for the ready-to-wear week but showing us the need for research this designer has got and her creativity: a net dress with appliqués recalls the 1960s as Edie Sedgwick. Madsen tells me about her inspiration comes from a picture of the late 1940s with some women dressed for a masked ball. She adds that when she saw this image she found it incredibly modern (even if it’s almost 70 years old) saying that this collection is about a place between a past hard to remember and a future hard to imagine. This collection, she says, also represents the unknown becoming familiar. Then the shoes: a partnership with the Italian brand Farewell, a sort of capsule collection with rocks-inspired soles. The jewels (which I didn’t catch during the show) are really interesting: created with the designer Maria Black and inspired by Margaret de Patta, they’re a homage to the great Mark Rothko made of rigid ticks, typical of the Nordic minimalism.

The collection represents a collage of futuristic and mechanic shapes often useless and dated coming from and unknown past therefore non existent. Madsen’s creative side is (as for all young designers) overflowing and willing to show how unlimited creativity can be. Young people are interesting right for this, because they’re excessive, overmuch and limitless. What they need to show their talent (and Madsen has plenty of it) is removing excesses and frills giving the market a product as creative as this but meeting the needs of market and customers. During her career Madsen experimented in a very “artistic” way being able to excite young people trying to intellectualize fashion and searching for fusion between different fields. Personally I found the simple parkas some of the best I’ve ever seen in my life and I hope this designer will keep working on this kind of creativity in addition to the study of 21st century couture garments.

ANNE SOFIE MADSEN A Parigi un nome (non)nuovo si fa strada tra i grandi Il calendario di Parigi è cosa strana: nei primi quattro giorni (quelli più interessanti e nei quali la stampa italiana è purtroppo poco presente) i grandi brand sono quasi assenti ma si possono scovare nuovi talenti, ragazzi giovani e di belle speranze o confermare i nomi nuovi delle stagioni precedenti. Da Jacquemus a Anrealage, da Cédric Charlier (ormai con un successo globale) a Yang Li, da Demna Gvasalia di Vetements per arrivare al nome “nuovo” di Parigi (in realtà presenta qui dal 2014) di questa stagione: la danese Anne Sofie Madsen. Laureata alla Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, dopo un internato da John Galliano si sposta a Londra per diventare junior designer da Alexander McQueen fino a fondare la sua maison nel 2011; è stata finalista all’ultima edizione del Woolmark Prize e questa stagione la giovane designer ha sfilato alla fondazione Mona Bismarck. Difficile pensare a due personalità più diverse: Mona Bismarck sempre avvolta in creazioni di Balenciaga (quando il maestro andò in pensione si chiuse in casa per settimane a piangere) nel suo meraviglioso Hotel Particulier sulla Senna circondata da opere d’arte e la giovane danese che manda in passerella una donna che, come mi ha detto durante il nostro incontro, “deve poter indossare queste mie creazioni anche per andare ad ascoltare un concerto di musica elettronica o bere un bicchiere di vino con gli amici”. Per rendere tutto più semplice per il lettore, comincio dicendo che ritengo Copenhagen una delle patrie indiscusse dello streetwear insieme a Berlino, Stoccolma, Brooklyn e Londra; aggiungo che la designer in questione è anche illustratrice e che si è occupata personalmente delle immagini che sono stampate sui tessuti della sua collezione, che ha chiaramente un debole per l’arte, che è comunque attratta dalle lavorazioni couture che però reinterpreta in versione contemporanea e che è modesta (cosa che non fa mai male). Le sue sono creazioni difficili da capire nell’immediato, che è meglio rivedere in showroom per poter apprezzare appieno tutto il lavoro nascosto dietro questi abiti. Durante la sfilata sono rimasto particolarmente colpito da un parka e altri capispalla decisamente ben fatti e che rappresentano per me la quintessenza di quel gusto danese che fonde lo streetwear e la voglia di capire e apprezzare la moda con la M maiuscola.

A seguire una serie di abiti e camicie stampati con un viso disegnato dalla stessa Madsen o con porzioni di quell’immagine che già di per sé sembra “sbavata” e che diventa ancora più difficile da cogliere nel caso di un top che mostra solo una porzione di quel viso femminile in un gioco che porta a cogliere il particolare prima ancora dell’insieme. Una serie di uscite in seta plissé con immagini difficili da cogliere danno un’idea delle conoscenze tecniche che la giovane danese ha, per non dimenticare le ruches su

abiti e camicie e gli abiti fatti con una sorta di stringhe per scarpe che mi ricordano (molto da vicino) certi abiti delle donne masai. Questi pezzi sono abbinati a pantaloni molto rigorosi che però dimostrano le sue conoscenze tecniche, perché non dobbiamo dimenticare che un buon paio di pantaloni non è cosa facile da fare. Infine ci sono i pezzi più couture, che ricordano quasi delle armature, un po’ eccessivi per la settimana del prêt-à-porter ma che dimostrano la voglia di ricerca di questa ragazza e la sua inesauribile creatività: un abito di rete con applicazioni ricorda certi abiti anni ’60 e Edie Sedgwick anche se la Madsen mi racconta che l’ispirazione nasce da una foto della fine degli anni ’40 con alcune donne abbigliate per andare ad una festa in maschera. Mi racconta che quando ha visto questa immagine l’ha trovata incredibilmente moderna nel look, nonostante il fatto che abbia quasi settant’anni e aggiunge che la collezione riguarda un luogo tra un passato difficile da ricordare e un futuro difficile da immaginare, ma che rappresenta anche lo sconosciuto che diventa familiare. Poi mi parla delle scarpe presenti in sfilata create in collaborazione con il brand italiano Farewell, una sorta di capsule collection con suole ispirate a sedimenti rocciosi.

Poi mi mostra i bijoux presenti in sfilata che francamente non avevo colto e che ho trovato decisamente interessanti: disegnati in collaborazione con Maria Black e ispirati a Margaret de Patta rappresentano un omaggio al grande Mark Rothko e sono delle “bacchette” rigide quintessenza del minimalismo tipico nordico.

La collezione rappresenta un collage di forme futuristiche e meccaniche ma spesso inutili e datate che vengono da un passato sconosciuto e quindi inesistente. Bene quindi il lato creativo che è, come sempre avviene con i giovani, debordante e voglioso di dimostrare quanto sia inesauribile la creatività nei giovani, che sono interessanti proprio perché eccessivi, sovrabbondanti e privi di limiti. Quello che serve per dimostrare talento (e la ragazza ne ha) è lavorare per sottrazione, togliere gli orpelli e gli eccessi perché abbiamo capito che di talento ne ha e quindi ci aspettiamo che “ripulisca” tutto per darci un prodotto altrettanto creativo ma che incontri meglio il mercato e i bisogni del pubblico. La Madsen ha dimostrato, nel corso della sua carriera, di avere voglia di sperimentare (e la sperimentazione è di casa a Parigi) ma in un modo che si lega fortemente al coté dell’arte e dell’illustrazione che sicuramente può entusiasmare i giovani alla ricerca d’intellettualizzazione e fusione di ambiti diversi anche se (personalmente) ho trovato i più semplici parka tra i migliori che abbia visto da anni e spero che la talentuosa stilista decida di continuare a lavorare su questo fronte oltre che sullo studio del prodotto sartoriale visto in un’ottica del XXI secolo.

Colpisce il rigore, poi, in un lampo, ci si lascia suggestionare dalla precisione delle forme e dei tagli, dalle fisionomie sofisticate e disinvolte. Alla sua quarta collezione, Arthur Arbesser si muove verso un concetto di moda più femminile, senza abbandonare la sua interpretazione dell’uniforme come concetto di base dell’abbigliamento e partendo dall’osservazione dei temi decorativi del ’900, il lavoro di Michael Thonet e Josef Hoffman e la pittura anti-romantica e provocatoria di Hermann Nitsch.

Il risultato è una collezione portabile e innovativa, che conferma il grande talento del designer.

Arthur Arbesser At first we are impressed by the rigorous severity and then, in a flash, we are seduced by the accuracy of the cuts and of the shapes and volumes, by the sophisticatedly casual looks. The fourth Arthur Arbesser collection moves toward a more feminine concept, without abandoning his interpretation of fashion with the uniform as the fundamental basis of apparel. The starting point is the scrutiny of 1900’s decorative themes, the work of Michael Thonet and Josef Hoffman, the provocative anti-romantic paintings by Hermann Nitsch. The result is a wearable innovative collection that confirms the designers’s great talent.

Grete Stern from Germany and Horacio Coppola from Argentina are the focus of ‘From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola’ at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from May 17th to October 4th 2015. In 1927 in Berlin Grete starts to take private lessons from Walter Peterhans, a leading figure in the field of photography at Bauhaus. She learns about “photographic vision”, the various theories to calculate the light intensity, contrasts, the chemistry processes necessary to make the perfect image. The following year she meets Ellen (Rosenberg) Auerbach: they soon open a photographic studio specialised in portraits and advertising images. In the same period Coppola begins his experiments in Argentina becoming part of the blossoming modernist movement. His interest in the new ways of doing photography leads him to join the Bauhaus school of thought. In 1932 he goes to Berlin where he meets Stern: it’s the start of their wonderful story together. Because of the rise of Nazism, they both leave Germany in 1933: Stern goes to London where she takes some iconic images of her exile and is joined by Coppola who crosses Europe with his camera always at hand. After getting married, they leave for Buenos Aires in 1935 and organise an exhibition, the first step for modern photography in Argentina, in the offices of the avant-garde magazine Sur. During the Sixties they become the two most influential photographers in Argentina: Grete documents the socio-cultural problems of the Native American in the Gran Chaco, an extraordinary testimony of how intensely close she is to their situation.

La tedesca Grete Stern e l’argentino Horacio Coppola sono i protagonisti della mostra dal titolo: “From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola” aperta al pubblico dal 17 maggio al 4 ottobre 2015 al Museum of Modern Art di New York. A Berlino nel 1927 Grete comincia a predere lezioni private da Walter Peterhans che diventa presto una figura leader del Bauhaus in campo fotografico. Da lui impara la “visione fotografica”, le varie teorie per calcolare l’intensità della luce, i contrasti, l’alchimia necessaria per rendere un’immagine perfetta. L’anno successivo incontra Ellen (Rosenberg) Auerbach con la quale apre uno studio specializzato in ritratti e immagini pubblicitarie. Nello stesso periodo Coppola dà inizio alle sue sperimentazioni, contribuendo con le sue opere a quella corrente modernista che iniziava il suo ingresso nelle riviste locali. Il suo interesse per i nuovi modi di fare fotografia lo portano a congiungersi alla corrente del Bauhaus. Nel 1932 va a Berlino dove incontra la Stern e comincia così la loro storia.

Nel 1933 con il sorgere del Nazismo entrambi lasciano la Germania, la Stern arriva a Londra dove scatta alcune immagini iconiche del suo esilio. Dopo aver attraversato l’Europa con la macchina fotografica in mano, Coppola la raggiunge a Londra. Divenuti marito e moglie si imbarcano per Buenos Aires nel 1935 dove organizzano una mostra negli uffici della rivista avanguardista Sur, il primo passo per la fotografia moderna in Argentina. Negli anni ‘60 diventano i due fotografi più influenti del Paese, Grete documenta i problemi socio culturali dei nativi americani del Gran Chaco, testimoniando con straordinaria intensità la sua vicinanza alla loro situazione.

Chanel BRASSERIE GABRIELLE The whole Mademoiselle’s universe is gathered into this new collection, which however always carries the signature of the great Karl Lagerfeld. Devotee to the collection and to the Maison, the creative director retakes, reworks, mixes Coco’s heritage, and the timeless tweeds featuring the new season’s colours, flared, almost full skirts, knee-length, chains and pearls, the classical shoes with dark toe (it seems they were created by Gabrielle to make her feet look less flashy, which was not that tiny) and amidst a myriad of proposals, the legendary petite robe noire stands out for its simplicity.

Tutto il mondo di Mademoiselle è raccolto in quest’ultima collezione, che porta sempre e comunque la firma del grande Karl Lagerfeld. Fedele alla linea e alla Maison il direttore creativo riprende, rielabora, mixa l’eredità di Coco, e sono gli intramontabili tweed che riprendono i nuovi colori di stagione, la gonna svasata, quasi a ruota che sfiora il ginocchio, le catene e le perle, le super classiche scarpette dalle punta in colore scuro (pare inventate da Gabrielle per rendere meno vistosamente importante il suo piede non proprio da Cenerentola, anzi) e fra le mille e una proposta spicca per semplicità la mitica petite robe noire.

MADE IN LATVIA New inspirations in town Nuove ispirazioni in città Dina De Fina

Welcome back to Riga. It is a renewed pleasure going to the Baltic capital that welcomed us with a warm Spring sun. This time, our fashion tour included various stop at some of the most representative showcases of the local know-how and innovation. Which is surprisingly considering Latvia’s long tradition in the manufacturing and textile industries especially when it comes to wool, cotton, embroideries. We started at Alberta Iela in the heart of the city’s fashion district. The magnificent decorations on the outside walls of houses and buildings are real works of art. On the ground floor of one of them Jana Ezerina welcomed us to Madam Bonbon, an exclusive boutique and meeting place for those who love and are passioned about footwear by international and local niche brands. The store was the location for the unveiling of the Sin on the Beach collection by Anna Kustikova, a leading Latvian label known for graphics with surreal subjects. Next stop Paviljons, another unmissable fashion destination that creates the eponymous knitwear collections by Eliza Feldmane shown on the Riga Fashion Week catwalks. The concept store with a high level of creativity offers oneoff pieces and handmade limited editions by local designers. After leaving the town centre with its Jugendstil, we rushed to Brīvības Iela where big department stores offer a wide range international luxury brands to fashion shopping addicts. Above all, Podium, opened in 2000, that this year welcomed Riga Fashion Week and where the most renowned Latvian fashion labels like Narciss, Alexandra Westfal, and Natalja Jansone showcased their new collections to press and buyers. This season we witnessed among others the presence of Russian brands like Polina Samarina, Agnew Kuzmickaite from Lithuania and the Italian designer duo of acclaimed brand Quattromani.

Ben ritrovata Riga. È un piacere che si rinnova ritornare nella capitale baltica che ci accoglie con un caldo sole primaverile. Il nostro fashion tour questa volta ha previsto diverse tappe in alcuni degli showroom più rappresentativi per la valorizzazione del know how locale e la ricerca. Non sorprende se pensiamo che la Lettonia ha una storica tradizione nel manifatturiero e nel tessile soprattutto nella lavorazione della lana, del cotone, dei ricami. Iniziamo da Alberta Iela, cuore del fashion district della città. Le magnifiche decorazioni presenti sulle mura delle case sono opere d’arte a cielo aperto. Proprio al piano terra di uno di questi edifici, Jana Ezerina ci apre le porte di Madam Bonbon, boutique raffinata e luogo di ritrovo per amanti fetish di brand di calzature di nicchia, internazionali e nazionali. E’ qui che ci viene presentata la nuova collezione Sin on the Beach di Anna Kustikova, brand di punta lettone conosciuto per le grafiche dai soggetti surreali. Ci spostiamo verso un altro fashion site da non perdere, Paviljons, (da cui il brand omonimo di maglieria di Eliza Feldmane che sfila anche alla Riga Fashion Week) concept store ad alto tasso di creatività, pezzi unici, edizioni limitate e hand made di designers locali. Lasciamo il centro e lo jugendstil per catapultarci in Brīvības Iela, laddove i grandi department store offrono alle shopping addicted una surfata tra i brand di lusso internazionali. Uno su tutti il Podium, aperto nel 2000, accoglie anche quest’anno la Riga Fashion Week dove i nomi più accreditati della moda nazionale come Narciss, Alexandra Westfal, Natalja Jansone, presentano le loro collezioni a stampa e buyers. The calendar of the latest edition of London Fashion Week promised a profusion of not-to-be-missed fashion shows, presentations, anniversary celebrations, shop openings, fashion films, cocktails, parties and a plethora of other social events. As it now become the norm, London Fashion Week delivered on its promise. Especially when it comes to originality, creativity, fashion-forward thinking. I am referring to the ‘drawing class’ lace and tulle dresses by Christopher Kane. To the new ‘hippy chic’ by Burberry Prorsum where Christopher Bailey excelled in a deluxe version of the ‘festival ready’ look.

To the creative tour de force by Mary Katrantzou who embarked into the mighty task of defeating the horrors of Victorian horror vacui and succeeded with a truly original multilayered collection. To the uncompromising avant-garde approach by J.W. Anderson who knows no limits when it comes to experimenting and has no time for nostalgic rehashing of the past.

To the dramatically sculptural shapes by Gareth Pugh who showed again in London to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his label and regaled us with a wonderful fashion show and collection.

To the wonderful use of colours by Roksanda. To the contagious positive energy by Sibling who are able to reinvent iconic classic motifs and transform them into truly contemporary patterns. And to the beautifully understated tailored and sportswear-inspired pieces at Paul Smith, the colourful and intricate patterns at Erdem, the structured fluidity at Thomas Tait, the elegant youthfulness with folkloric references at Peter Pilotto.

After such a great number of shows and presentations I took time to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Pringle Of Scotland at the prestigious Serpentine Gallery and to reflect on how skilfully the Head of Design Massimo Nicosia is combining the incredible heritage of the brand, which invented such classics as the twin-set and the argyle motif, with the latest technologies and a truly contemporary style. Off to the Serpentine Gallery again to view the collaboration with Coach and visionary artist Gary Baseman who treated each and every guest, including yours and truly Londonbased Collaborating Fashion Editor, to a very bizarre and amusing one-to-one ceremony meant to make each person’s darkest dream come into reality.

As usual, London Fashion Week played its role of launch platform for new emerging designers such as the extremely talented Faustine Steinmeitz who works with denim in an innovative haute couture approach. Let’s not forget the Central Saint Martins show with the best of the Master courses graduates and the International Fashion Showcase, the wonderful initia-

tive that brought to London 110 emerging designers, like Julia Männistö who deservedly won the first prize for best collection, from 30 different countries including Colombia, Philippines, Nigeria, Korea, and Georgia. During a tearful and moving memorial, we also said goodbye to Professor Louise Wilson who steered for a great numbers of years the Fashion Master courses at Central Saint Martins championing the likes of Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane and many many others.

We missed Tom Ford’s high octane glamour and magnetic sophisticated style as the Texan designer opted to showcase his latest collection in Los Angeles rather than in London. A stroke of marketing genius as the fashion show was attended by the upper echelons of Hollywood stardom who were in town en masse in preparation for the Oscars. It was also a shame to miss on Richard Nicoll’s latest collection but the young talented Australian-born and London-based designer opted to skip a season in order to concentrate on the creative direction of Jack Wills, one of most recent success stories in British premium casualwear. It was a real pleasure to witness another step in the evolution of Hunter Original, the premium collection by the iconic brand founded in 1856, thanks to the masterful creative direction of Alasdhair Willis, the entrepreneur who happens to be Stella McCartney’s husband. The fashion show with its waterfalls and the collection with its inventive outerwear are as exciting as the brand’s new flagship store in Regent Street.

Championed over the years by J.W. Anderson, the genderless trend is starting to gain momentum as epitomised by the recent introduction by Selfridges of the first unisex shopping concept in the world. Called ‘Agender’, the gender-neutral shopping experience, which allows “to shop and dress without limitations”, is developed through three different floors of the luxury department store in Oxford Street. The project features a unisex line designed exclusively by the designer Faye Toogood as well as pieces by Ann Demeulemeester, Comme des Garçons, Meadham Kirchoff, Gareth Pugh and capsule collections by Bodymap, Nicola Formichetti, Underground. And since we are on the subject of shopping, we must confess that, as no Fashion Week is a proper Fashion Week without at least some window shopping and maybe some retail therapy through carefully selected purchases, it was necessary, if not compulsory, to pay a visit to Mount Street. Because the chicest and most exciting road in the kaleidoscopic shopping map of the British capital recently welcomed the new boutiques by upcoming British designers such Christopher Kane, Roksanda and Erdem.

OF CREATIVITY Una cronaca in diretta, o quasi, dalla London Fashion Week Il calendario dell’ultima edizione della London Fashion Week prometteva una profusione di appuntamenti da non perdere fra sfilate, presentazioni, anniversari, inaugurazioni di negozi, proiezione di cortometraggi, cocktail, feste e una pletora di altri eventi sociali. Come ormai di norma, London Fashion Week ha mantenuto la sua promessa. Soprattutto quando si tratta di originalità e lungimiranza creativa. Faccio riferimento agli abiti in pizzo e tulle ispirati alle lezioni di disegno del corpo umano di Christopher Kane. Al nuovo ‘hippy chic’, all’eccellente versione del look ‘festival ready’ di Burberry Prorsum.

Al tour de force creativo di Mary Katrantzou che imbarcatasi nella straordinaria impresa di debellare gli orrori dell’homo vacui vittoriano è risultata vittoriosa grazie a una collezione originale e con una moltitudine di stratificazioni e interpretazioni. All’approccio intransigentemente d’avanguardia di J.W. Anderson che non conosce limiti quando si tratta di sperimentazione e non ha tempo per rimaneggiamenti nostalgici del passato. Ai capi drammaticamente scultorei di Gareth Pugh che è ritornato sulle passerelle londinesi per celebrare il decimo anniversario della sua label regalandoci una sfilata e una collezione veramente meravigliose. Al meraviglioso uso del colore di Roksanda.

Alla contagiosa e positiva energia creativa di Sibling, sempre in grado di reinventare fantasie classiche e iconiche trasformandole in pattern veramente contemporanei. Ai capi sartoriali splendidamente sobri o ispirati allo sportswear di Paul Smith, alle intricate e colorate fantasie di Erdem, alla fluidità strutturata di Thomas Tait, allo stile giovane e giocoso e ricco di riferimenti folkloristici di Peter Pilotto.

Durante tutte queste sfilate e presentazioni ho dedicato un po’ di tempo all’evento, alla prestigiosa Serpentine Gallery, in occasione del 200esimo anniversario di Pringle of Scotland riflettendo sull’estrema abilità con cui l’Head Designer Massimo Nicosia riesce a unire all’incredibile retaggio del marchio, responsabile dell’invenzione dell’iconico twin-set e del classico motivo a quadri, la tecnologia più innovativa e un look veramente contemporaneo. Sono poi tornato alla Serpentine Gallery per visionare la collaborazione fra Coach e il visionario artista Gary Baseman che ha coinvolto tutti gli ospiti, uno dopo l’altro compreso il vostro Contributing Fashion Editor a Londra, in una bizzarra e divertente cerimonia individuale di propiziazione per la realizzazione dei propri sogni più oscuri.

Come di consueto, la London Fashion Week ha svolto il suo ruolo di piattaforma di lancio per i nuovi designer come, per esempio, la talentuosa Faustine Steinmeitz che lavora il denim con un innovativo approccio haute couture. Segnaliamo

anche la sfilata della Central Saint Martins con i migliori neolaureati dei corsi di Master in moda e la fantastica iniziativa International Fashion Showcase che ha invitato a Londra 110 stilisti emergenti, fra cui Julia Männistö che giustamente si è aggiudicata il primo premio per la migliore collezione, da 30 paesi diversi come Colombia, Filippine, Nigeria, Corea del Sud e Georgia. Durante un commovente evento in memoria di Louise Wilson, abbiamo collettivamente detto addio alle geniale professoressa che per anni ha diretto i corsi master di moda alla Central Saint Martins aiutando e supportando fra gli altri Alexander McQueen e Christopher Kane.

Mi è mancata la sofisticata e magnetica interpretazione della moda di Tom Ford giacché lo stilista texano ha presentato alla vigilia degli Oscar la nuova collezione a Los Angeles piuttosto che a Londra. Un colpo di genio del marketing visto che alla sfilata hanno partecipato i vertici di Hollywood. È stato un peccato anche non poter visionare la nuova collezione di Richard Nicoll: il giovane stilista australiano che vive e lavora a Londra ha deciso di saltare una stagione per concentrarsi sulla direzione creativa di Jack Wills, uno dei brand di premium casualwear più di successo in Gran Bretagna. Ho apprezzato molto l’evoluzione di Hunter Original, l’iconico brand fondato nel 1856, grazie alla magistrale direzione creativa di Alasdhair Willis, imprenditore e marito di Stella McCartney. Il set della sfilata con cascate d’acqua e la collezione ricca di innovativi capi spalla si sono rivelate altrettanto eccitanti come il nuovo negozio bandiera in Regent Street.

J.W. Anderson perora da anni il ‘genderless’ trend, una tendenza che sta ormai prendendo piede come dimostra il recente lancio da parte di Selfridges di ‘Agender’, il primo unisex shopping concept al mondo che permette di “fare shopping e vestirsi senza alcuna limitazione” in tre diversi piani del grande magazzino di lusso in Oxford Street. In vendita una collezione unisex in esclusiva per Selfridges firmata dalla designer Faye Toogood, capi di Ann Demeulemeester, Comme des Garçons, Meadham Kirchoff, Gareth Pugh e capsule collections di Bodymap, Nicola Formichetti, Underground. Sempre sul tema dello shopping, visto che una Fashion Week non è una vera Fashion Week se non si ammirano le vetrine delle boutique più esclusive e se non si fa qualche acquisto mirato, è stato necessario, anzi obbligatorio, andare in Mount Street.

Perché la strada più chic nella caleidoscopica mappa dello shopping londinese ha di recente dato il benvenuto alle boutique di Christopher Kane, Roksanda e Erdem nella limitrofa South Audley Street.

Rochas LET’S FLY AWAY Rochas celebrates its 90th birthday and its creative director Alessandro Dell’Acqua pays homage to the legacy of the house going back to the roots of Marcel Rochas’ work. He did this by working on Monsieur Rochas 1934 collection dedicated to birds. A collection taking off thanks to its retro silhouettes, tailored jackets, belted sheaths, incredible embroideries and black chantilly lace. Monsieur Rochas would be proud of it.

Rochas celebra quest’anno il suo novantesimo compleanno e il suo direttore creativo Alessandro Dell’Acqua rende omaggio all’eredità della maison tornando alle radici del lavoro di Marcel Rochas e alla sua collezione del 1934 dedicata agli uccelli. Una collezione che prende il volo grazie alle silhouette rétro, alle giacche sartoriali, alle cinture alte su abiti bon ton, ai ricami incredibili e al pizzo chantilly nero degli abiti da sera da far girare la testa.

Talbot Runhof LIFE IS GRAND New proportions and new volumes by the designer duo of Johnny Talbot and Adrian Runhof who created garments with intelligent cuts and studied shapes and volumes. As the main source of inspiration is a portrait by Mona von Bismarck wearing a silk duchesse oversize coat by Ceci Beaton, quite fittingly the fashion show took place at her home.

The revolutionary cuts required extensively revolutionary tailoring processes as several garments are made of a single piece of cloth, often without side seams and no armholes for the sleeves. Even the shoulders have no seams.

Nuove proporzioni e nuovi volumi per il duo di stilisti Johnny Talbot e Adrian Runhof che ha realizzato creazioni dai tagli sapienti e dalle forme studiate. Il défilé ha avuto luogo presso la casa di Mona von Bismarck ed è la sua immagine ritratta da Cecil Beaton in un cappotto in duchesse di seta oversize la loro fonte principale di ispirazione. I tagli rivoluzionari hanno richiesto processi sartoriali complessi e approfonditi, molti capi sono fatti da un unico pezzo di stoffa, spesso senza cuciture laterali, addirittura nelle spalle non ci sono cuciture e nemmeno buchi per le maniche.
