FOOTPRINT An exhibition about the marks left by shoes in fashion history at Mode Museum in Antwerp Una mostra sui segni che le scarpe lasciano nella storia della moda al Mode Museum di Anversa Maurizio Francesconi

Shoes are one of the most trivial and the most intriguing objects in fashion. At first glance, they are simple accessory worn to protect the feet but, in reality, they are, and they always been, much more than that. Shoes can be a status symbol, if by Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik or Roger Vivier, a sign of rebellion, if by Vivienne Westwood, or almost works of art, if by Salvatore Ferragamo. They may represent a political statement or be the embodiment of an entire culture.

They can be anything: this is why they are so interesting. The ‘Footprint’ exhibition at Momu museum in Antwerp, takes us on a journey through the history of shoes in fashion. It is a real eye-opener for both shoes aficionados and for those who think that many interpretations of fashion can be read thanks to these accessories. The range on display goes from extreme creations by Iris Van Herpen to examples in bentwood from the nineteenth century and highlights their innovative approach and investigates their cultural impact. Particular attention is given to those designers and shoemakers who used their skills and artistic vision to leave a mark, a footprint as a matter of fact, in the fashion imaginary of their period and beyond.

From the Hollywood glamour of Salvatore Ferragamo, the best according to Marilyn Monroe, to sneakers by Raf Simons, marvellous rebel boots by Vivienne Westwood and, last but not least, some examples by Walter Van Beirendonck. The exhibition makes us realise how these shoes have left an indelible mark in fashion history. On display the MoMu shoe collection donated by the collectors Geert Bruloot and Eddy Michiels Bruloot together with more than 400 pieces from the archives of designers, from other collectors and from museums around the world. Le scarpe sono uno degli oggetti più banali e intriganti nel mondo della moda. A prima vista sono un semplice accessorio indossato per proteggere i piedi, ma nella realtà dei fatti sono molto più di questo ed è sempre stato così. Le scarpe possono essere uno status symbol (Christian Louboutin, Roger Vivier o Manolo Blahnik), un segno di ribellione (Vivienne Westwood) o vere e proprie creazioni che si avvicinano quasi all’arte (Salvatore Ferragamo), possono rappresentare una dichiarazione politica o incarnare un’intera cultura. Le scarpe possono essere qualunque cosa e questo le rende così interessanti. La mostra Footprint del Momu di Anversa ci porta in un viaggio attraverso la storia delle scarpe nella moda e si dimostra una vera rivelazione sia per gli amanti delle scarpe che per tutti coloro che pensano che attraverso questo accessorio passino molte delle letture del sistema moda. Passando dalle creazioni estreme di Iris van Herpen alle calzature di legno curvato del XIX secolo, l’esposizione sottolinea l’approccio innovativo ed estremo di queste creazioni e investiga il loro impatto culturale. Particolare attenzione è data a tutti quegli stilisti e creatori di scarpe che hanno usato le loro abilità e la loro visione artistica fino a lasciare un’impronta (footprint appunto) nell’immaginario della moda del periodo. Ci vengono mostrate l’eleganza hollywoodiana di Salvatore Ferragamo (il migliore secondo Marylin Monroe) come anche le sneaker di Raf Simons o i meravigliosi stivali ribelli di Vivienne Westwood o infine le creazioni di Walter Van Beirendonck e ci fanno capire che queste creazioni hanno lasciato il loro segno indelebile nella storia della moda. La mostra esibisce anche la collezione di scarpe del MoMu donata dai collezionisti Geert Bruloot e Eddy Michiels a cui si aggiungono più di 400 pezzi unici provenienti dagli archivi di stilisti, collezionisti e musei internazionali. Chic October, the autumn edition of the Chic Shanghai trade show, took place for the first time last October (from Tuesday the 13th to Thursday the 15th) at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, which opened to the public last year. Meeting the demands of the European market and of buyers and exhibitors, the twentyfourth edition debuted with a reduced format. On stage in an area of 55,000 square meters the Spring/Summer 2016 collection of 700 brands from 23 countries and areas, covering all fashion segments from womenswear to menswear, childrenswear and accessories. Until now the trade show, the leading fashion fair in Asia and the second largest in the world, took place only once a year. There is a lot of anticipation for the twenty-fifth edition, scheduled from the 16th to the 18th March 2016, as the last edition of Chic March registered 1200 participating brands and a record inflow of 125,000 visitors. A foretold and encouraging success, the result of a forward-looking and solidly oriented towards business approach that has made China one of the leading players of the world economy. The available space will be expanded to ensure an all-round fashion journey, a comprehensive look into the fashion world, a major input for the economy and for international cooperation. The more and more wide-ranging event attracts the attention on one of the most powerful production centres in recent years in the entire world, with the stated aim of creating a stronger link between foreign brands and the Chinese market, nowadays one of the most important textile and clothing manufacturers.

Per la prima volta si è svolta dal 13 al 15 ottobre scorso Chic October, l’edizione autunnale della fiera Chic Shanghai al National Exhibition and Convention Center della città, aperto al pubblico lo scorso anno. La ventiquattresima esposizione, rispondendo alle esigenze del mercato europeo, e a quelle di buyer ed espositori, ha debuttato con un format ridotto rispetto a quello consueto, portando in scena le collezioni spring/summer 2016. Uno spazio di 55.000 metri quadrati ha accolto 700 marchi provenienti da 23 Paesi, presenti tutte le categorie, dalla moda donna, all’abbigliamento uomo, dal kidswear all’accessoristica. Fino ad ora la fiera, la più importante di tutta l’Asia, e la seconda più grande del mondo, ha avuto luogo una sola volta all’anno. Ottime le premesse per la venticinquesima edizione, prevista dal 16 al 18 marzo 2016, in quanto lo scorso Chic March, ha registrato 1200 brand partecipanti e un afflusso record di visitatori: 125.000. Un successo annunciato e auspicabile, frutto di un approccio lungimirante e solidamente orientato al business, che ha fatto della Cina uno dei protagonisti indiscussi dell’economia mondiale. Lo spazio a disposizione verrà ampliato per garantire un fashion journey a tutto tondo, uno sguardo globale sul mondo della moda, un input importante per il sistema economico e la cooperazione internazionale. Una kermesse dal respiro sempre più ampio che catalizza l’attenzione su uno dei poli produttivi più potenti degli ultimi anni a livello mondiale, con il dichiarato intento di creare un forte collegamento tra i brand esteri ed il mercato cinese, uno dei primi produttori odierni in ambito tessile e abbigliamento.

The heart of Preach is a team, that likes challenges and has great passion for what they do. A German-Italian design team that stands for a style of clothing as a way to show the own personality and attitude. Founded in 2012 by Frank Prenntzell and Michael Gerlach, Preach follows a “we do it our way” philosophy. No social constrictions or stereotypes for “free-spirit” people who show a way of being, and not just a way of appearing, by wearing Preach. Clean lines, asymmetric cuts, natural colours define an innovative look that does not follow the trends of the moment but meets the needs of those who do not accept compromises and are determined to achieve their goals. The futuristic design matches a casual look that speaks of adventure and reminds of biker style, essential to face urban challenges with determination. The next Spring/Summer collection shows sports jackets, knitwear, soft trousers alongside leather bomber jackets, silk and jersey tops with leather panels and tight-fitting trousers. For him, the new urban warrior, and her, the brave adventurer, the garments are dyed with dark tones from black to deep rust, with dirty white alongside grey/green. As craftsmanship and innovation build the core of the brand, the treatments of the garments are carefully made by hand, new finishing and dyeing techniques change every season and make them unique. The search for the finest materials is another of Preach strengths. The design research accomplishes original combinations between high-tech mesh materials and neoprene with natural fibres, three-dimensional fabrics, materials with a paper look, sheer panels, feather-light stretch materials. Most of the garments are carefully produced in Italy.
