The fashion designer reinterprets high fashion with impressive sculptural dresses inspired by ancient Rome Lo stilista Serafino Couture rilegge l’alta moda in importanti abiti scultura ispirati all’antica Roma Capitoline beauties, turned out onto paper patterns, translated into dresses. The haute couture collection by Salvatore Serafino is dedicated to the glories of ancient Rome. A young designer from Naples who, in the architectural vistas from the times of Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius in Rome - where his atelier is located - found the inspiration to fashion his clothes. The layered elegance of Trinità dei Monti and the Late-Baroque splendor of the Trevi Fountain, the crepuscular allure of Castel Sant’Angelo and the perspective tableau of Via della Conciliazione. An au courant taste for reinterpreting the classics: “My dresses are deconstructed, without boning or bodices that would constrain and stiffen movement. An aristocratic elegance, that willingly shuns cumbersome crinoline and petticoats, focusing on lightweight materials, since high fashion cannot, must not neglect comfort.” Thus, satin and also embroidered tulle, lace inlays and macramé, silk chiffon and triple organza add volume to his creations, avoiding sharp angles and stiffness. Precious inserts - Swarovski, pearls, and micro sequins channel a play on light. The color palette ranges from red to royal blue, inspired by evening walks along the Tiber, and taupe, gleaning from the mud-color tones of the Ponte Sant’Angelo, followed by the iconic golds of the opulence of the Vatican. The anatomic study was a starting point: handmade embroidery, the pride of Neapolitan craftsmanship, provides a three-dimensional effect to each sculpture dress, and, playing with chiaroscuro effects, as in the marble of the Vittoriano, models the body of the Serafino woman.

Le bellezze capitoline tradotte in abito, trasformate su cartamodello: è dedicata ai fasti dell’antica Roma la collezione haute couture di Salvatore Serafino, giovane stilista napoletano che dagli scorci architettonici dell’urbe di Traiano, Adriano, Marco Aurelio, in cui ha sede il suo atelier, ha preso spunto per realizzare i suoi capi. C’è l’eleganza stratificata di Trinità dei Monti e la tardo-barocca della Fontana di Trevi, l’allure crepuscolare di Castel Sant’Angelo e le scenografie prospettiche di via della Conciliazione. Con un gusto aggiornato per la rilettura del classico: «I miei abiti sono destrutturati, senza stecche o corpetti che vincolerebbero, irrigidendoli, i movimenti. è un’eleganza aristocratica, e fa volentieri a meno di ingombranti crinoline e sottogonne, puntando su materiali leggeri. Perché l’alta moda non può, non deve, fare a meno del comfort». Così il satin di raso e il tulle ricamato, gli intarsi di pizzi e il macramè, lo chiffon di seta e la tripla organza danno volume alle sue creazioni, scongiurando angolature e rigidità. Inserti preziosi, Swarovski, perline e micropaillettes, veicolano i giochi di luce, e la cartella colori spazia dal rosso al blu royal, ispirato alle passeggiate serali sul lungotevere, e dal tortora, declinato dai toni del fango del Ponte di Castello, agli ori iconici dell’opulenza vaticana. Punto di partenza è lo studio anatomico: i ricami fatti a mano, fiore all’occhiello della sartorialità partenopea, garantiscono un effetto di tridimensionalità ad ogni abito-scultura, e, giocando coi chiaroscuri, incidono, come nel marmo del Vittoriano, il corpo della donna Serafino.

Tefaf, the European Fine Art Fair: excellence, skill and elegance in Maastricht Tefaf, the European Fine Art Fair: eccellenza, competenza ed eleganza a Maastricht TEFAF is the art exhibition held in Maastricht, the historic Dutch city famous for its charm. Exhibitors at this international event are divided according to their field of expertise: ancient, modern, and contemporary art, as well as design, photography, and jewelry, all from various countries around the world. The works are reviewed by a panel of experts in 29 different categories, which ensure a very high standard of quality and guarantee for the reputation the event has always had in being one of the best and most popular events among collectors worldwide (400 private jets in the city’s airport are counted during the days the exhibition is held). During the last edition, there were as many as 262 delegates from museums all over the world, including representatives from: the Musées des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim in Venice, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, who arrived to purchase works for the institutions they represent. The great jewelry artist, Wallace Chan, was the first Chinese representative invited to the event, where he presented his famous artistic glass creations and his large-scale titanium sculptures. He recounted the important steps he took that brought him from traditional art to contemporary art and from east to west. Chan founded his gemstone carving business in 1974, at the age of 17 and, in 1987, he invented the Wallace cut, a carving technique that transcends size and which has led him to be dubbed the “Asian prodigy”, carrying him onto international fame. Chan has spent eight years studying and experimenting with titanium. Through this, in 2007, he surprised the press and public with his ethereal creations made from the most bio-compatible metal in existence.

Gli espositori di questo evento internazionale sono suddivisi in base al campo di competenza: arte antica, moderna, contemporanea, design, fotografia e gioielleria e provengono da diversi Paesi. Le opere sono esaminate e divise da un gruppo di esperti in 29 categorie che garantiscono uno standard di qualità elevatissimo garantendo alla manifestazione la nomea di essere una delle migliori e più amate dai collezionisti da tutto il mondo (si registra la presenza di 400 jet privati nell’aeroporto della città durante le giornate in cui si svolge la fiera). Il grande artista di gioielleria Wallace Chan è il primo rappresentante cinese invitato all’evento e presenta le sue creazioni artistiche. Il percorso del gioielliere l’ha portato dall’arte tradizionale a quella contemporanea e dall’Oriente all’Occidente. Chan ha fondato la sua attività di intaglio di pietre preziose nel 1974 all’età di 17 anni e nel 1987 inventa il taglio Wallace, una tecnica di intaglio che trascende le dimensioni, che lo porta ad essere definito “il prodigio asiatico” e gli dona una fama internazionale. Chan per otto anni ha studiato e sperimentato il titanio e nel 2007 ha sorpreso stampa e pubblico con le sue creazioni eteree fatte dal metallo più bio-compatibile.

Colombian emeralds, the most valuable in the world, have a new story to tell Gli smeraldi colombiani, i più preziosi del mondo, hanno una nuova storia da raccontare Traceability of the stones, a philosophy always implemented by Muzo, which was granted exclusive mining rights to the eponymous Colombian mining complex in 2009. The most important emeralds on the planet can be traced to this mine. “The color and clarity of these stones is unique”, confirms Ronald Ringsrud, worldwide expert on emeralds and author of Emeralds, a Passionate Guide (Hardcover), also translated into Russian. These rich mines have been the painful scene of the green war, where smuggling and drug lords held sway: “The image of the emerald has been linked for decades to the idea of violence, war, and drug trafficking”, warns Corentin Quideau, Muzo’s Brand Director, who has previously collaborated with famous brands, such as Cartier and Louis Vuitton. Today, following an unprecedented ethical philosophy, Muzo has created a new supply chain, which begins with the stone extraction stage and reaches distribution, through the use of the latest technologies, while still respecting nature, and above all, its labor force. Each emerald extracted boasts its own identity card with the date, place (various points of excavation are involved), extraction time, shape, and weight of the stone. The Muzo emerald stands out for its unparalleled intense green color and stands among the four precious stones gleaned from legendary mines, such as the Mogok ruby, Kashmir sapphires, and Golconda diamonds, by now depleted. The stones are destined for great jewelers and collectors, and soon Muzo will present its fine jewelry collection with exceptional pieces that will involve the best designers of the moment, from Antoine Sandoz to Solange Azagury-Partridge.

Fashion and fairy tales affinities on show at the Fashion Institute of Technology Al museo del Fashion Institute of Technology si mostrano le connessioni tra moda e favole Let’s be clear: not many of us remember Cinderella’s step-sisters’ names (I myself don’t remember the names given them by Perrault), in any case they certainly don’t demonstrate refined tastes by comparison to their half-sister - who succeeds in being extremely elegant even when wearing old ragged clothes for housework (Monsieur Margiela would be proud). Not to mention her wearing those wonderful slippers made of gold, glass or fur, depending on the version. I must say that when I first saw Margiela’s glass shoes I immediately remembered Disney’s version and when I showed them to my sister she sighed and said: ”They’ve been a dream of mine since childhood”. Well, my sister - together with all those women who still foster a dreaming child within them - can go to the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology and discover their childhood dreams before their very eyes. Whilst Cinderella is a sort of fairy tale Jacqueline Kennedy (both for her marriages and for her style) we can’t forget that also Beauty and the Beast or The wizard of Oz are full of costume descriptions and, since no-one is exempt from being fascinated by fairly tales, over the years dozens of stylists have been inspired by and have inspired the fairy tale world.

Little Red Riding Hood and Comme des Garçons, Manish Arora and Alice in Wonderland, Thierry Mugler and The Mermaid and so on for many more fairy tales. This exhibition demonstrates that everyone (and I mean every single person, even the most austere) is enchanted by fairy tales since they often represent a part of ourselves that we’ve tried to remove as adults but that is always ready to overwhelmingly turn up, even at the most unexpected times, such as when looking at an outfit on show. Indeed, asleep inside every woman there is a little girl that still wants that “princess dress” she dreamt about during childhood. From January 15th to April 16th 2016 at FIT, New York.

Vediamo di essere chiari: in pochi ricordano i nomi delle sorellastre di Cenerentola (io stesso non ricordo i nomi che gli dà Perrault) che peraltro dimostrano scarso gusto rispetto alla loro mezza-parente che riesce ad essere elegante anche in abiti semi-distrutti per le pulizie (Monsieur Margiela ne sarebbe fiero), per non parlare di quando indossa le sue meravigliose pantofole fatte in oro, vetro o pelliccia a seconda della versione.

Ammetto che quando ho visto le scarpe in vetro di Margiela mi sono tornate in mente quelle della Disney e le ho immediatamente sottoposte a mia sorella che, sospirando, ha detto: “è da quando sono bambina che le sogno”. Ebbene, mia sorella e insieme a lei tutte quelle donne nelle quali ancora sonnecchia una parte di quella bambina sospirante, potranno recarsi al Museum del Fashion Institute of Technology e riempirsi gli occhi dei loro sogni infantili. Mentre Cenerentola è una sorta di Jacqueline Kennedy delle fiabe (sia per la carriera matrimoniale che per l’eleganza) non possiamo dimenticare che anche in La Bella e la Bestia o ne Il Mago di Oz ci sono intere descrizioni dei costumi e, siccome nessuno di noi è indenne al fascino delle fiabe, decine di stilisti (nel corso della storia) si sono ispirati o hanno ispirato il mondo delle fiabe. Cappuccetto Rosso e Comme des Garçons, Manish Arora e Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, Thierry Mugler e La Sirenetta e avanti così per molte altre fiabe. Questa mostra è la prova che tutti (e dico tutti, anche i più seri) sono affascinati dalle fiabe, perché spesso rappresentano una parte di noi che con l’età adulta abbiamo tentato di rimuovere ma che è pronta a tornare fuori vigorosamente anche nei momenti più inaspettati, come davanti ad un abito in mostra. Ricordiamo che in ogni donna sonnecchia una bambina che vuole quell’abito “da principessa” che sogna sin dall’infanzia. Dal 15 gennaio al 16 aprile 2016 al FIT di New York.

“Where there is love there is trust”, a magical place to celebrate your wedding “Dove c’è amore c’è fiducia”, un luogo magico per festeggiare il proprio matrimonio Mamhead House, a historic prestigious mansion in the English countryside, surrounded by 166 acres of beautiful Italian gardens designed by the famous landscape architect Lancelot Brown, also known as Capability Brown, is the ideal location for a dream wedding. Located on the west coast of Devon near Exeter, two hours by train from London, it hides in its origins a truly romantic love story. As a matter of fact, Sir Robert Newman had it rebuilt in 1833 for his wife Mary as a wedding gift. The family motto “Ubi fides ibi love”, where there is love there is trust, engraved on the main entrance makes it the ideal place for events such as weddings.

The architectural complex includes a castle, designed by the medieval architecture expert Anthony Salvin built in the same period when the villa was built as a copy of Belsay Castle in Northumberland with a very picturesque look in red sandstone, which was once used as stables and a brewery. The Tudor style manor combines classic architecture with Renaissance influences and all details are designed and built with the highest level craftsmanship. Inside, vaulted ceilings and a melancholic stained glass window by the artist Thomas Willement are reminiscent of the Gothic style while the decor recalls the grace and the elegance of the Georgian period. There are ten different rooms to accommodate the guests, as well as an orangery with a capacity of up to 1,000 people, and 27 luxurious rooms available for guests, among them the Queen’s Room, so called because it was used by Adelaide, the wife of William IV, when the estate was used as a summer residence.

All’interno i soffitti a volta e la maestosa vetrata dell’artista Thomas Willement ricordano lo stile gotico, l’arredamento richiama la grazia e la raffinatezza di quello georgiano. Sono dieci le sale che possono accogliere gli invitati, oltre alla limonaia, per una capienza che arriva fino a 1000 persone, e 27 le lussuose camere disponibili per gli ospiti, tra queste la Queen’s room, così chiamata in quanto vi alloggiava Adelaide, moglie di Guglielmo IV, quando l’“estate” veniva utilizzata come residenza estiva.
