Unveiled at the latest edition of Shanghai Fashion Week, ‘Quirky Aspirational Writer’, the latest collection by Shushu/Tong, is inspired by all those young girls who aspire to be writers.

And who perhaps grow up to be modern day versions of Jane Austen or Chiung Yao or of fictional characters like Margot in ‘The Royal Tenenbaum’ by Wes Anderson or Peggy in the ‘Mad Men’ TV series. Established in 2015 in Shanghai by Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang, Shushu/Tong is a womenswear brand that successfully manages to combine “unabashedly feminine details deflated of primness by a cool relaxed attitude”.

Actually, three ingenious ideas: first a wastepaper bin, then a lamp, and finally a bag. This was the first step toward the launching of 959®, a brand that aims to raise the ethical and aesthetic dilemma of contemporary design. A CAMOUFLAGE LEXICON

THE CULTURE OF CONCEALMENT LA CULTURA DEL MIMETIZZARSI

Yesterday was mimetic. Today is camouflage, which ultimately stands for concealment, as well as camo, the very urban shortened form, which, like any other self-respecting suffix, can be matched with practically anything. Hence, the tropical camo and the desert camo. And let’s also not forget the other type of camouflage like the foliage, the concealing coloration, the disguise, the mimicry and the destructive pattern material, abbreviated to DPM. Because there is, without the shadow of a doubt, a camouflage-mania going on.

To cut a long story short, the camouflage-mania is a trend with a thousand and one names. It started a long time ago and was epitomised on the battlefields by the French Unité de camoufleurs.

But fashion has, it is appropriate to say, totally shattered the association with war and filled those mimetic patterns with new and positive meanings.

After all, more than a sociological interpretation that explains the persistence of the trend in fashion, one must look for an anthropological key.

Yes, because what catches the eye is the assimilation of women’s fashion into men’s fashion, which can be considered as a cornerstone of camouflage.

From the assimilation of a genre to its opposite and its complete neutralisation by blending the two: all in one go and with no way back.

Therefore, the photo shoot of the following pages is to be enjoyed in one go. There are no winners or losers in terms of genre. It is mimicry, it is ambiguity, it is the image that is built and deconstructed in terms of shapes, functions and volumes.

It is a syndrome that is frightened of the straightforward, of the terse, of what it is as it seems. It is a syndrome that starts from low culture and that, season after season, is enriched with new interpretations and appears, more and more often, on catwalks across the world. And it is the one that has been masterfully interpreted by the platoon of the students of the Degree Course in

Fashion Culture and Techniques at the Università di Bologna, who embraced the opportunity of camouflage styling under the supervision of Professor Federica Muzzarelli.

A truly unique opportunity, which witnessed the collaboration among the Università di Bologna, the Bologna-based Fashion Research Italy foundation by Alberto Masotti, who made available the gigantic Renzo Brandone textile archive, and the Archivi di Ricerca Mazzini, whose archive of more than two hundred and fifty thousand items of clothing and accessories tells in details the history of fashion.

The result is under your eyes. A true victory. As we say when fashion equals culture.

Ieri era mimetico. Oggi è camouflage, che in fin dei conti sta per ‘camuffamento’. Di qui l’abbreviato molto urban, ‘camo’. Che, come ogni suffisso che si rispetti, sta con tutto: dal ‘tropical camo’ al ‘desert camo’ il passo è breve. Perché, da qualche stagione a questa parte, impera senza ombra di dubbio la ‘camomania’. Ma c’è anche il ‘foliage’ e il ‘concealing coloration’, il ‘disguise’, il ‘mimicry’ e persino il ‘destructive pattern material’ abbreviato in ‘DPM’. Si tratta insomma di una tendenza che potete chiamare in mille modi e che parte da lontano, dai campi di battaglia, dalla francesce Unité de camoufleurs.

La moda però ha, è il caso di dirlo, detonato completamente la portata bellica e ha riempito quei pattern di nuovi significati, tutti positivi. In fin dei conti, più che una chiave di lettura sociologica che spieghi la persistenza del trend nelle collezioni di moda, bisogna ricercarne una chiave antropologica.

Sì, perché ciò che più balza all’occhio è l’assimilazione della moda femminile al maschile, che del ‘camo’ fa una pietra angolare. Dall’assimilazione di un genere al suo opposto e alla sua completa neutralizzazione per fusione: il tutto in un balzo.

Ma senza ritorno.

pagine che seguono: sul campo del ‘genere’ non ci sono vincitori né vinti. È il mimetismo, è l’ambiguità, è l’immagine che si costruisce, e decostruisce forme, funzioni e volumi. È una sindrome da horror del netto, del terso, di quel che è come sembra. È una sindrome che parte dal basso, e che di stagione in stagione si arricchisce di nuove interpretazioni e sale su, sempre più su, nelle passerelle di mezzo mondo. Ed è quello che ha fatto magistralmente il plotone dei ragazzi del Corso di Laurea in Culture e Tecniche della Moda dell’Università di Bologna che, capitanati dalla professoressa Federica Muzzarelli, hanno colto l’occasione di fare ‘camo styling’.

Un’occasione unica che ha visto l’alleanza dell’Università di Bologna, della fondazione bolognese Fashion Research Italy di Alberto Masotti, che ha messo a disposizione i pattern del suo sterminato fondo tessile Renzo Brandone, e degli Archivi di Ricerca Mazzini che racchiudono, in oltre duecentocinquantamila abiti e accessori, la storia della moda.

Il risultato è sotto i vostri occhi. Una vittoria.
