Brand di ricerca si alternano a proposte dagli accenti artistici in una versione commerciale misurata, rassicurante, ma non ovvia, come le proposte di giovani talenti usciti da scuole prestigiose. Da notare: gli outfit dei buyer e degli espositori sono una passerella di ulteriore fonte di ispirazione, uno street fashion show. In mostra l’autunno-inverno 2018/19 con le sue sorprese. Si rinnova anche per la prossima edizione l’appuntamento con LONDON show ROOMS del British Fashion Council, uno spazio che si presenta al contempo come fiera di settore, showroom e galleria d’arte e mira ad evidenziare marchi di ricerca internazionali di giovani designers. ART GALLERY s/s 2018 A thousand and one contaminations between fashion and art. References to the Fluxus movement. Lettering becomes poetry and invents new frontiers for graphics, while the works of cartoonists become the stars of entire collections that narrate other stories. Inspirations from the world of street art that follow the artists and trace alternative routes, very similar to everyday life, and so showrooms are also transformed. Exhibition spaces or concept stores become art galleries dedicated to the avant-garde.

SURFER OR BIKER? s/s 2018 When sports meets fashion. Urbanely dressed, true from the city, not what you wear for sports. From the gym to your morning run, it’s “sanctified” on the catwalks, in the luxury ambiance of ready-to-wear. New York in the spotlight, of course.

Leggings, born to run, become a must-have, accompanied by a T-shirt that’s a second skin. Quite sexy. A new kind of sportswear in a feminine appeal. Truly loved by all, with its fashionable bralettes. Contemporary. Tech micro-jackets replaced by the now abandoned bomber jacket, which had once again experienced a brief moment of glory.

AN ORGANIC PROCESS OF EVOLUTION Another remarkable collection by Marques’Almeida Stripes in different colours and sizes, cow-print patterns, exotic leathers, intricate baroque patterns. Ankle boots with trapeze-shaped heels and shoulder bags with chain handles with macro links. Metallic quilted handbags and pointed sabots with kitten heels. The Marques’ Almeida Spring/Summer 2018 collection is indeed a wonderful exercise in organic evolution, partly achieved thanks to the successful combination of a great variety of different themes ranging from Nordic minimalism and classic American iconography to Oriental motifs and baroque elements.

Launched in April 2011 by Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida after working respectively at Vivienne Westwood and Preen, the London-based label immediately caught the attention of international buyers and media thanks to a highly original use of denim that resulted in instantly recognisable frayed hem signature denim pieces. Marques’ Almeida is currently sold in the best directional high end retailers across the world.

INTIMATELY YVES An immersive experience in the world of a genius Percorso immersivo nell’universo di un genio “I would like my dresses and my drawings to be studied in a hundred years.” You can almost see Yves Saint Laurent as he expresses this desire, a desire that could not have been denied to this couturier who, more than anyone, made fashion an art. A precursor by definition. The most sublime and revolutionary who has ever appeared on the stage of fashion in the 20th century. October 3rd became an historical date for the world of fashion. The headquarters of the Maison on Avenue Marceau (ed. its original location in 1974) opened its doors to the public, thus consecrating the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris. An honor that establishes the inalienability of what it contains: 35 thousand works, 7 thousand fabrics, 5 thousand silhouettes, 15 thousand accessories, and also: magazines, photos of artists, Polaroid shots, and art, as stated by the Director of the Museum, Aurélie Samuel. Yet, what makes this treasure chest of pure passion unique is what we encounter after having first visited the halls that exhibit pieces of iconic couture, works of art that inspired the designer’s entire life, and unreleased documentaries. The visit finally culminates in the studio of Monsieur Saint Laurent. The essence of the Museum. What we see before our eyes is an intimist environment, rather than a memorial. Aurélie Samuel explains that the objective was to recreate the space as it once was in 2002 (ed. the year the Maison YSL closed its doors), to remember the master and his wishes, where visitors can truly experience the esprit of the artist, the effervescence of his work, where they can comprehend both the history of his collections and the Saint Laurent style, the creative process, and all the sources of inspiration that have built the reputation of this important Maison over the years. This, while a mirror, the main element in the studio, majestically covers an entire wall.Yves never looked directly at his creations. He used the mirror because it “creates the distance needed to appreciate the clothes”. Many of his objects can still be admired on his marble worktop: the walking stick that Yves inherited from Dior, his trademark spectacles, colored pencils, the “saharienne” in hessian, Loulou de la Falaise’s chair where she sat to work on her accessories, rolls of fabrics, thousands of portraits, books, sketches, gems, buttons, colors, pencils and, at the feet of the chair where his white smock rests, the bowl of his faithful bulldog, Moujik. Also in October, another YSL Museum was inaugurated in Marrakesch where, as Pierre Bergé once recounted, “Yves liked to escape to draw from morning till night, in this oasis where the colors of Matisse blended with those of nature”.

E sembra di vederlo Yves Saint Laurent mentre esprime questo desiderio, un desiderio che non poteva essere negato al couturier che più di tutti ha fatto della moda un’arte, anticipatore per definizione, il più sublime e rivoluzionario mai apparso sul palcoscenico della moda del XX secolo. Il 3 ottobre scorso, per il mondo della moda è diventata una data storica: sono state aperte al pubblico le porte dell’headquarter (ndr sede della maison dal 1974) in Av. Marceau consacrandolo Museo; un’onorificenza che stabilisce l’inalienabilità dei documenti in esso contenuto: 35mila opere inventariate, 7mila tessuti, 5mila silhouette, 15mila accessori, inoltre: magazines, foto di artisti, opere d’arte, polaroid, come ci spiega Aurélie Samuel direttrice del Museo.

Ma ciò che rende unico questo scrigno di pura passione lo incontriamo dopo aver visitato i saloni che mostrano capi couture iconici, opere d’arte che lo hanno ispirato per una vita intera, docu-film inediti. Il percorso della visita culmina infine nello studio di Monsieur Saint Laurent, questo è il cuore del Museo. Ciò che si palesa ai nostri occhi è uno spazio intimista, più che un memoriale. Aurélie Samuel ci spiega che l’obiettivo, nel ricordo del Maestro e delle sue volontà era ricreare uno spazio tal qual era nel 2002 (ndr anno in cui la Maison YSL chiude l’attività), dove “le persone possano davvero respirare l’esprit dell’artista, l’effervescenza del lavoro, che comprendano al contempo sia la storia delle collezioni, sia lo stile Saint Laurent, il processo creativo e tutte le fonti di ispirazione che hanno costruito negli anni la reputazione di questa importante Maison”. E poi, solenne, campeggia lo specchio che ricopre un’intera parete, elemento principale del suo studio, Yves non guardava mai direttamente le sue creazioni, amava lo specchio proprio perchè “creava la distanza necessaria per apprezzare un modello”. Il suo piano di lavoro in marmo ospita molti dei suoi oggetti c’è “la canne” il bastone da passeggio che Yves ereditò da Dior, gli occhiali, i colori, la toile della Sahariana, la sedia di Loulou de la Falaise che lavorava agli accessori, rotoli di tessuti, migliaia di ritratti, libri, schizzi, bijoux, bottoni, colori, matite e ai piedi della sedia dove vi è appoggiato il suo camice bianco, la ciotola del suo fedele bulldog Moujik. Un altro Museo YSL è stato aperto anche in Marocco, a Marrakesch, nello stesso mese di ottobre, dove, come raccontava Pierre Bergé: “Yves ama rifugiarsi per disegnare dalla mattina alla sera, un’oasi in cui i colori di Matisse si mescolano a quelli della natura”.

SWAROVSKI. A crystal masterpiece by Serkan Cura Swarovski celebrated the 15th anniversary of its partnership with Victoria’s Secret, as always, with the eagerly awaited iconic fashion show. For the first time this year, this amazing show debuted in Shanghai. Swedish model Elsa Hosk was chosen as the angel to wear the crystal masterpiece created by designer Serkan Cura.

The opulent creation was a glittering explosion of color: red, yellow, gold, and orange, The look was embellished with over 275,000 Swarovski crystals and 183 meters of ribbon and pavé crystals. The wing harness was finished with hand-sewn crystals and jewels, and the wings weighted 6.5 kgs. Over 29 effects were used just for this outfit alone. More than any used in previous years. IRI. Janet Yeung iRi was launched by Janet Yeung, a young designer who grew up in South Korea, Hong Kong and New York where she recently graduated at the Parsons School of Design. The label combines the Made in Italy know-how with Asian design codes characterised by a sporty approach. A wide range of materials, including neoprene and nylon, were used for the pieces of the ‘Playing on Paper’ collection where drawings made by some children were applied on high heels and glossy materials as details in pop colours. The collection was launched on the label website in October 2017.

FEMALE IDENTITY AND FASHION ACCESSORIES, THE SECRET OF AN UNSTOPPABLE SUCCESS

Vic Matié is a brand that I have always appreciated, even loved, for its strong aesthetics, never trivial but always balanced and elegantly harmonious. During the Spring/ Summer 2018 presentation in Milan, I had the pleasure to chat with the longstanding creative director Silvia Curzi. I feel that this is a perfect interview in describing a woman who doesn’t fall into the stereotype trap. Never trivial, a “normal woman” with a strong identity in terms of aesthetics and character.

The Vic Matié Spring/Summer 2018 collection offers many frivolously feminine details like ruches red, bows, crystals and so on. Why did you decide to introduce so many details of this kind, a novelty for a brand with a frill-free DNA? There are always two components in my mind when thinking and “building” each collection. On one hand, I always try to stick to the leitmotif that binds everything we produce, season after season and, of course, to remain faithful to the brand DNA. On the other hand, I have to keep an eye on what’s happening right now, on contemporary aesthetic codes, on the constant evolution of women’s lifestyle.

Clearly, it has been difficult to incorporate elements in the collection that are quite distant from my own aesthetics. But I believe that looking in only one direction will, inevitably, end up weakening the brand. The real challenge is to be able to shape each element according to our own philosophy and do it in such a way that the core characteristics of the brand are not betrayed.

The relationship with femininity does not stop to aesthetics but goes deep into women’s personality.

What are the elements that identify the Vic Matié woman?

I am not very inclined to “draw boundaries” or to identify and categorise women that are to be considered, in a way or another, ideal. Women and contemporary life are too complex to be able to give precise indications. What remains constant in my mind when I think of who chooses, or should choose, a Vic Matié piece is the idea of a woman who loves fashion and wants to express herself through it.

But she also knows how to make alternative choices that are not mainstream fashion because she is able to appreciate the design content and the philosophy of a timeless brand that tells a real, authentic, concrete story.

From where did the new project focused on women as “people” originate? What are its goals?

The project stemmed from a thought of mine that Sabrina Ciofi, who is in charge of brand communication, was able to make happen exactly as I had in mind. I believe that when a person decides to choose a brand they do not only decide to wear a dress or, in our case a pair of shoes, but also to communicate a background of values and a story that evolves over time. I wanted to start sharing the story of our world and of “our” hypothetical women. Women who are special in their own way because of their aesthetic choices, because of their own stories, because of the way they approach life. I also wanted to create a kind of community connected to the brand that would connect all women, even if they are not our customers, who share a specific approach to fashion and a vision of the world of women in general.

How did Silvia Curzi come to create such a strong and unique identity in her chosen profession?

First of all, thank you for the recognition of my effort in keeping as stable and constant as possible the identity of the brand. Remaining faithful to my own vision, which is the same of the brand, and at the same time creating products in the very volatile context of today is perhaps the most difficult thing in my work. This is because unlike other brands, and I want to point this out, behind Vic Matié there is a real company with so many people working in Italy day after day. If I were not to think about this aspect and its implications, it would obviously be easier to stick to my own vision without compromising. The difficult thing is to combine brand DNA and brand values, which cannot be ever forgotten, with the so-called “numbers” and targets that allow the company structure with all its employees to carry on. Besides, this is everyday challenge: it makes us all sleep a little less but it also keeps us alive.

È un brand che ho sempre apprezzato, anzi amato, per le sue estetiche decise, mai banali, ma sempre bilanciate e rispettose di un’armonia elegante. Durante la presentazione della collezione s/s 2018, a Milano, ho avuto la fortuna di scambiare due parole con Silvia Curzi, storico Direttore Artistico del brand. Mi accorgo che i contenuti sono perfetti per un’intervista che racconta di una donna diversa dagli stereotipi: non comune, una ‘donna normale’, con la sua identità forte non solo nell’estetica, ma anche nel carattere.

La s/s 2018 di Vic Matié propone molti dettagli dal sapore femminile nella sua accezione più frivola, come ruche, fiocchi, cristalli, ecc. Qual è stato lo stimolo per introdurre tanti dettagli mai apparsi prima in una collezione che per ‘DNA’ è scevra da orpelli?

In realtà ci sono sempre due componenti che tengo a mente nella creazione e nella “costruzione“ di ogni collezione: da un lato cerco di mantenere il filo rosso che lega i prodotti del brand, stagione dopo stagione e, ovviamente, di restare fedele al DNA del brand; dall’altro non posso non avere un occhio attento alla contemporaneità, al gusto estetico e allo stile di vita delle donne che è in continua evoluzione. Chiaramente è stato difficile dover inglobare nella collezione elementi anche abbastanza distanti dalla mia estetica, ma credo che guardare in una sola direzione finisca, inevitabilmente, per impoverire. La vera sfida è saper plasmare ogni elemento secondo la propria filosofia e farlo proprio in qualche modo, senza tradire mai il carattere più profondo del marchio.

Il rapporto con la femminilità nelle collezioni non si ferma all’estetica, ma scava nella personalità della donna. Qual è l’elemento che identifica la donna Vic Matié?

Io non sono molto propensa a “mettere paletti” o a categorizzare figure di donna in qualche modo ideali. La personalità femminile e la vita contemporanea sono davvero troppo complesse per dare definizioni precise. Quello che rimane però sempre costante nella mia mente, quando penso a chi sceglie o dovrebbe scegliere un oggetto Vic Matié, è l’idea di una donna che ama certamente la moda e desidera esprimersi anche attraverso essa, ma che sa fare anche scelte alternative che non appartengono per forza al mainstream del fashion system, perché sa riconoscere ed apprezzare un contenuto di design e una filosofia di brand che va al di là del momento e racconta qualcosa di autentico e concreto.

Il nuovo progetto dedicato alle donne, ‘persone’ e non solo ‘forma’, da cosa è scaturito e quale obiettivo si pone?

Il progetto è scaturito da un mio pensiero che Sabrina Ciofi, la figura che cura la comunicazione del marchio, ha saputo realizzare esattamente come io lo avevo in mente. Credo che quando una persona decide di scegliere un brand non si porti a casa solo un abito o, nel nostro caso, un paio di scarpe, ma anche un background di valori e un racconto che si evolve nel tempo. Io desideravo iniziare a raccontare, il nostro mondo e le “nostre” ipotetiche donne: ognuna speciale a modo suo, per la propria estetica, per la propria storia e per il proprio approccio alla vita. Inoltre, avevo il desiderio di creare una sorta di comunità attorno al brand, che accomunasse tutte le donne (clienti e non) che condividono una certa visione della moda e dell’universo femminile in generale.

Silvia Curzi, com’è arrivata a creare la sua forte e unica identità professionale?

Intanto, grazie per il riconoscimento dello sforzo fatto per tenere, appunto, più salda possibile l’identità del brand.

Cercare di rimanere fedele alle proprie visioni, che sono poi quelle del marchio e, allo stesso tempo, realizzare un prodotto che sia fruibile in un contesto contemporaneo molto volatile, è forse la cosa più difficile del mio lavoro.

Questo anche perché, a differenza di altri brand, dietro Vic Matié (e ci tengo a sottolinearlo) c’è un’azienda reale, con tante persone che lavorano ogni giorno in Italia. Se non dovessi pensare a tutto questo sarebbe più semplice tenere fede al mio pensiero, senza compromessi. Il difficile sta nel coniugare il DNA e i valori che un brand non deve mai abbandonare con i cosiddetti “numeri” da portare a casa per tenere in piedi la struttura industriale, con tutte le persone che ne fanno parte. Del resto questa è la sfida di ogni giorno, che toglie un po’ di sonno, ma tiene sempre vivi.
