The Future of Canada’s Leadership Position Consolidation will play out overseas as well By Mike Davey

here’s a paradox inherent in trying to predict the future. This paradox arises when we consider that actually predicting the future is both very easy and literally impossible. Take a look at just about any broad social trend, consider where it’s headed, and your predictions will essentially write themselves. That’s the easy part. What makes it literally impossible is the existence of many millions of human beings, all of whom have individual agency. We can predict their aggregate behaviour with some degree of accuracy, but not what they’ll do as individuals. It’s tempting to look at the collision repair industry and the broader auto claims economy and predict increased consolidation across all sectors. There’s a few reasons to think this is a

safe bet. First, today’s collision repair industry is still very fragmented compared to many other industries. An independent hardware store, for example, is a rare sight these days. This is not at all the case for bodyshops. We’ve seen explosive growth for the banners and networks over the last 10 years, but they still comprise a very small piece of the pie in terms of total shop numbers. Canada’s largest consolidators are the Boyd Group, CARSTAR, Fix Auto and CSN Collision Centres / Carrossier ProColor. Those are the biggest organizations operating in the country, but the total number of shops operating under those banners is only slightly over 890. Shop numbers across the country have declined enormously over the last 10 years.

What was once a landscape of over 10,000 collision repair facilities has shrunk to the levels we’re seeing today, somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 bodyshops across Canada. Take away the 890 shops under the national banners, and we’re left with somewhere between 3,120 and 4,120. Not all of those shops are independents. The regional banners and chains, such as Assured Automotive in Ontario (recently purchased by Boyd), Craftsman Collision in British Columbia and Alberta and Speedy Collision, Herbers and Birchwood account for some of those numbers. We’ve also seen some newer players come onto the national stage, such as CarrXpert, further lessening the number of independent facilities. The majority of shops remain Buyer’s Guide 2017 9

independent, but the number seems to shrink every year. There are numerous reasons for this. There has been significant business pressure to create large repair organizations to ease the claims process. It’s fairly obvious that most insurance executives would rather make one phone call than 200 phone calls. There are other advantages to be gained from larger organizations, such as the oft-heard “economies of scale.” This applies to everything from training to equipment and consumables. We shouldn’t b e surprised if we find that a paint company is willing to give a break on price if they’re guaranteed to sell product into 200-plus shops across Canada. Another reason is the entrance of private equity into the collision repair space. Jeff Sanford of Collision Repair magazine has been tracking this for the last two years. A business reporter of more than 20 years experience, Sanford believes that private equity funds simply overlooked the collision repair business for a long time. Their interest has become more focused in recent years. “Over the past couple of years, some of the biggest financiers on Bay Street and Wall Street—including the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System and Carl Icahn—have jumped into the race to create national and even international collision repair brands. We’ve even seen Warren Buffett get involved. His Berkshire Hathaway bought up the Van Tuyl Group in 2014, the largest privately owned auto dealer in the US. some of its dealerships and it wouldn’t be difficult for them to increase their footprint,” he says. “Just as the Home Hardware and Ace Hardware brands rolled up all the independent stores in the ’80s and ’90s, the big money is betting it can do the same thing with collision repair. Tying autonomous shops into a corporate structure is a great way to make a big return on investment. Interest rates are low, which makes financing cheap.” There’s also the question of dollar volume. This may be a better indication of which way the business is headed as opposed to shop numbers. Vincent Romans is the Principal of the Romans Group, a consultancy that studies and reports on the North American collision repair industry. Romans estimates the private automotive insurance repair market in Canada at about $2.9 billion a year. Note the use of the word “private.” Business done through public insurers are not included in that total, so it leaves out most of the work done in BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. However, just looking at the private insurance markets, Romans’ research shows that the banners and franchises have a significant presence in terms of dollars. “The Canadian market continues to consolidate with the franchise and banner segment, representing a significant 52 percent share,” he says. Those are just the national banners. The regional networks and larger multi-store operators (MSOs) account for a huge part of the rest of the market. “When including the Canadian MSOs bringing in more than $10 million a year, the combined larger segment has a significant 71.8 per-

cent of all the private passenger insurer and consumer-paid market.” In other words, the networks and large MSOs are punching far above their weight, judging by the percentage of the business they control. Brad Mewes is an independent consultant studying the collision industry and a specialist in mergers and acquisitions. His predictions for 2017 may seem somewhat radical: nothing will change. “Last year I made three predictions for 2016. Consolidation would continue. Technology will continue to impact the industry. Interest rates will rise,” he says. “My predictions for 2017? Consolidation would continue. Technology will create winners and losers. Interest rates will rise.” There is likely to be more consolidation to come in the collision repair business, but the consolidation story is also playing out throughout the larger auto claims economy. We’ve seen significant consolidation on the supplier side in the last year alone. Uni-Select in particular has been on something of an acquisition spree of late, buying up independent stores and smaller chains throughout Canada and the US. The company now operates well over 250 locations and 14 warehouse distributors throughout North America. Other smaller acquisitions were also announced in Canada and the US. Only time will tell if these companies continue to grow through acquisition. The paint companies are major suppliers to the collision industry. Again, we’ve seen consolidation play out here as well. The consolidation story with the paint companies

is a bit different. The parts of the companies that we see and interact with are in fact just parts of much larger organizations. Without exception, they’re all sprawling multi-nationals with interests in many diverse areas far removed from automotive refinish. In the automotive claims economy, only the largest insurers rank alongside the paint companies for global reach and business volume. Just recently, AkzoNobel has rebuffed several multi-billion dollar offers from PPG. Sherwin-Williams has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Valspar for about $11.3 billion. Regulators insisted on some divesture to allow this to take place, and Valspar’s wood coatings unit is being sold to Axalta. This is a major factor in why we haven’t seen more consolidation in the paint sphere in recent years. The companies are already so large that buying one is complicated, extremely expensive and will almost certainly cause government regulators to examine the deal with great scrutiny. Nevertheless, as shown by the Sherwin-Williams and Valspar deal, consolidation is proceeding here as well. We’ve discussed the Canadian landscape, but any analysis of the current situation has to take into account that it’s a smaller world

than ever. The big insurers and suppliers are all multi-nationals, but it’s only recently that we’ve seen this trend start to seriously impact the collision repairers. CARSTAR is now officially a North American organization, rather than two separate companies with the same name. Boyd/Gerber has long operated

to change a few years ago under Steve Leal. His organization more or less absorbed the others and went on a vigorous international expansion drive. Today, we’re looking at Fix Auto World, a multi-national company with operations in Canada, the US, the UK, Turkey, France, Australia and China.

However, the real international success story has to be Fix Auto. Fix Auto was founded in Quebec and quickly expanded into other parts of the country. A number of master franchises were then set up in other countries, such as the US. However, the company was itself somewhat fragmented even within Canada, with different operations in Ontario, the Atlantic provinces and the West. That started

We can likely expect other operators to follow suit. Canada’s collision industry may be reaching its maximum consolidation level, but this story has not played out the same way around the globe. It would be somewhat surprising if Canada’s largest operators didn’t follow Fix Auto’s lead, and start eyeing other countries that could benefit from proven Canadian expertise in consolidating the collision business.

The latest and greatest in tools, from big and powerful to small but mighty By Jeff Sanford

he digital revolution continues to play out on the shop floor. Techs no longer simply pull metal, but work on vehicles that are essentially rolling computers. Along with new tools for aluminum repair there are many new digital tools on the market. The high-tech, futuristic sheen that defines this year’s crop of cool new tools is a reflection of the evolving sophistication of the industry. There is a lot to get excited about this year. Among them are the three winners of the New Products Showcase Awards show at the SEMA Show. Buyer’s Guide 2017 13

Remote Assisted Programing Kit Taking first place in the Collision Repair & Refinish category at the SEMA Show was a new tool that is a perfect example of the ongoing trend toward the digitization of collision repair. The winner this year is the Remote Assisted Programming (RAP) kit from Drew Technologies. The device allows any shop to reflash a vehicle’s J2534 controllers. Reflashing, of course, is the process of replacing existing software in a vehicle controller with new software by electronically transferring calibration files from the website of an OEM. This process is achieved through the use of a standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers known as J2534. The RAP kit (including a Windows PC, J2534 device, modem, OEM subscriptions and battery maintainer) allows techs to simply plug in the kit, call the company’s toll-free number and flash the car to update the system.

Dust Extraction System Pro Spot introduced a new dust extraction system that can help avoid issues around aluminum dust explosions. The device does not run on electricity. It’s fully pneumatic, which mean it’s unbelievably light. There are two different hoses for dealing with steel or aluminum. The hose for steel is not conductive while the hose for aluminum dust is, which allows it to be grounded. The unit can be wall mounted or installed as per workshop requirements.

SATA Jet 1500 SoLV gun Paint gun manufacturer SATA continues to evolve its SATAjet 1500 SoLV gun. Designed for low VOC basecoats, the latest iteration of this stalwart bit of kit provides an even and wide spray pattern at an affordable price. The device efficiently transfers paint and maintains the wetting required for today’s Low VOC solvent basecoats. Air pressure ranges from 14 to 35 psi. There are two nozzle sizes as well as two different colours (blue or black).

Magnetic Utility Gloves MagnoGrip’s Pro Impact Magnetic Utility Gloves were created to solve a challenge that has only come up in the last few years: protecting your hands while still using a touchscreen. These gloves provide impact protection to the knuckles and fingers, while powerful magnets on the back allow users to store nuts and bolts for easy access. Special touch screen fingertips allow you to use smart phones and tables without ever removing the glove.

Setting Saver An Arkansas-based company known as the Whistler Group offers a couple of neat little products. First, there’s the Setting Saver, a set of OBD II cables that saves all the pre-sets in a car before the battery is disconnected. Considering how many pre-sets there are in cars today (from seat positions to radio stations) this is a smart idea.

Quick Check A product from Bonding Solutions, the Like90 Quick Check Temporary Gloss Simulator, took a runner-up position at the SEMA Show. This is a sprayable product that simulates the depth and clarity of fresh clear on base. Using it eliminates the need to spray expensive clear coat on spray out cards. Quick Check can be sprayed to match colours as they would appear under clear. It dissipates completely so another colour coat can be applied if the first try does not match. Quick Check can also be used to check repaired panels for defects, as it stays wet long enough to evaluate the straightness of repaired panels.

Universal Dolly Beyond the award winners many other impressive new products were released this year, among them the Universal Dolly System from DJS Fabrications. This compact but effective dolly system “works for every situation,” and gives the tech great control in moving any vehicle safely and efficiently across a shop floor. Chip Foose is said to have been the first to have a set of four.

TOUCH Virtual Spanesi Americas’ TOUCH Virtual utilizes a pair of glasses similar to Google glasses to put everything techs need front and centre in their vision, without the need to turn to a PC or mobile device. The system is controlled with a touch pad and allows technicians to call up any information they need. TOUCH Virtual also records video and photography of the work being performed, allowing the collision repair facility to fully document the repair process. A technician using the system can call up repair procedures, use Spanesi’s TOUCH measuring system, go to I-CAR, access estimating resources and document the repair order at the same time.

T-Hotbox Rounding out the top three SEMA winners is a new product from Betag Innovation, the Aluminum T-Hotbox. This is a programmable paintless dent repair device. As aluminum is used in more vehicles, tools that can facilitate a successful repair on this metal are becoming key bits of kit in a tech’s tool box. This past year the team from Betag Innovation demonstrated this product at various locations across Canada. The T-Hotbox has several settings that can be adjusted or pre-set to avoid burning the paint during dent removal.

JTAPE Masking Discs JTAPE Parking Sensor Masking Discs are specifically designed to mask parking sensors without the need for removal. The adhesive cover protects the sensor throughout the repair process, preventing damage from sanding, painting and polishing. According to the company, this saves time and also reduces the risk of problems or malfunctions with the sensors afterwards. JTAPE products are available in Canada exclusively through Dominion Sure Seal.

MiG Buddy The MiG Buddy is a great little inexpensive gadget that can make a tech’s life easier. It’s a holder for a MiG welder that attaches to a cart, bench or table. It’s also available with a magnetic mount that allows it be moved. Techs can put the welder into the holder to free up their hands, while keeping the welder in easy reach. Lines don’t get tangled up and safety is improved.

The Tape Thing A company called Collision Edge introduced a couple of neat and inexpensive devices this year. The Tape Thing is a fun device that uses velcro and magnets to give paint tape a place to sit, say, on a hip, a car, or near a work station. No more lost rolls of tape due to a fall on a wet floor! There’s even a place to store a razor blade, cutting down on the loss of those through floor grates.

NitroHeat NitroHeat converts compressed air to 98 percent nitrogen, ideal for use in waterborne paint applications. Nitrogen is effectively moisture free, so application is more consistent with heated nitrogen as opposed to compressed air. The company says this uses less material while providing better coverage. NitroHeat supplies a constant flow of nitrogen through a heated hose to maintain a spray temperature of over 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dent Viewer XL Collision Edge also introduced the Dent Viewer XL this year. The tool is a dent viewing board that can be used to create pictures to send to the insurance company for an estimate. Collision Edge previously introduced a smaller version. The XL is a much larger, free-standing board that can help techs get pictures and estimates out faster.

PR-5 Riveter Pro Spot continues to step up and offer the tools necessary to work on aluminum. The company has already introduced the PR-5 selfpiercing rivet (SPR) gun. New this year is an adapter for the PR-5 that allows techs to use the device to apply blind rivets, which are required on some aluminum jobs. Just affix the device to the PR-5 and you’re set—blind rivets are a go.

Neutralizer AC Also new this year is an anti-static blow-off gun, the Neutralizer AC. As any good painter knows static electricity can occur on bumper covers during painting. Not only will a static charge attract dust but it can orient the metallic flakes in paints, leading to flaws. The Neutralizer AC gets rid of that static charge, ensuring that the metallic orientation is correct—as metallic flake is produced in ever finer grains avoiding static charge issues is become a greater concern.

MDT 10 Another new product in the diagnostic space comes from Mac Tools. The company has launched a diagnostic scanner it calls the MDT 10. The device is built into an Android tablet. It features coverage for more than 25,000 vehicle systems and diagnoses drivability issues on virtually any vehicle. An optically-bonded screen, a rear camera with flash, front camera, dual speakers and HDMI output to an external monitor are some of the features. The device also provides on-tool resource information, scan and scope troubleshooting repair info and specific tech tips as well as embedded training videos. Chip Foose is said to be a fan of the MDT 10.

I-CAR A new “product” can also be found through the I-CAR Technical Reparability Support at rts.i-car.com. The trendiest topic this year involves diagnostic scanning, pre- and post-repair. A new section on the site allows collision repair experts to search OEM calibration requirements related to automatic braking and lane-assist systems. The section provides the need-to-know information for recalibrating the many new cameras and sensors on modern vehicles. This is a key new product for the future of repair.

Matrix Wand Another new bit of high tech magic is a software solution to be used with the Matrix Wand that determines the geography of a surface from photography. Until now the Matrix Wand has been used as a blueprinting tool. But the new add-on, Matrix Active Map 3-D Technology, allows the Matrix Wand to, “fully integrate into the repair process.” The Matrix Active Map 3-D Technology uses a database of 18,000 vehicles to allow a technician repairing or replacing a structural component to sample multiple locations as a way of identifying the proper location of the part with, “confidence and accuracy.” According to the manufacturer the new capability allows The Matrix Wand to make the “leap from being considered primarily a blueprinting tool to a fully-fledged 3-D repair system.”

Spectre Scanner Advanced Measurement Systems has introduced the Spectre Laser Measurement System. According to the company, it’s the world’s first wireless, cable-free laser measurement system and it’s powered by the industry’s smallest scanner. It’s definitely a niftylooking piece of tech.

Cubitron II Cut Off Wheel and Flap Disc Another new product from 3M is the Cubitron II Cut Off Wheel and Flap Disc. According to 3M, the tools are optimized for the bodyshop as they are not “over-engineered for heavy duty industrial applications.” The new tools offer a composite body providing durability at a lighter weight and better user comfort and handling. The tool is also less prone to condensation. According to 3M the device cuts 30 percent faster and lasts up to twice as long as conventional discs.

Maxi-Miser 3000 Apollo Sprayers International recently unveiled the Maxi-Miser 3000, a new paint system for high-production collision repair facilities. The device is distributed in Canada by Innovative Refinish Sales and Solutions. Known as a turbine high-volume low pressure (HVLP) spray system, the Maxi-Miser 3000 consists of its own turbine air generator, hose and spray guns. According to the manufacturer the system lowers paint costs, reduces filter and compressor maintenance, reduces dirt imperfections, environmental impacts and provides greater painter comfort. It is claimed this has resulted in a reduction in paint usage of up to 40 percent. That makes the Maxi-Miser a really cool tool.

Total Automotive Sanding System 3M announced a strategic collaboration with the makers of Festool brand products in February of 2016. The result of the collab is a new and comprehensive surface preparation and finishing system, the 3M Total Automotive Sanding System. Designed and equipped for body repair, paint prep and paint finishing, the system officially launched in Canada on August 1, 2016. According to 3M, “This system is a great example of the shop of the future—with mobile workcentres, a focus on dust extraction and the ability to deliver an excellent repair—more productively, efficiently and cleaner than before.” This is all about reducing particle contamination in the shop.

It uses 3M’s Trizact technology. The kit is intended to restore two headlight lenses. This might make a good value-add for a repair, or something you could sell to consumers at the counter. Brilliant Solutions LED curtains A really neat new product that can improve welding safety are the LED fitted curtains from Car-O-Liner. Under the brand name Brilliant Solutions, the curtains can be used to protect technicians, create work bays or an aluminum room. Best of all, the curtains feature four LED “light ropes” positioned horizontally and providing floor to ceiling lighting along the side of a vehicle. According to the manufacturer the curtains create, “not only a safe environment for your guests but also give a professional image.” Clearly defined work areas can be demarcated. The shop takes on the appearance of a brightly light, well-ordered space, giving clients confidence, while improving safety.

Pure-10 Regenerative Dryers Also on the list this year are a new line of air dryers from Tsunami Compressed Air Solutions. According to a statement from the company the Pure-10 Regenerative Dryers offer similar high performance results as the standard Ultra Dryers, but at a reduced cost. The Pure-10 line offers low relative humidity (down to .01 percent RH) and a low cost of maintenance. According to Tsunami, maintenance on one Pure-10 unit is under $100 a year on average.

Autodip Plus Autodip Plus from Autodip puts the technology to apply stylish and trendy vehicle wraps right into your painter’s hand. According to the company, a trained painter can use the technology to spray wrap complete cars, wheels and accessories. The original product, Autodip, was developed after two years of research and development and premiered at the 2014 SEMA Show. Autodip Plus is the advanced version and should be available later this year.

6146 Bumper Pliers Kit Last but not least, Polyvance has released the new 6146 Bumper Pliers Kit. The kits make it easy for technicians to repair the rectangular “slot tab” features often found on bumper covers. The technician connects the asTech device to the vehicle, puts the key in the car, turns the ignition on and connects a battery support to keep the car battery from running down during the scan. The MIG Welder is more than just a simple welder according to Snap-on. It is a versatile, high-performing machine that can be used for a multitude of applications that could lead to higher profits and happier customers, the company says. The welder has been purposed for such MIG applications as shock mount and strut tower repair or replacement, vehicle structure repair, panel repair and replacement, frame repair and truck bed and tailgate repair. The MIG Welder also offers the ability to add a SpoolGun for aluminum welding or TIG Accessory Pack for ferrous metals. Among the many SpoolGun applications include truck body repair and body and fender panel repair or replacement, while TIG applications include exhaust welding and body and fender panel customization.

Spanesi’s Q5 is a 3-torch synergic inverter MIG/MAG welder that provides the ability to weld steel, silicon bronze and aluminum, all in one machine. Spanesi says the Q5 is on the approved equipment list for a number of OEM programs. It’s possible to install a coil of different material for each of the three torches. The machine can automatically recognize which torch is being used and select the correct preset welding parameters. The technican can also manually adjust parameters to regulate the thickness of the material to weld the welding arc. The welder comes with 18 synergic and manual programs. The trolley has storage space for two gas cylinders and extra space for tools or spare parts.

B oth welders can be used on steel, highstrength steel and ultra highstrength steel, and both units offer “Smart Plus mode,” which senses metal type and thickness without operator input. Both feature a water cooled transformer and arms, a 20 ft. lightweight cable, powder coated cabinet and a 360-degree swivel gun with gun balancer, although the balancer on the 3664P is classified as “heavy-duty”. hen Arman Gurarslan, President of Arslan Automotive Canada completed university in 1970, he already knew he wanted a business of his own. He became a Snap-On tool distributor in Ottawa for six years. Even in the early days of running a business, Gurarslan had a solid grasp on what he believes the formula of success to be: “keep your word, and service your customers to death.” After a journey of a lot of learning and a bit of luck, Arslan Automotive Canada was founded in the 1980s, and is still flourishing today. In 1981, the company started manufacturing bodyshop items, such as pressure sandblasters and sandblast cabinets. In 1982, Strain-Tec Mfg. was established for the production of paint strainers. “Within two years of introducing Strain-Tec Mfg.,” stated Gurarslan, “we captured not only the major share of the Canadian market but expanded the business internationally to 37+ countries.” Today, Arslan continues to supply many global manufacturers, country specific importers and under private labels. In 1984, Arslan bought S.D. Paint Engineering, an industrial distributor representing Simco Turbine spray equipment of France. The company introduced it to Canada, adding new customers in the industrial sector to its customer base and new technology in turbine based spray equipment. Arslan has continued to introduce several new items as firsts to the PBE segment in Canada, including Plastic masking and Vacuum sanding. Arslan Automotive is also an exclusive importer and national

he TED Group stands for “The Experienced Distributor.” It’s a fitting name. The TED Group consists of Rondex, Canada Car Color and ABS Warehouse. The story behind the company really started when Ted Greenwood founded Rondex in 1972 with the assistance of his sons, Ron and Dexter. A lot has changed, but not the core mission. “Their strategy was to change the bodyshop industry by offering quality products and superior service,” says Bret Greenwood, co-owner of Rondex and grandson of the founder. “They were successful because they chose, from the beginning, to partner with the very best. That’s still how we do business today.” Headquartered in Winnipeg, the company has expanded enormously since Ted first opened the doors. The company now has locations in Winnipeg, Nanaimo, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton and Toronto. Another of Ted’s grandsons, Everett, is also a co-owner of Rondex and supervises operations. He notes that the company is always looking ahead, a tradition started by his grandfather. “We were the first to do many things, such as computerizing our systems, offering in-house repair on air tools and compressors and holding trade shows and product information sessions,” he says. “They were really pioneers. They took the bodyshop supply business out of the back lane and on to the front street. They took pride in the

work they did, and what they could help their customers achieve.” The company still has this “front street” attitude, hosting the Sunday Night Cruise every week throughout the summer. Every week has a different theme. Whether your passion is for the fabulous ‘50s or modern-day tuners, there’s at least one Sunday Night Cruise that’s just right for you. Talk to a few of the company’s customers and you’ll notice one phrase coming up over and over again: “second to none.” “Over the past several years the level of service we have received from Rondex is second to none,” says Jason Cross, VP of Gauthier Cadillac Buick GMC. “The quality

He notes that a recent Casino Night and open house held at the Edmonton store attracted many repairers from the area. “We had about 150 people there. It was a great way to show off our range and have some fun too,” he says. Attendees at the Casino Night had an opportunity to bet chips on various table games, with the highest totals at the end of the night receiving prizes. “The grand prize was a trip for two to SEMA in Las Vegas, second place was a 55-inch TV and the third place prize was a tablet.” It’s been 45 years since Ted Greenwood and his sons started serving bodyshop customers. The industry has changed and the companies in the TED Group have changed along with it. anada is truly a global leader when it comes to consolidation in the collision repair industry. Although the vast number of shops remain independent, there’s no denying that consolidation is a force to be reckoned with. The companies listed here control over a thousand shops between them, not counting facilities outside of Canada. CARSTAR has combined its Canadian and US organizations. President Michael Macaluso has indicated the network intends to grow to over 1,000 shops. Fix Auto has

long operated in other markets around the world and has recently expanded into China and Australia. The global company is now known as Fix Auto World. The partnership between CSN COLLISION CENTRES and Carrossier ProColor makes them the single largest operator in the country. There are also very large regional operators. Assured Automotive operates over 65 repair centres in Ontario. Craftsman Collision operates around 45 sites, primarily in British Columbia. The Boyd Group (headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba)

operates over 40 repair facilities in western Canada, but also operates well in excess of 300 locations in the US. Speedy Collision operates 24 collision centres on a network model and was recently acquired by Belron Canada. We’ve also seen the national roll-out of CCS, a dealership-only collision repair network operated by Consolidated Dealers, and CarrXpert, a network of new car dealerships and dealer authorized collision centres. At time of publication, CarrXpert offers support to over 500 dealerships and 200 collision centres.

ARSTAR started in Canada in 1995, when Sam Mercanti brought the franchise to Hamilton, Ontario. Mercanti’s leadership was instrumental in extending the network across the entire country. Today, there are over 240 CARSTAR locations across Canada. For many years, CARSTAR’s Canadian and US arms were separate companies with shared roots and the same vision. The two companies started to come together as one when they were purchased by Driven Brands in 2015. Today, CARSTAR North America is part of a much larger organization. Driven Brands is home to numerous automotive franchises, including Maaco and Meineke Car Care Centers. As part of this larger ecosystem, CARSTAR franchisees can expect to reap strong, consistent benefits. One of the first moves post-acquisition was the appointment of Michael Macaluso, the President of CARSTAR Canada, to head of CARSTAR North America. “We’re extremely pleased with the integration within the Driven Brands family,” said Macaluso. “Now we’re one CARSTAR, driving forward with one plan, although we are still maintaining nuances for different markets.” CARSTAR’s Canadian and US arms will hold their first combined conference as CARSTAR North America this August in Charlotte, North Carolina. Macaluso also says there are robust plans to grow CARSTAR throughout North America. CARSTAR was the first collision repair organization in North America to cross the 500 store milestone, thanks to the addition of a location in Ohio in early 2017. “Our longer term goal is 1,000 locations across North America,

and we’re slated to open 100 new stores in 2017,” said Macaluso. Much of the planned growth will be in the US market, but there are plans underway to expand CARSTAR’s footprint in Canada as well. “We only serve 35 US states, so there’s lots of white space to expand into,” said Macaluso. “In Canada, there are several key markets we want to enter and other areas where we want to optimize our presence. We’re encouraging the growth of MSOs in our network and working closely with our insurance partners to identify those opportunities.” Regarding accreditation, certification and the continuing interest of the OEMs in the collision repair industry, Macaluso pointed to CARSTAR’s heavy investments in these areas. “It’s not a new trend, but the impact of the OEM presence will accelerate in 2017,” said Macaluso. “We’re heavily invested in an OEM strategy and we don’t feel that the accreditation or certification process ends when you receive the paperwork. It’s ongoing and something you have to maintain. We’re working with AIA Canada on CCIAP and stores are working with local OEM dealerships. ix Auto was founded in Quebec in1992 by a group of six collision repairers who believed in the idea of a brand that consumers could trust and insurers could partner with. The company, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, grew nationally and globally and now has operations in nine countries around the world. From its founding to the mid-2000s, Fix Auto grew in key markets across Canada, laying the foundation for its accelerated growth in following years. Steve Leal, President and CEO of Fix Auto World, joined the Fix Auto network as a franchisee and owner of Fix Auto Cambridge in 2006. In 2008, Leal acquired the area developer rights for the province of Ontario. He was granted the area developer rights for the Atlantic provinces in November 2008, and acquired the rights for Alberta in April 2009. Leal was appointed Chief Operating Officer for Fix Auto Canada in January 2011, and as such, oversaw the operational processes of the Fix Auto model. In 2013, Leal orchestrated a buyout plan to become the largest shareholder of Fix Auto Canada. Just over a year later, he set into motion the purchase of the rights to the Fix Auto brand worldwide. In 2015, Steve Leal and Fix Auto World announced a partnership with the Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec to help fuel Fix Auto World’s global growth. t seems likely that the car manufacturers have the biggest total presence when we look at all of the companies and organizations making up the global automotive claims economy. Even a relatively small car company is a massive under t a k ing , and big c ar manufacturers are some of the largest companies in the world.

For a long time, it didn’t seem like these giants were really paying much attention to the collision repair industry, even down to the dealership level. Collision repairers were left to improve their own operations, and the wheel turned. Today, we’re seeing the growth of dealer-only collision networks and the OEMs themselves have either rolled out their own certification

and recognition programs or will likely do so in the near future. It was the luxury brands that started the trend towards certifying repair centres. The reasoning was clear: high-tech cars needed hightech repairs. While those brands are constantly pushing ahead, many of the mass-market manufacturers now offer features that also demand this high-tech approach.

Accreditation Programs Navigating the waters of independent and third-party accreditation By Mike Davey

ou know you’ve got great staff that do quality work, but can you prove it? Providing the evidence that your shop is up-to-date is the essential purpose of any independent third-party accreditation program. An OEM certification or recognition program tells the world that you are qualified to repair a particular company’s vehicles. In theory, third-party accreditation programs show exactly what you’re capable of, regardless of make and model. We’ve seen the rise of these programs fairly recently in the Canadian collision repair space. Below we’ve compiled information on four of the programs that are currently available.

CCIAP The Canadian Collision Industry Accreditation Program (CCIAP) is administered by AIA Canada, the association that also administers I-CAR Canada and the Canadian Collision Industry Forum (CCIF). The CCIAP offers two levels of accreditation. The first is “Core,” which re qu i re s t h e s h op t o successfully demonstrate compliance with both the Business Operations and the Structural Repair Capabilities requirements. Gold Class achieved by the first accreditation renewal date. The equipment list is considerably longer. It includes electronic 3-D m e a s u r i n g c ap a bi l it y, access to OEM procedures, an above ground lift and much more. The CCIAP “Advanced” accreditation is optional. It requires the shop to successfully demonstrate compliancy with ever y guideline for “C ore” plus several other requirements. The entire list is too long to replicate here, but a lot of it focuses on ensuring your shop has the equipment and training needed for aluminum repairs.

CCR The Certified Collision Repair (CCR) program is administered by the Automotive Retailers Association (ARA) of British Columbia. In brief, the program certifies collision repair service providers w h o h av e d e m o n s t r at e d commitment to service excellence through investment and training to achieve the highest levels of industry standards. The program differentiates industry members through the use of Silver, Gold, and Gold Plus level identifiers. It leads consumers to those facilities that have achieved the highest levels of industry standards for quality, safety, and service for the repair of a collision-damaged vehicle.

According to ARA of BC, the CCR program is also part of a national solution to establish and publicize the repairer’s credentials as a world-

leading repair facility and their ability to meet the requirements of industry partners and their customers. It ensures that customers receive the best in collision repair

by recognizing facilities that are qualified, competent, and fit to complete repairs on the complex vehicles of today and the future. The ARA and the AIA have synchronized their programs through a memorandum of understanding so that industry members who adopt either CCR or CCIAP will be recognized on both websites as having achieved the levels of equipment and training in-line with the accreditation needs of OEM certification programs. According to ARA, both programs have been developed to complement the OEM certification programs, not compete with them.

Certified Collision Care Certified Collision Care is the Canadian arm of Assured Performance Network, an organization headquartered in Laguna Hills, California. The organization also administers several OEM collision certification programs. Becoming a “Certified Collision Care Provider” currently certifies the facility with FCA, Ford and Nissan. The programs requirements are spelled out in detail on their

certifiedcollisioncare.ca website under the “Requirements” tab. The basic requirements are broadly similar to that of CCIAP and CCR, split into both General Business Requirements and General Technical Repair Capability.

From there, Certified Collision Care also looks in Advanced M a t e r i a l R e p a i r Te c h n i c a l Capabilities. These are split into three sections: Steel/Ferrous M a t e r i a l Te c h n i c a l R e p a i r Capability, Composite Material Technical Repair Capability (which is optional) and Aluminum Repair Capable Requirements / Non-Ferrous Required for Ford Certification Canada.

VeriFacts Automotive VeriFacts Automotive offers its Verified Quality (VQ) shop status program. To become VQ, the shop must first undergo a “Quality Calibration” to see precisely where the shop is in regards to various items of equipment, training and repair quality. VeriFacts provides feedback to the shop, possibly with a list of items to improve. A VeriFacts coach then returns to the shop for unannounced monthly visits.

Repair, replace or calibrate your operations

’m sure that we’ve all seen a lot of discussion on scanning and calibration recently. It’s an essential part of safe and high-quality repairs in today’s environment. It seems obvious that you can’t repair something unless you know precisely where the issue lies. You can think of the 2017 Buyer’s Guide and Directory as a scanner for your business. Something that seemed small was missed, and it ended up causing enormous trouble down the line. The old adage of “don’t sweat the small stuff ” simply no longer applies in the automotive world, if it ever really did. When the “small stuff ” is an uncalibrated warning sensor that could potentially lead to injury or death, sweating seems entirely appropriate. Not sweating the small stuff in today’s environment is simply irresponsible. Sweat the small stuff, and do it with maximum enthusiasm. Staff members not measuring up? Repair … or replace. Just like in repairs, it’s the hidden issues that usually cause the most trouble. It is our sincere hope that reading through this guide from cover to cover will help illuminate areas of your business that need calibration. Not repair or replacement, necessarily, just calibration. Day-to-day operations might be going great in your business, but I bet you believe there are still efficiencies to be found. Even if you know for a fact that you and your team are as efficient and high-performing as possible, you also know that tomorrow will bring new challenges. You’ll have to keep updating to stay on top of them. By now I’m sure we’ve all heard the stories of shops that used an emblem with a black backing instead of a transparent one, or of shops that didn’t know that a particular sensor needed to be calibrated after a crash. The stories all end the same way: with the shop in trouble. There are plenty of examples of these stories and they all vary in their details. Deal with the warning lights on the dashboard first, if you have any showing, but don’t assume that everything’s okay just because there are no lights showing right now. We all know that many problems are hidden and need a deep scan to be fully revealed. It’s been a long journey putting this publication together, and there’s been a lot of sweating over seemingly tiny details. Throughout the process, we had one vision to guide us: making sure that everything in these pages would be of use to collision repair professionals. Take some time with this publication. Pore over it and keep it on your desk throughout the year.
