Past artists have included Cochiti Pueblo potter, Virgil Ortiz, Sundance award–winning filmmaker Tom Shepard, Laguna Pueblo potter and poet Max Early, and Loving Vincent painter and animator Dena Peterson. Level A – All levels welcome. Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom.
Level IV – This class is for those with advanced skill or knowledge in the medium. This could include four or more classes or several years of experience. Student should be highly motivated and self–directed. Some classes in this level will require a portfolio review and/or approval by the instructor.
Level III – This class is for those who have significant experience in the medium — two or more classes or a year or more of experience.
Registration implies the responsible party understands the course levels above and has selected a course that matches their skill level. Students who are identified as being enrolled in a class above their actual level will be encouraged to move into a class that better fits their level of skills.

Charcoal Portraits: Beginner Intensive Instructor: Sophia Hanna Learn the basics of value, shape, line, space, and perspective in charcoal by working through a series of portraits. Portraiture is the ultimate combination of these fundamentals, and charcoal is an affordable medium to learn with. There will be extremely light homework every week. Through demonstration, various exercises, and final projects, you will see notable improvement in these basic skills and your art overall! Supplies will be provided.

Instructor: Jade Belanger Learn film editing techniques and how to create storyboards, characters, sets, and movement in this introduction to creating a stop motion film. Form your characters with clay, create their sets with found objects, and edit films with basic stop motion software. Students must bring a recording device to capture and edit films. This can be a cellphone, iPad, tablet, computer, or camera. Cellphones and iPads preferred as they are the most compatible with the software that will be used. All other supplies will be provided.

We will study proportions, expression, and movement. The focus will be on realistic figures, but we will also cover anime-style drawings. The fine art of metal embossing or metal relief, known as repoussé or repujado, is the working of metal to give volume and depth to decorative designs engraved on metal and crafted by hand. Your class project will be wrap-mounted tile using aluminum, or, if you prefer, your finished artwork can be on your own traditional frame. Plein Air Pastel Drawing: Architecture Focus Instructor: Vicki Square Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom. What could be better than fall colors, being outdoors, and making art? We will start in the studio, then drive a short distance from CC’s campus to explore and draw the interesting architecture of historic homes. Composition, options on methods to develop drawings, and the use of pastel chalk will be presented, as well as a brief discussion on perspective drawing. Our sessions will present a range of light to complete at least three drawings Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon. The Casa Benavides Historic Inn, in the center of Taos, will be our headquarters for this workshop. It is situated next to historic art-connected sites, such as the Mable Dodge Luhan House with its colorful past, where many early artists have stayed and painted. Additionally, it is also across the street from the Couse-Sharp Historic Site and studio museum. The artists, which these houses were named after, were part of the original “Taos Artists” group, which consisted of about 10 artists who were instrumental in putting Taos on the map as an art destination. It is also a few steps away from the historic central old town Taos Square. Information about lodging options will be shared after registration is complete.

Enchanted Textures of Taos, New Mexico
Taos’ light, color, and culture have inspired modern artists to create inspirational and memorable paintings for over 125 years. Taos is especially stunning in the autumn with glorious textures and colors. Professional artist and instructor Martha Mans will concentrate on watercolor and gouache painting with a special small presentation about how she creates her casein paintings, an increasingly popular medium. We will visit a different location each day with a demonstration by Martha to encourage you to experiment with water media techniques designed to help you hone your painting skills. After breakfast, we’ll start our day by gathering to watch a demonstration and receive technical advice. We will enjoy the rest of the day painting with a break for lunch and continue painting in the afternoon for as long as you’d like. Studying how other artists approach painting is important to your artistic growth. To further your art experience, Martha strongly encourages taking the opportunity to visit one or more of the wonderful museums and art galleries in Taos to study what other artists from past and present find captivating about Taos. We will gather for a critique in the afternoon around 4 p.m. before you head out on your own for dinner at one of the many wonderful restaurants Taos has to offer. Martha will take great care to make sure your experience as a painter in Taos is rewarding. She will work with each of you as a group and as individual painters. Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. • Suspension due to misconduct does not release the student/parent from financial obligation to Bemis School of Art.
Unless informed otherwise in writing, the Bemis School of Art considers photographs taken of students and their artwork to be permissible for publication in Colorado College, Fine Arts Center, and Bemis School of Art informational and promotional publications, including websites and social media.
• Bemis School of Art parking spaces are reserved for the use of registered students during class time only.
• The Fine Arts Center at Colorado College’s Bemis School of Art (henceforth, Bemis School of Art) reserves the right to change class instructors when necessary.
VIRTUAL POLICIES
Students registered for virtual courses are expected to conduct themselves as if participating in an on–site Bemis course. As a virtual course registrant, Bemis asks that you please be aware of your surroundings during virtual class sessions. Ensure your Zoom camera background is simple and clear of any foot traffic, including family members moving in and out of view, bright backlighting, or anything else that would be distracting to fellow students and the instructor. If need be, you can choose to turn off your camera in Zoom and turn it back on when you’re ready.
• Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make-up classes will be given for absences.
• Use of studios for commercial production work is prohibited.
• Notice of withdrawal must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 475-2444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class.
• No refunds will be given to participants who elect to withdraw from a class once it has begun.
The Bemis School of Art reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes. If it is necessary to cancel a class for any reason, all registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and given the opportunity to transfer into another class. If a participant does not wish to transfer into another class, they may instead opt to receive a gift card to use toward any future Bemis School of Art course or a refund in the method in which they originally paid (card, cash, or check).
• Checks returned are not honored for any reason and will be subject to a $15 NSF charge and subject to prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
In the event of illness or injury, the staff of the Bemis School of Art will act as the agent in obtaining medical care for registered students and have permission to contact the participant’s emergency contact(s) on file.
