T
he snow’s flying, the runs are groomed, and here in Eagle County we ease into the winter. For many, Thanksgiving is the official start of the ski season. Friends and family come together around dining room tables and kitchen islands — talking, cooking, laughing, eating, toasting. As the tables groan under the weight of their carbheavy load, it’s easy to be thankful: The Vail Valley is where everyone wants to be during these months of snow and sunshine. After Thanksgiving, there’s a brief lull, and then the holiday season continues in earnest. Concerts at the Vilar Center, World Cup races at Beaver Creek, ice sculpture installations, parties and more take over the valley. For those who would like to prolong the magic and call the Vail Valley home — or the official home away from home — it’s a good time to enlist the guidance and experience of a local REALTOR. Our organization, its members and partners exist to provide the most informed, ethical and comprehensive options for clients and their real estate needs for both primary and secondary residences as well as investment properties.

During the winter months, we retreat indoors to warm our bones after a long day of skiing and to share in the company of friends. No matter your entertaining space or budget, there are plenty of products to help ensure a successful gathering. The unusual, the beautiful, the inspiring — our local retailers provide home goods with an eye for style and attention to quality. From curated and collected places like The Kitchen Collage, Annie's and Gorsuch, this seasons' entertaining is a piece of cake. The Linen Kist has everything you need from monogrammed linens to unique napkin rings. Talk about setting a spectacular table. Also a resource for stylish gifts, they just released a book written by their own Nancy Keeler Pehder. The book, called “Refrigerator Wisdom, The Truth According to Mom,” is an adorable piece full of quotes and short stories anyone can appreciate. If you are looking for a little something more unusual, try something by J. Cotter Gallery. The local artist’s home decor items range from serving bowls to shot glasses, each a piece of art while doing double duty as serviceware. Whatever the season brings in, make sure you are prepared for it all with original and locally available pieces.

Eby Creek, rising above the town of Eagle to the north, is a community with mountaintop panoramic views views. Surrounded by BLM and national forest, residents enjoy a lot of elbow room and ample open space where wildlife abounds. The residents “like being tucked up out of the way,” say Kevin Kromer, president of Eby Creek HOA. “We haven’t changed much," and the community finds this to be one of the alluring aspects of the area. There is plenty out-in-the-country appeal. Children play together among the natural juniper and sage as well as in the large open parks. But in a blink of an eye all of the indulgences and amenities of the Town of Eagle are available. The community, consisting of single-family homes on lots of at least one third of an acre in size, is fiercely protective of its mountain-living lifestyle. Adding sidewalks and streetlights to the neighborhoods occasionally comes up in homeowner’s association meetings, but these are independent people who love and appreciate their peaceful and quiet mountain standard of living so the rural aspect of the area has not changed. They want to keep this untouched place in its natural, pristine state. But changes have been made to enhance the amenities of the neighborhood. The pavilion in the park, used throughout the summer for events of all types, was updated, resulting in a substantially larger increase in usage. A retractable garage-door-style

wall to block the elements has been added and activities, such as birthday parties and even a wedding rehearsal dinner, allows family and friends to enjoy the great outdoors while celebrating. It also makes a great gathering place for the neighborhood's annual picnic. Another amenity in the works is a pedestrian bridge that is being resurrected over Interstate 70. The bridge is being constructed approximately 200 yards to the west of the current overpass with
a connector trail to Market Street on the south and Eby Creek Road on the north. LaSheita Sayer, Public Information Officer for this project, states, “This is a fantastic way to connect both sides of the interstate.” She says that currently there are no safe routes for the folks in this area to walk, bike, jog or skateboard into town so this is a very welcomed addition. The project will be complete in 2014. Eby Creek is an area that has maintained the slow-moving, inde-
pendent and natural beauty of the original community that enticed so many people to this site in 1982 when the first lot was sold. And as Kromer puts it, “We are not a community that promotes ourselves; we’re not trying to draw people here.” According to Kromer most of the area is built out with maybe 15 open lots remaining. But with the wonderful panoramic views and the easygoing living, this is a place that’s difficult to hide, difficult to leave and easy to love.
1183 Cabin Circle | Vail Golf Course When you see the views from this residence, it is no wonder why it was the chosen location for one of the first Vail Valley homesteads and original site of the Pulis cabin. Located on a rare and large lot at nearly .75-acre, with breathtaking down-valley views across the Vail Golf Course to expansive views of the Gore Range Mountains, this home sits on a private cul-de-sac near only 3 other homes. Despite being just a short walk/ bike ride to Vail Village, you can also hop on the free shuttle and in just two stops be dropped at right at the slopes in Golden Peak. An additional 2,400 square feet can be added to the existing home or take advantage of a wonderful redevelopment opportunity to build a palatial retreat of over 10,000 square feet. This a rare opportunity for the right buyer.

The dimensions that you choose from on your child’s school picture packet actually do have design in mind. “The reason the standard sizes are what they are, is because there are certain proportions length to width that are more pleasing to the eye than other sizes,” explains John Coles, master framer at Beaver Framing in Eagle-Vail. “Three by five, four by six, five by seven, eight
20
VAIL VALLEY HOME | December 2013
by ten and eighteen by twenty four — all of those ratios.” Coles says these dimensions reflect lengthwise “portrait” placement, as well as “landscape” position, which is the same, only sideways. He explains that how to display a picture is about defining the intention of the image. “I talk about do you want to celebrate the photo; do you want to make it bigger?” he says.
“Sometimes, people don’t want to celebrate it because it is part of a montage or they are going to make an arrangement and they only have x-amount of space.” Matting is an option to make any picture pop, but Coles says only if it’s not surrounded by a lot of other images. “If it’s going to be on a wall by itself and it’s a family portrait or something like that, you want to make it im-
portant, and matting helps to make it important,” he says. Coles recommends framing to an image, rather than where it’s going to go. “Things get moved around, so you don’t want to get locked in,” he explained. “It’s more important to frame to the image than it is to the environment; it’s not that you ignore the environment, but it becomes secondary to making the image work.”

A Place for Pictures Carol Moore Mink, president of Carol Moore Interior Design in Edwards, says the stairway is a common place to stagger family memories, sometime with chronological relevance. “I try to get a similar size for the frames, about eighteen by twenty four, but you can have a variety of sizes,” she explains. Mink also recommends getting a set or more of hanging shelves, where you can group smaller three by five and four by six photos together. “I have a combination of three shelves with black and white photos, and three more shelves about two feet away that have color,” she says.
How to Hang Coles says different styles of frames can drastically impact an image. A “scoop” is a style of frame that draws your eye in, so if the image is pretty intimate with a lot of small details, he says this frame would help to bring focus into the image. Other times, however, a “reverse scoop” is necessary, such as for a landscape or natural portraits, since Cole says this frame makes your eye feel like it’s in the great outdoors. “We can help people with arrangements here, and there’s a lot of tricks you can do on your own,” he shares. “Rather than trying to hang something using trial and error to see what it looks like, you can actually cut out pieces of cardboard
“It’s more important to frame to the image than it is to the environment; it’s not that you ignore the environment, but it becomes secondary to making the image work.”

Coles says if you are looking to display multiple images and multiple frames to make a montage, sticking with more common frame proportions will make that easier. “Your eye accepts that a lot better than if the frames are all super eclectic,” he explains. “But there are people who want it to be really eclectic, with every frame different, because that’s what they’re after.” Mink keeps her frames pretty simple, she says, so that you’re not looking at the ornate frames more than you are looking at the photographs. “To design a client’s space with pictures, I would look at the frames and see if they are compatible with one another, and I would change the frames to make them more so,” she says.
and stick them temporarily on the wall until you find a nice, pleasing design.” He also recommends using blue painter’s tape to mask out your spacing. The tape goes on simply and peels off without taking paint with it. “These techniques save you from having 500 holes in your wall before you come up with something that looks decent,” Cole says. The pictures will be pleasing to more than just your eyes, however, since they will be on display for all to enjoy. “I think it’s a way for people to feel welcome in your home,” Mink says of family photos. “For instance, I just had a big party at the house for our rehearsal dinner, and my nieces and nephews were so excited that they found pictures of themselves in the house. They were like ‘thank you for including us,’ and that’s what it’s all about.”

Winter Welcome Start some family traditions at Beaver Creek By kathy filgo
Beaver Creek Plaza during Thursday Night Lights

Winter in the mountains is always something to be celebrated. Once the golf clubs and the fishing rods are stored for the season everyone awaits breathlessly for the first signs of snow. Traditions welcoming the winter season have been a touchstone for the ski resort of Beaver Creek.

On Wednesday, November 27 Beaver Creek Mountain opens and excited skiers will ride the ski lifts to make the first runs of the year. Quitting time offers a special treat because warm chocolate chips cookies await. The ninth annual World’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Competition, un-
derway on the Plaza, will present the top five recipes, chosen from a number of entry hopefuls. Voting is open the public to choose a personal favorite and the winner will have bragging rights established for another year as Beaver Creek’s official cookie recipe. Two days later, as the opening
week ceremonies continue, the crowd-pleasing 33rd annual Tree Lighting is a delight for the young and not-so-young alike. This tradition began when Beaver Creek opened the mountain for the very first time in 1980. However, over the years the sparkle and flair of the celebration has turned this

During the day the 10th annual Gingerbread House Competition will put everyone in the mood for the upcoming holidays. Creations made by everyone from professionals to kids will raise funds benefiting Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The men’s World Cup circuit will once again visit Beaver Creek to boldly face the formidable Birds of Prey racecourse on December 6 – 8. And Beaver Creek will be hosting another thrilling international ski race this season — the World Cup Ladies will also be confronting the Beaver Creek Mountain downhill challenge of the new Raptor racecourse on November 29 – December 1. Running Series: Snowshoe Edition will again welcome outdoor enthusiasts ranging from first-timers to world-class athletes. Also available is ice skating in the Village Center where you can practice figure-eights under the warm sun or the twinkling of a thousand stars. For the second year Beaver Creek provides the opportunity for women to bond, away from the responsibilities of family and the bustle of the holidays, on the splendid ski slopes for complimentary Women’s Tours; a two-hour respite on the Mountain
where tips and insider knowledge of the mountain are shared by a dynamic Ski School Ambassador. And what winter season is complete without attending another tradition – the Beaver Creek Food & Wine Weekend, a pairing of the love for great skiing, food and wine. World-renowned chefs will present interactive cooking demonstrations, gourmet wine and dinner pairings, and other events providing memorable culinary experiences, highlighted by the Eat- Drink- Ski event. A Celebrity Chef Ski Race & Brunch always brings the delectable four days to a delicious finale. The Vilar Performing Arts Center, in the heart of Beaver Creek Village, will kick-off the ski season in the appropriate Rocky Mountain tradition – with Warren Miller’s latest ski film installment, "Ticket to Ride!” This is Warren’s 65th film and it seems nothing can get the ski and boarding juices flowing like the crazy, wacky, awesome, remarkable feats of the athletes (and some non-athletes) in an inimitable Warren Miller movie. Abuzz with activity throughout the year, Beaver Creek has emerged as a desirable place to live and visit. ment throughout the home. A large great room, which comfortably houses a baby grand piano, follows the Mediterranean design with archways that link and open to a substantially sized formal dining room. Both rooms display the extraordinary west-facing views. Enjoy these same gorgeous views outdoors from the sizeable west-facing deck. You’ll find nothing more delightful than enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning or an evening cocktail from the serene privacy of the many outdoor living areas of this Winslow home. And because the kitchen is the heart of the home, 1541 Winslow has a newly remodeled kitchen and breakfast nook where the entire family can gather. The kitchen has loads of cabinet space; and the center island makes conversation while cooking a family affair. Singletree is one of the most popular communities in the valley and is ideal for families and singles alike. The sun-drenched neighborhood overlooking Edwards is beautifully landscaped thanks to the Metro district and the Singletree HOA, making hiking and biking through
the neighborhood a special event. Singletree has its own park where kids and adults play soccer and basketball and there are a plethora of trails to be explored. The community backs onto BLM land where the hiking trails through fragrant sage can stretch on for hundreds of miles. And at the center of Berry Creek Ranch the 18-hole Sonnenalp Golf Club. The beautiful clubhouse offers not just a wonderful golf experience but also a swimming pool, tennis courts and Balata’s restaurant where delicious cuisine enchants the palate and a spectacular deck with delicious views to enchant the eye. The location at Singletree is also very conducive for families because of the proximity to excellent schools, as well as the convenience of the services and amenities of Edwards and Riverwalk at Edwards. Singletree is a friendly, active neighborhood that both locals and second-homeowners treasure. The convenient location for everyday living is unsurpassed. 1541 Winslow Road provides the perfect opportunity to join this community in a beautiful house that you will be proud to call home.

For some, the term “great room” may conjure up images of a drafty medieval castle, full of suits of armor, velvet chairs and cathedral ceilings. Around here, a great room is the epicenter of the home – the family room and living room combined. The place where everyone convenes. Especially during the winter holiday season, it’s important to make it welcoming and comfortable. “The concept of a great room is a difference we see a lot around here, especially going from primary to secondary homes,” says Slifer Designs president Yvonne Jacobs. “In primary residences, classically the family room, living room and dining room are separate. When we say great room, it’s all-inclusive. It’s one big, great room.” Clearly, it’s more of a challenge to make a big room comfortable than a small room, especially when the great room serves such a myriad of functions. “Preferably, you’ve incorporated the kitchen and dining area, so the great room becomes an area where the cooking is going on, the kids are playing games, people are socializing. Sometimes even the entry way is included,” says Jim Powell of J. Powell and Associates. “It becomes a working area where everyone gathers.” So, how do you make it work? How do you make it feel like a cozy space for just the couple of the house on a chilly morning as well as a holiday season full of visitors? There are a few components that every great room should have: an awesome view from a large window, vaulted ceilings and a fireplace and open access to the kitchen.
Vaulted ceilings, a terrific view and open access to the kitchen are all great room must-haves, as seen in this Slifer Designs home.
USING THE SPACE Keeping in mind that meals and snacks are being prepared, he or she doing the chopping is going to want in on the conversation. “You don’t want the person in the kitchen to feel left out. That’s the last thing someone wants: to be in the kitchen cooking while everyone else is out there having fun. It’s not uncommon to have two islands – one in the kitchen, one outside of it — so it’s not a far walk from serving and going back and forth,” Jacobs says. That said, it’s important to have ample space to keep the kitchen separate if need be. “You need it enough away that if you’re having a dinner
catered, the staff is shielded,” Powell points out. Also, since the room is large and multi-purpose, having more than one seating area is key. “Typically in a great room, some people are watching TV, some are playing a game, some are having snacks. If it’s a big enough room you can do quadrants of furniture pieces, but you have to be careful on your selection, because you don’t want it to look like a hotel lobby,” Jacobs says.
That’s the last thing someone wants: to be in the kitchen cooking while everyone else is out there having fun.

room can be tricky. One thing to keep in mind: Even though it is a large room, don’t over-furnish. “One of the biggest problems is putting too much furniture in that space. People might think, ‘I’ve got all of this and this is where people gather.’ But you want to keep the space open so people can circulate,” Powell says. “Use ottomans and hearth cushions rather than another pair of chairs or big piece of furniture. If people are entertaining, you want to be able to flow through.” Also, size matters. Just because
44
VAIL VALLEY HOME | December 2013
the room is vast, doesn’t mean each furniture item needs to be. “The scale has to be exactly right, depending on the size of the house and room,” Jacobs says. “The furniture can’t be too tiny or too big. I would say stay away from everything symmetrical. Mix it up and make it more eclectic.” Also, nobody wants to be forced to stand up or sit on the corner of a coffee table. A rule for numbers is to have enough seats for everyone you anticipate sleeping in the house. But it’s better to have mobile items like ottomans that
can be stashed neatly under tables. “A lot of people are making these big ottomans with trays or they like having really big coffee tables with drawers, so if they want to break out a game of cards from a drawer it’s easy,” Jacobs says. “Also, people are not shying away from sectionals because they want comfy seating.” For times when the house is less full, there are other areas of the room to consider. “As far as trying to make the great room work for smaller groups, very often you’ll have a
Kitchen tables go beyond the dining scene. They're good spots for people to gather, play games and more. When designing a great room, the scale of the furniture is an important factor. If it's too small, it looks dwarfed by the surroundings; too large, and it feels overdone.
pair of chairs on the table over to a window with a nice view that you could have coffee at in the morning or wine and conversation at night,” Powell says. “As you walk into the space, you have these little intimate areas in this big vaulted space.” In addition to providing plenty of space between the furnishings, be aware that mixed materials work best for both comfort and aesthetic appeal in a great room. Matching sets don’t fit the bill. “At Slifer, we don’t do matching sets. It’s all unique and put together,” Jacobs says. “Usually you want a nice soft sectional or sofa, maybe one fur, even faux fur, like a long, furry bench with throws. Chenille or mohair are cozy types of fabric. Some people are using linens, too. We still see a lot of leather, but it’s
usually leather chairs, like that soft, bomber jacket material.” ACCESSORIES Comfy, decorative pillows and throws add to the welcoming warmth of a great room, as do lamps and rugs. Jacobs emphasizes that dimmers are mandatory for lights and also lamps to accommodate reading and independent projects. “There are a couple of systems you should have to go from very bright to medium,” Jacobs says. “The first layer of lights are all in ceiling, second layer on the wall — art lights — and the third layer are the lamps — path lighting. These are very important if you’re reading books on the sofa.” Because floors are typically wood or tile, the last item — or maybe the first — is a rug. This
single item adds a wave of warmth to the great room and also provides a simple object from which to build a color scheme. “Even acoustically you need to bring a rug into the space, softening it,” Powell says. “Often, you’ll select the rugs first and bring the other furniture around it.” And with the rug, don’t go too small. “People say the rug is too expensive so they put a tiny rug down that looks like a postage stamp,” Jacobs says. “This is the great room of your house and if there were a centerpiece, this would be it. Don’t cut corners here.” There is a lot of debate as to whether a TV belongs in the great
room. Powell is personally against it. Jacobs feels it has a place. The obvious solution is a television that can be easily hidden. “A lot of people have pop-ups, so it will look like a side piece of furniture. The TV is totally hidden and will pop up if you need it. Some people will put a screen in that comes down in front of the fireplace. You can put a piece of artwork over it that slides back,” she says. “The only thing is we don’t see anymore is armoires. No big pieces of furniture.”

Guest Room Grandeur Though visiting friends is fun, it's even better when they provide a well-equipped haven. By Kim Fuller

The home is a beacon of hospitality, welcoming others into the light of your heart and the warmth of your world. “When I think about guest rooms and having guests, I think the most important thing is their comfort,” explains Kelli Holtz, ASID, principal at Holtz Design Studio in Vail. “Because they are guests in your home, and your home is an extension of yourself.” Holtz says good design is inspired by multiple stimulations — much more than just what meets the eye. “I think of design as relating to your senses,” she says. “Like beautiful smells and tactile touch.” Natalie Smith Andl, interior designer at Natalie Smith Design & Andl Interiors in Vail, says when it comes to a guest room, it’s best to keep it clean, bright and fresh. “When you have company, this is your chance to show them a slice of your version of heaven,” Andl says. “They are obviously coming to visit you, but it’s also nice to provide your guest with a retreat — after all, they are on vacation.” First Impressions What you see is what you get when you first walk into home, and guests who are there to stay should be welcomed with a touch of charm. “I always love to put fresh flowers in a guest room,” shares Holtz. “I just feel like it’s something that’s alive and it acknowledges guests — it’s really nice for them to feel special.” Make the space airy and bright with lightly colored window coverings and wall colors, recommends Andl, and go with lighter colors for bedding as well. “Finish the bed with a pop of brightly colored pillows and a coverlet at the end of the bed,” she says. “This is your chance to show individuality. Since the base colors are lighter, you’re working with a clean
48

canvas, so make a statement — accent pillows are easy and inexpensive to change out.” Spark memory-making with a guest’s sense of smell. Candles are a great way to create ambiance in a guest room or bathroom, providing a feeling of ease and serenity. “Scented candles and fresh linens are always things that stand out to me,” Holtz says.
Dynamic Illumination Lighting is a key addition to every guest room. Andl suggests having both task and ambient lighting, as well as options of night lighting for sleepy strolls. “Being that it is an unfamiliar place, providing various lighting options to guide a guest’s way through the night will reward you will fewer stubbed toes, bruised knees, and you’ll
get a happy guest,” she says. “Bedside table lamps are also another avenue to show your individuality — go with something fun, yet functional.” Holtz says lighting should be dimmable, so guests can set the scene for themselves. “Ideally, you have a fireplace for people and they can flip the switch to create an awesome candlelit glow from the fire,”
"When I think about guest rooms and having guests, I think the most important thing is their comfort.”
she says. “With lighting, you just need versatility and flexibility for people’s comfort.” Blackout drapery is also an important element according to Holtz. She says to provide a sheer window shade for privacy and some light, and then to have a blackout drapery that can come over the shade to accommodate guests who want no light at all.
Bedding Bliss “The beautifully designed space should obviously have designer pillows,” Holtz says. “But to the next level, you want to make sure your guests are sleeping well, so have a soft, medium and firm pillows behind those.” She recommends the Linen Kist in Avon for any and all styles of linens and comforters, as well as a variety of sleeping pillow
blends and firmness ratings. “The main objective of creating ‘the perfect guest room’ is making sure your guests feel at home,” explains Nikki Kern, co-owner of The Linen Kist with her husband, Nick. “The hotel-style trend is catching on very quickly here in the valley — a serene décor with lightweight, washable linens are in demand.” Kern says the store is cur-
rently highlighting a beautiful Italian sateen cotton collection from Sferra in the showroom. “The foundations of the bed are just as important as top of the bed aesthetics,” she says. “Making sure your products are hypo-allergenic is also an important aspect.” Andl suggests wrinkle-free bedding to save time when making beds between visitors. After all, just as important as the guests’ comfort is convenience for the host. “Also, always provide a fan — some people cannot sleep without white noise, and the last thing you need is a sleep deprived guest,” Andl says. “A bottle of water next to the bed can also help after traveling to avoid dehydration.”

Amenities and Accessories “It’s important to offer storage and seating, but don’t over furnish the space,” Andl explains. “A small lounge chair and side table will offer your guest a chance to sit and read without sitting on the bed.” A few books can provide not only enjoyment for your guests, but also catalysts for conversation. “Provide a few things that speak to you,” says Holtz. “If I don’t know someone very well, a book can bring us closer together because they looked at it in their room and started a conversation with me about it.” Holtz recommends visiting The Bookworm in Edwards to find regional and popular gift books. “We live in this beautiful area, and there are so many books written about it,” she says. “Sharing these with guests is a perfect way to connect with people in your home, and to pique their interest about their visit.” The space should also cater to sound, and Brad Ryan, owner of Elite Electronic Designs in Vail, recommends an all-in-one alarm, radio, wireless music stream and device docking station. He likes the iHome iBT97 Bluetooth Stereo FM with USB

Charging, but says all levels of quality are available to buy— from cheap to super high-end. To cozy up the floor and brush up décor, Holtz says to visit The Scarab in Minturn for great accessories and amazing rugs. “If people don’t have carpet, a rug is a great way to cozy up the floor,” she says. “And for a guest bathroom too — make sure there is always something soft underfoot for people.” Andl elaborates, and says to go the extra mile and add bathroom accessories like Q-tips, cotton balls, feminine products, a hair dryer, shampoo and conditioner, soap, an extra razor, toothpaste and a toothbrush. “Bedroom slippers, a robe and fresh flowers will also score big points,” she says. “Make sure your guests feel at home — how you would like to feel.” The room is yours to decorate and define, so let your senses lead the way. “I think of a guest room as a really neutral, calming, spalike space,” says Holtz. “But other people say it’s the one opportunity to do something really fun in a space, because you don’t have to live in it, it’s just for your guests.”
