ummer’s in full swing, especially on Vail Valley golf courses. Warm weather, sunny skies and long days make it easy to play early, late and often. From Adam’s Rib Ranch on Eagle County’s west side, to Vail Golf Club on its east, there are more than a dozen options for the beginner, intermediate and expert player. But the 19th hole is open to everyone — no experience necessary. The Vail Board of REALTORS® Foundation is hosting its first golf tournament September 24 at the Sonnenalp Golf Course. There will be two events happening simultaneously: a traditional tournament following USGA rules, as well as a looser format for the less serious golfer. For more information contact the Vail Board of REALTORS(r) at 970-766-1028. As July cedes to August, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival finishes up and the Vail Dance Festival begins. Following that, the Vail Jazz Festival wraps up its summer-long performances. For those who prefer to kick back with a beer in the sunshine at a festival, Oktoberfest is celebrated in Beaver Creek, Lionshead and Vail Village on successive weekends. And as always, hiking, biking, rafting and fishing are popular activities. There’s no shortage of ways to fill a Vail Valley summer. And if you’re ready to trade this vacationer’s paradise for a home of your own, now is a good time to talk to a local REALTOR®. Cheers,

The nineteenth hole: summer's answer to apres ski. After a round of refreshment at the clubhouse, why not finish out your nineteenth at home? Whether you are outside enjoying the last moments of the sun before it sets over the hills or inside gathered around your favorite pub table, a well organized setup ensures success. From designer service ware to fine art, these products are a hole in one. Designer decanters elevate cocktail hour no matter what you’re drinking. Opt for a variety of shapes, so you don’t confuse the scotch with the bourbon. Coordinate with rocks glasses for full effect. Gorgeous trays and carts add a sense of occasion to the festivities, and make hosting even more fun than being hosted. Don’t forget that any 19th hole deserves a little golf-inspired décor. Consider adding these teed-up ceramic sculptures from Vail Village Arts, or an expansive painting that focuses on fields of green. Whether or not golf is “a nice walk spoiled by a little white ball,” the rewards at the end can be sweet.

FLOORING
Beneath the feet Roger Benedict and Ruggs Benedict have been helping Eagle County homeowners find the perfect flooring for more than 35 years.
Roger Benedict has carried on a long legacy of providing quality flooring for homeowners. Both his father and grandfather worked in the flooring business in Eastern Colorado, until his father decided Vail offered better opportunities. Roger Benedict followed in their footsteps, and Ruggs Benedict has served Vail Valley for more than 35 years.
ing that they are making an important contribution to the success of the business. They also work together very well. Q: How does your team help customers decide what's best for them? A: The approximately 1,000 area rugs are all in stock, and they are all hanging on displays, not piled up — I hate digging through piles of rugs. More than half of the area rugs are handmade, imported pieces. Most of them are available in a wide range of sizes. We start off with over 200 choices under $200. You can find a rug that will fit any room and any budget. In order to fulfill customer expectations of a quick turn around, we stock 140 choices of quality carpet and hardwood floor.
Q: What was it like launching your flooring business in a small garage in a trailer park in the Vail Valley with your brothers? A: We didn't know that we were launching a business at the time. We just wanted to make enough money for a ski pass and some new Lange boots. Installing carpet and hardwood flooring made it possible to earn a decent living in the early growth years of Vail and have plenty of time to enjoy it. Q: How do you exceed your customers' expectations? A: When people are remodeling their homes, they want to move from planning to completion pretty quickly. That is why we stock over 140 choices of quality carpet and hardwood flooring. They can buy their new flooring today, and we can install right away. We want it to be easy to have new floors. When they are shopping for area rugs, they really need to see the rugs in their home in order to make the best choice. We stock about 1,000 area rugs. Shoppers can check them out like library

Q: What makes your installation team outstanding? A: We don’t use “freelance” installers or independent sub-contractors. Our installation department is made up of all full-time Ruggs Benedict employees. They are thoroughly trained in the best installation practices. We can stand behind our Beautiful Guarantee and our lifetime
installation guarantee because our installers don't cut corners. Q: Some of your managers have been with you since 1989 and the mid-‘90s. How do you promote employee longevity? A: The mantra of my personal management style is: Leave them alone and let them get their work done. We also have well established, efficient operating systems, and each of my managers has a well-defined area of responsibility. They all like know-
Q: Tell us about the quality of products you offer, and also any green/sustainability qualities your products have. A: Green products have been easy to find in flooring. For hundreds of years, the fiber of choice for fine carpets and area rugs has been wool. We didn't have to invent a new green product. Our mission has been to bring an abundant selection of wool carpeting and rugs to the marketplace. Almost all of the area rugs that we sell are wool. More than half of the carpeting that we sell for residential use is wool, while the national average is about 4.5 percent.

BATHROOMS WITHOUT BORDERS Think a door on the bathroom is a given? Not when you’re creating a master suite – where the bedroom and bathroom merge into a relaxing retreat.
M
Miss Manners might tell you it’s rude not to close the bathroom door before slipping into a bubble bath for a long soak. But in this case, her well-meaning advice would be a tad behind the times. Doors and walls are no longer a given when it comes to the dividing line between the bedroom and bathroom. In some homes, these two spaces are merging to create the perfect spot to unwind after a long day at work. The new master suite brings spa features home – and right into the bedroom. So let’s get back to that hot bath. After adjusting to the water, you could have a conversation with your spouse as he or she watches TV in bed. No shouting required. Don’t feel like talking? Just tune into your favorite show on the TV near the tub. If this sounds like a vacation at an upscale resort, there’s good reason. “The hospitality industry is having a huge influence on what people want in their personal bathrooms,” says Alan Hilsabeck Jr., a designer at Premier Kitchens & Baths, Dallas. “People will say, ‘I just got back from the W Hotel and I want my master suite to mimic what I saw.’” This means waving goodbye to the lonely showerhead and featureless tub. While amenities vary

as widely as tastes and budgets, a typical master suite includes an oversized shower, fancy tub, and his and hers vanities. Addons range from morning kitchens and workout rooms to seating areas with upholstered furniture. Often, the shower is big enough for two, and there’s a wide range of choices for water delivery, including dual showerheads, hand showers, overhead rainfall heads or a full-body spray. “There might be six nozzles shooting out at you from different heights,” says Lori Carroll, an interior designer at Lori Carroll and Associates, Tucson, Ariz. “It’s kind of like a car wash.” When it comes to tubs, there’s a trend toward bubbler models over whirlpool versions. The former can be more relaxing with warm air bubbles that rise from the bottom of the tub, creating a more calming experience than powerful jets. For the visually inclined, there are chromatherapy tubs with soothing, colorful lights built-in to brighten up the water. Bathers can choose their favorite hue or let the tub automatically cycle through a rainbow of choices. While spa and luxury features are one of the strongest trends in bathrooms, there’s more of a mixed response to open floor

plans. Hilsabeck says homeowners who fully embrace the concept might use the tub or vanities as the transition between bedroom and bath. The shower typically offers partial privacy while the toilet resides behind a partition or in its own small room. “I would definitely say there’s less modesty for the society as a whole,” he says. “Look at the entertainment industry. What used to be R is PG-13.” In some cases, however, there’s still a need for seclusion. Holly Rickert, a designer with
Ulrich in Ridgewood, N.J., says one factor is a couple’s age. Families with young children, for example, may want to stick with a door in order to create much-needed private space. Luckily, it’s not an all or nothing proposition. In some cases, there’s simply an open passageway between the bedroom and bathroom. Other homeowners opt for half-walls or even French doors with frosted glass. “Visually you’re disconnected, but there’s still light transfer,” Rickert says about the latter option.

What vail wants Douglas Miller DeChant, owner of the custom residential firm has been helping people build their dreams for more than 25 years. “Openness, transparency and light,” he says. “That’s what we want in all our rooms. But the twist for the master bath is we also need privacy.” DeChant says what people are asking for in a master bath isn’t drastically different from what they wanted a decade ago, but priorities have changed a bit. Here’s what his clients want in their master bathrooms these days: 1. The ability to step outside to an adjacent terrace, possibly with an outdoor shower. 2. Multiple showerheads, as well as steam. 3. Jetted tubs or direct access to a private outside hot tub. 4. Showers with linear drains and no curbs. 5. Bathroom fixtures arranged like furniture. 6. Semi-separate areas for husband and wife, especially toilet compartments; sometimes two entirely distinct master baths. 7. A bath that communicates directly with dressing area and closets, and arranged to allow for bath/dressing activities without returning through the bedroom.
shower for ambiance rather than bathing. Water runs down a copper face, into a trough and then re-circulates. It provides a focal point while showering or pleasant background noise while standing at the sink. Other upgrades include heated floors, flat-screen TVs and sound systems. To increase the comfort level even more, some homeowners choose to add sofas, chairs or benches in the bathroom. Carroll usually opts for vinyl fabric to stand up against water. Then there are more specialized touches. Schrage has seen homeowners add meditation or relaxation rooms, separate makeup areas and even enclosed showers that double as steam rooms. For the fitness minded, a small workout room with a maximum of three or four pieces of equipment can be incorporated. Those who want sustenance without trekking across the house add morning kitchens, with coffee makers, small refrigerators and sometimes even another small sink. Think you may need an upgrade of your own? Before you start buying fixtures, Hilsabeck says it’s important to make sure your house can handle the water needs of those new products. A plumber or designer can make sure you’ve got the pipes and water pressure necessary to handle special tub and shower features. His other advice: Choose a design professional who specializes in bathrooms. They’ll have a better handle on what’s available and know how to solve any bathroom-specific challenges. He also recommends heading to your designer’s office with pictures from your favorite home-design magazines in hand. They’ll give the designer a good feel for your style and preferences – and you’ll be happier with the finished product. © CTW Features

Light it right, outside Whether you’re hosting a casual barbecue on the deck or a catered outdoor dinner party, lighting is key. Here’s how to let the right light shine on every event. By Patricia Rivera
W
When it comes to emitting a special glow through an outdoor space, the sky is the limit. Lighten up your next gathering with an assortment of ideas that range from whimsical groupings of candles to strategically located moonlighting fixtures placed in a tree canopy. “Lights add so much to the mood, especially at night,” says Phoenix writer and designer Kathy Cano-Murillo. Known as Crafty Chica, she’s an expert at finding low-cost ways to illuminate patios and decks with strings of lights that she transforms into Boudoir box lights and baby food jars that become hanging “candeliers.” A few minutes of investment may leave your guests praising you for hours. Even non-crafty types can find ready-to-light tiki torches or electric luminarias that transform the look of any outdoor setting. Consider creating an inviting setting with a few permanent lighting additions. Long-lasting projects John Pletcher, owner of the architectural and low-voltage landscape lighting company Natural Accents LLC, in Kansas City, Mo., says strategically placed lights can turn yards into magical spaces. Many owners of older homes still use bright floodlights, which do more

than scare away the critters. “You want to create a warm environment that is artistic as well. There is a lot that you can do with lights,” he says. Well-lit patios and decks also keep guests and family members from tripping. Decks, for instance, could benefit from recessed fixtures that mount on the walls of the steps or larger fixtures that attach to deck railings or posts and illuminate either outward or downward. Pletcher suggests down-lighting to replicate the soft glow of natural moonlight. Fixtures are discreetly placed on eaves or in tall leafy trees. He sometimes uses lightly tinted lenses to produce an even softer light or enhance skin tones in gathering areas. For a cross-lighting effect, use two or three fixtures that are aimed so their beams intersect. Down-lighting works well in patio areas or tree-lined drives. Up-lighting with spotlight fixtures recessed into the ground creates a focal point. Backlighting creates a silhouette effect by illuminating a wall or structure. Outdoor lighting kits exist for many projects at specialized shops or large hardware stores. Also, look for lighting specialists who can share some new techniques. Pletcher says he uses low-voltage lighting for all his projects to avoid excess light. This approach minimizes glare, light

Use candles of all sizes to light the area around a small table for two. Consider clustering near the table several ceramic pots lined with pebbles or sand and candles. On the table, use a floating centerpiece or glasses made for floating candles.
Line the perimeter of your yard with luminarias, traditionally candle-lighted, sand-filled paper lanterns. You’ll find reusable, non-flammable kits that feature various images, such as butterflies and flowers, as well as electrical luminarias.
Family gatherings
Formal celebrations
Outdoor patio light strings, which use small bulbs that emit a warm light, can lend themselves to any theme imaginable. Cano-Murillo uses soda cans to make stars. By punching several holes in the center of the star, she’s able to fit it through the light bulbs. Another idea is to fit tiny terra cotta pots, about 2-inches in diameter, over the lights. You can dress them up with any color fabric or ribbon. She likes the look of fabric scraps from a Mexican serape. Small plastic or silk flowers can also fit over the light bulbs.
Tiki torches can make a regular garden look elegant and exotic. In addition to the more traditional bamboo tiki lights, you’ll find metal torches made of copper, bronze or steel. Electric tiki torches are also in the market. The AGI Group, Inc., in Sarasota, Fla., suggests placing a few large torches around a central gathering. Then, to create the look of a Polynesian fire dance, cast a sizzling glow around a pond, fountain or waterfall with six torches. ©CTW Features

Cuddle up Create companionship in your garden. By Becky Garber
Many plants thrive on being placed close to one another. Take tomatoes and basil, for example. They’re a marriage made in heaven even before they get to the kitchen. What experienced gardeners call “companion plants” will bring in good insects for the benefit of the whole garden. Others will drive bad bugs away. And some, like tomatoes and basil, thrive best together than when planted apart. All you need to know is who loves whom in the plant world. Basil improves the growth and flavor of tomatoes and will also repel thrips — a common Colorado garden pest. If you add the typical Italian herbs to the mix by planting parsley, oregano and thyme, you will enhance the winning garden combo. Oregano is a flavorful herb that provides overall pest protection throughout the garden. Becky Garber is a member of the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado of which Neils Lunceford, a landscaping company, is a member. You can contact them at 970-468-0340. Alyssum Plant it alongside potatoes and broccoli. It attracts delicate beneficial insects, such as predatory wasps and attracts hoverflies whose larvae devour aphids.
Chrysanthemum It has been used as botanical pesticides for centuries. White flowering chrysanthemums repel Japanese beetles.
Lavender Attracts butterflies and bees and repels fleas, whitefly and moths.
Marigolds Well known as a pest deterrent. They keep soil free of bad nematodes, beetles and whiteflies and discourage many other insects. Plant freely throughout the garden but avoid bean and cabbage plants. Marigolds must be a scented variety for them to work. Downside: they can attract spider mites and slugs.
Nasturtium Great companion to radishes, cucumber, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and mustards. It deters aphids, squash bugs and striped pumpkin beetles and improves both growth and flavor. Since it likes poor soil with low moisture and no fertilizer, set potted nasturtiums among garden beds. The leaves, flowers and seeds of nasturtiums are all edible and great in salads.
Zinnias Attract hummingbirds which eat whiteflies. Pastel varieties can be used as a trap crop for Japanese beetles. All zinnias attract bees and other insect pollinators.

Catnip Deters flea beetles, aphids, Japanese beetles, squash bugs, ants and weevils. It also helps to repel mice.
Chamomile, peppermint, dill, sage and rosemary Plant these with broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Chamomile is also a host to hoverflies and wasps.
Cilantro (coriander) Repels aphids, spider mites and potato beetle.
Dill Plant with cucumbers to attract beneficial predators. Also repels aphids, spider mites and squash bug. Dill improves growth of cabbage and lettuce. Do not plant near carrots, caraway, cauliflower, corn, potatoes or tomatoes.
Onions (Alliums) Plant with carrot, chamomile, beets, strawberries, broccoli, dill, lettuce, summer savory and tomatoes. Onions planted with strawberries help the berries fight disease. Keep onions away from peas and asparagus.

Sage Plant with broccoli, cauliflower, rosemary, cabbage, and carrots. It deters cabbage moths, beetles, black flea beetles and carrot flies. Do not plant near cucumbers or onions. Allow sage to flower so it will attract many beneficial insects.
Chives Improves growth and flavor of carrots and tomatoes and also work well with broccoli, cabbage and mustard. Chives repel aphids from tomatoes and grapes. Avoid planting them near beans and peas.
Garlic Plant with beets for flavor and pest control. Plant near roses to repel aphids. It also benefits cukes, peas, lettuce and celery. Garlic accumulates sulfur, a naturally occurring fungicide which will help prevent disease.
Tarragon Plant throughout the garden as few pests like it. It also enhances growth and flavor of vegetables.

And then, of course, there are the award-winning golf courses. Red Sky is a private membership club with members and guests each enjoying their own separate clubhouse with alternate play daily between the Tom Fazio and the Greg Norman courses. And let there be no doubt that golfers are being challenged by the very best: Links Magazine Travel + Golf ranks Red Sky Ranch in “America’s Top 100 Private Golf Communities” and Zagat Golf has Red Sky Ranch ranked “#1 and #2 Golf Courses
in Colorado.” Golf Digest put Red Sky Ranch in the “Top 25 of the Best Resorts in North America” and Forbes magazine awarded Red Sky Ranch “12 Best Private Golf Communities.” While the golfing is unsurpassed the clubhouses are quite special as well. The Norman course’s majestic log clubhouse is for members only and hosts fine dining in the Silver Sage Restaurant. Sunset views of Castle Peak along with the culinary delights on the menu can be appreciated from the expansive deck. Break-
fast and lunch are served for residents only and the restaurant is open for dining to the public during the dinner hours. Homeowners can take advantage of the convenience of takeout for all meals. And just so all members feel at home, Silver Sage bakes homemade chocolate chip cookies all day long and members feel free to drop in any time to grab this special treat from a bottomless cookie jar. Another culinary delight whipped up in the Silver Sage kitchen for the dessert menu is homemade ice cream with a daily change of flavor. In the Fazio course clubhouse, the elegant Western architecture provides guests with the finest, most exquisite surroundings. The clubhouse is home to the delightful Summer Thyme restaurant which is open for breakfast and lunch, and is also open for the public to enjoy. This comfortable gathering place after a round of golf, or simply a delicious mid-day meal, also features a large deck from which to enjoy the valley’s wonderful summer weather. The location of Red Sky Ranch near the world renowned Vail and Beaver ski resorts, and just 20 minutes from the Eagle County Airport, has made this the perfect spot for both primary and vacation home owners alike. Ninety years ago a rancher was looking for the perfect place to settle. He found a beautiful area with moderate weather, built a life with a special lifestyle, and called it home. When it was time for a transition, and the old ranch became the new Red Sky Ranch, the new “settlers” were looking for the exact same thing – a very special lifestyle and a place to call home.

The number of days properties have stayed on the market has been decreasing since the end of 2012 and the median sales price increased slightly in May, according to the Vail Board of REALTORS® report. What does all this mean for prospective buyers? Julie Retzlaff, chairperson of the Vail Board of REALTORS® explains that the variables are directly correlated. “Don’t let the numbers change your mind about buying,” says Retzlaff. “A REALTOR® will be able to help you navigate the market and find the right property. Inventory may be low in some areas of the valley, but new properties are coming on the market each day. Many sellers are taking advantage of the improv-

There has been plenty of talk on a national level about the economic recovery recently, of which a significant part is the coinciding recovery of the real estate market. For months qualified buyers have been enjoying record low mortgage rates and equally low home prices. However, evidence suggests that those days may be drawing to a close and that now, may in fact, be an opportune time for prospective buyers who have been watching from the sidelines to get in the game and purchase a home. Across the United States real estate inventories continue to be low, causing prices for existing inventory to creep up in some areas. Mortgage rates also rose above 4 percent in June and are expected to hold at that level through the year. The Vail Valley market, though

ing conditions and bringing their homes to market. Interest rates are still historically low, and it is always good to be pre-qualified prior to starting your search, to allow you to be ready to make an offer on a property. This is especially important in a situation where there are multiple offers on a property.” According to William DesPortes, mortgage loan originator at Central Rockies Mortgage Corporation, interest rates on “conforming” 30 year fixed mortgages, loans of $625,000 or less, are being quoted at roughly 4.25 percent for qualified buyers. “The rates fluctuate a bit, but 4.25 percent is a pretty good benchmark right now,” says DesPortes. “The rates that I quote today are a full percent higher than what I would have quoted this spring. The turning point happened roughly June 14th and I highly doubt that we’ll see 30 year fixed rate mortgages in the three percent range again. “ DesPortes does not expect such rapid increases in rates as those in June moving forward, but does believe that rates will stay steady at 4 percent, at least through the remainder of 2013. He says that quick mortgage rate increases of June were unprecedented and caused by market volatility. “If I had a friend who had been considering the purchase of a home for a while, but hadn’t done it yet, I’d tell them they should get the ball rolling quickly,” adds DesPortes. “Mortgage rates are on the rise and so are home prices. I believe this is the ‘sweet spot’ for buying. Prospective buyers should meet with a mortgage lender or bank, find out what they can afford and what they qualify for, and begin putting the pieces together. That would include finding a REALTOR that they want to work with and exploring the market and what is out there.” DesPortes also says the buyers should be prepared to move quickly when they find a home that they wish to purchase. He says that he’s heard of bidding
wars between buyers recently and knows of people who have missed out on the home of their choice because another buyer moved more quickly. “I’ve also noted that well priced homes in desirable neighborhoods are moving very quickly. Far faster than they have in the past few years,” he says. Retzlaff agrees with DesPortes, that people who want to take advantage of today’s home prices and mortgage rates, should begin the process of getting financing and exploring the available home inventory. “Local REALTORS® know our Valley’s real estate market better than anyone,” she says. “The Vail Board of REALTORS® membership has experts in each community and neighborhoods from East Vail to Gypsum and every place in between. Also, because they work specifically in our market, they are intrinsically aware of the area’s individual trends and other important factors that buyers should be aware of including proximity to schools, skiing, golf courses and anything else a buyer may base a purchase decision on.” A local REALTOR® can also assist in finding a local lender. Local lenders have key insights into this market. The Vail Board of REALTORS® has local lenders as members who can help who can assist any buyer through the lending process. In any case, information is vital for making successful decisions in real estate sales and purchases. Vail area REALTORS® have the knowledge and experience to get buyers and sellers through the process. Only a local REALTOR® can provide insight into the statistics found in the Market Indicators Report. The Vail Board of REALTORS® recently updated its website, www.vbr.net, to make it an outstanding tool for exploring listings, finding open houses, viewing Vail Valley information, finding a REALTOR® and finding trusted partners such as mortgage officers.

It’s true: Mountain ski areas and golf courses can be whatever outdoor enthusiasts make them. But some mountain resorts fit certain demographics better than others. Here’s a look at three courses that challenge avid golfers, cater to family fun and offer a venue for special events, especially weddings.

Challenge your accuracy: Beaver Creek Golf Club The limited land in Beaver Creek tested master golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s creativity, and true to his award-winning form, he designed a golf course that easily ranks among the best of the 270-plus he has masterminded. His name has become a renowned trademark, like Rolex or Faberge, and it assures great craftsmanship, as well as highlights natural beauty. Shorter holes place a premium

their way downhill on the front nine holes, then work their way upward through the back holes. That means that a 100-yard shot on a front nine hole may mean actually shooting 80 or 90 versus 100 yards, and the uphill journey means shooting 110 or 115 yards on a 100-yard shot, Rusin said. “Our greens are relatively small, and they do have some undulations, so you have to pay attention to the high and low spots,” Rusin said. “It’s not the longest golf course, so what golfers don’t realize is how narrow the holes can be … you

on accuracy at Beaver Creek Golf Club. The course sits between luxury homes and a stream that runs through 14 of the 18 holes. “We’re not the longest of golf courses, but we definitely have a premium on accuracy, “ said assistant golf pro C.J. Rusin. “A lot of shots are difficult because there’s not a lot of room for hazards.” Beaver Creek features plenty of bunkering around the greens, so golfers can’t roll shots onto the green — they actually have to land the ball on the green. In addition, rather than golf courses that include side hill, uphill and downhill lies, golfers work

don’t just stand up here with your driver and swing away. … (It’s about) the selection of club and shot-making ability.” The course starts out quite demanding, with the first three holes sloping right or left. For example, on the second hole, when golfers hit the balls short, they want to miss left instead of right, because the left bounce off the bank will result in a delivery onto the green. Golf pros become very helpful on Beaver Creek’s course, not only telling people where to aim and where to miss, but also analyzing how effective a

golfer’s misses and aims were. “You get penalized quite a lot on this course for errant shots,” said assistant golf pro Ian Parham. “You can’t just get out there and bang it straight down the middle. It has to be more to the left or right … it’s only 6,900 yards from the back tees, but it’s challenging.” In addition to a solid challenge, Beaver Creek Golf Club obviously provides immense beauty, including the backdrop of Beaver Creek Mountain throughout the last nine holes. Golfers also often spot wildlife, including deer, fox and bear on the fairways. And the 15th hole, the club’s signature hole, features historical barns, backed by snowcapped mountain peaks. “(Most) everybody comes in saying, ‘it’s a beautiful course, but the course won,’” Parham said. that doesn’t mean it’s stuffy. In fact, staff members go out of their way to welcome families, especially those with kids. “Our club has a more youthful membership than others in our area, with 64 percent of our members younger than age 60,” said Heidi Cofelice, director of membership and club operations. “…Our membership continues to grow, and our appeal as the most family-friendly club in the community continues to expand.” Front tees provide a shorter, 5,293-yard course, and, after golfing, a children’s’ wading pool (surrounded by colorful wildflowers) complete a day of family fun. In addition to golf, kids can also learn tennis. “(The club) is a social connection, a family focus with yearround, world-class amenities,” commented Johannes and Rosana Faessler in the club’s brochure. “There’s always a familiar face and a staff that knows you by name. This is a club your whole family will enjoy for a lifetime.” For the first time this year, Sonnenalp offers a kids’
camp, called KidVentures. “We celebrate the energy, enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity of our young ones,” Cofelice said. “This camp is designed to be dynamic and meet the summer needs of your child.” The golf portion of the outdoor-based camp includes technical lessons and etiquette in a kid-friendly, playful way. For example, instructors dress up in Velcro costumes and run around while kids aim Velcro-wrapped balls at the moving targets. They also learn etiquette, from dressing properly to shouting, “Fore!” to warn unsuspecting players. The camp is open to 6- to 12-year-olds and holds spaces not just for club members, but also for kids in the community. It runs Monday through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and participants can choose which days they want to participate. And, in case kids miss it this year, Cofelice said the camp will happen next summer. Each camp week focuses on a specific theme. Kids can choose tennis lessons, swimming, arts and crafts, children’s literature

Outside of camp, kids’ movie nights coincide with every-other-Thursday-night couples’ tournaments, followed by dinner, so that parents get time out while kids have a blast. And, on Aug. 17, Kids Appreciation Day includes a pool party, s’mores making and a campout on the driving range. “We try to be more than a tee time,” Cofelice said. “We’re an opportunity of a lifetime.” Unforgettble weddings Soft candlelight glows above the hearth of the massive stone fireplace, which roars with the flames of romance. Wooden beams and columns create an intimacy in two rooms connected in an L-shape, where guests can both see and mingle with the wedding party’s head table. The Vista at Arrowhead, located in the Country Club of the Rockies Clubhouse, overlooks the ninth and 18th holes. Manicured greens meet stone terraces overflowing with flowers and hanging baskets of petunias. Abundant blooms line the bridge, which forms part of the golf course’s path, directly off the Vista’s terrace. To the east, a waterfall

welcome and service results in a word-of-mouth buzz. “We’ve had quite a few weddings booked from guests who attended weddings at Vista,” she said. “We have a very friendly atmosphere,” said Pentti Tofferi, general manager and COO of Country Club of the Rockies. “The caring that our staff offers to guests is second to none.” Vista easily accommodates 200-225 guests, and as an outdoor venue alone, the terrace seats 100. Weddings can range from casual — with leather and wood seats circling wooden tables and a “grill night” featuring passed appetizers like mini crab cakes and a buffet showcasing grilled halibut and filets — to semi-formal or formal, with linen tablecloths and served courses. “All in all, everything surpassed my expectations immensely, and I loved the entire night from beginning to end,” wrote Lindsey Blue McClintock to the Glennons. “I could not have pictured a more wonderful event.”

Why this is golf Heaven Here’s a rundown of High Country golf and why you should play each track

Hey, there’s a reason we live here and it’s not what most would expect. For some reason, the High Country is known for skiing and snowboarding. It’s best-kept secret is golf. We’re not being the chamber of commerce here. The thing is that it’s not just the altitude — which is still awesome and greatly appreciated when we play elsewhere. (“You mean my 7-iron doesn’t go 180 yards at sea level?) What makes High Country golf terrific is the variety of courses in Eagle and Summit counties. Playing here is not like going to Scottsdale, Ariz. (Make no mistake that we love Scottsdale. We love it even more in the winter when we can’t play here.) But if you’re playing in Arizona, you’re playing desert golf almost exclusively. Drive down Interstate 70, in Eagle County for about 15 minutes from Vail to Edwards, and you’ve hit golf courses that are traditional (Vail), have elevation change (Eagle-Vail), one that is designed by Robert Trent Jones (Beaver Creek), one that is traditional with a mountain twist (Sonnenalp) and the rejuvenated Cordillera complex with courses drawn up by Fazio, Hale Irwin and Jack Nicklaus. That’s only a sampling of the diversity of golf in style from the Raven in Summit County to Gypsum Creek at the west end of Eagle County.

RE d s k y r a n c h Probably the best of premium golf in Eagle County. The Fazio and Norman courses rotate daily for private and public (meaning staying at a Rock Resorts property) play. So if you’re planning on playing here, book two nights, so you can play both. Both courses are simply immaculate golf. There’s a reason both courses are on just about every “top 100” list you see. No holes run side-by-side, so it does seem like you’re the only group on the course. Absolutely pristine golf. Like Cordillera, these two courses are pricey, but you won’t be sorry. Semi-private.
a da m ' s r i b r a n c h The 285-acre Tom Weiskopfdesigned course has not one but 18 signature holes. The course — which puts an emphasis on indigenous landscaping — includes eight man-made lakes, a driving range, and practice chipping and putting areas. Ten holes play around or are adjacent to water. Though it's members only, golf memberships are open to both residents and nonresidents of the development. Membership tops out at 390.

E ag l e va i l Hello, elevation change. The course starts and ends with par-5s that start off cliffs, and there’s plenty of up and down in between. The course underwent a makeover to increase the pace of play, and it’s worked. (Disclaimer: This is the author’s home course, and 5-hour rounds are down on the weekends, in particular.) The talkers are Nos. 9 and 10. The first is a blind-tee-shot par-4 — leave the driver in the bag. And the latter is cliff-shot par-3. (Even if you are playing the white tees, take a drive up to the tips. Trust us.) Public.
E ag l e r a n c h Arnold Palmer in Eagle County and, as is typical with The King, this 18 is very playable for all types of golfers with five sets of tees ranging from 5,400-7,500 yards. The postcard shot is what we call “The Twins,” long side-by-side par-4s in Nos. 9 and 18. And, trust us, you’ll remember the back nine. Starting with the fiendish par-3 11th, which locals call “the shortest par-5 in the county,” Eagle Ranch’s back is tremendous. And if you can play hole Nos. 16-18 without a big number, you’ve earned your beverage of choice at the 19th. 62

In one of life’s great ironies, Vail is not mountain golf. It’s straight-away, what-you see-is-whatyou-get. That said, the views are tremendous — especially the stretch from Nos. 7-13 as you play toward the majestic Gore Range. (I hate the word majestic because it’s often overused. This is majestic, nonetheless.) It’s also the most walkable 18 in the High Country. Public. va i l g o l f c lu b

Welcome to Pete Dye links golf with one little twist. OK, it’s not so little. It’s called the mesa. Since Gypsum Creek flipped its nines this year, you get to warm up for 12 holes before you hit the mesa. No. 13 is a long, uphill par-5 that starts the stretch. Nos. 14-16 are surrounded by sagebrush. (By the way, if you find any Precepts or Noodles, they’re the author’s.) The good news is that you get to come down off the mesa on No. 17, a stunner of a dropping par-3. Public.

This 54-hole — 64, if you include the Short Course — complex offers a little bit of everything. The Valley Course is true Tom Fazio, messing with your mind off the tee. Is there a fairway out there? (Yes there is. Really). The bunkers are penal. (Stay out of them — helpful advice, we know.) Hale Irwin grew up in Colorado, so he knew how to do the Mountain Course. One of the unique facets of Irwin’s creation is the uphill hole. As strange as it sounds, there are plenty of holes in the High Country that do downhill or slightly uphill, but the Cordillera Mountain course does real uphill. Good fun. Jack Nicklaus’ Summit Course is golfing on top of the world. If it’s in your budget, this is must-play Eagle County golf. Private, but open to some Vail and Beaver Creek resort guests.

The first three holes provide some serious “holy cow” factor, playing through the woods and along Beaver Creek, but the other 15 are not pushovers by any means. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. did a number here with tremendous green complexes. If you’re serious about your score, make hay on the front and hang on during the final nine. This course loops down and then back up toward the resort, playing much longer on the back. Whatever your approach, this is a tough test of golf, but a very scenic one. Public play during shoulder season. Open to Beaver Creek guests only during the summer.
