With the writing of this article the season is winding down and we closed out about seven trips this year across Colorado and Wyoming. We would all wish for more snow but that just did not happen. We all hoped to have enough moisture to feed the lakes for the summer boating activities and water for lawns. My CSA responsibilities have been enjoyable with no regrets, I am now into my final term or last two years. The executive board continues to be a team of strong members who work well with one another and the many clubs across the state. A little know fact about CSA is that this organization has put together a very successful snow program in conjunction with the Colorado State Parks organization headed up by Tom Metsa. What a pleasure it is to work with Tom and his entire staff.

Sneak Peak Denver Colorado March 24, 2015. If you missed this event you did not miss much other than what Polaris has released in the sled line up and the Slingshot. The AXYS® RMK® features a patented, raised chassis that increases clearance and reduces drag to keep you on top of the snow. This new chassis, purpose built for mountain riding, allows for improved sidehilling, faster and easier climbing, and instantaneous lift allowing the sled to pop onto the snow faster. The carbon fiber overstructure offers reduced weight without compromising strength. New, taller spindles for 2016 increases clearance to reduce drag. We can only hope that if this is a huge success than other manufactures such as Yamaha will follow, maybe I can modify my Nytro or not. Lastly, I did enjoy looking at the Polaris Slingshot a two seater three wheel machine rated as a motorcycle. An update on a fellow long time Mile Hi club member who was injured this season; Bob Scott. He is going to be moved to Colorado Acute Long Term Hospital 3-25-15 located at 1690 Meade St, Denver, CO 80204. He is conscious, however has suffered traumatic injuries both to his leg and head. Bob has been an avid snowmobiler and has spent the last 50 years riding and supporting the sport. His contribution, positive and upbeat personality is what we all love about him. He lights up a room with his presence. This accident is a life changing event and he will no longer be able to snowmobile. We are taking up a collection for him and his family. If you are interested in either sending a monetary donation (check written out to Bob

Scott) or a letter/card to Bob and his family - Please address those to Toni Boettcher at P.O. Box 279, Conifer, CO 80433-0279. The donations (monetary or letter/card) will be taken to him and his wife weekly. Thank you for supporting and caring for this wonderful man. In closing we had some great times meeting new folks this year once again and had some fun rides throughout the mountains. A special thanks to a very talented Yamaha team person in Wyoming who made wonderful modifications to my sled. No names here because he is already over worked and I would like to keep him to just our family. I bleed Yamaha Blue and love the products. Attached pictures are of my wonderful wife Sheri who loves the sport and takes great care of me and of course one of my boys with shades on.

District 5 S&W Adventure Riders Jack Welch The 2015 week long ride started with everyone arriving in Island Park, Idaho, on Saturday , February 27 and ready to ride Sunday, the 28th. We rode the Island Park area including the Mountain Jefferson area then moved over to West Yellowstone. In West Yellowstone we rode the Two Tops Mountain area and thanks to hiring local guides had a chance to ride many remote areas too. Our final stop was Alpine Wyoming. We rode the Grey’s River and Blind Bull areas and took time to stop at the Box Y for fuel and hot drinks. The week ended after our Saturday night Banquet on the 7th of March. (Note several members of the club with myself as non-commercial guide toured Yellowstone National Park on Sunday, March the 8th, see my other article for details).

Yellowstone Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program

My Chance to Experience the NEW Program and lead a Group to Old Faithful Jack Welch, Vice President, BlueRibbon Coalition

On Sunday, March 8 I had the opportunity to become a Non-Commercial Guide under the new Yellowstone Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access(N-CGSA). This program allows an individual to apply for a permit at the Recreation.gov website. Next, after making a successful application, I paid the use and reservation fee, for a total of $46. The next step is to take and pass the online “Yellowstone Snowmobile Education Course”. This course is required for each operator of each BAT snowmobile. Note:

The required BAT snowmobiles can be rented at each gate from a concessionaire or you can provide your own. In the case of the South Gate, we rented from Scenic Safaris. They are located at the South Gate and can be reached 307-7348898. The riders in my non-commercial group, which can total only five machines, were Janet Feigelson and Geoff Inglis from Steamboat Springs, Chuck Ramsey from Wellington and Jeff Wiese from Colorado Springs. Here is a summary of our day’s adventure. We started our day early with a drive from Alpine, Wyoming to Flagg Ranch. At Flagg we checked in with Scenic Safaris and got suited up for the adventure. Next we had a short safety talk by the Scenic Safaris representative who covered the operation of the four stroke BAT 2015 Ski

Doo machines. He reviewed the hand signals we would use as we toured the Park. Note, Scenic Safaris provided us with the Park Service’s recommended safety gear. The first stop as we entered the Park on the way to Old Faithfull was the South Entrance Ranger Station. At the station we received our formal permit from Ranger John McCudy who also gave us a final briefing on what to expect as we traveled to Old Faithful. We left the Ranger Station ready for the adventure to begin! Before I start the account of the 110 mile round trip trek, it should be noted that Chuck was the only rider that had visited the Park before by snowmobile in the winter. The rest of the group was about to see first and why see ‘Guide’ PAGE 5------------------------------------------------------>

the snowmobile as transportation to Old Faithful is a special experience. In addition, with myself as a very knowledgeable guide, I have ridden the Park many times in the last 40 years and my knowledge would add to the adventure! The weather was cool and crisp, the trail was, of course, the groomed summer highway and it was very smooth. However, we saw that snowcoaches can leave ruts and had to watch for them. As we headed for our next stop, the Lewis River Falls, the riders got their first taste of the beautiful scenic vistas of the Park as we traveled along the rim of the Lewis River Canyon. They also saw evidence of the historic 1988 Yellowstone fires. At Lewis Falls the folks from Steamboat Springs commented that so far the snowmobile was a great way to experience the Park and looked forward to the rest of the day. Also, one of the riders, Jeff from Colorado Springs, asked why the snowmobiles were limited to the Park’s speed limit of only 35 mph? I pointed out to the Jeff and the group that the 35 mph speed limit was all that was needed to cover the distances between the Park’s special places and that the new snowmobile BAT standards only allowed that speed. In addition I pointed out that the snowmobile is just one of the forms of transport in Yellowstone for winter access. The group commented that this trip in the Park would be the major highlight of this year’s winter experiences! We continued on to the Old Faithful area with a short rest stop at West Thumb, and the next stop was the Yellowstone Lake overlook. During our stop at overlook the group got to see their first snowcoach and asked about how it fit into the Yellowstone transportation system. I explained that it was another form of access to the Park. The folks from Steamboat commented they like the snowmobile better! We continued on to Old Faithful. The timing was perfect! We arrived with just a few minutes before the Old Faithful Geyser went off. When the geyser finished it was lunch time. We went to the Geyser Grill for a quick lunch. During the lunch I was asked why anti groups want to eliminate access by snowmobile to Yellowstone. I explained the issues and how the snowmobile community had solved the many issues presented by the antis. Time was growing late. However, I had planned a special longer stop at West Thumb to tour several thermal features on foot. We also had time to talk to the Ranger at the Warming Hut. After the tour we returned to our snowmobiles and started back to Flagg Ranch. The last stop before leaving Yellowstone Park is a very popular stop because of the large Yellowstone entrance sign, a great place for group pictures. After picture taking we kept pushing and arrived back at Flagg at 4:30 p.m. After filling the Ski Doos with fuel we started the Suburban ride back to Jackson, WY. The entire group, and especially the folks from Steamboat Springs, agreed that “closing snowmobile access to Yellowstone would just not be right because they felt that the snowmobile provided the best form of transportation to see the natural wonders of Yellowstone Park!” They all agreed that “Snowmobiling to Old Faithful was something they will long remember!” And going with a non-commercial guide Jack Welch, who had ridden the Park many times, was a very positive experience. A final note: As stated earlier I have been riding in Yellowstone Park in winter starting in 1969 and have only missed one year. This trip covered in this article is the FIRST time I have traveled from the South Gate to Old Faithful and encountered only two Rangers on snowmobiles. What a special experience! Try that in the summer. Please remember the BlueRibbon dedicated website site of www.saveyellowstonepark.com for the latest information on Yellowstone winter access.

March Meeting at Tommyknocker’s Tavern

Well, another snowmobile season has come to a close in the Creede area. Despite a lack of snow in December and January, February came through with a week of good snowfall in the high country. That one storm enabled the club to ride through midMarch. The club finished the season with a ride on Snow Mesa and the Lake City trail system. We had good participation on all rides during the season, averaging eleven riders each time. Our March meeting was held at Tommyknocker’s Tavern where we all enjoyed a great pork BBQ dinner prior to getting down to business. The last meeting of the season will be a pizza party at JC and Renee Banks’ home on Deep Creek Road. This is always the best meeting of the season thanks to JC and his hand-crafted pizza. The meeting will take place April 16 at 6 p.m. Members are asked to bring pizza toppings, salads, or desserts. Please contact Leslie Dustin at 719-658-0184 if you plan on attending. The final event for this season will be a highway cleanup sometime in May. We will schedule it after Freemons is open so we can finish off with burgers and ice cream. Stay tuned for details. Until next year, play safe and be happy!

San Juan Sledders Curt Larsen The San Juan Sledders enjoyed an active March: We had our last club ride of the season at Hay Camp. Despite our meager snow conditions the ride was enjoyed by five club members and two guests. There was about six inches of recent snow with some good jumping opportunities. The March club meeting was held on the 12th at Chavalos Mexican Restaurant. Dinner and fellowship started at 6 p.m. with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Andrea Jeter, Dianne Larsen and Curt Larsen were elected to the positions of Vice President, Secretary and Club Reporter respectively. The meeting included a report for an Avalanche Safety class as well as the introduction to Ryan Crabb from Colorado State Parks & Wildlife. Ryan spoke of the CPW mission and upcoming meetings requesting public input. On March 15, the San Juan Sledders and the Silverton Snowmobile Club jointly held our yearly Special Needs Ride. We had a beautiful day for this event at Molas. It was sunny and warm and well attended. There were about 20 club members (from both clubs) present and also about 20 guests. We provided snowmobile rides, snow cat rides, and a delicious lunch of burgers, hot dogs and chili. This event was enjoyed by everyone! With our low snow depth this year, we were unable to use all of our grooming hours. We have about 100 hours left on our contract that we probably will not be able to use.

The guys cooking for the end of season BBQ at the Trailhead of Wolf Creek Pass.

Sleds and groomer parked at the trailhead.

Well it looks like the end of riding season is upon us. All the trails in the Pagosa Springs area are bare with the exception of Wolf Creek Pass. I was just able to finish my grooming contract on Sunday, March 29 with lots of mushy snow at the summit of Wolf Creek Pass. The snow has melted three to four feet in the past seven days and when I finished grooming this morning it was already fifty-two degrees. The big melt is on even at 11,000 feet. There were several snow machines out riding over the past weekend and both Outfitting Company’s that are permitted to use Wolf Creek Pass were doing their last tours of the season. 3rd Generation Outfitters owned and operated by Forest and Jackie Bramwell sponsored an end of the season BBQ at the Wolf Creek trailhead on Sunday, March 29 with several families and friends riding in to have some burgers and dogs. It was a nice event with bright sunshine and temperatures in the low sixties. Everyone was talking how bad the snow pack is with only 72% of normal snowfall in the south San Juan Mountains this year. Hopefully the 2016 winter season will show us a better snow pack and riding conditions. The last club meeting for the 2014/2015 season will be at Boss Hoggs Restaurant Thursday April 9 starting at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is always welcome so bring a friend and see what’s being planned for the 2015/2016 riding season.

Michael Jonikas, Polaris Industries Inc. VP, Snowmobiles and Slingshot, Retiring

Michael Jonikas Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) in March announced that Michael (Mike) Jonikas, Vice President of Snowmobiles and Slingshot, will be retiring in May of this year. Over the past fifteen years, Mike Jonikas has been a key leader for Polaris and the powersports industry, and has made significant contributions to both. Jonikas began his Polaris career in 2000 as a Marketing Director in the Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) division, then went on to become the first General Manager of Side-bySide (SxS) vehicles, Vice President of Sales & Corporate Marketing and On Road, and finally VP of Snowmobile and Slingshot. Under his guidance, Polaris’ snowmobile business has reached new heights in performance - both from the vehicles themselves and from a sales perspective - while his work with Slingshot resulted in one of the most successful product launches in Polaris history. “Mike has been a passionate, dedicated and highly skilled business leader for Polaris over the past 15 years. During that period, he led and grew each of our vehicle businesses and transformed our sales and corporate marketing team, contributing significantly to our success,” said Scott Wine, Polaris Chairman & CEO. “Quite simply, Mike worked tirelessly to make Polaris a bigger, better and stronger company, and our gratitude and best wishes go out to Mike as he embarks on his new, more relaxing, adventures.” “I have been privileged to work with Mike for the past 15 years,” said Bennett Morgan, Polaris President and COO. “It is a fact that

Mike’s efforts played a significant part in making Polaris the company it is today. We owe him a debt of gratitude, not only for his contributions to our business but also for the passion and pride he brought to every leadership challenge we set before him, no matter how daunting.” “I have worked with so many great people during my time at Polaris, and it is their passion and commitment that I will miss the most,” remarked Jonikas. “Though I was present as Polaris broke through the $2, $3 and $4 billion revenue barriers, launched any number of groundbreaking products, and became a truly global business, it is the day-to-day interaction with the best team in Powersports that always inspired me. As I leave, I am confident that the company is in great hands, and I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish.” Wine continued, “It is never easy to replace someone of Mike’s caliber, but we have a deep reservoir of strong leaders ready to tackle such challenges, many of whom Mike trained himself. We have developed a thorough succession plan for his role, and details will be forthcoming.” Criag Scanlon

Wolf, Scanlon Assume P&L Responsibility for Snowmobiles, Slingshot Respectively Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) has announced that the responsibilities of retiring Vice President of Snowmobiles and Slingshot, Mike Jonikas, will be divided between two roles reporting directly to President and Chief Operating Officer Bennett Morgan. Chris Wolf, currently General Manager, Snowmobiles, will

Chris Wolf

be promoted to Vice President of that business, and Craig Scanlon will fill the role of Vice President, Slingshot. “Mike’s departure presents us with an opportunity to leverage our incredibly deep pool of talent and further develop two outstanding performers,” said Scott Wine, Polaris Chairman and CEO. “Expanding Chris Wolf’s role into Vice President, Snowmobiles, allows him to continue the work he and Mike did spearheading the renaissance of our Snowmobile division. And by promoting Craig Scanlon to Vice President, Slingshot, we apply the experience of one of our largest business’ chief architects toward leading a new business with substantial runway.” Chris Wolf started with Polaris in 2002, rising through roles in sales, service, and product management before advancing to Director of Snowmobiles in 2011 and subsequently being promoted to General Manager, Snowmobiles in 2014. Chris graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Craig Scanlon has been with Polaris since 2004, rising through a variety of Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) line management and sales positions prior to assuming the Director, ORV Sales and Marketing role in 2010. Scanlon was further promoted to General Manager, Side-by-Side vehicles in 2012. He graduated from the University of Maryland- College Park with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
