Clayton Taecker was 76 years young when he passed due to a snowmobile accident on a poker run sponsored by the North Park Snow Snakes and Colorado Blizzards on March 2, 2013, The club has decided to rename the poker run as the Clayton Taecker Memorial Poker Run for the next 5 years. Speaking of wilderness and on a lighter (but very important issue), a team of CSA members will be returning to Washington DC to “TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT SNOWMOBILING” campaign. This is an annual event where we are there with about 20 other states to have a day of meetings, seminars, and presentations to our Legislative Staff. This will occur April 20 – 23 (about a week or so away). We will update you with latest news and information as it relates to our love for snowmobiling. I hope to see many of you at our Quarterly Meeting/ Grant Presentation/Planning Meeting on Mother’s Day weekend (May 9-10). Good luck to everyone and enjoy what is left of your season!

Hi Everyone – Where did snowmobile season go? I know some of you are still out there riding, but I am what we call a ‘snow snob’ and prefer not to ride in the sticky spring snow. Bill and I are up here in Walden this weekend and it looks like rabbit ears is getting more fresh snow. Several people from North Dakota are coming in tomorrow to enjoy the results of the incoming snow. Bill and I went to the Pink Ribbon Ride which was in March at Grand Lake. The administrator from the PRR told us they really need to get more attendance if we want to keep this group coming in. We are trying to assist them in finding another location for next year and hope maybe a different location will bring more attendance. Our club is getting geared up for ATVing this summer and starting to plan events for the club members. President, Mish Clancey, is very good at keeping us informed of events in the area we can attend. Have a great summer and looking forward to seeing everyone again next season!
Hi from Bill, I would like to thank everyone for their support the last few years that I have been District 1 rep. I have enjoyed the challenge and look forward to helping out again in that capacity. My new duties take on doing the raffle for CSA with the help of Debbie and Randy Miller. This weekend finds a lot of the club at the Roost the Butte event, some participating and some are spectators. It is snowing on Rabbit Ears pass this Sunday and I expect to see ride reports tomorrow from the lucky ones who went. I go in for knee surgery Friday so I am not riding this weekend. Don’t need to hurt an arm or hip just before surgery, so this ends my season of riding. It truthfully has been disappointing season, certainly remember others with more riding in good snow. We went a lot this season but most of the time we needed more snow. The Colorado Blizzards have one more meeting for this season before switching to the ATV mode for the summer. Tyler’s BCA is still holding avalanche awareness activities for a couple more months. Prime Avalanche Time so everyone be extra careful as you enjoy this spring riding and snows. SAFE RIDING, ENJOY THE SUMMER SEE YOU IN THE FALL

Thanks to all the clubs who participated in our Sled Warriors challenge. Routt Powder Riders committed to a contribution of $1,000 and to match up to $5,000 from the clubs across the State. At this time, we do not know the total amount clubs donated but we will be sure to let you know in a future Snow Scoop. We also want to thank all the clubs who submitted comments on the Rabbit Ears Winter Parking Scoping Document. We are continuing to work with the Forest Service on expanding the Muddy Creek and Dumont lots. We have been told that the Forest Service Supervisor has made parking on Rabbit Ears a priority. We are watching the snow melt with the extremely warm temperatures over the last few weeks and regret that there may be only a few more weekends of riding left. If you are still riding - RIDE SAFELY!

Grand Lake Trail Groomers Tom Mason
Here in Grand Lake it is fast approaching mud season. We are reluctantly putting our snow machines to bed for the off season. Trail Blazers held our End of Season get together and elections April 6 at the Columbine Clubhouse. Two new Board members were elected. Joe Kelley was elected Treasurer and Ronald Brown was elected as At-large board member. John Amerman was re-elected as Vice President. We would like to thank Mike Ingle and Bill Adams for their many years of distinguished service to the Trail Blazers and to helping advance the sport! After the meeting, we adjourned to the Grand Lake Lanes to enjoy pizza and deviled eggs. Over the off season, we will come together to clean up our mile of adopted Highway 34 and plan our riding schedule for next winter. After the last two winters, we are all ready for an “above average” snowfall. Until then, I hope everyone has a great summer and fall!

Friday’s Ride to Land’s End
April - May 2013

Eighteen members of Creede’s snowmobile club, the Snow Country Explorers, ventured onto Grand Mesa for three fun-filled days of snowmobiling in early March. Light snow was falling Friday morning on Slumgullion and the Grand Mesa, but not enough to make travel hazardous. What the snow did bring us was four inches of fresh powder to ride on Friday afternoon. I like to take this opportunity We rode out to Land’s End under sunny skies to introduce myself to you as the with warm temperatures. The return trip to Thunder Mountain Lodge was via the Flat Tops trail. This is an alternate route that is marked but not groomed, offering more of a challenge to ride. Everyone agreed afterwards that they had a great time and enjoyed the challenge. It was a good thing that the SnoKrusers were there to lead us since we probably wouldn’t have taken up the challenge without their lead. Thunder Mountain Lodge provided a pizza party Saturday night to 18 very tired but happy snowmobilers. Dinner conversation centered around the wonderful time everyone was having on the Grand Mesa: great trails, excellent riding, wonderful weather, outstanding scenery, and good fellowship. Many of us talked about a return trip next year. Sunday morning dawned with the promise of snow. While several of the group took off for Creede, others of us ventured out to ride to Land’s End again. By the time we were ready to call it quits and return to the Lodge, snow was falling on the Mesa. We decided it was time for the rest of us to load up and head home to Creede. Again the drive wasn’t too bad except over Slumgullion. The Snow Country Explorers want to thank the Delta SnoKrusers for their help in making our trip so fantastic. Special thanks to SnoKrusers Donna Ankenbauer, Mike Ankenbauer, Steve Foster, Bob, and Matt. Another big thanks to everyone at Thunder Mountain Lodge that made our stay comfortable and fed us way too much good food. Also thanks for the fabulous lunch and view at Vega Lodge. The club holds meetings once a month and schedules rides regularly during the snow season. Any club event is open to anyone, and everyone is welcome. North Fork Snowmobile Club
Hi everyone. I would like to start my report with a thank you to Wes Spore for writing the club’s report for the March/April hard copy Snow Scoop issue for me. I had to be out of state for several weeks due to a family emergency. I would also like to thank all my family and friends for their support. It was much appreciated. We had our 2013 NFSC Avalanche Awareness Training January 11 and 12. There were five North Fork Snowmobile Club members, fourteen SnoKrusers and three non-member snowmobilers for a total of twentythree participants. This is the first time in three years we haven’t had any snowshoers or skiers take advantage of our training. Everyone met Friday evening at the Community Center in Cedaredge for a chili supper. Then Randy Engle, State Trails Coordinator for Colorado Parks and Wildlife gave a three hour lesson on recognizing avalanche terrain and dangerous conditions along with search and rescue techniques. Bonnie Petersen, Lindsay Petersen, Ryan Marah and Dianna Brown won the Back Country Access Stealth 240 probe door prizes. Lucas Dill and Chris Volgamore both won Back Country Access Chugach EXT shovel door prizes. The next day, rescue training started at 9 a.m. at the Mesa Top parking lot with the thermometer setting at -19 F degrees. Randy already had dummies buried under the snow, some with beacons, some without. Eleven hardy souls showed up despite the cold conditions. They learned the basics of Avalanche Locater Beacons, Avalanche Probing, and how to dig a person out moving snow the fastest and smartest. After practicing with beacons in the parking lot the group moved out on the snow and trees. The participants were divided into three groups and tried their skills at finding and digging out the skillfully hidden “victims”. The thermometer sat at -15 F degrees when we finished up at 12:45 p.m. Delta SnoKruser member, Debbie Fandrich won the Back Country Access Tracker Beacon and went home smiling to warm up. We would like to thank Colorado State Parks and Back Country Access for their help and support. Our 33rd Annual Poker Run was held on February 9th on Black Mesa. Upon arriving at the trailhead on Crystal Creek, the early morning volunteers found seven inches of new snow with snow continuing to fall, poor visibility and very slick road conditions. But true to the tenacity of snowmobilers, we had a great turn out with participants arriving from the North Fork, Gunnison, Delta, Cedaredge, Montrose, Norwood, Grand Valley, Buena Vista, Denver, Pueblo and New Mexico. A total of 191 hands were sold. High hand went to Sandy Humbard (New Mexico) Low hand to Andy Dobie (Gunnison), Second High hand to Sherry Robley (Buena Vista), Third High hand to Melisa English (Montrose) and Fourth High hand to Don Leon (Cedaredge). We had a very successful event due to the loyalty of the participants that come year after year, to our club members that volunteer countless hours, and to Joe Webb for facilitating everything. On February 27 Brian McCall, CAIC Forecaster in Aspen, Ruth Spalding, Safety Officer for the GMUG District of the USFS and Joe Oglesby, Avalanche Awareness Coordinator for the North Fork Snowmobile Club went to the Hotchkiss High School in Hotchkiss and the Plateau Valley High School in Collbran and gave an hour talk to the students. This is the first year they have gone to Collbran. They have gone to Hotchkiss, Delta and Paonia High Schools

in years past. Ruth began the meeting stating that Colorado leads the Nation in avalanche fatalities with snowmobilers leading the list. Brian McCall then gave a slide presentation with an in-depth analysis of terrain, snow and weather leading up to avalanche conditions that kill every winter. Brian emphasized that the brain is a valuable piece of safety equipment. You need to know how to recognize and avoid avalanche hazards. Before traveling into the back country, McCall recommended everyone ask themselves a series of questions. 1. Is the snow unstable? 2. Could we trigger an avalanche by being on this steep slope? Are we in avalanche terrain? Everyone actively involved in winter sports in the back country need to be thinking about the possibility of avalanches. A quote from Brian McCall: “If conditions look unsafe, come back another day”. The talk was followed by a question and answer period. We are grateful to Brian McCall and CAIC and Ruth Spalding and USFS for taking the time to come and talk to the students of these schools so these kids will have some knowledge before heading off to the back country. Thanks to Joe Oglesby for coordinating these talks every year. Avalanche forecasts are available seven days a week during the winter at Colorado.gov/avalanche. We had our last meeting for the 2012/2013 season on April 4. Wes Spore and Joe Webb were re-elected as President and Vice President for the 2013/2014 season by acclamation. Susie Mautz was nominated for Secretary and Donna Linman for Treasurer. Both were elected. Congratulations to all of you and a big thank you. Thanks to Linda Wilson, outgoing Treasurer for a great job and to Helen Hicks for filling in as temporary Secretary for the last half of the 2012/2013 season. Our first meeting for the 2013/2014 season will be held at the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge on Thursday, October 3, 2013, and the first Thursday of every month thereafter through April 2014. New members for this season were: Tom an Susan Alvey of Hotchkiss, Donald Briggs of Crawford, Louie Chesnik of Paonia, David and Moglie Cooper of Carbondale, Lance and Sylvia Goss of Paonia, Ed and Jamie Hunter of Crawford, Donnie and Jennifer Kendall of Paonia, Bill and Pattie Kolb of Hotchkiss, John and Susanne marta of Hotchkiss, Mark Miller of Delta, Henry C. Pipher of Pueblo and Mike and Jodi Pitt of Hotchkiss. It was decided at the last meeting to have road clean-up day on April 27. Everyone is to meet at Robert and Margaret Pearce’s at 10 a.m. and meet back there for a potluck lunch. The club prepared the very popular meal of smothered steak, mashed potatoes, corn, salad and dessert for the Elks Friday night dinner on March 22 with the proceeds going to the Elks for the use of space at the lodge for our club meetings. Thanks to all the members that cooked, cleaned, baked, served and donated food for the dinner. It was a huge success with approximately sixty-five meals sold. The Elks personnel were very appreciative of how clean our members left the kitchen. It is Monday, April 8 and Colorado is expecting a major snow storm to hit today and tomorrow with an expected snow fall of 4-18 inches of heavy wet snow in many of the Colorado Mountains. If we get as much as the weather forecasters are predicting, we might have a great weekend of snowmobiling. That is if you haven’t already put your machine up for the season. Hopefully there won’t be the fast warm-up they are calling for which could mean a lot of flooding and mudslides. However, we will take whatever moisture we can get. I understand this has been a better winter in most areas than we had last year but that we are still below average. So don’t stop doing the snow dance yet. We need a lot of spring run-off to fill up those reservoirs that were severely depleted last year. Black Mesa had six feet of snow at the Baldy Mountain Marker the end of February and as of last weekend (April 6th) still had a solid six feet. Grooming for the season ended the last of March. J.T. Hotchkiss came in sixth place at the Jackson Hole Hill Climb and missed placing by .05 of a second. Great job J.T. I didn’t get this article finished yesterday. The big storm hit here sometime before daylight and has been snowing all day. The inches are really piling up. I guess our snowmobile season isn’t quite over yet. Hope everyone is getting tons of snow today and that it doesn’t melt until after the weekend so we all have a chance to get out and sled. Thanks to all the snowmobile enthusiasts that volunteer hours and hours to promote and protect this wonderful winter sport. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all our military personnel that make sacrifices every day to protect our freedoms. God Bless You All. See you next season.

Aixam Mega’s quadricycles are four-wheeled, on-road enclosed vehicles characterized by their light weight, low speed and ability, in many countries, to be operated without a full automobile driver’s license. Founded in 1983, the company has a history of strong financial performance and profitable growth, achieving approximately $110 (US) million in sales in 2012 through a distribution network of more than 400 European dealers. The Aixam brand offers a range of diesel-fueled and electric passenger quadricycles including sedan, SUV and sport styles. The Mega brand offers electric and diesel-fueled light duty commercial vehicles. “We’re excited about today’s announcement and the opportunity to work with a leading global company like Polaris,” said Philippe Colançon, Aixam Mega business unit President. “Joining Polaris provides us with technology, expertise and resources to make continued investments in our business, while accelerating profitable growth through new customer opportunities. We look forward not only to what we can learn from Polaris, but what we can contribute to Polaris through our expertise and experience.” Terms of the transaction were not disclosed; however, the transaction will be funded through the use of Polaris’ cash on hand. The transaction is expected to be slightly accretive to Polaris’ earnings per share in 2013 after acquisition costs.

Team Arctic Riders Win Pro Open and Pro Stock at Clash of Nations
Tucker Hibbert and Martin Moland are Victorious It’s been a season of snocross domination for Team Arctic’s Tucker Hibbert. After winning his sixth-consecutive X Games gold medal and then clinching the 2013 ISOC Pro Open National Championship, Tucker Hibbert solidified the season with a victory at Sweden’s Clash of Nations Super Snowcross event. With 16 riders in the main event, including Logan Christian from Christian Bros. Racing, Hibbert ripped a monstrous holeshot and ran away with the win, while Logan Christian charged hard through the entire race finishing with a strong 3rd place podium. Hibbert said, “It was awesome to come back to Sweden, take a win and finish the season healthy. It’s a great feeling flying across the world and having fans cheer for you. I’m always surprised by the amount of support and excitement from fans in Scandinavia.” In the Pro Stock class, 16 year old Martin Moland from Norway had an outstanding win. Moland’s Clash of Nations win came shortly after he was crowned the 2013 bronze-medalist in the Norwegian snocross championship. Luva Racing’s Alexander Berglund of Sweden rounded out the podium for Arctic Cat with a solid 3rd place finish. Team Arctic Race Manager, Mike Kloety said, “Team Arctic has had a very successful 2013 snocross season and these wins and podium finishes at Clash of Nations make it an even better one! It’s truly fantastic to see the highest level of enthusiasm these snowmobile race fans have for Team Arctic.”
