District 3 Trail Blazers Tom Mason What a great season it has been! Lots of snow, good friends and great riding. We are winding this one down, but it is not over yet. Rentals are done for the season and grooming is all but finished. Trail Blazers have one event left before summer and that is the April meeting and election. We will be meeting at the Columbine Lake Clubhouse at 5 p.m. on April 5. After the business, we will enjoy a potluck dinner. I hope we will see you there! It is not too late to get some spring riding in. Conditions here are still good and may hold on for weeks if we are lucky. If your thoughts have already turned to warm weather pursuits, I can understand that. It has been a long season for a change. If you want to get in a last ride or two, come on up!

Well, we are winding up another year of great riding and memories. I hope you have been blessed with good health, wealth, and happiness! With the year ending, we have a few new members that were voted in positions by the clubs back in January and they will assume their new jobs on May 1. I would like to welcome: Treasurer: Katie Himes (Mesa), District 4 Rep: Tony Zancanella (Glenwood Springs), District 6 Rep: JR Halvorson (Leadville), District 8 Rep: Ken Simpson (Cedaredge). Also, I would like to thank the outgoing people that have served in the respective position for their time and commitment to CSA and snowmobiling: David Falk (Treasurer), Stephen Burns (District 4), Carrie Kroshel (District 6), and Steve Foster (District 8). I am preparing to go to Washington DC to our annual fly-in to meet with the other State Members of ACSA this weekend, meetings with various agencies on Monday, and the Colorado Delegates on Tuesday. This has proven to be extremely beneficial for snowmobiling to identify issues and to educate our Delegation in DC about those issues. We have developed two-way lines of communication with many of these Delegates throughout the year to discuss issues and provide input to help guide the legislative process that our government uses. The progress over the last 5 years has been very noticeable and rewarding with our team of Land Use/Access consisting of Scott Jones and Janelle Kukuk that work relentlessly to our benefit of identifying issues and attacking them in a constructive and beneficial way to promote our sport and given rights. Also, please be aware that this your last notice from me about the opportunity to see what goes on at the International Snowmobile Congress that will be in our back yard (in Keystone). Take advantage if you can and we’ll see you at our CSA BOD meeting in Glenwood on May 17.

Leslie Dustin The Snow Country Explorers ended a fantastic 2013-2014 season mid-March when Bob Kukuk, our groomer, pulled the poles on the last of our trail system here in the Creede area. The club had a total of 11 rides averaging 9 snowmobiles per ride. Only three scheduled club rides were canceled because of adverse weather conditions. Overall a great season! In addition to the club activities, 12 club members made an additional 3-day trip to Black Mesa outside of Gunnison. Conditions were perfect and it was fun to ride a new area. One club member said that it was fun riding “park after park after park.” Thanks to the many club members that hosted meetings this season: Kukuks (annual BBQ), Ellisons (Freemon’s hamburger fry), Dustins (chili dinner and valentine treats), Cruses (gumbo dinner), Blackfords (lasagna dinner)’, and Banks (pizza party). The club will have one more meeting on Thursday, May 8. This will be a pizza party at JC and Renee Banks’ home on Deep Creek Road. This gathering is becoming an institution, and we love the pizza the JC makes in his home-made brick pizza oven. As the date gets closer, details will be emailed to club members and posted on the CSA website Snow Country Explorer home page. So until next season, enjoy your summer and start thinking snow around Thanksgiving!

Miller, for keeping our trails safe for us throughout the season. It had been about seven years since we had demonstrated how to build a snow cave, so Dennis Shepherd offered our group “snow cave construction.” Tim Boyles, Bob Monro and David Pryce proved to be great snow cavers. They made pretty slow progress at first working like moles or gophers. Then, Bob promoted all to “Snow Excavation Engineers” making really great progress. When finished, Tim relaxed in the snow
cave with candlelight. We showed that you can do this without any other equipment than what you would normally have on an outing; however, a small packable shovel would be a real asset to carry with you all the time. It’s remarkable how strong snow is. With three men standing on top of the snow cave, it didn’t budge! Hopefully, we can add safety awareness and avalanche classes next season. Everything is better in the mountains! As Twin Pines Motor Sports Recreational Rentals articulates, “When you’re in South Fork, you’ll have the urge to feel the crisp mountain air rushing by you, the urge to discover new and exciting places, and the urge to picnic where little or no people ever have!” Snowmobiling was a lifetime experience that our Texas friends will never forget. They rented local from Kurtis and Carla Sears at Twin Pines and rode with our club. Our club looks forward to all of our visitors! We had great days with new fresh powder in March as we blazed the trails through the trees. We said “farewell” to Elwood Pass as
5
the groomers got the trail ready for the miners to get to the Summitville Mining Area. We truly enjoyed the frequent contours at Elwood Pass and the play areas at Fox Mountain. Eleven snowmobiles enjoyed our last ride with magnificent surroundings at Tucker Ponds and Molina Park located between South Fork and the Wolf Creek Ski Area. We call it Tucker Ponds, because we pass frozen ponds along the way that are great fishing areas during the summer. Some of our daring comrades tried their own stunts and ended up “top down- tracks up”. As usual, “Our Snow Queens” stay on the trails and wait for the guys to dig out their damaged machines from unforeseen places. How fast can you afford to go? If you happen to run into a tree or two, the Twin Pines mechanic is the place for you. This season has come to an end too quickly. It was grand riding with Scott Bahr, Sigrid Baugh, Steve and Linda Cross, Darrel Gillispie, Gary and Tommy Goetz, Ken and Kim Krahn, Curt Miller, Kent Miller, Wayne and Linda Moulds, Rod Odom, Steve Paradeau, Jim Patterson (my husband), Dwayne and Edna Powers, Roland Schwery, Linda Statum and Vicky Campbell, Lloyd Thiesfeld, and so many others including visitors. Be safe and enjoy the rest of the year… And, as Roy Rogers and Dale Evans would sing, “Happy trails to you and keep smilin’ till we meet again!”

Season Review from Southern Colorado Happy spring fellow sledders! I hope you all enjoyed your fair share of fresh snow this winter. While some of our lower elevation riding areas were low on snow, it was a good year a little higher up. Curt, Horace, and Bob did a great job in the groomers to keep the trail systems nice and smooth. Hopefully the spring storms will continue and allow us to ride for a few more months, but more importantly deliver that much needed moisture! This winter marked the second season of operation for my wife Jesse and I’s snowmobiling business, Mountain Skillz. Our mission is to responsibly and respectfully promote snowmobiling, safety, and awareness while providing our clients with individualbased instruction and information to enhance their mountain snowmobiling experience. This season we conducted three snowmobiler specific Avalanche Safety Courses with our partners from the Wolf Creek Avalanche School and Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness. The second aspect of Mountain Skillz is personalized technical mountain riding instruction. We are happy to work with riders from beginneradvanced skill level and everything in between. Our clients have ranged in age from 13-70! Through an awesome partnership with HIGHMARK by SnowPulse/MAMMUT, we have beacons and avalanche airbags containing a shovel and probe for all of our clients to use at no cost while on the snow with us.(all riders are required to carry avalanche safety gear) Equally important, we make sure that all clients know how to use each piece of equipment. The terrain and riding is catered to the clients personal skill and experience level. We help riders advance their riding ability through good decision making, proper technique, and building confidence. Our riding season was in full swing by the end of November. Big storms presented mid season conditions by Thanksgiving! The trend of heavy snowfall continued for the first week or so of December. Our clients were blown away by the amount and quality of snow on Wolf Creek pass. Many of us were getting very excited and beginning to think we were going to have one of those ‘old time winters’ you hear about at the local coffee shop. Unfortunately, the southern Colorado snow maker was then turned off until the end of January. Riding conditions remained very good throughout this time frame thanks to the heavy early season snow as long as you were willing to search out new and untracked areas.

February quickly made up for the dry spell with a storm that put down close to 7 feet in just over a week. I was very thankful for the additional horsepower on my Polaris PRO RMK 800 courtesy of a BoonDocker turbo installed and tuned to perfection by VOHK during these extremely deep days. Keep an eye out for BOONDOCKERS 11 this fall to see just how good the snow was! A good flow of storms continued into March. With the assistance of fellow BOONDOCKER rider Kim Long, we put on the first ever Mountain Skillz Ladies Clinic. The limited number of spots filled quickly we had an excellent group of determined and capable ladies on the snow for two days. Their progression was very evident and we are already looking forward to next year’s Ladies Clinics! Towards the end of March, I traveled to Idaho for the first ever ‘Klim Experience’.(a promotion from last fall) Our winners were a couple of brothers from Michigan that had never so much as seen mountains. Along for the week were two of Klim’s key Iron Dog racers from Alaska, Chris Olds and Mike Morgan. Over the eventful week we toured Klim headquarters, rode for two days, and spent three days in Jackson Hole, Wyoming taking in the World Championship Hillclimbs. It was an amazing experience topped off by cheering on fellow Coloradan Cole Willford as he won his third consecutive 600 mod class title. Spring is now upon us and the snow so far has continued to fall. Looking back, it has been a very memorable season. While I will continue to ride until there is no snow to be found, I am already excited and looking forward to next winter! The excitement and challenges of working with riders and relating to them on an individual basis provides great rewards as I see them advance during our time on the snow. I also enjoy showing them how and why the Polaris PRO RMK is the best mountain snowmobile on the market. Such an incredible winter would not be possible without the support of so many people. Thank you very much to all of our sponsors, friends, family, JJ for your help on the snow, my wife Jesse, and our daughters Elly and Ashley. If you would like to learn more about Mountain Skillz or join us for an avalanche course and/or a technical riding workshop next winter, please visit www.mountainskillz.com. See you on the snow!

North Fork Snowmobile Club
Good morning everyone. It is April 1 and no fooling, I am watching it snow out my picture window. So it is not over until it’s over. The latest trail reports from CSA as of the end of March indicate there is still a good base in our mountains and snowmobiling is good up in the higher elevations. There is still 8’ at the Baldy Mountain marker. However, it is spring snowmobiling conditions and you need to be on the alert for the typical hazards such as sink holes, open water and fence posts. It is always a good idea to get in early and head home earlier than you usually do as we all know that snow conditions can change rapidly especially this time of year. I truly hate loading our machines in the mud. As I read the March/April issue of the Colorado Snow Scoop and perused the articles written by our CSA executive board members, the committee chairs and district Kathleen Starr, David Cotton, Con Hirschfeld and Pat Gallob March 8 up Leroux Creek on our way back from the Vega Lodge where we representative people had lunch. District 9 Roger Pennington Hi All, Well, the weather is more like May/June than March or April. Guess from talking with Mike Doherty from Snowmobile Outfitters a tour company out of Telluride, who I might add has just joined our club because we groom over Bolam. The only place that still has good riding is Bolam Pass from the Barlow Creek Trailhead. He said last week there was a foot of new snow on top of the groomed trail and great riding. The trailhead as well as the trail between mile marker 8 and 9 is melted out on the Purgatory side as per Chip White of Snowmobile Adventure Tours at

Purgatory, who is also a club member. Summing things up, we did not get our contract with the State completed again this year. We have until April 15 to do that but with this week showing temps in the 50s all week and rain below 9,000 ft. on Wednesday and Thursday, I do not think we are going to be doing any more grooming this year unless I haul all the way around to Barlow Creek Trailhead above Rico. We got about 220 hours of the approx. 300 hours of grooming done on our contract. The Forest Service has not helped us out much this year with them continually closing and locking the lower gates on some of our trails this win-
ter that in the past they have left open and allowed us to drive to the snow to unload or to the second gate. Examples are Missionary Ridge Road. They kept the bottom gate closed most of the winter, whereas we have always been allowed to drive as far as the gravel pit which is at the second gate on low snow years. West Mancos as well. We have always been allowed to drive to the snow if there is no snow at the parking lot or the Transfer Park Gate but this year they did allow us for a short time to drive to Transfer Park after getting several phone calls from upset people and then after the tragedy when the Mancos snowmobiler was buried in the avalanche on the back
side of Sharks Tooth the gate was opened and the road was plowed to Transfer Park so the searchers were able to get to the snow without having to ride on a lot of mud. Speaking of Avalanches, the avalanche danger is still pretty high in the back country, especially above timberline. So if you do go for some spring time riding be sure and do it cautiously, everyone in your group should have an avalanche beacon, probe poles and shovels and on any slopes that there might be even a slight question, only expose one person at a time and everyone else be sure and keep an eye on the person that is exposed till they are all the way across the danger zone. If someone is caught in an avalanche everyone needs to try and keep an eye out for them. Mentally mark the last place you seen them and after the slide stops go to that spot and search downhill from that point. When someone is buried, YOU and the PEOPLE IN YOUR GROUP are the only chance the person that is buried has of surviving. There is no way they can wait for a search team to come in and look for them. If you do not have an avalanche beacon, probe pole and shovel. You need to look into buying them. Be sure and keep good batteries in your beacon and KNOW how to use the equipment. Practice around your house. Have one of the kids hide one in a bush or something then practice trying to find it. I understand Purgatory has a beacon practice area. I do not know if they let the public use their practice area but think so. I will get more info and maybe in the future we can go get some practice there for a small fee. Our last meeting till September is coming up the 10th of this month. We still need someone for the Vice Presidents position. Ron Smith is our new President. We need to be sure and Thank Marty Gunn for all the years he served as President and his grooming too. Dianne Larsen is still doing the Newsletter and the Secretary. The search and rescue time, the grooming time, the time we put in for the Fun Days for the Handicapped etc. The State puts all this information together and turns it in so they can show how much motorized recreation donates to charities each year. We are working on filling out a grant application to help us buy a new truck to haul our snowcat. We have actively been looking on line for one and it appears it is going to cost us between $20,000 and $50,000 for a newer rollback wrecker with an automatic transmission with the gross vehicle weight rating, axle rating, bed length, axle spread and bed rating we need to haul that cat. We might even have to go to a tandem rear axle. We are doing this for two reasons. One so more people might be capable of driving the truck with an automatic transmission and two for safety reasons. We are overweight on our rear axle when the cat is dry and once we groom and the cat is covered in snow we are really overweight on that rear axle. We have been extremely lucky we have not had an accident in the past and with traffic getting heavier on the hwy all the time we need to do the right thing and be more safety minded. Well that about does it for this season from here. I will leave you with the reminder that we will probably be doing our annual membership drive at the Bar D Chuckwagon again this year in Aug. It is a lot of fun so you might want to start by putting Aug on your calendar now..... Yep, reserve the whole month so you don’t miss out when we do finally set a date... Till Next Time, Yep, THINK MORE SNOW! Roger Pennington Grooming Foreman and Snowmobile Safety Instructor

Polaris Acquires Kolpin Outdoors, Inc.
Addition of Kolpin enhances Polaris offerings in the powersports accessories market
Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced the acquisition of Kolpin Outdoors, Inc., a privately held, Wisconsin-based company that develops branded and private label powersports accessories. Committed to innovation and growth, Kolpin is a leading aftermarket accessory brand delivering purpose-built and universal-fit Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) accessories and outdoor lifestyle products. This acquisition adds Kolpin to Polaris’ growing parts, garments and accessories (PG&A) business. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. “Acquiring Kolpin Outdoors, Inc. creates a multitude of growth opportunities for our PG&A business, which is a key contributor to
11
Polaris’ top-line growth and profitability,” said Steve Eastman, Polaris’ vice president of PG&A. “Kolpin is a trusted brand among ORV riders, hunters, outdoorsmen, and landowners who value the quality and reliability Kolpin builds into their powersports accessories. Their lineup of exceptional products and deep consumer and retail relationships will help Polaris expand our aftermarket accessories portfolio and enhance our traditional and online distribution channels. ” Kolpin products will continue to be sold under the Kolpin and Cycle Country brands, with customized private label products available through its Premier O.E.M. business. Polaris will further develop Kolpin’s established brand by applying its product innovation and engineering acumen to Kolpin’s operations, and leveraging its existing dealer and consumer relationships to extend the brand’s exposure.
“It gives all of us at Kolpin great pride to become part of the Polaris family. Although different in size, we share many of the same values; small town roots, quality products, life-style brand focus and a rich heritage in product innovation,” said Tom Lutes, president and CEO of Kolpin. “I am confident the combination of Polaris and Kolpin will further enhance the value of our brand to both our consumers and distribution partners alike.” Since 1943, Kolpin has a rich history of providing customers with a wide array of hunting products, accessories and innovative aftermarket solutions. Kolpin has an intimate knowledge of the outdoor lifestyle market that closely complements Polaris’ core powersports business. Photos of select Kolpin products and a slide summarizing Kolpin’s business and its fit with Polaris are available here: www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/ mmg.cgi?eid=50836113&lang=en
