Issues with Fat Tire Bicycles on Groomed Winter Trails
There has been a significant increase in interest in usage of fat tire bicycles on groomed winter routes over the last several years and this is an issue that local clubs have had a wide range of experiences with. Some have had positive involvements and others clubs are reporting there was room for significant improvement in the exchanges. For those that are not aware a fat tire bicycle is basically a traditional mountain bike that has been fitted with tires about 4 inches wide, which partially allows them to travel on snow. I wanted to share some of the issues we have identified that must be resolved in usage of fat tire bicycles on groomed winter routes, so that our members are able to address these issues if the discussion is started with your club. Many of these issues are more directly addressed by land managers but these are issues that should be raised and addressed prior to any usage of routes by fat tire bicycles. 1. Fat tire bicycles are wheeled vehicles and by definition are subject to summer travel management. This means if there is a seasonal winter closure on the route as part of summer travel management, bicycles are precluded from using the route until that prohibition is addressed. Putting bigger tires on a jeep does not change it to an OSV and putting bigger tires on a bicycle does not alter
CSA President Scott Jones
this either. 2. Some areas have prohibitions on bicycles as part of the winter travel planning that has been done. 3. Currently the USFS has no way to sign for fat tire bicycles, as the only sign the USFS addresses bicycles generally. This is a major issue because no one is seeking to allow traditional bikes on groomed routes. The fat tire users need to resolve this issue. 4. Fat tire bicycles exert a lot of pressure on the snow, even if it is less than a traditional bike. The fat tires community has not provided information on

exact amounts of pressure but a traditional mountain bike is estimated to apply more than 50 times the pressure on the snow as a snowmobile. 5. These higher pressures will clearly damage trails, especially in low or slushy snow situations. 6. The snowmobile community has spent decades establishing credible science that finds the snow buffer between resources and snowmobile recreation provides significant protection for resources, both on trail and off. We need to remain vigilant on uses that could impair this buffer as we could lose riding areas. The Stanislaus NF in California is already proposing to close trails due to concerns about snowmobiles contacting amphibians under the snow. These types of issues expand exponentially when you are talking about pressure levels 50-100 times higher than a snowmobile. 7. Fat tire bicycle usage on groomed routes should be a highly site specific determination. These decisions simply cannot be made at the district or forest level and this position is consistent with the position of the International association of snowmobile administrators. If we are grooming a summer road, the issues with pressure are probably less than if we are grooming cross country. 8. Fat tire usage should only be allowed on identified routescross country travel by fat tires will result in litigation and safety issues. 9. There are a lot of new uses and vehicles coming. These usages should be uniformly addressed.

10. All routes remain multiple use. 11. Grooming of fat tire cycle routes is probably not covered by insurance through CSAclubs must make sure this activity is insured in some manner. 12. Have other opportunity areas for fat tire usage been explored? Local greenway trails might be areas where fat tires could groom their own trail network and avoid issues they are encountering on federal lands. 13. While fat tire bicycles are not able to be registered in Colorado, they should still support grooming activities as snowmobile clubs provide a huge amount of outside funding for grooming in addition to registration funds. There has been no effort to date to amend Colorado laws to allow registration of fat tire bicycles. 14. If there is litigation on fat tire bicycle usage, the snowmobile community will be drawn into it as the challenge will be to all usage and not just fat tires. The lawsuit will not come from the recreational community so the consensus among these groups will not be enough. As you can see there are a lot of issues and challenges facing fat tire usage on groomed routes, and the list above is by no means complete. Many of these issues cannot, and should not, be resolved by the snowmobile community. We have fought many of these questions and issues for decades. These are issues for the fat tire community to address but I do believe these are critical questions that must be resolved prior to designated for usage and we can and should raise these questions as part of any discussion.

Is Your Avalanche Safety Gear Ready for the Season? Matt Entz
What have you been doing to assure that you’re ready for winter? I have seen many pictures and routinely hear stories about getting snowmobiles and trailers ready for that first ride. Maybe that means adding a few new aftermarket parts to a brand new sled. Or maybe you found a good deal at the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo in October on some parts and are adding them to your old sled. Regardless, we all want to be ready to ride as soon there is enough snow. Well I want to ask a question and pose a challenge to you! Is your avalanche safety gear ready for the season? Riding in the mountains, you should always carry a beacon or transceiver and a backpack or avalanche airbag containing a shovel with a metal blade and a probe. I’m going to share some tips and things to check with your gear so that we are all prepared for a safe and fun season. The first step is to have ALL of the proper gear. Each piece of gear serves a purpose. There are many places to check out and purchase these items such as local dealerships and online stores. I highly recommend dealing with people that are knowledgeable of the gear and have experience with a variety of options. SnowBigDeal.com would be my personal recommendation as they sell all brands and have years of experience with it all. The next step and equally important as having the gear, is knowing how to properly use each item. All new gear should come with a detailed instruction manual, which is a good way to become familiar with each item. The best way to learn how to properly use your gear is at an avalanche safety course. This is also the place to obtain information to help keep you safe on the snow throughout the winter. There are a variety of seminars, workshops, and courses throughout the fall and winter covering information for everyone from a first time mountain visitor to an aspiring instructor. These will be held at snow shows, dealer events, and on the snow all throughout our state and across the country. If you have taken a course in the past, a refresher is always a good idea. While any and all information is good, I believe there is nothing better than on the snow training and education. If you already own all of the necessary gear, there are a few things that you can check to assure that it’s ready when you get out on the snow. Hopefully you removed the batteries from your beacon last spring when you finished riding for the year. Check the battery compartment for corrosion as you install new batteries. Power on the beacon and test all functions. Visually inspect the beacon of any physical damage such as broken pieces or cracks. If anything is out of the ordinary, contact the manufacturer and get it fixed or replaced immediately. This is also a good time to clean out your backpack or avalanche airbag. It’s always worth a good laugh and story to find that sandwich or snack that you forgot about last season! If you have deployed your airbag, assure that the airbag is properly repacked and in good shape. Check that whatever means of deployment your specific bag uses is ready to go including trigger activation, battery charge, and/or cylinders with adequate air pressure. Check the material of the pack as well as all safety straps and buckles. Assemble your probe and shovel assuring that their simple functions are still working properly. Visually inspect these items as well for any kind of defect. Now that your equipment is ready, place the shovel and probe in their places within your backpack or airbag. There is one more thing that I would ask that you check into before getting on the snow. INFORMATION! There are many outlets for great information from websites to smart phone apps. It’s very important to know the current dangers every day that you go riding. Every avalanche center in North America and others from around the world can be accessed online via www.avalanche.org. The site is easy to navigate and will take you to specific avalanche centers with a click of the mouse. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center can be found directly at avalanche.state.co.us/. There you can access past information, learn more about the center, see current danger, submit observations, make donations, and much more. Other websites with great information are the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education found at avtraining.org/ and the American
5
Avalanche Association at www.americanavalancheassociation.org/. In this day and age of information at our fingertips with smart phones, there are multiple apps full of useful information. You can search ‘avalanche safety’ and get many results for free and pay apps. There are 3 apps on my phone that I use daily throughout the winter. The CAIC app is information for the state of Colorado including the bulletin (each zone forecast) and most information found on their website, in a very mobile friendly format. Avalanche Forecasts is where I go to find information for any avalanche center in the western U.S. This is handy if I am travelling to ride somewhere outside of Colorado, or if I am searching for new snow. Mammut Safety 2.0 is an app that I frequently use while I am on the snow. It’s great for measuring slope angle, risk assessment info, compass, altimeter, and even has a feature allowing you to make an SOS emergency call or text to a designated number. Now that you know your gear is ready for the season, get outside and practice your snow dance! Our first Mountain Skillz avalanche safety course for snowmobilers is scheduled for December 20&21. We will have multiple courses throughout the season and would love to work with you. You can find more information and contact me from our website at www. mountainskillz.com. Have a safe and awesome winter!
QUESTIONS
1. What is equally important to having the proper avalanche safety gear? 2. What should you remove from your beacon at the end of the season? 3. What website will lead you to all North American and multiple worldwide avalanche centers? 4. List two of the three avalanche safety apps on my phone. 5. TRUE or FALSE? We are going to have a lot of snow this winter!

District 1 Steven Marlenee Things are really ramping up in District 1! The Blizzards have been planning their annual Christmas party. At the last meeting I attended (always the first Wednesday of each month at Johnson’s Corner), I really liked something they’re trying. Each month, they pick a topic and have a presenter. This particular ‘workshop’ was What Do You Keep In Your Bags. Several members presented about the safety gear they kept, and also some unique, but useful items. It was a great idea! I like it for several reasons. First, when you think about why people join a club, what answers do you envision? I think of a couple of reasons: to learn more about the sport, camaraderie, safety, riding spots and opportunity. As clubs, we have to continually improve on providing value to our ‘customers’ (members). We need unique content to attract new members, and to keep current members involved. I like the Blizzards out-of-the-box thinking on this matter. For me, it was informative and captivating. Other clubs, like Mile High, use celebrities like Chris Burandt to draw during their new member draw, which is another great function, and one of the things that drew me in to organized snowmobiling when I first moved to Denver. At the next meeting Jon Miller with Backcountry United will be presenting on the
topic of Hybrid Users. His presentation will include tips and tricks, as well as some information. I LOVE this subject. Hybrid users are those that use snowmobiles to get to skiing and snowboarding. And, for a bit, let’s talk about numbers. There is strength in numbers. According to, even as high as the OEM’s, hybrid-use is set to be one of the biggest areas of growth in the snowmobile industry. A recent conversation with enforcement at Vail Pass led me to believe that hybrid users were responsible for an alarmingly high percentage of violations, from out of bounds, to lack of registration. Furthermore, the traditional ski and snowboard industry has turned their backs on these users, forcing them into a motorized ‘category’. While I very strongly believe that categorization implants division in the fact that we are all backcountry users, I think it’s an important segment to capture. Generally speaking, many hybrid users are foreign to the motorized industry. They don’t know or understand the rules and regulations. And, frankly (myself included), the current generation is fairly lazy about education. When these users are causing problems in the backcountry, they are reflected as snowmobilers. Conversely, when they are causing positive outcomes, like increased economy, a stronger voice, a unified user group, and increased enjoyment, they are also SNOWMOBILERS! I write all of this to urge you to consider actively marketing to hybrid users. This user-group is in its infancy. Many of them don’t understand basic snow-
Blizzards Kasey Lauer
Pre-season for the Blizzards has been eventful thus far. We have a new president Carl Brunswig who has also taken on the role of ride coordinator. Our October meeting was an interactive show-and-tell of must-have backcountry gear, and soon after many of our members participated in the Denver Snow Show. This got us really amped up for the season, and although there isn’t ride-able snow in Northern Colorado we’ve been out looking for it! Our November meeting will be focused around our special guest Jon Miller from Backcountry United. He will discuss backcountry safety in addition to the gear created, and the goal of better connecting snowmobiling with skiing and snowboarding. In December were looking forward to the Christmas party at Dan Dunn’s, as well as repeating Doug Clancey’s demo on GPS and Mapping tools and tips. Also hopefully by Christmas we’ll have at least one club ride under our belts if the weather will just cooperate! After the new year were looking forward to our annual Presidents Day Ride, this year at Hahn’s Peak in Craig, Colorado. Overall we are excited for a safe and snow-packed season.
mobiling, and could really benefit from joining a club. And think, how might your club be affected from adding just a few folks? Perhaps our next greatest voice is lingering of the shadows of the currently-abandoned group, Hybrid Users. Perhaps your next groomer operator has yet to be trained? Maybe the next great advocate for the sport is just waiting to get involved. Whatever the case, this is not a double edged sword. Either we welcome this new group into our circles, educate them, and help them to enjoy the sport, or we risk more snowmobilers that don’t understand the rules and portray snowmobilers in a negative light. Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness is also making some pretty big strides. The new education trailer is approaching completion and is quite the marvel. I doubt any state has a comparable facility for teaching avalanche education. It’s impressive to say the least, and one of the many reasons why I think Colorado is a pinnacle of mountain riding. TBA has also been working very closely with me and the rest of the #KnowBeforeYouGo committee on getting the beacon checkpoints up and running. In summary of the Snow Show CSA Meeting, we have tentatively selected a manufacturer for the electronics. Jon Miller with Backcountry United has donated some graphic design to help me get the sign out for first comments. It looks very probable that we will see something at Muddy Creek this season, which I will consider an outstanding success, given what this has turned into. The Snowsnakes have also been

They are still working on the foundations for the groomer shed. They have been successful in obtaining the deed on the land, which has been a long time coming. The 2015 Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo was a big hit. I’m still patiently waiting for numbers from Snow Goer, but it seemed like attendance was up. Vendor attendance was definitely up, as we were out of space! The swap meet was packed, although, it seems like there wasn’t a lot of buying this year. But, it was great to see so many people out selling and getting ready for the season. I’m hoping to have solid numbers soon! Finally, over at Marlenee Photography, I’ve been really busy! I found out, just prior to printing, that one of my photos was selected for the cover of the SledHeads Photo Annual, which is a huge accomplishment for me. I’ve also been working to edit and produce the videos from the workshops at the Expo. It turns out it’s quite a bit of work to type out a one-hour conversation! I’m looking forward to getting out on the snow and doing some work this year! I’m planning on increasing the content on my website and hoping to get some ideas flowing. I really want to do an informative series this year, on how to get to the parking lots, how to park, and finding the best snow, so look forward to some pretty good stuff!

NOWECOS had their first official meeting and has accomplished the work objectives mentioned in the last Snow Scoop. We have one of our trails marked and have refurbished and added the two new connecting trails to the maps of our YOU ARE HERE signs. Thanks to our great club members. Congratulations to one of our club members, Joe Tonso, who was awarded a CSA recognition plaque for his 25 years service as state grooming chairman. He has and continues to work tirelessly to help Colorado’s 26 grooming clubs and groomers remain informed so they can continue maintaining the excellently groomed trails and grooming programs Colorado is noted for. NOWECOS is hard at work selling the CSA snowmobile raffle tickets. Hopefully we can get all our tickets sold. Several of our members attended the CSA Snow Expo and came home with good reports on the workshops and entire event. Thanks to all who planned and helped put it on. We are starting to get some snow up high and we’re all hoping for a great state wide riding season. HAPPY THANKSGIVING and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!
Hidy-Ho from North Routt. On September 22, the club started its active season with an executive meeting called to discuss details with U.S. Forest Service representative Kent Foster in regards to the completion of the new, yet unfinished “trailhead parking facility” on FS Road 550. There are pending issues for the club to deal with and fulfill in lieu of. The first official meeting of the year was logged on October 22 with representatives from the management of Steamboat Lake State Park (SLSP) and the North Routt Charter School (NRCS) board of directors present for new business. The main topic of discussion was a proposal from the NRCS for the club to sponsor and State Park to collaborate with in an effort to host a NRCS fund raiser. Club members and Parks staff alike, are on board and excited for a weekend of winter fun slated for January 23 and 24 with activities including an ice fishing derby on Steamboat Lake, Nordic trails activities on the Park trail system, and snowmobile poker run hosted on the clubs trail system. Mark your calendar for this one as once again, all proceeds with go to the NRCS. Park Manager Julie Arington, presented an awareness to the club in regards to an Agency volunteer program, maybe an incentive prompting individuals to contribute to club efforts. Simply go to the CPW website and sign up as a volunteer, assist the club with pertinent contributions, and that time will be logged for accumulation toward a free parks annual pass. How cool is that…come on out and be a part of something positive for everyone involved, including yourself! The groomer cat has had its annual and should be ready to rock and roll as soon as Ma Nature bestows us with enough snow to go out and set a track, then groom er’ up. Ride hard and hang loose!

Happy Almost Winter!! The good news there is Snow on them thar hills!! From the West Divide Creek side there was easily 5 inches up top from where I could see (as far up as we went – almost to Flag Pole ) Okay, okay, it’s not much but we got to start somewhere! The crisp mornings and visible sign of snow should get you all in prep mode. Check your sleds, gear, test those beacons!! CLUB NEWS: We are looking forward to another fantastic season. Between the riding and events and educational training we hope to see many of you out and about this winter. There are a few changes within our Board this year as we announced last year. We have a new Public Relations person. Ashley Jammaron . Ashley is a bright, motivated, driven person and we couldn’t be more excited. Keep an eye out for Grooming Reports and updates as Larry Strangland will be our new Grooming Chairperson. As you know our annual fundraiser is our biggest event and we are pleased to announce that we will be holding it at the same place as last year, The Orchard in Carbondale, CO. Save the Date – the event is set for January 30, 2016. Keep an eye out on our website and FB for details. We
will be accepting RSVP’s and advance ticket sales on our site as well. Our groomer (the machine) not Mr. Burns – that I know of – needs some annual maintenance and as most of you know it’s not a “cheap doctor visit”. The fundraiser will help re-coop a lot of this expense and we sure appreciate everyone who helps, donates prizes and attends. Remember to renew your membership and check out our website where you can either download an application or Sign up on line right there on our page! Just click on the Join Here tab on the website scroll down and pick your options. (www.mtsoprisrecriders.com/join-club-click-here.html) Joining here does sign you up with CSA as well! District 6 Holy Cross Powder Hounds Lance Trujillo The Holy Cross Powder Hounds are excited for another sled year. We are hopeful that the snow will be a little better than it was last year. The club officers have remained the same but our goals are always expanding. We have some great events such as SledFest2015 and Santa in Minturn planned once again this year. Our SledFest2015 Party is our membership drive that we host every year. This year it will be held on November 13th at the Eagle County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall. Once again we will have SledNeck great Chris Burandt on hand to interact with the members and talk a little on his new ventures. We will have a dealer for each manufacturer with the new sleds for our members to check out. This is a great time to build relations with these dealers and get great discounts and deals from the dealers. Kirby’s BBQ will be providing dinner and we will have sled movies and a raffle with several great items. We will also be hosting a cash bar with funds going back to the club. This year we also plan to structure the event so that the club officers can provide presentations on current events such as Land Management, Grooming Program, Avalanche Awareness, etc. See our website at www.holycrosspowderhounds. com for more information. The Powder Hounds will also work with the Town of Minturn to provide Santa in Minturn. This is an old tradition where the club decorates a snowmobile and trailer to bring Santa down from the hill to have pictures with kids of all ages. The club will provide hot chocolate and snacks as well as the snowmobile and decorations. This event will take place on Saturday December 12 in Minturn. Our groomer is ready and so are we. We just need some of that great white stuff to get the season going. We have some great club rides planned as well as other events. Keep visiting our website or join our club. Keep in mind it’s only $22 more to join our club if you are already a member of another club. Have a great season, Lance Trujillo - Club President

We are getting snow in the high country and temperatures are dipping down into the teens. What a drastic change from a few days ago when we were experiencing low to mid-seventy temperatures in Hotchkiss. Reports are that it will not be above 48 degrees for a few days with the lows dipping down into the teens by Friday night. Good news is that we are supposed to have a nice weekend to finish up our fall weatherizing chores and getting our machines and gear ready to hit the snow. I guess we can’t complain as we have had decent fall weather. Membership renewals need to be in by the end of December. Individual/Family memberships are $38 and Businesses are $48. Our meetings are held the third Monday of each month from September thru April at 7 p.m. at the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge. The side door on the southwest side of the building will be open. Our valley has been experiencing an economic downturn due to a large number of layoffs at our local mines. This appears to also be affecting our membership renewals. We encourage snowmobilers that are able to maintain their memberships to do so as the club and CSA needs your support even more now. Also, the club is looking for ideas/ activities that can be put into place that will encourage our younger population of snowmobilers to join our club and become more involved in club activities. They are the future of our organization and we need to start getting them involved

North Fork Snowmobile Club now. If anyone has some great recruitment ideas, we would love to hear from you. The CSA annual raffle sales are underway. Con Hirschfeld, our CSA representative, brought back tickets from the CSA meeting held at the Snow Show in Denver in October. Ticket proceeds benefit the CSA Scholarship Fund and the snowmobile clubs. This is a great opportunity for our club to make money by selling as many raffle tickets as possible as the net proceeds are split 50/50 between CSA and the club. The club will be selling tickets at City Market in Hotchkiss on November 14th from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m... Anyone wanting to volunteer a couple hours of their time to sell tickets can contact Marty & Lynette at 970-872-3556. Tickets are $5/ea. Anyone wanting to buy or sell some tickets can contact Wes Spore at 872-2167 or Con Hirschfeld at 5272429. Also, ticket stubs, money and unsold tickets must be turned into Wes Spore no later than November 30th in order for him to get everything sent back before the deadline. Well, what are you waiting for? You have a month to buy, buy, buy and sell, sell, sell. Good luck!!!! Joe Oglesby is working with Blasé Reardon, Avalanche Forecaster for CAIC (Colorado Avalanche Information Center) of Aspen to teach the North Fork Snowmobile Club sponsored annual avalanche awareness class. Tentative plans are to hold the one day class the second or third week of January, 2016. Class will be held in the North Fork area
or the Grand Mesa area. Cost is $10 for snowmobile club members, $20 for non-snowmobile members and free to all school kids. This money goes to purchase door prizes for the class. All outdoor winter enthusiasts are welcome to attend. Class will be limited to 30 attendees. For additional information or registration contact Joe Oglesby at 970-250-7891. When plans are finalized, information will be posted on the CSA website calendar, our Facebook page and sent out in our club newsletter. If you have never been to an avalanche awareness class or if it has been a couple of years, it is time to make plans to attend. You will never find a better class and at such a reasonable price. Plans are also in the works to give an avalanche awareness presentation/talk to the Hotchkiss and Paonia schools. Mark your calendar for the second Saturday of February (the 13th) for the North Fork Snowmobile Club’s Annual Poker Run. When the details are finalized we will have all the information for the event in the January/February 2016 Snow Scoop issue, our Facebook page, the CSA calendar and our local news outlets. The club is gearing up for the new season and there has been interest expressed for more club rides this year. Last year, the club had two rides a month, one on a weekend and one during the week. Call Wes if you have any suggestions for club rides, would like to participate or guide a ride. There was talk last
year of having an overnight ride, having another club host us and/ or us host another club, etc. If that is something anyone would be interested in, plans need to made early in order to get all the logistics worked out. Bring your ideas to the next club meeting on November 16. Con Hirschfeld, Pat Gallob, Ray Penland and Wes Spore finished marking and repairing the trails on Black Mesa on Tuesday the 3rd of November with Leroux Creek having already been completed making both areas ready for SNOW!!!! Thanks guys. Our annual Christmas party will be held at the Elks Lodge in Hotchkiss on Saturday, December 19. Festivities will start at 6 p.m. Meat will be provided by the club and members should bring a side dish. If you can, bring an item for the auction and if you want to participate in the gift exchange, bring a wrapped gift for each person attending in your party. Call Wes if you would like to help with setup or cleanup. Anyone wishing to cut their own Christmas tree this year can obtain a Forest Service tree cutting permit from, Weekender Sports in Hotchkiss starting November 17. If you have any questions call Mike Shoemaker at 970-872-3444. That is all for now. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Don’t forget this is the season of giving, so if you know of someone in need, lend a hand. Our hearts and our prayers go out to all those families in our valley that have recently lost their jobs. Also, as you enjoy your holidays with family and friends, keep all our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers as well. Be safe and think SNOW!!

Well here it is time for the Nov-Dec Snow Scoop. Not too much has happened to get excited about. I went to the Snow Show in October and it was a lot of fun and there were a lot of very good displays to look at. I donated to the silent action and I think it was the only item that didn’t get a single bid. The CSA meeting was very interesting, with a lot of information on upcoming action for this year. On the Wednesday before Halloween Mark H. Frank H. and I went up to Selsca Ranger station, where we store our PB 300 and took it out of summer storage. We checked everything to make sure it ready when the Grooming Season starts. The same day we checked all our trails on the plateau for trail markers and signs. When the snow comes we will be ready for it. At this time there is nothing more to inform you about. THINK SNOW!!

Greetings from deep in the high country: Thanks to club president Jim Lokey and several other members, WE ARE READY!!!!!!!!!!!! The groomer is good to go. The Molas Lake area is good to go. We are ready and waiting for the inevitable snow. We had our fall highway cleanup day and once again the big winner is Bud Light. It seems to be the beverage of choice for those wonderful human beings that think its okay to drink and drive and then throw their empties on the side of the road. We have a really magnificent area around these parts, so when passing through, please enjoy responsibly… It’s renewal time. Yes, it’s that time of year again. Time to renew your tags for the new season. Time to renew your membership in the Snowmobile Club. Each and every club needs each and every one of you fine folks to renew your membership in your club. We all need the support of the community and there is no better way to show that support than to renew your membership or join up. We have a lot of great groomed trails designed for a lot of fun and adventure. Our club is in the process of setting a calendar for our events and activities for this coming season, so watch for further updates so you can put them on your calendars. We’ve had a couple of snowstorms already and are expecting more this week so it might be a good time to start working on getting your sleds ready for the coming season. Brakes, battery, fluids, lights, belts, lube, spark plugs, etc., etc., etc…no time like the present to insure that your sled will run good and be safe. I’m in the process of doing that to “Old Blue”, my 1990 Polaris Indy Sport. She hasn’t run in a couple of seasons so I just did the brakes, carburetors, lights, gas tank, and plugs. She now starts with one pull again and is raring to go…. Anyway, please take a moment to renew your club memberships as a way to start preparing for the upcoming great snow season.
Tim Batchelor
Well it looks like winter is here in South West Colorado. Snow is falling in the mountains around Pagosa Springs with 20 inches on Wolf Creek Pass. I saw a few trailers loaded with sleds heading up on to Wolf Creek for some first snow riding. Hopefully this is a good sign for the 2015-16 snowmobiling season in the San Juans. I had a busy summer dealing with trail access issues on our Nipple Mountain trail system. Working with the U.S.F.S. (Pagosa Ranger District), Colorado Snowmobile Association (CSA) President Scott Jones and the State of Colorado Attorney Generals office we were able to come up with a ruling on winter use with private residences within the boundaries of Federal land and plowed Forest Service roads. Without getting into the long story bottom line is we got our winter trails back. It has been a three year struggle and we are looking forward to riding this beautiful high country again. More good trail news is Wolf Creek Trailblazers are now grooming the First Notch/Beaver Meadows trails on the West side of the Piedra River. This is within Columbine Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest. These trails were groomed by the San Juan Sledders Snowmobile Club for the past several years.
