www.snowmobilecolo.com I would like to start by thanking everyone that helped to make the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo a success this year. Steven Marlenee was the Committee Chair for the show and did an excellent job for the first time chairing the show. The seminars were outstanding by all those that hosted; I just wish that I could have attended them all. I was very impressed by all the professional riders giving seminars and their commitment to the sport of snowmobiling, safety, and education. I would also like to say a big thank you to Snowgoer Magazine (the show promoter and manager). It was a pleasure to work with professionals that really understand snowmobilers and I look forward to next year. We will take what we learned and try to make it even better! We had the debut of our new Safety Trailer at the Expo after the recent wrap that was completed by Braap Wraps. I think it will be a great promotional tool for CSA and after some conversations with folks after the meeting we came up with an idea to take it around to the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Racing (RMSR) circuit this year. The RMSR Organizer and Promoter, Mike DePalma, has joined CSA as a member organization and we thought it would be a good idea to support the organization and teach the racers and fans what CSA is all about. I plan to take

the trailer myself as much as I can and work with some others when we get the RMSR Race Schedule. The trailer will also be at the International Snowmobile Congress in Keystone this June 11 – 14. Well now that the Federal Government is back to work, State Parks & Wildlife is in the final contracting stages of the Snowmobile Program Capital Grants this year. The timing of the government shutdown was at a critical time during the process when we were getting approval of the Recreational Trails Program component of the funding. The RTP component is justified by a refund of fuel tax from recreational vehicles that do not operate on the roads, like snowmobiles, ATVs, etc. In Colorado, this fund is administered by the State Trails Program. All of my unofficial sources and gut feelings tell me that this is going to be a great snow year for Colorado. I am sitting at my elk hunting camp in Northern Colorado right now with a storm moving in and a couple inches on the ground, and they’re calling for 4-8”. I am glad for the snow to help the hunting but I can’t stop thinking about several more feet of powder to go riding in a month or two. My philosophy is this: if more people took up the sport of snowmobiling, there would be a lot happier people in the winter. The way it is now, most people dread the snow. Oh well, I just hope you find whatever makes you happy…and let it snow for the rest of us!

Riders enjoy beautiful scenery during the Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club’s poker run last season.

DEADLINE FOR THE NEXT SNOW SCOOP IS DECEMBER 30!

New Category! Few times in our day to day lives do we get to focus purely on selfless positive energy. Our awards program allows us to do just that. Each year, CSA recognizes people for their hard work and dedication to the promotion and encouragement of snowmobiling. This year, I am excited to extend the list of awards to include Youth Snowmobiler of the Year. This category is for Youth snowmobilers, age 12-18, who are deeply committed to organized snowmobiling and are involved in organized snowmobiling that strive to make the sport even more enjoyable in the future. Other CSA awards given are for: • Snowmobiler of the year • Snowmobile family of the year • Groomer of the year • Dealer of the year The efforts by which one shows their support for snowmobiling are done in a variety of ways and the nominations are submitted by individuals, such as yourself, who recognize them. The winners from these categories are forwarded on for a chance to win at the national level. CSA also has their own awards where they honor a Friend of CSA and Club of the year within the State of Colorado. All winners are announced at the 2014 CSA Convention. All nominations need to be submitted NO LATER than January 10. In order to ensure that all nominations are received and given a fair chance, please have them in by the deadline. No submission is too early! For information or to submit a nomination form, please email himes.kate@gmail.com or Katie Himes, PO Box 162, Mesa Colorado, 81643.

www.snowmobilecolo.com It’s snowing!!! I hope the snowfall we have experienced in South Central Colorado so far this fall is indicative of what the rest of the winter brings us. It is exciting to see white peaks! Although it certainly seems as though every time we turn around we are confronted with new challenges to access to public lands, this month I want to share some positive news. It is depressing when all we hear is the negative. We aren’t out of the woods yet at Molas Pass but we did receive positive news for this next season. In a letter dated October 22, 2013, Connie Clementson, the Field Officer for the Tres Rios Field Office of the BLM announced that “Based on the information that I have today, this letter is to notify our permit holders that 2013/14 winter will be the last winter for permitted, commercial motorized use and grooming in this, or any, WSA within BLM Tres Rios.” Although, at face value this doesn’t look positive you have to remember that initially Ms. Clementson’s decision was to halt all snowmobile activity for the 2013/14 season. Much research and many conversations with the Tres Rios Field Office staff by not just CSA but the Silverton Snowmobile Club and the other permit holders in the area served to change the decision. This decision is contingent on legislation currently in the hands of both the Senate and the House Natural Resource committees not passing. If the legislation ultimately passes then snowmobiling activity at Molas Pass will continue for future generations.

The efforts of CSA are being targeted towards whatever needs to be done to help with this process. We are in continued conversations with Representative Tipton’s office and Senators Udall’s and Bennet’s offices to provide whatever they need from us. In another piece of positive movement, in the recently released San Juan Forest Plan Revision FEIS this acknowledgement of appropriate management of wolverine habitat appeared: “Human activities, including dispersed recreation activities, infrastructure, and the presence of transportation corridors, occur in occupied wolverine habitat. The alpine and subalpine habitats preferred by wolverine, however, typically receive less human use than lower-elevation habitats. Land management activities such as timber harvest, prescribed fire, and silviculture can modify wolverine habitat, but this wide-ranging generalist species does not appear to be greatly affected by changes in vegetation. For these reasons, the USFWS (2013b) determined that ‘human activities and developments do not pose a current threat to wolverines in the contiguous United States’ and forest management activities ‘would not significantly affect the conservation of the DPS’.” In layman terms, this simply means that the Forest cannot put permanent, long-term restrictions on recreation activities to protect wolverine or wolverine habitat. CSA has been involved in the question of listing the wolverine as an Endangered Species from the very beginning. Although the Fish and Wildlife Service issued a pro-

posed rule to list the distinct population segment (DPS) of the North American wolverine as a threatened species earlier in 2013 they did not propose any designated critical habitat. Part of the listing decision spoke directly to the absence of mandated management criteria because the main reason for listing has been defined as climate change so the specific mention of human activities not posing a threat is significant. CSA’s representatives were very involved and instrumental in championing this aspect of the decision and staying at the table until it was a done deal. We absolutely need to mention the input from the Idaho Snowmobile Association in the form of studies regarding wolverine and their habitat that they funded earlier in the decade. These studies went a long way to substantiating the point that ‘human activities’ were not a concern to the wolverine. Unfortunately, there are still challenges worth mentioning. The most pressing is the appeal of the San Juan Forest Plan FEIS. Even though there are positive pieces of the FEIS that we applaud, there are not so positive pieces that need rectified. We are working on the appeal and encourage any of you who commented initially to appeal anything that is counter to your original comments. You will be receiving alerts as to the how and where these appeals need to be filed. We have also just submitted a protest on the Tres Rios Field Office RMP. We are hoping to hear feedback on this protest before the end of the year. This RMP does include the area around Molas Pass as well as other riding areas around Silverton, Dolores, Cortez, Bayfield and Durango. If you have any questions, concerns, or problems please don’t hesitate to contact us. The best weapon we have against our access is education and knowledge. We are at our best when we can freely gather and share information and it takes all of us to do that. My family and I wish all of you a Thankful Thanksgiving and Blessed Holiday Season. Ride safe!

Park Service announces final rule to continue winter access to Yellowstone National Park

Jack Welch, Blueribbon Coalition

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced the release of a final Rule/ Regulation for Winter Use of Yellowstone. The publishing of the final Rule officially completes the Winter Use Plan/Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) process. The final Rule assures continued access to Yellowstone in winter by both snowmobiles and snowcoaches. The creation of a “New Final Regulation” to implement the Record of Decision (ROD) was published in the Federal Register on October 22, 2013. And now for the Good News. The Final Rule/ Regulation for Winter Use shows that our collective comments on the “Proposed Rule”, which ended June 17, 2013, have been heard. The Final Rule will provide a framework for more effectively managed access for snowmobiles and snowcoaches in Yellowstone National Park while minimizing impacts on visitors, air/sound quality, and wildlife. This final regulation, will guide management of winter use in the Park and will implement the preferred alternative from the Final SEIS. Under the final Rule, the winter of 2013/2014 will be a transition year during which the Park will allow motorized over-snow travel under the same conditions in place for the past four winters. Up to 318 commercially guided Best Available Technology (BAT) snowmobiles and up to 78 commercially guided snowcoaches will be allowed daily. Starting in the 2014/2015 winter season the Park would permit up to 110

“transportation events” daily, initially defined as one snowcoach or a group of up to 10 snowmobiles, averaging seven snowmobiles per group, per season. Up to 50 transportation events may be groups of snowmobiles. Management by transportation events is an impact-centric approach designed to minimize the impact of oversnow vehicles (OSVs) on air quality, soundscapes, and wildlife; rather than focusing solely on the number of vehicles entering the Park. This new, practical approach to OSV management by “transportation events” will provide greater flexibility for OSV commercial tour operators, reward future OSV technological innovations, and reduce OSV- caused environmental impacts, all while making the park cleaner and quieter than previously authorized. Another important part of the final Rule is that four transportation events per day (one per gate) would be reserved for non-commercially guided snowmobile access, and Sylvan Pass would continue to be operated in accordance with the Sylvan Pass Working Group Agreement. The non-commercially guided access will provide snowmobilers a chance to visit their Park without hiring a commercial guide. The final good news is that, with the final Rule for Winter Use in place, Yellowstone National Park will open its gates for another winter season on December 15th. Please make plans to enjoy your National Park this winter. Check back here frequently (you can use the shortcut: www.saveyellowstonepark.com), as the BlueRibbon Coalition will provide current information as it becomes available. Additional information and an electric copy of the final Plan/SEIS and Rule are available online at parkplanning.nps.gov/yell.

Schweissing Named 2013 Royal Collard Memorial Scholarship Winner

The 2013 Royal Collard Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kelley Schweissing of the Western Slope Snowmobile Association snowmobile club in Grand Junction. He was awarded $1000 to go towards his education at University of Denver. Congratulations Kelley! The winning essay:

How has snowmobiling united my family? Kelley Schweissing

There is no denying that my family is an odd bunch, but in my mind, when I think of what a model family should be, I can clearly see a photo of us all together. I’ve been told all my life that I can be anything I want to be and do anything I want to do, but I never really thought of applying this adage to my family. How can we all be what we want to be and do what we want to do when there are so many different people involved? How can so many differing interests and plans be brought into line with each other to form a bond that spans decades and generations when we all have a right to pursue our individual interests and dreams? I suppose family is, as the saying goes, “like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, but our roots keep us together.” My family is close and we always will be and you could accurately say that snowmobiling is one of our roots. This snowmobiling root started for my family before I was born. My grandpa first started snowmobiling in the late’60s with Ski Daddler snow machines; he later was the Arctic Cat dealer in Collbran for a time and that is when my uncle and mother first began to ride snow machines. Back then, the sled my mom and uncle used was large, box-like, and stout. The distinctive shape earned it the name “Big Boy” and from all accounts it lumbered across the snow, a far cry from the sleds of today. My mom, Rose Anne Schweissing, and in particular my uncle, Andy Kelley, developed a passion for the sport that they have passed on to their respec-

tive spouses – my dad Stephan and my Aunt Judy, as well as my brother Ethan, and of course, me. For me, snowmobiling started 14 seasons ago during my fourth winter. My first sled was a yellow Mini-Z SkiDoo. It sounded like a lawnmower, but it was the beginning of what the next 14 winters would be based upon. As expected, I grew through those years and as of this season I have had six different sleds. My younger brother now follows and has grown into sledding as well, but he always gets my old sled (poor kid). All six of my immediate and extended family members have been united by the sport on many levels. For many of the past Christmases, we have all gone up to our cabin on the east end of the Grand Mesa near Porter Mountain to celebrate the holidays together and celebrate a Christmas that most people have only heard of in fairy tales. My 81 year old grandma even sleds in with us; my dad roasts a turkey and we sit in the 60 year old kitchen in our cabin and watch the snow fall. Our cabin has been in the family for three generations before me and is our favorite place to be in the winter and summer. However, it is only accessible by snowmobile in the winter, so snowmobiling literally unites us at our cabin each winter. My dad is not a particularly outdoorsy person, but even he looks forward to our winter treks to the cabin. We park our trailers five miles out and ride in, pulling all our food and gear behind us in cutters. If snowmobiles weren’t part of our lives, we would be missing out on the best time for my family to get together at a place where we know we will all be happy. When we aren’t having Christmas dinner together or watching a movie by the fire we are

I can’t believe it’s already time to write another article. Things in District One have been bustling with excitement and production as we get into the official start of winter, which in my case, is the Denver Snow Show. At a first glance, the 2013 Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo went better than expected. As our clubs are starting to settle back into normal winter operations, they are starting to plan parties and rides for the ’13-’14 season. Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness has picked up new sponsors and traveled across the USA, promoting avalanche awareness. It won’t be long until everyone is on the snow! The 2013 Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo went through several changes this year. First, our promoter for this year’s show was SnowGoer Magazine. SnowGoer brings a staff well versed in producing snow-

outside playing! We take our sleds out and ride through the mountains, the forests, the valleys, and the parks, and see what is arguably the most beautiful country in the world. We cut a Christmas tree and drag it to the cabin to be decorated. Friends come and we take day snowmobile trips. Every day my mom and aunt take their snowmobiles out on a moose hunt to see if they can find a moose to watch, and they usually find at least one. In the evenings, we watch what we call “dailies”, pictures downloaded from our cameras and projected on to the big screen, of our ride that day, and we laugh and talk about our stucks and our thrills. And at the end of ten days together, no one ever wants to go home. How many families can say the same after they have been in close proximity for ten days? Snowmobiling makes it all happen. Snowmobiling has also has expanded beyond the original six in my family to unite cousins, other relatives, friends, and even one of my teachers. Snowmobiling is my family’s realm and we make sure we are able to share it often with those who are close to us. My cousin lives in Nome, Alaska and is making a trip here the second weekend in March; and why is he coming? So he can ride with us. We will sled in, open up the cabin, and spend what can only be described as true quality time together. No outside interruptions, no cell phones, no work, just my family sledding and spending time together. Snowmobiling has also created a network of connections uniting this branch of my family tree with the branches of other family trees. In particular, Chuck and Donna Perkins, Dave and Denise Bagg, Bruce and Michelle Valiquet, Bill and Pen-

Janelle Kukuk introduces _ during the CSA meeting at the Denver Snow Show. ny Davis, Quint, Sherry, and Tucker Shear, and the Hollingshead clan have helped to create a new sledding family for me. This family is made up of some of my best friends and greatest mentors who have guided me to be who I am today. I can count on them for anything, anytime, and know they will always be there for me, as I will always be there for them. All these families are members of the Snowskippers and many of them are on the Mesa County Snowmobile S.A.R.C team which I was honored to become a member of just this past summer. My Uncle, Andy Kelley, has truly been the driving force behind this great activity and my whole family owes him for it. He has striven to teach me the tricks of the trade concerning riding and he has been a magnificent teacher. I love snowmobiling and it is the reason that my first college choices are in Colorado. I hear horror stories of seniors who are so sick of their parents by the time they leave for college that they’re both equally glad to be rid of each other. This is not the case for me. My family tree rallies around this root that is sledding, and it will keep us united no matter where our branches grow.

mobile shows, and helps put a rider’s perspective on our show. Next, we moved the show from the Denver Merchandise Mart to the National Western Convention Center. The move allowed us several advantages including: a reduction in parking stress, the ability for vendors to drive in and unload/load, larger event space, increased quality and availability of food/beverages, increased space for workshops and clinics, and a better atmosphere. While SnowGoer is responsible for producing the Snow Show, CSA is responsible for the CSA booth, workshops, and the swap meet. I spent a lot of time recruiting the “best in the industry” to put on our workshops. This year’s lineup included: Chris Burandt, Bret Rasmussen, Amber Holt, Matt Entz, Erik Woog (VOHK Performance), Mike Duffy, Brian Lundstedt, Jim Phelan, Brandon ‘TuDizzle’ Cox, Wes Reiff (Braap Wraps), Tom Metsa (Colorado Parks and Wildlife), and Janelle Kukuk (CSA). The workshops were definitely a big hit! Finally, what everyone wants to know, attendance. This year’s event migrated from a three-day event to a two-day event. The final number for attendance was 6,007, see ‘DISRICT 1’ PAGE 7------------------>

www.snowmobilecolo.com which was down about 169 from last year, but when considering the event went from three days to two days, the decrease of 169 would be more than accounted for, just counting the vendors going through the gates on Friday (which wasn’t counted this year). It also looks like we will receive a larger donation from SnowGoer this year (as compared to last year) as a result of our efforts. CSA is still seeking comments and suggestions on the Snow Show and you can email me at smarlenee@gmail.com. All in all, the show was a success, and we look forward to continuing to improve the show. The list of possible changes next year include re-vamping the swap meet, inclusion of some events (such as an aerial exhibition, drags, etc), and the addition of an evening fundraiser. The Colorado Blizzards are gearing up for another great season. Their first order of business was to change the date of their monthly meetings. Meetings will continue to be located at Johnson’s Corner, South of Loveland, CO, but will now be on the SECOND Wednesday of each month. At the last meeting, discussions were held about their annual President’s Day club ride. Locations discussed were Pinedale, WY and Steamboat Lake, CO. The club has visited Steamboat Lake for two years now, and the facilities provided by Hahn’s Peak Roadhouse have been excellent and cater quite well for a large group. Also discussed was the upcoming Christmas party. Volunteers were solicited for organizing the event. It was decided that Friday night works best for everyone, and would leave Saturday available for those wanting to go riding. Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness has been progressing through the circuit of snowmobile expos, throughout the country. They are happy to report the addition of a few new sponsors: FXR Mountain (clothing), CA Pro Skis, trailer safety products from Caliber, BCA including two complete gear setups (bag, beacon, shovel and probe), ABS (2 more avalanche backpacks, In addition to the 2 bags from last year). Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness is also sponsoring this year’s Colorado racing circuit, presented by XMR (Joe Duncan) to raise awareness. As part of this sponsorship, TBA is having the Mountain-Class riders to wear an avalanche bag during racing their events. The top three bag wearing racers in each sponsored <--------------------- ‘District 1’ from page 6

event will receive a payout sponsored by TBA! This move will show that the bags are not restrictive, and will reinforce the necessity of the bags for all snowmobile activities. The Snow Snakes have had one meeting to date. The big push with the North park club is towards the new groomer. Paperwork has been filed and they are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new Husky Groomer, which is expected to come in mid-November. The Snow Snakes have also got the land gated for their new groomer hut. Randy tells me that they are planning on starting the foundation as soon as the frost is gone this spring. Their poker run has been scheduled for March 1st, 2014, and will leave out of the State Parks Facility, just north of the KOA outside of Gould. Just a reminder, the Snow Snakes meet on the First Wednesday of each month, and the meeting location alternates between the Moose Creek and the River Rock cafés. Personally, this winter is looking like it might be a great one for riding. People in Colorado have been riding since late September. Personally, I rode the Snowy Range on October 20, and it was better than anything I rode last year until Christmas. My Facebook News Feed is filled, almost daily, with people reporting snow and good riding conditions. In speaking with a few dealers and vendors, it looks like the industry is selling more units than previous years. A lot of people have been asking me about demo tours to get on the 2014 and 2015 models. Today, I spoke with Amber Holt and she confirmed that Arctic Cat is on board for several demo locations across Colorado (as well as Wyoming and other western states). I spoke with Bret Rasmussen today as well, and Skidoo cancelled their travelling demo program, but are still doing demos through some dealers and some of their professional riders. Matt Entz briefly spoke with me about Polaris’s plans, but was putting in a call with Polaris to see their official plans. As of now, he said Polaris offers people the opportunity to get on a Polaris sled through athlete camps like Mountain Skillz, Burandt’s Backcountry Adventures, and Next Level Riding Clinics with Dan Adams. I don’t have any contacts with Yamaha, but I’ve heard a rumor that we might have a chance to demo some of their stuff later in the season. Ride safe and remember to practice your beacon skills!

Green flag to waive for Colorado racing New partnerships, fresh perspective provide RMSR platform to bring snowmobile racing back in big way Steve Marlenee

For those of you that have been in Colorado for a while, you might remember the days when racing was prevalent here. Almost every weekend, pros and amateurs alike, could find a variety of races across our great state, from oval and ice drags, to hill cross and hill climbs. Over the years, racing has all but disappeared from Colorado while it has flourished in some of our Rocky Mountain neighbors. Well, I’m here to tell you that after a test run last year at Crested Butte, not only is racing back, but it’s being pushed by one of the biggest names in the industry, Mike DePalma. Mike DePalma, Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Racing’s (RMSR) event Promoter is also a former snowmobile racer who raced the national snocross and cross country circuits. Mike and his team have partnered with XGames motorsports organizer Joe Duncan, and the team intends to revitalize and reenergize racing in the western states. From RMSR: “Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Racing, RMSR, is a multi-discipline racing circuit based in the Rocky Mountain States. RMSR is the rebranded, reenergized, and expanded Xtreme Mountain Racing. With new industry partnerships, RMSR is coming into its eighth season of action! RMSR’s Race Director, former racer Mike DePalma, is pushing to expand snowmobile racing in the western states by

offering the opportunity to get involved in racing to anyone that rides a snowmobile. Following a hugely successful Roost the Butte event at the end of the 2012 - 2013 season, which offered four disciplines of racing (SnoCross, HillCross, SnowOvals, and Drags), RMSR is excited to offer those same four disciplines at six, two-day race events for the 2013 - 2014 season. RMSR’s goal is to provide the best venue for racing and to promote the sport of snowmobile racing. The 2013 – 2014 schedule of events is: January 4-5th – Jolestad Motorsports Season Opener - Grand Lake, CO January 18-19th – Roost the Butte - Crested Butte, CO February 15-16th – Grand Lake Winter Carnival - Grand Lake, CO March 1-2nd – Sled Silverton – Silverton, CO March 29-30th – TBD April 10-13th – Ultimate Snowmobiler – Crested Butte, CO RMSR is always looking for volunteers and sponsors to help make events happen. Watch for race coverage coming throughout the winter. For more information contact: Mike DePalma Race Director and Promotor RMSR Racing 720771-1949 www.RMSRracing.com” Mike attended the October CSA Quarterly Meeting to present these ideas to our board and talk about opportunities and cooperation with CSA. Both the board and the attendees were overwhelmingly in favor of RMSR, and there is a lot of excitement building about the upcoming races. For the upcoming Roost the Butte event, there are many exciting things happening. This event is the week before the XGames, and it looks like many of the big names in the industry including factory sponsored teams will be in attendance. This event, for many participants, will serve as the highaltitude warmup for the XGames, and will be a

great opportunity for Colorado to get a close-up of the riders and personalities that will travel to the XGames the following week. This event is expected to be one of the premiere events in Colorado! Ultimate Snowmobiler The other event that has me really excited is the ‘Ultimate Snowmobiler’ race, also in Crested Butte. This will be a ten-event race, with participants scoring in each event, and in the end, someone will be crowned the ‘Ultimate Snowmobiler’. Events will include: a radar speed run, hill cross, backcountry course, snowcross, aerial, and more! This is something that I really can’t wait to see. This race also includes a RMSHAsanctioned hill climb, so expect to see your favorite hill-climb racers! But don’t think we’re just excited for two of the events. All of the events, especially given the production team, will be top-notch, and is a great way to get racing back into Colorado. Another point that Mike was discussing with the board is that these races are definitely NOT just for pros. One of the founding premises of each race is that RMSR wants everyone to get involved. There will be classes for folks that want to run their stock ‘fanner’ all the way up to the big turbos, and experience isn’t required. These races are a great way to get involved in the sport and to learn how to compete. At the last event I attended, they even had kitty-cat races for the younger kids, and seeing those six-year-olds racing around the hill is something that shouldn’t be missed. So mark your calendars, gear up, and head for at least one of these events, because I’m guaranteeing you will have an excellent time, even if you’re just a spectator. See you at the races!

Ski resorts are opening one by one, which is an excellent sign that this year’s snowmobiling season is quickly approaching! Although, any lack of snow didn’t stop Steve and Brad Marlenee from getting in an early season ride at Snowy Range, Wyoming! Why not? Avoiding stumps and rocks just adds to the adventure! Who will be the next brave rider? October is always a big month for us snow lovers because of the Denver Colorado Snow

Expo. It is fantastic to see so many volunteers gather together to make this awesome event happen. Who doesn’t love being surrounded by other people who have the same crazy passion for the sport? At the expo tickets were sold for CSA’s snowmobile raffle…thanks to all the clubs for coming together for such a great cause. Keep selling those tickets everyone! Another big attraction at the Snow Show is the swap meet. Thanks to our club member, Bill Rexford and his helpers, the swap seemed to flow pretty smoothly. If

Two big things are happening here in Steamboat to help get us in the groove for the upcoming snowmobile season. First, Routt Powder Riders (RPR) is hosting SNOWMOBILING NIGHT AT THE MOVIES on November 23, 2013 at the Chief Theatre in downtown Steamboat Springs. We will have four snowmobile movies for your entertainment, a cash bar, food and lots of door prizes. A huge thank you goes out to Gary Eubank, of Extreme Powersports, for putting this together. Gary will have a new sled on display to really get us in the spirit and we will be selling raffle tickets for the 2014 Arctic Cat M-8. Come and see how he is going to get this sled inside a movie theatre. Also helping us with the event is Jason Cobb of Steamboat Snowmobile Tours and Jason Stanhope of Steamboat Powersports. Among the door prizes are goodies from Arctic Cat, 509, Slednecks, NEKKR, FXR, Western and Tucker Rocky. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 on the night of the event and can be purchased at Extreme Powersports, Steamboat Powersports and All That Jazz in Steamboat. If this is anything like the last snowmobile movie night it will be great fun! Hope to see you there! The second big thing is the release of the Invitation for Opportunity to Comment on Rabbit Ears Winter Parking Project. The Forest Service has prepared the Notice of Proposed Action (NOPA) for the project, the purpose of which is to improve vehicle parking and staging facilities on Rabbit Ears Pass along US Highway 40. The project includes engineered parking lots sized to meet current equipment needs, improved public safety and additional sanitation facilities for the numbers of users the Forest Service has been monitoring in recent years. The entire NOPA is available for review online at: www.fs.fed.us/nepa/fs-usda-pop. php/?project=35313 . The comment period is only open for 30 after the publication in the Steamboat Pilot newspaper. Routt Powder Riders President, Ed Calhoun and Vice President George Kostiuk and others have been working with Kent Foster, Recreation Specialist for the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest for serveral years on improving snowmobiling parking on Rabbit Ears. RPR is fairly pleased with the proposal which includes expansion of the Muddy Creek Lot, including a separate area for overnight parking, and moving of the Dumont Lot from alongside US 40 and its expansion. Parking on both sides of the highway at the East Summit on the curve before you start down the pass on the Kremmling side will be eliminated due to safety concerns. If you ride on Rabbit Ears, and many of you do, please send a quick response. CSA will respond and RPR will also submitting a club response but we need individual snowmobilers to comment also. Thanks in advance for doing that. One last thing, RPR wants to thank Tom Metsa, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the grant review committee for awarding RPR with a grant for a new to us “slighty used” groomer. George Kostiuk, Ed Calhoun and Jason Cobb have been really busy getting it ready to go. Now all we need is snow!

October has drawn to a close and November is knocking at the door. The month of November is a time to be thankful, and the NOWECOS Club has much to be thankful for this year. Our club was a recipient of a grant from the State Parks and Committee. We are now ready to roll in our new groomer and have high hopes of keeping approximately 107 miles of trails in the Bears Ears District of the Routt National Forest in top condition for snow lovers everywhere! Members have been about and about already marking some of the trails. More trails will be marked after there is some measurable snow. Right now, we are selling raffle tickets for the Colorado Snowmobile Association. First prize is a 2014 Arctic Cat M8000 Snow Pro 153 and second prize is an Arctic Cat ZR120. Tickets are $5 a piece with the drawing held on December 28, 2013. Winners need not be present to win. The NOWECOS Poker run will be in January. Watch for more information to come regarding starting time, etc. This event has always been well attended and is a great outing for family and friends! Following the Poker Run, there will be an awards banquet and meal for the participants. Our club had an awesome turnout last year, many of our local businesses donated prizes, and the weather was picture perfect! Also in January, NOWECOS will be putting on a Safety Clinic/Avalanche Training. Also look for more information soon regarding the specific dates and times. We really enjoy having the opportunity to welcome new members to our club. There are club rides every month and at least one overnight trip planned so far. If you have an interest in becoming a member, or would just like to keep up to date on our club information, check out our website at www.northwestcoloradosnowmobileclub.org/ or look us up on Face Book! Search for Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club. We have a lot of good information and awesome pictures that have been shared by our members. We would love for you to join us!

you didn’t get to attend the 2014 expo, unfortunately you missed out on some great deals on gear and attending a ton of free seminars with outstanding people in the industry. Besides preparing our sleds and gear for the winter, our club has started to plan our Christmas party and the Annual Presidents Weekend Ride. Good times! Hope to see everyone on the mountains this winter, I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year for riding!

The Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Expo at the new location; National Western Complex was a tremendous success. Vendors had more room to display and customers had more vendors to visit. Arctic Cat came through again this year and donated not one but two wonderful sleds. One happy vendor mentioned to me that his sales were up 25% this year. They could even go higher if we were open on Friday evening. The executive board meeting was well attended; in fact this was the first time District 3 had attendance from all four of my clubs. For full details about the meeting I would like to encourage readers to visit the CSA web site. Our Swap Meet was also a success with some room for improvement. A number of folks were disappointed that it was only held on Saturday and others were just fine. I showed my Nytro and was not able to get it sold; however it did sell this week. We are looking forward to your comments on how you would like to see things done next year. And in closing CSA can always use a few hours of your time to help setup, tear down, hang signs, put parking lot cones out, sell raffle tickets at the CSA booth or just speak to the public about our sport. A few hours goes along ways. Dennis

We had a sunny day for our Adopt A Highway cleanup on October 19. Earlier in the week, I had my doubts. There had been enough snow to cover up the litter. But it warmed up like it frequently does in October and the snow was gone in time for us to do our civic duty. 6 of us showed up to have a couple of doughnuts and socialize before tackling the mile of highway. We have been noticing that most years there has a trend for less trash along the highway. That is good news. Maybe people care a little more? On October 26 Trail Blazers and Trailgroomers combined forces to put up snow fence on the trail out of Grand Lake and on the hill opposite the Lakeview Conoco. Keeping riders on the path and out of trouble with land owners is the goal. We do this every year, but this is the first one in a while that we weren’t wading through snow to accomplish. Moving it up a couple of weeks helped. The five volunteers who were there made short work of the task. We are getting ready for the snow! Since then we have had several small snowfalls and the mountains are looking very tempting. I am hoping for a ride on Veterans Day this year! Upcoming events are the Pancake Breakfast on November 30 and the Hot Dog Ride on December 7. Ride leaders for the Pancke Ride are Tom and Debbie Mason, 970-531-5812 and 970-531-3480. We will meet at Idleglen staging area at 9 a.m. for breakfast. Potential new members are especially welcome to come and meet all of us. Enjoy a full breakfast and go for a ride afterwards if trails are ready! John Amerman will be leading the Hot Dog Ride on the 7th of December. His contact is 970-627-5482. We will meet at Idleglen at 11 a.m. and ride to the start of the Afterburn trail (across from Whiskey Park) to enjoy dogs and brats. If there is not enough snow, we will cook out at Idleglen. If you can’t ride to either event, drive. We will be there anyway! I hope that by the time you read this, you are already enjoying the start of a great season of snowmobiling. See you on the trail! Think Snow!

Mile-Hi Snowmobile Club Monika Major

According to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations latest statistics there are 33,000 snowmobiles registered in the State of Colorado, approximately 80% of registration fees goes back to club who are grooming our trails. About 12% of these snowmobile owners belong to an organized club. We always get emails from the CSA about public land usage issues and wonder what is happening in the background. The CSA is the voice on land access issues, funded from membership fees from small percentage of snowmobile owners. I am sure you have friends and know other riders who do not belong to a club, we all do. There is something you can do to have these friend help the sport

and to protect our riding areas. Have a fundraiser that will benefit the Right To Ride Fund. Monetary donations to this fund used exclusively to support access to public lands. Our own Daren Jacobson took fundraising in his own hand by designing, purchasing and printing shirts. These shirts were sold at the Mile Hi Snowmobile Booth at the Snow Expo and through supporting dealer Vickery Motorsports. Approximately $2100 from the proceeds will be donated to the Right To Ride Fund. Mile Hi Snowmobile Club members and board of directors will continue their fund raising efforts to support this great cause that benefits all outdoor lovers. We call out to all other clubs to join our efforts in this fight!!

The Pikes Peak High Riders met for the first time this winter season. We met at the Mason Jar Restaurant, 2925 West Colorado Ave, Colorado Springs, CO. The restaurant is on the west side of Colorado Springs so it’s convenient for both riders from Colorado Springs and Woodland Park. We will meet the second Tuesday of the month this year with the meeting starting at 6 p.m. The meeting was the Tuesday before the Denver Snow Show so we didn’t get to discuss if the new location and events were a success. However some members did attend the CSA meeting and reported that attendance was good. From their comments it seemed things went well and they all look forward to future shows. The first item of business discussed was the upcoming ride schedule. In years past we have scheduled club rides every two weeks from as far south as Chama, NM and to the north Snow Range, WY. Members were sent out an e-mail with a list of ride destinations and votes will be tallied at the next meeting to decide where we will ride this year. The ride schedule will be posted to the PPHR web site when it is finalized. We look forward to seeing fellow riders this year on the trails and better yet off trail somewhere. This summer the US Olympic Committee contacted the club and said in conjunction with the Sochi Winter Olympics they are planning an event in downtown Colorado Springs on Feb. 7, 2014. They wanted to know if we would like to participate in the event. They said they plan on making snow to cover some of the streets. The Red Bull Snowmobile Jumpers are scheduled to attend. They originally considered a snowmobile drag race but some lawyer decided that would not be a good idea. Lee Roth, District 5 CSA rep, will be discussing this with the CSA to see what we can do to help the USOC. Stay tuned for more info. Lee Roth also briefed the club on the upcoming 46th Annual Snowmobile Congress that will be held in Keystone, CO June 11-14, 2014. With all the events it will be a busy riding season. Now if Mother Nature cooperates it will make out year.

Well, here comes winter again, it might be starting early this year. Hope so!! Our club has finished up with our summer trail maintenance program. Now we are busy getting the groomers into shape for the upcoming grooming season where we have 95 miles of snowmobile trail to keep groomed in the winter. Dale Gilden, Dan Crane and I put some new hydraulic hoses on the PB 100. We also did the fall maintenance; oil-grease, water, bolt checking, ect. The PB 100 is used to groom Owl Creek from the forest service boundary on the Big Cimarron to Vista Point on the Ridgway side. It has to be in top shape for this job. Dan Crane, Frank Hollendonner, Martin Strole and I did the maintenance on our PB 300 which included welding on the tiller (pictures included), checking all fluids and tires, greasing and checking for loose bolts. The PB 300 is used to groom the Uncompahgre Plateau from Dave Wood Road to Columbine Pass plus 5 miles down Highway 90 on the west side and some of Transfer Road. Can’t have this one quit on us either! With Christmas around the corner we are getting ready for the annual parade and Susie McGee is in charge of making that happen. Also, she is hot on planning a Christmas party where members bring food items or toys to donate to the needy. Other than the grooming program, that has kept us pretty busy, everyone that has a snowmobile is getting it out, checking belts, track, skaggs and carbs for gas residue (if you still have a carb) to see if they can still get another winter out of the old one. Some members have been checking out the new sleds, some 2013 left over and there is a good supply of 2014 sleds in stock in our area. The new one’s mostly all have fuel injection which is a big plus. The Snow Show this year was great according to Larry Fandrich our CSA Representative. He brought back 500 tickets for our club to sell as a fund raising project with the proceeds going to local charities in our area. Hope we can sell all of the tickets! By the time this article comes out we may be doing some road riding (not cross country). Hopefully on one of the new 2014 sleds and not worrying about the old one giving up the ghost half way through the season. That’s it for now. Hope to see you all on the trails this season!

West End Sledders

I’m back! And so is the snow. Winter has arrived in SW Colorado and the snowmobilers couldn’t be more excited. Westend Sledders is ready! Bring it! Our groomers are serviced and ready to go. AND, we have a great group of operators ready to go. As per the norm, the snowmobile club held their annual trail cleanup in late June. This year we were on the Uncompahgre. We picked up trash, had a picnic lunch and drank a beer or two. Great times! A special thank you to our active members who keep this club going! I’m sure I’m not alone when I say “I’m quite frustrated with our government”. So I’ve been doing some thinking….what if….snowmobilers ran the Government? Let’s start with our current issues. Shutdown? You bet – all winter. Not because we’re all acting like children and are incapable of making a decision; but because we’re going snowmobiling! And not at the cost of the taxpayers. Obamacare – no way. How about Snowbamacare? Much

better. Everyone would be required to own a snowmobile. However, people WOULD be able to keep their current sled if they wanted. People WOULD be allowed to purchase whatever brand of sled they prefer and they could purchase it wherever and from whomever they preferred (no matter what state you live in). We don’t care if the website is down, we’re going snowmobiling! I could go on and on, but I think you get it. In light of all this frustration I have also been thinking a lot about life in general and how quickly the days and the months and the years slip by and how much we take for granted. Who has ever been sitting eating lunch and thinking about what they were going to have for dinner? I’m a foodie so this is how I roll. But my point is this; we as humans have a hard time living in the moment, whatever it might me. How many times during the winter do you long for summer? A nice warm day, with the sting of summer on our skin. A cold beer in your hand, watching your hus-

band mow the lawn? I know I have. And who hasn’t been sitting there in the summer heat longing for winter? That first blanket of snow as it glimmers in the early morning sunshine. The feel of snow blowing in your face as you race through the fresh powder on your snowmobile. Starting today, I intend to live in the moment. Enjoy every bite of that grilled cheese sandwich instead of thinking about the steak I’m going to have for dinner. I’m going to enjoy that snow blowing in my face instead of thinking about going down the slide at Lake Powell. I’m going to enjoy those long conversations with old friends instead of thinking of all those chores that need done. Stop and smell the roses? Maybe not, but embrace the things that life throws at you. Whether it be snowballs or beach balls. Embrace it! If every day were easy; if every day were the same…..well, you know the rest. Winter is here (or snow anyway), snowmobiling is just around the corner! See you on the trial.

North Fork Snowmobile Club

Winter has arrived early this year with several snow storms throughout the state. It has unofficially been reported to me that there was over a foot at Baldy on Black Mesa this last week and a 2-3 foot accumulation on Grand Mesa. I can believe it as we had several inches at our camp on the lower west end of Crystal Creek when we went in to haul our horses down to lower country. It was a real wet, dense snow. Also the weather in October seemed to be colder than normal with only a few days getting into the lower 70’s. We had a lot of rain in September with some flooding in the North Fork Valley. The ground is certainly saturated as we also had several rains in October. Hopefully we are starting to accumulate a good base early in the season. If you haven’t already sent your membership renewals in, please do so as soon as possible. You can mail them to NFSC, P.O. Box 472, Hotchkiss, CO 81419 or online at www.snowmobilecolo.com. The dues for NFSC are $8 for individual/ family or business. CSA is $22 for individual/family and $32 for business. If you have any questions, call Wes Spore, NFSC President, at 970-872-2167. The Avalanche Awareness class will be held January 3rd and 4th this year. There will be a Friday night chili supper at 5:30 with training to start immediately afterwards. Randy Engle, Trails Coordinator from the Grand Junction office of the Parks and Wildlife will be the instructor for both days. Location for the Friday night class will be determined at a later date. You can check the CSA calendar of events web site at www.snowmobilecolo.com or call Joe Oglesby, Avalanche Coordinator for NFSC , at 970-9213002 for this update. Saturdays’ Avalanche Rescue Training will be at the Mesa Top parking lot on Grand Mesa. Back Country Access probe poles and beacons will be made available but if you own your own equipment you can use them if you so choose. Training is right off the parking lot so you don’t need snow shoes but they do make it a little easier. Some BCA probe poles will be given away Friday night as door prizes and one BCA Tracker DTS will be given away Saturday after training. Cost for this training is $10 for snowmobile club members and $20 for non-members. You will be able to join the North Fork Snowmobile Club or the Delta SnoKrusers on Friday night. Joe Oglesby is in the process of coordinating Avalanche Awareness talks with Colorado avalanche professionals for Hotchkiss and Paonia schools under the umbrella of the North Fork Snowmobile club and with Cedaredge, Delta, and Collburn schools under the umbrella of the Delta SnoKrusers. As soon as Joe has a schedule for these talks, we will get it sent out. On Thursday, December 12th at 6 p.m., Mike Duffy will be holding an avalanche seminar at Montrose Implement and Motorsports in Montrose, Colorado and is sponsored by Ski-doo. Contact Brian Martin at 970-2401720 for details. Pre-registration is required. This is the second year this training has been offered and it was well attended last year. As reported last year, JT Hotchkiss, a NFSC club member, was accept-

15

ed by Polaris to race on their “B” team in the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hill Climb Associations’ circuit in 2013. JT had a great racing season last year and will be racing in the 2014 circuit. JT would like to thank the following businesses for their help and support last year: Durmas Racing, Weekender Sports, Elk Basin Outfitters, Hotchkiss & Sons, Hotchkiss Ranches, McLeod Outfitters and family. JT will be racing in Crested Butte on January 17. His 2014 schedule is as follows: Cook City, MT - Feb. 8-9, Bear Lake, ID - Feb. 14-15, Afton, WY - Feb. 21-23, Pinedale, WY - Mar. 8-9, Jackson Hole, WY - Mar. 20-23, Beaver Mtn., UT - Apr. 4-5, Crested Butte, CO - Apr. 12-13, Targhee, WY – TBA. The CSA 50-50 raffle tickets are available. First Prize is a 2014 Artic Cat M8000 Snow Pro 153. Second Prize is an Arctic Cat ZR120. Tickets are $5 each. Drawing is December 28, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Front Range Artic Cat in Fort Collins. Remember, the raffle’s net proceeds are split 50/50 between CSA and participating local snowmobile clubs. This is a great way to earn money for our club. Our club members sold 519 tickets last year. Let’s try to beat that amount this year. All tickets must be back to Con Hirschfeld no later than December 17 as he will be mailing everything to CSA on December 18. Deadline for all ticket sells must be into CSA by December 21. For information on how to get tickets to sell or buy, call Con at 970-527-2429. The club’s 34th Annual Poker Run is still in the planning process. We should have all the details in future Snow Scoops and always check the CSA calendar of events for dates and times for all Colorado Club events. However, it is always held the second weekend of February, so mark your calendars now and plan to “Come Play with Us and Bring a Friend.” If you want to help with this event call Joe Webb, Poker Run Coordinator, at joewebb2571@hotmail.com or 970-250-2571. I do not have the date for our club Christmas party as our club meeting is not until Thursday, November 7. Members will get the date and time in their next club newsletter. That is all I have for now. Thanks to all of you that have been snow dancing. Keep up the good work. As always and especially through the holiday season, keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Happy Thanksgiving and happy snowmobile trails to you!

San Juan Sledders Snowmobile Club

Hi All, Well, summer went way to fast. I was still tending garden and was harvesting some great crops when three weeks ago it came to a sudden stop with two hailstorms in one day. The first pretty well wiped everything out and the second finished things off. I had hail piled up on the West side of my garage three to four inches deep and it lasted for three days. The yard looked like it snowed except of all the leaves that were stripped off of the trees, grape vines etc. littering the yard. So summers over and time to start thinking snow. Well, not quite.... Our snowcat is still in Grand Junction having a major service done on it. After eight years of grooming with the same cat, the tiller needs some major repairs as well as some other work to get it back in tip top shape. I am not sure when we will get it back and even if we could go get it right now I would have to haul it back through either Utah or go through Disappointment Valley as Lizard Head it closed to oversize loads and of course we can’t take an oversize load over Red Mountain, Molas and Coalbank Passes. We are looking at a new truck and have just missed out on a couple that would have fit the bill really well. The last one was in California so we would not have had far to go get it. We will keep looking and hopefully come up with something before the snow flies. We had our first meeting of the year on Thurs., Oct. 10. Our Secretary ran the meeting with the President out of town for work and our VP and Treasurer missing. We had a good meeting, paid some bills and discussed the new truck possibilities we had as well as the cat getting fixed. It was announce that the President’s position will be up for election in Feb and that Marty is not going to run again. If there is anyone out there that would like to run be sure and let Marty or one see ‘san juan’ PAGE 17------------------> of the other officers of the club know. Hope is looking for

Hi All, Silverton has started to see some white stuff so snowmobile season must be on the way. Then again there seem to be some riders that can’t wait. As I was driving over Red Mountain Pass I saw snowmobile tracks already. Pretty sure to be hitting some rocks this time of year but the riders must be thinking it is worth it... The Silverton Snowmobile Club is getting ready to set their calendar of events for the season and we should be able to get it into the next Snow Scoop for those readers that wish to join our activities. One of the items on our calendar already is the free avalanche safety course sponsored by our club and given by Colorado State Parks on January 11, 10 a.m. at Molas Lake. Be sure to take advantage of the free snowmobile safety courses that the clubs provide, lots of good tips for safe riding. Think Snow... Dean

www.snowmobilecolo.com suggestions for club rides this winter. Check out your club news letter for her phone number and give her a call if there is some area or ride you would like to see on the schedule. Our next meeting will be Thurs. Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. if you would like pizza provided by the club or 7 p.m. for the meeting. It is held at the Glider Park North of Durango on Hwy 550 at MP 26 is the driveway. It was suggested maybe we could have meetings held each month at a different location, like one month in Farmington, one in Bayfield, one in Vallecito. If you like this idea, let the Club Officers know and we will get it set up. If not we will continue to meet at the Glider Park. I missed both the May and August CSA meetings in Glenwood Springs due to my new job and having to work weekends. In November my schedule will change again and it looks like I will be able to maybe make some meetings if they are close to home. I will be working Sunday through Tuesday of each week. This might allow me to do some riding this winter and do some grooming too. If there is anyone that would like to run for the Club Rep to CSA, I would be willing to give it up. There are four quarterly meetings and the convention each year. Three of the meetings are held when and where you can go snowmobiling so this is an opportunity to get a chance to snowmobile other parts of the state with only about

CSA Raffle Ticket sales are underway for the annual CSA Raffle, with the drawing to be held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 28, 2013 at Front Range Arctic Cat in Fort Collins. Get your tickets today! Tickets are just $5 each and the first place prize is a 2014 ARCTIC CAT M-800 Snow Pro 153” with a retail value of $12,649. Second place prize is a MZ120. Purchase tickets for $5 from your local club or fill out and mail the coupon below and we will send your tickets directly to you! Ticket proceeds benefit CSA Scholarship Fund and local clubs. Clubs: What a great opportunity for local clubs to generate money. Just sell this year’s snowmobile raffle tickets. The 2014 Arctic Cat Snow Pro was donated, in part, to CSA by Arctic Cat and the generous Colorado Arctic Cat dealers noted. Please support these local dealers as they continue to support and partner with CSA and local snowmobiling clubs. The raffle net proceeds will be split 50/50 between CSA and the participating local snowmobile clubs. So it’s an excellent way to earn money for your local snowmobiling club. Last year’s CSA proceeds were used to pay Groomer Insurance & CSA’s scholarships. So even CSA’s portion helps to benefit local clubs and keep trails open to snowmobiling! So sell those tickets and buy some for yourself. Tickets and money are due back from the local clubs by no later than Dec 21 2013. If you have any questions or concerns or need more tickets, contact Bill Rexford by calling 970-481-0230, email: Rexford.bill@gmail.com or by mail: Bill and Dianna Rexford, 11316 CR 70 Windsor CO 80550.

four hours on one day of meeting to attend. I attended the meeting at the Snow Show in Denver on Sat., Oct. 12. The ACSA meeting will be hosted by CSA in Keystone in June of 2014. If you are interested in attending this event be sure and read about it probably more in this issue or go on line to the CSA web site for more details. If we get the snow this winter we’ll be grooming about 300 hours or more. We got just slightly less in grooming funds in our contract than we had last year. If you would like to volunteer to do some grooming or learn to groom, be sure and get a hold of Roger Pennington at 970-884-2101. If we get some early snow, I will try to have a Snowmobile Safety Training Class in early Dec. this year. It will probably be on like Friday night the 6th and Saturday the 7th or the 13th and 14th. The class consists of about three to four hours of classroom on Friday night then we finish up in the classroom on Sat morning with the on the snow portion on Saturday afternoon. This is a required class of children 10 years of age to 16 to be able to ride a snowmobile alone. It is also a good class for anyone new to the sport. To sign up or for more information, call Roger at the above number. That is about it from here for this month. Till Next Time, Think Lots of Snow, Roger Pennington

Polaris ‘Winning Riders’ Program Supports Snowmobile Associations

23

For the ninth consecutive year, state and provincial snowmobile organizations across North America are receiving contributions from the Polaris “Winning Riders” program, which generates support for the state association user groups based on sales of new Polaris snowmobiles. From Newfoundland to Washington and Alaska to Quebec, snowmobile associations are receiving “Winning Riders” funds proportionate to the number of new Polaris snowmobiles sold within each state and province. Polaris is making contributions to snowmobile associations in 12 Canadian provinces and territories and 25 states in the United States. Polaris also announced it is extending the Winning Riders program through the 2014 sales season, meaning contributions will be made next year based on retail sales of new Polaris snowmobiles between April 1, 2013, and March 31, 2014. “The passion for snowmobiling is running strong across the North American snowbelt,” said Mike Jonikas, VP of Polaris Snowmobiles, Sales and Corporate Marketing. “We see real benefits in supporting the associations that coordinate activities of snowmobile clubs and help develop great riding opportunities.” Polaris makes the “Winning Riders” contributions with “no strings attached,” allowing each state or province to decide how to use the funds it receives. Projects funded by Winning Riders donations in recent years have included membership drives, trail and grooming programs, legislative efforts, tourism promotion and more.
