exico City is one of the largest metropolises in the world and visiting it for pleasure or business could be tricky at times. For this reason, when we were making this small guide, our intention was to help you enjoy a pleasant stay, and that you want to come back to our city soon. CDMX is a place full of history, with centuries-old buildings and places that have resisted the onslaught of modernity. One of them is the Forest of Chapultepec, a great lung of the city and one of the main sources of drinking water since the founding of the great Tenochtitlán. Therefore, in our main article, the historian José Antonio Miravete told us how Chapultepec was a coveted territory for centuries because of its springs. Our interviews are with the Peruvian actor Mauricio Abad and the Spanish businessman and stylist Jonathan Mas. Both share their experience when they first decided to move to this city, and they also recommended some places for you to visit. E
ven though the ancient Tenochtitlán was surrounded by water, it was not drinkable water because the lakes were brackish, except for Xochimilco and Chalco. Therefore, from the beginning it was necessary to obtain water from springs near the city. Chapultepec, also known as “Cerro del Chapulín” in Nahuatl (chapollin, ‘grasshopper’, and tepetl, ‘hill’) was coveted for centuries for its abundance of drinking water. The pre-Hispanic gliph that describes Chapultepec shows a hill bathed in water with a perched grasshopper at the top, giving this place a sacred character. Visiting Chapultepec takes us on a journey through the history of the city, from ancient times to the present days. According to the Pilgrimage Strip, the Aztecs arrived in Chapultepec in the year 2 cane (1299-1300 AD). The eminence of the land and the surrounding forested area were occupied by different tribes since 3000 BC.

Let’s start the tour by the Entrada de los Leones (Entrance of the Lions), where Paseo de la Reforma changes its layout. That was not the original final location of the French sculptor Gardet’s lion figures. They were initially ordered to be melted down to adorn the entrance of the Legislative Palace, which was the unfinished dream of Émile Bénard during the Porfirio Díaz administration. When the work for the Palace was suspended (known today as the Monument of the Revolution), it was decided to place the lions at the entrance of the forest. Once we pass the Altar a la Patria (monument to the Niños Héroes, the patriotic cadets who died defending the Chapultepec Castle during the Mexican-American war), designed by Ernesto Tamariz and the architect Enrique Aragón Echegaray in 1952, we will walk towards the ramp that gives access to the Castle. On one side of the castle we must look for the remains of the aqueduct built by Nezahualcóyotl, king of

Texcoco, at the request of Moctezuma I, to solve the water supply problem in Tenochtitlán. Only these arches remain of the aqueduct that ran through what is now the Circuito Interior (Internal Circuit), previously known as Calzada de la Verónica, up until the old Calzada de Tlacopan, now San Cosme, and from there to the current intersection of Avenida Hidalgo and the Eje Central, next to the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts), where it was known as the Fountain of the Mariscala. 7

Turning left, we will observe pre-Hispanic petroglyphs through a fence. Further on, to our right, we will find the obelisk that was the first Monument to the Niños Héroes, and later on, we will see the remains of water boxes and canals from the 15th century. Continuing our walk, we will be greeted by El Sargento, a centennial sabino –known in Mexico as ahuehete, ‘old man of the water’ in Nahuatl– more than forty meters high, planted by Nezahualcóyotl himself. Flanking the historic tree are the Fountain of the Templanza by the sculptor Enrique Guerra, and the monumental tribune commissioned by the President Plutarco Elías Calles and currently known as the Monument to the Squadron 201. Right on our left, we will find a door that gives access to one of the most incredible spaces in the forest, created by the writer Salvador Novo: In xochitl, in cuicatl (in the flower, the song), a space with ambient music where we will be surprised to find the cavern of Cincalco (cave of the place of corn), which leads to the Mictlan which the Mexicas considered it a portal between the world of the living and the world of the dead. We will continue walking to reach the pool (masonry container for storing water form the springs) better known as the Moctezuma baths, where we can imagine the water tanks that existed in the forest and

see a replica of the figure of the chapulín in carneolita, red stone, discovered in one of the various pools in the forest and that explains the insect created as a totem animal. We will end our visit by walking a little further to reach the Nezahualcóyotl fountain, the work of the sculptor Luis Ortiz Monasterio, where the three glyphs of the towns that made up the Triple Alliance can be seen. Along the fountain there are eight scenes from the life of the poet king, who also dreamed of Chapultepec and knew how to take advantage of its water wealth. In 2019, the Chapultepec Forest won the award for the best public park in the world in the second ever International Large Urban Parks Awards given by the World Urban Parks organization.

orazón de Alcachofa is located in Polanco’s most famous avenue. The restaurant is an elegant establishment with a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, where delicious food is served. We can assure you that even the most demanding diner will leave here with a smile. To find out a little more about this place, we had a pleasant chat with chef Francisco Navarro. Chef Paco, as his team calls him, is originally from Mexico City and has extensive experience in the food sector in our country. Although he did not attend culinary school, he worked in different kitchens where he learned to merge flavors. When asked why anyone should visit Corazón de Alcachofa, he said, “This is

the only restaurant in the Polanco area that offers the concept of market cuisine; therefore, it does not have a printed menu, but rather rolling boards where the menu of the day and the number of dishes available are posted. As they are ordered, the dishes get deducted from the board because we only use organic and fresh products.” The artichoke (alcachofa) is a native African product, and the Spanish sailors brought it to America. In Mexico, it is mainly produced in Michoacán, Puebla and Guanajuato; however, the ones used in Corazón de Alcachofa are brought from Texcoco every day. Although this vegetable is known in Mexico, its demand is relatively modest, so we asked Paco why the owners chose the artichoke to be the soul of the restaurant. He replied: “For us it is a very versatile vegetable. We take it as a flagship dish because nobody uses it like

us. We wash and disinfect it; we boil and marinate it with chimichurri that we cook here. We grill it with mesquite firewood, and we serve it with a sweet and salty dressing. We also prepare it in soups and salads, and a cut of meat bears its name. It is a very generous vegetable; so much so that soon we will integrate it in our pastry menu.”
At Corazón de Alcachofa the menu is planned every day, and it has, at the very least, seven different dishes that include artichoke in their preparation. You can also find delicious homemade pasta that is prepared in the restaurant, cuts of meat and, for those who like sweet things, an excellent dessert menu. We recommend the grilled artichoke as a starter with the salty dressing, but if you have a sweeter palate, you will certainly love the honey one. As a main course, you can order a cut of meat, they will serve it to the degree of doneness of your preference and with exceptional flavor. For dessert, a panna cotta with red berries or a pavlova. From Friday to Sunday, they serve breakfast. If you give yourself the chance to visit this restaurant, it will become one of your favorites. ot long ago, people chose their hairstyle based on fashionable trends or personal taste. It did not seem necessary to consider the way you dress, nor was it sought to have an integral image. Today, we know that our hairstyle says a lot about our personality. And finally, this branch of fashion is given the importance it deserves. Jonathan Mas is a prominent Spanish businessman and stylist. He got into styling almost by chance. Jonathan was studying architecture, and on a summer vacation, helping a friend out in her hair salon, he began to see that the things that caught his attention, such as chemistry, geometry, and art, merged with styling. He realized that he could cultivate these disciplines every day to create beautiful hairstyles. Was leaving architecture for styling a radical decision? In the end, there are connections between both disciplines. One of them is the artistic side, because in both we must create in our head the result we want to get before doing it with our hands. Both are very similar in their approaches, although different in the raw material. What spring-summer trends will there be this year? Fashion is cyclical. Now we are once again getting into the 90s and 70s trends for women. In hairstyles, we will see the bob; it will go from your jaw to your ear. The pixie cut (very short hair) will not be used as much, the long bob will become the clavie court and will be above your shoulders. Extra-long hair will return and with lots of layers. The brush and the dryer are going to be used for more volume, with light ends, not so pronounced. Among the 70s trends, we will see long fringes, much like Farrah Fawcett; those who have curly hair should take advantage of it, because it comes with hairstyles with faded layers. And in colors, we will continue to see techniques to create dimensions.

And in men? Straight hairstyles are back, not so short, more like in the 90s. Urban cuts are not trendy right now; however, we will begin to see them. More wax will be used without much shine, squarer sideburns, and clean necks. What led you to open your salon in Mexico? It has been several years since I opened my first hair salon in the Juárez neighborhood. I needed to have my own space because when I started hairstyling, I had different techniques and a different concept of the profession than those of other salon owners. I understood that my way of working would not suit them. Recently, I opened a second branch in Lomas de Chapultepec.
What has living in Mexico meant to you? Everything. For me, Mexico is my home. I arrived seventeen years ago, and although I have traveled extensively and lived in other parts of the world, I have never stopped being based here. I found a connection and a love here that I don’t have anywhere else. For me, this is my home, more than Spain. What would you say to someone who is visiting Mexico? Have fun, don’t be afraid. This is a wonderful place, and you are going to fall in love with it. If you come to live in the city, you must be open to have relationships with its people, because they are wonderful. Not everywhere you will find so much warmth. What place in Mexico City do you like in particular? Paseo de la Reforma is the most beautiful avenue I have ever seen. auricio is a young actor from Peru. He has participated in Like! and the third season of Luis Miguel: The Series, among other projects. A few years ago, he decided to move to Mexico City. Here, in addition to opportunities to develop his talent, he found a home. In his own words, “Mexico is a magical country and it makes you want to come back. I have traveled a lot in Latin America and Europe, and the way Mexicans treat foreigners is unmatched. They make you feel at home.” Let’s discover a little more about him through this interview. How is Mauricio at this point in his career? I can say that I am relatively good with myself now. I don’t have an acting project at the moment, but this break gave me the opportunity to visit my family in Italy and set aside time for music, which I’m also passionate about.

What has living in Mexico meant to you? I left home when I was 18 years old, and I knew perfectly well that I wanted to go live in Mexico City, because I saw it as the Los Angeles of Latin America. A place that gives you opportunities to study and fulfill dreams. As soon as I arrived, I fell in love with the country. I love its culture, the food and the people because they are very warm, they welcome you incredibly well. Now, I see Mexico as my home. What places would you recommend a foreigner to visit? Mexico has very beautiful destinations, such as beaches, and others with great history. From the outset, they should give themselves the opportunity to get to know the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean. If you like adventure, you can visit the Lacandona jungle in Chiapas. And the magical towns are places where you learn a lot about Mexican traditions. From Mexico City, what would you recommend? Teotihuacan. It is not inside the city, but it is a place nearby that you can visit.

What do you like about living in the south of the city? My friends are there, and something I like is that there is little traffic. It has its moments, but most of the time in the area where I live you can move around without a problem. When I go north or west of the city, the traffic usually goes in the other direction, so I can circulate perfectly. What was the first thing you visited when you arrived at CDMX? The pyramids of Teotihuacan. What would you recommend to someone who only has one day to visit Mexico City? Go to the trajineras in Xochimilco, the Basilica of Guadalupe and the House of Frida Kahlo. But what I like the most about CDMX is eating tacos; there is a taqueria in the Narvarte neighborhood that serves the best tacos with meat from the north part of the country. 25

Mexico City is somewhat complex to travel. We recommend that you organize your meetings in the same area where you are staying, so that you can walk there and thus avoid the city’s traffic. But if this is not possible, here we will tell you the different public transport available to you to move from one place to another.
Ecobicis
The CDMX government launched this form of transportation several years ago. You will find Ecobicis stations in different parts of the city. To use them, you must register at www.ecobici.cdmx. gob.mx, have a national or international official identification and a debit or credit card. There are pay plans from one day use to annual payment. Choose the one that suits you best. Membership covers trips up to 45 minutes; after that period of time, you will have an extra charge. Metro
The metro is one of the cheapest means of transportation in the city: the trip only costs 5 pesos and it doesn’t matter if you transfer to another line, they are not charged. The eleven lines of the network can take you from south to north, and from east to west.
Metrobus
There are five Metrobus lines. Line 1 takes you from the north to the south part of the city, circulating on Avenida de los Insurgentes. Line 4 goes through the city center and takes you to the airport. The ticket costs 6 pesos, and if you go to the airport, the cost is 30 pesos.
Important: if you take a taxi, let it be from a dispatch site. And if you use apps, always check the license plates and let someone else know your itinerary.
