French grandeur in Mexico

owards the end of the 19th century, the city was expanding slowly but relentlessly, radiating from downtown towards the four cardinal points. The process began with the urbanization of neighboring towns where there were country houses. Tacubaya was an area endowed with water, to which there were rest farms and large-scale haciendas. The family of Mr. Vicente Escandón and Mrs. Guadalupe Arango de Escandón sold extensive land that they had acquired from the Countess of Miravalle. The set of main buildings of the hacienda was located where the Russian Embassy is now, on Revolución Avenue.

The buyers set aside a 300,000-square-meter plot of land for the construction of a racecourse that would replace the Peralvillo racecourse, which had been in operation since 1882. The new La Condesa Racecourse was inaugurated in 1910 and operated until 1923, when the land was divided and 100,000 square meters were preserved as a green area. Today, Parque México (Mexico Park) is in that space, initially called San Martín. The park is surrounded by a circular avenue, which was part of the racecourse track and was aptly called Hipódromo Avenue; later its name changed to Amsterdam. The Colonia Condesa, in addition to its fame as an intellectual neighborhood, full of restaurants, cafes, bookstores and cultural spaces, is noteworthy for its

architecture, of which interesting examples have been preserved. Walking through Parque México we can find works by great architects of the last century, who used the dominant styles of the time. Art Deco (derived from the great Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, ‘International Exhibition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art,’ held in Paris in 1925) set the trend with a style full of comfort, moving away from unnecessary luxury and taking advantage of modern techniques and materials such as glass, cement and iron. Architects such as Juan Segura, Luis Barragán, Ernesto Buenrostro and Francisco J. Serano designed and built works that pay homage to the architecture of the first half of the 20th century. On Mexico Avenue, the Basurto Building, built in 1942, is a marvel of urban quality. Its vestibule, in the shape of a horseshoe and which extends over eleven floors through a staircase, has been the setting of Mexican and foreign films. 8 Distrito hospitality

Walking down Amsterdam Avenue, we can find well-preserved architectural gems that still have their original appearance intact. On Sonora Avenue, we have another park, known as Parque España (Spain Park) in remembrance of the Spanish migration during their Civil War. It is difficult to describe the pleasure of walking through one of the best neighborhoods in Mexico City, which along with Colonia Roma preserves a lot of history of the beginning of the urban formation of the great Mexican capital. Some of its streets display traces of the finest urban planning. From Parque España, take Veracruz Avenue, and upon reaching Mazatlán, turn right. There, the Condesa Building, erected in 1911 by the Canadian architect Thomas Sinclair Gore, gives us another example of the cosmopolitan character of the area, full of beautiful art deco, art nouveau and Californian style architecture.

o you feel like chatting with your friends or working in a relaxed environment for a few hours? Then the Blend Station is for you. Since its creation, this restaurant-cafeteria had very clear objectives. One of them is to make the high-end quality coffee produced in our country known to the world. They achieved this by working hand in hand with Mexican producers, guaranteeing fair treatment and improving coffee processes to obtain unique coffee blends, which are later prepared in their restaurants using different methods or put on sale for you to take home. Another goal was to make their customers feel like they matter the most, and they really do. You can choose the sit you like the most to relax or let inspiration come to you.
What sets them apart form their competition? They do their own roasting and blends, so you always have a great cup of coffee on your table. They also have a rich and varied menu for breakfast and lunch. The kitchen service closes at six in the evening, and you can order from a sweet bread, an açai bowl, waffles, avocado toast or molletes to fresh seared tuna salad. This restaurant venture began some time ago in the gastronomic heart of the Condesa neighborhood, in 60 Tamaulipas Ave., and thanks to its great concept today they have three other branches: on 282 Amsterdam Ave. – one of the most beautiful streets in this neighborhood, a few steps away from Parque México –; in 237 Puebla St. almost on the corner with Medellín, in the Roma neighborhood, and they opened their latest branch on 257 Horacio St. in Polanco. Give yourself the opportunity to know Blend Station. Plus, the place is pet friendly. · 60 Tamaulipas Street, Condesa. · 282 Amsterdam Street, Condesa. · 237 Puebla Street, Roma. · 257 Horacio Street, Polanco. Antara, Trends around the city /
quite an experience
T
his shopping center opened its doors almost twenty-two years ago, and during this time it has filled its visitors with happiness. Antara was designed by the Mexican architect Javier Sodo Madaleno, one of the best developers of shopping centers and hospitals in our country. Antara, which means “heart” in Sanskrit, represents an evolution of its surroundings. Its creation gave way to the urban regeneration of the area, due to its design being based on an open space, which broke with conventional architectural forms for a shopping center. It took the risk of not having department stores as anchors, with the intention of preserving a more welcoming atmosphere, and became a new urban center, integrating public spaces, green areas, shops, and offices. The mall offers a unique outdoor space and a balance between beauty, glamour and style, where shopping becomes a unique experience. Here, a day

Mar Bonnelly: I am not from here... /
Mexico opened doors for me I didn’t know anyone here, but I said to myself: “I’m going to go, and I’ll take advantage of this opportunity they’re giving me.” It was a one-year workshop, and the classes were from eight in the morning to eight at night. How has it been for you to live in such a large country, coming from a nation like the Dominican Republic? My country has 11 million people throughout its territory, because we also share an island with Haiti. Twice as many people live in Mexico City alone. But the truth is I feel that Dominicans and Mexicans are very similar because both are very warm people. Although I missed my family very much, I felt very welcomed. What would you say to a foreigner visiting Mexico City? Number one, if a Mexican tells you that something isn’t spicy, don’t listen to them: your mouth is going to burn. Two, don’t listen to everything the press says or what TV shows want to sell you about this beautiful country. Personally, I feel very good here. I think sometimes they want to scare foreigners a little with that but living here has nothing to do with it. I walk here alone, obviously I take precautions just like in any other country, but it is a very beautiful country with amazing people.

ar Bonnelly is a young Dominican actress who came to Mexico to study acting at CEA. She recently played Xiomara in the soap opera, Divided Love, starring Eva Cedeño and Gabriel Soto. Let’s get to know Mar’s impressions of Mexico in this interview.
How did you make the decision to come to Mexico? Because I wanted to study acting. I have always been very inclined towards the arts, communication and singing. In 2016, I made the decision, I did a casting for CEA and I was accepted. I had never been to Mexico, although I always had the illusion of traveling to his wonderful country. Coming was literally an adventure,

What place do you like the most in Mexico City, besides your home? I love La Mexicana park in Santa Fe. I like to sit there and look at the sky. For walking, there is nothing like La Condesa neighborhood; I fell in love with that area, it has many nice places, cafes to sit and read for a while. Mexico in general is a very culturally rich country. What other places, apart from Mexico City, have you visited? I loved Isla Mujeres in Cancun; the beaches remind me a lot of the Dominican Republic. Obviously, I also went to Acapulco, which is beautiful, Monterrey, a wonderful city too. I have not had the opportunity to do so much local tourism, I want to know more beaches in Mexico. After Divided Loves, what would you like to do? For now, I see myself doing more TV, but I want to venture into cinema and theater. At CEA, we have put on several plays directed by Benjamín Cann.
