The Foundations of Mysticism

The Growth of Mysticism

The Flowering of Mysticism “Bountiful, detailed, and exhaustive. Covers the rich terrain of Franciscan mysticism and introduces female mystics great and small. McGinn expands immensely an area previously including only the well-known, such as Hadewijch of Antwerp and Mechthild of Magdeburg. Literate, scholarly, and profound.”—Library Journal 978-0-8245-1743-4 pb $49.95 / 542 pages

“Bernard McGinn’s indispensable volume Mysticism in the Reformation (1500-1650) advances his survey of Western Mysticism. By basing his survey on strict philological method, he resurrects the living voices of the mystics while incorporating their thought in the history of literature and ideas.” —Andrew Weeks, University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana

“In this latest volume Bernard McGinn continues his brilliant elucidation of mystical trends and individual mystics that figure the extraordinary differentiated and plural reality of the history of Western mysticism. McGinn does alone what is commonly believed only an army of specialists could plausibly attempt, and exceeds what could be imagined for them.” —Cyril O’Reagan, University of Notre Dame

“Beauty is moral as well as physical; It encompasses the heart as much as it radiates from the face. At once inner and outer, it is expressed as ihsan and jamal in Arabic, but its appeal crosseslinguistic and creedal barriers, nowhere with more imagination and creative good will than in this volume of essays.Multiple authors have brought together their experience and perspectives to produce a chrysalis of hope, a crescent of light for all who seek beauty in their lives and our troubled world.” —Bruce B. “In times when misunderstanding, suspicion, prejudice and violence are higher than ever, openness to beauty can been seen as the way to escape narrowness and bigotry on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to embrace the other and develop a theology of community. As such, the everlasting beauty of God will have a profound impact on the everyday life of peoples of diverse backgrounds. In the Christian tradition, “the beauty of God has been shown to us in a supreme way in Jesus Christ, the ‘epiphany of God’s loving kindness’ (Titus 3:4).” Yet at the same time, in light of the Biblical teaching that God created human beings in his own image (Genesis 1:27), a theology of beauty can open up to ecumenical dialogue among all mankind. In Islam, it is said in the Qur’an that “to God belong the most beautiful names” (Q.59:24). The beauty of God’s face, the Qur’an asserts, will forever remain (Q.55:27). The Muslim prophet, Muhammad, is reported to have said, “God is beautiful and he loves beauty.” The saving of souls through beauty is also a major theme in the Buddhist tradition.” (from the text)

Any list of emotions characterizing true Christian spirituality must include joy. In his two volumes, Luke summons his audience to joy-filled living in personal and community life. This study supplements a dearth of biblical and theological attention to the topic of joy.Luke’s paired volumes show people encountering the numinous (supernatural) world through a plethora of charismatic experiences with the divine. These experiences include angelic visitations, visions, healings, and baptism in the Spirit. Within the broad canon of Scripture, Luke draws his readers into the affective experiences of others. In examining biblical texts, interpreters must not ignore important features like the emotional atmosphere, the charismatic experiences of individuals and groups, and their expressions of joy. Embracing these features supports the reality that God wills joy for his people. This study will show that Luke links charismatic encounters with the Christian experience of joy, confirmed by the repeated references to joy in the text. Numerous texts reflect an atmosphere, experience, and expression of joy, all intended to attract readers, then and now, to joyful living, as persons and communities of faith. Thus, Luke argues for a “lived theology” of joy when people encounter the supernatural world.

Resisting the typical, dry methods of contemporary scholarship, this powerful examination revisits the biblical days of life-and-death conflict, struggles for power between popes and kings, and secret alliances of intellectuals united by a desire to pit worldly goals against the spiritual priorities of the church. This account looks beyond the pretense of neutrality and objectivity often found in secular study, and brings to light the appropriation of scripture by politically motivated interpreters. Questioning the techniques taken for granted at divinity schools worldwide, their origins are traced to the writings of Machiavelli and Marsilio of Padua, the political projects of Henry VIII, Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke, and the quest for an empire of science on the part of Descartes and Spinoza. Intellectual and inspiring, an argument is made for bringing Christianity back to biblical literacy.

Scott W. Hahn holds the Fr. Michael Scanlan Chair of Biblical Theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenvile, where he’s taught since 1990. He is also the Founder and President of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, and the author/editor of over forty books, including Kinship by Covenant, The Kingdom of God as Liturgical Empire, Canon and Biblical Interpretation, Covenant and Communion, The Catholic Bible Dictionary, and The Lamb’s Supper. Presenting practical strategies for reform and renewal of the Church, this strikingly direct volume brings together the voices of leading Catholic theologians who offer ideas for change while still showing that feminist reflection can work in support of the Church. With insightful essays on a wide range of complex topics—from Catholic sexual ethics in the 21st century and practical theology in global Christian contexts to race, class, and gender and the next generation of faithful women—this inspirational anthology provides an exciting perspective into the lives of practicing women and the particular challenges they face within the Church. Contributors include Susan Abraham, Karen A. Barta, Rosemary P. Carbine, Francine Cardman, and M. Shawn Copeland, among many others.

An Apocalypse of Love is a collection of essays on the many facets of Cyril O’Regan’s work to date written by both prominent and rising scholars in the fields of philosophy and theology. Essay topics included in this volume range over his entire corpus, including appreciatively critical analyses of his early and current work on Hegel, rhetorical and pedagogical styles, spiritual theology, engagement with Hegel and Heidegger, von Balthasar and John of the Cross, kenosis, Eric Voegelin, his relation to post-moderns such as Lacan and Bataille, and poetry both published and unpublished.

“This is a superior collection of essays, amounting to a kind of Platonic form of the Festschrift … This volume of essays walks and talks like a Festschrift but many of the contributors go so far beyond the regular brief for such volumes that they establish a kind of dazzling, superior norm for the genre.” —Francesca Murphy, University of Notre Dame

Jennifer Newsome Martin is an assistant professor in the Program of Liberal Studies (Great Books) with a concurrent appointment in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. A philosophical discussion about the Armenian genocide

The Remaining Challenges of the Second Vatican Council for the 21st Century looks at the outcome of the Second Vatican Council 50 years after its conclusion. The main question is what we can learn from this epochal assembly today and for the rest of the 21st century. On 8 December 1965, the Second Vatican Council concluded, yet fifty years later its mission is far from being complete. The question of the authority of the Pastoral Council was sometimes minimized and the spirit of the Council was often determined in diverse ways. The numerous national and international theological conferences and publications in the years 2012-15 showed clearly that the Second Vatican Council is understood by the overwhelming majority of theologians as an epochal orientation of the Church, as a gift of the Spirit. In the last 50 years, political, societal, economic, technical and other changes and processes have occurred in ways that the Council could not have foreseen. The church and its theology are challenged today to further extend the basic theological lines of the Second Vatican Council into the coming century.

The Sins of the Fathers

We hear much talk today about post-truth. Journalists and intellectuals describe it as a shocking new phenomenon caused by recent electoral campaigns. They point to contemporary political statements as horrendous post-truths. Nothing is more misleading. ‘Historical engineering’ is not a new phenomenon. Nor are the events to which journalists point as exemplary instances of ‘post-truth’ particularly poignant. ‘Historical engineering’ is the intellectual twin of ‘social engineering’ and has been taking place on increasingly larger scales since the dawn of the modern world. It is a consequence of the premises, methods, and ambitions of modern philosophy. This book is the first part of a trilogy – The Betrayal of Philosophy – that concerns the roots of the post-truth phenomenon. Its intent is to provide the philosophical world with a phantasm in which it can see not just the what A Herder & Herder book of ‘historical engineering,’ but the why: to show 978-0-8245-2378-7 pb the flaws of modern philosophy itself. Catholic Press Award Winner. The Crossroad Publishing Company presents the first volume of The Church in the 21st Century series sponsored by Boston College. This volume includes original contributions by figures such as Robert P. Imbelli, Mary Johnson, William D. Dinges, Paul J. Griffiths, Luke Timothy Johnson, Robert Barron, Robert Louis Wilken, Michael J. Himes, Christopher and Deborah Ruddy, Terrence W. Tilley, Thomas Groome, Bishop Blase Cupich, and John C. Cavadini.

Holy Saturday is a clear and reasoned discussion that concludes that it is entirely within the Church’s power, authority, and tradition to restore its practice of ordaining women to the diaconate. In this lucid discussion, Dr. Zagano considers theological anthropology, sacramental theology, ecclesiology, historical and ecumenical sources, and contemporary understandings of the permanent diaconate. This groundbreaking book explores the possibility of ordaining women to the permanent diaconate in the Catholic Church as a response from tradition that would permanently incorporate women into the teaching, sanctifying, and governing roles of the Church.

“The arguments for women’s ordination to the diaconate have been circulating for a number of years, indeed centuries. What is Zagano’s original contribution to this important ecclesial discussion and debate? In my opinion, it is simply this: She writes in a synthetic way for a new generation and for a new millennium.” —Margaret Eletta Guider, O.S.F., associate professor of religion and society at Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Cambridge, MA

Phyllis Zagano is a founding co-chair of the Roman Catholic

The Renewal of Mystical Theology is a memorial volume of important, original essays honoring the life and work of the late John N. Jones. John was a major figure in the renewal of mystical theology in the contemporary world, partly through his own writings, but especially through his generous help and sagacious care in soliciting, editing, and producing a wide range of books on spirituality and mysticism. John was an academic, trained in the critical study of religion at Yale University, after which time he became one of the country’s leading editors in the field of mysticism. Although he published important essays on Dionysius, John’s real vocation as a nurturer of the revival of interest in mystical theology emerged during his years as editor. The volume will appeal to teachers and students involved in Christian mysticism, as well as clergy, intellectuals and educated lay readers. College and university instructors, as well as seminarians, can use the essays as a valuable teaching tool.

Bernard McGinn is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor Emeritus in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. He is the author of Anti-Christ, Early Christian Mystics, The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism, and The Mystical Thought of Meister Eckhart. In addition, he is sole author of the brilliant The Presence of God: A History of Western Christian Mysticism series. Previous volumes in the series include The Flowering of Mysticism: Men and Women in the New Mysticism 1200-1350; The Foundations of Mysticism: Origins to the Fifth Century; The Growth of Mysticism: Gregory the Great through the 12th Century; The Harvest of Mysticism in Medieval Germany; and The Varieties of Vernacular Mysticism 1350-1550. He lives in Chicago.

A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-2188-2 cloth $29.95 / 300 pages 978-0-8245-2223-0 ebook $28.99

From Christianity’s very beginning, it has had a difficult relationship with the world of money. Through developing sophisticated understandings of the nature and wealthcreating capacity of capital, Christian theologians, philosophers, and financiers exerted considerable influence upon the emergence and development of the international financial systems that helped unleash a revolution in the way the world thinks about and uses capital. In For God and Profit, Samuel Gregg underscores the different ways in which Christians have helped to develop the financial and banking systems that have helped millions escape poverty for hundreds of years. But he also provides a critical lens through which to assess the workings—and failures—of modern finance and banking. Far from being doomed to producing economic instability and periodic financial crises, Gregg illustrates that how Christian faith and reason can shape financial practices and banking institutions in ways that restore integrity to our troubled financial systems.

The meeting between the Divine and humans is experienced in greatest measure in the liturgy of the Eucharist mediated through the role of the priest. Igbo religion and culture offer surprising aspects that invite ecclesiastical consideration for a profound worship. Starting with the priesthood and sacrificial ritual in the Igbo tribe which is the seed-bed of Christianity in Nigeria, and suggesting areas in the Igbo culture and tradition that may be enculturated into the church’s worship, this book contributes to giving Christ and the Church a true home in Igboland.

“I realized again the significance of that liturgical gesture at every Mass in which the priest or deacon mingles, at the preparation of the gifts, a few drops of water with the wine and prays quietly: “By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ Who humbled Himself to share in our humanity.” The water that represents our humanity is to be elevated to the divinity of Christ so that we become one in Him. At Mass and in Christ, you and I are to become an acceptable offering to the Father.” —Edward J. Slattery, Bishop of Tulsa

Samuel Gregg is research director at the Acton Institute. He writes and speaks regularly on morality and economics. How Pope John Paul II Transformed Catholic-Jewish Relations His Complete Texts on Jews, Judaism and the State of Israel 1979-2005 Pope John Paul II’s efforts can serve as a model for reconciliation, inspiring both believers and non-believers to pursue deeper understanding and work together in harmony to help improve the world and achieve Shalom, the Hebrew word for Peace, wholeness and right-relationship, for all of humankind.

“A must read for everyone interested in the positive and historic role Pope John Paul II played in Catholic-Jewish relations. Leon Klenicki and Eugene Fisher have rendered an important service that will be an indispensable tool for future generations.” —Rabbi A. James Rudin, author, Christians & Jews-Faith to Faith:

The Complete Mystical Works of Meister Eckhart Translated by Maurice O’C Walshe With a Foreword by Bernard McGinn

HERDER & HERDER

The Saint for Shalom

Meister Eckhart

For the first time, you can own Meister Eckhart’s complete mystical teachings in one volume. With a new introduction by Bernard McGinn and Walshe’s elegant translation, this comprehensive and authoritative work is a blessing for every serious spiritual seeker, and the finest volume on Eckhart ever to appear in English. Meister Eckhart, the great Christian mystical writer and philosopher, presented his works in two forms. The Latin works introduce his thought in more analytic detail and precision. He used his German (vernacular and popular) works to introduce his more personal reflections—his mystical writings on the poverty of spirit, the birth of Christ in the soul, and other themes for which he is renowned. This new treasury contains the entire text of all the mystical works of Meister Eckhart, making it the authoritative volume on Meister Eckhart’s enduring legacy to Western Christianity and to all seekers of truth. FROM THE COMPLETE MYSTICAL WORKS OF MEISTER ECKHART:

“If mysticism in the traditional Western sense implies communion with God, then there is a real sense in which Eckhart may be said to go beyond this, for according to him the soul has to proceed beyond ‘God’ to the nameless Oneness of the ‘Godhead.’ ... Eckhart speaks with authority born of personal experience. But the ‘object’ of that experience is strictly indescribable and ineffable. It can be hinted at and to some extent defined by what it is not. This, of course, is the way of the socalled negative (or apophatic) theology.” —from the introduction by Maurice O’C Walshe

Honored four times for book excellence by the Catholic Press Association, these titles reflect the work of the C21 Center at Boston College, providing a catalyst for renewal in the Catholic Church in the United States by engaging critical issues facing the Catholic community. The Church in the 21st Century Center at Boston College seeks to be a catalyst and resource for the renewal of the Catholic Church in the United States by engaging critical issues facing the Catholic community. Drawing from both the Boston College community and others, its activities currently are focused on four challenges: handing on and sharing the Catholic faith, especially with younger Catholics; fostering relationships built on mutual trust and support among laymen and women, vowed religious, deacons, priests, and bishops; developing an approach to sexuality mindful of human experience and reflective of Catholic tradition; and advancing contemporary reflection on the Catholic intellectual tradition. 30

The Companions to the New Testament Series aims to unite New Testament study with theological concerns in a clear and concise manner. The contributors to the series are established scholars who have studied and taught the New Testament for many years and who can now reap a wide-ranging harvest from the fruits of their labors. Multiple theological perspectives and denominational identities are represented. “This study blends historical background with social scientific analysis and a careful reading of the NT texts… establishing that the NT writers alert/ urge their communities to adopt a critical and evaluative stance toward the Roman imperium.” —Barbara Green, Professor of Biblical Studies, Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology

Marcion and Prometheus

“This brilliant book is a contribution not only to von Balthasar scholarship but also to the wider world of interreligious dialogue. Professor Sciglitano aids all theologians to understand the value of von Balthasar for a Christian understanding of interreligious dialogue by fo cusing on von Balthasar’s highly original and central theology of Judaism. A stunning achievement. —David Tracy, Author, Dialogue with the Other: The Inter-Religious Dialogue
