SPEAKER

“Lee penetrates the significance that Ellacuría assigns to salvation in history. He helps us to see that the profound immersion in historical reality of Ellacuría’s thought and life is owed precisely to that role that Ellacuría attributes to the transcendence of God the liberator. In the midst of the difficult situation of conflict in his country, where he decided to live (and die), Ellacuría was able to nourish the hope of a crucified people, as he said. According to Paul Ricoeur, theology is born of the intersection between a space of experience and a horizon of hope. The keen, mature analysis of Michael Lee, which expounds a complex system of thought with great clarity, places the theology of Ignacio Ellacuría in that perspective.” —Gustavo Gutierrez (from the foreword)

Sacrifice is fundamental to Christian life Erin Lothes Biviano

The Paradox of Christian Sacrifice The Loss of Self, The Gift of Self

SPEAKER

This recognized work offers a much needed, revised understanding of authentic sacrifice in terms of dedication to others for the reign of God. Sacrificial self-giving becomes a means to Christian identity—a paradoxical way to find life in the fullest. “This excellent, thought-provoking work acknowledges the importance of feminist criticisms of self-sacrifice and, in drawing upon the work of Edward Schillebeeckx and Paul Ricoeur, explores healthy ways in which this central Christian ideal can be understood. An important contribution to constructive theology.” —Leo D. Lefebure, Matteo Ricci Chair, Georgetown University 978-0-8245-2456-2 $39.95 pb / 304 pages

“The first book on Christian sacrifice that not only faces up to its negative distortions and confusing complexity, but also begins to do justice to it as a profoundly positive and fulfilling personal experience. A must-read.” —Robert J. Daly, S.J., Professor Emeritus of Theology, Boston College

Erin Lothes Biviano received her doctorate in systematic theology from Fordham University. She holds a master’s degree in theology from Boston College and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Princeton University. Erin is an Earth Institute Fellow with the Center for the Study of Science and Religion at Columbia University.

SPEAKER

As Christianity becomes increasingly global in its membership and its practices, how will it deal with increasing tensions between the unity of the faith and the diversity of its expressions? How should the papal ministry of unity be exercised, so that, in the words of Pope John Paul II, “while in no way renouncing what is essential to its mission, [it] is nonetheless open to a new situation”? How can the relationships between local churches and the universal church be improved? Building upon the work of leading theologians over the past two centuries, particularly the Dominican ecumenist and papal consultor Jean-Marie Tillard, Christopher Ruddy’s The Local Church offers signposts to guide the Church as it responds to these and other challenges.

God, Evil, and Innocent Suffering A Theological Reflection

SPEAKER

Do people suffer only because they deserve to suffer? According to classical Christian belief, yes. John Thiel, however, insists that some people who suffer are truly innocent. Innocent suffering suggests a different way of thinking about God’s presence, including how God is not directly involved in human suffering and death. A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-1928-5 $19.95 pb / 192 pages

“John Thiel’s book provides the most compendious mapping and critical evaluation of the theological responses to the problem of innocent suffering that I know. Moreover, it does so with great economy and in a style that is clear, fresh, and engaging. Its critique of tendencies in classical and modern theology to evade the scandal of innocent suffering is especially compelling. Yet this book also offers a constructive and original alternative to traditional and modern accounts. It speaks to the God of promise, who announces the truth of God’s being with us, nothing less than the end of what divides, rends, and annihilates us.” —Cyril O’Reagan, University of Notre Dame

John E. Thiel is Professor of Religious Studies, Fairfield University. His other books include Imagination and Authority: Theological Authorship in the Modern Tradition, Nonfoundationalism, and Senses of Tradition: Community and Development in Catholic Faith. Twice a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Dr. Thiel is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Catholic Theological Society of America, and the American Theological Society.

“Breath-taking.” – Graham Ward, Regius Professor of Divinity, Oxford Cyril O’Regan

The Anatomy of Misremembering

Von Balthasar’s Response to Philosophical Modernity - Volume 1: Hegel

A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-2562-0 $39.95 pb / 688 pages

“With breath-taking ambition, matched with both erudition and a forensic incisiveness, O’Regan gathers together the premodern tradition and the fragments of it that modernity can never shake off, to prescribe a new basis for a genuinely post-modern theology.” —Graham Ward, Regius Professor of Divinity, Oxford

“In O’Regan’s telling, Balthasar plays the role of Irenaeus to the redoubtable giant of modern Gnosticism, Hegel. But O’Regan does more than offer an exposition here; he strengthens Balthasar’s case by offering indispensable genealogical detail and nuance to the original charge. It is hard to imagine a work approaching even one of these thinkers with the sort of mastery that this book brings to both. My only complaint is that I now have to wait for the volume on Heidegger!” —Rodney Howsare, Professor of Theology at DeSales University

Cyril O’Regan, PhD is the Huisking Chair of Theology at the University of Notre Dame where he teaches on the subjects of systematic, historical, and philosophical theology. His writings have been widely published and he is the author of Gnostic Apocalypse, Gnostic Return in Modernity, and The Heterodox Hegel.

SPEAKER

This compelling work is the most comprehensive and sophisticated account to date of the relationship between Hans Urs von Balthasar—a Swiss theologian and Catholic priest—and the German philosopher Georg Hegel. While underscoring the depth and breadth of Balthasar’s engagement with the philosopher, author Cyril O’Regan argues that Balthasar is the most concertedly anti-Hegelian theologian of the 20th century. For him, it is essential to engage Hegel because of his corrections of sclerotic forms of premodern Christian thought, but even more importantly to resist and correct his systematic thought, which represents a comprehensive misremembering of the Christian thought, practices, and forms of life. An important and original work, this book addresses a topic that puts the possibility of an authentic postmodern theology at stake.

Grammars of Resurrection A Christian Theology of Presence and Absence

HERDER & HERDER

Recipient of the College Theology Society’s Best Book of the Year Award (2010) First Place Award for Best Book in Theology from the Catholic Press Association (2010) This is a brilliant and original study of the doctrine of the Resurrection, incorporating much of the history of modern Christology, but set out in a fresh, remarkably elegant form by a young Catholic theologian. This work is likely to be at the center of theological discussion for years to come. “A valuable illustration of characteristics of a new generation of theologians—engaging contrasting schools of theology without polarizing polemics; exploring phenomenological, historical, and textual issues in a post-foundationalist, confessional manner; and confronting postmodern topics concerning the gift and body, identity and power.” —Bradford Hinze, Fordham University A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-2563-7 $29.95 pb / 456 pages

“Grammars of Resurrection will, I predict, establish Robinette as one of the best Catholic theologians of his generation. It demonstrates the workings of a powerfully synthetic theological mind and displays as pleasing a writing style as one is likely to find in a contemporary theologian.” —Cyril O’Regan, University of Notre Dame

“Brian Robinette brings together a stimulatingly wide range of reading and insight as he offers us a genuinely rich and dense account of Christ’s Resurrection and the way it opens out human understanding towards a re-imagination of Creation and of God’s beauty. In addition, the clarity and sober excitement with which he writes will surely attract readers into the vision he so compellingly spells out.” —James Alison, author of Faith Beyond Resentment and The Joy of Being Wrong

Brian D. Robinette joined the faculty at Boston College in 2012. Prior to that, he taught at Saint Louis University (2003-2012). He obtained his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the University of Notre Dame in 2003. He is married and has two sons.

The Promise of Christian Humanism Thomas Aquinas on Hope

A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-2469-2 $34.95 pb / 248 pages

“A lively and learned discussion of the most important topic of theological reflection in the present age—our understanding of God’s relation to humanity. This is a book that is a must-read for serious theologians, philosophers, and ethicists.” —Stephen Pope, Boston College

“Does hope in a transcendent God help or hinder human flourishing in the world?’ In this impressively lucid and wide-ranging study, Dominic Doyle explores some of the ways in which contemporary Christian humanism, drawing on Thomas Aquinas’ treatment of the virtue of hope, may respond to this question by seeking congruence between faith and reason, Christianity and culture.” —Nicholas Lash, Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity Emeritus, University of Cambridge

Dominic F. Doyle, Associate Professor in Systematic Theology, was born in London, England and holds a B.A. in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge, an M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School, and a Ph.D. from Boston College.

Marcion and Prometheus Balthasar Against the Expulsion of Jewish Origins from Modern Dialogue

A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-2016-8 $29.95 pb / 248 pages

“This brilliant book is a contribution not only to von Balthasar scholarship but also to the wider world of interreligious dialogue. Professor Sciglitano aids all theologians to understand the value of von Balthasar for a Christian understanding of interreligious dialogue by focusing on von Balthasar’s highly original and central theology of Judaism. A stunning achievement.” —David Tracy, Author, Dialogue with the Other: The Inter-Religious Dialogue

“Sciglitano offers here a rich and penetrating interpretation of Balthasar’s vision of the grandeur of creation. Philosophical and religious insights are deeply integrated into God’s extraordinary action in the history of Israel and in the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ... With this timely and highly readable book, Sciglitano incisively displays both the vitality of Balthasar’s vast biblical and theological vistas and, most importantly, their exceptional pertinence for contemporary thought and culture.” —Thomas G. HERDER & HERDER

This incisive, accessible study highlights Hans Urs von Balthasar’s response to ‘Promethean’ critics of Christianity from romantics such a Shelley to the philosophical likes of Feuerbach and Marx, focusing on these critics’ unrelenting rejection of the religious claims of historical Judaism. The attributes of the Christian God which such humanists find most unpalatable–such as fatherhood, authority, and transcendence—are precisely those that were inherited from Judaism. According to von Balthasar, such critics have inadvertently reinvented the patristic-era heresy of Marcionism, which posits a radical and false dichotomy between the message of the Hebrew bible and that of the New Testament.

HERDER & HERDER

“This crisp inquiry astutely engages Aquinas to show ‘that natural knowledge of God has a distinct place in his theology’, thus raising in a fresh way the question: what role does such knowledge play? A serene contribution to an ongoing debate, yielding further evidence of Aquinas’ abiding intellectual valence.” —David Burrell, C.S.C., Notre Dame University

Holy Saturday

An Argument for the Restoration of the Female Diaconate in the Catholic Church

SPEAKER

Holy Saturday is a clear and reasoned discussion that concludes that it is entirely within the Church’s power, authority, and tradition to restore its practice of ordaining women to the diaconate. In this lucid discussion, Dr. Zagano considers theological anthropology, sacramental theology, ecclesiology, historical and ecumenical sources, and contemporary understandings of the permanent diaconate. This groundbreaking book explores the possibility of ordaining women to the permanent diaconate in the Catholic Church as a response from tradition that would permanently incorporate women into the teaching, sanctifying, and governing roles of the Church. 978-0-8245-1832-5 $24.95 pb / 192 pages

“The arguments for women’s ordination to the diaconate have been circulating for a number of years, indeed centuries. What is Zagano’s original contribution to this important ecclesial discussion and debate? In my opinion, it is simply this: She writes in a synthetic way for a new generation and for a new millennium.” —Margaret Eletta Guider, O.S.F., associate professor of religion and society at Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Cambridge, MA

Phyllis Zagano is a founding co-chair of the Roman Catholic Studies Group of the American Academy of Religion—the world’s largest society of scholars of religion—and author or editor of fifteen books. She holds five academic degrees and has taught at major universities on the East Coast.

Bring the power of the Spirit to the work of life Edited by Michael Himes and Stephen Pope

Finding God in All Things Essays in Honor of Michael J. Buckley, S.J.

HERDER & HERDER

These essays deal with four major themes: the relationship between belief and unbelief, the connection between religion and science, the interpenetration of theology and spirituality, and the nature and value of higher education within the Catholic context—themes that reflect the persistent quest to discern the presence and action of God within the multiple dimensions of human existence. Convictions as authentic and generous as those expressed above naturally attract a most distinguished circle of companions and partners in dialogue. This volume gathers the valuable contributions of these eminent colleagues, who are responding to the same basic questions that have provided the motivation for the work of Michael J. A biblical and theological study of great relevance Paschal C. Mbagwu

Where God and Human Meet

HERDER & HERDER

The Paschal Mystery, Priesthood and Sacrifice Among the Igbos The meeting between the Divine and humans is experienced in greatest measure in the liturgy of the Eucharist mediated through the role of the priest. Igbo religion and culture offer surprising aspects that invite ecclesiastical consideration for a profound worship. Starting with the priesthood and sacrificial ritual in the Igbo tribe which is the seed-bed of Christianity in Nigeria, and suggesting areas in the Igbo culture and tradition that may be enculturated into the church’s worship, this book contributes to giving Christ and the Church a true home in Igboland. 978-0-8245-2219-3 $29.95 pb / 256 pages

“I realized again the significance of that liturgical gesture at every Mass in which the priest or deacon mingles, at the preparation of the gifts, a few drops of water with the wine and prays quietly: “By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ Who humbled Himself to share in our humanity.” The water that represents our humanity is to be elevated to the divinity of Christ so that we become one in Him. At Mass and in Christ, you and I are to become an acceptable offering to the Father.” —Edward J. Slattery, Bishop of Tulsa

After his ordination, Paschal C. Mbagqu served as a parochial vicar for a year. He also served as the Archdiocesan Master of Liturgical Ceremonies and taught in a minor seminary before proceeding for further studies. Rev. Mbagwu obtained a Licentiate and Doctorate degrees in Liturgical/Sacramental theology from the University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein, Illinois.

“Where is the silence?”–Meister Eckhart Meister Eckhart

The Complete Mystical Works of Meister Eckhart For the first time, you can own Meister Eckhart’s complete mystical teachings in one volume. With a new introduction by Bernard McGinn and Walshe’s elegant translation, this comprehensive and authoritative work is a blessing for every serious spiritual seeker, and the finest volume on Eckhart ever to appear in English.

Complete Edition

Meister Eckhart, the great Christian mystical writer and philosopher, presented his works in two forms. The Latin works introduce his thought in more analytic detail and precision. He used his German (vernacular and popular) works to introduce his more personal reflections—his mystical writings on the poverty of spirit, the birth of Christ in the soul, and other themes for which he is renowned. This new treasury contains the entire text of all the mystical works of Meister Eckhart, making it the authoritative volume on Meister Eckhart’s enduring legacy to Western Christianity and to all seekers of truth. A Herder & Herder book 978-0-8245-2517-0 $98.00 hc / 640 pages / metallicized jacket

FROM THE COMPLE TE MYSTIC AL WORK S OF MEISTER ECKHART:

“ If mysticism in the traditional Western sense implies communion with God, then there is a real sense in which Eckhart may be said to go beyond this, for according to him the soul has to proceed beyond ‘God’ to the nameless Oneness of the ‘Godhead.’ ... Eckhart speaks with authority born of personal experience. But the ‘object’ of that experience is strictly indescribable and ineffable. It can be hinted at and to some extent defined by what it is not. This, of course, is the way of the so-called negative (or apophatic) theology.” —from the introduction by Maurice O’C Walshe

Henri de Lubac

Odo Casel

Originally published in French in 1965, this work develops the core thesis that Henri de Lubac put forward many years earlier in a bold and controversial work in which he first called into question the idea of “pure nature.”

The companion volume to The Mystery of the Supernatural, Augustinianism and Modern Theology offers insight into the core of de Lubac’s enormous theological vision—a vision that in Louis Dupré’s words, “has transformed the course of Catholic thinking in our time.”

This essay presents, in clear, nontechnical language, the heart of Casel’s theology of mystery, summing up his view that the encounter with the divine mystery in liturgy is “the most central and most essential action of the Christian religion.”

His tireless efforts brought a spirit of peace to an extremely tense and volatile situation. Before settling in El Salvador, Brackley taught at Fordham University and was employed by South Bronx People for Change, a church-sponsored group that offered rehabilitation programs to drug addicts, helped tenants organize, and mediated community and law enforcement disputes. Brackley died of cancer after 11 years of teaching, writing, and devoted service in El Salvador. His life is a testament to his transformative vision for personal and social change in the world.

A formidable book at a pivotal time Samuel Gregg

For God and Profit

How Banking and Finance Can Serve the Common Good With a forward by George Cardinal Pell

CROSSROAD

From Christianity’s very beginning, it has had a difficult relationship with the world of money. Christian theologians, philosophers, and financiers have exerted considerable influence upon the emergence and development of the international financial systems, helping unleash a revolution in the way the world thinks about and uses capital. In For God and Profit, Samuel Gregg underscores the different ways in which Christians have helped to develop the financial and banking systems that have helped millions escape poverty for hundreds of years. He also provides a critical lens through which to assess the workings— and failures—of modern finance and banking. Gregg illustrates how Christian faith and reason can shape financial practices and banking institutions in ways that restore integrity to our troubled financial systems. 978-0-8245-2188-2 $29.95 hc / 300 pages

“For God and Profit is a formidable book, packed with interesting and regularly unacknowledged and unknown historical information, especially about the contribution of Christian thinking to the development of banking, the rise of the markets and Western prosperity. It is also closely argued with Christian and natural law categories of right and wrong being used to evaluate the economies and financial systems of today and yesterday.” —Cardinal George Pell, Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, Vatican City Samuel Gregg is an author, speaker, and research director at the Acton Institute. He lectures regularly on faith, morality, and economics. He is the author of several books including his prize-winning The Commercial Society. He publishes in journals such as The Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy; Journal of Markets & Morality; Economic Affairs; Law and Investment Management; Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics and Public Policy; Evidence; Ave Maria Law Review; Oxford Analytica; Communio; Journal of Scottish Philosophy; University Bookman; Foreign Affairs; and Policy. His opinion-pieces have appeared in the Wall Street Journal Europe; National Review; Public Discourse; American Spectator; Australian Financial Review; and Business Review Weekly. He holds an MA in political philosophy from the University of Melbourne, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in moral philosophy and political economy from the University of Oxford.

Óscar Andrés RodrÍguez Maradiaga, SDB, is a Honduran cardinal of the Catholic church. He is the archbishop of Tegucigalpa, the president of Caritas Internationalis, and the former president of the Latin American Episcopal Conference. CROSSROAD

A truly Christian perspective on global economic inequality from a prominent Cardinal and close ally of Pope Francis. In this treatise, author Cardinal Rodríquez Maradiaga, one of the most outspoken members of the Catholic hierarchy on this issue, offers a clear analysis of the expansion of economic inequality and its root causes, followed by a review of suggested solutions, and a hopeful outlook based on a new model of economic and human growth. Maradiaga asserts that it is imperative for any Christian community to look at the dire state of social justice in the world, and to work for positive change, requiring a clear understanding of the issues at hand, and a comprehensive practice based on the laws of ethics. A perfect book for anyone who is ready to study the urgent issue of social disparity, and willing to work for a better world.

A discussion of cyberspace, community and faith In Friending God, Antonio Spadaro SJ invites us into an eye-opening conversation about faith lived in digital culture. Each brief chapter is a pause and opportunity for wonder, reflection, discernment, and awareness of the transcendent reality that in germinal to both our experience of technology and human spirituality. True to the Jesuit charism, this book is committed to seek and find God in all things, as it seeks deeply and hopes wholeheartedly to encounter God and neighbor in our digital context. Written in brief, accessible yet content rich chapters, this book is ideal for discussion or study groups, adult faith formation, or for personal reflection.

Author of Connected Toward Communion:

“If you thought you understood what it means to minister in the digital world, think again. Fr. Antonio Spadaro brings a much-needed, theologically-focused perspective to social media and social communication technologies. It’s a perspective that goes well-beyond seeing the Internet as solely a place for evangelism. The lens through which Fr. Antonio helps us see cyberspace resonates with both the Patristic and Biblical foundations of the Church. In no uncertain terms, “Friending God” challenges us to realize an authentic Christian identity in cyberspace. It has beautifully radical implications for the Christian teaching of “who is my neighbor?” in the digital world. If you are in Christian ministry, this is a must-read.”

”Once in a while a book comes along that is “more than a book” and it changes your perceptions of reality in profound ways, rather than just providing information or entertainment. That happened for me in reading Friending God by Antonio Spadaro. This brief text is the most elegant prose work I have ever read on the spirituality of community as experienced via the Internet and in Social Media. We owe Fr. Spadaro a huge debt of gratitude for illuminating a deeper understanding of one of today’s most pervasive cultural realities and influences.” —Roy M. Carlisle, Acquisitions Director, The Independent Institute

FROM THE BOOK:

“…Technological development, when understood correctly, succeeds therefore in expressing our longing for ‘transcendence’ of the human condition and the life we actually live day to day. The same can be said of ‘cyberspace’ as well….. The believer is called to accomplish a task: to hold applied scientific research not as a ‘means’ (which would reduce these tools to mere ‘gasgets’) nor as expressions of a ‘will to power’ (which would turn these tools into weapons’), but rather to use this science to answer God’s call to form and transform creation.”

Near death experiences are not new, but never has doctor, working in Lourdes, and enlightened by deep respect for science and a faithful understanding of the 2,000 year old Catholic approach to life, developed such coherent, hopeful explanations. Near death experiences have been more talked about in secular and new age terms than in Christian circles. Dr. Theiller shows that they are not at all at odds with the teaching of the Church; on the contrary the Catholic Church, with its millennia of experiences of spiritual realities beyond what we see, has an important contribution to make to our deeper understanding of this widespread phenomenon. 978-0-8245-2217-9 $24.95 pb / 260 pages

Arnold Benz, a renowned astrophysicist and Christian, insists that human perception reaches further than science and demonstrates this in various examples, personal, biblical and literary. Cosmic fine-tuning and other coincidences are no proof of God, but are amazing, astounding and will never be fully explained. Amazement is the appropriate emotional perception of reality. It implies that the objective world is not a matter of course and may well not exist at all; thus reality, at times, is experienced to be very special. In such an “aha moment”, essentials like our lifetime, the beauty of nature, the habitability of planet Earth or the universe are sensed to be like undeserved gifts. In the light of such a gift experience, the universe is metaphorically interpreted and existentially believed as a divine Creation, thus becomes trustable and meaningful. Science cannot create such faith but can foster it.

The life-changing story of the pre-Civil War South William Kelley

Henriette Delille Servant of Slaves

CROSSROAD

In this new novel, Oscar-winning writer William Kelley, tells the true story of a young, southern, female quadroon who overcame the racial prejudice of the pre-civil war era to create a religious order dedicated to caring for destitute and dying blacks. Yearning to help the poorest of the poor in New Orleans, Henriette Delille tried to join charitable religious orders, but was turned away because of her “Negro blood.” Taking fate into her own hands she cofounded The Sisters of the Holy Family, an order that for over a century has led the fight to improving living conditions for African Americans in the southern United States. Henriette’s astonishing and inspirational story, told through a masterful interweaving of the narratives of her personal life and Father Etienne Rousselon’s, is a testimony to one woman’s devotion and her resulting ability to change the world around her. 978-0-8245-2216-2 $19.95 pb / 220 pages FROM THE PROLOGUE:

“Miss Henriette Delille had for long years consecrated herself totally to God without reservation to the instruction of the ignorant and principally to the slave. To perpetuate this kind of apostolate, so different yet so necessary, she had founded with the help of certain pious persons the House of the Holy Family, a house poor and little known except by the poor and the young, and which for the past ten or twelve years has produced, quietly, a considerable good which will continue. Having never heard of philanthropy, this poor maid has done more than the great philanthropists with their systems so brilliant yet so vain.” —New Orleans Tribune

William Kelley was the co-recipient of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the movie Witness. Born on Staten Island, N.Y., Kelley served in the Air Force in the late 1940s. He spent three years studying for the priesthood in the 1950s. Not surprisingly, his books and screenplays often deal with religious themes. A screenwriter, novelist, and TV scriptwriter with more than 150 credits, Kelley considered himself a simple man. “I’d rather drink a beer with a farmer, dockhand or a cowboy, or sit and talk with a kid from the streets of Philadelphia, than to have dinner with any president, prince or pope.”

“What if God really depends on us to manifest God’s love?” Barbara Fiand

Come, Drink Deep of Living Waters

Faith Seeking Understanding in the 21st Century

CROSSROAD

We live in a time of bridging that invites us to learn, then to accept with utmost respect, that what has provided us with a certain wisdom and security for several thousand years of movement around our star is today ebbing away and has, in fact, done so for at least a century. A time of bridging involves allowing for this realization and, with serenity, courage, and trust, seeking the footprints revealing who has walked among us unobserved all this time. Today this realization is lighting up with ever greater brilliance and being recognized and acknowledged with ever more urgency due to our scientific discoveries and spiritual insights. In this new book, with the wisdom of years, Barbara Fiand explores what time of bridging offers in new insights, and how we can understand our Christian faith in this new time. 978-0-8245-2196-7 $19.95 pb / 240 pages

“This book marks a paradigm shift between a faith of the past obsessed with certitude and finality and an organic evolutionary sense of faith beyond boundaries that isolate and paralyze us. In her attempt to bridge the divide, Barbara Fiand creates a bold, prophetic synthesis of Christian faith and a fresh articulation within the cosmic worldview of our day. For some it may be a bridge too far, but for a rapidly growing body of Christian seekers, it is a vision that will challenge and inspire, affirm and provoke. An invaluable resource for faith-filled discipleship in the 21st century.“ —Diarmuid O’Murchu, Priest, Psychologist, Author, and Specialist in Adult Faith Development

Barbara Fiand teaches spirituality at the Institute of Pastoral Studies of Loyola University Chicago and is the author of books that include From Religion Back to Faith: A Journey of the Heart, In the Stillness You Will Know: Exploring the Paths of Our Ancient Belonging, and On Becoming Who We Are. In Jesus’ Twin, a scholar shares his personal reflections into the Gospel of Thomas offering a learned, accessible introduction as well as inspiring insights into these ancient texts that have long stirred curiosity and inquiry. James Heisig, who has read and studied the texts throughout his distinguished career as a scholar and teacher of religions, shows that the reasons for excluding the Gospel of Thomas from the Christian tradition are largely meaningless for us today. After more than half a century of concerted dialogue with other traditions, we are in a better position to recognize that not every alter Jesus is a Jesus alias. At the same time, attention to the spiritual demands being made on Christianity by our present age helps draw us more deeply into the text itself and control the tendency to immunize ourselves against its discomforts, whether through the distractions of scholarly disputation or the preoccupation with preserving orthodoxy.

“I was making one of my occasional visits to talk with my archbishop when he told me that he was gathering together all his writings and other papers. He wanted to have them in order since he would turn 75 in December and so present his resignation to the Pope according to canonical norms.” — Gustavo Larrazabal, Editor of Jorge Bergoglio and of Open Mind, Faithful Heart. This is one of the few books initiated, written, gathered and edited by Pope Francis himself when he still had the time to do so. An invaluable treasure of profound insights into what Francis himself sees at the center of his spirituality and understanding of life, Open Mind, Faithful Heart demonstrates how a lifetime of work, prayer and reflection is bearing fruit in the extraordinary service and love Pope Francis is offering the church and the world.

“In a sea of books by, for, and about Pope Francis, this outstanding (and particularly attractive) volume by the Argentine Pontiff HIMSELF takes us inside his mind, heart and soul and gives us a blueprint for living, an example of how to live the Christian vocation. I highly recommend it!” —Deacon James Keating, Ph.D., Institute for Priestly Formation, Creighton University “I highly recommend this volume as instructive and illuminating spiritual reading for all audiences.” —Rev. Thomas Massaro, S.J. “I finished this book feeling that I knew Pope Francis better. The media may not find in this collection of essays the one-liners that are heard so often. But anyone who delves into this book will come away knowing that, indeed, the world has a pope with truly an open mind and a faithful heart.” —Deacon Michael E. Bulson, St. Andrew Parish, Riverton, Utah “Christians of any denomination will find this book by the reigning pontiff to be of great assistance in their personal spiritual journey. Intentionally composed to be useful in ordinary day-to-day situations, the monograph will be highly useful for individual prayer and meditation as well as serviceable to prayer and Bible study groups.” —Fr. Rick Gribble, C.S.C. “To read this volume is to get a strong sense of Francis’ own sense of mission and the way he is trying to offer his own path as a guide for others.” —Christopher M. Bellitto, Ph.D., author of 101 Questions And Answers On Popes And The Papacy 52

The book Jorge Bergoglio wrote POPE FRANCIS Jorge Mario Bergoglio

Open Mind, Faithful Heart Reflections on Following Jesus

This book is not just for reading. It is a path for prayer and a guide for life. Pope Francis connects with people, especially the young, the forgotten, and the forlorn. The cameras show him in Rome, in Brazil, in Lampedusa reaching out to the crowds, holding infants, embracing the disabled. What is the source of his energy and his spiritual vitality? This book is perhaps the best introduction to what makes the Pope the engaging pastor he is.

“The secret of Pope Francis is found in this book.” —Bishop Martinez Camino

FROM THE INTRODUCTION “Among the large number of publications that have appeared in the months since the conclave, we do well to distinguish between books ‘about’ the Pope and books ‘of ’ the Pope…the Pope’s own books, of which this is one, come directly from his own hand…These are the books that show us all the depth and breadth of Francis…” —Gustavo Larrazabal, CFM, The Editor of the Pope

During his years as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Bergoglio often spoke to those collaborating with him in pastoral ministry. His constant theme was how to follow Jesus unreservedly, even in the hectic turmoil of our modern world. The texts of these talks, handpicked by the author for this volume, reveal the spiritual depths of Pope Francis as perhaps no other work does. The strong scriptural orientation of the Pope is evident in the countless references to both old and new testament. To help the reader, this edition has supplemented the original text with appropriate scriptural citations. The language of these pages speaks to the heart as much as to the mind. These are meditations to be savored rather than just read quickly and filed away. 978-0-8245-2085-4 $24.95 pb / 320 pages E-book editions available

FROM THE BOOK “WE WILL NEVER be able to explain to our complete satisfaction the mysterious designs of God, who has wanted to reveal himself in the course of history. Over a long stretch of time we humans have been learning, like little children from their father, how to recognize and respond to the face of God. None of the Lord’s past revelations was partial; they all mysteriously contained the totality of the mystery of God in Christ; we perceived it only slowly, in bits and pieces. It is the same with our personal histories: the Lord reveals himself ‘historically’ in the unfathomable mystery of those who seek God and also in those who reject God and flee from him. That is to say, God reveals himself in the historical mystery of our movement through grace and sin.” WWW.CROSSROADPUBLISHING.COM

The Heart of Pope Francis

How a New Culture of Encounter Is Changing the Church and the World

CROSSROAD

The culture of encounter is like a map to the thoughts and feelings of Pope Francis. At the heart of his vision lies a keen interest in people, a passion for understanding the life experience of the other. By reaching out, welcoming, and listening to others, especially those at the margins, Pope Francis has already changed the Church more than we might even understand. This small book, written by a friend and fellow Jesuit who has worked for many years with Jorge Bergoglio, offers clear and encouraging insights to better understand and dare to follow the Pope. FROM TH E FO RE WO RD BY AN TO N IO SPADARO, S . J .

“I remember,” says Father Fares “the first conversation with Jorge took place at the headquarters of the Provincial Curia, an old, stately house in the neighborhood of Flores. I came from Mendoza, where I worked with the Jesuits in a poor neighborhood and the Office of the Provincial was striking me as quite wealthy, with old furniture and a good library. I think he understood because before leaving for the Novitiate, he wanted me to come along to get his coat. We climbed up to the terrace and he showed me where he lived: it was one of those little rooms that are usually found on the terrace of houses and are used as closets for brooms and junk. That day was cool and I noticed that the door did not keep out the cold. Since that day, my feelings and opinion of Jorge, especially on the coherence between what he says and what he lives, never changed. As says Peguy, friendship happens in a moment.” Jorge and Diego have been friends for almost forty years. To read the pages of this book, therefore, is to enter into the veins of a friendship that has developed over time on a spiritual and intellectual level, within a pastoral and social context. In a recent interview when I asked Diego Fares about the future of the Church he said: “The arrival of Francis is a time of consolation, not only of the Church but throughout the world. We live what St. Ignatius describes as consolation: an increase of hope, of faith and charity, inner joy that calls and leads the Gospel and all those things that are good for the soul…”

The “Heart” of the Christian Spiritual life Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V.

Discernimiento de espiritus

(Discernment of Spirits) CROSSROAD

An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living

St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, is one of the most influential spiritual leaders of all time, yet many readers find his Rules for Discernment hard to understand. What can Ignatius teach us about the discernment of spirits that lies at the very heart of Christian life? In The Discernment of Spirits, Fr. Timothy Gallagher, a talented teacher, retreat leader, and scholar, helps us understand the Rules and how their insights are essential for our spiritual growth today. By integrating the Rules and the experience of contemporary people, Gallagher shows the precision, clarity, and insight of Ignatius’s Rules, as well as the relevance of his thought for spiritual life today. When we learn to read Ignatius correctly, we discover in his remarkable words our own struggles, joys, and triumphs. 978-0-8245-2218-6 $24.95 pb / 232 pages

Gallagher meets the pressing needs of retreat directors, students of spiritual theology, and others interested in deepening their spiritual lives. I know of no comparable volume that proves so helpful.” —Harvey D. Egan, S.J., professor of systematic and mystical theology, Boston College (From the Foreword)

A remarkable teacher of Ignatian spirituality “ A clear, concise resource for presenting the freedom inherent in the structure of Ignatian prayer.” of Spiritual Direction

We asked Father Gallagher to expound on Ignatian spirituality and its benefits for spiritual directors. Here’s what he had to say: Why are the teachings of St. Ignatius beneficial for spiritual directors? Fr. Gallagher: “Many sensitive and sometimes complex issues arise in accompanying others in spiritual direction: issues of struggles, growth, and stages in prayer; experiences of consolation and desolation in the spiritual life; psychological wounds and relationship with God; discerning God’s will in significant life-choices; and so forth. Ignatius of Loyola, in a way all his own, provides clear teachings and tools to assist persons in these and many other situations. Generations of spiritual directors have turned to Ignatius and found in his teaching the clarity they needed in accompanying directees. Their experience explains why so many directors have turned and are turning to Ignatius today.”

How does a spiritual director develop the confidence to guide others through the exercises? Fr. Gallagher: “The best of all ways is for the spiritual director to experience the spiritual exercises personally as a retreat or through application of its elements— reflective meditation, imaginative contemplation, the examen prayer, the discernment of spirits, and so forth—in their own daily spiritual lives (the “Exercises in daily life”). When more formal study through reading, group sharing, online resources, Ignatian programs of training for spiritual direction, mentoring, and supervision, is added to this experience, directors learn the spiritual exercises deeply and develop the confidence to guide others through them.”

How is it that these teachings from hundreds of years ago are relevant for the busy, modern person seeking spiritual direction? Fr. Gallagher: “Ignatius was not a monk in a monastery but a man deeply immersed both in God and in the world of his day. He shaped a spirituality that assists persons, as his classic phrase says, to ‘find God in all things’: in the midst of intense activity, in the thousand occupations of daily living, or in the quiet of prayer. He was, in words used by a contemporary, “a contemplative in action,” as every disciple of Jesus in every walk of life can be and is called to be. His teaching is timeless since it rests upon a profound understanding of the human person, both spiritually and psychologically, and describes the spiritual experience common to all who love the Lord. Ignatius’s teaching is eminently suited to all who live in the world and serve the Lord they love in its manifold activity.”
