1. Begin with your relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Let God guide you.
God has promised to instruct us and guide us in God’s way (Psalm 32:8). When Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, He said “I will make you” (Mark 1:17) meaning “I will shape you.” A life shaped by God is a life of purpose. 3. Live joyfully.
Jesus said, “I have come that my joy may be in you and that your joy might be full” (John 15:11). Although He was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3), Jesus was the most joy-filled person who ever lived. A Boston newspaper once printed the following words about a stand-out New England preacher named Phillips Brooks (1835-1893): “The day was dark and gloomy, but Phillips Brooks walked down Newspaper Row and all was bright.” Do people see the joy of Christ in our lives? 4. Be a friend.
Everyone needs a friend. Even Jesus needed friendship. Near the end of His earthly life, Jesus made an incredible statement to His disciples, “From now on I do not call you servants but friends” (John 15:15). To be called a friend of God is the ultimate friendship and the supreme compliment. The ability to share that friendship with others is life’s most rewarding experiences. 5. Show genuine compassion.
I like the way a little girl said it. “Compassion is love with skin on it.” In other words, compassion is love lived out. There is a difference between sympathy and empathy. To feel sympathy is to feel for someone. To feel empathy is to feel with someone. Touching lives can be our greatest legacy. 6. Spend time with those you love.
Over the years I have conducted hundreds of funerals. When we lose a loved one, the thing we remember most about that person is time spent with them. At the end of the day, no one says, “I wish I had spent more time at the office, or closed more deals, or made more money.” Quality time makes a difference. 7. Do everything for the glory of God.
In I Corinthians 10:31 we read, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I think the words of the poet C.T. Studd say it best: “Only one life soon will be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.”

Carol J. FORCIER AGE 85 - OTSEGO
Carol passed away Sunday, October 6, 2019 at Bronson Hospital. She was born December 9, 1933 in Mankato, Minnesota, the daughter of Rolf and Ruth (Peterson) Sorlie. Carol loved shopping and enjoyed trips to the casino, playing keno, golfing and playing cards at church on Tuesdays and with the ladies on Fridays. She was a member of the Otsego Elks. On May 24, 1952 she married James Forcier who passed away in 2013. Surviving are her children, James Forcier Jr. of Kalamazoo, Kathy (Kurt) Hatfield of Allegan, Tom (Jackie) Forcier of Plainwell, Jeff Forcier of Otsego and Mike Forcier of Martin; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Gene Forcier and her dog, Mitzi. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, William Sorlie. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego with Pastor Darin Youngs officiating. Annette Louise Ward of Allegan passed away on Sunday, October 6th, 2019 as a result of complications from a heart transplant. Annie was a member of the Allegan United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling, crafting, woodworking, bird watching, crocheting and photography. Annie was born in Plainwell, MI and graduated from Plainwell High School. She is survived by her father, Berwin Henson, brother, Gordy Henson, son, Christoper Ward and daughter, Hannah Ward. There will be a memorial service for Annie at 1:00pm on Sunday, October 13th, 2019 at the Allegan United Methodist Church located at 409 Trowbridge Street in Allegan, MI

Zigfrids JIRGENS, Sr. AGE 89 - KALAMAZOO
Zigfrids Sr, "Zig", of Kalamazoo, MI passed away peacefully October 5, 2019 at Rose Arbor Hospice. Zig was born in Latvia on January 22, 1930 to the parents of Eduards and Lida Jirgens. Zigfrids immigrated from Latvia in 1950 to Ellis Island with his parents and siblings. From there, the family settled in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Through his apprenticeship in machinery, in Germany, Zig was able to begin the groundwork of his successful career, which led him to be the owner of his own machine shop. While Zig was in Phoenixville, he met Elaine Kovatch, whom later became his wife of 60 years. In 1955, Zig and Elaine moved to Kalamazoo to help support the family farm, and continue his desire to live the American dream. In addition, Zig started his own business in his back garage, which was the building blocks to his successful business of Jirgens Modern Tool, which still continues to operate today. Another accomplishment of Zig's includes being a part of the National Tooling and Machining Association. Zig had a passion to carry on his heritage and culture by being actively involved in the Latvian community. Some of the important work that he accomplished was being associated with the Latvian Church, Latvian Men's Choir, Garezers, Scout Master, Daugavas Vanagi, and the building of the Kalamazoo Latvian Heritage Center. Zig and Elaine put their heart and soul into seeing the Latvian Heritage Center be built which, fulfilled their love of the Latvian Community. Some of the enjoyments they had was traveling around the world. Zig's role as President of the Daugavas Vanagi, gave them the opportunity to travel to places such as, Latvia Australia, Canada, England, and Germany. Outside of the Daugavas Vanagi, Zig and Elaine enjoyed traveling across the country and internationally with the family to seek out new adventures. Zig was an avid reader, a Fox News fan, loved to be outside especially mowing his lawn, and spending time with his family. Zigfrids was preceeded in death by his parents Eduards and Lida Jirgens (Senbergs); his beloved wife Eliane E. Jirgens; and his siblings: Velta Lyons, Arija Smith, Rita Paeglis, Imants Jirgens. He is survived by his children: William (Robin) Jirgens, Maija Jirgens, Ziggy Jirgens, Peter (Chris) Jirgens and Rita Jirgens. He is survived by grandchildren: Dana (Brian) Henige, Jennifer (Tim) Rayman, Ryan Blankenship, Chad Jirgens, Zoe Jirgens-Smalla; great-grandchildren: Morgan and Gavin Rayman and Mason Blankenship. Zigfrids is also survived by his brother Peter (Barb) Jirgens; sister Maija (Corky) Miller; brother-in-law Johnny Kovatch and several nieces and nephews. The visitation for Zigfrids will take place on Thursday, October 10, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. located at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S 9th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Latvian Heritage Center located at 100 Cherryhill St, Kalamazoo, MI 49006. Friends and family are also welcome an hour prior to the funeral service. Zigfrids Jirgens and the cremains of his beloved wife Elaine E. Jirgens, who passed away in 2011, will be buried together at Riverside Cemetery during a Graveside service at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2019 following the funeral service. Zig with his wisdom was admired and had a heart of gold, kind soul and to everyone that he knew or met was a memory of his generosity and kindness that will continue. Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Zigfrids to The Latvian Heritage Center, the Daugavas Vanagi through the Latvian Hertiage Center, or to Rose Arbor Hospice.
