The Public Works Department will be picking up leaves between October 23, 2017, and November 10, 2017. Please do not place any leaves in the streets, before October 21, 2017. Leaves will be picked up twice during the three week period. Please plan accordingly. Allegan Street residents only- Continue to place leaves in the curb lawn. Please do not place leaves near trees or poles, for easier access. Collection dates will be Thursday, October 26, 2017, and November 9, 2017 for Allegan Street only. Farmer Street residents only - Collection dates will be Friday, October 27, 2017, and November 10, 2017. Please rake leaves into the street, no earlier than the Sunday before pick-up.

U.S. Air Force Airman Skylar J. Harrington graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Harrington is the son of Jason and Elisha Harrington of Kalamazoo, Mich. He is a 2015 graduate of Otsego High School, Otsego, Mich. He earned an associate degree in 2017 from Kalamazoo Community College, Kalamazoo, Mich.

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Viet Nam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved for his only son. About a month later … there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, “Sir, you don’t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life.” The young man held out his package. “I know this isn’t much. I’m really not a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.” The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. “Oh, no sir. I could never repay what your son did for me. It’s a gift.” The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected. The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection. On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. “We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?” There was silence. Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, “We want to see the famous paintings! Skip this one!” But the auctioneer persisted. “Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?” Another voice shouted angrily, “We didn’t come to see the painting!” But still the auctioneer continued. “The son! The son! Who’ll take the son?” Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and the son. “I’ll give $10 for the painting.” Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. $l0 is the bid, won’t someone bid $20?” The crowd was becoming angry. They did not want the picture of the son. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. “Going once, twice, SOLD FOR $10!” A man sitting in the second row shouted, “Now, let’s get on with the collection!” The auctioneer laid down his gavel. “I’m sorry, the auction is over.” “What about the paintings?” “I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!” “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” - I John 5:11, 12 (There are several versions of this story from an unknown source which predates the Internet)

Kathleen A. STRATTON AGE 71 – OTSEGO, MI

Kathy passed away Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She was born March 30, 1946 in Plainwell the daughter of Robert and Lois (Stevens) Story. Kathy was a Registered Nurse and had worked at Bronson Hospital and at the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital for 25 years until her retirement in 2008. She enjoyed reading, bowling on area leagues with her mother and other family members and going to the casino. Most of all Kathy adored her grandchildren and loved going to all of their events and volunteering whenever she was asked. Kathy was a cancer survivor and a supporter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. She was a member of the Otsego United Methodist Church. On August 19, 1967 at the Otsego United Methodist Church she married David Stratton who survives. Also surviving are her children, Todd (Carla) Stratton of Kalamazoo, Chad Stratton of Kendall and Rebecca Stratton of Otsego; grandchildren, Brandon, Joshua, Marshall, Brenna and Benjamin; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Linda (Dene) Hadden, Richard (Terri) Story; Aunt, Margaret Weipert and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church. Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Contributions in memory of Kathy may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Obituaries Robert L. “Bob” KENNICOTT AGE 96 – ORANGEVILLE TWP., MI

Bob passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego. He was born June 22, 1921 in Orangeville Township to Guy and Margaret (Shook) Kennicott. He proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII under General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge and had been wounded twice. Bob had worked at Mac Sim Bar, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department as a Lieutenant and later at Graff Trucking until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Small Pilots Association and had been a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030 since the 1940’s. On June 17, 1991 he married Frances Fenner who survives. Also surviving are his children, Michelle Haight, Scott (Cathy) Kennicott and Patricia Fagan; grandson, Robert (Leslie) Kennicott of Oregon along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Grace in 1977; son, Robert; daughter-in-law, Linda; son-in-law, Edward; sister, Betty Grinsol and brother, Lester. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Stan will never be forgotten, with many stories, songs and jokes to remember him by. Stan was born on July 20, 1953 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Walter and Armajean Uminn. Stan had many adventures in life and loved living it. He worked as a Union Bricklayer, out of Kalamazoo, most of his life. He also was a great son, brother, husband, dad, friend and Bumpa. In his free time he loved hunting, fishing, gambling, playing guitar, reading Stephen King books and spending time with friends and family. He also enjoyed listening to music, watching movies, TV and Nascar races. These are just a few of many hobbies and interests he enjoyed. In December 1974, Stan married his Sweetheart, Terry Maturen, and she blessed him with three children. Ben (Nikki) Uminn, Amanda (Jeremy) Haaksma and Rocky (Casey) Uminn. Eight grandkids, Anisley, Mallorie, Tucker, Layla, Jennie, Danny, James and Olivia. Siblings, Linda (Mike) Hughes, Dave (Lesa) Uminn, Rose Randall and Tony (Lisa) Uminn. Step-father, Warren Wakeland and many Nieces and Nephews. Stan is preceded in death by his Wife and Parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held on October 21, 2017 at 3-6pm at the Alamo Township Hall in Kalamazoo, to celebrate Stan's life. A private burial of ashes will take place at a later time at the Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego.

AGE 65 – ALLEGAN, MI Garry passed away Thursday, October 5, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 9, 1952 in Jackson to Nolan and Lois (Hughes) Davisson. Garry was a retired project manager. He liked riding his motorcycle and was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and listening to Rock and Roll music. On October 19, 1974 in Jackson, he married Patricia Stump who survives. Also surviving are his children, Bree (Kevin) Travis of Hopkins and Christopher (Roberta) Davisson of Detroit; grandchildren, Jarrod, Trenton, Hannaa, Chloe, Rhiannon, Nolan, Abby and Tomos; great-granddaughter, Rose; his mother; sister, Sharon (Brian) Bates; brothers, Phillip, Paul and Greg (Val). He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held Monday, October 9, 2017. Chaplin, Greg Carlson officiated. Cremation took place. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Garry may be made to the Susan Mast ALS Foundation or to the ALS Association Michigan Chapter. AGE 93 – ALLEGAN, MI Moira passed away Friday, October 6, 2017 surrounded by her family at Allegan County Medical Care Community. She was born April 17, 1924 in London, England the daughter of Stanley and Nellie (Mullens) Harvey. Moira had been in the British Military during WWII and met her husband, William Clark who was part of the US Army Military Police. They were married August 6, 1945 in London. They returned to the US in September of 1946. Moira had worked for 10 years at KalQuip until her retirement. In her spare time she loved playing Bingo. Moira had been a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Allegan since 1946 and was active in many church groups. Surviving are her children, Elaine (Olin) Eggleston of Marcellus, John (Lylah) Clark of Allegan, Patricia “Trish” (Bruce) Adams of Allegan and Katherine Guerrant of Allegan; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Kath Ficken and Stan Harvey along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, John, Pat, Eileen and Margaret. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Allegan. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.
