“CONNECTING WITH GOD” Matthew 5:1-12 We live in a world where people have the need to feel connected. Examples: • Family connections • Facebook friends • Marriage • Faith The Christian faith is all about connecting with God. When one is in a right relationship with God, one has the ability to love others (John l3:34). The reverse is also true. Our love for God and others begins with a healthy dose of self-respect (Luke l0:27). Jesus was sent into the world to help us make that vital connection with God. This is clearly seen in what is known as “The Beatitudes.” The Beatitudes (Matthew 5) have been called keys to the kingdom. This section of the Bible naturally leads into The Sermon on the Mount. It may be said the Beatitudes teach us how to connect with God and the Sermon on the Mount teaches us how to live out our faith in daily living. Here is how we connect with God: ADMIT OUR NEED. “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” (Matthew 5:3). CONFESS OUR SINS. “Blessed are those who mourn…” (Matthew 5:4) PLACE OURSELVES UNDER THE CONTROL OF GOD. “Blessed are the meek …” (Matthew 5:5) DESIRE FOR GOD. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness…” (Matthew 5:6) BECOME LIKE HIM. “Blessed are the merciful …” (Matthew 5:7) PURIFY OUR MOTIVES. “Blessed are the pure in heart …” (Matthew 5:8) LOVING OTHERS. “Blessed are the peacemakers …” (Matthew 5:9) ENDURE SUFFERING. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake …” (Matthew 5:l0)

AGE 84 – PLAINWELL, MI

Alice passed away on Oct. 12, 2015 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. Alice was born on July 6, 1931 to C. Allen & Julia (Brown) Tandy. Her family includes her friend and companion of 8 years, Jack Weingartz; her children: Don Ploof, Bill Ploof, Robert Ploof and Matthew (Pamela) Ploof; her sister Georgia Mae (Leroy “Babe”) Young; two step-children: Carol and Buck Washtoak; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband Don Ploof and her second husband John Washtoak; her parents; children: Kathryn Clark and Thomas Ploof; two siblings: Charles Tandy and Gail Tandy and one grandchild: Tony Ploof. Alice enjoyed knitting and reading romance novels. She also enjoyed watching the Tigers, the Spartans (Go Green) and playing video games especially Zelda. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Life Story Funeral Home - Plainwell. Eddy Jack PHIPPS AGE 86 – OTSEGO, MI

Eddy passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at his home in Otsego. He was born August 20, 1929 in Taos, New Mexico to Lee and Jewell (Bonner) Phipps. For many years Eddy worked in the logging industry in the northwest states. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading western novels, gem faceting, silversmithing and was a member of the Quartzsite Roadrunners Rock Club. On February 15, 1997 in Quartzsite, AZ he married Elizabeth Lorenz who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Sheila Livingston, April Janosky and Tammy Inman all of WA; brother, Tom Phipps of CA, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are a step-daughter and her husband, Linda (Roger) McPherson and their children and grandchildren all of Otsego. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Donald, Ronald and Ted Phipps. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 11am at the Merson Church with Pastor Alan Carson officiating. AGE 66 – OTSEGO, MI Ronald passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Wings Home in Allegan. He was born September 4, 1949 in Benton Harbor the son of Edward and Caroline (Howard) Baes. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Ron had worked for Atlas Press/ Clausing Industrial for 17 years until his retirement in 1987. After his retirement he had worked for Pfizer until 2004. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and collecting traps of many kinds, he was a member of the North American Trap Collectors Association. On November 21, 1970 in Benton Harbor he married Jeanne Bauske who survives. Also surviving are their children, Ken Baes of Otsego and Heather (Carl) Klotz of Allegan; grandchildren, Kierstin Baes, Carl Klotz II, LaVon Klotz and Vinny Klotz; his parents Edward and Caroline of Coloma, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends may visit with Ron’s family Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, starting at 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M. with Hospice Chaplain, Greg Carlson officiating. Burial of ashes and military honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Contributions in memory of Ron may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America or to the Wings Home of Allegan. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com
